Snitzel’s (Redoute’s Choice) sale-ring dominance came to the fore during the opening session of the New Zealand Bloodstock (NZB) Karaka Yearling Sale, with a colt by the late Arrowfield Stud stallion out of dual New Zealand Group 1 winner Amarelinha (Savabeel) topping trade on Sunday.

Knocked down late in the session, Cambridge Stud’s offering became the day’s headline act after a spirited two-way bidding duel, with the hammer eventually coming down in Chris Waller and Guy Mulcaster’s favour at $850,000, with the agent bidding from his customary position in the buyers’ box above the ring.

What's On

The colt is the second foal out of Te Akau’s 2020-21 New Zealand Bloodstock Filly of the Year Amarelinha, whose career featured victories in the New Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m), David and Karyn Ellis Classic (Gr 2, 2000m), Eight Carat Classic (Gr 2, 1600m) and Sunline Vase (Gr 3, 2100m). His extended family also includes Group 3-winning stallions Sweet Ride (Deep Field) and North Pacific (Brazen Beau), as well as triple Group 1 winner Metal Bender (Danasinga).

“He is a beautiful colt by champion sire Snitzel out of a New Zealand Bloodstock Filly of the Year, Amarelinha,” Mulcaster said. “I had a really good client who wanted to buy a good colt today, and he's hopefully going to buy some good fillies tomorrow, so fingers crossed.

“He was a horse we saw early, and he just stayed in my mind. We were lucky enough to take the man to see him today, and he behaved really well. Buying off Cambridge Stud, you can't go wrong.”

Reflecting on the day’s trade, Mulcaster said the market allowed buyers to be selective.

“We have been able to pick and choose what we've been buying today and we've done pretty well. I think we've got half a dozen so far, and we've got quite a long list, so we'll see how we go tomorrow.”

For Cambridge Stud, the result carried additional emotional significance, with Amarelinha - who they bought for $1.1 million on Gavelhouse Plus in 2022 - having died shortly after foaling this colt in November 2024.

Scott Calder said: “It is an awesome result for our stud, which equals the highest price we have achieved since Brendan and Jo bought Cambridge Stud from Sir Patrick [Hogan].

“By Snitzel from a Classic winner, the bidding was crazy but exciting. Some have asked if the Lindsays might keep him since he is the last foal from Amarelinha but they race fillies so they were happy to sell.”

Mulcaster and Waller were busy during the first session of trade in New Zealand, buying five lots for $1,710,000, an aggregate bettered only by Te Akau supremo David Ellis, who spent $3,150,000 yearlings.

At the close of trade, NZB reported 207 yearlings had found new homes at a clearance rate of 77 per cent. The day one aggregate finished at $38,197,500, a 43 per cent increase year-on-year, while the average rose 13 per cent to $184,529 and the median closed at $140,000, up 16.5 per cent on the same session 12 months ago.

NZB’s director and head Auctioneer Mike Kneebone summarised the first day of trade at the refreshed Book 1 sale.

"We've taken on a massive challenge of selling across long nine hour days. To take that risk, condensing the catalogue, it's very rewarding to see the Sale start so well.

We were lucky enough to take the man to see him today, and he behaved really well

Guy Mulcaster

"There are so many good horses spread across so many good stud farms. The first 20 horses were remarkable, and that flow continued all day.

"To have 19 horses make $400,000 or more on the first day, when last year there was 26 in total, it indicates how well the Sale is travelling and a very healthy middle market.

"As we know the second day is when everyone has their eye in. A lot of people came here today to buy a horse and they are still waiting.

"There has been great feedback about the refreshed format and having all the Book 2 horses on the ground early.

"It's also great to see both Australia and Hong Kong so active, and the Kiwis really stepping up. The clearance rate will continue to improve overnight, and we look forward to another strong day tomorrow."

Walls reinvests into familiar family

Momentum built rapidly through the middle of the session as bidding intensified, with a cluster of elite yearlings selling for more than $600,000 in a busy ten-minute stretch.

At the head of affairs was a colt by Waikato Stud’s emerging sire Super Seth (Dundeel). He is out of the unraced Almanzor (Wootton Bassett) mare Rozala, a daughter of 2009-10 New Zealand Champion 3YO Katie Lee (Pins), who famously became the first horse in history to complete the New Zealand 2,000 and 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) double in 2009.

Lot 93: Super Seth ex Rozala colt (Credit: NZB)

Rozala is a half-sister to the dam of Eskimo Prince Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) winner Public Attention (Written Tycoon).

The colt drew strong competition from many buyers, but KPW Bloodstock were able to secure him for $675,000 on behalf of Ron and Judy Wanless. Agent Kevin "Millie" Walls, of KPW Bloodstock, was buying to the family for the second time having secured the colt’s Hello Youmzain half-brother for $100,000 at last year’s sale.

