Baker out to pocket more Millions after Paradoxium’s Wyong win

Bjorn Baker has another strong Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1100m) contender on his hands in the shape of Paradoxium (Extreme Choice) after the colt produced a dominant performance in Wednesday’s Wyong Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1100m).

Waterhouse calls for unity ahead of crucial Asian Pattern Committee meeting

Racing legend Gai Waterhouse has made an impassioned call for Australia’s black type crisis to be resolved in what looms as a seminal week for the issue, as Asian racing officials prepare to discuss it at a critical meeting.

With industry participants warning that Australia could be demoted from Part I of the international thoroughbred “Blue Book”, or that the Asian Racing Federation (ARF) could, at least temporarily, oversee the country’s black type pattern, Waterhouse said national officials should “put their differences aside” and reinstitute a black type committee.

What's On

It comes as the ARF’s Asian Pattern Committee (APC) prepares to meet in Hong Kong on Friday, when the Australian situation will be discussed – with the potential for serious ramifications for the country if it does not satisfy the ARF’s requirements.

The ARF wrote to Racing Australia (RA) in October asking it to put its house in order in regard to black type.

In a letter which ANZ News has seen, the federation reported its executive council, at its meeting in Paris on October 3, discussed its “long-standing concerns” about “quality control for black-type races in Australia”.

Noting Australia had not had a functioning black type committee “possibly since as far back as 2017/18”, the letter said Australia’s last race downgrade had occurred in 2012, since which time it had had 79 races upgraded, including seven to Group 1.

The letter said the APC “recommended that it not consider applications from Australia, nor recognise changes in race status of which Racing Australia gives notice” until RA adopted two measures.

It said the first was to institute new black type guidelines “in a form compliant with the APC Ground Rules”. The second was that a “national pattern committee, or equivalent body overseeing black type quality control, is operational”.

The ARF set a deadline of November 24 for RA to send it a written response. ANZ News understands RA gained an extension on that deadline, to last Friday, December 5. It remains unclear whether RA met that extended deadline. Racing Australia did not respond to ANZ News’ requests for comment before publication.

Calls on Monday by ANZ to RA chief executive Paul Eriksson and chairman Rob Rorrison seeking clarity on that question were not returned.

Matt Orr, a member of the ARF’s secretariat, did return ANZ’s call on Monday. When asked if the ARF had received a written response from RA by Friday’s deadline, he said: “No comment.”

Last Friday’s deadline coincided with an RA board meeting. It also remains unclear whether the RA board could reach any consensus regarding a reply to the ARF.

As Friday’s Hong Kong meeting looms, Hall of Fame trainer Waterhouse said she was “deeply worried” by the possibility Australia could be demoted to Part II of the Blue Book if it did not satisfy the ARF’s concerns.

She said the interstate rivalries which she believed had contributed to the devolution of Australia’s pattern committee should “be put aside for the good of the country”.

“State politics, personal politics – whatever you want to call it, they have to move on,” Waterhouse told ANZ News.

“What we’ve got is such a major problem. They’ve got to put their differences aside and move on.

“They’re being like little boys in the schoolhouse, and it’s no good. It’s such a worry.

“Personal politics will bring down Australian racing. It’ll bring down the system, the system on which we base everything – our breeding industry and much more.”

She added: “How the devil can they make any decision if they haven’t got a black type committee? That in itself shows how ludicrous the whole situation is.

“They have to get a committee that can work like it used to work and go back to doing that.

“How can you make these decisions without having a committee that’s guiding things for the best interest of the whole of Australia?”

What we’ve got is such a major problem. They’ve got to put their differences aside and move on

Gai Waterhouse

The idea of the ARF demoting a jurisdiction such as Australia to Part II of the Blue Book is considered fanciful by some. Waterhouse does not agree.

“Of course they’ll demote us. And why wouldn’t they?” she said. “We can’t even manage our own backyard at present.

“It’s so sad for our industry. Who’s steering the ship for God’s sake?

“They [the ARF] must think of us as the most parochial country in the world. And that’s exactly how we’re showing ourselves to be – totally parochial.”

Waterhouse stressed that these were her views as an industry participant observing the current dispute, rather than any prediction about what the ARF will ultimately do.

Asked about the prospect of the ARF stepping in to govern Australia’s black type pattern, Waterhouse said: “That’d be a very good idea. Someone from outside looking in. They would be objective.

“That’s what we lack – we cannot be objective at present. We can only be parochial. And while we’re parochial, with each state looking after its own interests, then we’ll never go forward.

“So if we’re not capable of doing that, which obviously they’re not, they should have the ARF come in and take over, because they would be totally objective, and they’ll probably do a much better job.”

Among developments at RA’s board meeting last Friday, the fate of a proposal put to RA by Thoroughbred Breeders Australia (TBA) and AusHorse to let them form and run a pattern committee remains unknown.

“We put a proposal in for RA to agree for us to form a committee to update the pattern,” said a representative from one of the bodies, who spoke on condition of anonymity. “This is so important to us breeders.”

Officials from TBA and AusHorse met on Monday to plan further steps and responses.

The current impasse continues the lengthy saga regarding governance of the black type pattern in Australia in recent years.

While the ARF's formal letter was directed at RA as the national governing body for black type, a suite of race upgrades in NSW has become the most visible flashpoint in the wider governance dispute.

It comes after an initial batch of 17 NSW races – which later grew to 18 – were listed as upgraded to as high as Group 2 by RA and RNSW, despite the fact there has not been a "properly functioning black-type quality control system in Australia for many years", according to the ARF letter.

