Some neat pieces of numerical symmetry surround Hallmark Stud’s presence at next week’s Karaka Yearling Sale.

As New Zealand’s most famous auction celebrates its 100th edition, Hallmark raises its own half century, with its 50th successive draft following its first, at the old National Sale, in 1977.

What's On

And how fitting that Hallmark is able to kick off the entire sale with Lot 1, a well bred colt by Harry Angel (Dark Angel) whose second dam was three-time Melbourne stakes winner Dama De Noche (Snippets).

While presenting the first lot of a sale can be something of a poisoned chalice, with many potential buyers watching and waiting in those early stages, the Hallmark team will be delighted to take “the honour” in what is a landmark sale for them.

Not that they’d stopped to think about it, but Mark Baker - who owns the stud south of Auckland with his father Denny - was chuffed when his chat with ANZ News this week turned up the fact that this would be their 50th straight draft at New Zealand’s most important sale.

“The first thing I’d say is - I don’t know where the time went,” Baker said. “But you look back and you realise we’ve had some great times, though there’s highs and lows, like everything with horses.

“But it seems like yesterday that I went down there with my father with our first draft back in the 1970s. Time goes pretty quick.

“It’s a nice milestone, though it’s not something you’d think about that much. But like all of us Kiwi breeders, we’re small, we’ve all got each other’s backs, and we’re just proud to be a Kiwi breeder given what we produce in this country.”

Hallmark can boast some glowing history, with its recent highlight being the breeding of Prowess (Proisir), the dual Group 1 winner whose sister is in the Bakers’ draft next week, as Lot 387.

In tandem with close associate, Taranaki-based breeder Trevor Hurley, Hallmark also bred the elite-level winning half-siblings Katie Lee (Pins) and Banchee (Oratorio). They were New Zealand’s Champion 3YO and 2YO in 2009-10, making their three-time stakes-winning dam Miss Jessie Jay (Spectacularphantom) the only Kiwi broodmare to have left both such champions in the same year.

Katie Lee, in turn the only filly to have won New Zealand’s double of the Two Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) and One Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m), is the second dam of Hallmark’s Lot 93 on Sunday, a colt by Super Seth (Dundeel).

Other graduates from the farm include top-tier winners Humidor (Teofilo), Bonny Lass (Super Easy) and Wyndspelle (Iffraaj), along with a host of other black-type victors.

Fittingly, Baker rates Hallmark’s 50th straight New Zealand draft as one of its finest of the past decade, with ten varied yearlings promising “something for everyone”.

Hallmark Stud

It’s been forged out of a recent change of strategy at the 260-acre farm.

After phasing out their breaking business more than a decade ago, Hallmark also stopped standing stallions four years back, with Super Easy (Darci Brahma) their last, as they concentrated on owning stallion shares.

And two years ago, the stud stopped foaling down, sending its mares to give birth at nearby Haunui Farm instead.

“Everything’s just a bit more streamlined, and more efficient now,” Baker said.

“We stood three or four stallions for a long time but we stopped that. It was mainly just out of economics. New Zealand’s broodmare band shrunk from 6,500 to 2,500, and it became hard to fill stallions.

“Also, when you stand a stallion, you’ve got to support them, so you send all your mares to them. But if the stallion turns out to be no good, you’ve tainted your band for a couple of years.

Lot 1: Harry Angel ex Name Of The Rose colt

“So we enjoy being able to utilise other stallions, concentrating on quality not quantity, which not only helps the overheads but is more streamlined.

“We also used to foal down here, but we’ve stopped that now.

“We still do a lot of trade horses - foals to yearlings, yearlings to two-year-olds.

“So there’s been a few changes in the past ten years but it’s going well. You need luck like everything in racing. With an ounce of that you manage to keep your head above water.”

As for Hallmark’s four colt, six filly draft next week, Baker is excited about a selection of yearlings he feels can satisfy most wish lists.

“There’s some very sharp horses there that look very precocious that could be out early,” he said. “There’s some lovely colts who’d be perfect trade horses, for the trial market or ready to run.

“There’s fillies with broodmare residual value, with great pages. A couple look particularly sharp, and a couple look more like Classic distance horses.

“So it’s a really nice cross-section on type and on pedigree as well. We’re really happy with how they’ve shaped up and come to hand.”

While their first yearling kicks off the sale, if there’s one stand-out in Hallmark’s draft it’s their last one, the aforementioned Lot 387.

She’s a sister to the outstanding Prowess, winner of six stakes races and five on the bounce including the back-to-back elite double of Ellerslie’s New Zealand Stakes (Gr 1, 2050m) and the Vinery Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at Rosehill.

