Graham dreaming of Millennium glory with $70,000 Inglis buy Royal Exile

Port Macquarie’s Jenny Graham - back in her second coming as a trainer with just a quintet of horses - admits she’d be lost for words if her two-year-old gelding Royal Exile (King’s Legacy) wins Saturday’s $2 million Inglis Millennium (RL, 1100m) at Randwick.

In fact, she’s already lost for words just thinking about it.

What's On

“I wouldn’t even be able to describe it. I really wouldn’t,” Graham told ANZ News. “I guess I think about it and how good that would be. It’d be a wonderful dream.

“Realistically, it’d be a pretty big task, but you can’t win it if you’re not in it.”

Royal Exile, a somewhat accidental $70,000 Inglis Classic buy for Graham, will be one of two sons of Coolmore sire King’s Legacy (Redoute’s Choice) contesting the feature.

The other also packs a punch for lovers of the romance of the turf, in that he’s from the small - though not as small as Graham’s - stable of Randwick-based octogenarian Les Bridge, in the colt Audit.

This pair in fact ran the quinella in a five-runner 1200-metre two-year-old handicap at Wyong’s Saturday metro meeting on January 10, with $21 debutant Audit coming from the back to lead in odds-on favourite Royal Exile by 0.17 lengths.

Despite that finishing order, and the fact Audit has gate 11 for Andrew Adkins and Royal Exile barrier 20 for Sam Clipperton - with both to move in three sans emergencies - bookmakers have Bridge’s chestnut at $61 for Saturday, with Graham’s bay at $18.

“I thought that was odd,” Graham said of the odds. “People must have reasons for it - I don’t really know what they are - but I’m happy enough with my horse.”

Graham has had big city successes, most notably with Victorem (I Am Invincible) taking Randwick’s Country Championships Final (1400m) in 2018 - when it was “only” worth $600,000, short of the $1 million it carries now - plus a Group 2 and two Listeds in Brisbane.

But she is eminently happy staying in Port Macquarie, where she’s part of the town’s most famous racing family. One daughter, Melinda Turner, is an ex-jockey turned presenter on Sky, while another, Angela Graham, is a former trainer who now works with her mother.

Former brother-in-law Peter Graham is a famed country jockey, now also with a trainer’s licence, while his daughter Cejay has forged a surging career in the saddle in Brisbane.

Jenny had built herself up to become one of rural NSW’s most recognisable trainers, with her 16-box stable always full, and with many country features coming her way.

But she quit all of that and sold up in 2023 to care for her elderly father Jack Avery. After he moved into a care home, Graham found the lure of horses irresistible, though in a far smaller fashion than before.

“I don’t want to go back into full-time training again. It’s now more of a hobby,” she said. “I’ve bought another truck and bought all the gear, but it’s all just enough for four or so horses. Hopefully they can run a bit, and I can just poke around with them and have some fun.”

Graham ventured to Inglis Classic last year hoping to restart her stable. She bought the colt who turned out to be the gelding Royal Exile, bred by NSW’s Orpheo PL and offered by Ridgmont, but it perhaps wasn’t the most deliberate of purchases.

He always looked like he was going somewhere - he always had a bit of purpose about where he was going

Jenny Graham

“I didn’t know much about him, to be honest,” said Graham, who’d gone with a friend, Gosford-based trainer Angela Davies.

“Ange was looking at another horse in the same draft, by Capitalist, and then this horse [Royal Exile] came out at the same time. Someone else was looking at him, but I thought, ‘Geez - that’s a nice horse’.”

While Davies would buy the Capitalist colt for $60,000 - he’s still preparing for his first start - Graham moved fast to arrange an inspection of the other one.

“He wasn’t an overly big horse, just nice and compact, but I thought he was just a nice moving horse. He always looked like he was going somewhere - he always had a bit of purpose about where he was going,” said Graham, who ran a sideline in breaking during her earlier training career.

“The breaking experience does help when looking at yearlings. I look at a lot of them for their body language. How they are around the place is usually a sign of how they’re going to be in their racing.

“I sent him to Matt Vella at Hawkesbury to break him in. He said he was good to deal with, though he could be a little bit tricky with shying occasionally, but he’s been straightforward since I’ve had him. He does everything right and doesn’t need any gear.”

Royal Exile’s dam and second dam managed only a 1000-metre maiden win each, at Hawkesbury and Bairnsdale respectively. But third dam Volcada (Stravinsky) won an Adelaide Listed race and threw dual stakes-winning gelding Kaepernick (Fastnet Rock) - not that bloodlines have been a huge issue for Graham.

Audit pictured as a yearling (Credit: Inglis)

“I’m not really into pedigrees, mainly because I’ve got to get around what I can afford,” she said. “I didn’t so much look at the King’s Legacy aspect of it. I look a bit more on type, and something that I like, rather than a strong pedigree.

