Queensland-based trainer Liam Birchley continued his remarkable record in the Karaka Millions
2YO (RL, 1200m) when Dream Roca took out the Ellerslie feature on Saturday, bringing up another
stakes winner for her Westbury Stud sire El Roca (Fastnet Rock) in the process.

New Zealand Bloodstock is set to mark a significant milestone as the National Yearling Sale celebrates its 100th anniversary, offering a refined catalogue of quality yearlings across three days of selling, beginning on Sunday at Karaka.
The centenary edition follows a solid 2025 renewal, when five days of trade across Book 1 and Book 2 delivered encouraging results. Across the two books, 751 yearlings were sold for an aggregate NZ$86,321,500, with a combined clearance rate of 80 per cent. The average price was NZ$114,942 and the median NZ$80,000.
What's On
International buyers accounted for 54.5 per cent of turnover, while New Zealand purchasers also
contributed significantly, purchasing 435 lots for a total spend of $39,242,500.
The sale topper was Lot 345, a Savabeel (Zabeel) filly out of Symphonic (O'Reilly), purchased for
NZ$2.4 million by Guy Mulcaster and Chris Waller on behalf of New Zealand owner Glenn Ritchie.
Offered by Haunui Farm, she became the most expensive filly ever sold at Karaka.
The second-highest lot was secured late in Book 1, when Kingsclere Stable trainers Roger James and
Robert Wellwood paid NZ$1.1 million for Lot 564, a Proisir (Choisir) filly out of Donna Marie (Don
Eduardo), offered by Hallmark Stud.
David Ellis led the buying bench with 27 purchases totalling NZ$4,757,500, while Haunui Farm was the
leading vendor by aggregate, selling 37 yearlings for NZ$7,343,000.
NZB managing director Andrew Seabrook believes the centenary edition is shaping up strongly, with a
diverse mix of international and domestic buyers present at the Karaka complex.

“We've been planning for the hundred year sale for a couple of years now,” Seabrook told ANZ News.
“For the last few months, it's been the talk of the industry, not just in New Zealand, but overseas
as well. I was over at the Gold Coast a couple of weeks ago and got a really good vibe there and
about people wanting to come over and attend the sale. Our bookings are fantastic, and walking
around the sales ground it is really busy and there is a nice atmosphere.”
Despite wet conditions early in the week, Seabrook said the resilience of the industry meant little
could dampen enthusiasm.
“Everyone's in a positive frame of mind, despite the horrendous weather on Wednesday. This is our
100th continuous sale - we've survived World War II, COVID, and the flood three years ago - so the
rain on Wednesday wasn't going to dent our enthusiasm for the next few days.”
Fresh from a successful Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, which recorded an increased
clearance rate of 86.70 per cent across both books, up from 80.44 per cent in 2025, Seabrook is
hopeful that momentum will flow into Karaka.
“The success of the Ready To Run Sale gives us confidence. The sales season seems to have started
well in Queensland, and the fact that it's our 100-year celebration allows us to get more support
from our vendors, resulting in a better catalogue.”
“
Our bookings are fantastic, and walking around the sales ground it is really busy and there is a
nice atmosphere
A key feature of the centenary edition is a slight adjustment to the sale format: with Book 1
reduced to two days of selling and Book 2 condensed to one, ensuring all yearlings were on the
complex throughout the inspection period.
A total of 567 lots, down from 661 last year, have been catalogued for Book 1, with 281 in Book 2,
down from 427, alongside 161 yearlings assembled for the Karaka Summer Sale.
“All the horses are here on the ground, so every horse has been given the same opportunity,”
Seabrook said. “In the past, some horses transitioning from Book 1 to Book 2 weren’t able to be
inspected by overseas buyers, so this has been particularly well received by Australian clients.
“We have lots of Australians here, some new faces, and some returning to lend support for the 100th
anniversary. We are really happy with the bench we have been able to assemble. Although Hong Kong
and the Hong Kong market seem to be more in tune with the Ready To Run Sale these days, there's
quite a few Hong Kong and Chinese buyers here, so that's really heartening as well.”
Seabrook believes the catalogue offers depth across all levels of the market, buoyed by the strength
of last November’s Ready to Run Sale.

“A successful Ready To Run Sale will give the pinhookers the confidence to go again. Certainly a lot
of pinhookers out there looking and when you combine that with the end users from New Zealand and
Australia and further afar, that gives us a bit of confidence that the sale should at least hold up,
but I'd be disappointed if we couldn't see an increase on last year.”
Among the vendors embracing the centenary edition is Little Avondale Stud, who will present a draft
of 19 yearlings in Book 1, including seven by their star stallion Per Incanto (Street Cry).
Owner Sam Williams said the buzz around the complex had been evident throughout inspections.
“It has been busy, but we expect it to be busy,” Williams said. “NZB deserves applause for the new
concept. The format has made it a true Book 1 and Book 2, and we're really getting behind it and
supporting it too.”
Per Incanto continues to build an exceptional record on the track, particularly in Australia,
headlined by Ciaron Maher’s sprinters Jimmysstar and Gringotts both striking at elite-level in 2025.
“
He's [Per Incanto] had a wonderful last two or three years. He's fifth in the Australian
premiership at the moment. The Australians really have just gravitated towards him
“Per Incanto is leading as far as the numbers in our draft,” Williams said. “He's had a wonderful
last two or three years. He's fifth in the Australian premiership at the moment. The Australians
really have just gravitated towards him.
“Obviously, he has Jimmysstar, Evaporate and Gringotts to the fore, but over the last couple of
days, I've had a number of trainers telling me they've got a really exciting Per Incanto in their
stable that hasn't even started yet. Now that is the most satisfying thing for me to hear from
trainers.”
Williams is confident the stud’s draft will be well received and said they had been very selective
about the type of yearlings they would offer at the sales.
“I think personally that we've got a really nice draft. We were fussy during the year with what we
were going to be taking to the yearling sales. But also in saying that, I think we were very lucky
too, with the foal crop that we had. We've worked on it over the last few years, the mares that
we've got. With Per Incanto, the stallions we’re mating to, they're the sort of sires that leave a
good style of horse.”
A potential highlight of the Little Avondale draft is
Lot 270, a filly by Newgate stallion In The Congo (Snitzel) out of winning mare Anaween (More Than Ready).
“She’s a very mature filly. In The Congo has sold extremely well in Australia, and I went to him two
years ago when Per Incanto was injured and we didn’t know if he would cover that season.
“At the time, I was also undergoing cancer treatment, so I was a bit anxious about the type of mares
I’d be able to breed and conscious of not wanting to spend heavily on service fees. I sent her to In
The Congo on a foal share with David Wallace, a mate of mine who owns shares in him, and she’s
turned out to be an absolute star filly.”
Another highlight is
Lot 333, a Per Incanto filly out of winning Exceed And Excel (Danehill) mare Candy Bar. Her third dam is
Group 1 winner Lovely Jubly (Lion Hunter), who in turn produced champion sprinter Chautauqua
(Encosta De Lago).
“Lot 333 is an absolute star. She is from a very fast Australian family, Chatauqua's family. It's a
family that doesn't often go on the market, so the Australians turn up here and see one of their
star sprinting families here in New Zealand, but it's by Per Incanto, and he is, I guess you could
say, the first stallion ever in New Zealand history to consistently leave top class sprinters in
Australia, so it's an attraction for them.”
Lot 311
also holds special significance for Williams, being a half-brother to the Zoustar (Northern Meteor)
colt sold by Little Avondale for $1.7 million at last year’s Inglis Easter Yearling Sale, the
highest price ever sold off the farm.

“We have a magnificent Russian Revolution colt. He is out of a Per Incanto Group-winning mare
Belluci Babe. She was the mother of the first seven figure yearling we ever sold, last year for $1.7
million. He's a ripping type. And I think Per Incanto as a broodmare sire is really going to leave a
legacy and trainers are really noting him as a broodmare sire.”
Milan Park owner Tony Rider was also confident that the positive atmosphere around the complex would
translate to strong results in the ring.
“We've got 17 horses in the draft,” Rider told ANZ News. “I just had Bruce Slade over there, and he
commented on the whole draft that it was probably the most consistent draft here at Karaka. We spend
a lot of time working out the bloods, doing the pedigree, and Grant's [Bennett, stud manager] job is
all about making sure they get here safely and they look good. Condition wise, not too fat, not too
thin. So there's a real fine line in there, getting them right.
“You’ve got to take your hat off to NZB, Andrew Seabrook and the team,” he added. “There's a lot of
faces here that I've never seen. They've really promoted it well. They've asked a lot of owners to
keep their horses here. We do keep our horses here, but we've got fillies here that wouldn't
normally be here, it's because it's the 100th year.”
Cambridge Stud will offer 70 yearlings across both books, with owners Brendan and Jo Lindsay once
again committing their entire draft to the National Yearling Sale.
