McDonald back in Blue Diamond frame as Streisand strikes at Caulfield

Cranbourne-based trainer Clinton McDonald moved a step closer to a second Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) victory in three years after Streisand (Magnus) broke her maiden with a timely win in Saturday’s Fillies’ Prelude (Gr 2, 1100m) at Caulfield.

Inglis Classic Yearling Sale inspections

The 2026 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale gets underway at Riverside Stables on Sunday, with 715 (800 less 85 withdrawals) yearlings to be offered across three days in Sydney.

The catalogue features progeny by 113 individual sires, ranging from established commercial stallions to a strong cohort of first-season sires.

What's On

Proven names represented include Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt), Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice), I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit), Zoustar (Northern Meteor) and Written Tycoon (Iglesia), while the produce of 14 freshman stallions will be offered, among them Anamoe (Street Boss), Artorius (Flying Artie), Hitotsu (Maurice), In The Congo (Snitzel), Jacquinot (Rubick), Profondo (Deep Impact) and State Of Rest (Starspangled Banner).

A total of 74 vendors are represented, with the majority of yearlings eligible for Australian incentive schemes including BOBS, VOBIS Silver, QTIS, Racing Rewards SA and Westspeed.

The Classic sale has been influential from a stallion-making perspective, producing sires such as Extreme Choice, I Am Invincible, Choisir (Danehill Dancer), Hellbent (I Am Invincible), Castelvecchio (Dundeel), Brazen Beau (I Am Invincible) and Cosmic Force (Deep Field).

Conditions have been ideal throughout the inspection period at Riverside and Inglis chief executive officer Sebastian Hutch said buyer engagement has been encouraging ahead of the opening session.

“It’s interesting because you can sit and watch the first two sales of the year on the Gold Coast and in New Zealand, so I feel like we have a fairly extended build-up to this,” he told ANZ News. “We put a huge amount of work in through the year cultivating people to buy at sales. This is our first sale of the year and people seem motivated to participate.

“There is good footfall, good international representation here, good interstate, good local stuff. No auction house will ever say, ‘I have enough buyers.’ You always want more buyers, but I’m happy where we sit at the moment.”

Hutch also pointed to the sale’s strong record of producing high-end performers and value graduates, including Pride Of Jenni (Pride Of Dubai), Sepals (Calyx), Private Harry (Harry Angel), Skybird (Exosphere) and Hong Kong champion Voyage Bubble (Deep Field). Since 2018, Classic graduates have produced 41 individual millionaires, with recent seasons also delivering elite performers such as Veight (Grunt), Celestial Legend (Dundeel), Beauty Eternal (Starspangledbanner) and Coco Sun (The Autumn Sun).

Sebastian Hutch

“The sale has had a good run in terms of graduate success,” Hutch said. “Just little things like having the winner of the Golden Gift two years in a row, the winner of each of the first two runnings of the Sunlight, things like that remind people what you come here to buy. You could have bought Grafterburners for $70,000, Revengeance for $100,000, and between them they won a $3 million race and a $1 million race in the space of six weeks.

“Pride Of Jenni has been a great flagbearer for the sale, so has Voyage Bubble. These are all the important features of keeping the sale in the forefront of people’s minds. We’ve talked about this over the last number of years, but I think there’s genuine respect for the sale in the market now. I think that’s a feature in helping consolidate a good buying bench.”

Value remains a defining feature of the Classic sale, with Hutch highlighting the sale’s long-standing ability to produce top-level performers at accessible price points.

“People want to buy the best horse they can for as little money as they can,” he said.

“Expensive horses garner the headlines, but ultimately the mandate of the buyer and the mandate of the vendor, they’re juxtaposed. A vendor wants to get as much money as they can, and a buyer wants to spend as little as they can.

“This sale has produced more Australian stakes winners for $100,000 or less than any other over a period of time, which is a fantastic way of illustrating the value that can be found here.

“You look through the graduates and 14 of the Group 1-winning graduates since 2018 could have been bought for $100,000 or less. The profile of the sale started to build on the likes of She Will Reign, who cost $20,000, and Yankee Rose, who cost $10,000, and they were important parts of building the profile of the sale.

This sale has produced more Australian stakes winners for $100,000 or less than any other over a period of time

Sebastian Hutch

“As years have gone on, Brazen Beau cost $70,000 out of the sale, Hellbent $95,000, Castelvecchio $150,000, and even a horse like Extreme Choice - the most influential stallion in the country - he cost $100,000 out of the sale here. They’re important parts of building the profile of the sale and it has just kept growing and growing.