Most of those races have now been run twice while advertised under their NSW upgrades, despite the APC not recognising the status changes of at least the first 17 under its ground rules. This non-recognition is due to the absence of an Australian black type committee which complies with the APC’s ground rules.

In October last year, RA announced it had implemented a new system, saying “the Australian Pattern has been reviewed to form the new ‘Australian Black Type Guidelines’”.

Based mainly on race ratings, it would replace the black type pattern committee system which had been in place since the late 1970s, taking “a modern approach” to Australia’s unique racing environment, whilst also recognising, under the country’s federated system of states, any “potential implications from an Australian competition law perspective”.

Opponents said the new system lacked the discretionary powers fundamental to black type committees around the world.

Some also said if the old black type committee had contravened competition laws, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) would have taken action against it previously.

“Separately, there’s also a public benefit exemption the ACCC can give,” one senior breeder, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told ANZ News. “They can give you a waiver for public benefit, and I believe this particular issue would qualify.”

In any event, the “Black Type Guidelines” have not met the approval of the ARF’s executive council.

In its letter to RA, it said its executive council felt “there has not been a properly functioning black type quality control system in Australia for many years, possibly since as far back as 2017/18”.

Listing seven races it believed were eligible for downgrades – including the Sydney Cup (Gr 1, 3200m), The Metropolitan (Gr 1, 2400m) and the WATC Railway Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) – the ARF warned of possible ramifications failing a satisfactory response from RA.

The APC may move to “restore effective black type quality control for Australian races” by not considering any of RA’s applications on gradings and may begin making decisions on Australian Group status itself, the letter stated, adding those decisions would “require the approval of the majority of the APC, with RA not being permitted to vote”.

The letter also said Australia could be demoted to Part II of the Blue Book, if RA did not satisfactorily address the ARF’s concerns and requests.

Demotion to Part II of the International Cataloguing Standards Blue Book – run by the International Grading and Race Planning Advisory Committee (IRPAC) – would have significant consequences for the Australian racing and breeding industry.

The letter added: “RA may be required to show cause as to why the APC should not recommend to the IRPAC, that it endorse, and the Society of International Thoroughbred Auctioneers, that it ratify, that Australia be demoted from Part I of the Blue Book until such time as it has in place a black type system which addresses the concerns set out above.”

Such a scenario would put Australia on a par with jurisdictions such as Malaysia, India, Panama and Puerto Rico in that all its black type races would be recognised globally as merely “Listed”.

Mr Hazzard has met with at least 20 groups of industry participants, including our group, so I think he is certainly doing his homework

Brian Nutt

Among many ramifications, industry stakeholders fear this would weaken the value of Australian stock as foreign investors lose confidence in Australian racing, while also dissuading northern hemisphere stud farms from shuttling stallions to the country. Its ramifications would also be felt in Europe, where Australian buyers purchase vast amounts of breeding and racing stock.

Meanwhile, a new organisation calling for reform of the NSW thoroughbred industry is “hopeful” change will arise from the state government’s review of the NSW Thoroughbred Racing Act.

Monday (December 8) marked the closing date for submissions to the review, which is being conducted by former health minister Brad Hazzard, and which was one of five recommendations stemming from the parliamentary inquiry into the proposed sale of Rosehill.

The Racing Reform Group NSW (RRG), launched last month, lodged a submission before Monday’s 5pm deadline which its secretary Brian Nutt described as “quite lengthy and very detailed”.

Among its contents is a call for the Hazzard review’s terms of reference to be broadened. Under the current terms, two critical areas have been excluded: the funding model of racing in the state and the relationship between Racing NSW and the state government.

Nutt told ANZ the RRG’s submission discusses those two areas and asks the Hazzard inquiry to recommend the review’s terms of reference be expanded to cover both.

“We, the members of the [RRG] steering group, all had quite a bit of input into the submission,” Nutt told ANZ. “It’s a very good submission, I believe. It covers most of the issues, such as governance, funding, et cetera.”

Nutt said he was “hopeful” both that the review’s terms of reference would be duly expanded, and that the review may lead to meaningful change in the way racing is run in NSW.

“Mr Hazzard has met with at least 20 groups of industry participants, including our group, so I think he is certainly doing his homework,” Nutt said. “We commend him, and we think he’s doing a very good job, from what we’ve seen.”

Others on the RRG’s steering group include prominent owner Jason Abrahams, lawyer and owner David Walter, Helen Sinclair, who has decades of experience in race club management across the state, Yarraman Park’s Arthur Mitchell, former Australian Turf Club and Australian Jockey Club director Julia Ritchie and bloodstock agent Will Johnson.

This article is based on correspondence and information available to ANZ News at the time of publication and is intended to report on the current debate about black type governance rather than to reach any concluded view about the conduct of any individual or organisation.

Shares in Group winners popular on Magic Millions Digital

Overpass (Credit: Supplied)

Shares in Group 1 performers Overpass (Vancouver) and Within The Law (Lucky Vega) were among the most sought after lots at the latest Magic Millions Digital Sale which concluded on Wednesday.

The chance to join in the ownership of the top liners from the Bjorn Baker stable under the Darby Racing banner proved to be irresistible for a number of interested parties.

Highway Farm followed up their recent share purchase in the Group 2-winning filly Within The Law by securing another five per cent on Wednesday for $70,000.

Her gun sprinting stablemate Overpass is heading to Saturday's $1.5 million The Gold Rush (Gr 3, 1400m) at Ascot and a five per cent share was traded to Blue Arrow Equine for $40,000.

"Our owners who were selling these shares are ecstatic with the results," Darby Racing's Scott Darby said.

