‘It’s a pedigree from heaven’ – Group 1 winner Lead Artist to shuttle to Arrowfield in 2026

Lead Artist (Credit: Edward Whitaker)

Arrowfield Stud are thrilled to have landed a coup with Britain’s Juddmonte Farm in shuttling a new stallion John Messara says is the most exciting sire prospect he’s seen on pedigree since the legendary Danehill (Danzig).

Lead Artist (Dubawi), the five-year-old winner of last year’s Lockinge Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) at Newbury, will begin standing at Arrowfield this spring under an intended long-term arrangement.

What's On

Following the miler trail blazed so spectacularly here in recent seasons by another British shuttling son of Dubawi (Dubai Millennium), Darley’s Too Darn Hot, Lead Artist will stand at a fee Messara promises will be “very attractive”. He’ll start serving mares at Juddmonte’s Banstead Manor Stud next month for £12,500 (AU$24,390).

Winning four of 11 starts to achieve a peak World Thoroughbred Ranking mark of 118 and a top Timeform mark of 124, Lead Artist packs a pedigree of rare quality and depth.

He has one of the world’s two most expensive stallions as his sire in the all-conquering Dubawi (Dubai Millennium).

And he has the other one as a damsire in the great Frankel (Galileo), who’s starting to echo his mighty stallion deeds with his broodmare sire results, with 22 stakes winners from 398 runners at 5.5 per cent.

Frankel also brings into Lead Artist’s pedigree not only his exalted sire Galileo but second and third sires Sadlers Wells and Northern Dancer (Nearctic), and his damsire, the breeding-shaping Danehill.

Two more outstanding progenitors are present in second damsire Oasis Dream (Green Desert) and his father.

Second dam Responsible (Oasis Dream) was unraced but produced a stakes winner in Lead Artist’s mother Obligate (Frankel), who also excelled at 1600 metres, winning two French black-type events over the trip.

But the third dam puts a huge cherry on top. She’s Hasili (Kahyasi), the 1991 throw who became one of the great blue hens of all time, Britain’s 2006 broodmare of the year and mother of no fewer than five elite winners from six Group 1 performers, with the odd one out among that half dozen being outstanding sire Dansili (Danehill).

Hansili’s descendants are responsible for no fewer than 59 Group 1 performances, which has helped stoke the enthusiasm for Lead Artist in the seasoned Messara - the man behind such Australian siring sensations as Redoute’s Choice (Danehill), Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) and Danehill himself.

“I haven’t been more excited about a stallion since Danehill,” Messara, who has been involved with some truly great stallions in his time, told ANZ News of Lead Artist.

“I haven’t seen a pedigree like this, with that level of pre-potency on both sides, anywhere.

“He’s by Dubawi, who’s one of the hottest stallions in the world, he’s out of a Frankel mare - it’s a pedigree from heaven.

“He’s an extraordinarily well-bred horse, from a pre-potent female and male line.

“You can get horses who are great but can’t pass on their genes. But there’s a history here of enormous pre-potency in this family. The fact he’s got a pedigree like that with antecedents - great horses who can pass on their genes - is very exciting.

“His dam’s side is littered with Group 1-producing stallions, which is a good sign of pre-potency. And you’ve got Dubawi, who stands for £350,000 ($A682,810), and he’s got sons at stud all around the place.

“Seldom do you get a horse with this level of pre-potency on both sides of the family. That gives the produce of this horse a good chance of being good. So I’m personally very excited.”

Messara added: “It’s a great family, and one that’s not often let out of Juddmonte’s grasp; they’ve kept all the females. But we’re accessing it via a male.”

Arrowfield approached Juddmonte in hope of standing Lead Artist, who’ll join Too Darn Hot as another son of Dubawi at stud in Australia, along with others including Benbatl and Henry Longfellow. Another son, Night Of Thunder, stood one season in Australia, where he has nine stakes winners from 70 runners at 12.85 per cent.

Messara despatched his trusted right hand man Jon Freyer to Britain to inspect Lead Artist, and says what met the eye matched the pedigree.

“Jon came back with a very positive report,” Messara said. “He’s just over 16 hands and is a lovely, well-balanced individual. Apart from his physical appearance and his race performance, the fact he’s got a family like his made us very eager to secure him.”

Good Morning Bloodstock: Super sires and a momentous matriarch – the talking points in Lockinge hero Lead Artist's pedigree

Messara said the fact Lead Artist was a British miler enhanced his allure.

“You’re unlikely to get a fast, short distance horse from Europe who’s going to be better than the Australian horses,” he said. “But the milers, that’s their little area, and when you get a top European miler you’ve got a tip top horse.

“A miler gives you good versatility. You can send shorter distance mares to him and get a sprinter, or mares with more stamina to get a trip. The good milers in Europe are horses who can satisfy both markets in terms of commerciality.