Scott Calder, sales and nominations at Cambridge, said the centenary edition was a fitting occasion
to continue that support.
Lot 333: Per Incanto ex Candy Bar filly (Credit: NZB)
“Brendan and Jo made that decision quite early in the piece and I think it's fitting this year given
it's the 100th year,” Calder said. “Brendan and Jo are very keen to support the sale and be a big
part of it, but it means there's a lot of horses and it's been a lot of logistics to get it all come
together. Alice Jeffries, our yearling manager, and everyone's done an amazing job. Thankfully,
we've got a big number of horses, but it's a very good draft right through from the top, right
through.”
Calder believes buyer appetite remains strong following the Gold Coast results.
He said: “I think we always watch Magics closely and I wasn't there, but looking at it and talking
to people, it sounds like it was as buoyant as you could hope for. So naturally you have to be
optimistic.
“Our inspections have been really solid. We had the one day with the rain that was a washout for us,
but yesterday was as busy a day as we've had and today's really busy too. I’m not saying the sale is
going to break records, but I think it'll hold up well.”
Meanwhile, Irish-born, New Zealand-based bloodstock agent Ed Stapleton said excitement had been
building steadily in the lead-up to the centenary sale.
Lot 311: Russian Revolution ex Belluci Babe colt (Credit: NZB)
He said: “The general feeling on the ground is one of excitement, and appreciation for some very
good stock. The 100-year celebration has been talked about for a while, but the momentum really
started about four weeks ago, when we had the on-farm parades, and it has really followed onto here.
“We were privileged to see a lot of really good stock on the parades, and they have arrived here at
Karaka, we are twice as excited to see them. I think, in general, stock quality is up everywhere is
the general consensus.”
A regular on the international sales circuit, Stapleton praised the atmosphere created at Karaka
despite challenging conditions.
“Despite the rain, there are plenty of people here and plenty of shows are happening,” he said.
“Most vendors would say that they have bigger footfalls than other years and I think it's going to
be a really good sale. I'm excited for it, there is plenty going on and the hospitality of every
vendor is second to none.”
A frequent pinhooker, Stapleton said the sale continues to cater to a wide range of buyers, while
underpinning NZB’s successful Ready To Run Sale.
He said: “On the back of the Ready To Run sale’s success last year, there's plenty of people who
would be looking for trade horses. There's a lot of Australian trainers here, there's a lot of Hong
Kong and Asian market interest, which don't typically come down, so that's great. I think most
vendors are going to have a good time, so it is all positive.”
With selling set to get under way at 10am (NZT) on Sunday, Seabrook also highlighted the role of
Ellerslie’s Karaka Millions twilight meeting as a powerful lead-in to the week.
He said: “It was our 19th Karaka Millions night last night. Sponsored by TAB now, and it's just
under NZ$5 million. When we started 19 years ago, the 3-year-old race was only NZ$100,000 and that's
gone to NZ$1.5 million, and then to have a Group 1 on the card and the four-year-old NZ$1 million
race, and two other group races is huge.
“It's now the biggest night of the year, and it's the biggest race day of the year, punting wise. On
turnover per race, there's no bigger race meeting in New Zealand for punting. So it's a great entrée
into the week, and hopefully it's the launch of a successful week.”
Queensland-based trainer Liam Birchley continued his remarkable record in the Karaka Millions 2YO
(RL, 1200m) when Dream Roca took out the Ellerslie feature on Saturday, bringing up another stakes
winner for her Westbury Stud sire El Roca (Fastnet Rock) in the process.
Sent out second favourite at $4.80 after breaking her maiden on her second start in a 1000-metre
Eagle Farm juvenile handicap on December 13, Dream Roca jumped well from gate one of 14 under Ben
Thompson, and travelled just behind the pace.
A huge upset threatened when leader Magill (Farnan) - the Hastings-trained longshot who started at
$151 in some markets - maintained his advantage long after turning for home.
Dream Roca had trouble extricating herself from a pocket for the first half of the straight, but
once clear at the 180 metres charged hard after Magill. The bolter was not to be easily denied,
boxing on hard on the fence, but was finally overhauled late on as Dream Roca scored by 0.2 lengths.
Team Hayes’s Caulfield Debutant Stakes (Listed, 1000m) winner Torture (Sword Of State) took third at
$5.50, while odds-on favourite Kinnaird (Home Affairs) came in last.

Birchley - who has 35 named horses on his books at his Sunshine Coast stable - isn’t known as one of
Queensland’s largest trainers, and counts three Group 2 victories as his career highlights on the
black type scale.
Yet he has now crossed the Tasman to win New Zealand’s lucrative NZ$1 million feature three times,
having also scored with Sister Havana (General Nediym) in 2010, and gelding Hardline (Showcasing) in
2015.
Dream Roca’s success also brought up a hat-trick for fillies in the race, with La Dorada (Super
Seth) successful last year, and Velocious (Written Tycoon) taking the honours in 2024.
Asked for the secret of his success in the event, Birchley told Sky: “Just to get an athlete. That’s
what you need here.
“It’s tremendous to get it three times. I know how hard it is. The standard of two-year-olds here
has improved markedly over the last ten years.”
Dream Roca - one of 13 stakes winners from 315 runners (4.1 per cent) for El Roca (Fastnet Rock) -
was bought for $75,000 last year at Karaka from Westbury’s draft by Bloodstock Solutions.
Raced by a large syndicate, she showed talent with a 0.9 length second on debut at Eagle Farm before
her breakthrough win, and looked ultra impressive with her dogged finish when stepped up to the 1200
metres on Saturday.
“We were lucky enough to draw number one, which saves you a lot of work in the run. We could take it
easy and save the best for the end,” Birchley said.
“From barrier one, you’re going to get the best run no matter what if you’ve got the right jock.
He’s an emerging superstar this jock [Thompson].”
He added: “I’ve got a lot of really close friends in this horse, going back a long way. One of them
has sadly just died in the last few weeks, so this means a lot.”
“
I thought I’d need a bit of luck, but with the track playing so fair I’d just need to be patient
and wait for a run, and she gave me a great kick
Thompson said the win in his first look at Ellerslie felt “very surreal”.
“This is a class filly,” he told Sky. “All credit to Liam Birchley. He’s a brilliant trainer and it
just fills you with so much confidence riding any horse of his, especially a two-year-old.
“The barrier was just ideal. I settled for a trail. I was pretty much just guided by her [Dream
Roca]. I’d ridden her in all three starts so I had a lot of confidence in her.
“I thought I’d need a bit of luck, but with the track playing so fair I’d just need to be patient
and wait for a run, and she gave me a great kick.”
Bred by Westbury boss Gerry Harvey, Dream Roca is the first foal out of Petrachor (Redwood), a
five-time winner in New Zealand.
Third dam Tanith (Chief’s Crown) ran third in Caulfield’s Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) and was
second at Group 2 level.
Fourth dam Bislotto (Bellotto) won a Flemington Listed and threw the Group 3 and Listed winning Bel
Danoro (Danehill), as well as the dams of elite-level victors Mascarpone (Shooting To Win) and Sofia
Rosa (Makfi).
Petrachor now has a yearling filly by another Westbury sire in Swiss Ace (Secret Savings) and was
covered again by El Roca last spring.
Australia on the cards for ultra-impressive Well Written
“Bring on Australia” was the message from winning jockey Matt Cartwright after Well Written (Written
Tycoon) lived up to her exciting reputation with a breathtaking fifth win from as many starts in
Saturday’s Karaka Millions 3YO Classic (RL, 1600m).
The Stephen Marsh-trained sensation went into the NZ$1.5 million feature as a prohibitive odds-on
favourite, having built an ultra-impressive CV through her first four starts.
Well Written (Credit: Race Images)
That included a 2.5 length romp in her one elite-level attempt, the New Zealand 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1,
1600m) in November, in her first start bearing Yulong’s colours after a 50 per cent buy-in from the
stud that stands her sire, Written Tycoon (Iglesia).
Marsh admitted he’d been nervous before Well Written’s last start in the Auckland Guineas (Gr 2,
1400m), when a troublesome parade left her trainer “a shade of green” before his charge managed a
0.3 length success.
But there were no such misgivings on Saturday, and far less doubt about the verdict. Well Written
settled in midfield from gate three of 13, found clear air at the 300 metres, and veritably exploded
away from her rivals to score by six lengths.
Te Akau Racing pair He Who Dares (Snitzel) and La Dorada (Super Seth) took second and third.
The NZ$797,500 first prize took Well Written’s earnings to NZ$1.42 million, and had Cartwright
almost lost for words as the expat Australian reflected on what fate had brought him since his brave
decision to move from Melbourne to New Zealand for better opportunities in 2024.
“Wow - I think we’ve seen a very, very special win today,” Cartwright told Sky.
“The best horse I have ever ridden. This thing is an absolute weapon. It’s so exciting.