"Both were happy to trade out but only if the price was right and Magic Millions delivered on that," he added.

Meanwhile, Ghobella, a Listed-placed winner by Blackfriars (Danehill), who was sold carrying to prominent Western Australian sire Maschino (Encosta De Lago), was bought by Boomer Bloodstock for $70,000.

"I would like to thank Magic Millions for the great result they achieved with my mare Ghobella," said Livio Divitini, who raced the mare and set her for sale.

"The team were very easy to deal with and I'd highly recommend them to any future sellers.”

Having now completed three online auctions, Magic Millions Digital has quickly established itself as a popular marketplace for vendors and buyers alike. This looks set to continue to build over the coming months.

Magic Millions head of digital Bryce Bevan said: "This sale shows that when given the opportunity to offer the right product, we can deliver phenomenal results for our clients.

"The prices for the shares in Within The Law, Overpass, Decorum, Blitzburg as well as Ghobella reflect that.

"Our attention now turns to working on private deals for those lots that passed in, with the aim to bring together as many as possible in the coming days.”

Entries for the next Magic Millions Digital Sale (January 2-7) will open on Thursday. For more details, or to enter for that sale, click here.

17 for Extreme Choice

Newgate Farm’s elite sire Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt) notched up his 17th individual stakes winner when exciting colt Paradoxium (2 c ex Paredo by Better Than Ready) took out Wednesday’s Wyong Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1100m). Trained by Bjorn Baker and ridden by Jason Collett, the colt was a $400,000 buy for his trainer in conjunction with Jim Clarke of Clarke Bloodstock and Ridgmont Farm from Silverdale Farm’s 2025 Magic MIllions Gold Coast Yearling Sale draft. Bred by Grant Bloodstock, Ken and Maree Lowe and Brian McGrath, he is the first foal out of Listed-placegetter Paredo (Better Than Ready), who has subsequently produced two fillies, a yearling by Zoustar (Northern Meteor) and foal by I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit). Extreme Choice stood for a fee of $330,000 (inc GST) this season.

First for St Mark’s Basilica

Coolmore Stud shuttle stallion St Mark’s Basilica (Siyouni) sired his first southern hemisphere-bred winner when Aristopolos (2 c Flying Krupt by Krupt) won at Launceston on Wednesday. Trained by John Blacker, the colt defeated King Candy (Wild Ruler) by two lengths with another 0.2 lengths back to Momentslikethese (Tiger Of Malay) in third. Aristopolos was picked up by his trainer for $60,000 from the Armidale Stud draft at the Magic Millions Tasmanian Yearling Sale. Aristopolos is out of the Listed-placed winner Flying Krupt (Krupt) and hails from the same family of stakes winner The Big Goodbye (Host). St Mark’s Basilica commanded a fee of $38,500 (inc GST).

Third stakes win for Durazzo

The Barry Campbell-trained Durazzo (5 g Needs Further - Arenzano by Not A Single Doubt) added a third Listed win to his record when he landed Wednesday’s Conquering Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at Launceston. Raced by a partnership that includes Denise Martin, the gelding defeated Just Cruisin' (Street Boss) by 0.3 lengths with First Accused (Turffontein) a further 1.6 lengths away in third. Durazzo was bought by Star Thoroughbreds and the Randwick Bloodstock Agency for $97,500 at the Magic Millions Tasmanian Yearling Sale in 2022 and Armidale will offer the gelding’s Brutal (O’Reilly) half-sister at the corresponding sale next year. She is catalogued as Lot 70.

Gringotts faces wide draw in The Ingham

Gringotts’ (Per Incanto) bid to carry 61 kilograms to victory in Saturday’s $2 million The Ingham (Gr 2, 1600m) at Randwick has been complicated by the outside draw, with the Ciaron Maher-trained favourite coming up with gate 24 in the capacity field. The impost is eight kilos above the minimum, but Gringotts remains the favourite after his recent Big Dance (1600m) and The Gong (1600m) successes. His high rating proves advantageous for rival and defending champion Robusto (Churchill), who drops to 54 kilograms after carrying 59.5 kilograms when seventh in the Festival Stakes (Gr 3, 1500m). "The best part about him [Gringotts] being there is he's pushing the weights down a little bit," Baker's racing manager, Luke Hilton said. "I think weight pulled Robusto up a bit the other day. He was a little bit flat, but he was going from 1300 to 1500 and now he is going from 1500 to 1600, and he's third-up. He is ready to run a peak." Robusto, who won last year’s edition from barrier four, will jump from gate six, while stablemate Amor Victorious (Caravaggio) has drawn three. The latter’s chances could hinge on a drying track given his preference for Soft 5 or better, with rain forecast in Sydney. "He doesn't like a really heavy track. He gets through it softish, but it just got too heavy for him the other day," Hilton said. "He took good benefit out of it, he's had the two runs now and we are still really pleased with him. Back on a drier surface he could definitely measure up."

Zou Sensation chasing rich pay day

Leon and Troy Corstens and Will Larkin’s Zou Sensation (Zoustar) will bid to break through the $1 million prize-money barrier when he takes his place in Saturday’s The Supernova (1400m) at Pakenham. The six-year-old lifted over the $500,000 in prize-money for the campaign when a last-start third behind Jigsaw (Manhattan Rain) and Arkansaw Kid (Harry Angel) in The Meteorite (1200m) at Cranbourne on November 22, the first of the slot races run by Southside Racing. "He came out of that last run really well," Larkin told Racing.com. "The drop back to 1200 metres last start wasn't ideal and they just got away from him in the early stages, but stepping up to the 1400 metres is going to suit and I'm sure he'll be close to the speed and hopefully hard to run down. Going from the winter, straight into the spring, he has been very good. He's won well over $500,000 this preparation, which is not easy to do, but it shows the versatility that he has and whatever race you put him in, he always gives his best, whether it's winning or in the placings, he's never that far away."

