Weekend winners provide a timely boost for Kia Ora as busy sales period looms

With the all-important Magic Millions sale and carnival fast approaching, Kia Ora Stud could not have asked for a better string of results on Saturday to showcase all facets of their business and the farm’s manager Shane Wright is optimistic the operation is set for another big week on the Gold Coast.

Leading the way on the weekend was the farm’s upwardly mobile Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Farnan (Not A Single Doubt).

What's On

The stallion’s good day was kicked off by Knightsbridge who rocketed into contention for the Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) with a stylish maiden victory at Randwick. Shortly after, across the border in Queensland, another of his sons, the Michael Freedman-trained Ninja, ensured a potentially big afternoon for Farnan at the lucrative raceday a week on Saturday when he advertised his credentials for the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (RL, 1400m) with an explosive performance in the Vo Rogue Plate (Gr 3, 1300m) at Eagle Farm.

The timing of the triumphs was not lost on Wright.

He told ANZ News: “Timing is always important and Farnan had a very good weekend. He’s been building into it over the last few weeks so it was good to see it come together.

“As we all know well, the industry is a very fickle place and you can have two quiet weeks and it doesn’t take much for people to say ‘your horse needs a horse’. I’ve been through it with I Am Invincible when I was at Yarraman, but it’s better off for horses not to be pushed early and coming out and having a big Magics carnival and then kicking on from there.

“As we all know ‘form is temporary and class is permanent’ and I think the very best stallions definitely go by that mantra. With some of the big racing coming up now, to see Knightsbridge come up and show what everyone knew he was able to do, he looks like he could be a good chance in the two-year-old race up there.

Ninja was just exceptional, you don’t find many horses that can win like that at Eagle Farm

Shane Wright

Stud Manager

“Ninja was just exceptional, you don’t find many horses that can win like that at Eagle Farm when they are a bit behind the kick and caught wide and have to come wide around that turn, not many can do that and he looks like he has stepped up to the next level this prep.”

The son of Not A Single Doubt (Redoute’s Choice) closed out his debut season with runners last term with the highest number of winners in 14, one more than his nearest rival, Ole Kirk (Written Tycoon), who was crowned champion first-season by earnings, with Farnan finishing third by that metric. He signed off the 2024/25 season with five stakes performers, more than any other stallion, and the cohort were spearheaded by three Group winners: King Of Pop, North England and Recuperato.

This season he has added 21 new winners to his tally, 18 coming in Australia, and Knightsbridge became number two from his second crop, joining New Zealand-based winner Magill, who broke his maiden at Tauherenikau on January 2.

Meanwhile, Saturday’s win was Ninja’s third from five starts following a close third in the Pierata Plate (1200m) at Doomben on December 6. That run came after a spring spell, with the gelding having previously shown promise through the winter, placing on debut as a late two-year-old in July before winning twice in his first three starts, on August 1 and 16.

Wright said watching Farnan’s first crop come out firing as three-year-olds has given the farm immense satisfaction and Ninja’s performance only underpinned the sort of talented performers the stallion is capable of producing.

“Last season, both Ole Kirk and Farnan showed that they are both two exciting young stallions coming through the ranks and the industry needs that and to have both those two young boys there, especially with our interest in Vinery, it was particularly good to watch,” he said.

“Farnan had a lot of winners last year and some very nice horses and he was the equal most represented horse in the Golden Slipper, which was what we were aiming to do. Then to see some of those nice horses come back as three-year-olds and the two-year-olds coming through - he’s in a very, very good place.”

Even when a stallion has enjoyed a good debut season with runners, there is still the question of whether they will train on in the following year and the answer to that can make or break a stallion’s reputation. Wright is understandably relieved that Farnan has more or less picked up where he left off last year.

“You couldn’t have asked for any more from Ninja and when you have a stallion that you know you can get nice two-year-olds year in year out, but when they come back as three-year-olds, that’s very important,” he said.