“But I’m a big fan of the Classic sale. I’ve bought a few horses there and had a bit of luck. It’s common knowledge that you can pay reasonable money there and a lot of times end up with quite a good horse.

“I’ll be going back to Classic next week. I’m not sure if I’ll buy anything, but I’ll be having a look.”

Graham also paid $30,000 at last year’s sale for a Captivant (Capitalist) colt from Mullaglass Stud’s draft. He’s now the gelding Vantorix, who won at Taree in November in his only start so far.

Royal Exile repeated that trick on debut, winning at Taree by 0.67 lengths two days before Christmas.

Both horses are raced by large groups of mostly long-term clients of Graham’s, with her daughters also in the ownership.

They are also often ridden in their work by Graham’s friend and fellow trainer Paul Snowden, who relocated to Port Macquarie after his split from father and training partner Peter in 2024. While the track has no pool, and the town’s beaches are usually too populated by dogs to make it safe for thoroughbreds, Graham likes to vary her horses’ preparations by taking them to Snowden’s property to wade chest-deep in a creek.

Vantorix and Royal Exile have been Graham’s only starters since she resumed training, giving her two wins and a narrow second for a neat 66.66 per cent winning ratio.

It’s common knowledge that you can pay reasonable money there and a lot of times end up with quite a good horse

Jenny Graham

Royal Exile will have to clear a major class rise if he’s to make it 75 per cent.

Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott’s Golden Gift (1100m) third Plagiarism (Written By) heads the Millennium market at $5.50, with Blue Diamond Preview (Listed, 1000m) hero Alibaba (Alabama Express) and Team Hayes’s 5.75 length Seymour debut winning filly Jacaranda (Home Affairs) at $7.

Team Munce’s last start Sunshine Coast victor Star Of Jamaica (Profiteer) is at $8, while Ciaron Maher’s Inglis Banner (RL, 1000m) queen Calamari Ring (Street Boss) is at $8.50.

But Graham believes that narrow Wyong second of Royal Exile’s was strong enough to suggest he has a chance on Saturday, even having drawn an out-of-towner’s gate, albeit in a one-turn affair.

Vantorix pictured as a yearling (Credit: Inglis)

“I was happy enough with his Wyong run, but I would’ve liked a bit more speed on. He sat outside the leader and it didn’t really suit him,” she said. “But I was happy enough, he’s pulled up well from it, and his last piece of work [on Tuesday] with Paul riding him was good.

“The Millennium will be high pressure, so there will be speed, so that’s good. I’m happy enough with how the horse is going into the race, but we have drawn awkwardly.

“He’ll have to go back. I don’t want to dig him hard to push up on the speed. If we can be midfield or a little bit worse, just try to settle and get in a rhythm, and if he gets a nice run in transit and relaxes and gets carted into the race, I know he’s got a nice finish.”

Victory for Royal Exile - or Audit - would bring a welcome boost for King’s Legacy, whose $1.4 million yearling purchase by bloodstock behemoth James Harron paid off with the ATC Sires’ Produce (Gr 1, 1400m) and Champagne Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) double and a stud career.

The Coolmore stallion has 31 winners from 85 runners with two crops running, but only one stakes victor so far in Steel Trap, who took Adelaide’s David Coles Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) last season.

The eight-year-old King’s Legacy covered 62 mares in his fifth season at stud last spring at $16,500, down from 113 at $22,000 the year before, after starting with 213 at $33,000 in 2021.

Mount Bona tops Feb (Early) Sale at $240,000

Lot 112: Mount Bona (Credit: Inglis)

Mount Bona (Night Of Thunder) – a winner of her past three starts for Paul Messara and Leah Gavranich – topped Wednesday's Inglis Digital February (Early) Online Sale when selling for $240,000 to Beaufort Bloodstock.

Messara, who is at Riverside this week managing Classic Yearling Sale inspections for Arrowfield, was delighted with the outcome.

“It’s a really nice result,’’ he said. “She’s a lovely mare with a lot of upside, she’s still got a lot of racing to come and she’s got a beautiful pedigree.

“I thought there was really good, strong spirited bidding on her, it was nice to see a large group of people interested in her and I wish the purchaser all the very best.’’

The sale's second-top lot was the stakes-performed Chergui (Frosted), who sold to Jolly Time Syndicate for $95,000. Chergui was part of a seven-horse Godolphin draft, which grossed $256,750. The seven Godolphin offerings sold to seven different individual buyers.

In total the February (Early) Sale grossed $2,706,550, continuing a strong start to 2026 for the leading online thoroughbred sales platform.

Entries for the February (Late) Sale are now open and will remain so until February 18. Already confirmed for the sale is Manolo Bling (Grunt), a last-start Listed placegetter who has already won four of her 15 starts and almost $450,000 in prize-money.

The four-year-old mare, who will be offered by Rob Cummings and owners as a racing and breeding prospect, is set to race again before the auction, at Eagle Farm on February 14.