Watchme Win ready for Supernova test

Andrew Gluyas believes Watchme Win (Harry Angel) is likely going to need a career best performance if he is to upstage his rivals in Saturday’s The Supernova. The five-year-old gelding enters this weekend’s hotly contested event off the back of a fifth-placed finish in The Meteorite at Cranbourne. "We were just interested to see him at 1400 metres, it's a curiosity for us probably from the start before The Meteorite," Gluyas told Racing.com. "The offer was there from the Lofty Group to retain the slot [for The Supernova] and we thought it was a good opportunity to give him a chance. It looks like a very tough race, in saying that, but it finishes off his prep quite nicely. I think we'd more than likely give him a break after this and perhaps just reset ourselves for the Adelaide Carnival." Gluyas believes the timing is right for Watchme Win to race beyond 1250 metres for the first time and he thinks the relatively lightly raced five-year-old will be able to handle that distance rise. "He's had a few starts this prep now, a couple down the straight at Flemington and they've all been fair runs," the trainer added.

Moody to keep eye on Lim's Kosciuszko

Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman are not represented in Saturday’s Supernova at Pakenham, but the training partnership will be keeping a close eye on the Dan Meagher-trained Lim's Kosciuszko (Kermadec), who will represent the stable’s slot in the race. The former Singapore star was elected to represent Moody and Coleman after his fourth-placed performance in the Doveton Stakes (Listed, 1100m) at Caulfield last month. "[Negotiations] was pretty plain and pretty simple - we were the few in the fire," Moody told Giddy Up With Gareth Hall on Wednesday. "Probably for the two years running in The Supernova and The Meteorite, the horses we've required to run well have been in the paddock and the same thing happened this year. So, we had to look outside our own, and Dan's old horse resumed well at Caulfield the other day and we'd spoken a bit about it, as we had with a few other local trainers. Dan was the one that came through and said he was keen to run. He thought his horse was good in his return the other day, so we're backing his judgement."

Smokin' Romans looking to turn back the clock

The Ciaron Maher stable are looking to turn back the clock with Smokin' Romans (Ghibellines) in Saturday’s Pakenham Cup (Listed, 2500m). The now nine-year-old is one of three runners the Maher stable will saddle in Saturday's 2500-metre feature. Smokin' Romans burst onto the scene winning the 2021 Pakenham Cup following three wins during that winter and two second placings in the lead-up, including a narrow defeat in the Bendigo Cup (Gr 3, 2400m). The following spring saw Smokin' Romans claim the Turnbull Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at Flemington and then start favourite in the Caulfield Cup before contesting the Melbourne Cup, both times finishing seventh. Smokin' Romans has been a constant in recent years and won the Warrnambool Cup (Listed, 2350m) in May. There have been glimpses of his best form, but Maher's assistant trainer Jack Turnbull said the gelding had not been able to get races run to suit. "Smokey has been pretty frustrating," Turnbull said. "His last couple of runs haven't worked out as to how we would have liked. He's a free rolling horse that you have to pinch breaks with when you can, and he hasn't quite had that, both with barrier and the horse himself. With haven't done much with him and the idea is to try and rejuvenate him, where he can step, free roll and hopefully the class of horse is less again. This was the race that set him up a while ago and this is a nice time of year for him and if he brings his best, he will be there for a long way."

Wet weather to drive O’Shea mares north

With wet weather forecast in Sydney, co-trainers John O’Shea and Tom Charlton will take Junqueira (Capitalist) and Countyourblessings (I Am Invincible) to Brisbane with the pair unlikely to take their places in Saturday’s Razor Sharp Handicap (Listed, 1200m) at Randwick. Both have also been paid up for the Just Now Quality (Listed, 1300m) at Eagle Farm and that is shaping as the preferred option. "Just as a result of the weather, I think they will go to Brisbane," O'Shea said shortly after acceptances were taken for both meetings on Wednesday. Junqueira has had a disjointed campaign with her trainers scratching her several times due to wide draws. After finishing just over three lengths first-up at Randwick in September, she didn't race again for seven weeks, striking trouble when unplaced in a race on The Hunter undercard. She has the inside gate at Eagle Farm and O'Shea has warned punters not to underestimate her. "The other day she was about to run well and got galloped on," he said. "We were optimistic about her at Newcastle, and it didn't go our way. She is one that can bounce back and it wouldn't surprise us." Countyourblessings has also drawn low in barrier three and tackles the fillies and mares' feature first-up. "She is in great form. She has trialled up really well," he said. "We're trying to jag some black type for her ownership group, and we'll see if we can do it on Saturday."

Lady Verity posts impressive Sandown win

The Matt Laurie-trained Lady Verity (I Am Invincible) added a second win to her record when she won a Benchmark 64 (1200m) at Sandown-Lakeside on Wednesday. The three-year-old filly defeated Tan Tat Delight (Russian Revolution) by 0.3 length with another 1.5 lengths back to Off Their Perch (Shamus Award) in third. A $450,000 Inglis Easter purchase for her trainer and Peter Morgan from the Longwood Thoroughbred Farm draft, Lady Verity runs for Michael Drapac’s Sustainable Thoroughbred Breeding. She is the second foal and winner from Group 1-winning Foxwedge (Fastnet Rock) mare Volpe Veloce, who won 12 races in a glittering career in New Zealand.

