Powerhouse stable Lindsay Park will saddle up two exciting fillies in Saturday’s Chairman’s Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m) at Caulfield, with blue-blood La Gitana (Home Affairs) and Godolphin homebred Mirador (Brazen Beau) set to attempt to make their mark the weekend ahead of bigger autumn carnival ambitions.

The Chairman’s Stakes boasts an honour roll of elite juveniles, including Redoute’s Choice (Danehill) and Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt), both of whom used the race as a springboard to Blue Diamond (Gr 1, 1200m) success.

What's On

La Gitana demonstrated her precocity when she appeared at the first official two-year-old trials of the spring at Caulfield in October. She finished third and was sent back to the paddock.

Dam's Sire: Stravinsky

Breeder: Katom

“At those same Caulfield trials was Torture and Free flying, so she's actually done a really good job,” Will Hayes, who trains in partnership with brothers Ben and JD, told ANZ News. “She was up and over that day and we freshened her up.”

The filly has returned in strong order, winning two recent Pakenham jump-outs, both of which she jumped impressively and won with ease under a hold. The caller used phrases like ‘bolt in’ and ‘brain them’.

“She's come back and she's certainly a bigger, better version of herself,” Hayes said. “I thought her two trials so far have been nothing but pleasing and we are very happy with how she's come out of them.”

La Gitana was meant to make her debut in last week’s Blue Diamond Preview (F) (Gr 3, 1000m), but was scratched after being unable to get to the track due to freeway closures.

Hayes is hoping for better luck this weekend.

“It was just a shame last week, she was due to kick off in the preview,” he said.

“It was just completely uncontrollable. It was actually two 16-year-olds who stole a car and flipped it. That's the reason we missed the race, so she's going for a take two.”

La Gitana will jump from barrier four with Damian Lane aboard, and Hayes said the stable will allow her to use her natural pace without locking into a rigid plan.

“As a two-year-old on debut, the plan will just be to bounce, squeeze, travel. You don't want to take away early speed, which she looks at plenty of from her jump outs and trials, but you also don't want to make that your only game plan,” Hayes said.

From the first crop of Coolmore Stud’s Home Affairs (I Am Invincible), La Gitana has a pedigree worth boasting about. She is out of Group 2-winning mare Hips Don’t Lie (Stravinsky), making her a half-sister to Inglis Nursery (RL, 1000m) winner turned Coolmore stallion Acrobat (Fastnet Rock), Listed-winning Group 1 placegetter Lake Geneva (Fastnet Rock) and Ennis Hill (Fastnet Rock), winner of the 2018 Chairman’s Stakes.

Ennis Hill has since produced Champion 2YO Filly of 2022-23 Learning To Fly (Justify) and La Gitana’s stablemate Free Flying (Snitzel), who placed second in the Debutant Stakes (Listed, 1000m) in October.

La Gitana was purchased by James Bester Bloodstock from Coolmore’s draft at the 2025 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale for $400,000.

Home Affairs has made a bright start to his stud career, having produced 14 runners for four winners and a stakes winner.

The filly holds nominations for both of the premier juvenile Group 1s, but Hayes said the stable will wait to see how her debut performance unfolds before committing to a path towards either the Blue Diamond or Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m).

“We will certainly try to find a pedigree upgrade at every opportunity given she really is a textbook blueblood. But we will see what happens on Saturday and go back to the drawing board,” Hayes said.

Lindsay Park will also be represented by Mirador, who looks to go one better than her debut performance when finishing second behind exciting colt Big Sky (Bivouac) at Flemington on January 17.

The pair meet again on Saturday, with the Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained colt a firm $1.85 favourite.

“She came through the run very well,” Hayes said. “We are hoping to see an improved performance again back around the bend, like she did in her trials. She was very pleasing and I think it was very honest second to what looks to be the in-form two-year-old of the season from what we've seen so far. So it's exciting and I think her back around the bend could be the key.”

Mirador will jump from barrier nine with Luke Currie aboard, and Hayes said tactics may depend on how the race shapes from the wider draw.