“We buy on type, and we actually bought the half-brother last year,” Walls said. “He’s won a jump-out for us, so we know he goes nicely. This was an outstanding colt, one of the best-moving colts on the complex, and Ronnie put his hand up — I said no, but he kept going.”

We have been breeding from this line for generations now, and it seems every year or two another good one pops up. It’s been so good to us

Mark Baker

The colt was offered and bred by Hallmark Stud, and Mark Baker was delighted with the result.

“‘The family strikes again,” he told ANZ News. “We have been breeding from this line for generations now, and it seems every year or two another good one pops up. It’s been so good to us.

“Judging from the underbidders, he drew some serious interest and we’re over the moon. He was on the market at $100,000 because you never know with auctions. I was fairly sure he’d fly that, and I thought maybe $400,000.

“The colt loved being here. His best attribute is his brain, but he’s also a lovely mover — balanced and correct — and he has a beautiful head.”

Earlier in the day, Walls went to $300,000 to secure Lot 17, a filly by Cambridge Stud’s talented sire Sword Of State (Snitzel) out of Oceans Eight (Ocean Park). Her second dam, Ruud Van Slaats (Van Nistelrooy), was a dual Group 2 winner and produced three black-type performers.

“She’s a filly from another family I know well,” Walls said. “I thought she was lovely. Fillies from that family are hard to get, so Judy’s going to have a lot of fun racing her.”

Sword Of State has made a good start with his first runners this season. The son of Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) has sired three winners, headed by Debutant Stakes (Listed, 1000m) scorer Torture, who finished third in the Karaka Millions 2YO (RL, 1200m) and is being considered for Group 1 targets this season.

During the first session, the Cambridge Stud resident had nine yearlings sell for an aggregate of $1,905,000 at an average of $211,667.

Yulong go the distance for Grunt’s half-brother

Gai Waterhouse, Adrian Bott and Bruce Slade’s Kestrel Thoroughbreds made their presence felt on the opening day of Karaka, parting with $820,000 for three yearlings.

However their most expensive purchase came when they combined with Yulong for a $600,000 colt by Rich Hill’s one-time champion sire, Proisir (Choisir).

Lot 94: Proisir ex Ruqqaya colt (Credit: NZB)

Offered by Cherry and Brent Taylor’s Trelawney Stud, the colt out of Ruqqaya (Van Nistelrooy), making him a half-brother to Matriarch Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m) winner Zayydani (Savabeel) and Group 1 winner and emerging sire Grunt (O’Reilly), who stands at Yulong’s Nagambie farm.

Walls, who had secured the previous lot, was underbidder on the colt.

Yulong COO Sam Fairgray said the similarities to Grunt were immediately apparent.

“When we looked at him, we thought he was very similar to Grunt,” he said. “He’s a great-moving horse with a good physical, so I’m really pleased to be taking him home.”

With Grunt continuing to gain traction at stud, Fairgray said the colt could one day follow a similar path

He said: “Grunt is certainly working away. He’s had two Group 1 winners and is consistently getting winners, so hopefully his brother can be as good and, ideally, end up in the covering barn like Grunt.

“He’s a lovely, big-framed horse and a great mover, and you’re going to see him keep improving all the time. We’ll get him back to Australia and Gai and Adrian will train him — it’s exciting.”

Fresh off Well Written’s dominant Karaka Millions 3YO (RL, 1600m) triumph, Fairgray was upbeat about the filly’s future and said Australia is now on her agenda.

“She was super impressive, and Stephen Marsh thought she’d improved off her first run — and she certainly did that yesterday,” he said, “There were plenty of good judges who felt it was one of the most impressive performances in New Zealand for a long, long time.

“I definitely think she’ll go to Australia. There are plenty of options over there for her, so we’ll get through The Kiwi and then see whether Stephen wants to come over in late autumn to give her a bit of travelling experience.”

Ruqqaya’s yearlings who have come under the hammer at public auction have generated close to $2 million in receipts, including the $400,000 given by Lindsay Park and Cambridge Stud for her Hello Youmzain (Kodiac) colt at last year’s Inglis Easter Yearling Sale.

Out of Sayyida (Zabeel), Ruqqaya is a half-sister to multiple Group 1-winning champion and successful sire Ocean Park (Thorn Park), as well as the dam of Group 2 winners Excelida (Exceed And Excel) and Shanwah (Too Darn Hot).

The result was especially poignant for Trelawney, given the years invested in cultivating the family.

“Sayyida, the colt’s granddam, is still with us,” Brent Taylor told ANZ News. “She’s 25 and I say hello to her every day. Sayyida has been so important to Cherry and me — she was one of the first, if not the first, horses we raced, and it was an opportunity lost when she broke her leg as Derby favourite. She was a very talented mare.

“As a matron, she has been incredible through her own foals and her daughters. She has done us proud and is the most important mare in our stud’s history.”