Michelangelo hands sale-bound sister timely update

The Chris Waller-trained Michelangelo (Trapeze Artist) got off the mark at sixth time of asking when he broke his maiden in a 1350-metre at Wyong on Wednesday, handing his sale-bound sister a timely update in the process. The three-year-old gelding stayed on strongly to beat Daphnes (Street Boss) by 0.1 lengths with another 0.5 lengths back to Lapis Lazuli (Microphone) in third. A $160,000 buy for Tim Roberts Bloodstock from the Widden Stud draft at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, Michelangelo is out of Waltzing Wodka (Sebring), a dual-winning sister to Group 2 winner and Group 1-placed mare Seaburge as well as Group 2 scorer Catch A Fire, while she also counts Group 2 winner Zloties (Snitzel) among her half-siblings. Waltzing Wodka’s two other winners are headed by Listed scorer Pinito (Trapeze Artist), who also finished second in the Queensland Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m). Widden Stud will offer Michelangelo’s sister as Lot 433 at the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale next March.

VOBIS Platinum bonanza set to ring in the new year

Tagaloa (Credit: Yulong)

With the curtain set to be raised on the yearling sales season in a matter of weeks, owners and trainers will be given ample opportunity to line their pockets with two VOBIS Platinum bonanzas scheduled for the first two months of 2026.A total of ten VOBIS Platinum races will be held between the dates of January 1 and 7 providing connections with the perfect chance to accrue vouchers to spend at the Magic Millions Gold Coast National Yearling Sale later that month.

More than 120 eligible lots by VOBIS Sires stallions are set to go through the ring at the Bundall complex, and with over $2.5 million in vouchers yet to be redeemed, buyers looking to spend their VOBIS Platinum windfall will not be short of options at Magic Millions’ flagship auction.

The same can be said of buyers looking to invest at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale and Inglis Premier Yearling Sale, with 104 eligible lots by VOBIS Sires stallions heading to Riverside Stables in February and 230 lots nominated for both the VOBIS Sires and VOBIS Silver schemes at Melbourne’s leading yearling sale held at Oaklands in early March.

A second VOBIS Platinum bonanza will take place in February to bolster the coffers of buyers heading into those two auctions, with 29 VOBIS Platinum races scheduled across the 28 days of February.

Headline lots carrying that all-important VOBIS Sires eligibility at the upcoming Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale include a Tagaloa (Lord Kanaloa) filly out of eight-time Group 1 winner More Joyous (More Than Ready), a Diatonic (Lord Kanaloa) filly out of Memsie Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) heroine Snapdancer (Choisir) and a Pierata (Pierro) half-brother to champion sprinter Imperatriz (I Am Invincible).

All three will be offered by global powerhouse Yulong, who stand each of the aforementioned sires on their stallion roster in Nagambie.

Electron out to continue resurgence in Cal Isuzu Stakes

Electron (Turn Me Loose) will attempt to build on her last-start Otaki win when she lines up in Saturday’s Cal Isuzu Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) at Te Rapa, with owner-trainer Sam Mynott confident the mare is back on track after an interrupted spring. The five-year-old had struggled for form earlier in her preparation, but Mynott believes conditions played a key role. “We didn’t get the preparation we wanted with the weather over the spring, and she was probably running in races quite unsuitable for her,” Mynott said. “She finally got a suitable race, and she was fit from those other runs and it was great to see her get back on top.” A dual Group 3 placegetter earlier this year, Electron has continued to please since her Otaki victory. “She came through that run really well, she seems to love a trip away,” Mynott said. “She is a very good eater, so that is never an issue. She has just ticked over and she should improve off that run last time. She has got a beautiful draw [4], it is nice to get that for a change. It is quite a small field, so I would say she will probably land somewhere near the front and hopefully she is there in the finish.”

Sassy Lass bidding to go one better

Lance O’Sullivan and Andrew Scott will take a deep and varied team to Te Rapa on Saturday, headlined by Sassy Lass (Staphanos) who will bid to go one better in the Waikato Cup (Gr 3, 2400m). Sassy Lass was a luckless second in last year’s edition and, despite a modest-looking formline, Scott believes she is trending the right way. “Her Counties Cup run this year was actually better than last year, she only got going late and finished less than a length and a half from the winner,” he said. “We’re well pleased with her work since and she’s had a better build-up than last year, when she was coming out of a winter campaign. This time in we’ve been able to space her races as we’ve wanted to and she’s peaking at the right time, so we’ll be looking for a strong effort from her.”

Wexford Stables roll out strong Te Rapa team

Wexford stables will saddle two runners in the J Swap Sprint (Gr 3, 1400m) at Te Rapa on Saturday - Checkmate (Mongolian Khan), who resumes after a break and Smart Love (Savabeel), who brings a perfect four-from-four formline into the race but needs one scratching to gain a start. “After his run in the Proisir Plate we decided spring was coming a bit too soon for Checkmate, so we put him aside and he’s come back looking much better,”
co-trainer Andrew Scott said. “He had a lovely trial at Taupo last month, he’s been working well since and he’s there now with a good bit of condition hopefully ready for a big campaign.Smart Love has worked up to this level with some impressive form coming through the grades, so she deserves her chance at a good race. Her Tuesday work indicated she’s as well as she has been heading into her earlier races and we expect another good run from her.”