“The draw of barrier nine is a little bit stickier, so we'll have to be more open to potentially riding her with cover, but as you could expect in the chairman's will be high speed from the thousand,” Hayes added.

She was very pleasing and I think it was very honest second to what looks to be the in-form two-year-old of the season from what we've seen so far. So it's exciting and I think her back around the bend could be the key

Will Hayes

Bred and raced by the Darley/Godolphin powerhouse, Mirador is by Brazen Beau (I Am Invincible) out of winning Group 3 placegetter Almanzora (Lonhro). Her second dam is Listed scorer Palomares (Commands), while deeper in the pedigree sits Blue Diamond winner and 2013-14 Australian Champion 2YO Earthquake (Exceed And Excel). The family also includes MRC Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Madame Pommery (No Nay Never).

The Hayes stable is renowned for its juvenile expertise and has already produced two two-year-old stakes winners this season in Maribyrnong Trial Stakes (Listed, 1000m) winner Eurocanto (Per Incanto) and Debutant Stakes (Listed, 1000m) winner Torture (Sword Of State).

Hayes said the stable’s success is built on education and process from the earliest stages.

“It starts from day one. We do a lot of education with our two-year-olds in terms of their craft and how they race among horses and in behind,” he said.

“We do a lot of different things with them and lead up, so these two fillies are very well prepared and we're very confident they'll handle the race day.”

With the yearling sale season in full swing, Hayes added the team is already focused on securing the next crop of juveniles.

“We've had really good support. We have been spearheaded by Dean Hawthorne and Josh Rix, and Dr. Dave McKellar, and that trio have really led us down a good path,” he said.

“We are very happy with the juveniles we have secured from Magic Millions and Karaka so far and we're gearing up to go again at Inglis Classic. It's been very good and the horses we're buying are selling down well. We're very happy with the athletes bringing home.”

Godolphin draft headlines Inglis February (Early) Online Sale

Lot 2: Chergui (Credit: Inglis)

A strong Godolphin draft, a yearling by first-season sire Anamoe (Street Boss) and a deep mix of racing and breeding prospects headline the 361-lot catalogue for the Inglis Digital February (Early) Online Sale.

Godolphin will offer a draft of seven three-year-olds, including two fillies, catalogued as Lots one to seven. The group is headed by stakes performer Chergui (Frosted), who was beaten less than two lengths by the stakes-placed Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) runner Gallant Son (Written Tycoon) at Flemington earlier this month.

Recent Godolphin drafts sold through Inglis Digital have gone on to produce stakes winners Barber (Exceed And Excel) and Alegron (Teofilo), along with last weekend’s Carrington Stakes (Listed, 1400m) winner Sandpaper (Snitzel).

Another standout entry is Mount Bona (Night Of Thunder), offered as a racing and breeding prospect. The mare has won her past three starts and four of her eight career outings, and represents a rare opportunity to acquire a daughter of European champion sire Night Of Thunder (Dubawi), who sired 32 individual stakes winners worldwide in 2025.

The catalogue also features a number of notable breeding prospects, including Velours Bleu (Nicconi), one of a limited number of mares in foal to elite American sprinter Cogburn (Not This Time), and Be Optimistic (Blackfriars), a dual stakes winner with earnings approaching $750,000.

Other highlights include Avila (Written Tycoon) – a daughter of three-time Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winner Makybe Diva (Desert King) – offered in foal to Russian Camelot (Camelot) with a Russian Camelot colt at foot, unbeaten The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice) three-year-old Blackthorn, Group 3 winner Duchess Kate (Savabeel) offered in foal to Henry Longfellow (Dubawi) and Layton Abbey (High Chaparral), three-quarter sister to Group 1 winner Nakeeta Jane (So You Think), offered in foal to Jacquinot (Rubick).

In total, the catalogue comprises 179 racehorses (including 86 race fillies), 79 broodmares, 77 racehorse shares, 24 yearlings and a pair of two-year-olds.

Also on offer is a five per cent share in Sovereign Hill (Written Tycoon), a last-start metro winner by 4.8 lengths.