“If you look at the Magic Millions calendar he’s got a lot of three-year-olds including King Of Pop, Nashville Jack and North England all entered in big races, which is very satisfying. They were given the time and they are back and looking at the form now, I expect them to be all pretty competitive up there in two weeks’ time.”

Both Ninja and Knightsbridge were sourced at the Magic Millions January sale, the former for $380,000, while the latter sold for $750,000 to James Harron and Tony Fung’s powerful colt partnership.

The pair were two of 20 Farnan yearlings to sell on the Gold Coast 12 months ago for total receipts of $5,535,000 and an average of $276,750, way above the $55,000 (inc GST) he stood for in his year in the breeding shed.

He will be well-represented on the Gold Coast this year with 24 of his yearlings set to come under the hammer and four of those will be offered by Kia Ora.

The quartet includes a colt out of Summer Fun, an unraced mare by I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit), who Kia Ora purchased for $80,000 at the Inglis Broodmare Sale in 2022, two years before her daughter Kimochi (Brave Smash) added serious allure to the pedigree with her defeat of the boys in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Caulfield.

The colt will be offered as Lot 873 during frenetic ‘Super Session’ on January 16.

“He’s a lovely colt,” said Wright. “He’s very straightforward and very much in the mould of a nice Farnan. He’s a decent size, strong and ready to go sort of horse.

“We’ve said it since day dot that temperament is really what sets Farnan apart from the rest. They are very tractable and trainable and trainers love to have them in their barns and this colt is no different.”

The farm will also consign a son of Farnan (Lot 786) out of New Zealand Group 3 winner Serious Satire (More Than Ready), who will also be offered during the ‘Super Session’.

“He’s a nice horse and might take a little bit longer to come to grow into,” said Wright.

Serious Satire was a $675,000 pick up for Kia Ora at the 2021 edition of the Inglis Chairman’s Sale and she delivered a good result last year when her colt by Extreme Choice, another son of Not A Single Doubt, fetched $340,000 to the bid of Mick Price Racing & Breeding, TFI, Dermot Farrington and Stallion Match.

Kia Ora’s Farnan four is completed by a ‘lovely’ colt out of Listed-placed winner Huboor (More Than Ready) (Lot 358) and a filly from Ducale (I Am Invincible), a dual-winning sister to Ken Russell Memorial Classic (Gr 3, 1200m) winner Nettuno.

Ducale was bought by Kia Ora in foal to Exceed And Excel (Danehill) for $360,000 at the 2023 Magic Millions Broodmare Sale. The operation almost broke even when the resulting filly sold to New Zealand-based trainer Tony Pike and Woburn Farm for $300,000 Inglis Easter sale last year.

Wright said he had high hopes for this year’s offering out of Ducale, describing Lot 235 as a ‘queen’.

“She has the best profile you’ll come across in a filly,” he said. “She’s a beautiful type and has as much quality as you could want in a filly. She’s very straightforward and perfectly balanced.”

Having inspected Farnan’s yearlings set to be offered by other farms, Wright is pleased with the quality shining through and believes many breeders have cottoned on quickly which mares best suit the stallion.

He explained: “I’ve seen a few Farnans at other farms, but still have a lot more to get through and we are very happy with the quality coming through. I think people really have got a handle on what to breed to the stallion to get the best result possible.

“Every year his crops have been improving in physical types and every year he’s covered over 150 mares and numbers do definitely help and he’s got that on his side.

“I think he’s suited to those similar mares we used to breed to Snitzel and Not A Single Doubt to: a nice strong, ready to go sort of mare. People want to send these big mares and with that you end up getting a big foal. He’s out of a Street Cry mare himself and type on type is always the way forward and I don’t think it’s necessary to reinvent the wheel.”

Magic Millions is the precursor for a busy sales period ahead and Wright thinks it’s an important week for studs to showcase the best of what a stallion has to offer, setting the right tone for the rest of the year.

