Tough as teak homebred mare Miss Joelene (Russian Revolution) will headline a three-pronged attack set to launch on the opening day of the Magic Millions Carnival for racing, breeding and life partners Darren Wilson and Janelle Whalley, who operate under the Wilrace banner.

The couple established Wilrace from the back yard of their suburban Brisbane property back in 2017, since when they have acquired some 15 broodmares and more recently purchased Washpool Lodge on Queensland’s famed Darling Downs, a boutique spelling and breaking in facility operated by Wilson’s son-in-law and elite Australian event rider Andrew Cooper.

As one of the first foals they reared, Miss Joelene has long been Wilrace’s flagbearer and if the Kelly Schweida-trained mare can successfully defend her title in Saturday’s Magic Millions The Wave (1800m) at the Gold Coast, she would break through $1.4 million in prize-money earnings.

Earlier on the twilight program, the recently gelded King Of Pop (Farnan) and their homebred chestnut Manpower (Trapeze Artist) will also carry the Wilrace blue and white silks in the Sunlight Consolation 3YO Plate (1100m).

What's On

Wilson and Whalley will both be trackside to witness the action and while their stakes winner King Of Pop is well-fancied to make a triumphant return to action following a disappointing spring campaign, it is undoubtedly Miss Joelene who carries the greatest weight of expectation.

The five-year-old mare, a general $3 favourite for The Wave, will jump from barrier nine in the highly capable hands of Cejay Graham, the affable young rider who has been in the saddle for two of Miss Joelene’s seven career wins including her most recent success in the Tails Stakes (Listed, 1500m) at Eagle Farm.

All being well, Miss Joelene will progress to the $1 million Magic Millions Subzero (2200m) on Saturday week, with a trip south to Sydney provisionally pencilled in for the late autumn months.

“She’s in really great shape at the moment,” Whalley told ANZ News.

“She really seems to thrive in the stable environment and is loving life at the minute. Her last run [second in the Listed Members Mile] was another huge effort, she was ahead one stride after the line but she just couldn’t quite get there in time. It wasn’t for want of trying, she’s a mare that has tried her heart out from day one but being a backmarker, luck can often play a part in the result.

“She’s well and truly ready for the step up in trip to 1800 metres now, the further the better for her at this stage of her preparation so the added distance of the Subzero would suit her even more the following week. She’s just so tough and honest, she’s very straightforward and quite relaxed at home but is a real competitor when she gets to the races.

“She was quite a gangly, narrow filly to begin with, but she’s really furnished and matured as she’s got older. She loves her work and she usually does better in the stables than she does in the paddock, although her most recent time off was probably the best she’s spelled and we’re now seeing the result of that in her performances on the racetrack.

“She’s often last on the turn and leaves herself too much to do, but hopefully she can be one or two pairs closer on Saturday. We’ll leave that up to Cejay, she knows the mare really well so we’re happy to trust her instincts. We had some offers from interstate jockeys to take the ride but we’re both generally pretty loyal people, and Cejay hasn’t done anything wrong on the mare. She’s done a good job and is riding well, so it wouldn’t be fair to take her off the horse.”

Miss Joelene is one of only two live foals produced by stakes-winning mare Cellargirl (More Than Ready), who sadly died while giving birth to a Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) filly which subsequently also perished.

The other, Miss Joelene’s stablemate Autumngirl (The Autumn Sun), finished sixth over an unsuitably short distance at Eagle Farm on Wednesday afternoon. While the direct lineage has stopped there, Wilrace have high hopes for the progeny of Cellargirl’s half-sister Cellarmaid (Husson), who is carrying a foal by Darley’s talk of the town freshman sire Anamoe (Street Boss).

“It was terribly sad when we lost Cellargirl,” said Whalley.

“But we still feel very fortunate that we got Miss Joelene out of her, and hopefully Autumngirl can also find some form when she gets over further ground. Even if she doesn’t perform up to expectations, I’m sure she’ll still be capable of producing some very nice foals for us because as we’ve seen plenty of times in the past, some of the better broodmares haven’t necessarily had the greatest careers on the track.”