Bidding for the February (Early) Sale opens from 10am on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, two supplementary lots have been confirmed for next weekend’s Inglis Classic Yearling Sale. Newgate Farm will offer an Artorius (Flying Artie) colt out of Kiss The Daddy (Scat Daddy) (Lot 799), while a Home Affairs (I Am Invincible) colt out of Word On The Street (Street Boss) has been added as Lot 800 in the Tyreel draft.

The Classic Sale will be held from February 8-10, with inspections officially beginning at Riverside on Tuesday, although close to 100 yearlings will be available for inspection from Monday.

Invincible Son set for Chairman’s Stakes

Trainer Robbie Griffiths believes Saturday’s Chairman’s Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m) at Caulfield will provide a clearer guide to Invincible Son’s (Farnan) progression as the colt builds toward a possible Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) assignment. Invincible Son finished third on debut in the Magic Millions VIC 2YO Classic (1100m) at Caulfield Heath last month behind subsequent Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) winner Unit Five (Supido) and will make his second race appearance in the sprint feature. Griffiths said there was improvement to come, but it had been difficult to assess how much he had taken from his debut run until he returned to the jump-outs at Cranbourne this week. “It’s hard to say how much he took from it because he hadn’t been back to the barriers until Monday and I thought he trialled really well,” Griffiths said. “He finished third to Guest House over 800 metres and that Guest House is pretty good. Nathan Punch never let him off the bit and the pleasing thing about Saturday is he’s drawn one. He drew the outside on debut and had to burn a bit of energy to get into the race. The race set-up suggested he was never going to run better than third. Even though we got beaten a substantial amount in a sprint, it was good to see Unit Five win the Magic Millions.” Griffiths expects the move to the roomier Caulfield track to suit. “He should be more comfortable because our training centre at Cranbourne is quite large,” he said. “I think most of the Cranbourne-trained horses appreciate a bit of space until they get a bit of practice under their belt. I think the biggest plus for him is barrier one. It gives Jamie [Melham] the opportunity to do what she wants.”

Captive Rock faces Chairman’s test

Trainer Simon Zahra will learn plenty about Captive Rock’s (Stay Inside) ceiling when the two-year-old steps out in Saturday’s Chairman’s Stakes at Caulfield, with a possible Blue Diamond berth on the line. Zahra believes the colt has natural talent but is still developing. “He’s quite natural. I don’t know whether he’s an 800 or a 1000-metre horse, but we’ll find out on Saturday,” Zahra told Racing.com. “He’s always been natural as he can run a bit of time and he looks like a two-year-old. He’s handled everything well. We’ll give him a shot at the title. Whether he’s going to be ready for the Blue Diamond as he might be a bit of a whippet. If he’s going to run in a Diamond, he needs to be competitive against these sorts as it looks a strong race.” Captive Rock missed last week’s Blue Diamond Preview (C\&G) (Listed, 1000m) and instead trialled at Flemington. “He wasn’t ready last week, he had to trial. This looks a lot stronger,” Zahra said. The colt is a $51 outsider despite winning his trial last Friday, with Thomas Stockdale to ride. Big Sky (Bivouac) heads the market at $1.80 for Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr, while Grahame Begg’s debutant Jadzia (Ole Kirk) is $4.60. Captive Rock is the first foal out of Group 3-winning Tasmanian sprinter Deroche (Needs Further) and was purchased by his trainer for $70,000 at last year’s Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale. Zahra is no stranger to Chairman’s Stakes success, having won the race with Crystal Lily (Stratum) in 2010 before she went on to Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) glory.

Samangu ready to strike in Geoffrey Bellmaine

Samangu (Credit: Sportpix)

