A diverse buying bench and a deep catalogue combined to ensure the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale concluded on Friday evening with a decidedly healthy set of figures.

A smaller offering meant turnover was always liable to dip year-on-year, but after four sessions of lively Book 1 trade aggregate sales were just two per cent behind 12 months ago at $202,597,500.

What's On

The average price, underpinned by 15 seven-figure lots, increased by a marginal 0.2 per cent to $273,410, while the median held firm at $200,000. The clearance rate was up close to three points at 85.96 per cent as 741 yearlings found a new home.

“I’m delighted,” said Magic Millions’ managing director Barry Bowditch. “$200 million was a real goal leading in, but to have 40 less horses catalogued, and there were 20-plus more withdrawals, and some significant withdrawals in recent days, it was pleasing to get close to last year’s gross. To increase the clearance rate, which is closing at 86 per cent, and an average that’s up on last year, all the key numbers are reflective of what we believed leading in was a strong catalogue.

We worked hard to get the best buying bench we possibly could. There were a lot of trainers here, a good diverse bunch from a lot of the regional areas

Barry Bowditch

“We worked hard to get the best buying bench we possibly could. There were a lot of trainers here, a good diverse bunch from a lot of the regional areas, be it Western Australia, South Australia, Queensland, the buyers from New Zealand and throughout Asia were fantastic. It was a diverse buying bench but we really made sure we marketed the sale so people could come over here and have a great selection of horses within all budgets.”

He added: “What pleased me was the spread of buyers. There were 45 different buyers who spent a million or more, which is a big spread. That shows there’s a great thirst for yearlings in Australia and a great thirst for the Magic Millions product. It’s been busy from the moment we turned the lights on at 11am on Tuesday.”

Waller and Mulcaster make hay

Chris Waller and Guy Mulcaster topped the buyers’ chart with 14 new recruits costing a combined $8.685 million. The two priciest members of the group were picked up during day four, led by the session-topping Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) colt who fetched $1.5m late in the piece.

The Coolmore-consigned youngster is the first foal out of Vangelic, the second-highest earner sired by Vancouver (Medaglia D’Oro). The dam had plenty of talent on the track, winning the Golden Pendant (Gr 2, 1400m) and reaching the podium in the Surround Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) and Flight Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m).

Vangelic joined the Coolmore broodmare band when purchased by Tom Magnier for $1.5m at the 2023 edition of the Gold Coast National Broodmare Sale.

Lot 708: I Am Invincible ex Qafila filly (Credit: Magic Millions)

“He looked really sharp and he did really well through the prep,” said Mulcaster. “He looks like an early runner and moves beautifully. I think what we paid for him is pretty well on the mark. It’s a helluva lot of money but that’s what they seem to cost. When you get good colts that return to stud then they look cheap, but if they don’t, well, whatever will be will be. He’s a beautiful horse though. The mare ran in a lot of good stakes races and acquitted herself very well.”

Earlier in the day the team bid $1.25m for a well-bred daughter of I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit), also from the Coolmore draft. The filly is out of Qafila, a daughter of Not A Single Doubt (Redoute’s Choice) who landed the South Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) during her time in training.

The dam was sold as part of Shadwell’s Australasian dispersal at Magic Millions in 2021, where Dean Hawthorne signed the $2m docket on behalf of Jonathan Munz of GSA Bloodstock.

“The thing that really got our attention was the fact mum was so versatile,” said Mulcaster. “She ran in the first two-year-old race of the season and ended up winning an Oaks, so we’ve got a few different paths we can take with her.

When you get good colts that return to stud then they look cheap, but if they don’t, well, whatever will be will be

Guy Mulcaster

“We always thought this filly was just an athlete, she’s beautiful and comes off a great farm. We actually thought we were going to struggle to buy her but it’s ended up alright for us. I don’t think we’ll bustle her too much [once in training], we’ll just let her do the talking and see what transpires.”

The seven-figure filly was the team’s second notable signing during the opening stages of the session, having also paid $700,000 for the Anamoe (Street Boss) colt out of Listed scorer Pretty Fast (Not A Single Doubt) just a few lots earlier. “Two starts, two wins for the morning, it’s not too bad!” joked Mulcaster. “It’s a long day ahead though.”

Snitzel finished the sale as the leading sire by aggregate with 29 of his yearlings selling for a combined aggregate of $19.980m. The late Arrowfield stallion’s average (with three or more sold) of $688,966 was only bettered by Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt), whose eight yearlings sold for an average of $822,500.

New heights for Anamoe

Anamoe’s first-crop yearlings have been all the rage on the Gold Coast, and Darley’s young gun passed a significant milestone on Friday when supplying his first seven-figure lot.

Widden Stud’s colt is out of Listed scorer Secret Trail (Denman), making him a half-brother to the Ciaron Maher-trained Spywire (Trapeze Artist), who was last seen claiming last Saturday’s Magic Millions The Syndicate (1100m) on the Gold Coast and will back-up in the Magic Millions Snippets (1200m) on Saturday.