The February (Late) Sale will run from February 18-20. To enter click here.

Where’s The Circus chasing another Inglis payday

Where's The Circus (Credit: Sportpix)

Where’s The Circus (Trapeze Artist) will chase another lucrative Inglis payday in Saturday’s $2 million Inglis Millennium (RL, 1100m) at Randwick, with connections also keeping a close eye on the sales ring. Less than 24 hours after the juvenile feature, the Paul Murray-trained two-year-old’s brother will be offered at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale. Prepared by Widden Stud, the colt, who is catalogued as Lot 190, looks certain of eclipsing the $1,250 Murray paid for Where’s The Circus via Inglis Digital in September 2024. “We knew he was in the sale and the owners have said, 'we've got to go and have a look at him', so we'll be doing that,” Murray said. Murray has enjoyed success with the family, having trained Misplaced’s (Fastnet Rock) first two foals, Where’s Snippy (Snippetson) and Can’t Find Snippy (Snippetson). “Where's Snippy, she was only a cheap horse and we had a lot of fun with her so we bought the sister and then when she [Where's The Circus] popped up we thought we'd have a crack at her as well,” Murray said. “The family's been good to us.” Where’s The Circus has already banked $231,000 in prize-money after her upset win in the Inglis Nursery, and Murray believes there may be more improvement to come from the filly. “We don't put much pressure on the babies… But to this day, we still haven't really opened her right up… she's a bit untapped,” he said. Where’s The Circus will jump from barrier two and Murray was pleased with the inside gate. “We were hoping for a nice barrier and we got it,” he said. Jay Ford will take over from Jean Van Overmeire in the saddle.

Millennium task for Star Of Jamaica

Father and son trainers Chris and Corey Munce are hoping that Star Of Jamaica (Profiteer) can land a big prize in Saturday's Inglis Millennium. The son of Profiteer (Capitalist) will be bidding to emulate his sire in landing the $2 million contest and has run well in his two starts to date, finishing second on debut at Eagle Farm before then winning over 1000 metres at the Sunshine Coast on January 24. “You can only go on what you see with your own eye and he’s certainly shown me enough to say he’s up to that sort of horse,’’ Chris Munce told Racing NSW. “It’s a tough little race but he’s drawn well [barrier five] and he’s got Zac [Lloyd] on him so he’s there to run well. I think Randwick will suit him, the 1100 metres will suit him. [Ryan Maloney] couldn’t pull him up until around the back so the horse is very fit and he hasn’t gone backward. He had to win [at the Sunshine Coast], there’s no use kidding ourselves. If he didn’t win there was no use taking him down but the way he won it was what I was impressed with. He looked like he was going nowhere at the 400 metres, 300 metres mark and when Ryan pulled the stick through to the left hand and gave him the message about what he had to do he chased out after the two leaders and did it easily in the end.”

Freedman eyes Kevin Heffernan return for Tom Kitten

Tom Kitten (Credit: Sportpix)

Tom Kitten (Harry Angel) will be given what connections believe is his best opportunity to return to the winner’s stall since last year’s All-Star Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) when he resumes in Saturday’s Kevin Heffernan Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) at Caulfield. Sam Freedman said the race shapes as the weakest assignment the enigmatic gelding has faced for some time after competing exclusively at the highest level. “And that was probably the thinking with going to this race,” he told The Verdict podcast on Wednesday. “He’s raced exclusively in the best Group 1s for quite some time. We thought let’s give him an easy enough target, first-up. It isn’t going to be a straightforward one – there will be race fit horses there – and he’ll have obvious improvement in him. But at weight-for-age, against these horses, you’d think he’ll be in it up to his eyeballs.” Freedman said the Group 1 winner has returned in good order, with the All-Star Mile and Australian Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) among logical autumn targets. “His work yesterday was quite sharp,” Freedman, who trains in partnership wis his father Anthony, said. “If we get a fair track and he gets his chance and is presented at the right time, he’ll be finishing very hard.” Freedman is also hoping for better fortune with High Alert (Street Boss) in Saturday’s Blue Diamond Prelude (C\&G) (Gr 3, 1100m) . The colt was luckless on debut when held up before charging late to finish less than a length from the winner in last month’s Blue Diamond Preview (Listed, 1000m). “He pulled up great,” Freedman said.“I think he has really come on. The favourite [Guest House] looks hard to beat but if we get even luck, and get our chance, we’ll see where he sits.”