“It excites people about coming to the sale. People want to know that they can come here and buy a nice horse for not a lot of money. And vendors come here knowing that there’s going to be a huge consolidation of people here, and it gives them their best chance to sell a horse. That’s why they keep coming back year after year with better horses every year.”

International participation is again a key feature of the Classic sale, with Hutch outlining the extensive work undertaken by Inglis to nurture offshore buying benches.

“Cultivation of international buyers is hard,” he said. “We work really hard at it. We have a series of markets that are positively disposed to Australia - in Hong Kong, China, Malaysia, New Zealand - they’re foreign jurisdictions that speak a different language and have a different form of racing.

“Nicky Wong would go to different parts of Asia six or seven times a year, James Price goes two or three times a year, as do I. We work really hard trying to cultivate those relationships with a view to having good representation here at the sales. I feel we do that better than any other auction house.

“I think it’s borne out in the figures. We’re constantly having good international representation at Classic, Premier and Easter, but certainly at this sale. It’s a real target sale for people from Hong Kong and China, and we are going to have Korean representation at this sale for the first time. Hopefully they can find horses to buy.

“New Zealand will be significant participants here, particularly in terms of the traders. It’s not a sale where we see Europeans or people from the US, although Arthur Hoyeau is down here from France helping Chris Munce, and we look to try and engage a few other international clients and northern hemisphere clients.

“You are battling against a lot of factors, and we were really pleased with how it worked out in 2025 in terms of how those people engaged, and we’re looking to try and do a bit better again in 2026.”

Following the record-breaking Inglis Ready2Race Sale earlier this year, Hutch believes Classic provides an important foundation for traders and participants looking ahead to later sales in the series.

“Our ready to race sale broke through $20 million for the first time. It was a big deal. It was a sale that six or seven years ago was turning over six or seven million dollars, and to have it grow three times over is a big deal.

“We want to try and progress that sale format further. There’s another Group 1 winner out of the sale this season, ironically a Classic graduate and a two-year-old sale graduate, in Libertad, a really likeable horse, an entire that wins stakes races or Group races in four consecutive seasons.

“It is a hugely enchanting sale format. The level of horsemanship involved in doing that is a step up. It’s challenging presenting weanlings and yearlings for sale, but taking two-year-olds to a sale is another level again, and those people are very brave. There’s a lot of work involved in that. So when they get a good payday, I think they deserve it. They’ve worked hard to get it.

“We’ve been very supportive of two-year-old conditioners over a number of years and it’s helped us grow that sale. That sale is an important part of supporting a market like what we have at Classic.”

With Magic Millions and Karaka delivering improved clearance rates and averages, Hutch is hopeful that momentum will carry through to Classic and beyond.

“It’s a new year. At this stage, last year is irrelevant, even though we take confidence from the success of the year. I feel like we’ve prepared at least as well, if not better, than what we did last year, and I suppose you take some confidence from that.

There’s a little bit more confidence in the market than there was 12 months ago

Sebastian Hutch

“This year, we go into the sale with Magic Millions down about $5 million and New Zealand up $9.6 million, with different profiles of catalogue. But auction houses work off turnover - they’re the figures that are important.

“So you would say, on the basis of that, that there’s a little bit more confidence in the market than there was 12 months ago. Whether that will manifest itself for ourselves, I don’t know. I feel like there are plenty of nice horses here. The vendors know what they have. We have a vendor bench that is motivated to meet the market.

“Hopefully the desires of purchasers and vendors can be satisfied, they meet in the middle somewhere, we clear well, and people go home happy.”

Scone-based operation Riversdale Farm will offer a draft of 27 yearlings at the Inglis Classic Sale, with owner Nick Hodges encouraged by strong early engagement during inspections at Riverside.

“It's been really busy, it's fantastic,” Hodges told ANZ News. “The foot traffic has been really positive and the horses are parading well, so really pleased with initial inspections and hopefully that continues into the second looks and x-rays and everything that we need to get these horses sold.”

I'm really happy with the draft as a whole. We've been busy across the board, so the proof will be in how we sell

Nick Hodges

The Riversdale draft features progeny by a mix of proven and emerging sires, including Ole Kirk (Written Tycoon), Flying Artie (Artie Schiller), Harry Angel (Dark Angel), Justify (Scat Daddy) and Spirit Of Boom (Sequalo), alongside younger stallions Home Affairs (I Am Invincible), Jacquinot (Rubick) and Artorius (Flying Artie).