“We got the right run, I got through, and wow - I nearly fell off the back of her.
“The job was on today with her - she was very keen today. But I’ve always just wanted to ride her
with a bit of cover. Every time I’ve ridden her, she drops her head and relaxes, just so she can
show that great turn of foot.
“She’s a very, very good horse. I think she’s right up to it with Australia’s best.”
Marsh indicated he wouldn’t charge into an Australian mission with the filly without a good deal of
consideration, saying her next major target would be the $4 million slot race, The Kiwi (1500m) at
Ellerslie on March 7.
“We’ll just play around with her. You’ll see her in The Kiwi,” said Marsh, a mixture of relief and
ecstasy.
“Everything went good early. We probably got a length further back than I thought, but then you see
her come up underneath Matt, and gee.
“I just thought she paraded so much better today. I was a shade of green before her last start, but
I was relatively relaxed today.
“What have we just seen? We’ve seen something very special. I’m absolutely over the moon.
“People have said, ‘How good is she? Is she the best we’ve had?’ I hope she keeps continuing this
way and I hope we are saying she’s the best.
“But she’s awesome. She’s back, unbelievable, and she just keeps on improving, so it’s very, very
exciting.”
Marsh said he was pleased to see Cartwright stay calm when Well Written was still several lengths
off the leaders in the ruck on the turn.
“One thing I always say to them is, ‘Just don’t panic. If you get into a bit of trouble, just have
faith in the horse and yourself, and it’ll happen’. He didn’t panic, and that’s what I like about
Matt,” said Marsh, admitting it was a thrill to have a horse of this ability.
“It makes me feel bloody good actually. This is why we all do it. This helps us out of bed. I love
seeing the owners, everyone’s so excited, she’s got a following and she hasn’t let them down yet.”
“
She’s a very, very good horse. I think she’s right up to it with Australia’s best
Well Written has quickly become a star money-spinner for her connections, especially considering her
modest origins.
She was initially offered as a weanling by breeder David Digney via Lemrac Lodge at Inglis’s Great
Southern Sale. She was bought for $32,500 by Foxhill Thoroughbreds, which has Benji and Harry King
behind it. The brothers are sons of Nick and Anne-Marie King of New Zealand’s Brighthill Farm, with
Harry now best known as Yulong’s sales and nominations manager, through which he has a keen interest
in Written Tycoon.
Well Written was then pinhooked through Brighthill’s draft at New Zealand Bloodstock’s National
Online Yearling Sale in 2024, bought by Marsh and Dylan Johnson Bloodstock for $80,000 - a figure
she’s already recouped many times over, with many more times set to come.
The well proportioned chestnut is the first foal - and only one to race of three - from Mozzie
Monster (Sebring), who was twice Listed placed in Victoria and is a daughter of Melbourne Group 3
victor Valentine Miss (Danetime).
Mozzie Monster now has a colt foal by Nicconi (Bianconi) but missed to Written Tycoon last month.
Well Written is one of 82 stakes winners from 1,354 runners (6.05 per cent) for Written Tycoon, the
23-year-old who covered 43 mares under fee-on-arrangement terms at Yulong last spring, according to
latest studbook figures.
New Zealand has been a particularly fertile field for Written Tycoon. He has six black type victors
there from 36 starters, at 16.66 per cent.
Jigsaw bounces back to form with fine Railway triumph
Having failed to score in two-and-a-half years before rattling off a hat-trick last spring,
born-again seven-year-old Jigsaw (Manhattan Rain) is now an elite-level winner.
Jigsaw (Credit: Race Images)
The gelding - trained by Cranbourne’s Cindy Alderson and bred by her mother Lynne - raised his most
important triumph among 13 career victories in Saturday’s Railway Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Ellerslie.
His prior winning hat-trick had included Moonee Valley’s McEwen Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) followed by
Cranbourne’s $1 million slot race The Meteorite (1200m), but the NZ$700,000 Railway was easily the
most impressive of his now four-race streak.
Jumping from barrier ten of 13 under Logan Bates, the Kiwi apprentice now based in Melbourne, Jigsaw
speared across to sit outside leader and short priced favourite Alabama Lass (Alabama Express) as a
solid pace ensued.
Jigsaw went to the lead at the 250 metres as Alabama Lass weakened, and Bates braced for challenges
from behind.
But while another well fancied Australian - the Hayes brothers’ Arkansaw Kid (Harry Angel) - emerged
to threaten to his inside, Jigsaw kept finding towards the line and scored by 0.8 lengths.
Sweynesday (Sweynesse) was the same distance away in third for the Roger James and Robert Wellwood
team.
After Jigsaw’s Meteorite success, Alderson said she couldn’t point to any reason for his resurgence
other than “a lovely spell” and the fact he’d regained his confidence.
He looked the very picture of confidence as he staved off Arkansaw Kid on Saturday, in a win which
shot his earnings well past the AU$2 million mark.
He also set emotions flying for Alderson - the daughter of famed Cranbourne conditioner Colin - as
she celebrated her first Group 1, and for the young rider she has so richly supported since his move
across the Tasman.
“It means everything,” said Bates, also revelling in his first elite-level triumph.
“I remember before I even started riding, Cindy and I had a conversation and she said one of her
greatest achievements would be to see me win a Group 1 and the comment at the end was that it would
be even better if it was in her colours for the Alderson family, and we have done it.”
Bates, 24, has formed a dynamic partnership with Jigsaw, having ridden him in all four wins of his
current streak after initially partnering him for the first-up fourth at Caulfield which preceded
it.
“What a beautiful horse,” he said. “You wouldn’t think he was a seven-year-old gelding to come back
like this and get better and better. Every day I rode him going this way [right-handed] and all the
work that we have done with him I just grew in confidence.
“The plan was either to lead if it was there or if they were rolling along at a tempo where he was
happy in his rhythm. When I gave him a squeeze and he ranged up to Alabama Lass, he grew with
confidence and gave me an unbelievable kick.
“There are so many people to thank. I have got Mum and Dad here, my partner, my good mate Jake, and
to do it for Cindy is just unreal.
“
Coming here and racing on one of the best days here and taking out one of their bigger Group 1s in
the Railway is just incredible
“It was like it was meant to be, to come back to where I grew up in New Zealand. Even his [Jigsaw]
mother was from New Zealand. Coming here and racing on one of the best days here and taking out one
of their bigger Group 1s in the Railway is just incredible.”
Six-time stakes winner Jigsaw is the third of four named foals for New Zealand-bred mare Demandz
(Lonhro), a city winner on both sides of the Tasman, who was trained in Australia in partnership by
Colin and Cindy Alderson.
Demandz’s second foal Queen Adele (Adelaide) was Listed placed, also for Cindy Alderson.
Cindy and mother Lynne now have Demandz’s yearling filly by Street Boss (Street Cry) who’s been
named Labyrinth, and her filly foal by Cylinder (Exceed And Excel).
Jigsaw is among three stakes winners for Manhattan Rain this season, the other two being
four-year-old gelding Sabaj, who took the Cranbourne Cup (Listed, 1600m), and the mare New York
Lustre, who won the Begonia Belle Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) at Flemington on Derby Day.
The 19-year-old Manhattan Rain now has 21 stakes winners from 458 runners at 4.6 per cent, including
three elite-level victors in Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) queen She Will Reign, Australasian Oaks
(Gr 1, 2000m) heroine Benagil, and South African star Whisky Baron.
Manhattan Rain most recently stood for $6,050 at Geisel Park, where he’s covered 177 mares in the
past four seasons since moving to WA, according to latest studbook figures.
Tuxedo produces smart performance at Ellerslie
Tuxedo (Tivaci) made up for a heartbreaking second on Ellerslie’s feature raceday last year and
pushed his earnings into seven figures with a determined win in the NZ$1 million Aotearoa Classic
(Gr 3, 1600m) on Saturday.
Ridden to perfection from a sticky gate nine of 16 by comeback jockey Opie Bosson, the Shaun Ritchie
and Colin Murray-trained Tuxedo settled midfield one off the fence as the field strung out under a
strong pace.
Bosson bided his time in the middle of the ruck, found clear air at the 300 metres, and his $8.50
chance settled into a beautiful rhythm to gradually mow down Andrew Forsman’s brave leader Hinekaha
(Savabeel) and win by 0.3 lengths. The Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained visitor Knobelas
(Belardo) took third, 0.7 lengths further away.
Tuxedo (Credit: Race Images)
From humble beginnings, Tuxedo has now won five of his 12 starts including two Group 3s and a Group
2, the latter being last February’s Waikato Guineas (Gr 2, 2000m).
A son of former Waikato Stud stallion Tivaci (High Chaparral) - whose lack of success led to his
exportation to China in September 2024 - Tuxedo was bought from Waikato’s draft for $70,000 at the
Karaka sale in 2023 by co-owner Grant Barnett.