Whalley and Wilson will be hoping that theory applies to I Am Venus (I Am Invincible), their homebred mare whose speedy son Manpower - perhaps ironically given his moniker - carries the hopes of his all-female ownership group in Saturday’s $250,000 Sunlight Consolation Plate.

The three-year-old is trained by Whalley’s son-in-law Adam Campton, who also prepares Manpower’s half-brother King Of The Road (Bivouac), a juvenile colt yet to make his debut.

I Am Venus was a reasonably moderate performer on the racetrack but she has made a very encouraging start to her time in the breeding barn, with her first foal Pride Of Venus (Pride Of Dubai) having won four of her six starts this prep for Rockhampton trainer Clinton Taylor.

If her second foal Manpower, who flew out of the blocks with back-to-back wins this campaign, can outrun his price of $35 on his home track on Saturday, Whalley would be delighted if not entirely surprised.

“We’re actually pretty hopeful that he can run well on Saturday,” she said.

“He didn’t run up to his best at his last start, but he pulled up with the thumps so there were legitimate excuses. But everything seems to be fine with him now, so even though it’s a much harder race on Saturday I would still expect to see him improve on his last run.”

Given that King Of Pop won the Black Opal Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) and was beaten a head in the Kindergarten Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) by North Of England (Farnan), the gelding is clearly the class horse in the Sunlight Consolation Plate field but he will need to rediscover his mojo having lost his way during the spring.

Perhaps his mind was on other matters, hence the gelding operation which Whalley hopes will be the making of him.

“He was very impressive in his first prep but then he didn’t stand up second time around,” she said.

“He’s been working well and we’re hoping that the travel up to the Gold Coast and a change of scenery will help spark him into life. He’s drawn perfectly in barrier five and Gerald [Ryan] is very happy with him, so there won’t be any excuses on Saturday and we just need him to put his hand up again.

“We don’t have any firm plans with him after Saturday, it will all depend on how he runs but hopefully he can find some form again because he’s a very good horse on his day. The Farnans are going particularly well at the moment, so hopefully he can build on that momentum.”

Aztec Ruler primed for tougher Standish test

Aztec Ruler (Credit: TBWA)

Stefan Vahala believes Aztec Ruler (Universal Ruler) faces a stronger assignment in this year’s Standish Handicap (Gr 3, 1200m), but the trainer is confident his Perth-based stable star arrives at Flemington in career-best form. The gelding returns to Victoria aiming to go one better than last year, when he was beaten a head by straight-track specialist It’sourtime (Time For War). While carrying 1.5 kilograms less than 12 months ago, Vahala concedes the depth of Saturday’s field has increased. "He's going better than last year, but I think unfortunately the field's a bit stronger," he said. "My bloke's definitely going better than ever, though, so we're looking forward to it." Aztec Ruler drops to 57.5kg after carrying 59kg in last year’s edition and will meet Christmas Stakes (Listed, 1200m) winner Hedged (Capitalist) at level weights. His lead-up profile mirrors last season, finishing sixth in the Gold Rush (Gr 3, 1400m), but it was his second placing behind subsequent Northerly Stakes (Gr 1, 1800m) winner Cosmic Crusader (Maurice) that prompted Vahala to head east again. "His last run, he was ridden against his pattern and got tired, but he put himself in the race and was really strong until the last 150 metres. In previous preps he would have really dropped out," Vahala said. "His run before that, running second to probably WA's best horse in Cosmic Crusader, that was a big run as well. So without winning, he's been very good." Drawn barrier six, Aztec Ruler will again be partnered by Chris Parnham.

