James Harron and the Waterhouse-Bott stable will aim to strengthen their Magic Millions hand on Saturday when exciting colt Knightsbridge (Farnan) steps out at Randwick with a coveted berth in the $3 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1100m) on the line.

The son of Kia Ora Stud’s promising young sire Farnan (Not A Single Doubt) showed ability at his only start to date when finishing an encouraging fifth in the Maribyrnong Trial Stakes (Listed, 1000m) at Flemington in October and returns this weekend with qualification firmly in mind.

What's On

“The stable have always had a good opinion of him,” Harron told ANZ News.

“He's a very well natured colt, he goes about his business very well. He has had two good trials leading in and hopefully he can have a good forward showing.

“He has really only got one opportunity to qualify for the Magic Millions, so, if he's able to win, then naturally we'll take that path, and if not we'll probably stick around Sydney.”

Knightsbridge was prominent throughout on debut, jumping cleanly to lead before being run down late by Lindsay Park’s Eurocanto (Per Incanto), beaten just 1.35 lengths.

“It was probably a bit of an ask going to Melbourne. I think nothing really on speed won that day and he was a little bit lost. It just didn't really work out for him,” Harron said.

“So I think being back in more familiar territory with that run under his belt last preparation, and being in his second racing prep it should start him in good stead.”

Bred to perform, Knightsbridge is out of the winning Nicconi (Bianconi) mare Festivity and is a half-brother to Group 1-placed and Group 3-winning Semana (Winning Rupert) as well as Listed winner Gala Queen (Deep Field).

The colt lines up as favourite in Saturday’s opening event at Randwick and will be ridden by Adam Hyeronimous from barrier four. The pair have already combined in two recent trials, finishing first and second at Randwick Kensington and Rosehill respectively.

He's a very relaxed horse, so, I think generally, it's the stable’s style to have their horses up on speed, but he's a horse that if there's a really hot tempo, he'll come back easily enough as well

JAMES HARRON

“It's always a bit of an advantage to have that race prep under your belt, that being said, it looks like there are some promising horses coming out of the trials, so you never really quite know what you're up against,” Harron said.

“He's a very relaxed horse, so, I think generally, it's the stable’s style to have their horses up on speed, but he's a horse that if there's a really hot tempo, he'll come back easily enough as well.

“I think we'll just leave it up to Adam to make the right call in terms of the tempo of the race, and make sure he gives him every opportunity.”

Knightsbridge was secured for $750,000 by James Harron Bloodstock Colt Partnership with Tony Fung Colts at last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale through the Lime Country Thoroughbreds draft, and Harron is already looking ahead to another busy week on the Gold Coast.

“Looking forward to it now. It's been a fantastic sale for us over the years, and we can't wait to get stuck into it,” he said.

“We head there on the 5th of January, and by all accounts, it looks like another great lineup of horses, so can’t wait to get stuck into it.”

Harron feels a Randwick victory would provide the perfect lead-in to Queensland.

“At this stage,
it looks like we're going to get a run with Mystical, who's in our fillies partnership, and if we can get Incognito in there for our colt partnership, it would be fantastic.”

Ninja to line up in Vo Rogue Plate

The Michael Freedman-trained Ninja (Farnan) will have a final outing before the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (RL, 1400m) when he contests the $300,000 Vo Rogue Plate (Gr 3, 1300m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday. Owned by MyRacehorse, the son of Farnan (Not A Single Doubt) has just four starts to his name and is favourite for the Magic Millions Guineas, with Freedman happy with the way the campaign is coming together. "He's great, he had a jumpout midweek last week at the Gold Coast just to keep his fitness up," Freedman said. "I'd always planned for him to go into Magic Millions Guineas third-up. Knowing that he was going to be four weeks between, that's why he had the 1000-metre jumpout last week, just to keep him up to the mark." Ninja's only start this campaign was a third placing in the Pierata Plate (1200m) won by Grafterburners (Graff) at Doomben on December 6 under Andrew Adkins, while Tommy Berry jumps aboard this weekend from barrier 12. "He's drawn a bit awkwardly out in gate 12, that's a little bit of a concern and something he's going to have to try and overcome, but the horse himself is in great form," Freedman said.