Lot 781: Anamoe ex Secret Trail colt (Credit: Magic Millions)

Maher will also take charge of this youngster after bidding $1.1m, although the stable’s head of bloodstock Will Bourne explained the purchase was inspired by more than simply family ties.

“On paper it might look obvious, but it was the horse in front of you that really took Ciaron’s eye and made him want to buy him,” said Bourne. “Obviously the Spywire factor is there but the fact that he’s a big, strong, imposing colt is the main reason. We’re not being geniuses by finding him at the sale, he was very obvious. He wasn’t missed by anyone. We first saw him at the farm at Widden in late November or early December and he was just a classy animal with a bit of presence about him.”

The Maher stable went back-to-back on lots by Anamoe having also partnered with Mystery Downs to secure a filly from Bell River Thoroughbreds at $600,000 just moments before Spywire’s sibling took to the ring. Bourne explained the team had conducted their due diligence on not only the sire’s yearlings, but the stallion himself.

“Funnily enough we’ve seen a lot of Anamoes we liked and there are a few traits that Ciaron was querying,” said Bourne. “Myself, Ciaron and [Darley’s] Andy Makiv went and checked out Anamoe in between parades in the Hunter Valley. That was the first time we’d seen him in a while and there are a lot of similarities. He’s a heavy horse, he’s big and strong.

“If you’re being critical about this colt, the one negative is how big and heavy he is. But when he moves his athleticism really makes up for it; he doesn’t move sloppy or heavy, he keeps it upright. Those proper Group 1 weight-for-age horses have that strength and that imposing muscle. So although it’s in the back of your mind as an issue, you need to have that to be a proper horse. I’m hoping he’s just that.”

The colt was the most expensive member of the Widden draft, which generated receipts of $11.335m from 34 sold lots. The stud’s owner Antony Thompson reacted to the transaction by saying: “It’s a fabulous result. He was an incredibly popular horse; I think he had 280 inspections here, so he was never in his box. He never turned a hair. The team did a fantastic job with him. He was just a star all week.

We’re not being geniuses by finding him at the sale, he was very obvious. He wasn’t missed by anyone

Will Bourne

“I think Anamoe has been a really well received first-crop sire, but this was the one that looked most like his sire. Obviously Ciaron had perfect timing with Spywire winning last Saturday, so that was ideal to have a half-brother win a million-dollar race last week and running in a big race tomorrow [Saturday]. It was great to see Ciaron win that battle with Mick Price, to get the colt. He’s just a lovely horse. I’m really thrilled and proud of what the team has done this week.”

Lot 911: Anamoe ex Time Check colt (Credit: Magic Millions)

The Maher stable will include four members of Anamoe’s debut crop who were sourced on the Gold Coast, as the team also went to $950,000 for the colt out of Time Check (Sharmdal) from Arrowfield.

The six-figure youngster is a half-brother to the Listed-winning and Group 2-placed Willinga Beast (Snitzel), while Time Check is a sibling to the dam of Group 1 scorers Alizee (Sepoy) and Astern (Medaglia D’Oro).

Bourne said: “I thought it was pulling up at $750,000 but someone else was chasing it. We did want the horse and were happy to go there, but that was probably our last bid. He had a few minor imperfections looking at him straight on but the horse side on, the way he moved, he was just a great colt.”

He added: “If you were nitpicking he wasn’t perfect in front, but we see so often how many horses go to the winners’ stall on Saturdays and there’s no perfect horse front on. That was the only negative, but there were a lot more positives.”

All told Anamoe had 30 lots sell for gross receipts of $14.43m and an average price of $481,000. He stood his first season at stud at a fee of $121,000 (inc GST), an Australian record for a new retiree.

Laurie falls in love with Zoustar filly

Matt Laurie and Willannah Park Bloodstock landed the most expensive offspring of Zoustar (Northern Meteor) at this year’s Gold Coast Yearling Sale when parting with $950,000 for the half-sister to Farnan (Not A Single Doubt), another presented by Widden.

“I just fell in love with her,” said Laurie. “She’s a real athlete. A very clean-bodied filly and a very stylish horse. She’s got a strong page behind her and we want to add to that on the racetrack, but she’s always going to have that pedigree. I thought she could go anywhere from $600,000 to $1 million. We weren’t far off the mark.”

Slade sees value in Vinnie filly

Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott will take charge of the first foal out of the Listed-winning and Group 2-placed Scorched Earth (Nicconi) after reverting to Plan B when the I Am Invincible filly was offered by Yarraman Park.

The team brought the hammer down at $850,000, a figure that Kestrel Thoroughbreds’ Bruce Slade said fell below expectations.