He now ranks second-best among Tivaci’s seven stakes winners from 277 runners, after Group 1 victor
Never Been Kissed, and Saturday’s NZ$500,000 first prize took his earnings to NZ$1.04 million.
The win, which came with the benefit of newly added blinkers, also made up for Tuxedo’s one length
second on the same day last year in the Karaka Million 3YO Classic behind the outstanding Damask
Rose (Savabeel).
“He’s always shown us plenty of ability,” said co-trainer Ritchie. “I thought the blinkers would
help a little bit.”
Ritchie paid tribute to Bosson, who returned to riding last August after only six months in
retirement.
“You just don’t give Opie Bosson instructions on Karaka Million night,” he said. “I did just say one
little thing - that when you go for him he’ll be a little reactive, because the blinkers will
probably switch him on like they did in trackwork last week. But he’s one of the best, Opie, isn’t
he?”
Tuxedo is named for his dam Ball Gown (O’Reilly), and has inspired his owners - and consequently his
trainers - to stand out from the crowd in their formal dinner wear when he races.
“
You just don’t give Opie Bosson instructions on Karaka Million night
“I’m delighted for my clients,” Richie said from behind his black bow tie. “They’ve been with us for
years and years and they’ve put a lot of money in, and days like this is what it’s all about, so I’m
thrilled for them all.
“They really get a kick out of it and they enjoy every moment of it. It’s a fantastic game to get
people together and I’m glad to be a part of it myself.
“I just hope they don’t buy a filly and call it Mini Skirt, because I won’t look that flash.”
Ritchie said he’d “love to have a little crack at Australia” with Tuxedo, but was also considering
running him in next month’s Otaki Mile (Gr 1, 1600m).
Bosson was full of praise for Tuxedo’s tenacity up the Ellerslie straight.
“All I needed was a split. Once we got out and balanced up he did the rest. When I came out, I
thought I was a big chance and then he [Hinekaha] kicked again on the inside. To his [Tuxedo’s]
credit, he stuck to his guns and kept going,” said Bosson, delighted with a major win to affirm his
comeback decision.
“To get back in the saddle and to get another big one is great.”
Tuxedo is the first foal out of Ball Gown, whose Sydney city-winning dam Fancy Dress (Savabeel) is a
half-sister to Group 2 winner Sports Illustrated (Fast ’N’ Famous).
Fourth dam Flying Floozie (Pompeii Court) is the dam of five-time, dual hemisphere Group 1 winner
Starcraft (Soviet Star), and Forum Floozie (Danasinga), a Sydney Listed winner who was also three
times placed at the top level.
Tuxedo is the only runner of three named foals for Ball Gown, whose son of Super Seth (Dundeel) will
be offered by Waikato Stud as
Lot 298
at the Karaka Yearling Sale on Monday.

Second for Acrobat
Coolmore first-season sire Acrobat (Fastnet Rock) registered his second individual winner
when the Stephen Marsh-trained King Of The Air (2 g ex Lady Of The Falls by Sacred Falls)
struck on debut over 1200 metres at New Plymouth on Saturday. Ridden by Jonathan Riddell,
the gelding proved 2.7 lengths too strong for his four rivals, the closest of them being
Turn Me Loose (Iffraaj) filly In The Vineyard. Bred by his owners Arkle Bloodstock and
Fethard Bloodstock, King Of The Air is the first foal out of Lady Of The Falls (Sacred
Falls), who is a half-sister to 2021 Queensland Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Kukeracha (Night
Of Thunder) and Group 3 winner Cameo (Shamardal). The mare, a $55,000 purchase for Demi
O’Byrne at the 2022 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale, has since produced two
full-siblings to King Of The Air. Acrobat stood for a fee of $11,000 (inc GST) in 2025.
Four for Manhattan Rain
Manhattan Rain (Encosta De Lago), Geisel Park Stud’s evergreen resident, scored his fourth
individual top-flight winner when the Cindy Alderson-trained Jigsaw (7 g Manhattan Rain ex
Demandz by Lonhro) took out Saturday’s Railway Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Ellerslie. Out of the
three-time winner Demandz (Lonhro), Jigsaw is a half-brother to Listed-placed winner Queen
Adele (Adelaide). Demandz herself is out of Listed winner Loaded Command (Commands) and this
is the same family as Group 1-winning pair Mid Summer Music (Oamaru Force) and Stefi
Magnetica (All Too Hard). Manhattan Rain covered 40 mares last season at a fee of $6,050
(inc GST).
156 for Savabeel
Acer (Credit: Race Images)
Well-bred Belle Cheval (3 f ex Keepa Cheval by Keeper) advertised her credentials for the
lucrative NZB Kiwi (1500m) when she landed Saturday’s Almanzor Trophy (Gr 3, 1200m) at
Ellerslie and in the process provided Waikato’s marquee stallion Savabeel (Zabeel) with his
156th individual stakes winner. Trained by Mark Walker and Sam Bergerson, the three-year-old
filly defeated Bulgari (Hello Youmzain) by 1.3 lengths. Drops Of God (Hello Youmzain) came
home a further 0.2 lengths away in third. Bred by prominent racing identity David Archer,
Belle Cheval is out of Keepa Cheval (Keeper), making her a half-sister to three-time Group 1
winner The Bostonian (Jimmy Choux) as well as Group 3 winner Cheval D’Or (Almanzor).
Savabeel has 31 lots (after withdrawals) catalogued for Book 1 of the New Zealand Bloodstock
Karaka Yearling Sale.
Belle Cheval hands Karaka-bound sibling timely update
Belle Cheval (Credit: Race Images)
In winning Saturday’s Almanzor Trophy at Ellerslie, Belle Cheval handed a timely update to
her Almanzor (Wootton Bassett) half-brother who is set to be offered by Lansdowne Park at
Book 1 of the NZB Karaka Yearling Sale on Monday. The colt is catalogued as
Lot 500.
The victory would also have been welcomed by NZB Kiwi slot holder The King’s Men, who
announced on Friday they had secured the Mark Walker and Sam Bergerson-trained filly as
their representative for the $4 million Champions Day feature in March, and that choice was
quickly vindicated.
“She is a very nice filly,” said winning jockey Craig Williams. “She was favourite for a
reason and the fact that she was first-up over 1200 metres and she could utilise her barrier
draw, she won untouched today.”
The lightly raced filly had three prior starts in the spring, culminating in her placing in
the New Zealand 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) at Riccarton in November, and Walker believes
that southern trip has proven to be the making of her.
“That’s why we love taking horses to Riccarton in the spring,” he said. “The trip down to
Riccarton just made her. Mentally she was just a bit soft going down there but with that
experience she has come back more mature, more experienced and she has got it all ahead of
her.”
With the NZB Kiwi now firmly in their sights, Walker said Belle Cheval will likely be given
one more start before the March 7 feature, before connections potentially look across the
Tasman for further targets.
“The 1500 metres will be right up her alley,” Walker said. “Perhaps we will go to the Lisa
Chittick at Matamata [on February 14] where she will have home track advantage.
“Lisa Chittick was a very special person to all the Te Akau crew and we would love to win
that race.”
13 for El Roca
Westbury Stud-based sire El Roca (Fastnet Rock) sired his 13th individual stakes winner when
the Australian raider Dream Roca (2 f ex Petrachor by Redwood) landed Saturday’s Karaka
Millions 2YO (RL, 1200m) at Ellerslie. A NZ$75,000 pickup for Bloodstock Solutions from the
draft of her breeder Westbury Stud at Book 2 of last year’s NZB Karaka Yearling Sale, Dream
Roca is out of the five-time winning mare Petrachor (Redwood), who is half-sister to
Listed-paced winner Niobe (Niello). El Roca stood the 2025 season for a fee of NZ$10,000
(plus GST).
155 for Savabeel
The first leg of Savabeel’s Saturday stakes double was provided by the Lance O’Sullivan and
Andrew Scott-trained Acer (3 f ex Sweet Treat by Ekraar) courtesy of her victory in the Oaks
Prelude (Listed, 1800m) at New Plymouth. Providing the multiple champion stallion with his
155th individual stakes winner, the three-year-old filly bounced back from a ninth-placed
finish in Listed Company earlier in the month to beat Te Akau’s She Suits Herself (Savile
Row) by 0.1 lengths. Unbounded (Turn Me Loose) finished a further 4.1 lengths adrift in
third. Passed in at the 2024 edition of the New Zealand Bloodstock Karaka Yearling Sale,
Acer is out of Listed winner Sweet Treat (Ekraar), a half-sister to Listed-placed winner
Ezra (Iffraaj), the dam of fellow stakes-placed scorer Ezdara (Scared Falls). Acer holds a
nomination for the New Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) at Ellerslie on February 21 and she is
rated a $21 chance in the Classic.