Dam Donna Marie (Don Eduardo) - a daughter of Group 2-winning mare Scarlet Runner (Kingdom Bay) - has also thrown the stakes-placed Ajay Tee (Foxwedge) among her six foals to race.

“This one is more like Prowess than any of the dam’s other foals,” Baker said.

Lot 387: Proisir ex Donna Marie filly

“The others have been a bit sharper looking, but with this one there’s a bit of daylight under her. She’s got size and scope and quality, and she looks like she’ll be that middle distance, Oaks type of filly.

“She’s very straightforward. She eats, sleeps and takes everything in her stride. She’s a late October foal but she’s grown out well so far.”

Lot 93 is a son of Waikato Stud’s burgeoning sire Super Seth (Dundeel) who has those two Hallmark stars - Miss Jessie Jay and Katie Lee (Pins) - as his second and third dams, and is the second foal of the unraced Rozala (Almanzor).

Another of Katie Lee’s daughters, Legramor (Commands) is the dam of Sydney Group 3 winner Public Attention (Written Tycoon).

“This is one of the nicest horses we’ve bred for a while,” said Baker, who sold Rozala as a yearling before buying her back to breed from.

“He’s well balanced, has a great girth, great rein, and is correct. He’s an incredible mover, he’s got a great action, and he uses himself extremely well. He’s got an incredible brain, is a very kind horse, and takes everything in his stride.”

Hallmark Stud

Lot 339 comes from Hallmark’s line in pinhooking. The colt is by the much discussed Home Affairs (I Am Invincible). Coolmore’s buzz sire is out of the blocks well with four winners from his first 14 runners, including New Zealand black-type victor Kinnaird, who took Ellerslie’s Eclipse Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) earlier this month.

This first foal out of the stakes-placed Celtic Glory (Toronado) was bought as a weanling by Hallmark at last year’s Inglis Great Southern sale for $160,000.

“He’s muscle on muscle and looks very sharp,” Baker said. “He’s got a massive girth, a huge forearm, a big hip, and uses himself well. You wouldn’t be surprised to see him go early. And I think Toronado should make a good broodmare sire.”

Lot 1 is an ideal type to begin an auction, Baker said. Hallmark’s colt is by Darley’s highly successful Australian shuttler Harry Angel out of a city-placed half-sister to dual black-type victor Nocturnelle (Elusive Quality), dam of Group 3 winner Dracarys (Snitzel).

“He’s a beauty,” Baker said. “He’s by a hot stallion in Harry Angel, and he’s a lovely horse to kick the sale off with.

Lot 93: Super Seth ex Rozala colt

“He’s very similar to our Home Affairs colt actually. He’s got a big powerful hind quarter, a great girth and good rein, a good head and is very correct - everything everyone wants to see.”

Lot 251 is what Baker calls a “really classy” filly by Ardrossan (Redoute’s Choice).

“She’s a lovely, medium-sized, well-balanced filly, with a beautiful head and a great brain. She’s very laid back,” Baker said. “She’s beautifully proportioned, and correct, and floats across the ground. She’s all quality.”

The filly is a half-sister to New Zealand Group 2 and Listed winner Robusto (Zed), a mare who’s not to be confused with Australia’s Group 2 and Listed winning Robusto (Churchill), the gelding trained by expat Kiwi Bjorn Baker who - surprisingly given the NZ gene pool - is no relation to the Hallmark Bakers.

“Bjorn still calls me ‘Brother Baker’ though, so we’ll run with that, given the way he’s going,” Mark said with a smile. “We’ve sold a few horses to him over the years. I’d love to sell him some more, looking at the form he’s been in.”

Sliders tops January Online Sale at $400,000

Sliders (Credit: Inglis)

The first Inglis Digital auction of 2026 was topped by well related mare Sliders (Street Boss) – with an I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) colt foal at foot – who sold for $400,000.

Offered by Coolmore on behalf of a client, Sliders sold to a delighted Ben Kwok, who has dreams of a visit to Darley stallion Too Darn Hot (Dubawi) with the mare.

“I’m hoping he returns to Australia this year and I can get her to him but if not, I’ll find another good stallion,’’ Kwok said.

“She will stay in Australia anyway and I’ll probably retain the colt to race.’’

Coolmore’s Brian McGuire was pleased with Wednesday’s outcome. “Sliders is from an outstanding family and her I Am Invincible colt foal is a lovely type so she deserved to make that sort of money,” McGuire said.

The sale's second-top lot was the three-year-old Portofino (I Am Invincible), who was offered by Newgate Farm and sold for $105,000.

Portofino sold to Tamworth-based Luke Berger - a former trainer and now runs an ownership management groups enterprise - who will send his new purchase to Mudgee-based trainer Mack Griffith.