Sayyida has been so important to Cherry and me — she was one of the first, if not the first, horses we raced

Brent Taylor

Having sold Grunt for $220,000 at the 2016 renewal of the sale, Taylor said he saw similarities between the half-brothers.

“The colt is almost a spitting image of Grunt,” he said. “He has thrived since arriving here and handled the pressure of the sale well. He’s pretty laid-back and took it all in his stride due to his nature. From the time he was born, he was a beautiful colt with fantastic movement.”

Trelawney enjoyed further success later in the session with two more yearlings from the same branch of the family.

A colt by Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj) out of Ruqqaya’s Group 2-winning daughter Zayydani (Savabeel) sold for $450,000 to Waterhouse and Bott Racing, Darby Racing and Kestrel Thoroughbreds. A few lots later, a filly by So You Think (High Chaparral) out of another of Ruqqaya’s daughters, Listed-placed Addison (Jimmy Choux), was purchased by Dabernig Racing and Pinhook Bloodstock International for $280,000.

Overall on day one, Trelawney sold nine yearlings for a total receipts of $2,560,000 at average of $284,444.

Anamoes prove popular

Yearlings from the debut crop of Darley’s new sire Anamoe continued to attract major interest, and the headline act of his three to sell during the opening session at Karaka was Cambridge Stud’s colt who was snapped up by Mulberry Racing for $650,000.

The youngster is out of Group 3 placegetter Save The Date (Savabeel) and comes from a family which includes multiple Group 1-winning globetrotter and sire Starcraft (Soviet Star), as well as Saturday’s Aotearoa Classic (Gr 3, 1600m) winner Tuxedo (Tivaci).

Lachlan Sheridan, the grandson of Mulberry owner and tech billionaire Michael Gregg, who manages the day-to-day running of the operation, said securing an Anamoe colt had been their main aim.

He’s also got a really good head on him, so we were pretty happy to push the boat out and secure him

Lachlan Sheridan

He said: “The sire was a pretty outstanding racehorse, and his progeny so far from the Magic Millions through to Karaka have all looked pretty good

“He was a nice, strong colt and we really liked him from the first inspection. He’s also got a really good head on him, so we were pretty happy to push the boat out and secure him. I know he was pretty well found in the market, but we were lucky enough to get him.”

Set to be trained by Brad Widdup, Sheridan indicated the colt would be given time.

“I think he’s a horse who looks like he’ll probably get out over a bit of ground. We’re not in the business of rushing them at all, so we’ll definitely take all the time he needs. He’ll get to the trials and then the races when he’s ready,” he said.

Having proved very popular at the Gold Coast, momentum behind Anamoe continued into Karaka. He had three yearlings sell for a gross of $1,425,000, while his average of $475,000 saw him top the sire leaderboard by that metric.

Anamoe’s next best result came when Ryan Fownes, who was acting on behalf of his father, Hong Kong-based trainer Caspar, secured Wentwood Grange’s colt for $500,000.

The younger is out of the unraced I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) mare Veronica Jane, a sister to New Zealand 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Media Sensation and a half-sister to Listed scorer On Display (Fastnet Rock).

“We only saw him on the grounds this morning, but he made an impression at first glance. The colt has a great temperament, which is necessary in Hong Kong,” Caspar Fownes told ANZ News. “He has plenty of scope.

“We can sometimes be a bit wary of first-season sires, but they sold exceptionally well on the Gold Coast, which gave us confidence to give him a go. He’s well worth his chance. We thought he might make around $350,000, but he’s such a nice colt that we kept going.”

Stand-out Savabeel goes for $550,000

Progeny by Waikato’s ten-time champion sire Savabeel (Zabeel) also proved highly sought after, with Lot 259 selling for $550,000 to Shijiazhuang Hongtao Horse Breeding.

The grey colt is the first foal out of British-bred mare Allemande (Sea The Moon), from a family rich in black type, including Group 1 performer Albaflora (Muhaarar).

NZB’s Alex Teng, speaking on behalf of the new owner, Mr Hongtao, said the colt had stood out early.

“I saw the colt at the Cambridge Stud parade and recommended him to our client, who races and breeds horses in China,” Teng said. “Mr Hongtao was here at the Ready To Run Sale last November and was keen to buy a Savabeel before it’s too late.

Lot 259: Savabeel ex Allemande colt (Credit: NZB)

“He looked solid and speedy and is a good-looking colt. It is anticipated that he will remain in New Zealand and have his early races here.”

Cambridge Stud’s Scott Calder, who consigned the colt, was pleased to see him head into an international programme.

“Alex has bought a lovely colt for his client, and we are delighted they chose one of ours,” Calder said. “He is a beautiful specimen, particularly when you consider he is a first foal. John Foote found the mare for us, so she is off to a wonderful start.”

The final session of Book 1 will get under way at 10am (local time).