“He’s by the same sire as Too Darn Hot, who was a good miler. But nothing can compare to the pedigree Lead Artist has got.”

Messara said Arrowfield, who’ll announce Lead Artist’s initial fee after the Inglis Easter sale, would begin planning the types of mares to send to the stallion, pledging strong support from the farm’s own band.

“We’re going to have to work out what the best pedigrees will be for him in terms of mares,” he said. “It’s Mr. Prospector on his sire’s side as the fourth sire. We haven’t got a huge amount of Mr. Prospector down here, but still, Too Darn Hot is working pretty well down here.

“We’ll support him well ourselves. And with the price we have in mind he’ll be very commercially priced.

“I think he’ll be a very good commercial horse as well as turning into something pretty special as a stallion.”

The deal reignites Arrowfield’s history with global powerhouse Juddmonte, which includes the purchase of the great Danehill and his late 1980s predecessor Belloto (Mr. Prospector). Their last piece of business involved shuttling the star-crossed Zafonic (Gone West) to Australia in 2002.

“We’re delighted to be doing business with Juddmonte again. We have some nice history,” Messara said.

“We approached Juddmonte and got the conversation going, and we were of course delighted to secure Lead Artist in the end.

“There hasn’t been a time-frame set on his shuttling, but it’s a long-term situation. They take a long-term view on their breeding programs, and so do we.”

Juddmonte’s chief executive Douglas Erskine Crum said the famed operation was excited about the opportunity to stand Lead Artist in Australia.

John Messara

"Arrowfield’s success with shuttling stallions along with a proven track record for producing champion sires such as Danehill, Redoute’s Choice and Snitzel will provide Lead Artist with the perfect platform to start his southern hemisphere career,” Erskine Crum said in an Arrowfield statement.

"Australian breeders should expect a strong, well-balanced horse with a wonderful outlook, physically very difficult to fault with a good, easy action.

“In terms of pedigree, this regally bred Group 1-winning miler comes from the family of outstanding blue hen mare Hasili, whose descendants are responsible for a staggering 59 Group 1 performances.

"Lead Artist possesses all the credentials to continue the significant influence of the Dubawi line in Australia."

Trained by John and Thady Gosden, Lead Artist raced exclusively in stakes company after posting his first win at his second start by almost five lengths over a mile as a spring three-year-old at York.

Two starts later he won Goodwood’s Thoroughbred Stakes (Gr 3, 1m). His three-year-old campaign concluded in the autumn with another black type victory in Newmarket’s Darley Stakes (Gr 3, 1m 1f).

He returned in 2025 with the goal of adding an elite title, and achieved it with a stirring fightback to claim a strong edition of the Lockinge. Three Guineas winners, Rosallion (Blue Point), Notable Speech (Dubawi) and Fallen Angel (Too Darn Hot) finished behind him.

Notable other Lockinge winners include leading sires Kris (Sharpen Up), Cape Cross (Green Desert) and the Night Of Thunder and Frankel.

John Gosden described Lead Artist at various times as a horse "with so much natural speed" and "a great demeanour" who "holds his condition extremely well" and excels on "summer fast ground" - qualities Arrowfield and Juddmonte believe will serve him well in Australia.

Morning Briefing

Australia

First for Wild Ruler

Wild Ruler (Credit: Newgate)

Newgate Farm’s first-season sire Wild Ruler (Snitzel) registered his first winner on Thursday when Savage Look (2 g ex Katie's Eyes, by Leroidesanimaux) won impressively on debut at Scone. Ridden by Reece Jones for Rodney Northam, the colt flashed home in fine style to score by 0.1 lengths over Better By Far (Farnan), with Sambuca Sky (Portland Sky) a further two lengths behind in third. Bred by S F Bloodstock, the gelding was a $130,000 buy for Alma Vale Thoroughbreds from Newgate’s 2024 Magic Millions National Weanling Sale consignment. He was then retained to race by Alma Vale after being passed in at the 2025 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, when failing to meet his $200,000 reserve. Savage Look is the sixth foal and fourth winner from dual US stakes winner Katie’s Eyes (Leroidesanimaux), herself a half-sister to stakes performers Margie Is Livid (Temple City) and Happy Constitution (Constitution). Katie’s Eyes was covered by Ozzmosis (Zoustar) last season. Wild Ruler stood at Newgate Farm for $27,500 (inc GST) in 2025.