Trainer Grahame Begg believes Samangu (Written By) has taken the benefit of two runs back and is now ready to return to her best as she lines up in Saturday’s Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Caulfield. The five-year-old will make her third appearance of the preparation after spending nine months on the sidelines following a training setback that forced her to miss the spring. She was turned out after winning at Caulfield last March. Begg admitted the mare was short of peak fitness when she resumed at Caulfield Heath on December 20 and finished last in a 1000-metre contest, but he was encouraged by her subsequent effort when sixth in the Standish Handicap (Gr 3, 1200m) at Flemington on January 10. “She has needed the two runs this time in,” Begg said. “Her first-up run was a non-event as she missed the jump, and it was a 1000-metre race on the Caulfield Heath. It had been a long time between runs for her, so she’s certainly needed that run. I thought she ran well in the Standish and was the only one down on the inside to run well. Hedged and Maharba finished well behind them that day and Hedged turned his form around by going to Pakenham and winning. She made a bit of a dash at them at the 300 [metres] the other week, but the horses down on the inside that day, it was like they hit a brick wall late. She ran well and she’s prepped up well for Saturday’s race and I think she’s about there now.” Samangu is unbeaten on the larger outer track, having won twice over 1100 metres in February and March last year, and is also a 1200-metre winner on the Caulfield Heath and at Pakenham.

Chilly Girl bids to emulate dam at Rosehill

Chilly Girl (Trapeze Artist) will attempt to follow in the footsteps of her dam I Got Chills (General Nediym) when she makes her debut in black-type company at Rosehill on Saturday. I Got Chills was heavily backed from $14 into $5 when winning the 2005 Maribyrnong Trial (Listed, 1000m) at Flemington. Chilly Girl has shown similar early speed and co-trainer Sterling Alexiou is hopeful she can make an impact first-up. “She was a very fast filly herself, I Got Chills, and hopefully we win on debut like I Got Chills did,” Alexiou, who trains in partnership with Gerald Ryan, said. “She’s going the right way. She’s trialled really nicely twice this time in. We have always had a bit of time for her. Obviously it’s not going to be an easy race to win at her first start, but from a good barrier, if she can get a few breaks she’ll run really well.” A homebred for prominent owner Bert Vieira, who raced Trapeze Artist (Snitzel), Chilly Girl will be partnered by Tim Clark, who rode her in a recent trial win. “We put Tim on in her second trial,” Alexiou said. “He rides a lot of two-year-olds for Gai [Waterhouse] and other stables, so we thought he would give us a fair indicator of where she sits. Tim said she was very pushbutton and gave him a nice feel. She’s a nice quality filly and if it doesn’t happen for her this preparation, we’d probably give her a breather and focus on the winter and spring.”

Griffith makes Compelling case for JRA Plate hopeful

Mack Griffith (Credit: Sportpix)

Trainer Mack Griffith believes market expectations have missed the mark on both Compelling Truth (I Am Invincible) and Crown Legend (Deep Field), with the Mudgee-based horseman confident his pair can outperform their odds when they head to Sydney on Saturday. Compelling Truth is the lone double-figure runner in the JRA Plate (Gr 3, 1200m) quoted at $26 despite being a 12-time winner and having previously beaten race favourite The Instructor (Russian Revolution). The gelding also finished second first-up last preparation to subsequent Group 1 placegetter Angel Capital (Harry Angel) in Listed grade at The Valley. “I don’t know whether it’s because he’s a country-trained horse, but he’s fit and well and I was very surprised at the price,” Griffith said. “He’s beaten The Instructor. When we won the Wagga Town Plate it ran third. He’ll run a good, honest race like he always does and I’m happy to get him back to the track.” Griffith said a Melbourne trip had initially been planned before opting for Sydney. “We thought it would be too strong, but this race wasn’t as strong as we thought,” Griffith said. “There are no easy ones in this grade, but it’s easier than going all the way to Melbourne to meet the same sort of horses.” Stablemate Crown Legend will contest the Highway Handicap (1500m) on the same program and is also quoted at $26. “His two runs back have been full of merit,” Griffith said. “There will be plenty of speed, which will suit him. He will hit the line strongly. They don’t give us much chance in either race, but I think they will both go better than their odds suggest.”