“Magics is a key sale for a lot reasons and it’s important at the start of the sale to get a good start and get some of your earlier types out there into the market and breeders, trainers and syndicators and whoever else can see what you’ve been doing over the last two years and that can instil big confidence not only in the stallion, but the brand itself,” he said.

Kia Ora’s talents were not only on show through the exploits of Farnan on Saturday. The stud’s brand also carried to victory by the ever impressive Warwoven (Sword Of State), who shot to the head of the market for the Magic Millions 2YO Classic when proving far too strong for his rivals in the QTIS Two-Year-Old Handicap over 1200 metres at Eagle Farm.

Out of the New Zealand Group 2 winner Needle And Thread (Makfi), the son of Cambridge Stud’s talented first-season sire Sword Of State (Snitzel) was bred and raised at Kia Ora and sold at last year’s Magic Millions sale to his now trainer Bjorn Baker, Jim Clarke and an ownership group which includes Ridgmont for $380,000, making him the most expensive yearling sold by the sire in Australia in 2025.

“It sounds easy to say now, but he was the most beautiful colt,” Wright said. “I had the conversation with a lot of people on the Gold Coast last year ‘you need to come see my Sword Of State colt, he’s a standout’.

“A lot of people did and he was very popular at the sales. Well done to Jim Clarke, Bjorn Baker and the Ridgmont Team, they’re the ones that put their necks on the line and bid up.

“He was a standout from day one and again, it’s what we try to do, the way we raise them, the way they are handled - we try and give them the best start in life we possibly can and hopefully that start can reap the rewards on the racecourse, like it will hopefully do with this colt.”

With a draft of 17 yearlings headed for the Gold Coast sale, which begins a week on Tuesday, Wright said these sorts of results can only instil confidence in the buyers when Kia Ora’s offerings enter the ring.

He said: “At Kia Ora, we pride ourselves in producing racehorses, having done it for many, many years.

“If you look at our draft last year, there’s Warwoven who’s favourite for the Magic Millions 2YO Classic and also I’m Ya Huckleberry, that’s two already that have come out and put their hand up for some big races, then you take a horse like Invincible Son, he came third in the Magic Millions race in Victoria [2YO Classic] and is now on a Blue Diamond path.

“These sorts of results show what we’re trying to produce, not only with our own brand with our stallions as well, we're trying to get the end result and it’s very important to us to deliver for anyone that supports us in the stallion barn or in the ring.”

Weather watch for Nadal’s connections

Nadal (Credit: Racing Photos)

Weather conditions in Melbourne will play a decisive role in whether Nadal (Xtravagant) gets the chance to turn the tables on Hedged (Capitalist) in Saturday’s $200,000 Standish Handicap (Gr 3, 1200m) at Flemington. The Ciaron Maher stable is preparing the five-year-old as though he will line up in the Group 3 sprint, but remain wary of the forecast following a hot week in Victoria. Temperatures are expected to climb beyond 40 degrees midweek before easing on raceday, when showers are also predicted – a factor Maher’s assistant trainer Jack Turnbull said could determine whether Nadal takes his place. "It's an option, but it's more weather-dependent," Turnbull said from Geelong, where the track rated a Good 3 on Saturday. "If the ground was to be like today, you'd probably wait. We'd love a drop of rain and we're under no pressure: he could really keep poking along through autumn and winter. He's being prepped for it, but we'll have to see." Turnbull believes Nadal’s last-start Christmas Stakes (Listed, 1200m) runner-up effort was the strongest showing of his current campaign. "He was good, he just had to run through a bit of traffic, but the winner was impressive," he said. "He's probably at his peak for fitness, we've just got to maintain that. He went out last prep for knee issues, so it's a matter of us just holding that balance, which we have. He's been fine at the moment, but to run him on a fast track would probably be a chance to undo him." If Nadal is withdrawn, Maher could still be represented in the Standish with Extratwo (Toronado), who also contested the Christmas Stakes, finishing sixth and just over a length behind Nadal. "She's on the borderline of being a Listed, Group 3 mare in the right class and race, but we just need to place her as best we can," Turnbull said.