Nichols wary of first-up test for Esha

Despite starting in the market in a weight-for-age Group 1 at just her third career run, trainer Shane Nichols is taking nothing for granted as Esha (Extreme Choice) resumes in Saturday’s $150,000 Jockey Celebration Sprint (1100m) at Flemington. The Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt) filly out of Group 1 winner I Am A Star (I Am Invincible) returns off an eye-catching 1000-metre Balnarring jump-out win on New Year’s Eve, but Nichols concedes the straight-track assignment presents several unknowns. "She's got 60 kilos, she's 1100 metres first-up off one trial and is down the straight first time," the Mornington-based trainer, who operates in partnership with Hayden Black, said. "There are a few variables there that we don't know about. Physically she looks very good, her work's been good and she's sound." Esha boasts a flawless first-up record, having won on debut at Morphettville in May before being spelled and returning with an even more impressive victory at The Valley on August 9. That performance earned her a start in the Moir Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m), where she finished eighth, a result she later replicated in the Champagne Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m). Saturday’s race forms part of a measured build-up towards the autumn. "This is just a nice lead into the Peter Le Grand Stakes, a Group 3 over 1100 at Caulfield in four weeks," Nichols said. "She'll have that run under her belt and didn't have a hard spring. She's still quite immature but she's certainly furnished." Lachlan Neindorf will partner Esha on Saturday, becoming her fifth different raceday rider in as many starts, with the filly drawing barrier 12.

Midnite Storm set for Flemington debut

Ciaron Maher’s imported stayer Midnite Storm (Night Of Thunder) is set to make his Australian debut in Saturday’s $80,000 National Jockeys Trust BM70 Trophy (1600m) at Flemington, more than a year after his last start in England. Formerly trained by Kevin Ryan, the five-year-old entire was last seen finishing unplaced over 1m 4f at Goodwood in July 2024. He was an acceptor for Geelong last week but connections opted for Flemington, believing the extra distance and bigger track better suit him. "More the distance, being a mile, and the bigger track," Maher’s assistant Jack Turnbull said. "We drew off the track at Geelong and didn't really like the shape of the race. An extra gallop goes a long way, he’s a bull, and that'll just tighten him up a bit more." Midnite Storm broke his maiden over 1m 2f at Redcar following five consecutive placings. He has had one trial last February and three jump-outs this campaign, most recently a third over 1200 metres at Cranbourne on December 22. "He's a progressive stayer of the future," Turnbull said. "He's got a pretty in-tact handicap of 66 and I'd imagine he'll be one of those off-season stayers that just goes bang, bang through the handicap system. Hopefully we can just try and improve his profile before, potentially, a spring campaign." Irish jockey Robert Whearty will ride Midnite Storm from barrier seven.

Robusto bidding to go one better in The Lakes

Robusto (Credit: Racing photos)

Trainer Bjorn Baker is increasingly confident veteran campaigner Robusto (Churchill) can go one better in Saturday’s $500,000 The Lakes (1600m) at Wyong, while acknowledging stablemate Amor Victorious (Caravaggio) shapes as a major danger. Robusto was narrowly beaten in the inaugural running of the race last year and, at first glance, Baker’s confidence took a knock when the gelding drew the outside barrier under 61 kilograms, but with scratchings reducing the field to ten the draw is less problematic. Both Baker runners arrive off strong Queensland form, with Amor Victorious taking out the Members Mile (Listed, 1600m) at Eagle Farm two weeks ago, while Robusto backs up after another gallant runner-up effort in the Buffering (1400m), which came after a strong third in the Ingham Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) last month despite pulling up with thumps. “He’s a remarkable horse, his run last week was great,” Baker told Racing NSW of Robusto. “He didn’t draw a gate and we didn’t have any luck with the gates again. Amor Victorious is very well, he’s coming off a really good win. We’ll be positive with him and have a think about how we ride Robusto.” Robusto has won close to $2 million since joining the yard and Baker believes he remains somewhat underrated. “Both have been great for the stable, particularly Robusto,” Baker said. “His run in the Buffering was every bit as good as last year. We’ve just been unlucky to run into some good ones.” Amor Victorious finished 1.1 lengths behind Robusto in The Ingham and meets his stablemate one-kilogram better at Wyong. “He had to absorb pressure mid-race last time and I think Wyong will really suit,” Baker said. “I’m looking forward to getting him out and rolling.”