Eurocanto back on Blue Diamond path after gate mishap

Lindsay Park is confident two-year-old Eurocanto (Per Incanto) is back on track towards his Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) target after an eventful start to his autumn campaign. The Ben, Will and JD Hayes-trained colt was withdrawn from the Blue Diamond Preview at Caulfield on January 24 after playing up in the gates and being scratched at the barriers. Race-day veterinarians deemed Eurocanto lame in the near foreleg, requiring a veterinary clearance before he could race again, while stewards ordered the youngster to trial to their satisfaction in a jump-out. Eurocanto returned to action in that jump-out at Flemington last Friday, finishing second in an 800-metre heat. JD Hayes said the stable was relieved to see their Blue Diamond hope back on course ahead of Saturday’s Prelude at Caulfield. “He trialled really well against the older horses, and he'll be taking his place,” Hayes said. “He's back on track and I thought it was a good trial. He passed with flying colours, and he was on his best behaviour and hopefully he stays that way.” Eurocanto has raced just once, winning the Maribyrnong Trial (Listed, 1000m) at Flemington last October. He had two jump-outs leading into the aborted January 24 run, finishing third at Flemington on January 2 before scoring at Werribee on January 16. “I don't think he will be lacking anything for fitness on Saturday,” Hayes said.

Douglas Derby dreaming with Kaye Jay

Mornington-based trainer Clayton Douglas has eyes on the South Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) with Wednesday's maiden winner Kaye Jay (Crackerjack King) after the gelding scored at the second time of asking. Having run second at Cranbourne over 1400 metres on January 22, the son of Crackerjack King (Shamardal) improved on that effort to beat Mr Independent (Doubtland) by 0.8 lengths under Jamie Mott. Douglas is now contemplating setting Kaye Jay for the South Australian Derby at Morphettville in May. "This horse has taken leaps and bounds from the time he arrived," the trainer said. "I think he got beaten 20 or 30 lengths in his first ever jump-out. He was completely hopeless, but he has taken that improvement, and you like to see that in three-year-olds, especially staying types. I haven't had to train him up too much this time, he's got there himself and to run well at his first start and then win at his second, he can definitely go forward. I would like to think he could be an Adelaide Derby type. He's a big, strong horse. With the facilities [of owner Barb and Barry Saunders] at Deniston Park, we can chop and change things with the Mornington stable. He's a horse with plenty of substance there and when he gets out to those staying trips he should really come into his own."

Feminino and Journeyman emerge as autumn prospects

Two lightly raced three-year-olds from rival stables have stamped themselves as horses to watch this autumn following impressive Wednesday wins in Sydney. The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Feminino (Tivaci) broke her maiden in determined fashion in a maiden handicap over 1400 metres at Warwick Farm, despite the distance perhaps falling short of her ideal. "I thought she'd be strong late, it was whether this distance today was still going to be short of her best," Bott said. "She's going to be right at home when she's at a mile and even 2000 metres. Hopefully she is a filly that can put her hand up for all those three-year-old Classics this season. She's a filly that can stay. She's tough and she has shown ability. To be winning here at only her second career start after a very good debut, that opens up a lot of options for her going forward." In the following race, Richard and Will Freedman unveiled another promising prospect in Journeyman (The Autumn Sun), who produced a booming finish to take out a 1200-metre maiden. The gelding had his career delayed after suffering a slab fracture to a hock following his second barrier trial last year, but connections were rewarded with a dominant debut. "I didn't think he'd win as dominantly as he's won but he has certainly got enough ability to start here in a pretty hot maiden," Will Freedman said. "We will probably give him one more kill and if he does that really well, maybe you throw him in the deep end. He has learned how to settle, which is unreal, but as you saw up the straight he's still got a lot to learn so if he can figure that out, the sky is the limit for him."

Chris Waller has outlined an ambitious Melbourne autumn program for several of his headline horses, led by Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) runner-up Buckaroo (Fastnet Rock). The seven-year-old will chase further Group 1 success in Victoria, with Waller targeting a trio of elite-level races beginning with the Futurity Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Caulfield on February 21. “He’s good. He’s freshened-up well. He’s had two trials,” Waller told SEN’s Giddy Up with Gareth Hall. “He travels down to Melbourne next week and he’ll run first-up in the Futurity. He loves Caulfield. He’ll be our Futurity, All-Star Mile, Australian Cup horse. They’re his best distances.” Buckaroo is set to progress through the All-Star Mile at Flemington on March 7 and the Australian Cup at Caulfield on March 28. Stablemate Sixties (Flying Artie), an impressive first-up winner at Rosehill on Saturday, is also Melbourne-bound with a Guineas campaign in mind. “He’ll head down to Melbourne tonight and run in the CS Hayes Stakes in ten days and then go to the Australian Guineas after that,” Waller said. “He’s well-bred, he’s a brother to Artorius. He won a Group race in the spring and he’s come back better.” Waller will also have a strong sprinting presence, with Angel Capital (Harry Angel) aimed at the Newmarket Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) on March 8, while Group 1-winning colt Beiwacht (Bivouac) is set to resume in the Black Caviar Lightning (Gr 1, 1000m) on February 14 ahead of a possible Dubai campaign. Wodeton (Wootton Bassett) is also likely for the Newmarket, while reigning champion Joliestar (Zoustar) may attempt to defend her crown.