“We had her as one of the top three fillies in the sale,” he said. “We genuinely thought she’d make seven figures but she wasn’t going for that in the ring at $600,000. We’d literally given up on buying her until she was sitting around that mark. We loved her so we said ‘Should we back ourselves to get it done?’ and that’s what we’ve done. We thought she was good value and sometimes you just have to be flexible.”

At this level, if you’re not organised you can’t bid, but thankfully we have the sort of support that means if we see an opportunity we can strike

Bruce Slade

Asked about why the filly had made it so high on the shortlist, Slade said: “Number one, physically. Massive gaskin, huge hip, massive pelvis on her with so much power, a huge girth and great forearms. She moved like the good Vinnies do. Great head. The mare is very believable, she was an absolute flying machine. It’s a fast family.”

Waterhouse, Bott and Kestrel combined on 17 lots across the four sessions, spending $7.035m at an average of $413,825. Despite racking up such big numbers, Slade said the team had endured plenty of reversals of fortune too.

“We’ve been beaten a lot,” he said. “We’re probably five to ten to horses below where we normally are at this stage, but this is what happens in the marketplace. There’s a thousand horses. At this level, if you’re not organised you can’t bid, but thankfully we have the sort of support that means if we see an opportunity we can strike and, between Gai, Adrian, Claudia [Fitzgerald] and the team, we can get it done.”

The Gold Coast Yearling Sale concludes with Book 2, which starts at 12 noon on Sunday.

Sale Snippets

Lot 694: Anamoe ex Pretty Fast by Not A Single Doubt, colt

Price: $700,000
Buyer: Waller Racing/Mulcaster Bloodstock
Vendor: Segenhoe Stud

“He’s a smart colt and a brother to a good trialler last week,” Guy Mulcaster said. “We thought he was one of the most like his sire that we saw.”

Lot 703: Anamoe ex Prophet's Thumb by I Am Invincible, filly

Price: $650,000
Buyer: Kia Ora Stud
Vendor: Bell River Thoroughbreds

“She is one of the most beautiful fillies in the sale,” Kia Ora’s Shane Wright said. “We had her top-rated. Anamoe being a first-season sire, they’re in demand and out of a very quick young mare. She’s so forward, so mature, there’s a lot of quality about her and a very easy action. She was very easy to like. [The Anamoes] look like nice, tough horses going forward.”

Lot 721: Home Affairs ex Real Surreal by Real Saga, filly

Price: $550,000
Buyer: Redgum Racing
Vendor: Cressfield

“She’s a filly that we showed to Paul Johnson, My Gladiola’s owner, she's a very similar: strong, running-looking filly and she’s a November foal so she’s got a lot of developing to do,” John McArdle said. “She’s just a lovely, athletic filly from a fast family so hopefully she’ll be back running early next year. Exactly the same [price as My Gladiola]. I think Johnno was going to drop out until he realised it was the same money as My Gladiola, so hopefully lightning strikes twice." On Home Affairs, he said: “I’ve had to run against a few of them and they were pretty quick so that’s made me want to come and have a look at a few.”

Lot 727: I Am Invincible ex Rendition by Pierro, filly

Price: $575,000
Buyer: Mitchell Bloodstock
Vendor: Westbury Stud

“Lovely filly,” said Bill Mitchell. “Great sire and a fantastic family. Mum could run a bit so we really liked her as a type. Kevin [Maloney] always likes to do stuff with Gerry [Harvey] so everybody is happy. I think the price was around the mark. It is what it is.”

Lot 740: Justify ex Rocket Science by Fastnet Rock, filly

Price: $650,000
Buyer: KPW Bloodstock
Vendor: Newgate Farm

“We more than we thought we’d have to but at the end of the day she’s a lovely filly and Justify is a great stallion,” Kevin “Millie” Walls said. “She’s a lovely moving horse. We were going to stop [bidding] but we pulled out one more. We just buy on type and look at the pedigree later. We like buying yearlings out of young mares. I don’t think she’ll be early. Gai and Adrian were underbidders and they were all over it wanting to train it so we’ll see what happens.”

Lot 753: Stay Inside ex Ruru by So You Think, filly

Price: $750,000
Buyer: MyRacehorse Pty Ltd/Belmont Bloodstock Agency/AWB
Vendor: Sledmere Stud

“Her action, it is a much used phrase, but she had a huge walk,” Damon Gabbedy said. “As loose as a goose. She is a machine. She has the biggest overstep on the complex. Great temperament and just loved her. We had to pay way too much. We didn’t think she’d cost that much coming into it but she was such a standout that there was plenty of competition. [MyRacehorse] has got Apocalyptic so they were keen to get another Extreme Choice and she fitted the bill perfectly. She’ll be an easy sell for them.”