Tough Romance sparks Blue Diamond dreams on debut

Tony and Calvin McEvoy could have a second runner for next month’s Blue Diamond Stakes after Tough Romance (All Too Hard) made a successful debut at Pakenham on Thursday night. Already represented in the Blue Diamond by unbeaten filly Moana Spirit (Tagaloa), the McEvoys unveiled the colt in the 1100-metre maiden, where he justified his $1.50 favouritism with a determined length victory. Ridden by Harry Coffey, the colt rolled forward to share the lead and when the Chris Waller-trained Stellar Cipher (Zoustar) loomed on his outside in the straight, Tough Romance responded to pull clear late and stop the clock at 1:04.68. “I thought he did a really good job,” Calvin McEvoy told Racing.com. “He began well and he’s never been in that position in his life. Everything he’s done, he’s sort of loped along out the back and been able to be taken into the race. So when he lobbed in front, I was pleased because Harry would have had to be choking him to not be there, and there wasn’t a lot of tempo. What it meant was he had to learn by doing it, I suppose. There was a stride there where it looked like the Waller horse was going to come to his outside and I thought he rallied. He’ll take great improvement out of the experience. I thought he won like a nice horse.” McEvoy said a Blue Diamond path remained on the table. “It’s going to be a bit of a wait and see what happens with the big race…whether we look to run him the week before,” he said. “To me, watching that, he’s only going to get better with more experience. Whether we run him the week before… if he happened to win, then you’d think about backing-up in the Diamond.”

Barbaric sires first winner

Improving on his debut third, Barbarian King provided his sire Barbaric (I Am Invincible) with his first winner when scoring at Rockhampton on Thursday. Trained by Tom Smith, Barbarian King was sent out a dominant favourite in the four-horse field and was ridden positively by Cody Collis and kept on gamely to deny the persistent Craiglea Monnie (Craiglea Boz) by 0.1 lengths. Barbarian King is the first winner among just four runners by Black Opal Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) winner Barbaric, who is out of the MRC Tristarc Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) winner Mimi Lebrock (Show A Heart). His other runners include debut runner-up Bowdene. Bred and raced by G Milner, Barbarian King is the first runner and first winner out of Aleysa’s Queen (Carrara), who produced a brother to the colt in September after missing the following breeding season. Barbaric has covered more than 200 mares across his first four seasons at stud and stood the most recent season at a fee of $6,600 (inc GST) at the Kruger’s Lyndhurst Stud.

Livesey crowned Dux of SA Apprentice Academy

Alana Livesey (Credit: Racing SA)

Jockey Alana Livesey has been crowned Dux of the SA Apprentice Academy, headlining the Racing SA Apprentice Academy Awards of 2025, held at Morphettville, on Thursday evening. The honour caps a standout season for the talented jockey and includes a study tour to Hong Kong, where Livesey will spend time with the Hong Kong Jockey Club as part of Racing SA’s long-standing international development partnership. Livesey’s year was highlighted by a Premier’s Plate (Listed, 2000m) victory aboard Wild Imagination (Makfi) for trainer David Page, marking her 50th metropolitan winner and second career Listed success. She also collected multiple awards on the night, including Minister for Racing Ride of the Year and the South Australian Jockeys Association Endeavour & Sportsmanship Award, recognising her professionalism, leadership and commitment to equine welfare. Apprentice Academy talent manager Ruby Mayers praised Livesey’s efforts. “This is a much-deserved recognition for Alana,” Mayers said. “The way she has overcome challenges whilst maintaining consistency in both her work ethic and performance is a true credit to her resilience and undeniable talent.” Livesey is in the final months of Racing SA’s Apprentice Academy, with fellow apprentice Taylor Johnstone named Dux runner-up following a decorated season that included black-type wins in 2025. The Academy continues to produce elite-level riders, with graduates including Jamie Melham, Kerrin McEvoy and recent Group 1 winner Lachlan Neindorf. Racing SA currently supports 22 apprentices, including ten metropolitan-licensed riders, operating from the Academy’s purpose-built Somerton Park facility, which opened in 2024.