“He fits our model, we look for well bred horses with good form and then we place them with trainers with high strike rates and put them in a weaker jurisdiction,’’ Berger said.

The Inglis Digital January Sale grossed $3,391,400. Entries are now open for the Inglis Digital February (Early) Online Sale, which will run from January 30 to February 4.

Among the confirmed early entries is a breeding right in first season sire Anamoe (Street Boss). A nine-time Group 1 winner, Anamoe’s first yearlings averaged $469,000 on the Gold Coast last week, with 31 of his progeny selling for a gross of $14.5 million – including a seven-figure yearling among his first sale offering.

Entries for the February (Early) Sale close at midnight on January 28. To enter click here.

Ceolwulf scratched from Warwick Farm trials

Multiple Group 1 winner Ceolwulf (Tavistock) will miss the Warwick Farm barrier trials after suffering a minor setback in his stable. Joe Pride confirmed the gelding was treated for a graze to his leg after appearing to become cast in his box, prompting his withdrawal from a scheduled 900-metre heat on Thursday. The trial was set to be Ceolwulf’s first public appearance of the year ahead of a planned return in the Apollo Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Randwick on February 14. “He must have gotten cast. He just has a graze, but I’ll scratch him from the trial tomorrow,” Pride said. “He’ll be fine. As long as I can get it right pretty quickly, we’ll get to our first-up run.” Ceolwulf rounded out a strong spring with successive elite-level victories in the King Charles III Stakes (Gr 1, 600m) at Randwick and the Champions Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) at Flemington, and is being prepared for the major middle-distance weight-for-age races this autumn. Pride admitted to disappointment that Ceolwulf will not get the chance to renew his rivalry with Via Sistina (Fastnet Rock) following her retirement. “It’s sad he doesn’t get a chance to compete against her again because he should have beaten her first-up last time [in the Winx Stakes] when Chad [Schofield], by his own admission, put in a bad ride,” Pride said. “There looks like a bit of a changing of the guard in the weight-for-age races, so I’m hoping there is a little lull there and a moment for him to really shine.” Stablemate and Spring Champion Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) winner Attica (Lonhro) will trial for a second time at Warwick Farm on Thursday as he builds towards a three-year-old campaign, beginning in the Hobartville Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Rosehill on February 21.

Ford backing Whinchat in Carrington

Quirky but talented gelding Whinchat (Russian Revolution) will chase an eighth career win in Saturday’s Carrington Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at Randwick, with regular rider Jay Ford confident the six-year-old is hitting peak form. Ford has partnered the David Pfieffer-trained gelding in all seven of his wins, including a last-start all-the-way victory at Wyong in a Benchmark 100 (1350m), his first success since March 2024. “I’ve been with him from day dot,” Ford said. “He’s been a long process, he’s always shown that ability, but he’s just had his quirks and whatnot. That was the first time he’d won in two years, he’s very talented, but he’s got a mind of his own and some days you see the best of him and other days you don’t. He got it all down pat really well the other day, so hopefully he can execute like that again, and the Carrington looks a lovely race for him.” Whinchat has placed once from four black-type starts, narrowly beaten in the Luskin Star Stakes (Listed, 1300m) at Scone in May last year, and Ford said managing the length of his preparation is key. “He’s not a horse who can sustain long preparations,” the trainer explained. “Once he gets into third-up and fourth- up, that’s when sort of we start having problems with him barrier-wise. From all reports, Dave said he’s pulled through his win the other day very well. He’s going to have a break, I’m pretty sure, after his next start. There’s not a lot around for him, so Saturday will be his last run for the preparation.” Whinchat has drawn barrier 12 of 13 in the $200,000 Carrington Stakes and has opened a $3.60 favourite.

Maher duo set for Australia stakes

Ciaron Maher will be represented by promising colt Jimmy Recard (I Am Invincible) and stablemate Nadal (Xtravagant) when the Australia Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) is staged away from Moonee Valley for the first time, with Friday night’s edition of the sprint transferred to Pakenham due to The Valley’s ongoing redevelopment. The pair face a stiff task against Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m) winner War Machine (Harry Angel), the $1.65 favourite following acceptances. Jimmy Recard posted a Vain Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) victory at Caulfield in August before measuring up against the best of his generation during the spring. While this marks his first-up return against older horses, Maher’s assistant trainer Jack Turnbull is confident in the colt’s ability. “Jimmy’s good,” Turnbull said. “He’s had two jump- outs and we’ve been happy with both of them. He’s come through them fine and he’s a big lad with plenty of racing to come. Ultimately we’ll follow the weather that is around and whether that is in Adelaide or Sydney to look at something like The Galaxy, that would be fantastic. For the moment to kick him off, he’s ready to go, and goes well first-up.” Stablemate Nadal resumes after finishing second to fellow Australia Stakes contender Hedged (Capitalist) in the Christmas Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Sandown last month. The five-year-old is still building following a late 2025 preparation after bone chip surgery kept him sidelined for much of the year. “He has taken a bit longer to come to his best,” Turnbull said. “It was a bit of a shame that we got so far back in running last start because his late work was quite good. The threat through the whole preparation is that he could regress in his action after the surgery but he would be a peak fitness and hopefully the likes of War Machine need the run.”