Places To Be out to bounce back

Kelly Van Dyk is hoping Places To Be (Hello Youmzain) can regain her momentum when the promising filly lines up in Saturday’s opening three-year-old handicap over 1200 metres at Te Rapa. The filly won by four lengths on debut at Taupo but has since struggled in two black type assignments, running out in the Soliloquy Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) and fading to fifth in the O’Leary’s Fillies Stakes (Listed, 1340m). Van Dyk, who trains and races the filly with Ben Kwok and Bevan Smith, was satisfied with her most recent run and expects improvement back at 1200 metres. “I am really happy with her. She came through her last run really well at Wanganui. I just think she peaked on her run there,” Van Dyk said. “It was a few weeks between runs since Ellerslie, where we had a bit of a mishap there where she ran off. I just wanted to get her confidence back, back left-handed, and we were happy with her performance. I think back to the 1200 metres will be ideal on Saturday.”

Hiroyuki Uemura is relishing the chance to pit Bellagio Opera (Lord Kanaloa) against the mighty Romantic Warrior (Acclamation) in the Hong Kong Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) at Sha Tin on Sunday. The back-to-back winner of the Osaka Hai (Gr 1, 2000m) is considered to be the most likely candidate to prevent Danny Shum’s champion from landing the race for an unprecedented fourth time in a row. Uemura is highly respectful of Romantic Warrior, but insists that he would not have brought Bellagio Opera to Sha Tin unless he thought he was capable of claiming first prize. “It’s a big challenge,” he said. “I understand Romantic Warrior is a very big rival but I think our horse has a lot of quality and has the level to compete against him. As a trainer, that’s why we have brought him – to beat him. We’ve got a very big opponent in Romantic Warrior, but if we beat him, it’s going to mean a lot.”

HK: Purton delighted to pick up Voyage Bubble ride

Zac Purton is looking forward to getting back on board Voyage Bubble (Deep Field) when the gelding attempts to defend his title in Sunday’s Hong Kong Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) at Sha Tin. James McDonald partnered the Ricky Yiu-trained seven-year-old to victory 12 months ago, but with McDonald sticking with last-start Jockey Club Mile (Gr 2, 1600m) winner Galaxy Patch (Wandjina) Purton will reunite with Voyage Bubble. “He’s a good ride to pick up,” Purton said. “I won his first race on him. I thought he was a progressive sprinter and he ended up going on to win a Classic Mile and the [Hong Kong] Derby. He’s obviously ended up a lot better horse than I initially thought he was going to be. He’s been a real star. If you go through his record, he’s a bloody good horse. He’s going from 2000 metres back to 1600 metres, and when he did that last year, he was a bit dour, so that’s a concern. But hopefully he can draw well and get a nice run.”

HK: Lemaire warns rivals not to overlook Embroidery in Mile

Do not underestimate the three-year-old filly Embroidery (Admire Mars) in the Hong Kong Mile was the message from Christophe Lemaire on Tuesday. Embroidery will be aiming to become the first of her age and sex to land the coveted prize, but is the standout of her generation, having landed the Oka Sho (Gr 1, 1600m) in April and Shuka Sho (Gr 1, 2000m) in October. Lemaire, who was aboard for the latter effort said: “She’s a very talented filly. She’s the winner of two of the three legs of the Triple Crown for fillies. She’s back to a mile and I don’t think that will be a problem for her because she’s got enough speed for that. She won very well last time and she’s got a little weight advantage. It’s a tough task against the best milers in Hong Kong, but she’s talented and a true Group 1 filly, so she’s got her chance.”

Baker out to pocket more Millions after Paradoxium’s Wyong win

Paradoxium (Credit: Magic Millions)

Bjorn Baker has another strong Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1100m) contender on his hands in the shape of Paradoxium (Extreme Choice) after the colt produced a dominant performance in Wednesday’s Wyong Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1100m).

Baker won last year’s edition with O’Ole (Ole Kirk), who later claimed the Gold Coast feature, and Paradoxium now appears poised to follow a similar path.

Jumping well from barrier four under Jason Collett, Paradoxium immediately took control. Peter Snowden’s Seeiaye (Russian Revolution) settled outside him and maintained pressure throughout, but the Ridgmont-owned colt produced a powerful burst of acceleration turning for home. He looked the winner at the top of the straight before extending away to score by 2.84 lengths.

An eyecatcher in the race was the Michael Freedman-trained Mystical (Exceed And Excel), who trailed the field by two lengths early but finished strongly for second. Fellow Ridgmont/Baker filly Masvingo (Zoustar) filled the minors, finishing 3.26 lengths behind the winner.

For him to finish off the way he did, having been eyeballed in running, I think is pretty special

Mitch Cunningham

Having made his debut with a fourth-placed finish in the Breeders’ Plate (Gr 3, 1000m) in October, connections were impressed by the improvement Paradoxium had made since his first racing preparation.

“It was extraordinary and he's improved a few lengths from his first prep,” Ridgmont director and owner Mitch Cunningham told ANZ News.

“For him to finish off the way he did, having been eyeballed in running, I think is pretty special. [Jason] Collett mentioned after the race that he felt that he had quite a bit up his sleeve with him, so to finish off so brilliantly is exciting and gives us confidence going into the big one in January.

Cunningham confirmed Paradoxium will now head to the BJ McLachlan Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Eagle Farm on December 20 as a lead up to the $1 million Gold Coast feature.

“I think we'll just let him come through this and make sure he pulls up well. Bjorn has plotted a path to Magic Millions victories last year with O’Ole, I think he would prefer to have him going in rock-hard fit,” he said.

Bred by Grant Bloodstock, Ken and Maree Lowe and Brian McGrath, the colt was a $400,000 buy for Baker, Clarke Bloodstock and Ridgmont from Silverdale at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

“We like to buy off good farms and Silverdale Farm is an exceptional nursery. Steve Grant and Rob Petith do a really good job, and we like to buy off them. Paradoxium and Masvingo were both bought off Silverdale funnily enough,” Cunningham said.