Bedggood’s St Lawrence on the back-up

St Lawrence (Credit:  Racing Photos)

Gavin Bedggood has heaped praise on Ciaron Maher for his advice on how to handle St Lawrence (Redwood) as the seven-year-old gelding gets set for Saturday's $200,000 Coastal Classic (1700m) at Geelong. The Cranbourne-based trainer said words of advice from St Lawrence's former trainer had helped him rejuvenate the son of Redwood (High Chaparral), who finished second in the Lord Stakes (Listed, 1600m) at Sandown on Boxing Day and is on the quick back-up this weekend. "He'd had a few runs for me and I was probably battling a bit and I bailed Ciaron up at Caulfield one day and I said, 'where am I going wrong with this horse? I can't get a yelp out of him'," Bedggood said. "He said he was probably a little bit similar and he was a horse who really thrived off his environment being changed. He went to Fingal, he went to Bong Bong, he went to Bob's Farm and he just tried to keep changing his environment and he seemed to enjoy that. So I just hit reset and put him out for three weeks and he did a couple of weeks at the beach. Normally between runs we send him down to Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm and he really enjoys that. He's obviously on a quick turnround [Saturday], so we haven't had to do anything with him, he's been down the beach for a few days, and I'd have to say talking to Ciaron has helped me.You would think fourth-up, up to 1700 metres from a better draw in a race that probably lacks a bit of speed he should get a nice run on the back of them. If he handles the back up well, he's going to be right among the thick of things you would imagine."

Arabella Star to head to Gawler

Despite having a few suitable options closer to home over the new year period, trainers Tony and Calvin McEvoy have chosen Saturday's $55,000 Kingsford Hotel Class 1 Handicap (1107m) at Gawler as the destination for Arabella Star (Star Turn). The three-year-old was an acceptor at Echuca on New Year's Eve and was also entered for Saturday night's Cranbourne program, but Calvin McEvoy is chasing a bigger pot this weekend. "We thought it was a similar strength of race as Echuca but worth three times the money and, also, we're trying to get her to become a metro winner," he said. "She's going well at home, she's still working it all out, but we were keen to take her over and have a go." Saturday's contest will be Arabella Star's fifth start and first since a fourth placing in a Benchmark 64 (1220m) at Sandown on December 10. "She does begin a little bit slower out of the machine, so hopefully if she begins nicely she's got the necessary speed," McEvoy added.

Persistence the key for McArdle

With yearling sale season on the doorstep, like many other trainers John Mcardle will soon embark on viewing thousands of young horses with an eye to trying to find a bargain. However, McArdle has a homebred that could deliver a nice return this weekend as debut winner Divine Dot (Overshare) takes to Geelong for Saturday's $150,000 Geelong Diamond (1100m). The daughter of Overshare (I Am Invincible) is out of Miracle To Me (Bel Esprit), who won two races in Melbourne, and scored by nearly three lengths in a 1200-metre maiden at Mornington last month. "She pulled up well," McArdle said of her debut. "They didn't run a huge time and, obviously, at this stage we don't know what the quality was like, but she did a lot wrong and still won very easily. She ate up that night and with a few days on the water walker she'll be there at Geelong after I confirm it with the owner – my wife. She's a homebred and the best type the mare has had so far. But she does a fair bit wrong and we've had a couple out of the mare who didn't run 1200 metres, which we were a bit concerned about, but she seemed strong enough the other day. She's still new but has very good tactical speed. They went slowly at Mornington and then she kicked. As Jett [Stanley, jockey] said, she put them to the sword and won by as far as she wanted. It will be interesting to see with a bit more pressure in the race what she does."

Gatsby’s and Candlewick to debut for Pride

Joe Pride will hand stable debuts to both Gatsby's (Snitzel) and Candlewick (Pierro) on Saturday as their pair tackle the $160,000 Schweppes BM78 Handicap (1100m) at Randwick. Candlewick, a half-sister to The Everest (1200m) winner Classique Legend (Not A Single Doubt), came to Pride after starting her career with John O'Shea and Tom Charlton, while Gatsby's was formerly trained by Chris Waller but was sent to Pride after a change in ownership. "I haven't put a lot of pressure on him, but what I've seen from him so far I've been happy with," Pride said of Gatsby's. "His head seems to be in the right place and that's often the key with these older horses. If you get them thinking the right way they'll race well, so I've been pleased. He's a pretty fast horse so the barrier [14] might not be too costly for him – I would have preferred him to draw well, obviously – but that'll do," Pride said. Candlewick fared better in the barrier draw, coming up with gate eight, and the four-year-old daughter of Pierro (Lonhro) heads into Saturday's race off two trials. "I've been really pleased with her, she's done particularly well at home and her trials have been very good," Pride said. "She's new to my place, so we're just taking her on face value, but on face value, the way she's trialled up and the way she's progressed I would have thought she's a good prospect. She's lightly raced enough that the best of her is hopefully ahead of her."