Eviction Notice eyes Canonbury Stakes redemption

Eviction Notice (Credit: Sportpix)

Saturday’s Canonbury Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) at Rosehill will provide an early carnival measure for the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained juvenile Eviction Notice (Stay Inside) as he looks to rebound from a below-par spring debut. The colt created a strong impression when winning at the first official two-year-old trials of the season, which saw him start prominently in the market for the Breeders’ Plate (Gr 3, 1000m). However, after working early to find the lead, he weakened late and finished well back. Eviction Notice was subsequently sent to the paddock, and Bott has been pleased with his development ahead of his return. "He looks fantastic and I can't fault him," Bott said. "He started fancied in the Breeders' Plate and things didn't go to plan, but he seems in good order." Saturday will see Eviction Notice meet Breeders’ Plate winner Incognito (Stay Inside) again, with the Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) now just two months away. Bott said the race will offer a valuable guide as to where the colt sits among the leading juveniles. "There are going to be some quality horses in that race so it will give us a good line on where he's at," he said. "He’s come back really well. He's just got to step up and improve on what he did first campaign." The stable will also be represented in the Widden Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) by filly Miss Chanel (Tagaloa), who finished third on debut at Rosehill a fortnight ago on a rain-affected surface. "She will improve nicely off the back of that and having had that experience," Bott said. "She will be better on top of the ground too."

Snowden confident Pearl Of Dubai ready for Widden Stakes

Peter Snowden is optimistic about the return of well-bred filly Pearl Of Dubai (Wootton Bassett), who resumes in Saturday’s Widden Stakes at Rosehill. The juvenile impressed during her debut campaign, finishing second in the Kirkham Plate (1000m) in October despite having come straight from the breakers into full work. "She has always shown a bit in her work, and that was her very first preparation," Snowden said. "She came from the breakers straight in and went all the way to a trial and all the way to the races, which was terrific." Pearl Of Dubai boasts an outstanding pedigree as a Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj) half-sister to dual Group 1 winner and leading sire Pride Of Dubai (Street Cry), and Snowden is keen to see her add black type to enhance her future value. The filly has trialled twice ahead of her return, most recently closing well for third at Warwick Farm. Snowden expects her to settle closer from barrier three. "She's got good gate speed, so from that gate on Saturday she will be in the first four comfortably," he said. "She’s a beautiful type and has such a good pedigree, you've got to give them the opportunity. She works well, she's trialled well. Her first run was great so we will see what she can do against some pretty good opposition. We'll get a bit more idea about how she’s going after Saturday."

Berry cautious ahead of Enriched return

Enriched (Credit: Sportpix)

Tommy Berry says Enriched (I Am Invincible) will need to show he has returned in the same form that made him one of last autumn’s leading three-year-old sprinters when he resumes at Rosehill on Saturday. The Michael Freedman-trained entire beat all bar Autumn Glow (The Autumn Sun) in the Darby Munro Stakes (Listed, 1200m) in March before going on to win the Arrowfield 3YO Sprint (Gr 2, 1200m) in April. But after not progressing as hoped early this season, Enriched was kept out of spring racing and given more time. "Last autumn he was very good then he just didn't come up last preparation, so Michael tipped him out and gave him a bit more time," Berry said. "This preparation he’s going really well, and his trials have been nice. There is still a question mark as to whether he’s going as well as when he won the Arrowfield, but Saturday is going to be a great chance for him to prove that. We're going into the race confident he’s going well but we still want to see him come back and do it." Enriched is a $5 chance for the JRA Plate (Gr 3, 1200m), a race in which seven of the eight runners are quoted at single-figure odds. Berry expects the tempo to allow Enriched the chance to settle and finish off. "There looks to be good speed in the race with Zarastro, Willaidow and Fire Star. He is going to get his chance to have a cruisy run and hopefully come off the back of them and show how he's come back," he said.

Take two for Jadzia

A cooler day at Caulfield will see two-year-old Jadzia (Ole Kirk) make her debut a week later than anticipated. Grahame Begg elected to scratch the filly from a division of the Blue Diamond Preview (Gr 3, 1000m) at Caulfield last Saturday with the extreme heat in the back of his mind. With cooler temperatures on Saturday, Jadzia will instead line up in the Chairman's Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m). "I wasn't 100 per cent happy with her on race morning last week, so I bit the bullet and pulled her out," Begg said. "Unless they're 110 per cent right, they just can't go to the races. There was the option to run this Saturday, which we've taken, so it was an easy call, especially with the temperature it was going to be [last week]. It wasn't ideal running on a firming track on a very hot day; you don't know how they’ll come out of it. Plus, she was coming off a nine-day turnaround from her trial at Sandown, so the extra week may be a blessing in disguise." Begg said Jadzia had made tremendous progress since joining his stable last month. "She didn't come to us until late as she was a Magic Millions winter yearling purchase and was spelled and broken up in Queensland," Begg said. "It was December by the time we got her. She has put her hand up to say she's ready and we go with them if they want to be two-year-olds." The trainer said he would be guided by Jadzia's performance on Saturday as to whether the filly progresses to the Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Caulfield on February 21.