Everest winner Think About It dies

Think About It (So You Think) has died after suffering complications following surgery for colic. The winner of the 2023 running of The Everest (1200) was euthanised aged seven, with his syndicators Proven Thoroughbreds confirming the news in a statement on Wednesday. "After initially coming through colic surgery successfully, Spud took a turn for the worse despite the efforts of the amazing team at Randwick Equine Centre," the statement said. "A high energy horse, Think About It applied himself 110 per cent to everything he did, without a great deal of self-preservation. He tried his guts out every time he raced and that is all any owner/fan/punter can ever ask for." Trained by Joe Pride, the gelding won 11 of his 19 starts and earned more than $11.45 million in prize-money. Alongside his Everest triumph, Think About It claimed two elite-level victories during the 2023 Brisbane winter carnival, scoring in the Kingsford Smith Cup (Gr 1, 1300m) and Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m). He was retired from racing after suffering a pulmonary haemorrhage in the 2024 Sydney Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) and spent his post-racing days at the property of his Everest-winning jockey Sam Clipperton.

Australian Thoroughbred Industry Employee Awards nominations open

The nominations for the 2026 Australian Thoroughbred Industry Employee Awards (ATIEA) are now open. Formerly known as the Stud and Stable Staff Awards, nominations will close at 5pm AEST on February 16, with the awards ceremony to be held on May 25 on the Gold Coast. Now in their 12th year, the awards, conducted by Thoroughbred Breeders Australia, with the global support of Godolphin and a list of industry sponsors, the ATIEA will again offer cash prizes in eight categories covering all aspects of racing, breeding and associated areas. The overall Thoroughbred Excellence Award will be replaced by the ATIEA Lifetime Achievement Award, to honour individuals who have made an exceptional and sustained contribution to the Australian thoroughbred industry over many years. Each category offers a cash prize of $10,000 for the winner and $3,000 for the runner-up (excluding ATIEA Lifetime Achievement Award), except for the newcomer category, where the winner receives $5,000 and the runner-up $3,000. All nominations must be accompanied by a testimonial detailing the reasons why a nominee deserves an award. Click here for more information and to make a nomination.

El Vencedor set to defend Herbie Dyke crown

El Vencedor (Credit: Race Images)

El Vencedor (Shocking) has been cleared to take his place in Saturday’s Herbie Dyke Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at Te Rapa, with Stephen Marsh confident the reigning Horse of the Year is back on track. The son of Shocking (Street Cry) has won only once from seven starts this season and raised concerns when fading to finish eighth in last weekend’s Fulton Family Stakes (Listed, 1500m) at Ellerslie. “We went over him with every possible test and we can find absolutely nothing wrong with him; his blood and heart and everything else are fine,” the trainer said. “He went out to the beach at Raglan this morning and just enjoyed himself, he looks bright and well and to be frank we can’t find any reason why he shouldn’t run. Opie [Bosson] said he was just too laid back on Saturday, so we’ve decided to take the ear muffs off and see if that makes a difference. Wiremu [Pinn] has ridden him a lot, so we’ll go back to the tried and true there. If there was any doubt about his soundness we wouldn’t be running, but if he was to run poorly again we would probably pull stumps and even consider retiring him. He’s been a wonderful horse who owes us nothing, so we’ll see what happens at Te Rapa and take it from there.”

Knobelas to test stamina in Te Rapa feature

The Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained mare Knobelas (Belardo) will tackle 2000 metres for the first time when she lines up in Saturday’s Herbie Dyke Stakes. The four-year-old is back campaigning in her country of birth and will line up following an unlucky third in the Aotearoa Classic (Gr 3, 1600m) at Ellerslie. “We think we probably should have won,” Kent Jnr said. “We spoke pre-race about the Ellerslie track. It's a tight corner, if you have to cut the corner and then come out that's a good thing but she was already on the outside so I didn't see the reason why we had to go back inside looking for runs. She got held up, got out late and she was good to the line, so I'm sure she's class-wise up to these gallopers on Saturday. She's a very progressive mare but the big unknown is 2000 metres, but this is certainly a good chance to find out. We're very hopeful she does get the 2000 metres, but you never know until you try it. She’s certainly had the right preparation and she'll be fifth-up on Saturday. We've got a good jockey in Daniel Stackhouse and a good barrier [two]. Daniel's a prolific winner over here, he's looking for his first Group 1, and it'd be nice if we could supply him with that.” Knobelas is second favourite behind fellow Australian raider Kingswood (Roaring Lion), the winner of the Zabeel Classic (Gr 1, 2000m) on Boxing Day.

Well Written thriving ahead of NZB Kiwi

Well Written (Written Tycoon) is on schedule to attempt to stretch her unbeaten record to six in the $4 million NZB Kiwi (1500m) at Ellerslie on March 7. The headline act of Stephen Marsh’s stable proved far too good for her rivals in the Karaka Millions 3YO (RL, 1600m) on her most recent start and remains a dominant $1.20 favourite. “She’s perfect,” the trainer said on Wednesday. “Matt [Cartwright] came in and cantered her around this morning and everything is good with her. She looks a picture and is getting that freshness back in her legs. We won’t have to do too much with her, maybe a trip to Ellerslie on the 21st [of February] for a breeze around, so we’re in a good place with her.”