Hodges believes the farm’s offering caters to all levels of the market.

Lot 406: Flying Artie ex Set The Tone colt (Credit: Inglis)

“It feels like the sale has got buyers at every level, which is really important. You've got people at every level coming and having a look at the horses, which is great. It gives you a real safety net with what you're trying to sell. We've got a great range of nice physicals, there is a bit of variation in pedigrees and stallions, but, as a whole, I think we've got a very even, very nice bunch of horses. I'm really happy with the draft as a whole. We've been busy across the board, so the proof will be in how we sell.”

Riversdale will open their selling on day one with Lot 9, a colt by North Pacific (Brazen Beau) out of the winning Dundeel (High Chaparral) mare Filters, from the family of Adelaide Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winner Demerger (Saithor).

“As a physical, the North Pacific colt is a very nice individual. He's the sort of horse that could sell at any level, but as an individual he's a real standout.”

Lot 413: Ole Kirk ex Sheer Lightning colt (Credit: Inglis)

Midway through day two, the farm will offer Lot 406, a colt by Flying Artie out of Set The Tone (Reset), a brother to Hong Kong star and $4.4 million earner My Wish.

“He's been very popular,” Hodges said. “He's a lovely style of horse. He's got plenty of size and scope about him, nice and correct. Good boned. He’s really good.”

Soon after, Lot 413, a colt by Ole Kirk out of Sheer Lightning (Sebring), will also go under the hammer. The mare is a placed half-sister to stakes performers Elusive River (Elusive Quality) and Rivatorio (Oratorio), with the family also including New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Crown Prosecutor (Medaglia D’Oro) and Champagne Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Captivant (Capitalist).

“He has probably been our busiest horse. Obviously Ole Kirk is a great sire. He's been doing a fantastic job. His [Lot 413] half-brother, Captain Thunderbolt won a trial by three and half lengths here at Warwick Farm the other day, which was really positive. He's been going really well.”

Morning Briefing

Australia

33 for Magnus

Late Widden Stud sire Magnus (Flying Spur) sired his 33rd stakes winner when Streisand (2 f ex Zouper Star by Zoustar) took out Saturday’s Blue Diamond Prelude (F) (Gr 2, 1100m) at Caulfield. Ridden by Jamie Melham for Clinton McDonald, the filly justified her favouritism when surging away from her rivals to win by 0.75 lengths over Chayan (I Am Invincible). I Am Aria (I Am Invincible) finished a further 0.85 lengths behind in third. Bred by Victoria’s Eldon Park Stud, Streisand was a $22,000 buy for Northmore and Waterford from Yarran Thoroughbreds’ Inglis Great Southern Yearling Sale draft. She was subsequently purchased by her trainer with Shane McGrath Bloodstock for $100,000 at the 2025 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale. Streisand is the third foal and only winner from winning mare Zouper Star (Zoustar), herself a half-sister to Listed scorer Best Yet To Come (Econsul). Zouper Star has since produced a colt by Star Witness (Starcraft) and foaled a colt by Nicconi (Bianconi) last year. Magnus died in September 2023 at age 21.

88 for Street Boss

Closer To Free (2 c ex Lady Naturaliste by Choisir) gave Darley sire Street Boss (Street Cry) an 88th individual stakes winner on Saturday when taking out Caulfield’s Blue Diamond Prelude (C\&G) (Gr 3, 1100m) on debut. Ridden by Michael Dee for Danny O’Brien, the colt enjoyed an ideal run in the race, defeating favourite Guest House (Home Affairs) by a length, with Eternal Warrior (Extreme Warrior) a further 0.15 lengths behind in third. Bred and sold by Milburn Creek, the colt was a $60,000 buy for Polaris Bloodstock at the 2025 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale. Closer To Free is the third foal and first to race out of Cinderella Stakes (Listed, 1050m) winner Lady Naturalise (Choisir). He is from a strong, black type family, with his second dam Calcatta (Tale Of The Cat) and third dam Calchris (Commands) both Listed-level winners. Street Boss stood at Darley’s Northwood Park in Victoria for an unchanged fee of $66,000 (inc GST) in 2025.

36 for Per Incanto

Per Incanto (Street Cry) sired his 36th stakes winner when Oak Hill (5 g ex Isstoora by High Chaparral) landed Saturday’s Rubiton Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) at Caulfield. Ridden by Damian Lane for Ben, JD and Will Hayes, the gelded five-year-old defeated Don’t Hope Do (So You Think) by 0.3 lengths with a further 1.2 lengths back to Hedged (Capitalist) in third place. Oak Hill was bred by the Mahoenui Partnership and is out of the unraced High Chaparral (Sadler’s Wells) mare Isstoora, making him a half-brother to Group 1 winner Desert Lightning (Pride Of Dubai). Per Incanto stood the 2025 breeding season at Little Avondale Stud for a fee of NZ$60,000 (plus GST).