Wrote To Arataki set for fourth successive Geoffrey Bellmaine

Seven-year-old mare Wrote To Arataki (Wrote) will return to a familiar setting when she lines up in the Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Caulfield, contesting the race for a fourth successive year. Matthew Williams is pleased with how his stable star has returned to work following a decent spell and is hopeful she can add to her already impressive record in the race. Wrote To Arataki claimed the event in 2023 at Sandown-Hillside, carrying 56kg with Jamie Melham aboard. She returned in 2024, finishing fourth at Caulfield before finishing third in 2025 behind She’s Bulletproof (Shooting To Win) at Sandown-Lakeside. Williams is encouraged by how Wrote To Arataki, who recently won a Camperdown jump-out, has returned to work. “I would say she’s quite forward. The 1200 metres is always a little bit short of her pet trip but she won’t be lacking fitness,” the trainer told Racing.com. “We’re very happy with her as she’s lovely and sound. She’s drawn a good gate [in two] and the plan will be to position up in the first five and from there she will give a good sight.”

Mornington trainer chases third Bellmaine win

The Michael Mehegan-trained Bossy Benita (So You Think) will aim to add some black type to her record when she takes her chance in Saturday’s Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes at Caulfield. The daughter of So You Think (High Chaparral) put a scare through the Mehegan stable last year when she dumped her rider at trackwork and went on a path of destruction that could have resulted in her racing career being curtailed. Luckily, she emerged from the incident unscathed and she will be having her first start this weekend since her unplaced performance in the Let's Elope Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Flemington last September. "We had her in really good condition and form before the Let's Elope, but she had a track accident where she lost the rider," Mehegan said. "She went through three or four different parts of running rail and we were lucky she survived. I thought she was going to kill herself, she was that bad, she was in complete flight mode. We trialled her after that and we pushed on to the Let's Elope, but she just wasn't right. At that level you need to be excellent and she wasn't. She was cooked by then and in hindsight I never should have run her, but she was airborne before that. We gave her a good spell, I think she had six weeks in the paddock, and she's had three jump-outs, normally I just give her two. She trialled against Jigsaw, and finished second to him but wasn't quite ready after that, so I decided to give her a third and she won quite impressively, which showed us she was back to her best."

Jolly pair to tackle delayed Durbridge Stakes

Richard and Chantelle Jolly are preparing to launch a two-pronged attack on the rescheduled Durbridge Stakes (Listed, 1100m) at Morphettville on Saturday. The trainers will saddle Klabel (Vadamos) and Great Maximus (Magnus) in the Listed contest, which was pushed back a week due to the extreme temperatures in Adelaide. Jolly said Klabel was the pick of the pair after winning his first race since August 2024 when successful in the Christmas Handicap (Listed, 1200m) at Morphettville on December 27. Klabel had been a model of consistency across tracks in both Victoria and South Australia, but could not get across the line in first place until last time out. "He's pretty capable. All his runs in Melbourne last campaign were good," Richard Jolly said. "He's a 99-rater, which is a hard mark for him. Coming back to Adelaide probably suits him a bit better and this race on Saturday is probably the same depth as the Christmas Handicap. He's a very honest horse and should be hard to beat." Jolly conceded Great Maximus was possibly not as well suited under the weight-for-age conditions as his stablemate. "He probably needs another run and he's in that rating band where he's a bit hard to place," he said. "Plus, he's more effective on rain-affected ground, but you can't spell these horses until winter time. He's got to come in and have a summer prep to get ready for winter. He's pretty capable on his day, but at weight-for-age, over 1100 metres, it's not going to be ideal."

Exciting unraced prospects win Rosehill trials

Short Sea pictured as a yearling (Credit: Magic Millions)

A pair of exciting unraced prospects won their prospective trials at Rosehill on Thursday morning.

Heat four was taken out by the Peter Snowden-trained Short Sea, a colt by Ole Kirk (Written Tycoon), who showed maturity beyond his years to beat his elders in a 1030-metre trial. Ridden by Sam Clipperton, the colt crossed the line 0.4 lengths ahead of Ourgan (Yes Yes Yes), while Quadria (American Pharoah) finished a further length away in third.

A $170,000 pickup for his trainer from the North Bloodstock draft at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale last year, the youngster is out of dual-winning mare Steamboat Sally (Snitzel), herself a three-quarter sister to Gunnison (Not A Single Doubt), with the pair out of Group 2 scorer Colorado Claire (Hussonet).

The John O’Shea and Tom Charlton camp look to have a smart filly on their hands in the shape of Coco Affair, an unraced daughter of Coolmore’s first-season sire Home Affairs (I Am Invincible) who landed her second trial win over 900 metres.

The filly defeated Chris Waller’s $500,000 Magic Millions graduate Campione D’Italia (Snitzel) by 0.1 lengths, while his stablemate, Siumai Knight (Toronado), was another 5.2 lengths away in third.