Oaks path emerging for Navigator

A long-range plan for Crimson Sky (Ocean Park) continues to gain momentum and another encouraging performance at Trentham will confirm a crack at the end goal of the New Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m). The Cody Cole-trained three-year-old will round off her preparation for the Classic in Saturday’s Lowland Stakes (Gr 2, 2100m). “The three-week gap to the Oaks will give us a nice opportunity to take her to Ellerslie for a gallop, she has trialled there and another look around will be really beneficial,” Cole said. The daughter of Ocean Park (Thorn Park) was purchased out of Woburn Farm’s draft at Karaka for $20,000 by Adrian Clark’s Challenge Racehorse Syndications, who have enjoyed previous Oaks success in 2020 with the Shaune Ritchie-trained Jennifer Eccles (Rip Van Winkle). Crimson Sky has made sound progress and following a debut sixth finished runner-up before gaining an early black-type credit when a close third in the Desert Gold Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m). “She had a half a-mile trial at Avondale a while back and then kicked off over 1200 metres at Rotorua,” Cole said. “I called Adrian after that and I said this is going to sound a bit ludicrous, but we have to get her to the Desert Gold and Trentham will suit her. We worked back from that and picked out a maiden over 1300 metres at Tauranga where she ran a massive race [for second]. She’s just kept improving and it’s been something we planned a while back and hoped she’d step up as we asked and she’s done it really well.”

Shaking Stevens set for Remutaka Classic

South Canterbury raider Shaking Stevens (American Pharoah) will line up in the Remutaka Classic (2100m) at Trentham on Saturday. The $350,000 feature is one of the innovation races introduced to the thoroughbred calendar in the 2023-24 season under the strategic partnership between TAB NZ and Entain and is restricted to horses that had won no more than one race at the start of the current season. Shaking Stevens was a single race winner for his original trainer Stephen Marsh when he was put up for sale on the Gavelhouse online platform last March. Christchurch enthusiast Richie Preston identified the American Pharoah (Pioneerof The Nile) gelding as an ideal candidate for the Remutaka Classic and was able to claim him for $8,000, setting in motion a plan that has since been implemented by trainer Stephanie Faulkner. Having had 14 starts since last June have produced four wins, capped by a home-track victory in the Timaru Cup (1600m) in late December and earning stakes of more than $82,000 to set up Saturday’s Remutaka Classic mission. “Richie loves putting these plans together and getting people involved, he’s a real driving force who brings a lot to the table,” Faulkner said. “He did the same with Green Luck, who we won the Canterbury Gold Cup with, and this horse has also given more than 30 people in the ownership a whole lot of fun. It wasn’t such a bad run considering he started to colic when he was cooling down, that can’t have helped him. I got the vet to him and things settled down pretty quickly and he’s been fine since. He’s been in work a long time and is well-seasoned, so all I’ve had to do lately is keep him happy.”

Anderton hoping for late birthday presents

Mayor Of Norwood (Credit: Race Images)

Brian Anderton, a doyen of South Island racing, celebrated his 89th birthday on Thursday, and the Wingatui-based trainer is hoping he can collect some late birthday presents this weekend. The White Robe Lodge principal will be chasing Group success in the North Island on Saturday after sending eight-win gelding Mayor Of Norwood (Ghibellines) north to Trentham to contest the Wellington Cup (Gr 3, 3200m). Anderton, who trains in partnership with his son Shane, said the seven-year-old son of Ghibellines (Shamardal) has handled the marathon trip with aplomb and has settled in well ahead of his weekend assignment. “He has travelled terrific and has eaten up well,” he said. Mayor Of Norwood heads into the two-mile feature in good form, having won his last two outings, both over 2200 metres on his home track. He has only been tested over 3200 metres once before, finishing 14th in the 2024 edition of the New Zealand Cup (Gr 3, 3200m), and distance remains Anderton’s biggest query ahead of Saturday. “He is like a lot of the others, he has got to get two miles,” Anderton said. “He has done all he can down here as far as weights go. He has great owners and he has been handled very quietly in the first part of his career and he has risen to the occasion.” Closer to home on Sunday, Anderton will send six runners to Gore, including promising three-year-old fillies Assemble (Almanzor) and Golden Spirit (Ancient Spirit), who will both contest the Gore Guineas (Listed, 1335m). “Assemble has done well and the other filly has done well too,” he said. “Golden Spirit over-raced a bit here [Wingatui] in that maiden race, we might ride her a wee bit forward and use her speed a bit.”