Morning Briefing

Price and Kent jnr throw the Group 1 dice with Knobelas

Knobelas (Credit: Racing Photos)

Leading Victorian trainers Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr are poised to pay the late entry fee for the Herbie Dyke Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) with Knobelas (Belardo) following her luckless third in the Aotearoa Classic (Gr 3, 1600m) on Saturday. Price confirmed the $750,000 Te Rapa feature on February 7 is firmly on the agenda for the mare, but a $17,000 late nomination required. “It's a $750,000 Group 1. I have a very strong feeling that the mare has a strong 2000 metres in her. It was a very good run [on Saturday],” Price told Racing.com. “So, we will chase that and see how we go. I think we should continue on.” Raced by OTI Racing, Knobelas finished strongly into the placings in the Aotearoa Classic after encountering traffic in the straight. Price said rider Craig Williams felt the mare may have gone close to beating the winner Tuxedo (Tivaci) with a clearer run. “She's honest. She runs well every start. She is due for a little change of luck,” Price said. A Sydney autumn campaign remains under consideration. “If she trained on, she would be in for a Sydney autumn. She's a four-year-old mare,” Price said. “My farrier has done a good job with her feet. She has been beautifully sound and free.”

Group 1 options for Arkansaw Kid

Lindsay Park is weighing up a tilt at the BCD Sprint (Gr 1, 1400m) for Arkansaw Kid (Harry Angel) after his strong runner-up performance in Saturday's Sistema Railway (Gr 1, 1200m). Co-trainer Will Hayes said the stable had options following the effort, with Arkansaw Kid again proving competitive at the top-level. “We came over to avoid the Victorian horses, but we bumped into one [Jigsaw]. He beat us on his merits again,” Hayes told Racing.com. “We got a beautiful ride by Opie Bosson. Jigsaw was just too good.” Hayes confirmed Te Rapa’s 1400-metre Group 1, a race Lindsay Park won last year with Here To Shock (Shocking), is among the leading targets. “There's a couple of options. We can go to Te Rapa in two weeks. There's also races in Victoria.”

Four for St Mark’s Basilica

Coolmore shuttle sire St Mark’s Basilica (Siyouni) recorded his first southern hemisphere stakes winner and fourth overall when his son Aristopolos (2 c ex Flying Krupt by Krupt) produced a commanding victory in the Kevin Sharkie Elwick Stakes (Listed, 1100m) at Hobart on Sunday. Now three for three, the John Blacker-trained colt was sent out a warm favourite following two authoritative maiden victories in December and early January, and again looked a horse well above average in his first go in Listed company, drawing clear to score by 1.3 lengths under Erica Byrne Burke. Momentslikethese (Tiger Of Malay) was second, with Sovereign Dash (Hanseatic) another 2.7 lengths back in third. Bred by Armidale Stud, Aristopolos was purchased by his trainer for $60,000 at the 2025 Magic Millions Tasmania Yearling Sale. He is the second foal to race and second winner out of the stakes-placed mare Flying Krupt (Krupt). Already the sire of three first-crop stakes winners in the northern hemisphere, including Group 1-winning filly Diamond Necklace, St Mark’s Basilica continues to generate strong commercial interest in Australasia with his yearlings selling for up to $330,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale earlier this month. He is represented by two yearlings at Karaka Book 1, a filly out of Cerebellum (Fastnet Rock) (Lot 340) and a colt out of Girandola (Medaglia D’Oro) (Lot 450). He stood the 2025 southern hemisphere breeding season at a fee of $38,000 (inc GST).

Future History ready for Australia Day Cup assignment

Future History (Credit: HKJC)

After a testing road back to form, Future History (Showcasing) has rediscovered his winning touch and trainer Ciaron Maher is hopeful the import can extend his streak to four when he lines up on Australia Day.

The eight-year-old French-bred is currently enjoying his most productive period since his four-year-old season in France, when he won four of his seven starts and will look to continue his good form in Monday’s Australia Day Cup (Listed, 2400m) at Warwick Farm.

Future History has put together a strong summer campaign, scoring successive stakes victories in the Christmas Cup (Listed, 2400m) at Randwick, the Bagot Handicap (Listed, 2800m) at Flemington and the January Cup (Listed, 2000m) at Rosehill.

“He’s in a good spot and when he gets the right race shape, I don’t think the trip really matters,” Maher said of the $3.20 chance.

A rotation of jockeys have partnered the gelding through his recent wins, with Adam Hyeronimus aboard in the Christmas Cup, Ethan Brown taking the reins at Flemington and Nash Rawiller steering him to success at Rosehill.

Hyeronimus reunites with the gelding on Monday, having recorded a strong strike-rate when riding for the Maher stable in recent months.

Maher said Future History’s campaign took time to rebuild following his unplaced effort in the 2023 Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m).

“It took a long time for him to come good after that,” he said. “He was still fourth in a Champions Stakes at Flemington and those are proper races. He’s just a horse that’s fit, well and thriving now. This race was always a target. I ran him in the others because I thought he could win, and thankfully he has.