Nine for Castledale
In winning Saturday’s Taranaki Cup (Gr 3, 1800m) at New Plymouth, Knights Realm (6 g ex Qui
Vivra Verra by Stravinsky) became the ninth individual stakes winner for Castledale (Peintre
Celebre). The Clinton Isdale-trained six-year-old gelding stylishly pulled clear in the
closing stages, crossing the line 7.1 lengths ahead of runner-up Enrico (El Roca), while
Bridal Train (U S Navy Flag) finished a further 0.3 lengths further away in third. Knights
Realm is out of placed mare Qui Vivra Verra (Stravinsky), making him a half-brother to three
winners.
Three for Telperion
Telperion (Street Cry) was provided with his third individual stakes winner when the Barbara
Kennedy-trained Pour The Wine (6 m ex Needlly by O’Reilly) landed Saturday’s Timaru Stakes
(Listed, 1200m) at Riccarton. The six-year-old mare defeated Betty Spaghetti (Stratum Star)
by 2.2 lengths with Tomasina (Darci Brahma) finishing a further 0.2 lengths away in third.
Pour The Wine is out of the stakes-placed winner Needlly (O’Reilly), making him a
half-brother to Listed-placed winner Sorrento (Iffraaj). Needlly herself is a half-sister to
stakes winner Tomorrowland (Fast ‘N’ Famous).

First for Profiteer
Newgate Farm first-season stallion Profiteer sired his first winner when Star Of Jamaica (2
c ex Raziel by Per Incanto) broke his maiden over 1000 metres at the Sunshine Coast on
Saturday. Ridden by Ryan Maloney for trainers Chris and Corey Munce, the colt struck at the
second time of asking, scoring by 1.8 lengths over Cause She Can (Worthy Cause) with Harry’s
Back (Bivouac) just 0.2 lengths further back in third. Bred by Spectrum Racing, Star Of
Jamaica was a $85,000 purchase for his trainers out of the Alma Vale Thoroughbreds draft at
the 2025 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale. He is the second foal and only one to race out of the
Per Incanto (Street Cry) mare Raziel. Profiteer stood for $11,000 (inc GST) in 2025.
First for Splintex
Darling View Thoroughbreds’ first-season sire Splintex (Snitzel) also got off the mark on
Saturday courtesy of They'reallsisters (2 f ex River Hussy by Husson), who became the son of
Snitzel’s (Redoute’s Choice) first winner when she broke her maiden in the Magic Millions
Plate (1200m) at Ascot. Ridden by Lucy Fiore for David Harrison, the filly, who was defeated
by Boy Crush (Manhattan Rain) on debut earlier this month, reversed the form with that colt
to win by 0.4 lengths, with Sovereign Rock (Awesome Rock) another 3.9 lengths away in third.
Bred by Ms M Ojapold, who retains an interest in the filly, They'reallsisters was a $90,000
purchase for Ryan Fuller at the 2025 Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale. She is one of three
winners out of the Husson (Hussonet) mare River Hussy, who herself is out of the Group
3-placed Mossriver (Mossman). Splintex stood for a fee of $7,700 (inc GST) in the spring.
16 for Rubick
Rubick (Encosta De Lago) notched his 16th individual stakes winner when Rubi’s Choice (2 f
ex Redasun by Haradasun) lifted Saturday’s Blue Diamond Preview (F) (Gr 3, 1000m) at
Caulfield. Bred by Mr L Krongold, Rubi’s Choice is one of four winners out of the winning
Haradasun (Fusaichi Pegasus) mare Redasun, also among them city winner Lincoln Square
(Rubick). Having retired to Coolmore Stud and later transferred to Swettenham Stud, where he
most recently stood for a fee of $27,500 in 2024, Rubick was sold to continue his stud
career in China last year.
Five for Alabama Express
Yulong Stud sire Alabama Express (Redoute’s Choice) was supplied with his fifth individual
stakes winner when Alibaba (2 c ex Rowsthorn by Written Tycoon) took out Saturday’s Blue
Diamond Preview (C\&G) (Listed, 1000m) at Caulfield. Bred by Yulong, Alibaba is out of
the winning Written Tycoon (Iglesia) mare Rowsthorn and a brother to the stakes-placed
Strideaway. Yulong will offer a yearling colt out of Rowsthorn by Lucky Vega (Lope De Vega)
at Inglis Easter as
Lot 52. The mare produced another colt by Lucky Vega last spring and was then covered again by
Alabama Express. The son of Redoute’s Choice (Danehill) covered 227 mares at Yulong Stud in
the spring at a fee of $66,000 (inc GST).
76 for Zoustar
Space Rider (Credit: Racing Photos)
Widden Stud’s reigning Australian champion sire Zoustar (Northern Meteor) added a 76th
individual stakes winner to his record with Space Rider’s (3 c ex Fuddle Dee Duddle by Red
Ransom) bullish first-up victory in the Manfred Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Caulfield on
Saturday.
Last seen finishing down the field in the Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) in October, Space
Rider overcame what co-trainer Michael Kent Jnr saw as a tricky barrier in ten to hold off
challengers on either side in the Group 3, maintaining his perfect record fresh-up at three
for three.
Sent out a $15 chance, the colt scored by a half-length over stablemate Job Done (Snitzel)
who will now be spelled, with favourite Salty Pearl (Tagaloa) another half-length away in
third.
The winner is set on a path towards the Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) at Flemington on
February 28, for which he firmed into $15 (from $26) after Saturday’s win. Flemington’s CS
Hayes Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) on February 14 looks the likely next target.
"Mick [Price, co-trainer] said not to get too far out of your ground because I wasn't to see
him through the line," winning jockey Ethan Brown said.
"He bounced well and put himself there but he is a big colt who needs stimulation so I was
happy to have him travelling with the tempo, even though we probably hit the front a bit
soon.
"I just played around with him – one on the left, one on the right – just kept him thinking
but when other horses got to him he pinned his ears back and wanted to win that race."
Price won the CS Hayes Stakes and the Australian Guineas with Grunt (O’Reilly) in 2016
before the partnership with Kent Jnr began.
Bred by Longwood Park, Space Rider is the second Group winner out of the Group 3-winning
mare Fuddle Dee Duddle (Red Ransom) after his brother Brereton landed the Maribyrnong Plate
(Gr 3, 1000m) in 2021. The mare is herself a half-sister to the Group 1-placed Gilgai Stakes
(Gr 2, 1200m) winner Hallowell Belle (Starcraft).
Space Rider was purchased by Mick Price Racing and Breeding Pty Ltd/TFI/Dermot Farrington
Bloodstock for $500,000 at the 2024 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.
Zoustar, who enjoyed a race-to-race stakes double at Caulfield when Regal Zeus landed the
John Dillon Stakes (Listed, 1400m), stood for an unchanged fee of $275,000 (inc GST) in
2025.
Regal Zeus takes Listed honours
The John McArdle-trained Regal Zeus ((5 g Zoustar ex Quiet Kitten by Kitten's Joy)
added a third Listed win for the preparation with a determined display in the John Dillon
Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at Caulfield on Saturday. Winner of the Kilmore Cup (Listed, 1600m)
at the end of November and then the MRC Lord Stakes (Listed, 1600m) at Sandown-Lakeside on
Boxing Day, the five year-old led from the outset and was tenacious to the line, scoring by
0.2 lengths over Hughes (Russian Revolution) with Justadeel (Dundeel) another 0.8 lengths
away in third. A $150,000 Inglis Easter purchase for Regal Bloodstock, Blue Grass (FBAA) and
Redgum Racing from the Edinburgh Park draft, Regal Zeus was bred by Ian Smith and is the
best of two winners out of the Group 3-placed Quiet Kitten (Kitten's Joy), from the family
of Group 2 winner Glenfiddich (Fastnet Rock) and stakes winner Eleven Eleven (Fastnet Rock).
Quiet Kitten sold to Kingstar Farm for $120,000 out of the Edinburgh Park Dispersal at Magic
Millions National in 2023. Kingstar sold a Zoustar colt out of the mare at last year’s
Inglis Classic Yearling Sale for $200,000 and after missing in 2023, she was then covered by
Zoustar’s Group 1-winning son Ozzmosis and produced a three-quarter brother to Regal Zeus
before going back to Ozzmosis last spring.
Way To The Stars shines at Caulfield
The Matt Smith-trained Way To The Stars (7 g Reward For Effort ex Writteninthestars by
Written Tycoon) added a second stakes win to his record and thrust himself into the picture
for next month’s Oakleigh Plate (Gr 1, 1000m) when he landed Saturday’s WJ Adams Stakes
(Listed, 1000m) at Caulfield. Last seen finishing second in the Bribie Quality (Listed,
1000m) at Eagle Farm on December 13, the gelding defeated Oak Hill (Per Incanto) by 0.8
lengths with another 0.1 lengths back to Geegees Mistruth (Wordsmith) in third. “He ran a
blinder last start in a strong race – the key to today was just getting him out the gates.
Once he bounced, I was never going to hand up the lead,” winning jockey Ethan Brown said.