Six highlights for Inglis Classic

ANZ News

Here, in lot order, is a look at six likely head-turners at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, starting Sunday.

Breeding: b c Zousain - Happy Pilgrim (Congrats)
Consignor: Rheinwood Pastoral
DOB: 02-11-24

The outstanding Private Harry (Harry Angel) is one of Classic’s great success stories, sold there for $115,000 in 2023 before winning his first five starts and more than $2 million in prize-money, taking in The Galaxy (Gr 1, 1100m) and a buy-in from Yulong along the way.

And now - not only at the same sale but out of the very same box - his breeders Rheinwood Pastoral are offering the star sprinter’s half-brother.

The colt by Widden Stud speed sire Zousain (Zoustar) was born in November, but you wouldn’t know it, says the southern highlands farm’s stud manager Dee Foster.

“A lot of people are surprised to find out he’s a November foal,” Foster says. “He’s actually quite forward for a November foal. He’s a good size, with good scope, nice muscle and good bone.

“I think he’s strong enough, mentally and physically, to go early - a typical jump and run colt.

“He’s a really nice colt with a great attitude; very easy to do anything with. He’s pretty easy on the eye and he moves well, and he’s been well received so far.

“We thought about taking him to the Easter sale, but we wanted to present him ourselves, and he was forward enough to bring here.”

Part of Rheinwood’s eight-horse draft, the colt also has elite-level winner Arkady (Myocard) in his family, and already has a strong omen about him.

“It wasn’t intentional that he would have the same box at the sale as Private Harry,” Foster says with a smile, “but hopefully it’s a good sign.”

Breeding: b/br c Too Darn Hot - Light Up The Room (So You Think)
Consignor: Newgate Farm
DOB: 22-09-24

Newgate is offering two highly rated yearlings - the filly Lot 233 and the colt Lot 621 - by its sizzling hot sire Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt), whose offspring have been the top two sellers in Classic history.

So it speaks volumes for Lot 138 that insiders consider this colt possibly the pick of Newgate’s 15-horse draft.

Offered on behalf of Ridgmont, the powerfully built colt is by one of Australia’s other most in-demand stallions, Darley’s champion first and second season sire Too Darn Hot (Dubawi).

And the female family is high on quality, with stakes-placed dam Light Up The Room (So You Think) a half-sister to Group 3 winner Mare Of Mt Buller (Dundeel). Fourth dam Savana City (New Regent) won the AJC Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) to become joint top filly on the Australasian 3YO Classification in 1987-88.

“He’s a very strong, athletic son of Too Darn Hot with plenty of size and scope, out of a really good racemare,” says Newgate managing director Henry Field.

“He’s was raised at Ridgmont, and they wanted to bring a horse of his calibre to Classic to really stand him out.

“He’s a dark horse with plenty of strength and great quality. But what’s particularly good about him is he’s a horse who just keeps improving all the time, so you can see him being even better in six months.

“He’ll definitely be capable of having good two-year-old form, but he’ll furnish into a really good three-year-old.

“He’ll be one of the most sought after colts at the sale.”

Breeding: b c Pierro - Real Desire (Wanted)
Consignor: HP Thoroughbreds
DOB: 14-09-24

Another great Classic success story is Skybird (Exosphere), sold by HP Thoroughbreds out of the old Highway Session in 2022 for $110,000, going on to become an elite-level winner of the VRC Lightning Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) and more than $1.2 million in prize-money so far.

Now her southern Hunter Valley breeders HP Thoroughbreds are putting up that mare’s three-quarter brother, by another son of Lonhro (Octagonal) in Pierro, out of the winning mare Real Desire (Wanted).

It’s a page littered with black type and some regal names. Third dam Snow Finch (Storm Bird) claimed a black type race in Ireland and threw two dual stakes winners in Australia, one of whom was super broodmare Snippets’ Lass (Snippets).

She left the great four-time champion sire Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice), dual stakes winner and subsequent sire Hinchinbrook (Fastnet Rock), a third black type victor in Viennese (Redoute’s Choice), and the stakes-placed dam of Group 1 winner Rediener (Redoute’s Choice).

“He’s very similar to Skybird,” says HP’s Anthony Evans.

“He’s a lovely, strong, medium sized colt. He’s got a great action, a great temperament, and is just a quality animal.

“He was down to go to the Easter sale but we decided to bring him here. It’s the same sale as Skybird was sold at, and we thought he’d be a stand-out here.

“A lot of people have commented on how well he moves. Everything about him just points to him being a really nice horse.

“The family doesn’t go super early - Skybird didn’t start til she was three. He’s strong enough and forward enough to be a two-year-old, but will probably be better at three and four, like Skybird.”