Maharba set for Standish return

Grahame Begg is confident Maharba (Pride Of Dubai) has been brought up to the mark for his return in Saturday’s Standish Handicap. The multiple stakes-winning sprinter will resume for the first time in more than nine months, having not raced since finishing unplaced in the William Reid Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) in March last year. Begg has ensured the five-year-old is well conditioned for the first-up assignment, giving him two jump-outs and a barrier trial, including an eye-catching win in a Cranbourne jump-out last Monday. Maharba boasts strong straight-track credentials, having won a Rising Fast Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) on Derby Day in 2024, while he also finished runner-up in the Winterbottom Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) in Perth later that season. Begg admitted he was not satisfied with the way the gelding came through his winter spell and elected to send him for an extended break. Since returning to work, however, the trainer has been delighted with his progress. “He’s going as well as he could ever go,” Begg told Racing.com. “He’s had three positive trials leading into Saturday. I had to have him up to the mark to go 1200 metres first-up because there was no lead-up race, which was disappointing. They changed races around; the Kensington Stakes went to 1400 metres but there’s no lead-in race to the Standish Handicap between December and January. He’s got good form up the straight. He’s won on Derby Day and he has won at Talindert [Stakes] as a two-year-old. You’re going to be taking on horses that are probably a lot fitter, but he’s been very positive in everything we’ve asked him to do.” Jordan Childs has been booked to ride Maharba, while Begg will also be represented in the Standish by Samangu (Written By), with Michael Dee to take the mount on the mare.

Baker plots Melbourne tilt for Pericles

Pericles (Credit: Racing Photos)

Bjorn Baker has Melbourne’s early autumn features firmly in mind for Pericles (Street Boss), with the gelding set to chase a breakthrough Group 1 success in the coming months. The Godolphin-owned six-year-old is being aimed at races such as the Futurity Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) in February and the All-Star Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) in March, following a spring campaign that again confirmed his credentials among Australia’s elite milers. A winner of seven of his 31 starts, Pericles went close to securing his first Group 1 victory at his most recent outing when finishing a narrow second to Ceolwulf (Tavistock) in testing conditions in the Champions Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) at Flemington on November 8. It marked the sixth time Pericles has placed at Group 1 level, and Baker said he has been pleased with how the multiple stakes winner has returned. “Pericles is back and he might make his way down for some of those early Melbourne races. I’m very happy with him,” the trainer said on Correct Weight on RSN on Sunday when outlining his autumn plans. The $2 million All-Star Mile at Flemington on March 7 looms as a key target. “That’s one of the options for sure,” Baker said. “Probably a race like the Futurity into the All-Star. He was so good during the spring up against the best. It was a great race, the Champions Mile, that’s for sure. The bob didn’t quite go our way, but it was a fantastic race.” Under former trainer James Cummings, Pericles contested the Futurity Stakes for the past two seasons, finishing runner-up in 2024 and eighth last year. This year’s edition will be run at Caulfield on February 21.

Attica booked in for Friday trial

Attica (Lonhro) will make his first public appearance since spring when the Group 1-winning colt returns to the trials at Warwick Farm on Friday. The three-year-old son of Lonhro (Octagonal) is well advanced in his preparation for the Autumn Carnival and is expected to have the first of up to three trials at his home track as Joe Pride builds toward a return. Attica has not been seen since his dominant win in the Spring Champion Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at Randwick on October 25, a victory that came at just his fourth career start and less than two months after his debut. Despite only a brief let-up, Pride said the colt has returned in excellent order. "He only had a short let-up and I've been really happy with him," the trainer said. "It was all in his first racing preparation last time around, but he's made some nice improvement and I'm really pleased with the way he's moving along.” Bred and raced by Godolphin, Attica is being aimed at a first-up return in the Hobartville Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Rosehill on February 21, with the Randwick Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) on March 7 shaping as his early Group 1 target. "He'll more than likely have three trials and he'll be in the Hobartville first-up," Pride said. "We just have to be guided by how he goes in those first few runs.” Attica’s second trial, scheduled for January 22 at Warwick Farm, is also expected to mark the return of stable star Ceolwulf. Pride said his autumn campaign will also be approached with flexibility. "It will be a similar plan with him this time around, we'll get some racing into him and see where he's at," he said of the four-time Group 1 winner.