Oakleigh Plate under consideration for Oak Hill

Having landed Saturday's Group 2 Rubiton Stakes, the Lindsay Park-trained Oak Hill could now be set for a crack at the Oakleigh Plate (Gr 1, 1100m) in a fortnight's time. “I love this horse, I’ve won four races on him,” winning rider Damian Lane said. “It’s good to be back on him. He’s been a difficult horse to manage in the past. If you go too forward, he’ll do it the wrong way around and get his head up and over-race. A lot of those early days with Mike [Moroney, previous trainer], it was about teaching him to settle and run. He’s really starting to put it together mentally. He’s always had the talent and you can put him a touch closer and he’s got the turn of foot still.” The Rubiton was Oak Hill’s third win for the Hayes brothers. “That was a terrific effort by Oak Hill,” JD Hayes said. “I thought he put the writing on the wall last start when he returned. We’ve taken all the gear off his head and he’s just starting to really learn his craft. He’s a late learner and a horse that we inherited from the late, great Mike Moroney, and he is getting better each preparation. I think we could look at the Oakleigh Plate now. Why not?”

Observer returns with a bang

Observer (Credit: Racing Photos)

The Ciaron Maher-trained Observer (3 c Ghaiyyath - Smooth by Lonhro) took a big step towards next month’s Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) when making a winning return from a break in Saturday’s Autumn Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Caulfield.

Ridden by Ethan Brown, the Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m)-winning son of Ghaiyyath (Shamardal) hit the front with 300 metres to run and never looked like being caught as he comfortably defeated fellow Guineas aspirant Planet Red (Amire Mars) by 1.3 lengths. There was a further 0.7 lengths back to Victorious Spirit (Ghaiyyath) in third.

“He has matured a lot,” Maher’s assistant trainer Jack Turnbull said. “We’ve taken the Norton bit off and decided to go with the lugging bit today.

“To begin like he did and then for Ethan just to go with him and be in that position and travel so kind, it was good to see from our end. To respond and quicken, first-up off a Derby prep and so lightly raced, it was pretty exciting.

“He’ll be second-up in the Australian Guineas in three weeks which is his early grand final. If we were to be successful then we could go a few different options.

“He’s a classy animal and it was fantastic for us to be training this colt for Godolphin, and to be hitting the ground like that after a Derby prep is very good.”

With a host of possible races for Observer post the Australian Guineas, winning rider Brown was delighted to see the colt scoring over 1400 metres.

“He’s come back from the break really well,” Brown said. “I know it is not his grand final but, gee, a great training performance to win first-up over 1400 metres.

“He can be a bit dour but his last gallop was super. Ciaron has switched him on at the right time. The beauty of it is that he was fresh enough to hold a spot over 1400 so going up in trip he’ll dour out but that he can hold a spot makes it easier for connections, horse and jockey.”

Tom Kitten purrs in Kevin Heffernan

Tom Kitten (Credit: Racing Photos)

Dual Group 1 winner Tom Kitten (5 g Harry Angel - Transfers by Street Cry) was another Godolphin-raced runner to make a winning return from a break on Saturday when taking out the Kevin Heffernan Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) at Caulfield. Ridden by Craig Williams, the Anthony and Sam Freedman-trained gelding produced a big effort to come from the rear of the field and reel in Feroce (Super Seth) by 0.2 lengths at the line. There was a further 3.7 lengths back to Veight (Grunt) in third place. “Craig and I had a chat before the event, and I really wanted to see him [Tom Kitten] not have a gut buster and not have to circle the whole field and make a long run,” Sam Freedman said. “You see when they got going, he [Williams] kept him back, he made his run at the perfect time and it's great to get the horse back in the winners' stall. When you take on a horse like this that has been to the top of the mountain, there's always a bit of pressure. Ultimately, we felt that he'd been running well in the spring but didn't get the rub of the green. We're not getting carried away as it is a fair step down from the level that he has been to, but on his times at home and the way he is carrying condition, he can hopefully get to the level he has been at again."