Breeding: b c Flying Artie - Set The Tone (Reset)
Consignor: Riversdale Farm
DOB: 19-10-24

Classic has long been a key destination for Hong Kong-based buyers, and this strapping colt looks certain to attract concerted attention from that direction.

By Flying Artie - sire of Europe’s reigning champion sprinter Asfoora - he’s a brother to emerging Hong Kong star My Wish.

That five-year-old gelding has won six of 16 starts, including three stakes races up to Group 2 level, and has twice run fourth at the top tier.

Just the second foal out of 2100-metre winner Set The Tone (Reset), this colt boasts a deep pedigree including his stakes-performed third dam Late Night Fun (Handy Proverb). She’s a half-sister to the black type placed Chatelaine (Flying Spur), dam of elite-level winning sprinters Mazu (Maurice) and Headway (Charge Forward), Australia’s Champion 2YO Filly of 2008-09.

“He’s a lovely style of horse with plenty of scope,” says Riversdale’s Nick Hodges, who’s presenting his farm’s largest Classic draft, at 27 lots.

“He’s just a horse who’s got a big presence about him, and a great walk. He really means business when he’s out there.

“He’s got good bone. He’s got a bit more depth to him than an out-and-out two-year-old, so you’d expect him to be a very good three-year-old.

“He’s been popular so far. People are coming for him, which is what you’d expect with his page, and you’d think he’ll draw good interest from Hong Kong.”

Breeding: ch c Harry Angel - Sretan (Bernardini)
Consignor: Kirks Bridge Farm
DOB: 14-09-24

The Hunter Valley’s Kirks Bridge Farm presents this brother to star sprinter Stretan Angel, the winner of three stakes races who’s also run second in the VRC Lightning Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) and SAJC Goodwood (Gr 1, 1200m).

Another son of Darley’s outstanding shuttler Harry Angel (Dark Angel), who finished seventh on Australia’s general sires’ table last year with just three crops running, the colt is the sixth foal of Sretan (Bernardini), whose dam was the Group 3-winning Pure Joy (Fusaichi Pegasus), the granddam of three-time stakes winner Alegron (Teofilo).

This early-looking colt is the highlight of his young farm’s well varied nine-horse draft, the largest it’s taken to Classic, and he’s been shaping that way for a long time, according to Kirks Bridge’s Brad McCarthy.

“He’s been a stand-out on the farm from day one. It’s been a bit of a wait but finally we’re here,” McCarthy says.

“It’s been great watching him grow. From pretty early doors I had a very high opinion of him. He’s a really classy colt, and the goal was always to try to bring him to a sale like Classics and stand him out a little bit.

“He’s such a big strong horse with plenty of scope, massive hindquarters, and a big, deep shoulder.

“The thing I like about him, and I have from day one, is the way he uses all of himself when he moves. He’s not a horse who just props along, he really uses every muscle when he walks.

“He’s matured so nicely along the way. He’s been a professional from day one and he hasn’t put a foot wrong.”

Breeding: b f Spirit Of Boom - Zoom By (Red Dazzler)
Consignor: Eureka Stud
DOB: 20-09-24

With exquisite timing, Melbourne’s boom two-year-old Big Sky (Bivouac) stormed to victory and up the betting charts for the Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) by taking last Saturday’s Chairman’s Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m) at Caulfield, giving him two wins from as many starts.

His Queensland breeders Eureka Stud are now excited to offer his half-sister who promises just as much speed, by their renowned explosive sire Spirit Of Boom (Sequalo).

And he hails from a power-packed page, so resplendent in black type there’s only room for two dams.

The first, Zoom By (Red Dazzler), was a speedy winner of four races. Second dam Zippast (Lord Seymour) was unraced, but is the mother of Listed victor Firenza (Kenny’s Best Pal), who’s the dam of Group 3 winner Tuscan Sling (Danehill Dancer) and the dams of two more stakes winners.

Zippast also left Beauty World (Danehill Dancer), a super producing dam of five stakes winners, including four-timer Lite’n In My Veins (Henrythenavigator), and Loveyamadly (Bel Espirit), who’s kept the chain going by leaving two more black type victors.

It’s a family that keeps giving, and Eureka are delighted with this addition.

“She’s a nice filly who looks a lot like her mother,” says Eureka’s Harry McAlpine.

“She’s strong, big hipped, sharp and with a great nature. She’s got a lot of the quality of her mother, who we raced ourselves and was extremely fast.

“Big Sky also has the mother’s quality, but has a bit more stretch and scope. This filly’s a bit more close-coupled, and is a pretty typical Spirit Of Boom.

“She’s a nice moving filly with a good athletic walk. She should go early and should be a very easy filly to train.”