More expected of Big Swinger

Big Swinger (Credit: Racing Photos)

Pakenham-based trainer Charlotte Littlefield is expecting Big Swinger (Trapeze Artist) to land Saturday's Benchmark 84 (1100m) at Geelong after a run of consistent efforts. The four-year-old gelding has placed in the Fisher Stakes (Listed, 1200m), Testa Rossa Stakes (Listed, 1400m) and a Benchmark 84 (1200m) this campaign, and Littlefield feels a drop back to 1100 metres will be ideal. “This prep I thought he’d come back a 1400-metre horse,” Littlefield said on SENTrack's Giddy Up. “I even thought on some of his work that he’d be a miler, but his stats don’t show that. I don’t think we’ve got him out to 1400 [metres] at the right time, yet. I think there is still time to develop him into that horse. I think it’s a good race for him [on Saturday]. We just want to knock off that benchmark race with him. He has just been poorly rated because we’ve lined him up in Listed and stakes races. Every time he’s run a placing he has popped up a few points and that has just ruined it a little bit, for us."

Breeders’ Plate winner Incognito lands trial

October's Breeders' Plate (Gr 3, 1000m) winner Incognito (Stay Inside) displayed his wellbeing on Friday as he took out a 900-metre trial at Rosehill. The Michael Freedman trained son of Stay Inside (Extreme Choice) sat second throughout before then moving to the front under Tommy Berry and powering to the line to beat Miss Scandal (Home Affairs) by 0.2 lengths. Bought for $1 million at Magic Millions, Incognito was the highest-priced yearling from the first crop of Stay Inside and he has a yearling half-sister by Pinatubo (Shamardal) set to be offered at Magic Millions this year as Lot 111 by Bell River Thoroughbreds.

Cole navigating familiar path with Group 1 performer

Navigator (Credit:  Race Images)

Matamata trainer Cody Cole is following a similar blueprint to last year with his Group 1 performer Navigator (El Roca), who will head into the Telegraph (Gr 1, 1200m) at Trentham on Saturday fresh-up. The six-year-old son of El Roca (Fastnet Rock) was also in a fresh state when placing in the race last year, and Cole saw no reason not to follow that same path this year. “We did that last year with him and that’s the way to have him,” Cole said. “He performed well there last year and I feel like we’ve got him going a bit better than that this year.” Navigator hasn’t been sighted on raceday since he was unplaced in his sole start over spring in the Proisir Plate (Gr 1, 1400m) at Ellerslie in September, but Cole is happy with the way he has come up this time in and is hopeful of a bold showing on Saturday. “He had a jumpout at Te Rapa and he won that comfortably on the bridle, so we know he is back to himself,” Cole said. “He had a few niggles in the spring and we’ve put those behind us and hopefully the best version of him turns up tomorrow, and if he does, he shouldn’t be too far off them.”

Small but quality team for Gerard at Trentham

Matamata trainer Pam Gererad will head south to Trentham on Saturday with a quality team of three runners engaged for the day’s feature meeting. Spearheading the attack will be last start New Zealand 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Romanoff (Belardo) who will be stepping out on raceday for the first time since defeating stablemate Affirmative Action (Yes Yes Yes) in the Riccarton blue riband classic. His mission on the weekend is the Levin Classic (Gr 2, 1400m) with Gerard keen to see him perform to expectations as she prepares the son of Belardo (Lope De Vega) for a pair of major assignments at Ellerslie. “He had a nice freshen-up after returning from Christchurch and this was the race we felt would be best to kick him off in,” Gerard said. “He’s been working along nicely at home and we want to see him perform to expectations, albeit knowing this isn’t his main aim and that the 1400m might be a little on the short side for him. He’s a real character and loves a trip away as he just puts his head down and eats everything you put in front of him, so the whole journey to Wellington and back, along with the race will be perfect for him.” The second member of Gerard’s Trentham team is last season’s New Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) runner-up Dubai Gold (Pride Of Dubai) who will tackle the Phar Lap Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m). “She [Dubai Gold] trialled really well before her first-up run at Counties back in November but then everything went wrong during the race where she got trapped wide throughout,” she said. “We really wanted to see where she stood at weight-for-age against the best fillies and mares so we rolled the dice and ran her second up at Te Rapa in the Cal Isuzu where she just got outsprinted in the closing stages, while she was also feeling the hard track a little. That’s convinced me she really is a better mare in the autumn as that was where she excelled last season when there was some cut in the tracks.” Last-start maiden winner Dragon Blossom (Time Test) rounds out Gerard’s Trentham team in the Blue Star Group 1600 (1600m).