“He was an expensive enough horse when his connections bought him [140,000gns at the Tattersalls Autumn HIT Sale], so it’s pleasing to see him putting a few together.”

As of Sunday, Maher was undecided on the participation of stablemate and early favourite Saint George (Roaring Lion), with the Roy Higgins Quality (Gr 3, 2600m) at Flemington in March his longer-term objective.

Treasurethe Moment booked for jump-out

One of the standout fillies and mares of 2025 will make her first public appearance of the year this week when Treasurethe Moment (Alabama Express) resumes ahead of a short autumn feature-race campaign. Trainer Matt Laurie is delighted with the condition of the four-year-old, who capped a stellar 2024 spring with a dominant VRC Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m) victory before adding further elite-level success last autumn, including wins in the Vinery Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) and Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) at Randwick. Despite her ability to be competitive against open-class company, highlighted by her third placing in the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) and fourth in the Champions Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) last spring, Laurie was keen to give the mare an extended break following three demanding preparations. She is scheduled to jump out on Wednesday or Thursday. “We’re happy with her preparation so far,” Laurie said. “She’ll have another trial after this one leading into the Futurity Stakes [Gr 1, 1400m]. We gave her extra time in the paddock knowing she’s had three big campaigns. She comes to hand quickly anyway, and she seems happy, rejuvenated and keen. I’m really pleased she’s back. After those big preparations, some horses barely get three weeks in the paddock before having to come back, so we were mindful of that.” Treasurethe Moment is currently a $4 equal second favourite in futures markets for the All-Star Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) at Flemington on March 7. “My idea is to give her two, maybe three runs, then put her away again before having a really strong crack at the Cox Plate,” Laurie added.

Group 1 aspirations for Torture

Attention will now also turn to the autumn for talented two-year-old filly Torture (Sword Of State) following her placing in the Karaka Millions 2YO (RL, 1200m) at Ellerslie on Saturday. Co-trainer Will Hayes, who trains in partnership with his brothers JD and Ben, said a return to Victoria will allow the stable to map out a program. “Very proud of the young horse. It was a very credible third,” Hayes told Racing.com. “We will get her back to Victoria and form a plan for the autumn. She's very, very well-bred. The plan for us will be to continue to upgrade her pedigree. We will look at the Diamond and the Slippers because we do believe she has the ability to feature in those races.”

Monash target for Bazaball Rewarded

Bazaball Rewarded (Reward For Effort) could be on a path toward black-type company next preparation, with trainer Kelvin Southey identifying the Sir John Monash Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) at Caulfield as a potential winter target following the mare’s standout summer at Mornington. The four-year-old enjoyed a five-win campaign at her home track, highlighted by a tough victory under 61.5kg in the Mornington Marvel (1000m) in late December, earning connections a $100,000 bonus as the best‑performed horse at the track across the calendar year. “I knew going into the preparation that she was pretty smart,” Southey told Racing.com. “She’d been unlucky early and we felt she’d taken the next step.” Now rated 75, the mare is set to return in March and step out in metropolitan grade, with Southey confident she can make the transition. “I’m sure she’ll measure up to city company,” he said. “She broke the Mornington track record [over 1000 metres] second-up last time, so she’s got a bit going for her. If she can win a couple of city races, the Monash at Caulfield could be a realistic target. If she was up to that, we could give her a break and look at something later in the spring.”

First for Exaggerator

Elite Thoroughbreds’ Preakness Stakes (Gr 1, 9.5f) winner Exaggerator (Curlin) achieved his first Grade 1 winner as a sire when Skippylongstocking (7 h ex Twinkling by War Chant) landed Saturday’s Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes (Gr 1, 9f) at Gulfstream Park. Trained by Saffie Joseph Jr, the seven-year-old entire defeated defending champion and stablemate White Abarrio (Race Day) by a length and three quarters, with Full Serrano (Full Mast) another five and a half lengths back in third. Bred by Brushy Hill in Kentucky out of placed War Chant (Danzig) mare Twinkling, Skippylongstocking is a half-brother to three winners, including stakes winners Olivia Twist (Mshawish) and Moonlight Strike (Liam’s Map). Twinkling is herself a half-sister to stakes-placed pair Miss Maggie Girl (Malibu Moon) and Show The Way J (Forest Camp) from the family of 2020 Sandown Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m) winner Allibor (All To Hard). Exaggerator is standing for a fee of US$5,000 (approx. AU$7,248) in 2026.