Waller set for strong hand in Wyong feature

Chris Waller could saddle up to five runners in Saturday’s $500,000 The Lakes (1600m) at Wyong as he looks to maintain his unbeaten record in the Central Coast feature. Waller claimed the inaugural running of the race last year when Waterford (Awtaad) prevailed in a driving finish over Robusto (Churchill), and the champion trainer again shapes as a major player with a strong hand headed by multiple Group winner Konasana (Dundeel). She is set to be joined by Chica Mojito (Zacinto) and Pippie Beach (Maurice), who finished third and fourth respectively in the recent Belle Of The Turf (Gr 3, 1600m) at Gosford, while last-start Randwick winner Mare Of Mt Buller (Dundeel) and the consistent Sun God (Fastnet Rock) complete Waller’s likely contingent. “Konasana is working her way into some form, we missed the Gosford race because she drew wide and had a big weight," Waller told Racing NSW. “Last start she finished off better, Regan Bayliss knows her well and they were his words. Chica Mojito was very unlucky and the race looks to suit. It’s a good representation, I often get worried about going to Wyong but it actually races quite well on these bigger days when there’s a bit more speed on.” Nominations for all races on the Wyong program close at 11am on Monday.

Lucky escape for Yendall

Dean Yendall was grateful to be back in the saddle on Sunday, with his victory aboard Russian Choice (Russian Camelot) at Stawell coming less than 24 hours after the six-time Group 1-winning jockey was involved in a car accident on his way to the races. Well supported in betting, Russian Choice was crunched into $2.60 (from $10) and justified that confidence by leading throughout over 1300 metres, giving Yendall a memorable win following a difficult and unexpected lead-up. The rider was involved in a two-car collision at Geelong on Saturday morning and, while he sustained only minor injuries, he was stood down from riding duties on the day. “I was heading to the Geelong races yesterday, down by one of the main drags, Fyans St and Moorabool [Road] intersection,” Yendall told Racing.com. “Some poor lady forgot to give way, and we accidentally ploughed through and T-boned her. Luckily her and her two little ones were ok afterwards. Bit unlucky, but at least we’re here to tell the story. I got home eventually and ticked off that day as an absolute disaster, but lucky so to speak…here I am today, punching home winners.”

Racing NSW warns stables over use of industrial-grade DMSO

Racing NSW has issued an industry notice clarifying its position on the possession and use of Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) products within licensed thoroughbred racing stables, following recent stable inspections. Racing NSW said inspections had identified the use of industrial-grade DMSO products, a liquid that is sometimes used to help reduce inflammation and pain, including Pharmachem DMSO, being administered to horses in training, in some cases intravenously or via nasogastric tube and without veterinary prescription. While acknowledging that DMSO may have legitimate therapeutic applications when prescribed, Racing NSW warned that unregulated use of industrial-grade products presents significant legal, welfare and safety risks to horses and stable personnel.
The notice confirms that industrial-grade DMSO products are not classified as veterinary chemical products under the AgVet Code, nor as stock medicines under the Stock Medicines Act, and are therefore not appropriate for administration to horses in racing stables by any route. Racing NSW said any such products identified during inspections will be seized, with trainers potentially subject to penalties under the rules of racing. Any veterinarian who considers such treatment necessary must have the product compounded by a licensed compounding pharmacy and prescribe it on an individual basis for a specific horse, in accordance with legislative requirements.