“This colt was just a strapping, close coupled, strong Extreme Choice who had, and still has, a really good brain for it. We pulled him out quite a few times and he just marched out of his box, did his job and he just clearly had a will to be there and a will to work, so that was a big one for us.

“He was a well muscled, attractive colt by probably one of our best stallions, if not the best in the world. So at $400,000, we jumped at the opportunity and we thought we probably would have to pay a hell of a lot more than that,” Cunningham said.

Paradoxium is the first foal out of the stakes-placed Paredo (Better Than Ready) and comes from a pedigree rich in black type. Paredo is a half-sister to stakes-placed Snipzu (Snippetson), the dam of Group 1-placed Don Corleone (Extreme Choice), and Happy Pilgrim (Congrats), the dam of Group 1 winner Private Harry (Private Harry).

Paredo was purchased by Silverdale Farm for $475,000 at the 2023 Inglis Chairman’s Sale and has since produced a yearling filly by Zoustar (Northern Meteor) and another by I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) this season.

Paradoxium became the 17th individual stakes winner for Newgate Farm’s Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt).

Ridgmont also owned the third placegetter Masvingo, who pleased connections with her run and is expected to follow a similar path to the winner.

Also bought out of the Silverdale draft, the Ridgmont Fillies Partnership and Clark Bloodstock went to $580,000 to secure the filly at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale earlier this year.

“It was just such a fast run race and she was at her top from the jump and you can see she was sort of under riding all the way through. So for her to finish off the way she did and still manage to gain some black type is huge for her moving forward,” Cunningham said.

“She could have hit the rail a few times, so it takes a lot of maturity as a two-year-old to finish off despite a bit of a torrid run, so at this stage we'll just take her home and see how she pulls through, but there's every opportunity for her to press on to the two-year-old race herself and my feel would be should take a hell of a lot of improvement from it.”

The Three Hundred gets the nod in tight finish

The Three Hundred (I Am Invincible) thrust himself firmly into the Magic Millions Gold Coast picture with a tough victory in Wednesday’s Magic Millions Wyong 3YO & 4YO Stakes (1200m).

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained gelding, given a determined ride by Tim Clark, edged out King Of Roseau (Capitalist) and Spywire (Trapeze Artist) in a tight finish, by margins of 0.19 and 0.23 lengths.

The trio came together late, prompting protests from the jockeys of both placegetters, but stewards dismissed the objections. Last year’s Magic Millions 2YO Classic runner-up O’Ole endured a luckless run and finished fourth, 3.58 lengths adrift.

Already a Group 3 winner of the Winx Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m), The Three Hundred was a $400,000 purchase for Waterhouse, Bott and Trilogy Racing from Yarraman Park, with his breeders, the Allam Racing Syndicate, retaining an ownership share. He is out of Listed winner Sassy ‘N’ Smart (Smart Missile), a half-sister to Group 3 winner Mallory (Not A Single Doubt).

Trilogy Racing doubled down on the family this year, joining Bjorn Baker and Suman Hedge to secure The Three Hundred’s Extreme Choice half-sister for $200,000 at January’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. Sassy ‘N’ Smart produced a colt last season by I Am Invincible’s Coolmore-based son Home Affairs.

What’s gone around has come around for Queensland’s Lucas Bloodstock as they celebrate their first stakes winner - and a duck-breaker for stallion Sun City (Zoustar) - in Itchintogo, winner of Saturday’s Phelan Ready Stakes (Listed, 1110m) at Doomben.

Ben Lucas not only bred the two-year-old gelding but his dam Itchintowin (Nothing To Lose), who was from a mare named Tichiba (Straussbrook) who was purchased by his father - Willowbend Stud’s David Lucas - to help Ben launch his business some 15 years ago.

Sold as a yearling, Itchintowin scratched that itch five times, including twice in Brisbane city class, before being moved on for $6,000 at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale of 2016 to Kingstar Farm.

After three foals there for little reward, she was put online and Lucas bought her back, for $1,600 in-foal to Lord Of The Sky (Danerich), a mating that produced Stylish Prince, who’s had two Victorian placings from four starts.

Lucas’s first move with Itchintowin was to send her to Sun City, then standing down the road at Telemon Thoroughbreds for $7,700. The following year, when his fee was $4,400, he sent Itchintowin back to him again. It was a fairly natural thing to do - since Lucas is a shareholder in the stallion - but he was pleased with the match-up on type in any case.

“I thought the two horses would benefit each other,” said Lucas. “Sun City is a lovely animal, and Itchintowin was a decent sized mare as well. You weren’t trying to fix shoulders or strengthen a hindquarter or anything like that. They were both pretty equal, conformation wise.”

The first foal of that mating is Switch The Stars, a now three-year-old who’s spelling after an unplaced debut for Tony and Maddysen Sears.

But the second - Itchintogo - has hit his straps from day one, leading on last month’s debut in 1200-metre Doomben two-year-old handicap before weakening into second, then sitting second in the run before taking the Phelan Ready by 0.4 lengths. In so doing he went one better than his sire, with Sun City having run second in the race in 2018, behind his current Telemon barnmate The Odyssey (Better Than Ready).

We blew a fortune in cancelling the accommodation for our team when the sale was postponed, but we might have made it back in the sales ring

Ben Lucas

The Tony McEvoy-trained Sun City then won the BJ McLachlan (Gr 3, 1200m) to put himself among the favourites for the rich Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m). However, Tony Gollan says Itchintogo will likely miss the McLachlan, and not start again before the Gold Coast feature.