US: Test Score passes Pegasus Turf test

Test Score (4 c Lookin At Lucky - Joy Of Learning by Kitten's Joy) made a winning return to racing when holding off stablemate One Stripe (One World) to land Saturday’s Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational Stakes (Gr 1, 9f) at Gulfstream Park. The Graham Motion-trained four-year-old was a three-time Graded stakes winner last season and finished third in the Hollywood Derby (Gr 1, 9f) last start after encountering traffic, but enjoyed a far smoother passage in his seasonal debut under Manny Franco. Settling fourth and saving ground throughout, Test Score travelled strongly before Franco angled him into clear running turning for home. He took over in the straight and showed determination late to fend off a wide-charging One Stripe by a neck. Almendares (Havana Grey) finished another length back in third. “When he made the front he waited a little, but when he felt the pressure again he gave me another gear,” Franco said. Motion said of the one-two result: “Both horses ran super. Manny gave Test Score the perfect trip.”

55 for Justify

Former Coolmore shuttler Justify (Scat Daddy) notched up his 55th individual stakes winner when Grand Job (5 m ex Sure Route by Ishiguru) took out Saturday’s Inside Information Stakes (Gr 2, 7f) at Gulfstream Park. Ridden by Junior Alvarado for trainer Bill Mott, the five-year-old mare defeated Sterling Silver (Cupid) by two and three-quarter lengths, with Claret Beret (Not This Time) the same margin further back in third. Bred by Fullbury, Grand Job was a US$105,000 purchase for agent Fergus Galvin at the 2022 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. She is out of the Listed-placed Sure Route (Ishiguru) whose other four foals to race are all winners, including Group 3 winners Divine Image (Scat Daddy) and Al Zanati (Dubawi). Justify will stand the upcoming northern hemisphere breeding season at Ashford Stud for a fee of $200,000 (approx.US$289,900). He has five remaining lots set to go through the ring at Karaka Book 1, after his first two sold for NZ$140,000 and NZ$260,000 to the respective bids of Busuttin Racing and Pearce Racing/Boomer Bloodstock.

Destino D'Oro grabs Grade 2 honours

Destino D’Oro (4 f Bolt D’Oro - Heart Of Destiny by Lion Heart) signalled an affinity with Gulfstream Park, charging home from well back to claim Saturday’s Pegasus World Cup Filly and Mare Turf Invitational Stakes (Gr 2, 8.5f). The Steve Landers Racing-owned filly improved her track record to two-from-two with the victory, her first at Group level against older mares. Prepared by Brad Cox, the daughter of Bolt D’Oro (Medaglia D'Oro) rediscovered her best form when landing the Tropical Park Oaks (Listed, 8.5f) in December and that late-closing effort was replicated on Saturday under Junior Alvarado as she swept down the outside to overhaul Crevalle D’Oro (Constitution) and Movin’ On Up (Accelerate), scoring by a half-length. “I knew she’d be coming from off the pace,” Alvarado said. “I couldn’t believe how much horse I had underneath me. She really let down strongly.” Cox said the mare had thrived since arriving in Florida. “She likes it down here,” he said. “She got a good setup and a good ride from Junior and it all worked out.”

52 for Gun Runner

Perfect Shot (5 m ex Meister Legend by Bodemeister) upset the field in Saturday’s Houston Ladies Classic Stakes (Gr 3, 8.5f) at Sam Houston and in the process gave Three Chimneys Farm sire Gun Runner (Candy Ride) his 52nd individual stakes winner. The Whisper Hill Farm mare also gave trainer Steve Asmussen his seventh win in the Grade 3 in the last eight years, defeating Standoutsensation (Take Charge Indy) by a half-length with Yes Tiz (Tiz The Law) another length back in third. "She's done extremely well since she came here with [assistant trainer] Pablo [Ocampo] and the crew," Amusses said. "She's a Gun Runner getting better with time, and she saved her best race for today." Perfect Shot initially sold for US$135,000 at the 2022 Keeneland January Horses Of All Ages Sale before being purchased by her owners Whisper Hill Farm for US$285,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Select Yearling Sale later that year. She was bred by Sierra Farm out of the Bodemeister (Empire Maker) mare Meister Legend. Gun Runner will stand for a fee of US$250,000 (approx. AU$362,375) in 2026.

96 for Quality Road

Lane’s End Farm sire Quality Road (Elusive Quality) was supplied his 96th individual stakes winner when the Bob Baffert-trained Nafisa (5 m ex Ithinkisawapudycat by Bluegrass Cat) proved too strong in the La Canada Stakes (Gr 3, 8.5f) at Santa Anita on Saturday. Ridden by Kazushi Kimura, the five-year-old settled second behind stablemate and favourite Brilliantly (Uncle Mo) before making her move approaching the home turn. Nafisa took control soon after straightening and found another gear, pulling clear to score by four and three-quarter lengths from Jane Austen (Tapit), with Brilliantly fading to third. Bred by Mt. Brilliant Farm and Ranch, Nafisa was purchased for US$1.8 million out of the Lane’s End draft at the 2022 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Select Yearling Sale and races in the colours of Zedan Racing Stables. She is out of the Listed-placed Bluegrass Cat (Storm Cat) mare Ithinkisawapudycat, herself a half-sister to Canadian champion two-year-old filly Spring In The Air (Spring At Last) and the dam of ten foals to race, all of them winners, including Grade 1 winner Sweet Loretta (Tapit) and stakes-placed pair Bridlewood Cat (Street Sense) and Bold Connection (Uncle Mo).