Anxious wait for connections of State The Obvious

State The Obvious (Credit: Race Images)

Connections of State The Obvious (Sword Of State) face an anxious few weeks as they wait to see if their filly makes the cut for the $1 million TAB Karaka Millions 2YO (RL, 1200m) at Ellerslie on January 24. The daughter of Sword Of State (Snitzel) made a strong play at Te Aroha on Saturday when breaking her maiden over 1000 metres, with her $10,360 winning cheque bringing her earnings to $11,285, placing her in 20th position in order of entry for the Karaka Millions, meaning she will require plenty of luck to make the 14-runner field as the current sixth emergency. “That [Karaka Millions] is the reason why we ran yesterday,” said Graham Richardson, who trains the filly in partnership with Rogan Norvall. “We thought if she could handle the wet track and win, then we are a chance [of making the Karaka Millions field], but if we step back and scratch we were no chance. It was about experience as well. She has pulled up this morning like she never had a race, which is incredible for a two-year-old.” While State The Obvious is an outside shot of qualifying for the rich feature, her trainers are not tempted to give her another run in a last-ditch effort to make the field, and have set their sights on an alternative. “If I have to panic and give her another run before then it is just not worth it,” Richardson said. “There are still a couple of races to go and if she doesn’t get in then she’ll head to the Matamata Breeders’ Stakes as a back-up plan.”

Big future predicted for Miss Jones

Miss Jones (Deep Field) showed plenty of promise in Australia, placing in six of her ten starts for Richard and Will Freedman, but she has found her groove since crossing the Tasman. The mare broke through for her maiden win when victorious on New Zealand debut for her new trainer Cody Cole at Ellerslie last month, and doubled her tally at Trentham on Saturday when taking out the opening 1200-metre contest. From her outside draw in the seven-runner field, she was taken forward by Opie Bosson to sit outside the pacemaker and when asked to improve entering the home straight, she quickly responded and ran away to a 2.5-length victory over the previously unbeaten Thorax (Ribchester). “She was a little angel,” Bosson said. “She jumped well and just took our time getting across and once we got there she travelled beautifully and gave me a really good kick when I asked the question. She gives you the feel that she has got some gears. I know it has taken her a while to win a race, but I think she is putting it all together now.” Cole was confident of another bold showing on Saturday and believes Miss Jones has a bright future if she continues on her current trajectory. “She was good. Opie has got a lovely set of hands and I think she appreciated that,” he said. “She probably appreciates the New Zealand environment a bit more too. She switched off early enough that she was going to find a nice kick late and she did. Opie sat there quietly for as long as he could and it was perfect. If she keeps improving her racing manners there’s no reason she can’t get to a good level. It wasn’t a big field but there were some nice horses in it. Today was a good sign and a step in the right direction.”

Myers dominates Greymouth card

Kevin Myers and apprentice Floor Moerman proved a winning combination at Omoto on Sunday, combining for a treble at the Greymouth meeting highlighted by victory in the Greymouth Cup (2000m) with Sunset Boulevard (Eminent). The Peter Vela-bred and raced gelding was well supported in the betting for the feature, having been freshened since scoring twice during New Zealand Cup Week in November, and delivered accordingly. Moerman rode positively from the outset aboard the son of Eminent (Frankel), and approaching the back straight made a decisive move, sending him to the front and opening a break on the field. Stablemate and last year’s winner Kick On (Per Incanto) gave chase and drew alongside with 200 metres to run, the pair providing a stirring finish for the holiday crowd, with Sunset Boulevard digging deep to repel the challenge. “They both kicked clear and I was pretty confident at the 600 metres when they had the rest of them off the bit,” stable representative Luke Myers said. “Kick On went really well at Wellington last start and we thought he could almost pop Sunset Boulevard today, and almost did, but Sunset’s class got him through.” Earlier on the card, Myers and Moerman opened their treble when New Zealand Cup (Gr 3, 3200m) winner Bozo (Satono Aladdin) claimed the Miss Scenicland Stakes (1500m). The 93-rated mare justified $1.60 favouritism with a decisive victory and is likely to back up in Saturday’s Kumara Gold Nuggets (1810m) at Kumara. Moerman completed her treble aboard the Myers-trained Sheaf (Eminent) in the Jack Curragh Memorial (2000m).