Coco Affair was bought by her trainer and James Bester for $260,000 from the Mill Park Stud draft at last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. She is out of three-time winner Cocoa Doll (More Than Ready), a half-sister to stakes winner Modern Wonder (Snitzel) and Group 2 winner Away Game (Snitzel), who landed the 2020 Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m).

Mill Park Stud will offer the filly’s Zoustar (Northern Meteor) half-brother as Lot 562 at the Inglis Premier Sale, which gets under way in Melbourne on March 1.

Meanwhile, the Brad Widdup-trained Tenenbaum (Snitzel) who finished sixth in the Max Lees Classic (900m) on his debut in November, also landed his trial on Thursday morning, beating Attorney General (Snitzel) by 0.8 lengths.

Tenenbaum is a brother to Hong Kong Derby (2000m) winner Cap Ferret, and another full-brother will be offered by Arrowfield at March’s Inglis Easter Yearling Sale. He is catalogued as Lot 241.

The final juvenile heat of the morning was taken out by the Terry Croft-trained Kirkham Plate (1000m) winner Thrill Hunter (Ole Kirk), who finished tenth in the Golden Gift (1100m). The filly, who was a $280,000 at the Easter sale, looked impressive when beating Lorax (Zoustar) by 0.8 lengths.

Treasurethe Moment on track for Futurity Stakes return

Matt Laurie’s star filly Treasurethe Moment (Alabama Express) will kick off her preparation in the Futurity Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Caulfield on February 21 before heading to the All-Star Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) at Flemington on March 7. The daughter of Alabama Express (Redoute’s Choice) reappeared in the opening 1000-metre heat at the Heath track, her first public outing since finishing fourth behind Ceolwulf (Tavistock) in the Champions Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) on November 8. With Damian Lane back aboard, the mare began smartly, travelled comfortably and cruised to the line, finishing third. “I was really happy. Obviously, the horse out in front [Nervous Witness] is very quick,” Laurie told Racing.com. “I love the way she left the gates… the feedback from Damian was really good, so very happy with that. She’ll have one more trial and then we’ll be away. She’ll pretty much have a replica lead-in to what she had for the Memsie. I’d like to keep her here for The All-Star Mile… after that, we’ll just play it by ear.” Stablemate and Inglis Sires’ (Gr 1, 1400m) winner Vinrock (I Am Invincible) also stepped out, finishing fourth in the second heat of the morning. Laurie said the colt is tracking well but is several weeks behind his star stablemate. “I thought he was fine… he was always going to be a bit soft late,” he said. “He’s going to need a fair bit of work thrown at him… in an ideal world, he’s tackling some races perhaps in Sydney.”

Douglas excited for Giga Kick’s Lightning Stakes return

Clayton Douglas is looking forward to seeing Giga Kick (Scissor Kick) back at Flemington when the star sprinter resumes in the Lightning Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) on February 14. It will be the gelding’s first run since winning the Champions Sprint (Gr 1, 1200m) at Flemington in November. He trialled at Caulfield Heath on Thursday with Ethan Brown aboard, finishing a close second to My Gladiola (I Am Invincible), and Douglas was pleased with what he saw. "It was nice work and he looked fresh and well in himself," Douglas said. "Brownie gave him a good report. He said he began good, travelled nice and strong and finished off lovely. That will bring him on. It's two weeks to the Lightning, which should be perfect timing. He won first-up last prep off one jump-out and we're going in with the same idea. He's moving terrific. They'll know he's in the race first-up." Giga Kick had just two runs last campaign, winning the Schillaci Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) before taking out the Champions Sprint. Plans to travel to Perth were shelved to protect his autumn preparation. "Timing wise it didn't work," Douglas said. "I had to get to Perth and then get back. We liked the idea of getting there, but he performed so well in his two runs that I wanted to give him a bit of a breather and aim him up at a nice autumn. The autumn maps really well. A weight-for-age sprinter like him, he can finish off his preparation at 1400 metres, which he's won at before. We've had a really nice preparation so far." Douglas is considering Sydney targets after the Lightning, including the Challenge Stakes (Gr 2, 1000m) and T J Smith Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m), before a likely autumn finale in the All-Aged Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m). "This year it maps that he can be in much earlier," Douglas said. "That gives us more options for the spring."

Return To Conquer retired

Return To Conquer (Credit: Race Images)

Unbeaten Group 1-winning two-year-old Return To Conquer (Snitzel) has been retired from racing and is set to embark on a stud career.

Purchased by Te Akau principal David Ellis for $1.3 million from Blue Gum Farm’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale draft, Return To Conquer remained unbeaten in four stakes appearances.

His perfect record boasts victories in the Counties Challenge Stakes (Listed, 1100m), Colin Jillings 2YO Classic (Gr 3, 1200m), Matamata Slipper (Gr 3, 1200m) and a highlight win in the Sistema Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m).