Lot 799: Snitzel ex She’s Ideel by Dundeel, colt

Price: $775,000
Buyer: China Horse Club/Newgate Bloodstock
Vendor: Baramul Stud

“He’s been a great stallion to us, Snitzel,” Henry Field said. “I think we’ve raced five individual Group 1 winners by him for our syndicate. This colt, we thought he had a lot of quality, he’s out of a very high-class mare and even though she was more a middle-distance mare, he was a pretty sharp colt so I wouldn’t write off that he could be early. But you could really see him being a Sires, Champagne-style of a colt that’ll train on at three. He’s a really high-quality individual by a champion sire out of a very well-performed mare. He’s by a great broodmare sire, Dundeel, and the whole team really liked him and we’re pleased to get him.”

Lot 802: Written Tycoon ex Shines Her Light by No Nay Never, colt

Price: $700,000
Buyer: James Harron Bloodstock Colts Partnership/Tony Fung Colts
Vendor: Yulong

“We really loved this horse,” James Harron said. “[He’s got] a lot of quality. The mare has got off to a good start as a broodmare and Written Tycoon is a tremendous stallion. His attitude was just outstanding. He handled the sale really well, even just walking through the ring, he was a really composed horse. We thought he was a must have. For those sorts of horses by champion sires and the pedigree and coming off a wonderful farm, you expect to be thereabouts.”

Lot 826: Diatonic ex Snapdancer by Choisir, filly

Price: $650,000
Buyer: Matt Laurie Racing/Willannah Park Bloodstock
Vendor: Yulong

“I’ve been really impressed with the Diatonic stock here. We bought one earlier [Lot 714] that we really loved and this filly, again, we thought she was a lovely bodied filly,” Matt Laurie said. “The mother was a star and we thought she was every bit of that price. We knew we’d have to pay for a good style like her. On the differences between the Diatonic yearlings he bought, Laurie added: “They’re a little bit different. The first one we bought was out of a Frankel mare and she had a real Oaks look about her. This one is a lot sharper and a bit different in that sense - really taken by both of them.”

Lot 865: I Am Invincible ex Stellar Pauline by Not A Single Doubt, filly

Price: $600,000
Buyer: Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott/Kestrel Thoroughbreds
Vendor: Yarraman Park Stud

“She ticks a lot of boxes,” Adrian Bott said. “By a champion sire out of a very good Not A Single Doubt mare who showed good talent herself and is well-related, so there was a lot to like.”

Lot 867: In The Congo ex Stolen Jade by So You Think, colt

Price: $625,000
Buyer: Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott/Kestrel Thoroughbreds
Vendor: Newgate Farm

“I thought he was the best In The Congo in the sale,” Adrian Bott said. “We have such a strong belief in In The Congo as a stallion and how successful he will be. He was a phenomenal racehorse to have in the stable. What he did in that early part of his two and three-year-old career…he showed remarkable precocity and tremendous natural speed. His win in the Golden Rose was top-class, the way he sustained that speed. We really wanted to come here and target the best In The Congo and we well and truly felt that was him - obviously so did plenty of others in the room because it wasn’t easy to get him.” When asked if In The Congo was stamping his progeny, Bott added: “Well and truly. That colt there is all class, there’s so much quality about him and he had so much presence. The way he continued to handle the preparation and the sale, just the ultimate professional and a really good constitution. There’s so much to like about him.”

Lot 899: Anamoe ex Tessneem by Lonhro, colt

Price: $625,000
Buyer: China Horse Club/Newgate Bloodstock
Vendor: Segenhoe Stud

“First Anamoe we’ve bid on and first Anamoe we’ve bought,” Henry Field said. “He was a super-athletic Anamoe. I saw him at Segenhoe a number of weeks ago and he was very sharp, very fast-looking. We’ve had a lot of the family at Newgate, including Heatherly and Red Resistance and he was very much he was in that mould. I thought he was a very precocious-looking one by the stallion and a no-nonsense horse.” On being raised at Segenhoe, he continued: “It’s always good to buy off our neighbours in Segenhoe, they have a terrific record of raising horses. Certainly we were very high on him and I know the team at Segenhoe and Peter O’Brien thought he was an exceptional horse from a very young age. We were very keen to get him, very happy to get him and we think he’ll be a great horse for the partnership.”

Inglis Digital January Online Sale catalogue revealed

A deep catalogue headlined by elite breeding prospects has been unveiled for the Inglis Digital January Online Sale, with 461 lots offered in Inglis’ first digital auction of the year. Among the standout entries is Street Boss (Street Cry) mare Sliders, a seven-year-old offered with an I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) colt at foot. Sliders is a three-quarter sister to the dam of four-time Group 1-winning champion Broadsiding (Too Darn Hot), making her one of the most attractive broodmare packages available outside the major live sales. Also drawing strong interest is Distinctly Summer (Invader), a winning four-year-old mare and half-sister to Group 1 winner and $2 million-plus earner Kimochi (Brave Smash). She is being offered as a breeding prospect and is set for her first cover later this year. The sale also features shares in a number of high-profile racehorses, including ten per cent interests in Moscatel (Snitzel), Amenable (Lonhro), Farcited (Farnan) and Federer (Dundeel), as well as a five per cent share in Imperial Force (Snitzel). In total, the catalogue comprises 306 racehorses, 72 racehorse shares, 58 broodmares, 15 yearlings, eight two-year-olds and two unbroken horses. Other highlights include unraced or lightly raced stock with elite pedigrees such as Anatomical (Toronado), Lady Cowan (I Am Invincible) and Shyamalan (Snitzel), alongside mares in foal to leading sires like Alabama Express (Redoute's Choice), Nicconi (Bianconi) and Toronado (High Chaparral). Bidding is now open, with the final countdown beginning from 10am on Wednesday. To view the catalogue, click here.