Dodson content with Wyong target for Petticoat

Brett Dodson believes Saturday’s $160,000 Lawrie McKinna Mayor’s Cup F\&M BM78 Handicap (1100m) at Wyong is a suitable alternative for Petticoat (Better Than Ready) after the mare narrowly missed Magic Millions qualification. The Coffs Harbour trainer opted against a Gold Coast Class 6, instead targeting Wyong, where the four-year-old mare benefits from a favourable rating and an apprentice claim. "She didn't start enough times in the provincial and country area in the last 12 months, so that put paid to the Country Cup at the Magic Millions and there was another Class 6 Plate up there, but I just thought that was going to be a high-pressure 1200-metre race," Dodson said. "So I spotted Wyong and with the race's 78 rating – she's about a 72 now – that gets her in reasonably and then when we take another two kilos off with Anna's [Roper] claim, that brings her in even better." A $100,000 Book 2 purchase at the 2023 Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Petticoat will be partnered by apprentice Anna Roper from barrier seven in a field reduced to ten after key scratchings. Petticoat resumes second-up after finishing fifth behind Ice Kool (Zoustar) at Randwick on December 27, her first run since a Highway win on Melbourne Cup Day, and Dodson expects improvement. "There's nothing wrong with that form and I think the run probably did her the world of good," he said. "I was probably just that little bit soft on her having six weeks in between runs, so I think she'll improve off that and if she does show that little bit of improvement, she's got to be in the finish."

Everything right for Accredited in Wyong Town Plate

Trainer Joe Pride believes conditions are finally in Accredited’s (All Too Hard) favour as the consistent gelding lines up in Saturday’s Domeland Wyong Town Plate (1350m). Pride hasn’t shied away from acknowledging Accredited’s disappointing run as a beaten favourite in the Lough Neagh Stakes (Listed, 1300m) at Eagle Farm three weeks ago, but is prepared to forgive the effort, citing unsuitable underfoot conditions. “I took him up to Queensland the other day and the jock [Daniel Moor] got off and said it was way too hard for him,” Pride told Racing NSW. “That’s Eagle Farm at its worst. It’s still disappointing but he does look like he’s got a valid excuse. At his best he’s the horse that ran second in the Hunter. At his worst, he’s got a few chinks in his armour – he doesn’t like hard tracks and he doesn’t like real wet tracks.” A $2.25 chance with TAB on Friday, Accredited has been racing consistently throughout the preparation. He was nailed on the line by stablemate Estadio Mestalla (Galileo Gold) first-up, then finished runner-up in The Hunter (1300m) at Newcastle to another Pride-trained runner in Coal Crusher (Turffontein), before being narrowly beaten behind subsequent Ingham winner Yorkshire (Snitzel) in the Festival Stakes (Gr 3, 1500m). “That’s good form from the late spring period,” Pride said. “He’s got to drag that into summer but I feel like he will. This is the easiest race he’s run in all prep, so hopefully he gets the job done.” Pride has also opted to fit Accredited with winkers for the first time. He will be ridden by Adam Hyeronimus from barrier two.

Hickmott targets wins at Murray Bridge and Gold Coast

Trainer Michael Hickmott is splitting his attention this weekend, eyeing Magic Millions action on the Gold Coast while also chasing success closer to home at Murray Bridge. Cielao (Toronado) seeks a third consecutive win in Saturday’s Sportsbet More Places Handicap (1400m) and jumps from barrier two as the $2.80 favourite. The lightly raced four-year-old has four wins and one placing from eight starts. "She's trained on well since her last start and we train from a farm so these horses stay up for a long time," Hickmott said. "At some stage she's going to find her mark ratings-wise but she's got a three-kilo claim." Apprentice Caitlin Tootel takes the ride, reducing Cielao’s weight to 56 kilograms. The mare was scratched from a January 3 run at Gawler due to an awkward draw. "There's no reason to think that she's not going to be competitive again on Saturday," Hickmott added. Earlier on the card, Hickmott also sends out Carpe Astra (Lord Of The Sky) in the 1100-metre maiden, where she is the $4.40 second favourite. "Carpe Astra won't run further back than second," he said. "Her only danger really is [favourite] Bardigrub." The three-year-old filly finished third on her debut at Murray Bridge on December 20 and sharpened up with a 600-metre jump-out win earlier this week.