“He’s a horse with sustained speed, we used that, that’s his main asset, and he pulled away
late – it was a good win. He’s got the speed, and he’ll drop down in the weights, so he’ll
be well-placed in an Oakleigh Plate.” Way To The Stars’s previous stakes win came in
November’s Century Stakes (Listed, 1000m). The Oakleigh Plate will be contested at Caulfield
on February 21.
Taken back in winning groove
The Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained Taken (Ardrossan) recorded his sixth win from 12
career starts with another impressive performance in a Benchmark 1000 (1700m) at Caulfield
on Saturday. The New Zealand-bred gelding made a big impression with his progress through
the grades last year, stringing together five consecutive victories at Pakenham on April 24,
Sandown on May 24, Flemington on June 7, Flemington on June 21 and Caulfield on November 15.
That winning sequence came to an end when he was unplaced in the Supernova (1400m) at
Pakenham on December 13, but Taken bounced back to form in style on Saturday, beating
Merrigold (Gold Standard) by a length. “We were a bit perplexed after his performance in the
Supernova,” Price and Kent’s racing manager Tom Sheahan said. “We ran over him with the vet
and nothing was amiss. He’d run really well fresh before that, and it’s possible he was just
a little bit dull second-up. We did also throw him in at the deep end. We just took stock
after that, gave him a nice tick-over trial in between, and as you saw today, he’s back up
and firing. The race worked out perfectly. We had him dual-accepted in Sydney as well, but
this race came up light in numbers. The map looked super. We thought we’d be able to sit
outside the lead, travel and win. The 1700 metres is a new box that he’s just ticked today,
so that might open up a few more doors for him going forward.”
Sandpaper gets his career back on track
The Bjorn Baker-trained Sandpaper (6 g Snitzel - Smooth by Lonhro) snapped a losing streak
that stretched back to April with an impressive score in Saturday’s Carrington Stakes
(Listed, 1400m) at Randwick. Partnered by Nash Rawiller, the six-year-old defeated his
stablemate Thunderlips (Zoustar) by 0.5 lengths with a further 0.4 lengths back to Matcha
Latte (Maurice) in third. The winner was lining up off the back of a midfield effort in The
Buffering (1400m) at Eagle Farm earlier in the month and Baker's racing manager, Luke
Hilton, said connections had taken positives from that effort. "He was really tough in
Brisbane. He never got any peace. They were three-wide attacking him the whole way and I
thought he held his own and boxed on really well. Bjorn just gave him that bit of extra time
between runs when he came back, and he looked fantastic in the yard. His work during the
week was super and Nash gets on with him well."
Satin Summer earns black-type shot
Michael Freedman looks to have another star two-year-old in his arsenal in the shape of
Satin Summer (Written Tycoon) who made a brilliant debut in a 1000-metre contest at Randwick
on Saturday. The Belinda Bateman-homebred signalled she was a filly to follow with a
comfortable trial win at Rosehill on January 2 and she delivered on that promise with a
1.4-length defeat of Zambales (Pinatubo). Ciaron’s Star (I Am Invincible) finished a further
0.7 lengths adrift in third. Freedman said Satin Summer would now be given the opportunity
to add black type to her record. "I think she is a filly going places," the winning trainer
said. "We'd be keen to try to get some black type somewhere. As long as she pulls up alright
we'll have a think about it, but one of those fillies races [in Sydney] might be a nice
option or going to Melbourne for one of the fillies' Diamond Preludes in two weeks' time."
Satin Summer hails from a family stacked in juvenile precocity. She is out of Group
2-winning juvenile Satin Shoes (Flying Spur), the dam of Gimcrack Stakes (Listed, 1000m)
winner Satin Slipper (Pierro), who in turn produced another stakes-winning two-year-old in I
Am Unstoppable (I Am Invincible).
Gatsby’s back to winning ways
Gatsby’s (Snitzel), who had enough talent to win a Rosebud (Listed, 1100m) as a
three-year-old, got his career back on track with a victory in a Benchmark 78 (1200m) at
Randwick on Saturday. Having a second start for his new trainer Joe Pride, Gatsby’s began
his career with Chris Waller and he pulled away to beat Bundeena (Spirit Of Boom) by 0.9
lengths with Uzziah (Outreach) finishing a close-up third. "I came here today reasonably
confident because I thought the first-up run had a lot of merit from a wide gate," Pride
said. "There is a decent amount of improvement to come. He's a horse who has got a pretty
good record still. He has run around in some good races. It wasn't a matter of finding out
if he had any ability, it was just a matter of recapturing that. It was a good result." The
trainer said he would now look for another similar target. "It was just a matter of, has he
got the desire anymore? And I liked the way he was challenged in that last hundred metres or
so and he fought on really well," Pride continued. “I think he's a horse who hasn't
fulfilled his potential yet, so hopefully we can get a few more wins."
Two for Unusual Suspect
The Shaun Dwyer-trained Anemacore (6 g ex Saintly Ripa by Rip Van Winkle) scored his first
stakes win in Saturday’s Sunshine Coast Cup (Listed, 1400m) and in doing so provided Unusual
Suspect (Unusual Heat) with his second individual stakes winner. The gelding stayed on
strongly to beat Pereille (Fastnet Rock) by 1.2 lengths, while Chief Witness (Star Witness)
finished a further 0.3 lengths away in third. Anemacore is out of the winning mare Saintly
Ripa, who is a daughter of New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) winner
Saint Cecile (Pompeii Court). Unusual Suspect stood at Letham Stud and was withdrawn from
public stud duties in 2024.
Nine for Sessions
Sessions (Lonhro), a resident at Oakland Park Stud in Western Australia, chalked up his
ninth individual stakes winner when the Justine Erkelens-trained Jaz Session (5 m ex Jaz Me
Up by War Chant) won Saturday’s Scenic Blast Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Ascot. The
five-year-old mare was having her third consecutive start in stakes company and she finally
added winning black type to her record with a length win over Ice Pick Nick (Frosted). Cut
The Talk (Oratorio) finished third, another 0.4 lengths away. Sessions stood the 2025 season
for $9,900 (inc GST) and covered 45 mares.

Second for Ghaiyyath
The consistent Opera Ballo (4 c ex Dubai Opera by Invincible Spirit) proved to be too smart
for his five rivals in Friday’s Jebal Hatta (Gr 1, 1800m) at Meydan, notching his sixth win
in eight starts and in the process providing former Darley shuttler Ghaiyyath (Dubawi) with
his second elite-level winner. Ridden by William Buick for Charlie Appleby, the
Godolphin-raced colt ran out a two and a half length winner over Silawai (Dubawi) with
Holloway Boy (Ulysses) another length and a quarter away in third. Bred by Ecurie De
Cachene, Opera Ballo was a €600,000 purchase for connections at Arqana’s Deauville August
Yearling Sale. He is the second foal out of Dubai Opera (Invincible Spirit), who herself is
a sister to the Group 3 winner Lockwood. Ghaiyyath, who shuttled to Australia for four
seasons, now resides full-time at Kildangan Stud in Ireland, where he will stand the
upcoming northern hemisphere breeding season for a fee of €20,000 (approx. AU$34,300).
69 for Not This Time
Taylor Made stallion Not This Time (Giant’s Causeway) sired his 69th individual stakes
winner courtesy of the success by Six Speed (3 c ex Browse by Medaglia D’Oro) in Friday’s
UAE 2,000 Guineas (Gr 3, 1600m) at Meydan. The Bhupat Seemar-trained colt made virtually all
the running to beat favourite Devon Island (Practical Joke) by five lengths with Union
Security (Maximum Security) another quarter of a length away in third. Bought by current
connections for 220,000gns at last year’s Tattersalls Craven Breeze Up, Six Speed is out of
the winning Medaglia D’Oro (El Prado) mare Browse, who herself is a half-sister to the Grade
1 winner Imagining (Giant’s Causeway). Not This Time will stand the upcoming northern
hemisphere breeding season for a fee of US$250,000 (approx. AU$362,580).
UAE: Sunway ends long run of outs
Sunway (5 g Galiway - Kensea by Kendargent) snapped a losing run stretching back to his
victory in the 2023 Criterium International (Gr 1, 1600m) when just doing enough to take out
the Al Khail Trophy (Gr 3, 2800m) at Meydan on Friday. The David Menusier-trained gelding
was sent into a clear lead over 200 metres from home and had just enough in reserve to see
off Epic Poet (Lope De Vega) by a half-length. Favourite Meydaan (Frankel) finished a length
and a quarter further away in third.