Warwoven a doubt for 2YO Classic

Warwoven’s (Sword Of State) bid for Saturday’s $3 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) is under a cloud after the raging favourite was found to be lame during routine pre-race veterinary inspections on Friday morning. Queensland stewards confirmed the unbeaten colt was lame in the off foreleg following checks conducted ahead of the Gold Coast feature. His stablemate Masvingo (Zoustar), trained by Bjorn Baker and owned in similar interests, was also found to be lame, in the near foreleg. “Both runners will undergo a further examination tomorrow morning prior to scratching time,” Racing Queensland stewards said in a statement on Friday. The withdrawal of Warwoven would significantly reshape betting for the 1200-metre contest. The Sword Of State (Snitzel) colt had been as short as $1.70 before news of his condition emerged. Purchased for $380,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast yearling sales, Warwoven has dominated the market since his impressive win at Eagle Farm on January 3, which followed a commanding debut victory at Randwick on December 20. The current $6 second favourite is the Chris and Corey Munce-trained colt Zip Lock (Hellbent). He is followed in betting by Maribyrnong Plate (Gr 3, 1000m) winner Tornado Valley (Too Darn Hot) at $8 and Shiki (Too Darn Hot) at $11.

Gollan Itchintogo for Gold Coast

Tony Gollan is sticking to a proven path with Itchintogo (Sun City) ahead of Saturday’s $3 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic at the Gold Coast. Six of the past 15 winners of the lucrative race have competed on the seven-day back-up, despite those runners making up just 16 per cent of total starters. Itchintogo fits that profile after a dominant 4.6-length victory in last week’s Gold Nugget (1100m). Purchased for $60,000 at the 2025 Gold Coast March Yearling Sale, the gelding’s recent run was by design, according to Gollan. “I'm really happy with him. It was always the plan, the seven-day backup,” Gollan said. “When he won the Phelan Ready, I just thought he did a bit wrong that day and I wanted to take my time with him and get him back and get him to that race last Saturday, to back up into this. It's been a great formula. Arguably, over the last 15 years, it's the best formula. So many horses have done the seven-day backup. A lot of horses have done it because they had to to get into the race. I've done it by design – I remember Tony McEvoy with Sunlight, he did it by design.” Gollan, who won the race with Skirt The Law (Better Than Ready) in 2023, said Itchintogo had needed more mental development. “I just felt I had to off the Phelan Ready, he just did a bit wrong,” Gollan said. Drawn barrier 11 with Ryan Maloney aboard, Itchintogo is expected to be ridden positively. “It's tricky. I would rather draw one, but he's got good gate speed, he'll put himself on pace,” Gollan said. Itchintogo is rated a $15 chance.

Stockdale hoping for Magic Millions upset

Unit Five (Credit: Racing Photos)

Victorian jockey Tom Stockdale will draw on elite two-year-old race experience when he partners Unit Five (Supido) in Saturday’s $3 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic at the Gold Coast. A longtime supporter of Ciaron Maher, Stockdale said his ride aboard Military Tycoon (Written Tycoon) in last year’s Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) would hold him in good stead. “I’ve never had a ride in this race, but I’ve ridden in the Slipper and they don’t get more high-pressure, as far as tempo goes, than that,” Stockdale told Racing.com. “I’m well-equipped to be up here riding in this race; I’ve competed in the biggest two-year-old turf race in the world.” Unit Five heads north for just his second career start after a comfortable debut win in the Magic Millions VIC 2YO Classic (1100m) at Caulfield Heath on December 20. The Supido (Sebring) colt will jump from barrier nine. “I’ve been presented with nice opportunities over the last year-and-a-half, and I’d have to say that, on form and untapped ability, he’s probably my best ride in a big race, and it’s great,” Stockdale said. “My colt’s done nothing wrong, all you can do is put away a field like he did [on debut].” Stockdale recently travelled north to ride Unit Five in a Gold Coast jump-out. “I wanted a few kinks ironed out in him…I think he has come on a tremendous amount,” he said.