First Graded score for Layabout

Layabout (4 g Laoban - Batalla Sindical by Big Brown) confirmed his status as a rising staying prospect with a front-running victory in the William L. McKnight Stakes (Gr 3, 12f) at Gulfstream Park on Saturday. The Kevin Doyle-owned and Newbyth Stud homebred was ridden positively by David Egan, taking control early and rolling through solid fractions before finding enough late to repel Padiddle (Empire Maker) by a length and a quarter. Balnikhov (Adaay) finished third. Trained by Patrick Biancone, the four-year-old gelding showed continued improvement when stretched out in distance after a Listed victory over 8.5f last month. “He’s a fantastic horse,” Biancone said. “He’s much better when he’s in front. That’s why he wears the special goggles – he’s scared of the other horses and pretty much everything.”

Hayes eyes Sha Tin record after Ka Ying Rising’s historic Centenary romp

Ka Ying Rising (Credit: HKJC)

Moments after Ka Ying Rising (Shamexpress) forged into Hong Kong racing history with a record-equalling win in Sunday’s HK$13 million Centenary Sprint Cup (Gr 1, 1200m) at Sha Tin, trainer David Hayes predicted the world’s best sprinter could potentially break a course record at the track next month.

After the gelding’s effort to post a 17th consecutive victory – matching the winning streak of Silent Witness (El Moxie) from 2002 to 2005 – Hayes said he believes the superstar can threaten Sha Tin’s 1400-metre record of 1m 19.92s when he contests the HK$13 million Queen’s Silver Jubilee Cup (Gr 1, 1400m) on February 22.

“Last year, he worked a bit and won it [Queen’s Silver Jubilee Cup], and I think he’s a stronger, better horse this year,” Hayes said.

“I think he will handle the 1400 metres beautifully. I’m really excited for the next race. It’s another dimension for him. Last year, he nearly broke the course record at 1400 metres, and I think if the conditions are right, he can go close again.”

Ridden by Karis Teetan in last year’s Queen’s Silver Jubilee Cup in the absence of regular rider Zac Purton, who was injured, Ka Ying Rising clocked 1m 20.33s.

On Sunday, the five-year-old clocked 1m 07.66s (outside his own 1200-metre Sha Tin turf record of 1m 07.20s) after being allowed to coast to the line in defeating Helios Express (Toronado) by a length and a quarter, with Fast Network (Wrote) a further two lengths back.

Moderately away at the start, Ka Ying Rising quickly mustered speed to lead before Matthew Chadwick drove Beauty Waves (Starspangledbanner) to the front. Aware of Luke Ferraris and Lucky With You (Artie Schiller) lurking to his outside, Purton ensured Ka Ying Rising had clear running before unleashing the gelding from the 300 metres.

Exploding clear, and with the race at his mercy with a four-length lead, Purton eased up noticeably over the final 200 metres, clocking a modest 11.47s.

“The winning margin wasn’t probably the greatest, but it’s probably the most Zac has ever eased him down,” Hayes said. “So, he had a very easy last 200 metres and he dominated as the market suggested he would. [It’s] just nice to see him do it.”

Ka Ying Rising improved his record to 18 wins from 20 starts and is unbeaten since February 12, 2024 with career prize-money of HK$129.8 million (approx AU$24,129,820).

Celebrating his fourth win in the race after victories with Aerovelocity (Pins) (2016), Lucky Sweynesse (Sweynesse) (2023) and Ka Ying Rising last season, Purton said: “What can I say? We’ve said it all with the horse.

“I just had to make sure my bloke was in a rhythm. I’m surprised he ran the time he did because it didn’t feel like he ran that quick sort of mid-early in the race. He is just different class.

“I never thought I would see it [a record-equalling 17th win in a row], to be honest. It’s very, very rare what Silent Witness did and what Ka Ying has been able to do so far – and let’s hope he can keep going on with it.”

Summing up the mood of the six beaten jockeys, Helios Express’ rider Hugh Bowman said: “Another sound, consistent performance. The slower pace didn’t suit, neither does the fast pace when you’re chasing that horse.”

The Centenary Sprint Cup was the first leg of the Hong Kong Speed Series, which also includes the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Cup and the HK$24 million Chairman’s Sprint Prize (Gr 1, 1200m) on April 26. A HK$5 million bonus is on offer to the winner of all three legs.

Romantic Warrior launches Triple Crown bid with commanding Stewards’ Cup win

Romantic Warrior (Acclamation) vanquished the field to claim a first victory in the HK$13 million Stewards’ Cup (Gr 1, 1600m) at Sha Tin on Sunday, launching his bid for the Triple Crown in scintillating style.