Te Akau set their sights on Derby with exciting three-year-old

Trainers Mark Walker and Sam Bergerson are hoping Towering Vision’s (Circus Maximus) win in the Eagle Technology 1600 (1600m) at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day is a good omen as they look towards the New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) in March with the progressive three-year-old. The last two winners of the New Year’s Day three-year-old mile, Orchestral (Savabeel) (2024) and Willydoit (Tarzino) (2025), have gone on to win the Derby, and Walker and Bergerson are hoping Towering Vision can continue that trend. The stakes winner was fresh-up on Thursday, and punters supported him late, backing him into $3.30 favouritism before the jump. In-form hoop Opie Bosson settled his charge towards the rear of the field where he bided his time before presenting him out wide at the top of the straight and Towering Vision was able to show his class when running over the top of his rivals to score by 0.8 lengths over Sweet Ice (Frosted). “It was a really good patient ride by Opie,” Bergerson said. “It was good to see him relax so well in the blinkers, he still settled well and tracked into the race nicely. We’ve been working back from the Derby the whole way through and we are back on track now. He will take really good confidence from that. He’s only won once before and that was a pretty good field today. The way he hit the line gives us confidence to go up in trip now. We are certainly targeting the middle of March and potentially onto the Waikato Guineas now.”

Sweynesday chugging towards Railway

Trainers Roger James and Robert Wellwood have taken a patient approach with their exciting sprinter Sweynesday (Sweynesse), and they could be rewarded with a Group 1 result in a couple of weeks. The five-year-old son of Sweynesse (Lonhro) extended his impressive form line when reeling in Shoes to win the SkyCity 1200 (1200m) at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day, setting up a return to the Auckland track on January 24 to contest the Sistema Railway (Gr 1, 1200m). From his wide gate, Sweynesday was forced to travel three-wide without cover for much of the journey, but he got on the back of an improving Silent Is Gold (Star Turn) when rounding the final bend. Shoes (Derryn), who had set a solid tempo throughout, kicked clear down the home straight, but Sweynesday took chase and under the urgings of jockey Masa Hashizume he was able to reel her in and nab her on the line to win by 0.2 lengths. “He sat three-wide throughout, he did it tough, but he’s a good horse,” Wellwood said. “That’s eight starts now and he hasn’t finished outside the first two. The second horse is a talented galloper and had a three-kilo claim as well. He did a good job to pick her up. I’m very happy.” With a record of five wins and three runner-up placings from eight starts, Sweynesday’s trainers believe he is up to the task of taking the step up to stakes grade, and they have circled the Railway on Karaka Millions night as his target. “Today was a test to see where we were at and with that [performance] it means that he gets a chance there,” Wellwood said. “I would just love to see him draw a gate, he didn’t have it easy today. He gets in nicely at set weights and penalties in the Railway hence why we didn’t go down to the Telegraph at weight-for-age. It was nice to see him do that and it would be pretty special if we could do the same on Karaka Millions night.”

HK: Sagacious Life back in action ahead of Four-Year-Old Classic Series tilt

Pierre Ng is confident Sagacious Life (Put It Back) can propel his advance towards the Four-Year-Old Classic Series when the trainer’s highest-rated prospect lines up in Sunday’s Class 2 Leighton Handicap (1600m) at Sha Tin. A first-up winner in Hong Kong after arriving from Brazil as a Group 1 winner, the Leslie Lui-owned Sagacious Life makes his third start after finishing an unlucky sixth on November 30, when he was briefly blocked at a crucial stage in the home straight. Ng said: “This weekend will be his third run over a mile. Zac [Purton] trialled him last week and he went pretty well. He liked the horse and he thinks he’s in good form, so hopefully he can add some more [rating] points on Sunday. He’s a very handy horse. He can just jump and be with them behind the pace, and if they go slow then he can be a little bit closer. But he is fit and well after the trial.” Leading rider Zac Purton partners Sagacious Life this weekend from barrier three. Raced as Navio Fantasma pre-import, the chestnut won four races in Brazil, led by success in the Derby Paulista (2400m) in November, 2024. “He was a bit unlucky last start. He didn’t quite get a clear run, but he still ran well and finished off after being held up. He’s pulled up very well, so we’ll just keep managing him, keeping him fit and healthy,” Ng said. “He’ll go to the Classic Mile, the Classic Cup and then the Derby.”