David Hayes snares third DBS x Manulife Million Challenge with Romantic Son

Leo Schlink

David Hayes has continued a remarkable domination of the DBS x Manulife Million Challenge, clinching victory in the series for the third consecutive season after Romantic Son’s (Smart Missile) stunning success at Happy Valley on Wednesday night.

After Tomodachi Kokoroe (Written Tycoon) shared the spoils in 2023/24 with Danny’s Shum Copartner Ambition (Starspangledbanner), Hayes has triumphed outright across the past two years with Soleil Fighter (Sea The Moon) and now Romantic Son.

“It was very exciting to see Romantic Son win it - he’s my syndicate horse and they’re a great bunch of people, it’s such a thrill,” Hayes said after moving to 33 wins for the season – only one shy of trainers’ championship leader Mark Newnham (34).

“We’re up there now in the premiership and are certainly right in the hunt now - long may it continue.”

Decided on a format of 15 points for a win, six for second, four for third and three for fourth in Class 3 races and above from September until tonight, this season’s DBS x Manulife Million Challenge saw both Romantic Son and Regal Gem (Zoustar) finish with 45 points each.

But, under the competition regulations, Romantic Son claimed the winner’s purse of HK$1 million (approx. AU$183,050) on countback with three wins to Regal Gem’s two, sealing overall success with a brilliant performance to land the Class 3 Sing Woo Handicap (1200m) under Harry Bentley, who replaced indisposed Dylan Browne McMonagle.

With 42 points, Regal Gem needed a top-three finish in the Class 2 Blue Pool Handicap (1200m) to overtake Romantic Son and win the series but he crossed the line in fourth place behind Tony Cruz-trained Beauty Waves (Starspangledbanner) under Zac Purton, Young Champion (Zoustar) and Brave Star (Myboycharlie) to finish with 45 points from two wins, two seconds and a fourth.

In addition to prize-money of HK$1.04 million (approx. AU$190,040), Romantic Son earned HK$1 million for the DBS x Manulife Million Challenge triumph, while Regal Gem’s connections collected HK$350,000 (approx. AU$64,070).

Three horses – King Miles (Exceed And Excel), Storm Rider (Dracarys) and Awesome Fluke (Awesome Rock) totalled 36 points – and earned HK$50,000 (approx. AU$9,150) each.

Jumping from barrier 12, Romantic Son (135lb) finished powerfully to overhaul California Blitz (Capitalist) and Power Koepp (Equiano) to register his fourth win – all at Happy Valley - from 19 starts.

“Obviously I was concerned the horse was carrying top weight and had a bad draw [barrier 12] because I perhaps thought he needed a perfect one-back, on-the-rail trip but he’s clearly proven that theory wrong and won from a wide gate.

“To be fair to the horse, he quickened really well off the top weight and he won well. Obviously, I know the horse really well, having won on him twice before so it was unfortunate for Dylan but good to step in and get the owners another winner.”

Awesome Fluke effectively scuttled the hopes of Helene Feeling (Sioux Nation), Silvery Breeze (Dundeel) and Huge Wave (Vadamos), who all could have moved into the top three of the competition standings, when he set a course record of 1m 37.74s to win the Class 2 Shan Kwong Handicap (1650m) for Ricky Yiu and Andrea Atzeni.

Settling second behind New Forest (Justify), Awesome Fluke surged to the front at the top of the straight to resist Soleil Fighter and Huge Wave to post his fourth victory in Hong Kong after winning the 2023 W.A.T.C. Derby (Gr 2, 2400m) in Perth, Australia where he raced as Awesome John.

“I thought we went a nice gallop, I was happy to lead, and Lyle [Hewitson on New Forest] went on a decent tempo,” Atzeni said. “With a light weight and coming back in distance, my only chance was to make it into a proper test of tempo because a sprint was going to suit me and with a light weight, he kept going.”

Ng and Atzeni combined for doubles when Storm Runner (Microphone) notched his first win at his 17th attempt with success in the Class 4 Yuk Sau Handicap (1800m), before Maxime Guyon prevailed on Me Tsui-trained Candlelight Dinner (Russian Revolution) in the Class 3 King Kwong Handicap (1000m).

Caspar Fownes extended his lead in the Happy Valley standings with a double and moved to within one win of 1,200 career victories in Hong Kong when the ‘King of the Valley’ struck with Somelovefromabove (Lonhro) in the second section of the Class 4 Wang Tak Handicap (1200m) under James Orman and Hong Kong International Sale graduate Corleone (Dundeel) in the Class 3 Tsui Man Handicap (1650m) under Ellis Wong.

Victor The Rapid (Estidhkaar) broke through for the first time this season with success in the first section of the Class 4 Wang Tak Handicap (1200m) for Pierre Ng and Jerry Chau, who subsequently teamed with Cody Mo to score aboard Stormi (Cappella Sansevero) in the Class 3 Yik Yam Handicap (1650m).

Hong Kong racing continues at Sha Tin on Sunday with the Centenary Vase Handicap (Gr 3, 1800m).