Cup task for Tuff Tu Mus

Trainer David Vandyke admits Tuff Tu Mus (All Too Hard) must lift his game ahead of Saturday’s $2 million Magic Millions Cup (1400m) at the Gold Coast. Vandyke was left underwhelmed by the five-year-old’s performance when resuming in the Recognition Stakes (Listed, 1350m), where he finished four lengths away from Rockribbed (Night Of Thunder) in ninth position. “He had to step up in grade for the Recognition Stakes, but his run was a bit disappointing,” Vandyke told Racing Queensland. “He needs to improve in this grade but it’s a big race." Owned by John Fordham, Tuff Tu Mus has required careful management throughout his career due to anxiety, with Vandyke often taking him to race meetings without starting to build experience. The approach paid dividends last preparation when the gelding won seven consecutive metropolitan races, becoming the trainer’s first horse to achieve the feat. Vandyke confirmed the Magic Millions Cup had always been the target. “He didn’t go out for a break after his last run and he’s trialled strongly since and is fit and well,” he said. Despite holding Tuff Tu Mus in high regard, Vandyke is cautious about future plans. “Although his last run was a bit disappointing, they’re allowed a bad run now and then especially after winning so many straight in town,” Vandyke said. “I’ll get through the Magic Millions Cup first before looking ahead as I’m not sure what level he’ll measure up to.” Tuff Tu Mus has eased to $41 after drawing barrier 21.

Miss Joelene backing up in Subzero

Kelly Schweida will stick to a proven formula with talented mare Miss Joelene (Russian Revolution) when she contests Saturday’s $1 million Magic Millions Subzero (2200m) at the Gold Coast. The five-year-old, a $20,000 purchase from the 2022 National Yearling Sale, has already earned more than $1.4 million and would edge beyond the $2 million mark with victory this weekend. A Group 1 placegetter in the Queensland Oaks (Gr 1, 2200m), Miss Joelene narrowly missed winning the Subzero last year when finishing a 0.3-length after claiming The Wave (1800m) the week prior. Schweida has mirrored that preparation this season, with Miss Joelene again winning The Wave seven days out. “She's had a really good week,” Schweida said. “In each prep she gets a bit better and she's got a pretty good backup record. Drawn barrier 11, which is just standard procedure for us. But couldn't be happier with the way she's bounced back.” Miss Joelene has missed the placings just six times in her past 18 starts, with Schweida confident he has refined her racing pattern. “I just think we're riding her a bit better where she's comfortable,” Schweida said. “Sometimes we used to go a bit early on her or have her a bit close. I think Cejay [Graham] has gelled the right way with her.” She will carry topweight of 60 kilograms, meeting last year’s winner Encoder (Encryption) on identical terms. “The 60 kilos is always a concern against the better horses, but she won with 59 and a half three starts ago, so she can lump the weight,” Schweida said. “I wouldn't drop her.”

Harry’s Yacht bidding to sail on in Gold Reef

Trainer Will Larkin believes Saturday presents the ideal opportunity to test Harry’s Yacht (Harry Angel) at a mile when the gelding lines up in the $175,000 VOBIS Gold Reef (1600m) at Flemington. Prepared in partnership with Leon and Troy Corstens, the four-year-old has enjoyed a strong campaign, recording two Benchmark wins and two minor placings in VOBIS races over 1200 metres. Larkin said the step up in distance has always been part of the plan, with Harry’s Yacht to carry the equal minimum of 54 kilograms this weekend. “It's a distance we've always thought that he'd get to eventually,” Larkin said. “He still just does a little bit wrong in the early stage of his races, but I think if he can find a bum to follow, he'll really be relishing to the line.” Confidence to stretch him out again came after a last-start win over 1400 metres at Geelong. “I think just stepping up to 1400 [metres] was a big plus for him,” Larkin said. “We probably ran one or two too many at the 1200 when you look back on it now. But he's really good, he's come on again.” The inclusion of topweight Jimmy The Bear (Jimmy Creed), rated 106 and set to carry 61 kilograms, has compressed the remainder of the field to the minimum weight, including Harry’s Yacht, who holds the next highest rating of 85. “Getting in with 54 kilos is a bit of a steal,” Larkin said. “It's a box that he's still going to tick, the mile, but I'm pretty confident that he will.” Harry’s Yacht is a $3.10 favourite, with Luke Currie booked to ride.

Payne wary of Buccleuch’s return

Buccleuch (Credit: Racing Photos)

Buccleuch (Peltzer) will resume on Saturday in the Thank You Firefighters Plate (1400m) at Flemington as connections begin a campaign that could culminate in next month’s Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m). The three-year-old enjoyed a standout juvenile season, winning three of five starts highlighted by his Taj Rossi Series Final (Listed, 1600m) success at Flemington last July. However, trainer Patrick Payne admits the gelding has not been overly sharp in his recent work. “Saturday will be interesting. We kept him pretty busy as a two-year-old, so we thought we would step around the early three-year-old season,” Payne, who trains in partnership with his Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m)-winning sister Michelle, told Racing.com. “If we had have brought him back for the spring, I don’t think he would have done that well. He’s had a bit of time off, and I don’t know whether he’s got a little bit complacent, but his trials and work has been only fair. There’s nothing wrong with him, but it’s a sit-and-see run.” While the Australian Guineas on February 28 remains the main objective, Payne stressed flexibility. “That’s the grand plan, to get him to the Guineas, but we’re going to have plans B and C, as well,” he said. “I certainly wouldn’t jump in front of you to back him; I just hope he runs better than expected.” Buccleuch will carry 59.5 kilograms and jump from barrier eight with apprentice Holly Durdon aboard. He is rated a $4.60 second favourite behind Sass Appeal (So You Think).