Begg stable set for big weekend

Grahame Begg will saddle key runners across a busy Australia Day weekend, balancing recovery hopes for an established performer with debut anticipation around a highly regarded juvenile. Maharba (Pride Of Dubai) lines up in Friday night’s Australia Stakes looking to rebound from a below-par first-up effort, with Begg pointing to conditions as a key factor. “Hopefully he can turn things around,” the trainer told Racing.com. “We were pretty disappointed the other day. The only excuse I can make is that the horses down on the inside all ran the same. Hedged, Lim’s Kosciuszko and Maharba drew the inside gates and didn’t fire. Three of the first four home drew the outside gates; it was a very strange day with the wind. I’m hoping he will bounce back but I must admit I wasn’t expecting War Machine to be there. Our horse is good and we are very happy with him.” On Saturday, Begg will also unveil Jadzia (Ole Kirk) in the Blue Diamond Fillies Preview (Gr 3, 1000m) at Caulfield. The youngster firmed sharply in Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) betting following an impressive Sandown jump-out. “She seems a nice progressive filly on what we’ve asked her to do, so far,” Begg said. “She couldn’t have done any more than what she did in the Sandown trial. It was really good to be able to take her away to a different venue, get away from Cranbourne, and give her some exposure away from there. The surface was great there, we were very happy. It was a very nice jump-out. We’re up against horses who have had the experience and they are always a bit of a stumbling block.”

Shinn still months away from return

Blake Shinn has conceded his return from a broken leg is still months away, admitting to a touch of “delusional optimism” in hoping to be back for the autumn carnival. Speaking on The Verdict podcast, Shinn revealed he is targeting April as a tentative return, having accepted his recovery will take longer than first anticipated following the Melbourne Cup Day fall. “I’ve come to the reality, I’m going to be out a bit longer than I wanted,” Shinn said on Wednesday. “I’ve just got to accept that and focus on getting myself back.” Despite still being unable to put his full weight through the leg, Shinn said he remains positive about his rehabilitation. “It could be a lot worse,” he said. “That’s the way I think.” Shinn broke both his left tibia and fibula in a heavy fall at Flemington on November 4. Fully conscious throughout, he was caught in a chain-reaction incident when She’s Got Pizzazz (Zoustar) stumbled after being tightened late in the race. “It just happened in an instant,” Shinn said. “I was down on the ground, rolling and thinking I’m going to be ok, here. But then the horse who was last couldn’t avoid me and ran over me. That’s actually what broke the leg and caused all the trouble.”

Well Written gets ideal gate as favourites fare well in Karaka Millions barrier draws

Well Written (Credit: Race Images)

Well Written (Written Tycoon) will jump from barrier three when she tries to stretch her unbeaten record to five in Saturday’s Karaka Millions 3YO (RL, 1600m) at Ellerslie.

The Stephen Marsh-trained filly has become the increasingly hot favourite for Saturday’s $1.5 million race while sweeping all before her, culminating in another easy win in the New Zealand 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) in November to bring her odds into $1.50.

She also jumped from gate three in that race and when she returned from a let-up for a fourth straight win in the Auckland Guineas (Gr 2, 1400m) on Boxing Day, the scene was set for her biggest assignment.

“I said to Dylan [Johnson, agent] that I wanted somewhere between one and five, and he pulled out three,” Marsh said. “A filly like her, she jumps and puts herself there, so yes, we’re happy.

“Everything has gone to plan, I was very happy with how she worked at Ellerslie yesterday, and now we just have to tick her over until Saturday.”

Well Written did not budge from her $1.50 pre-draw odds, nor did $5 second favourite La Dorada (Super Seth) when she came up with gate five.

They remained the only runners in single digits in the betting, with third favourite Affirmative Action (Yes Yes Yes) easing to $13 (from $10) after drawing gate ten.

That failed to deter his trainer Pam Gerard, who holds the highest numerical factor with Romanoff (Belardo), who narrowly downed Affirmative Action in the New Zealand 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m), and lightly raced winner Now Not Never (Shocking) also in the Karaka Millions 3YO field.