A 12th Group 1 success for Romantic Warrior began to look like a foregone conclusion as early as 400 metres out, as a stock-still in the saddle James McDonald eased up alongside early leader Lucky Sweynesse (Sweynesse), with defending Stewards’ Cup champion Voyage Bubble (Deep Field) three-wide and treading water in his attempts to get after Danny Shum’s eight-year-old, and Mark Newnham’s My Wish (Flying Artie) stuck in traffic further back in the field.

After eye-balling Lucky Sweynesse for 100 metres, McDonald released the breaks and quickly sent Romantic Warrior clear.

Lucky Sweynesse boxed on gamely to finish second on his debut over the mile course, but the Acclamation (Royal Applause) gelding continued to pull away, passing the post a length and three quarters clear. Voyage Bubble was further back in third, with My Wish in a dead-heat for fourth with Sunlight Power (Capitalist) after a torrid run in transit.

Regular partner McDonald long ago ran out of superlatives to describe “the horse of a lifetime,” but was thrilled to claim the Stewards’ Cup at the second attempt.

“His demeanor, his courage, his will to win, it’s just in spades,” McDonald said. “It’s incredible. I say it every time, but when he steps out, it’s a privilege to ride such a horse of his calibre.

“He began really well, and I thought it was going to be pretty smoothly run. But a few picked up, which was quite surprising, and he was always in a nice rhythm.

“Gate seven out of nine gave us that opportunity to not force our hand and wait until it settled down, and I knew Voyage Bubble was three deep, and I wasn't going to give him a cart. He’s been unlucky in the past, but bumped into a very good horse. But he’s a warrior.”

Romantic Warrior, who last week was ranked seventh in the 2025 Longines World’s Best Racehorse Rankings, has now won 21 of his 28 starts. The Stewards’ Cup win took his record-extending prize-money haul to a staggering HK$247.38 million (approx. AU$45,987,942). Earlier this season, he triumphed for an unprecedented fourth time in the HK$40 million Hong Kong Cup (Gr 1, 2000m).

After campaigning overseas for much of the 2024/25 season, connections switched their focus to domestic domination in 2025/26, and the bid to match Voyage Bubble and River Verdon’s (Be My Native) feats in becoming the only horses to sweep the Triple Crown is now underway.

The next assignment is back at Romantic Warrior’s favoured trip in the HK$13 million Hong Kong Gold Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) on 1 March. The HK$13 million Standard Chartered Champions & Chater Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) completes the Triple Crown on May 24.

“I’m so proud of Romantic Warrior,” said Shum, expressing his delight at the performance. “He can handle 1600 [metres], 2000, even 2400 – he can handle any distance.

“We all know 2000 metres is his best trip, so no problem there. I’ll just keep him happy, keep him healthy – it’s a very easy job for me.”

McDonald, who regularly jets into Hong Kong from Australia to ride the champion, agreed it was a perfect way to launch the Triple Crown campaign.

“It’s a long way to go, but, yeah, the first one’s ticked off.”

Elsewhere in the card, David Hayes shared the day’s trainer honours with Francis Lui and moved to 30 wins for the season. In addition to Ka Ying Rising blitzing the field in the HK$13 million Centenary Sprint Cup, Hayes combined with Hugh Bowman as Turin Champions (Harry Angel) took the Class 4 Sound Print Handicap (1400m). He completed a treble when Positive Smile (Per Incanto) claimed the Class 4 Waikuku Handicap (1400m) under Keith Yeung.

McDonald struck on impressive debutant Gold Patch (Ardrossan) for Francis Lui in the card-opening Class 4 Peniaphobia Handicap (1000m). The three-year-old gelding got up when challenged late by Zac Purton on Sparkling Fellow (Street Boss).

Winning Wing (Preferment) maintained his remarkable record under Dylan Mo with perhaps the best win of his four from 15 starts in the Class 2 Ambitious Dragon Handicap (2000m). The Lui-trainee was forced to dig deep in the final stretch to grab a resilient win over Richard Kingscote-ridden Prestige Good (Sacred Falls).

Lui’s treble was sealed when Invincible Shield (I Am Invincible) scraped home in the Class 2 Able Friend Handicap (1200m) ridden by Vincent Ho.

Purton was the leading jockey with three wins. Before the Centenary Sprint Cup triumph, he took the Class 4 Beat The Clock Handicap (1200m) on Ricky Yiu’s Lucky Eight (Pride Of Dubai) and completed his trio of wins aboard Happy Index (I Am Invincible) in the Class 3 Aerovelocity Handicap (1200m) for Manfred Man.

Casper Fownes closed the card with a victory in the Class 3 Beauty Generation Handicap (1600m), with Flying Luck (Written Tycoon) securing a third Hong Kong win with Ellis Wong on board.

Hong Kong racing continues at Happy Valley on Wednesday, January 28.