Cross Tasman eyeing up hat-trick

Saturday’s final race at Rosehill shapes as the toughest test and a potential springboard to richer targets for Cross Tasman (Super Seth). The four-year-old gelding is chasing a hat-trick of wins when he steps out in Saturday metropolitan grade for the first time, under the care of John O'Shea and Tom Charlton. Charlton believes the TAB Handicap (1500m) could help define the gelding’s ceiling. “If everything goes to plan, he might be one we'll try and qualify for The Big Dance,” Charlton said. “There could be a couple of options for him, country races to try and get them in, and then we can maybe set our sights on the spring.” Cross Tasman won just once in four starts during his initial campaign but has returned in career-best form, claiming a 1250-metre Benchmark 64 on the Kensington track at Randwick before backing it up with a Benchmark 72 (1300m) victory at Randwick on Boxing Day. The NZ$260,000 Karaka purchase was scratched from Wyong last Saturday due to extreme heat and now faces likely wet conditions, with rain forecast into race day. That may suit, with his maiden win coming on a Soft 7 surface and his dam Daffodil (No Excuse Needed) winning two of her three Group 1 races on Soft-rated ground, including the ATC Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m). “We thought he'd definitely get through the grades, he's a very laid-back, unassuming horse at home,” Charlton said. “He doesn't give too much away, which is not a bad thing.” Cross Tasman has drawn barrier four as the $1.95 favourite and will be ridden by Dylan Gibbons.

Secondary option for Princess Que

A change of plans could work in favour of trainer Simon Zahra, who will instead target Murray Bridge with Princess Que (Toronado) after last weekend’s intended trip to Wyong was abandoned due to the Victorian bushfires. Zahra had been looking forward to saddling his first runner at Wyong but logistical issues forced a rethink, with the mare now lining up in Saturday’s Thomas Farms Handicap (1200m). “We couldn't go to Wyong because the roadblocks with the fires meant that it would have added another four hours to the trip,” Zahra said. “This is our next option and hopefully she gets the job done.” Princess Que has been a consistent performer, recording three wins and three placings from her ten career starts. With a win and a placing first-up, the four-year-old arrives at Murray Bridge in good order and sits just off the top of betting at $3.20. She is narrowly behind Angel Torque (Harry Angel), trained by Dan Clarken and Oopy MacGillivray, who heads the market at $3.10. “She was favourite last week and it was quite a strong race,” Zahra said. “She looked well in and goes very well fresh.” Zahra believes barrier one will be an advantage for the naturally fast mare.

Mertens suffers injury on farm

Group 1-winning jockey Beau Mertens will not ride this weekend after being involved in what he described as a freak accident on his farm. Mertens released a statement on Friday confirming he required emergency surgery after suffering facial lacerations and has been advised to stand down from riding duties. “Due to being put under anaesthesia and on medical advice, I will not be fulfilling any riding engagements this weekend,” Mertens said.
“I'm grateful to the medical team for their quick care and would like to thank everyone for the messages and support. I'll now focus on recovering this weekend.”

Nickalls chasing Oaks dream with promising filly

Stephen Nickalls had the ride of a lifetime several years ago with his quality filly Llanacord (Contributer), and now he is hoping he has found another. The daughter of Contributer (High Chaparral) won the 2021 edition of the Lowland Stakes (Gr 2, 2100m) before placing in the New Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) at Trentham. She then crossed the Tasman where she was tenth in the Australasian Oaks (Gr 1, 2000m) before a runner-up finish in the SA Fillies Classic (Gr 3, 2500m). Five years on, Nickalls believes he has a filly that fits the same mould in Iffigive, another daughter of Contributer who has placed in her last two starts. “This filly has always reminded us a lot of Llanacord,” Nickalls said. “The fact that she has the same ownership adds to the similarities. She has always been very similar and it looks like she will be a nice progressive three-year-old.” Iffigive will be tested at stakes level for the first time on Saturday when she heads to Trentham to contest the Desert Gold Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m), and off her recent performances Nickalls is hopeful of a bold showing. “She had two super placings. She ran second at Woodville behind Empirical and it was a really tough run,” the Rangiotu trainer said. “She knocked a knee after that so had a fortnight in the paddock, which might have been a blessing as it gave her some time to mature and develop. I am very excited and looking forward to the weekend.”