“That draw doesn’t worry me with Affirmative Action as he’s a far better horse coming off the pace,” Gerard said.

“I’ve been watching him and Romanoff making all the right progress lately and they’ll go to Ellerslie in very good shape.

“Now Not Never has had just the two starts and he won the second of them. He’s well and I’m happy to give him his chance.”

The draw also played out well for leading candidates in the Karaka Millions 2YO (RL, 1200m), with $4 pre-draw favourite Kinnaird (Home Affairs) staying firm after being allocated gate two and Victorian filly Torture (Sword Of State) likewise on $5 from gate five.

Midnight Dart owners set to light up Karaka Millions night

Bargain buy Midnight Dart (Derryn) will be out to get the party started for his throng of next generation owners when the Lisa Latta-trained juvenile contests the $1 million Karaka Millions 2YO at Ellerslie on Saturday. The youngster was bought by Latta’s son Josh Herd for $20,000 from the Grangewilliam Stud draft at Karaka last year and was one of the first horses qualified for the Ellerslie feature when winning on debut at Trentham. Midnight Dart subsequently finished fourth to Karaka Millions favourite Kinnaird and enters the lucrative sales race as a $35 chance at his third start. Latta has already made her mark on the Karaka Millions stage, winning New Zealand’s richest two-year-old race with Fort Lincoln (Charge Forward) in 2011 and finishing second with Showmeyamoneyhoney (Showcasing) in 2016. “I went to university down in Otago, and there are quite a few mates of mine from Uni that are in him,” Herd said. “Some of them are from as far north as Kerikeri and as far south as Invercargill, not to mention mates abroad in America and another friend at college in Amsterdam. There’s something like 75 owners in the horse and 45 to 50 of them would be under 30. You never really know until you go to the races with two-year-olds as it's always a bit of a lottery when they're having their first start. But we were pleased with what he had shown us and it definitely wasn't a surprise to see him win on debut. It’s a thrill just to have a runner in the race and I’m sure it will be a good night, win, lose or draw.”

HK: Romantic Warrior ready for Triple Crown campaign

Romantic Warrior (Acclamation) worked smoothly through his final piece of serious trackwork on Tuesday morning under the cover of darkness at Sha Tin in preparation for Sunday afternoon’s Stewards’ Cup (Gr 1, 1600m). Gearing up for the Triple Crown’s first leg at Sha Tin, Romantic Warrior clocked an untested 1m 16.6s under Hugh Bowman on the turf course alongside stablemate Romantic Thor (Justify), and it was much to the satisfaction of his trainer Danny Shum. “He’s good. He’s done his final gallop on the turf. Hugh Bowman rode him and he gave me a very positive report. He’s happy with him. Of course, Voyage Bubble is a very strong competitor over the mile, but Romantic Warrior will run well,” Shum said. Romantic Warrior returns to 1600 metres for the first time since winning the 2024 Yasuda Kinen (Gr 1, 1600m). The Hong Kong International Sale graduate has raced over a mile three times in his career, winning the 2022 Hong Kong Classic Mile (Listed, 1600m) before his second to Golden Sixty (Medaglia D’Oro) in the 2023 Stewards’ Cup. The now eight-year-old is set to make his third start this term after an injury-interrupted 2024/25 during which he raced in the Middle East and won the Jebel Hatta (Gr 1, 1800m) before two seconds in the Saudi Cup (Gr 1, 1800m ) and Dubai Turf (Gr 1, 1800m). “Whatever he does is a bonus already. I just want him to try his best, but most importantly – he is happy, healthy and comfortable. He is very well after December and everything is under control," Shum said.

Preparing to chase Stewards’ Cup (Gr 1, 1600m) glory with champion Romantic Warrior (Acclamation) on Sunday, Danny Shum clocked up his 900th Hong Kong win as a trainer at Sha Tin’s all-dirt meeting on Wednesday night.

Shum, 65, is the seventh-most prolific trainer in Hong Kong racing history behind John Moore (1,735), John Size (1,632), Tony Cruz (1,583) Caspar Fownes (1,196), Ricky Yiu (1,083) and Francis Lui (1,003) after combining with Zac Purton for victories on Hong Kong International Sale graduate Forever Folks (Tavistock) in the Class 4 Po Shek Wu Handicap (1800m) and Blazing Wind (Deep Field) in the Class 3 Shui Chuen O Handicap (1200m).

“I always say, the first ten years of my training, I was not that good, but the last ten years I'm doing much better because I'm more concentrated on my job," said Shum, the mastermind behind Romantic Warrior’s record-breaking career.