I Am Invincible filly impresses at Warwick Farm juvenile trials

John O’Shea and Tom Charlton unveiled Scintillation (I Am Invincible) at the Warwick Farm trials on Friday morning and the well-bred filly made a fine first impression in the opening heat.

Carrying the colours of her breeder Rosemont Stud after passing in at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale, the filly showed good early pace under Zac Lloyd to hold the rail, with $1 million Golden Gift (1100m) placegetter Plagiarism (Written By) applying pressure on her outside.

Plagiarism looked sharp on her return but was unable to overhaul Scintillation, who prevailed by 0.3 lengths to take the 800-metre heat in 47.24s.

Scintillation is the first foal out of Group 3-winning Exceed And Excel (Danehill) mare Minhaaj, who was purchased by Rosemont Stud for $1.8 million at the 2021 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale.

Minhaaj has a yearling filly by Zoustar (Northern Meteor) set to be offered at this year’s Inglis Easter Sale.

The second juvenile heat went the way of Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained filly Agrarian Girl (Tassort), who jumped quickly to lead on the fence before kicking strongly in the straight to score by a length over Cyclone Jaz (Written Tycoon).

A $280,000 Inglis Premier purchase for her trainers and Kestrel Thoroughbreds from the Emirates Park draft, Agrarian Girl is the first foal of stakes winner Liwa (Mulaazem), a half-sister to Group 3 winner Coleman (Pierata) from the family of triple Group 1 winner Canny Lass (Bletchingly).

Loose Jewels out to firm Derby claims at Ellerslie

Loose Jewels (Credit: Race Images)

Kevin and Stephen Gray will use Sunday’s Ellerslie meeting as a measuring stick for the staying potential of promising three-year-old Loose Jewels (Turn Me Loose). The Palmerston North-trained gelding contests the Gingernuts Salver (Listed, 2100m), a key step toward a possible tilt at the New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) in March. Loose Jewels has yet to race beyond a mile in five starts, but the Grays believe he will stay and are keen to see him tested over longer after an unlucky run at Ellerslie last week. “We took a few up the other day and most of them went really well, but this horse was very unlucky up the straight, we couldn’t get a run at all until it was too late,” Stephen Gray said. “We were really rapt with the way he went because it was unknown territory.” Stephen Gray said the gelding had come through the run well and that the return to Ellerslie, over further, should suit. “He shows a lot of promise. It looks a nice race for him, he has had a run around there and he has travelled home really well,” he said. “I know he will stay, he is bred to, and he showed a lot last week. If we can get a change of luck, and he gets the distance, we can make plans then [for the Derby]. If he doesn’t, we can come back to our grade.”

Lucy In The Sky resumes ahead of stakes return

Promising Cambridge Stud-bred filly Lucy In The Sky (Hello Youmzain) will resume at Ellerslie on Sunday as she builds toward higher-level three-year-old targets. The Tony Pike-trained filly will line up in the Elsdon Park 3YO (1200m) before returning to stakes company, having shown strong form as a juvenile with a debut win and later success in the Champagne Stakes (Listed, 1200m). Her two-year-old form has stood up, with key rivals going on to Group-level success, and Pike said the filly is ready to return following a deliberate preparation. “She obviously raced late into her two-year-old season, but she didn’t quite spell as well as we wanted in the winter,” Pike said. “We thought the early three-year-old races would come up a bit quickly for her, so we put her back out in the paddock.” Lucy In The Sky signalled her readiness when placing in an open 1200-metre contest at Avondale last month. “She trialled very well and we’d like to think she’s going to be competitive in some of the better three-year-old races,” Pike said. “She certainly looks like she will be and based on her last barrier trial and the way she’s been working, she is forward enough to resume and run well.” Sunday’s assignment is expected to lead into the Almanzor Trophy (Gr 3, 1200m) on Karaka Millions night. “At this stage, we’ll use this race as a lead-up to the Almanzor Trophy. That’s a short-term goal and then we’ll map out a program from there,” Pike said.