“We thought he was the best Snitzel colt in the sale when we bought him,” Ellis said. “He turned out to be a terrific colt. Unfortunately, he’s not been able to race at three, but he’s by the right sire and has the right pedigree to make a stallion. There are a few parties interested in standing him.” Co-trainer Mark Walker praised the colt’s talent and professionalism.

“It was the first time in my 30-year career I started a two-year-old in a Listed race,” said Walker, who trains in partnership with Sam Bergerson.

“Every one of his starts were in stakes races and to win them all shows the calibre of horse he was. We thought he was well up to Melbourne class, hence we took him to our stable at Cranbourne, but he injured himself in his first jump-out in the spring.

“He has an unbelievable temperament and is very clean-winded. I think he’ll make a high-class sire; he reminds me of Sword Of State.”

Return To Conquer is out of unraced Lonhro (Octagonal) mare Vaujany – a sister to dual stakes winner Ghisoni (Lohnro).

The colt’s granddam is three-time stakes winner and Group 1 placegetter Portillo (Red Ransom), making him a relative of last season’s Creswick Stakes (Listed, 1200m) winner Renosu (Exceed and Excel) and Group 3 scorer Larkspur Run (Shamardal).

Alottago ready to go in Gore Guineas

Alottago (Credit: Race Images)

Lance Robinson will trek south to Gore with just the one runner on Sunday, but he is hopeful that will be enough to bring home a winner’s cheque. Alottago (Tagaloa) will be seeking to bounce back in the Gore Guineas (Listed, 1335m) following his seventh placing in the New Zealand 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) in November, the only blemish on his seven-start career record. Robinson said the Heavy9 conditions were not to his gelding’s liking on that day and he was proud of his tenacity. “His run in the Guineas was outstanding,” Robinson said. “He drew two and he was down in the worst of the ground in a mile race. To his credit he pressed on really well. We were really proud of him that day and we gave him a nice break after and he has come back really well.” Alottago was runner-up in a 1200-metre trial at Ashburton earlier this month and pleased Robinson with an exhibition gallop last week. “We are really happy with him. He had a really nice trial a fortnight ago at Ashburton,” the trainer said. “We took him to Riccarton the other day, where he had an exhibition gallop between races and we were really happy with that. He’s as forward as we can have him fresh-up. As long as it doesn’t get too wet down here, that’s my only concern. If the track got really wet I would probably pull him. The forecast is good until Monday, so hopefully that rain holds off and we can get a good track, and he should run really well.”

Weight relief helps chances of Noble’s Jaarffi

Taking on the reigning New Zealand Horse of the Year at Ellerslie is a challenge with benefits for the Lance Noble-prepared Jaarffi (Iffraaj). Multiple Group 1 winner El Vencedor (Shocking) will oppose the in-form mare in Saturday’s Fulton Family Stakes (Listed, 1500m) and has taken a degree of weight off her Karaka trainer’s mind. “Being a handicap isn’t ideal, but it’s nice to see El Vencedor pay up, so instead of carrying 60 kilos or thereabouts, she’ll carry 58.5 kilos,” Noble said. “That’s a plus and I’m really happy with her.” The Cambridge Stud-bred and owned Jaarffi finished a last-start runner-up in the Zabeel Classic (Gr 1, 2000m) and the consistent mare has risen to be the fifth highest ranked New Zealand-trained horse on a rating of 109. “She’s never won a black-type race and for her consistency, she’s gone up the ratings to a point where El Vencedor, who’s won 13 races, isn’t that far ahead of her,” Noble said. “It’s just the way the handicap system works, she’s been penalised for not winning but she’s only three points below El Vencedor [four Group 1 wins] and Legarto [three]. She’s yet to win a black-type race and hopefully we can fix that on Saturday.” All going well, Jaarffi will continue on a feature event path after the weekend. “We decided not to go for the Herbie Dyke Stakes [Gr 1, 2000m], this race leads nicely into the Otaki Maori WFA and then into the Bonecrusher,” Noble said.

Dual Cup representation for Temperton

Royal Flower (Credit: Race Images)

Royal Flower (Proisir) will attempt to add a second staying trophy to her resume when she lines up in Saturday’s Wellington Cup (Gr 3, 3200m) at Trentham. The mare already has a hometown cup victory to her name, having won the Foxton Cup (2100m) last year, and has continued to build towards the Wellington feature with a fourth in the Manawatu Cup (Gr 3, 2100m) before a strong runner-up effort behind Rosso in the Trentham Stakes (Gr 3, 2100m) a fortnight ago. Breeder-owner-trainer Gail Temperton was pleased with that performance and said the mare has continued to progress, though she is cautious about the step up to 3200 metres and the outside draw. “She was very pleasing last start,” Temperton said. “I think she’s finally matured. She’s much easier to get along with now. She’ll have Mereana Hudson on again, who rode her very well that day. The big question is the distance – it’s a lot longer. On her dam’s side she has a little bit of staying blood. The Proisirs can go the distance, but I don’t think I’ve seen any of them over 3200 metres. There are some very good horses in this field and they are genuine stayers. She’ll need to be at her best, and the draw certainly doesn’t help.” Temperton will also saddle Procul Boy (Proisir) in the Douro Cup (1600m) at Trentham. She was happier with his barrier two draw, though his impost of 59.5kg is a concern. “He’s got the good draw and half the distance, but he’s got quite a bit of weight,” Temperton said. “He’s not big, so ideally I would’ve liked to swap the draw and the weight. He has won with 59 kilos before, but as you go through the grades it does get harder. He’s a nice horse though, the Proisirs are nice horses.”