HK: Badel excited to get back on board My Wish
Alexis Badel is looking forward to being reunited with My Wish (Flying Artie) when he gets
back on board the Mark Newnham-trained five-year-old in Sunday’s Stewards Cup (Gr 1, 1600m)
at Sha Tin. Badel believes the gelding, drawn in gate two, has progressed since the last
time he deputised – in October’s Sha Tin Trophy Handicap (Gr 2, 1600m) – and that last
season’s Classic Mile (Listed 1600m) winner could bounce back to form after a disappointing
effort when beaten favourite in the Hong Kong Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) over the same course and
distance last month. “It’s a horse that we know is very talented, and is certainly a better,
bigger horse than it used to be,” Badel said. “I rode him one time, and it was a victory, so
he left me with a very good feeling. I’m excited to ride him again. His preparation seems
good. He looks in very good shape. I would say he’s got a pretty good gate on the day, and
it’s interesting to see how he’s gonna go. It’s the highest level of racing in Hong Kong. It
is very competitive but I think everything is going smoothly for the horse, so it’ll have
its chance.”
HK: Fast Network freshened up for Centenary Sprint Cup
Fast Network (Credit: HKJC)
Sunday’s Centenary Sprint Cup (Gr 1, 1200m) at Sha Tin looms as a potential factor in
deciding the future campaign of Fast Network (Wrote), who clashes again with the reigning
Hong Kong Horse of the Year Ka Ying Rising (Shamexpress) in the first leg of the Hong Kong
Speed Series. Third behind Ka Ying Rising in last month’s Hong Kong Sprint (Gr 1, 1200m),
the Dennis Yip-trained Fast Network has been entered for the Al Quoz Sprint (Gr 1, 1200m) in
Dubai on March 28. “We will decide after his run this Sunday,” Yip said. “In fact, we
haven’t received an invitation yet and therefore our focus will be on the Centenary Sprint
Cup first.” Yip expects Fast Network will have another forward showing this Sunday. After
his third in the Hong Kong Sprint, the now five-year-old has spent most of his time in
Conghua. “He likes Conghua a lot,” Yip said. “All along he had been taken care of very well
by my assistant. This horse doesn’t need a lot of work. All I needed to do was give him an
easy trial and he would be very happy. He has been kept fresh in Conghua and is ready for
another challenge with Ka Ying Rising.”

Rubi’s Choice delivers Preview upset for Eurell

Rubi’s Choice (Rubick) delivered one of the more unexpected results among the juvenile ranks this
season when she claimed the Blue Diamond Fillies’ Preview (Gr 3, 1000m) at Caulfield on Saturday,
scoring on debut for Greg Eurell.
Sent out at $26 in a race dominated by more experienced fillies, the daughter of Rubick (Encosta De
Lago) was quietly ridden by Beau Mertens, tracking the speed and travelling comfortably before being
brought to the outside upon straightening.
Rubi's Choice(AUS)
2yo: (30Sep23 ch f)
Trainer: Greg Eurell
Owner: L M Krongold, P A C Schultz Et Al
Sire: Rubick
Dam: Redasun
Dam's Sire: Haradasun
The debutante showed a good turn of foot to reel in the leaders by the 100 metres and extended
further to score by 0.8 lengths over fellow first-starter I Am Aria (I Am Invincible), with Gin
Twist (Home Affairs) just another 0.1 lengths behind in third. The winning time of 58.38 seconds was
faster than the colts’ preview run earlier on the card.
Eurell said that Rubi’s Choice – despite having entered the race off jump-outs and without a
nomination for next month’s Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) – had shown enough at home to warrant
stepping her out at stakes level.
“She couldn’t have led into this better than she did – I felt she was super well and we were going
to get a really good guide on where she sits,” Eurell said.
Connections now face a late entry fee should they elect to continue down the Blue Diamond path. The
Blue Diamond Prelude (Gr 2, 1100m) for fillies comes up at Caulfield on February 7.
“She’s not nominated for the Diamond at this point, but if she pulls up well the natural progression
will be the Prelude, and then we’ll take it from there,” Eurell said. “It’ll be something that will
be very comfortable to sit down and have a good think about.”
“

progression will be the Prelude
Out of the winning Haradasun (Fusaichi Pegasus) mare Redasun, Rubi’s Choice comes from a family
Eurell knows well, having trained the mare and all of her progeny, including city winner Lincoln
Square (Rubick).
“Oh, tremendous, mare,” he said. “I mean, everything out of her just keeps winning, no matter who
she goes to and we had another two-year-old, Lincoln Square, who was a full-brother to this filly
and that recipe worked. So it was the right decision to go back and it's worked again.”
For Mertens, the win continued a strong return to riding after a farm accident that sidelined him
last weekend.
“It was a pretty serious wound to the face…they could’ve fixed me up a bit more than they did,”
Mertens joked. “I didn’t want to be out too long knowing there were good horses around. It’s a
pleasure to get straight back into it with some good winners.”
The race did not go to plan for heavy favourite Angel’s Fury (Harry Angel), who weakened sharply to
finish last of the nine runners, beaten almost 17 lengths.
Jockey Ethan Brown said the Ciaron Maher-trained filly never regained her confidence after an early
mishap.
“She may have lost a bit of confidence when she stumbled; she never regathered her action,” Brown
said. “She’s much better than that, and hopefully she comes through the run okay.”
Veterinary examination later revealed Angel’s Fury to be lame in the left fore.
With Saturday’s win, Rubi’s Choice became the 16th individual stakes winner for her sire Rubick. The
former Coolmore and later Swettenham Stud stallion was sold to continue his stud career in China
last year.
Options open for Alibaba after Caulfield victory
Alibaba (Alabama Express) provided a further twist to the Blue Diamond picture when he claimed
Saturday’s Blue Diamond Preview (Listed, 1000m) for colts and geldings at Caulfield, delivering
another result that left connections weighing up their next move.
Alibaba (Credit: Racing Photos)
Prepared by father-and-daughter training team Ken and Kasey Keys, the Alabama Express (Redoute’s
Choice) colt – like fillies’ Preview winner Rubi’s Choice – was not entered for the Blue Diamond
Stakes prior to Saturday, meaning a $55,000 late nomination fee would be required should connections
elect to stay on that path.
Sent out a $3.20 chance with race experience on his side after finishing third in the Merson Cooper
Stakes (Listed, 1000m) in November, Alibaba travelled strongly into the race under Craig Newitt and
hit the front at the 200 metres.
The colt laid in under pressure, causing interference to Invicto (I Am Invincible) and High Alert
(Street Boss), but was strong enough through the line to prevail by 0.4 lengths over Milsons Point
(Blue Point), whose Ciaron Maher-trained stablemate Invicto, finished a further 0.2 lengths back in
third. The unlucky High Alert worked home into fourth, beaten 0.85 lengths by the winner.
Kasey Keys said the colt’s maturity has been evident throughout the preparation.
“He has really settled down this prep,” Keys said. “He wasn't the easiest early on but he has been
gaining confidence every day. We've always known that he has the motor but it has just been a matter
of him putting it together.”
“
We've always known that he has the motor but it has just been a matter of him putting it together
Newitt said Alibaba handled the occasion well, while suggesting there is still improvement to come.
“He handled everything like an absolute professional,” the winning rider said. “He began well and
once he got a half-length in front he wandered around a little bit but next time I think if we ride
him a bit more conservative then you'll see his big finish.”
Purchased for $115,000 by his trainers at the 2025 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, the $2 million
Inglis Millennium (RL, 1100m) at Randwick on February 7 presents a viable alternative for Alibaba
should his connections decide not to pay the Blue Diamond late entry fee.
“We'll wait and see how he pulls up,” Keys said. “Obviously, with a two-year-old, you can't make too
many plans ahead and it's one race at a time, but ideally there's the option of heading up to Sydney
to the Millennium in a fortnight. So we'll just keep our options open and let him tell us.”
Bred by Yulong, Alibaba is out of the winning Written Tycoon (Iglesia) mare Rowsthorn and is a
brother to the stakes-placed Strideaway. Yulong will offer the yearling colt out of Rowsthorn by
Lucky Vega (Lope De Vega) at Inglis Easter as
Lot 52.
Rowsthorn produced another colt by Lucky Vega last spring and was then covered again by Alabama
Express, who notched his fifth individual stakes winner courtesy of Alibaba’s Caulfield success. The
son of Redoute’s Choice (Danehill) covered 227 mares at Yulong Stud in the spring at a fee of
$66,000 (inc GST).

NZ National Yearling Sale celebrates 100 years
Sir Tristram (Credit: Cambridge Stud)
Lloyd Jackson
ANZ News
The third and final installment of Lloyd Jackson’s series to mark a century of selling for New
Zealand’s auction house
The sires
Through until 1990 the history of the National Yearling Sale, the leading sires, especially by
average, had a profound influence on vendor statistics. Kotatanui Stud’s Limond (Desmond) was the
most popular at the early sales and Beau Pere (Son-In-Law) was prominent in the late 1930s, but only
stood in New Zealand for three seasons, yet made a huge impact as twice Champion Sire. He was sold
to Australia where he was Champion Sire three times and later sold again to stand in California.