Pitmans prospecting gold in Kumara

Riccarton trainers Michael and Matthew Pitman are prospecting gold in Kumara this weekend, with the father-and-son duo targeting Ocean Light (Ocean Park) and Charbano (Vespa) at Saturday’s Gold Nuggets (1810m). The Pitmans are pleased with Ocean Light heading into the race despite his last start unplaced run in the Kurow Cup (1400m). “The Kurow Cup was a touch short of his best,” Pitman said. “He went there with a view to bring him along for the Nuggets, which is a race that we have targeted with him since his good run during [New Zealand] Cup Week [when runner-up behind race rival Sunset Boulevard over 2000 metres]. He is a real live chance. Hopefully he can go close and then onto bigger targets after. A few of those country cups races down south look ideal for him. He might venture north later in the season, but we will just take it race-by-race with him. We have to spread his races out, he has the odd foot issue, but he is really well at the moment and we think he can go close on Saturday.” Meanwhile, Charbano placed in the Gold Nuggets two years ago and Pitman believes he is well-suited to Kumara. “The weather forecast is for a bit of rain and as long as it doesn’t get too heavy I think he will love the track again,” he said. “We are happy with the horse and hopefully he can give a good account of himself again.”

Waka returns home for second-up test

Impressive debut winner Waka (Hello Youmzain) has returned home to Surrey Farm, near Bulls, ahead of his second-up assignment at Wanganui on Saturday. The three-year-old son of Hello Youmzain (Kodiac) was born and raised at the Rangitikei property of owner-breeders Christopher and Susanna Grace, whose familiar gold and green colours he carried to a dominant debut victory at New Plymouth last month. Trainer Mark Forbes was pleased with the win and said the gelding will continue to improve with time. “He has shown us a lot at home. He has still got a lot to learn so he is only going to get better with racing,” the Cambridge horseman said. “He had a week off after his last start and he seems to be coming up well, I am happy with his track work.” Waka will be ridden by Kelly Myers from barrier five in the La Nuova Dry Cleaners 3YO 1200 (1200m), and Forbes said his charge has travelled down well ahead of his weekend assignment. “He is back where he was born and raised,” Forbes said. “He is out at Surrey Farm, which is only 40 minutes to the racetrack, so it works out perfect. He is in an environment he knows and he seems to have travelled down well, so I am happy.”

HK: Purton rides Beauty Bolt over Invincible Ibis at Sha Tin

Beauty Bolt (Credit: HKJC)

The picture of who lines up in the first leg of the 2025/26 Four-Year-Old Classic Series should come into sharper focus after the Sha Tin meeting on Sunday. Up to a dozen four-year-olds who could earn their place in the starter list for the Hong Kong Classic Mile (1600m) on February 1 are in action on a potentially decisive weekend. All eyes will be on the Class 3 (Restricted) Pak Shek Au Handicap (1600m), which shapes as a Hong Kong Classic Mile trial for several runners and a final tune-up for others. Top-weight in the high-quality four-year-old-only field is Mark Newnham’s in-form gelding Invincible Ibis (Hellbent), who has won three in a row and placed in all six starts to date. Champion jockey Zac Purton has been aboard for each of those wins but has opted to ride Tony Cruz’s equally impressive Beauty Bolt (Night Of Thunder) in the contest. Hugh Bowman will deputise on Invincible Ibis, but Purton was gushing about the development of Beauty Bolt, who has already won over a mile this season. “He’s a lovely horse. He’s got a really good attitude. He just does everything right,” Purton said. “He’s got good speed if you want to use it. He puts himself in a nice spot and has been very consistent. He’s trialled well. He’s going good. He’s a bit of a no-nonsense horse; he just gets out there and does the same thing. He seems like he’s in good form, so I expect him to run well again."