HK: Newnham arms four-pronged attack on Hong Kong Classic Mile

The advantage lies with championship leader Mark Newnham as the Four-Year-Old Classic Series gets underway with Sunday’s Hong Kong Classic Mile (1600m) at Sha Tin. The Australian handler, who currently holds a narrow one-win lead at the top of the trainers’ standings, goes into the weekend’s feature with four of the 14 runners prepared in his yard. Newnham, who has been steadily arming his stable with young talent throughout his almost three-year stay in the city, said stockpiling exciting prospects was part of his broader strategy, an approach that has come to fruition during a breakout campaign. “I think you’ve got to have a plan for your season, and you’ve got to have a plan for the horses you buy,” said Newnham, who has accumulated 33 wins so far in 2025/26. “The Four-Year-Old Classic Series is very popular with Hong Kong owners. So you’ve got to buy horses with that in mind. We’ve been lucky enough to have a good group of horses that I’ve had from the start, that have made the race.” Newnham will be represented by Invincible Ibis (Hellbent), who will be ridden by Hugh Bowman, Crimson Flash (Showtime), Infinite Resolve (Snitzel) and Winfield (Rally Cry) in the Four-Year-Old Classic Series opener, the race that brought his first major Hong Kong success, when My Wish (Flying Artie) prevailed by a neck last season.

Karaka Summer Sale caps historic NZB National Yearling Sale week

Lot 958: Armory ex Hanako colt (Credit: Trish Dunell)

The final session of NZB’s 100th National Yearling Sale was held at Karaka on Thursday, highlighted by a strong first edition of the Karaka Summer Sale.

A total of 112 yearlings sold for more than $3.4 million, averaging $30,612, with six lots reaching $100,000 or more and a clearance rate of 82 per cent.

NZB managing director Andrew Seabrook said the week delivered outstanding results under the new format.

"To sum it up, this week we've turned over $9.6 million more than last year, with 79 less horses catalogued,” he said. "We're just over the moon, seeing these results from the new format.

"The Karaka Summer Sale today was one of the strongest sessions, almost matching Book 2 results from last year. It's just been a phenomenal week all around, celebrating such a big milestone in New Zealand thoroughbred history, and returning almost $96 million back to breeders.

"Our vendors have done an incredible job presenting their yearlings, our buyers supporting the sale so well and our whole NZB team who have all contributed to its success.

"We're looking forward to the demand for our yearlings continuing to our Online Yearling Sale, where of course the outstanding filly Well Written was purchased from."

The top lot of the day was Lot 958, an Armory (Galileo) colt out of Hanako (Satono Aladdin) offered by first-time vendor Stew McGregor and purchased by John Foote Bloodstock for $130,000.

“We’re so, so thrilled,” said an emotional McGregor. “To have that amount of people and trainers come through and inspect him, it’s really neat. We hope he’s got an exciting future for us to follow.”

McGregor also acknowledged the support of nearby stud farms: “Dean Hawkins, Windsor Park Stud and others around me have been instrumental in helping me along the way. It’s a team sport, alright.”

Lot 951: Redwood ex Florid Affair colt (Credit: Trish Dunell)

Queensland-based agent Foote was active across all three Books at Karaka, purchasing 14 lots in total and he said he was taken by Thursday’s session topper.

“He's a lovely big three-year-old type,” he said. “He’s a lovely moving horse with plenty of him. His pedigree's quite good when you go back into it, being from the family of Zirna and the three-time Hong Kong winner Super Football.

“I just took to him, so we bought him.”

Foote has been impressed with the progeny of Armory, who also had a pair of colts sell for $65,000 each on Thursday and had progeny sell for up to $625,000 at the Ready To Run Sale in November. The Mapperley Stud stallion’s oldest progeny are two-year-olds, and he has already been represented by early winner Silhouette.

Foote added: “There was one sold earlier for about $65,000 that was with Little Avondale, which was a nice horse and I saw a few last year that I liked as well, so I have liked a good few of them.