“You can see the last ten years, my results tell you a lot and I've had a lot of good horses to help, too.”

The winner of 11 Group 1s and a world record HK$240,105,697 (approx. AU$45.47 million) in prize-money, Romantic Warrior will clash with Voyage Bubble (Deep Field) and My Wish (Flying Artie) in the Stewards’ Cup, the first leg of the Triple Crown.

New Forest (Justify) continued an impressive rise with a clinical victory in the Class 2 Tin Chak Handicap (1650m) as Mark Newnham extended his lead in the 2025/26 Hong Kong trainers’ championship and Andrea Atzeni posted a treble.

The Justify (Scat Daddy) gelding led all the way for Atzeni to defeat Gorgeous Win (Press Statement) by a length and a half in 1m 38.25s with Talents Ambition (Into Mischief) a further neck away in third placing.

Danny Shum (Credit: HKJC)

Sent straight to the front by Atzeni, New Forest slotted his third win of the campaign – his fourth course and distance success – as Newnham slotted his 33rd victory of the season to lead Fownes (30), David Hayes (27), Shum (27), Manfred Man (21) and Size (20).

“In a small field, he got control of the pace and he's always hard to beat when he does that,” Newnham said. “He had a very easy time of it, which made it harder for Talents Ambition, but it helped New Forest.”

Newnham confirmed Talents Ambition would not travel to Dubai and instead be aimed at local targets.

“We can build on this season with both of them - there will be other races for them. Talents Ambition has been running consistently well but he needs a pace on as he gets back,” Newnham said.

Atzeni said: “He’s [New Forest] a very uncomplicated horse, who likes to go forward. In the small field, with the light weight, he was a nice ride to pick up. It was a nice win.”

Atzeni twice teamed with 13-time Hong Kong champion trainer Size, scoring with Noble Deluxe (Toronado) and Sight Dreamer (Almanzor), to have 19 wins for the campaign.

“I came here tonight with good rides, they all had chances,” Atzeni said. “So, it’s not really a surprise [to ride three winners], but it’s never easy to ride a treble. Looking at my rides that I had for the night, it’s not a big surprise.”

Size continued his surge in the 2025/26 trainers’ championship when Noble Deluxe triumphed in the Class 5 Kam Shan Handicap (1200m), before the master horseman struck again with Sight Dreamer in the Class 4 Diamond Hill Handicap (1650m).

Referring to Noble Deluxe, Size said: “There's a race for every horse in Hong Kong and that might be his,” said Size. “He did win like a horse that would win again and I'd be hopeful he will in time. He got in a nice position and the class of the race helped a bit too.

“He's a healthy and sound horse – he's always in good shape but sometimes his commitment isn't quite what it should be. Hopefully he can kick on from here.”

Brett Crawford celebrated a double with Celestial Harmony (Lope De Vega) under Lyle Hewitson in the Class 5 Silvermine Handicap (1650m) and Speedy Smartie (Satono Aladdin), who thrashed his rivals in the first section of the Class 4 Marble Handicap (1200m) for Karis Teetan.

Me Tsui struck with Vulcanus (Lean Mean Machine) under Maxime Guyon in the second section of the Class 4 Marble Handicap (1200m), before Dylan Browne McMonagle drove Dragon Air Force (Swiss Ace) to victory for Yiu in the Class 3 Green Island Handicap (1650m).

Hong Kong racing continues this Sunday at Sha Tin with the running of the Centenary Sprint Cup (Gr 1, 1200m), as the first leg of the Hong Kong Speed Series, and the Stewards’ Cup as the first leg of the Triple Crown.

Six of the best – Karaka 2026

ANZ News

Here, in lot order, is a look at six likely head-turners at Karaka’s 100th National Yearling Sale, starting Sunday.

Breeding: br c Proisir - Ruqqaya (Van Nistelrooy)
Consignor: Trelawney Stud
DOB: 18-09-24

From one of Trelawney’s finest families comes this imposing looking colt who’s a half-brother to two of the farm’s star exports - Grunt (O’Reilly) and Zayydani (Savabeel).

Grunt scored two top tier victories over the Flemington 1600 metres in the Australian Guineas and Makybe Diva Stakes en route to his current Group 1-producing stud career at Yulong, while Zayydani took the VRC’s Matriarch Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m) along with two Listed events.

While dam Ruqqaya won twice up to 2100 metres, the line revolves around second dam Sayyida (Zabeel). She was set to be euthanised after a race accident, but Trelawney’s Cherry Taylor - “heavily pregnant and near hysterical” - begged for her to be saved.