Switch The Stars and Itchintogo are graduates of the Magic Millions Gold Coast March Yearling Sale. The former fetched $12,000, and Itchintogo sold for $60,000 to Glenhuntly Lodge, who sent him to Gollan.

Itchintogo would be missed at Lucas Thoroughbreds.

“He was the whole team’s favourite horse,” said Lucas, who now owns ten mares and houses another 15 for clients on his 250-acre farm near Boonah, south of Brisbane.

“He was a real cheeky character, was very smart, and had a real spirit about him too. We’d be standing there holding him and he’d put on a really exaggerated yawn, or stick his tongue out or something just to be a part of it all.”

Still, he had to go, and when he did, something disguised as bad luck kicked in.

He was prepped for that sale last March when south-east Queensland was forced to batten down the hatches as Cyclone Alfred hovered about the coast. The sale was delayed by two weeks.

“By the time he got to the sale, he looked perfect,” Lucas said. “Two weeks earlier, he wouldn’t have looked as good. The ideal thing is to have them peaking on sale day, and he did. And had the sale been two weeks later, he would have been a bit overdone.

“We blew a fortune in cancelling the accommodation for our team when the sale was postponed, but we might have made it back in the sales ring.”

Itchintogo hails from a moderately performed family. All the class lies in his Kiwi third dam Alberton Lass (Adios), who was placed, and who had seven winners from ten runners including three stakes victors. They were Sir Alberton (Red Tempo), who won a Group 2 and two Listeds in New Zealand and was twice Group 1 placed, Group 2 winner Alberton Star (Stylish Century) and Listed victor Straussbridge (Straussbrook).

It’s a vote of confidence in Sun City that Itchintogo - his only third crop runner so far - clearly has ability, reflected in his $15 quote for the Magic Millions 2YO Classic.

Bought by McEvoy Mitchell Racing and David Redvers for $520,000 at the Gold Coast, Sun City began by looking as promising as another offspring of Zoustar (Northern Meteor) who’d entered the McEvoy stable a year earlier in Sunlight, winner of the Magic Millions 2YO Classic and later three Group 1s.

With a similar ownership ticket, including Qatar Bloodstock, Sun City debuted with a second in Flemington’s Maribyrnong Trial Stakes (Listed, 1000m) before his Phelan Ready second and McLachlan success. He may have been around the top of the market for the Magic Millions 2YO Classic, but some bad luck of the completely undisguised kind took hold.

“He tried to jump the crossing when he won the McLachlan,” says Telemon owner Dan Fletcher. “He twisted a fetlock, the joint became infected and they had to flush it. So it went from something innocuous to major surgery. Any time you get an infection inside a joint it’s a big issue.

“It was terrible luck for the team. They were optimistic he’d go the same way as Sunlight. But after that joint infection, they never really got him back.”

After nine months off, Sun City raced three more times for a Benchmark third, and a second-last and last in Adelaide Listed class. An association between Fletcher and Qatar Bloodstock helped line his path to Telemon.

He’s a son of Zoustar, and Zoustar’s pretty expensive these days, so if people don’t have the money for that, here’s a next best thing

Dan Fletcher

From limited opportunities - he’s averaged 50 mares over his five seasons - the nine-year-old now has a stakes winner from 39 runners, and 18 winners. He has two more stakes placegetters in Brisbane Group 3 runner-up Sun Worshipper, and New Zealand’s Sierra Leone, who’s run a Listed second.

Enhancing Itchintogo’s stakes win on Saturday was the fact it was the second leg of a Doomben double for Sun City, with Sun Worshipper having taken the first event, over 2000 metres.

“I reckon he’s done a really good job,” Fletcher says of Sun City, whose results led to a doubling of his service fee last year, to $8,800.

“He’s never had the benefit of a syndicate of shareholders behind him so he’s never covered big books as such, but from the numbers he’s had he’s done an exceptional job.

“He’s a son of Zoustar, and Zoustar’s pretty expensive these days, so if people don’t have the money for that, here’s a next best thing.

“He’s good because it gives everyone a bit of hope when stallions at that level can take you to the carnivals, can get you a stakes-winning two-year-old, and take you where everybody wants to be, and you don’t have to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on service fees to do it. He’s great to give breed to race people or people on limited budgets hope that they can still be in the game.

“He was champion first season sire of Queensland, he’s thrown good, solid two-year-old winners, and a horse in New Zealand in Sierra Leone who’s a really nice individual who was in the mix for the Karaka Millions.

“If you pull his numbers apart, he’s running at in excess of 10 per cent stakes horses to runners. I know it’s a small sample size, but just the fact he’s put a marker down and shown he can do a good job is great. Where we’ve got him, he’s still really good value.”

Itchintogo’s pedigree is fairly short on nicks and tricks. It contains only one bit of inbreeding, with an Australian flavour. Bletchingly (Biscay) is repeated at 5m x 5m, via Sun City’s second damsire Canny Lad in the top half, and through second dam Tichiba’s grandsire Opera Prince.

While Sun City has double Danehill (Danzig), Itchintowin is Danehill-free. In any case, Fletcher believes the fact Danehill is back at 4m x 3m in Sun City’s pedigree reduces any worry of mating with mares also carrying Danehill.

Natalma (Native Dancer) is the most repeated mare with nine spots, only one of which is in the bottom half. Hyperion (Gainsborough) is the dominant stallion with 20 mentions, ahead of 17 for Nearco (Pharos).