75 for Zoustar

Widden Stud’s reigning Australian Champion Sire Zoustar (Northern Meteor) sired his 75th individual stakes winner courtesy of the ready success of Stellar Express (6 g ex Darinja by Shamardal) in the Bauhinia Sprint Trophy (Gr 3, 1000m) at Sha Tin on Sunday. Trained by John Size, the six-year-old made a successful debut in stakes company as he beat favourite Colourful King (Blue Point) by three lengths, with Invincible Sage (Thronum) a length and a quarter further away in third. Bred by Princess Zahra Aga Khan, Stellar Express is the third foal out of Darinja (Shamardal), who herself is out of a half-sister to French 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Darjina. Zoustar covered 162 mares in 2025 at a fee of $275,000 (inc GST).

Six for Rey De Oro

Shadai Stallion Station resident Rey De Oro (King Kamehameha) added to his tally of stakes winners when Kalamatianos (4 c ex Dancar by Heart's Cry) struck in Sunday’s Sho Nakayama Kimpai (Gr 3, 2000m) to move the total onto six. The Takeshi Okumura-trained four-year-old was winning for the third time in ten starts as he beat the fellow Sunday Racing-owned favourite Angola Black (Kizuna) by a nose with just a neck further back to third-placed Gran Dia (Harbinger). Kalamatianos is the first foal out of Dancar (Heart's Cry) who herself is a sister to the dam of Grade 1 winner Cavallerizzo (Saturnalia). Rey De Oro will stand the upcoming northern hemisphere breeding season for a fee of ¥2,500,000 (approx. AU$23,820).

13 for Leontes

Buena Onda (5 h ex Awesome Wind by Deep Impact) became the 13th individual stakes winner for Leontes (King Kamehameha) when he landed Sunday’s Sho Kyoto Kimpai (Gr 3, 1600m). The Naosuke Sugai-trained five-year-old followed up a Listed-placed effort on his previous start as he beat Fervent (Heart’s Cry) by a head. Shonan Addeybb (Deep Impact) finished a neck further behind in third. Buena Onda is the best of three named foals out of the winning Deep Impact (Sunday Silence) mare Awesome Wind.

Size clinches sixth Bauhinia Sprint Trophy success with Stellar Express

John Size’s dominance of the Bauhinia Sprint Trophy Handicap (Gr 3, 1000m) continued at Sha Tin on Sunday when Stellar Express (Zoustar) delivered the trainer’s sixth victory in the race.

Ridden by Andrea Atzeni, Stellar Express delivered 13-time Hong Kong champion trainer Size’s third win in the race since 2022 – after the previous triumphs of Grand Delight (Hurricane Sky) (2003), Amazing Kids (Falkirk) (2017), Premiere (Dylan Thomas) (2018), Sight Success (Magnus) (2023) and Howdeepisyourlove (Deep Field) (2025).

Size slotted a double to continue a familiar mid-season surge to have 16 wins for the campaign after Stellar Express posted his fourth course and distance triumph with an explosive display of speed.

“He seemed to leave nothing else to chance, he jumped cleanly and got to the front and just made one act of it,” said Size. “He’s done that before, when he gets some favours on this track, down the outside, he seems to keep running – he certainly enjoys it.

“The light weight is going to help, but he looks like a track specialist over the course and distance.”

Jumping from gate five, Stellar Express quickly cleared the rest of the field and crossed to the grandstand rail to take control of the contest. Leading by four lengths at the 200 metres, the French-bred gelding posted his fourth course and distance victory in 55.85s to comfortably defeat luckless Colourful King (Blue Point) by three lengths in 55.85s. Group 1 winner Invincible Sage (Thronum) was third.

Atzeni said: “He was carrying a light weight and it was all about the start. Once he pinged up the gates and linked up with the horses on my outside, I knew I could get to the rail and once I managed to get to the fence, he travelled comfortably.