Foote’s other Summer Sale purchase on Thursday was Lot 951, a Redwood (High Chaparaal) colt from the draft of Westbury Stud. Foote paid $100,000 for the son of the Sebring mare Florid Affair, who won two races and is the dam of winners Part Time Lover, Mossfair, Ornate and Bid In A Hurry.

“Russell Warwick told me about six weeks ago, ‘I've got one horse for you to buy, and you've got to buy it,’” Foote said. “He said it's the best horse he’s bred for a long time. So we'll see.”

Both Summer Sale colts, along with the majority of Foote’s dozen other purchases for the week, are destined for Hong Kong.

Westbury Stud led the Karaka Summer Sale vendors by aggregate and average, selling seven lots for a total of $432,000, while Redwood (High Chaparral) was the leading sire.

Victorian trainer Patrick Payne finished as the leading buyer of the final session, purchasing three lots for $236,000, including a $100,000 Redwood colt (Lot 938).

Finnegan goes down tried and tested route

Samantha and Francis Finnegan followed a successful pattern when going to $125,000 to purchase a sharp filly by Written By (Written Tycoon) at the Summer Sale at Karaka on Thursday.

The result also delivered Hallmark Stud a brilliant pinhook result, with the filly having been picked up for only $600 via an Inglis Digital sale last June.

Awapuni conditioner Samantha Finnegan picked up her first winner as a trainer when her $150,000 Karaka yearling purchase Bona Sforza, another daughter of Written By, swept home on her debut to take out the Welcome Stakes (Listed, 1000m) at Riccarton and she also finished fourth in the 1000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) behind star filly Well Written.

Lot 954: Written By ex Glowing Trait filly (Credit: Trish Dunell)

The filly is out of the More Than Ready (Southern Halo) mare Glowing Trait who has now had three foals to race, all winners, including Written Glow, a debut winner for Cody Cole and subsequently sold to the Hayes family’s Lindsay Park.

“She was just a smashing filly,” Francis Finnegan said.

Francis Finnegan (Credit: Trish Dunell)

“On type, she was as good as you could get in any of the books. And when a dam's three from three and they're all closely related, it's a bit easier.

“I suppose when a full sibling's winning, it's always a help. And it's gone to Lindsay Park in Australia, so there's a chance of an Australian black type update for this filly too.

“She vetted well and we have a good one by the stallion, so you tend to go where you've found success before.

“We had Tuesday gallops, so we weren't really able to get away. So it suited us that this filly was later in the catalogue, as we could only get up for the summer sale.”

Dam's Sire: Written Tycoon

Trainer: Ken & Kasey Keys

Won: Sportsbet Blue Diamond Preview (C&G), Listed, 1000m, January 24, Caulfield

Ken and Kasey Keys’ juvenile Alibaba (Alabama Express) announced himself as a colt of considerable promise at Caulfield on Saturday, shedding his maiden tag in style when landing the Blue Diamond Preview (C&G) (Listed, 1000m).

Ridden by Craig Newitt, the son of Alabama Express (Redoute’s Choice) produced a strong finish to score by 0.4 lengths over Milsons Point (Blue Point), with Invicto (I Am Invincible) a further 0.2 lengths behind in third.

While the win carried obvious Group 1 implications, a start in the Blue Diamond Stakes remains undecided. Alibaba is not currently paid up for the $3 million feature, meaning connections would need to lodge a late entry, with an alternative Sydney option also on the table.

“We’ll wait and see how he pulls up; obviously with two-year-olds you can’t plan too far ahead; it’s one race at a time,” Kasey Keys said.

“There’s the option of heading up to Sydney for the Inglis Millennium in a fortnight. We’ll just keep our options open and let him tell us.”

Keys said the win was the culmination of steady improvement behind the scenes.

“He seems to have really settled down this prep and we’re really with him. Full credit to our team at home, he wasn’t the easiest to deal with early on,” she said.

Alibaba was having just his second career start, having finished a creditable third on debut in the Merson Cooper Stakes (Listed, 1000m) at Flemington on November 29.

“We’ve always known he’s had a motor; it was just a case of when he would put it together,” Keys said.

“That was the beauty of Craig coming down to trial on Monday, he could feel the gears he had under him, so he was full of confidence.”

Newitt was equally impressed with the colt’s professionalism on race day.

“He handled it like an absolute professional. That horse that played up was right beside him and he never batted an eyelid… He’s a proper colt,” he said.

“I reckon next time we ride him more conservative, and you’ll see the big booming finish he’s got.”

Bred by Yulong, Alibaba was a $115,000 buy for his trainers from his breeders at the 2025 Inglis Classic Sale.

He is out of the winning Written Tycoon (Iglesia) mare Rowsthorn and a brother to the stakes-placed Strideaway. Yulong will offer a yearling colt out of Rowsthorn by Lucky Vega (Lope De Vega) at Inglis Easter as Lot 52. The mare produced another colt by Lucky Vega last spring and was then covered again by Alabama Express.