Cartwright reunites with old boss in Wellington Cup

Expat Australian hoop Matt Cartwright is looking forward to teaming up with his old boss at Trentham on Saturday when he rides Interpretation (Galileo) in the Wellington Cup. The Group 3-winning stayer is trained by leading Australian horseman Ciaron Maher, who Cartwright used to ride work for when based in Melbourne, and the New Zealand-based jockey said he knows the Irish-bred gelding well. “I had a great connection and relationship with Ciaron Maher during my apprenticeship when I was in Australia. I’m excited to be riding for Ciaron and I would love to get a result for him,” Cartwright said. “I know the horse quite well. I used to ride him in a few of his gallops when I was back in Australia and I rode him in a trial.” While he’s the winner of just four of his 34 career starts, Interpretation has tested his talent against Australasia’s staying elite, contesting three editions of the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m), with his best result being a sixth placing in the 2023 edition of the time-honoured race. The Bendigo Cup (Gr 3, 2400m) winner campaigned in New Zealand last year where he finished seventh in the Wellington Cup before running sixth in the Avondale Cup (Gr 3, 2400m) and placed in the Auckland Cup (Gr 2, 3200m). Interpretation placed in the Bagot Handicap (Listed, 2800m) prior to that campaign, and Maher has followed the exact same blueprint this year, with Interpretation finishing third in the New Year’s Eve Flemington feature. “By the looks of it he is going well and I think he profiles as one of the better chances in the race,” Cartwright said.

MLY: Inglis Digital hosted sale for Selangor Turf Club posts positive results

The inaugural Community Horse Project (CHP) 2YO Online Sale – hosted on the Inglis Digital platform – concluded on Friday with an 85 per cent clearance rate in what was a highly successful auction. The joint initiative between the Selangor Turf Club and Horse City Sdn Bhd concluded with very encouraging results, signalling a new era for a self-sustaining racing ecosystem in the region. The sale featured a catalogue of 33 two-year-olds, of which 28 sold and involved high levels of engagement from owners, trainers, jockeys and industry stakeholders. Indian Horse Club secured the highest bid of the sale, paying RM210,000 (approx. AU$75,720), part of a total spend by the IHC of RM550,000 (approx. AU$198,310). “Today is an historic moment for racing in Malaysia. This inaugural digital sale is more than just a transaction; it is the foundation of our racing community’s future. The participation we’ve seen today is incredibly encouraging as we work to replenish our equine population and ensure the longevity of the sport”, said Tan Sri Datuk Richard Cham Hak Lim, chairman of Selangor Turf Club.

HK: Sagacious Life soars as Shanwah seeks Classic Mile turnaround

Sagacious Life (Credit: HKJC)

Ahead of the Hong Kong Classic Mile (1600m) at Sha Tin on Sunday, the contrasting fortunes of Sagacious Life (Put It Back) and Shanwah (Too Darn Hot) during their brief time in the city could hardly be starker. Pierre Ng’s Sagacious Life is the highest-rated runner in the field with two impressive victories from his three outings. With champion hoop Zac Purton in the saddle, he’s widely expected to head the betting when markets open, and it will be a surprise to many if he isn’t in the finish at Sha Tin this weekend. The Brazilian-bred son of Put It Back (Honour And Glory) claimed four wins from six outings during his time in South America. Interestingly, the only horse to beat him in Brazil was Winfield (Rally Cry) (twice), who will also feature in Sunday’s race. A recent barrier trial win under Purton suggests the gelding’s form is peaking at just the right time. “I’m enjoying it rather than feeling pressure,” Ng said. “Because he’s raced three times and won twice, already the pressure’s off coming into the series. Of course, I haven’t got any results yet, but hopefully I can get a little bit more from this Four-Year-Old series. But not a lot of pressure, we are happy with the horse.” Douglas Whyte’s Shanwah has struggled to make an impression in his three outings to date, finishing tenth, 14th and 11th. His 80 rating – courtesy of some dazzling performances in Australia – is the joint-lowest in the field. “He’s just taking a little bit longer than I expected to settle in and come to hand. We’ve hopefully worked a few things out with him,” Whyte said. “His trial was encouraging. He was in need of that trial. I think he’s come on from that.”