That wasn’t easy, but Sayyida has rewarded Trelawney in spades, becoming New Zealand’s Broodmare of the Year in 2013, thanks mostly to bearing Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) hero and stallion Ocean Park (Thorn Park), plus the dam of two other Group winners.

Her family has been extremely successful, and Taylor has high hopes this colt - part of Trelawney’s “really even” 22-horse draft - can live up to that rich history.

“He’s the colt that is most like Grunt at the same age that we’ve sold out of that mare,” Taylor says. “And that is the one comment people make when he comes out.

“He’s just an athlete. He’s got a great head on him - like the whole Sayyida family - and a good, relaxed walk, with a good overstep.

“He’s just a really balanced horse - not overly big, not small, just a really good even type that walks well and looks like an athlete.”

Breeding: b c Super Seth - Sombreuil (Flying Spur)
Consignor: Milan Park
DOB: 14-11-24

Sombreuil may have managed only one country win but so far she’s making an extremely good fist of broodmare life.

Her three runners have all won, and they include the outstanding Savabeel (Zabeel) pair Provence and Damask Rose.

Provence has won three Group 1s - with a timely page update coming through her Captain Cook Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) victory last month - while Damask Rose has reaped NZ$2.2 million in prize-money earnings after taking the Karaka Millions 3YO Classic (RL, 1600m) and the inaugural NZB Kiwi (RL, 1500m) back-to-back early last year.

Yet this colt’s family doesn’t stop there. Second dam Te Akau Rose (Thorn Park) won four stakes races up to Group 2 and threw two stakes performers. Third dam Straussbridge (Straussbrook) won in Listed class and also threw the Group-placed dam of Brutal (O’Reilly), the Doncaster Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) hero who’s now standing at Newgate Farm, as well as the dam of Group 3 winner Cavalry Rose (Charge Forward).

While Provence and Damask Rose have excelled over the mile, Milan Park owner Tony Rider feels Super Seth - who’s off to a flyer for Waikato Stud with four elite-level winners in just his third season of runners - has brought that hot commodity of some extra speed to Sombreuil.

“I think this colt will be more of a 1200 to 1400 metre horse,” says Rider, who’ll present a 17-strong draft at Karaka.

“He’s a very good type. We certainly won’t have a problem selling him. He’s been pretty busy during inspections.

“He’s a late foal being November-born, but he’s a very good type, very athletic, and is really growing into himself.

“He’s probably not as big as others, which I quite prefer. Super Seth can leave some big giants, but this bloke’s not overly big, but he is very well put together.”

Breeding: br c Super Seth - American Actress (Savabeel)
Consignor: Waikato Stud
DOB: 17-09-24

From the famed Waikato Stud, and from a family featuring star performers and sires Octagonal (Zabeel) and Kaapstad (Sir Tristram), comes this powerful looking colt.

Super Seth was New Zealand’s champion first and second season sire, taking two-year-old honours in that sophomore season as well, and in only his third season of runners looks bound for a glittering stud career.

And while dam American Actress won one race at Kilmore over 1462 metres, she’s a sister to The Real Beel, who won at Group 2 level and ran second in the Karaka Million 3YO Classic.

Waikato’s Mark Chittick says the well-bred mare is showing a propensity for leaving good types, judging by this colt and his one older sibling.

“He’s a great type from a good young mare, and he’s just come together so nicely,” Chittick says.

“When you look at him, he’s very hard to fault. He looks like a good, top quality horse, and he looks like a nice tidy sort of racehorse that will give you lots of thrills from 1200 to 2000 metres. I think he looks pretty versatile.

“The sire is hot, he’s left four Group 1 winners in the past 12 months. And this colt is a very, very good example of the best Super Seths on the ground.

“The mare is from a nice family that keeps producing. Certainly if she continues to leave them like this one, she’ll be one of our topline mares in the future I’m sure.”

The colt’s fourth dam is the elite-winning Marquise (Gold And Ivory), a half-sister not only to Octagonal and Kaapstad but their fellow Group 1 winners Mouawad (Zabeel) and Diamond Lover (Sticks And Stones).

Marquise also bore elite-level victor Shower Of Roses (Zabeel) and the dam of another one in Hiyaam (High Chaparral).

Breeding: ch f In The Congo - Caserta (Hussonet)
Consignor: Ardsley Stud
DOB: 10-10-24

This filly’s page started to glow even before she was born - thanks to her star half-brother War Machine (Harry Angel).

Soon after the filly’s conception, War Machine rattled off an ultra-impressive winning hat-trick culminating in the Bendigo Guineas (Listed, 1400m).

And in the months following her birth, the Hayes Brothers’ gelding unfurled another winning streak - four in a row this time including Eagle Farm’s Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m).