IRE: Rathasker Stud acquire Classic-producing sire Aclaim

Classic-producing sire Aclaim (Acclamation) has relocated to Rathasker Stud after being bought by the Naas operation. The 13-year-old will stand for a fee of €6,500 (approx. AU$11,320). Aclaim's roll of honour at stud is led by the popular Cachet, a winner of the 2022 English 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) and a narrow second in the French equivalent on her following start. She also landed the Nell Gwyn Stakes (Gr 3, 7f) that campaign, having placed in the Fillies' Mile (Gr 1, 1m) and Rockfel Stakes (Gr 2, 7f) the previous year. Aclaim himself landed the Prix de la Foret (Gr 1, 1400m), Park Stakes (Gr 2, 7f) and Challenge Stakes (Gr 2, 7f) for Martyn Meade before retiring to the National Stud for an opening fee of £12,500 in 2018. He stood at the Newmarket stud until 2023 when he moved to Manton Park, where he resided until last year before his transfer to Batsford Stud. A statement by Rathasker Stud said: "We're delighted to announce that Rathasker Stud has purchased 100 per cent of the stallion Aclaim. Aclaim is a Group 1 winner and more importantly a Classic sire. He will be the perfect fit for Rathasker and our clients' broodmare bands. Aclaim is by sire of sires Acclamation out of a Listed-placed half-sister to champion filly Again from the family of champion sire Montjeu. He has all the ingredients to improve his credentials under the stewardship of Rathasker Stud."

US: Gerry Duffy announced as next WinStar Farm chief

Gerry Duffy will become president of WinStar Farm on April 1 as the Troutt family's Kentucky stallion operation plans for the future. Elliott Walden will remain its chief executive officer (CEO) until October 1, when Duffy will take over as both CEO and president. Walden has been a key figure in the growth of WinStar, which has over a dozen sires on its roster including major names such as Constitution (Tapit) and Life Is Good (Into Mischief). A historic site in the heart of the Bluegrass, the farm was bought by Kenny Troutt and Bill Casner in 2000 and developed into a modern powerhouse involved in racing the likes of Triple Crown hero Justify (Scat Daddy) and Breeders' Cup winner Drosselmeyer (Distorted Humor). Irishman Duffy was at WinStar back in 2011 when he spent two years as stallion seasons director. He later served as Godolphin general manager, farm manager at Stonerside and Raceland Farms and most recently as CEO of Modon Equestrian in Abu Dhabi. Troutt expressed his gratitude to Walden as well as his optimism for the years ahead. "I am so grateful for the team at WinStar, and what they have done for my family," he said. "We have had tremendous success over the years and are just getting started. I hope to have the farm in the family for years to come. I want to thank Elliott for his leadership over the last 25 years and look forward to the next chapter."

Studs and farms hit as fires continue to rage in Victoria

Studs and training centres have been evacuated in the Longwood area of Victoria
(Credit: Little Yarra CFA)

Thoroughbreds on major farms and training centres in Victoria have been evacuated as bushfires continued to rage across the state, a crisis the emergency services have described as ‘catastrophic.’

After temperatures soared on Thursday, Friday's equally scorching and windy conditions have contributed to scores of fires breaking out across the state.

The Longwood area, situated between Seymour and Euroa, south of the Hume Freeway, has been severely affected as the fires ripped through the area leading to hundreds of horses, both thoroughbreds and other breeds, needing to be moved to safety in the last 48 hours.