Trelawney Stud’s Foxbridge (Foxlaw) was the clear sales leader until 1950 as he racked up 11
successive New Zealand Champion Sire titles. As a broodmare sire he added a further 11 titles, such
was his impact on the racing scene as well as the breeding scene.
In relation to the National Yearling Sales, Ra Ora Stud’s Gabador (Pharis) was the leading sire by
average three times during the mid 1950s. The next sire to lead the averages multiple times was
Kinross Stud’s Summertime (Precipitation) with four in succession. Between 1967 and 1976 Trelawney
Stud was again prominent due to six titles by Alcimedes (Alycidon).
Te Parae Stud’s Oncidium (Alcide) led back-to-back in 1974 and 1975, then returned again in 1977
when his last crop averaged four times the overall sale average.
Foxbridge
Phenomenal sire Zephyr Bay (Biscay) suffered fertility issues so his stock were rare meaning that
buyers were extra keen to secure one his yearlings. With so few, this led to his topping the sire
average in 1978, 1980 and 1982, his run interrupted by Zamazaan (Exbury) in 1979 and by Sovereign
Edition (Sovereign Path) in 1981.
From 1983 through to 1995 saw the complete and utter domination by Sir Tristram (Sir Ivor). Within
that period Imposing (Todman) headed him twice (1983 and 1984) while Australian-based Bletchingly
(Biscay) was the leader in 1991 and 1993. From that point is when the sire industry changed
dramatically as shuttle stallions and transporting yearlings from one country to another became
commonplace.
Despite the fact that Sir Tristram’s son Zabeel sired ten lots that fetched $1 million or more,
Zabeel topped the average just once, in 2011. Zabeel still holds the record as sire of the most
expensive lot ever sold at the National Sale. Don Eduardo (Zabeel), the Group 1 Australian Derby
winner, fetched $3.6 million at the 2000 sale. Zabeel had large numbers of yearlings through the
ring making it practically impossible to match high-profile sires such as Danehill (Danzig) and
Redoute’s Choice (Danehill) who may have been represented by as few as three lots.
Danehill led from 1997 until 2005 and he was superseded by his son Redoute’s Choice from 2006 until
2010. High Chaparral (Sadler’s Wells) led in 2013 but since 2014, except for 2021, every average was
led by Australian-based sires.
Fastnet Rock (Danehill) was successful from 2013 to 2015. Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) and I Am
Invincible (Invincible Spirit) took turns in 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 followed by American Pharoah
(Pioneerof The Nile) in 2020.
Waikato Stud’s Savabeel (Zabeel) suffered a similar fate to Zabeel, scoring the leader by average
title just once, in 2021. The last four years the topping of the averages went to The Autumn Sun
(Redoute’s Choice), Pierro (Lonhro), Snitzel and Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj).
One fantastic statistic deserves exposure. Sir Tristram sired 130 stakes winners in his astonishing
career. Zabeel surpassed his sire with 166 individual stakes winners while Zabeel’s son Savabeel has
reached a total of 154 stakes winners. New Zealand has never seen such a successful continuation of
lineage. It is happening before our eyes.
Mum’s the word
Every yearling has a sire and a dam and a number of dams made significant contributions to the
National Sale. From the Best Performers catalogue, three mares foaled two Best Performers each.
Expense (Paper Money) left the outstanding Defaulter (Defoe), the winner of 22 of his 28 starts.
Defaulter was named due to a hitch in the bidding at the 1937 sale. The colt was knocked down for
170gns but the buyer reneged, suggesting to the auctioneer that his bid was 165gns. The auctioneer
shook his head and put Defaulter back on the market. His premier wins were the Great Northern Derby
and in the same season, the Wellington Cup. Defaulter was never beaten at weight-for-age. From the
1942 sale emerged Expanse (Bulanshar) who, like his half-brother landed the Great Northern Derby and
later in his career, the Group 1 Auckland Cup.
Otetanui, like Expense, a daughter of Paper Money (Greenback), produced two Best Performers which
were sold at consecutive sales in 1944 and 1945. Bruce (Royal Chief) won 11 times in his native New
Zealand but saved his best effort for Sydney when taking out the Group 1 Cumberland Stakes, a race
now run as the Queen Elizabeth Stakes. Also by Royal Chief (Chief Ruler), Bruce’s brother Royal Tan
was successful in the Group 2 New Zealand Derby and as a five-year-old, the Group 1 Wellington Cup,
two of his 11 career wins.
Nereid (Neptune), herself a graduate of the 1947 National Sale, produced the 1952 sale’s Best
Performer, Fox Myth (Foxbridge) who caused a boilover in the Great Northern Derby at 50-1. As a
five-year-old he added the Wellington Cup in a career of ten wins. His half-brother, Best Performer
Sometime (Summertime), was the first purchase by Bart Cummings, from the 1960 National Sale.
Cummings trained him to win 22 races including the Group 1 Caulfield Cup and the Group 1 Caulfield
Stakes. In 1964 Cummings went back to the well and purchased the great Galilee (Alcimedes) whose dam
Galston (Balloch) was a half-sister to Fox Myth and Sometime.
Thoroughbred families also made their mark throughout the National Sale’s history. Early sales saw
highly sought-after yearlings from the great matriarch and New Zealand Hall of Fame inductee Eulogy
(Cicero), The same was true of her daughters and granddaughters. The Bart Cummings-trained Red
Handed (Le Filou), winner of the 1967 Melbourne Cup and a graduate of the 1964 sale, is a direct
descendant of Eulogy. Hong Kong star Beauty Generation (Road To Rock) who is also a direct
descendant of Eulogy.
Sunbride (Tai-Yang), the dam of three Group 1 winners, including 1954 Best Performer Straight Draw
(Faux Tirage), also foaled high-class runners Ilumquh (Sabaean) and General Command (Agricola). As
well as two New Zealand Broodmare of the Year titles, Sunbride was also inducted into the New
Zealand Racing Hall of Fame. She was at the centre of high-profile sales including the sale-topper
in 1963. Sunbride’s daughter Bridesmaid (Agricola) foaled Gold Pulse (Oncidium), the first lot to
sell for $100,000 in New Zealand, at the 1974 sale.
However, more recently, combining champions on the track and some of the highest prices through the
ring, the family that stands out is that of Eight Carat (Pieces Of Eight), another New Zealand
Racing Hall of Fame inductee and three times awarded the New Zealand Broodmare of the Year title.
The only mares inducted in the New Racing Hall of Fame are Eulogy, Sunbride and Eight Carat.
Five lots to sell for at least $1 million are direct descendants of Eight Carat, of which four
topped the sale. The Best Performer from the 1994 sale, Octagonal (Zabeel), is a son. The all-time
sales record holder, sold for $3.6 million in 2000, Don Eduardo (Zabeel), is a grandson. Antwerp
(Sir Tristram), who topped the sale in 1990, is also a grandson. Re track results, Eight Carat
foaled five Group 1 winners, namely: Diamond Lover (Sticks and Stones), Kaapstad (Sir Tristram),
Marquise (Gold and Ivory), Octagonal and Mouawad (Zabeel).
Another family to have a major impact on the sales is the “Belle” family, established by James and
Annie Sarten during the late 1930s when they bred Belle Fox (Foxbridge). In the intervening years
the family has produced 125 stakes winners, including 27 Group 1 winners. A recent headline-grabber
is Anamoe (Street Boss), a nine-time Group 1 winner whose first crop wowed last week’s Magic
Millions Yearling Sale.
Also quite recent is Melody Belle (Commands), the Best Performer from the 2016 National Sale. Bred
by the Sartens’ daughter Marie Leicester, Melody Belle recorded an astonishing 14 Group 1s. Two
Golden Slipper Stakes winners, Belle Du Jour (Dehere) and Dance Hero (Danzero), are members of the
amazing Belle family.
Cataloguing
The all-important sales catalogue has been presented in several formats. Until 1940 each lot was
assigned its own page including a grid pedigree followed by a list of relatives and their brief race
records. A paper shortage due to World War II rationing resulted in two lots per page, the pedigrees
written in essay style, a format which remained in place until 1969.
Selling changed markedly in 1964 with the introduction of a system proposed by Fasig-Tipton's
Humphrey Finney at the 1963 NZTBA annual general meeting. Instead of selling by drafts the catalogue
order was determined alphabetically according to each lot’s dam. This solved the problem of one day
being stronger than another as all lots were treated equally. The letter "F" was drawn for 1964 and
would advance five letters to "K" for 1965, and so on.
Major changes were instituted in 1970 for the first truly select sale. A panel of five were
responsible for the final catalogue comprising 443 of 678 lots nominated. Each catalogue page
featured the American-style tabulated stakes (black type) system.
Before compilation could start for the new format Pat O’Brien had to research 50 years of race
results to find the major or principal races which qualified as stakes or black-type races. It is
believed that New Zealand was the first country outside of North America to adopt this now universal
format which is largely unchanged except that in 1982 the page size grew with the inclusion of a
seven-line sire reference.