Track no concern for Patterson’s stakes hopes

The Dirty Dee (Credit: Race Images)

Group 1 hope The Dirty Dee (Derryn) will spearhead a strong team at Trentham on Saturday for Robbie Patterson and unlike a number of trainers, he’s unconcerned about the prospect of rain-affected ground. The New Plymouth-based trainer is bullish about the chances of the filly in the Desert Gold Stakes as she works her way toward the New Zealand Oaks at Ellerslie. “A wet track definitely won’t worry her, and I gave her a good jump-out on Monday and she found the line really strongly and pulled up well,” Patterson said. The Dirty Dee was an impressive debut winner on her home track before she finished runner-up at Trentham in early December. “She was just unlucky and got a knock that cost her winning and she’s done nothing wrong, that’s for sure,” Patterson said. “She’ll go to Te Rapa and then on to the Oaks; I may even trial her right-handed which would be ideal ahead of Ellerslie,” Patterson said. Craig Grylls will be aboard The Dirty Dee and will also take the reins on the stable’s other black-type contenders on Saturday, One Bold Cat (The Bold One) in the Trentham Stakes (Gr 3, 2100m) and Belles Beau (Iffraaj) in the Thorndon Mile (Gr 2, 1600m). One Bold Cat bounced back to his best with victory under 58 kilograms in the Marton Cup (Listed, 2200m) last time out. “He was really good last time and no reason why he can’t carry on with it,” Patterson said. “He’s done super since and he’s a happy horse.” Belles Beau was last seen running second in the Manawatu Challenge Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m). “He got home well and he’s screaming out for a mile, the ground will be perfect, so he’ll have everything in his favour if he gets a bit of luck,” Patterson said.

Tyler reinforcements arrive in the north

Freddie Time (Time Test) has been Kelvin Tyler’s sole representative in the north over the last couple of months, but the Southland trainer has sent up some reinforcements as he looks to plunder the spoils on offer at Trentham in the coming weeks. Stakes performer Prince Alby (Sacred Falls) has returned north to target the Wellington Cup (Gr 3, 3200m) at the end of the month, while Indie Ardie (Ardrossan) and Sight To See (Time Test) are looking to cement their place in the $350,000 Remutaka Classic (2100m) at the same meeting. The trio arrived at Otaki last week and Tyler has been pleased with how they have settled in. “I couldn’t be happier,” he said. “They’ve been up here for eight or nine days and have just settled in as they normally do up here at Howie and Lorraine’s [Mathews].” They have joined Freddie Time, who has been in great form for Tyler in the Central Districts this season, winning at Otaki before placing in the Manawatu Cup (Gr 3, 2300m) and Marton Cup. He will return to the Upper Hutt track on Saturday to contest the Trentham Stakes before he likely heads for a well-deserved freshen-up. “He has been really good and I thought his gallop on Tuesday morning was outstanding,” Tyler said. “A wet track won’t bother him. He is only a young horse, being four, but he is thriving at the moment and I am sure he will go another good race. There’s a good chance he will have a freshen-up after this for two or three weeks and maybe get him back in the autumn for some nice races.” He will be joined in Saturday’s contest by Prince Alby, who ran fourth in the New Zealand Cup (Gr 3, 3200m) at Riccarton in November before finishing last over 2200 metres at Wingatui on Boxing Day.

HK: Size rolls out reinforcements as he eyes momentum shift at Sha Tin

John Size (Credit: HKJC)

Champion trainer John Size is ramping up his bid for a 14th title this weekend as he prepares to send a squad of 13 runners to the 11-race meeting at Sha Tin. Size’s contingent for Sunday’s 15th National Games Hong Kong Medallists Raceday equals his largest of the season as he seeks to close the gap on the premiership leaders. His 17 wins so far place him in eighth position, 15 wins behind leader Mark Newnham as the 2025/26 season approaches the midway point. It was a very merry festive period for the 13-time Hong Kong champion as he registered six wins in four meetings, but he has now failed to find a winner among his last 19 runners. Four-year-old Flow Water Flow (Proisir) has been knocking on the door during his six months in Hong Kong, but has found one too good in each of his three outings this term. Size believes his time is nearing. “The horses that have beaten him have done well on the day,” Size said of the gelding, who competes in the Class 4 Triathlon 1600m Handicap. “He’s due – he just needs a bit of luck. He goes up to 1600 [metres], which gives him more time to get home. He’s been a nice horse – so with that consistency, I think he’s going to win a few.” Fellow four-year-old Juneau Pride (Pride Of Dubai) won three times and placed in all nine starts during a remarkable debut campaign in Hong Kong that saw him climb to a mark of 80 ahead of his four-year-old season. However, he has failed to reach those heady heights so far this term, finishing outside the placings in each of his three runs. “He did a fair bit last season and got to a mark of around 80,” Size said. “To get back to that form sometimes takes a couple of races, and I think he’s nearly there. I think he’ll run better on the weekend."