“I tried to hang onto him for as long as a could and when I let him down, he picked up good and when I looked up at the screen, I couldn’t believe how far clear I was. I thought it was a good performance.”

Colourful King could not get clear until too late, steaming over the final 400 metres sectional in a race-best 22.05s.

Size also struck in partnership with Brenton Avdulla when Sight Hermoso (Headwater) charged to victory in the Class 4 Tsam Chuk Wan Handicap (1000m).

Sagacious Life (Put It Back) underlined his rich potential ahead of the Four-Year-Old Classic Series with a strong win in the Class 2 Leighton Handicap (1600m) for Pierre Ng and Zac Purton.

Jumping smartly from gate three, the Brazilian import settled fourth behind fellow South American Winfield (Rally Cry) before angling out approaching the home straight and sprinting sharply to defeat Soleil Fighter (Sea The Moon) by three-quarters of a length in 1m 34.09s. Fellow Four-Year-Old Classic Series aspirant Top Dragon (Pierata) was third.

The authority of the victory prompted Ng to outline plans to head directly to the Hong Kong Classic Mile (Listed, 1600m) on February 1 – the first of the three-race Four-Year-Old Classic Series, which also includes the Hong Kong Classic Cup (Listed, 1800m) on March 1 and Hong Kong Derby (Listed, 2000m) on March 22.

“Straight to the Classic Mile – that’s our plan,” Ng said. “He’s got the rating [90] already. We tried to put as light a pressure on him as possible and he handled it brilliantly. We’ve got pressure off our back and look forward to the next one.

“He’s got very good form and you always trust the rating – he still needs to be a little bit mature. When he’s parading, he’s still looking around and a bit toey. If we get that out of him, he’ll be much nicer.”

Purton was also effusive in his praise of the gelding.

“It was a really good effort for a young horse to carry a big weight in that case. Of course, he was in the right spot, had the right run, but he still had to get the job done,” he said.

Mark Newnham extended his lead at the top of the trainers’ championship when Supreme Sea (Sebring) debuted successfully in the second section of Class 4 Tai Mong Tsai Handicap (1200m, dirt) under Lyle Hewitson.

Supreme Sea was trained in Australia by Steve Hodge, who also prepared Newnham’s stable star My Wish (Flying Artie) before the subsequent winner of last season’s Hong Kong Classic Mile was exported to Hong Kong.

With 28 victories for the term, Newnham leads Caspar Fownes (27), Danny Shum (25) and David Hayes (24) after 34 meetings.

Hayes scored with Positive Smile (Per Incanto) under a facile Keith Yeung ride in the Class 4 Po Leung Kuk Cup Handicap (1400m) before Loyal Bright (Better Than Ready) claimed a PP Bonus of HK$1.5 million (approx. AU$287,595) for victory in the Class 3 Pak Tam Chung Handicap (1200m) for Frankie Lor and Derek Leung.

Maxime Guyon continued an impressive short-term stint with a double, scoring on Ricky Yiu’s The Concentration (Hellbent) in the Class 5 Tai Lam Handicap (1400m) and Francis Lui’s Gallant Epoch (Iffraaj) in the first section of the Class 4 Broadwood Handicap (1400m).

“It’s been amazing, I start really well this year,” Guyon said after posting his ninth win from 65 mounts. “This horse [Gallant Epoch] ran well last start when he was second and, today, he was favourite and we could go to the front – not too fast – and he kicked again and was strong.”

Yiu and Purton completed doubles when Victory Sky (U S Navy Flag) swept to victory in the Class 3 Tai Tong Shan Handicap (1200m, dirt).

Tony Cruz and Angus Chung combined with Bright Mortar (Starspangledbanner) in the first section of the Class 4 Tai Mong Tsai Handicap (1200m, dirt) before Lovero (Lord Kanaloa) claimed his first Sha Tin success by landing the Class 3 Tai Tong Handicap (1600m) for Brett Crawford and Harry Bentley.