As conditions remain volatile across the region, neighbouring stud farms to those affected, including Sullivan Bloodstock, Swettenham Stud and Noorilim Park have stepped up to assist properties in need, including Michael Christian's Longwood Thoroughbred Farm and the Leneva Park pre-training operation.

After suffering damage to fences and paddocks on Thursday, Leneva Park’s Mick Sharkie said that there was no let up on Friday and structures were now ‘under major threat’ as winds continued to increase.

He said: “Unfortunately Leneva Park has been hit again by fire today as the wind has strengthened. Structures under major threat, CFA doing their best to protect under much duress during this catastrophic event,”

Earlier on Friday, Sharkie described in more detail the dire situation facing many of the industry participants and horse owners across the state of Victoria.

"Our property was safe, so much so that the CFA allowed Channel 7 to come on the property and film with a crew to show the edge of the fire at the back boundary of the property," he told SEN Track.

"They were filming and the wind changed. The fire literally leapt the hill in about two or three minutes and started racing down towards our place and we had to move people at a rate of knots.”

Remarkably, he said the mares and foals on his property escaped unscathed.

“It’s mind-boggling. Not one horse had a scratch on them. I was watching the Channel 7 vision and we saw some of our mares and foals skipping through a burnt out paddock and Sarah [Beaumont, operations manager] said she put them in that paddock, a big wide open paddock and prayed, but it caught fire.

“She said she watched the foals lead the mares around the areas that were already burned. I don’t know, they’re just remarkable animals, they keep themselves safe.”

On Friday afternoon, Lindsay Park’s Will Hayes confirmed in a statement to SEN that all horses, staff and infrastructure were safe after the fires reached his family’s famous Euroa property in Victoria overnight.

He said: “Last night we were hit directly – CFA [Country Fire Authority] are heroes. All horses are okay – they’ve been fed, have water and all necessary veterinary treatments been given. Bunkering down for another scary day and thinking of everyone in the community,”

In response to the crisis, Inglis, the country’s leading sales house, has opened its Oaklands Junction property in Melbourne to house horses affected by bushfires that are raging across Victoria.

Price from Inglis said the decision followed discussions with Racing Victoria amid a surge in calls from concerned horse owners, with capacity available for several hundred horses.

“Yesterday morning, we spoke to Racing Victoria and their welfare department, and they were concerned about the growing number of calls they were receiving from horse owners, around the state, about what may happen,” Price told SENTrack.

“We are obviously very happy to help anybody. Our gates are open, here at Oaklands. We have got stables bedded down, water and staff available to help. Anybody who has horses in danger areas, or are concerned about conditions that may develop, please, just reach out.”

Despite the ongoing threat, Racing Victoria (RV) chief executive Aaron Morrison told SEN Track all properties in the affected area have reported no injuries to horses or industry participants.

He said: "The first priority is that we've checked in on the safety of our participants and horses. So far that's OK. The good news is that there hasn't been any impact from a human or equine perspective in terms of injury.

"There's no critical issues there, which is the best news of all.

"It's been a challenging 24 hours for people right across the industry. Some farms have moved their horses into the Nagambie stud region.

"A lot of those properties have taken on horses from that Longwood region."

Morrison said stewards would continue to monitor the situation while RV would help any participants who needed assistance moving their horses to safety.

He said: "The stewards are reaching out and are in regular contact and there's also a WhatsApp chat group that is running with a lot of individuals in that.”

RV has urged industry participants to remain vigilant as extreme fire conditions persist, with emergency support services available. Assistance with horse welfare can be accessed through the RV Equine Welfare Team on (03) 9258 4258 (Option 4), while emergency agistment options are listed on the Racing Victoria website.

Free counselling support is also available through Stableline (1300 520 122) for industry participants and the TBA Support Line (1300 822 935) for stud staff.

Horse owners requiring agistment can contact James Price at Inglis on 0409 806 595. Emergency updates relating to the racing industry will be communicated via @RVStewards on X, with the broader community encouraged to monitor VicEmergency and call 000 in an emergency.