War Machine could give this filly’s page another boost ahead of Karaka this Friday night, as he chases a fifth stakes win at start 17 as a raging odds-on favourite in the Australia Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Pakenham.

There’s the promise of speed aplenty in this filly as well, given she’s by Newgate Farm’s first season sprinting sire In The Congo (Snitzel), not only an elite-level winner of the Golden Rose (Gr 1, 1400m), but a three-quarter brother to unbeaten sensation Autumn Glow (The Autumn Sun).

The filly’s dam Caserta has had five winners - three at city level - from five runners, and Ardsley Stud’s Jim Wallace says she’s hatched another stunner this time around.

“She’s an absolutely outstanding filly - a studmaster’s dream,” Wallace says. “She’s got everything in the right places.

“She’s strong and powerfully built, a real Australian-style, sprinting type filly. She certainly more than justifies the added expense of sending Caserta to Australia to In The Congo. We’re absolutely delighted with the result we’ve got.

“Physically she just looks like a rocket ship. She’s got great strength behind, where you want it, she’s correct in front, nice and tidy - just a really good specimen.

“She’s got a lovely temperament, her mother’s doing a great job, and she should go early.”

Breeding: b c Sword Of State - Las Brisas (Shamardal)
Consignor: Cambridge Stud
DOB: 08-09-24

One of Cambridge Stud’s most glorious success stories of recent years has been the Joe Pride-trained Ceolwulf (Tavistock), the four-time Group 1 winner of almost $11 million.

Here’s someone’s chance to go home with his half-brother, an impressive looking colt by Sword Of State (Snitzel), Cambridge’s exciting young sire who’s off to a hot start with three winners from his first eight runners. They include Australian black-type victor Torture, and the two-from-two colt Warwoven, who was favourite for last Saturday’s Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) before being scratched.

This colt is the fourth living foal of unraced British mare Las Brisas, whose page is littered with black type including Irish and English Oaks (Gr 1, 1m 4f) winner Moonstone (Dalakhani) and fellow elite-level victors Full Count Felicia (War Front) and Wellington (All Too Hard).

While there could be fewer finer advertisements than Ceolwulf, the fact this colt is by sprinter Sword Of State promises a touch more dash than is found in that son of Tavistock (Montjeu), with Ceolwulf excelling in the 1600 metre to 2000 metre range.

“It’s all very well to have a Group 1 producing mare and the right stallion, but you’ve got to get the right type of horse - and this bloke is,” says Cambridge’s sales and nominations manager Scott Calder. “He’s a horse people are going to be drawn to physically.

“He’s a good medium-sized type, a masculine horse with a good bit of muscle. Sword Of State has probably made him look a bit more forward and precocious than Ceolwulf at the same age. And of course he does have that real strength of pedigree behind him as well.

“Physically, it looks like he’d have more zip than Ceolwulf, but one of the big attractions with him is his temperament.

“Warwoven seems to be a horse who’s inherited that temperament, and that’s something we’ve seen with this colt. For people looking to buy a horse at that level, he seems to have the mindset to stay a colt.”

Breeding: b c Satono Aladdin - Lilahjay (Tavistock)
Consignor: Wentwood Grange
DOB: 04-10-24

Dam Lilahjay’s six runners have all been winners, which is great in itself, but takes on extra proportions when it’s realised one of them is called Mr Brightside (Bullbars).

That winner of ten Group 1s needs no introduction, but the glaring oddity about him is that he’s the outlier for a stallion no one would otherwise have heard of, with Bullbars siring three stakes winners from 110 runners.

This time, Lilahjay has gone to a sire whose quality looks assured - Satono Aladdin (Deep Impact).

Rich Hill’s Japanese shuttler was New Zealand’s champion 2YO and second season sire in 2023, and now has ten individual stakes winners in the country from just 78 runners, at 12.8 per cent. He has this season blasted into the top ten on the general sires’ table.

This colt has already had to conquer adversity. With Lilahjay dying soon after his birth, breeder Ed Sheather sent him to Wentwood Grange to be raised by a mare who’d lost a foal on the same day.

The product is a sizeable colt who, Wentwood Grange’s co-owner Sean Hawkins says, would have attracted plenty of interest at Karaka regardless of who his half-brother was.

“He’s a big boy, and he’s going to furnish into a lovely big strong horse, and perhaps more of a three-year-old type,” says Hawkins, whose farm has a 42-strong draft.

“There’s plenty of scope to him, he’s leggy, and he’s a nice, free-moving horse; pretty classy.

“He’s a striking colt, he’s got presence, and he’s prepped up really well. He’s already been getting a lot of attention at the complex, plus Satona Aladdin is doing a great job.”