Alpha Sofie makes it four on the bounce in Peter Le Grand

Having made the move from Queensland-based trainer Jason Edwards to Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman, Alpha Sofie (3 f Capitalist - Sofie’s Gold Class by Hard Spun) added her fourth win on the spin on Saturday when scoring in the Peter Le Grand Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) at Caulfield. Making her debut for the yard, the three-year-old daughter of Capitalist (Written Tycoon) stayed on strongly inside the final 150 metres under Zac Spain to clear away to a 1.5 lengths success over Wintery (Frosted). There was a further 0.2 lengths back to Bel Merci (Extreme Choice) in third. Coleman said connections would not get carried away as to Alpha Sofie’s next target. “Let's not get too far ahead of ourselves but that was really impressive. She couldn't have won more convincingly than that,” she said. "It was a fantastic ride from Zac Spain. He took luck out of the occasion by putting her where she was going to be able to get out and get mobile when she needed to. We haven't got anything set in stone this preparation. We're going to aim to keep her to the short courses. We toyed with the idea of stretching her out to a mile, but I think we know she's got that electric turn of foot over the short distances. We'll keep her to that, but we won't make any decisions on race day. It'll be exciting where she heads to next."

Light Infantry Man displays class in Foundation Cup

Light Infantry Man (7 g Fast Company - Lights On Me by Kyllachy) secured his first stakes success since landing last March’s Australian Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) when displaying his class in Saturday’s Foundation Cup (Gr 3, 1600m) at Caulfield. The Ciaron Maher-trained seven-year-old produced a burst of acceleration entering the final 100 metres to collar long-time leader Regal Zeus (Zoustar) and beat eventual runner-up Immediacy (Tarzino) by 0.2 lengths. The winner’s stablemate Holymanz (Almanzor) finished the same distance further back in third, while Regal Zeus dropped back to a 0.6 lengths fourth.

167 for Snitzel

Late Arrowfield Stud stalwart Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) was provided with his 167th individual stakes winner when Fireball (2 c ex Advance Party by Charge Forward) took out Saturday’s Inglis Millennium 2YO (RL, 1000m) at Randwick. Bred by Michael O’Keeffe and foaled and raised at Yarraman Park, Fireball was purchased by James Harron Bloodstock Colt Partnership and Tony Fung Colts for $460,000 at last year's Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale. He is the second foal and first winner out of the winning Charge Forward (Red Ransom) mare Advance Party, herself a granddaughter of Group 2 winner Countess Christie (Marscay). Advance Party has a yearling filly by Dundeel (High Chaparral) who will be offered in the Yarraman Park draft at Inglis Classic as Lot 614 on Tuesday.

Third for Tassort

Newgate Farm sire Tassort (Brazen Beau) notched up his third stakes winner when Agrarian Girl (2 f ex Liwa by Mulaazem) won Randwick’s Lonhro Plate (Listed, 1000m) on debut. Starting a $31 chance off two trial wins, the filly Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained filly defeated Spicy Miss (Trapeze Artist) by 0.5 lengths under Winona Costin with Savage Look (Wild Ruler) a further 1.7 lengths behind in third. Bred and sold by Emirates Park, the filly was a $280,000 buy for her trainers with Bruce Slade’s Kestrel Thoroughbreds at the 2025 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale. Agrarian Girl is the first foal out of dual Listed winner Liwa (Mulaazem), the mare herself a half-sister to Group 3 winning, Group 1 placegetter Coleman (Pierata). Tassort stood at Newgate Farm in Scone for $38,500 (inc GST) in 2025.

Tempted makes impressive return

Having last been seen running second to sprinting superstar Ka Ying Rising (Shamexpress) in The Everest (Gr 1, 1200m) in October, Tempted (3 f Street Boss - Calliope by Exceed And Excel) confirmed her wellbeing with a dominant performance in Saturday’s Eskimo Sprint Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Randwick.

Using the race as a setup for the Surround Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) on February 28, the Ciaron Maher-trained filly was sent off the odds-on favourite and cruised up on the bridle at the 200 metres before being sent about finishing the race by Chad Schofield.

Clearing away inside the final 150 metres, the daughter of Street Boss (Street Cry) defeated Napoleonic (Wootton Bassett) by 1.3 lengths with a further 1.6 lengths back to the third-placed Wodeton (Wootton Bassett).

“That was a lot of fun,” Schofield, who was having his first ride aboard the filly, said. “She's an aeroplane, really! I knew this race might be very tactical. My two dangers were drawn to my inside and I knew they were not going to let me in easily. So, I pinged her out [the barriers], got her across and I was able to just control the race.

“The speed was good, we all raced off the rail in single file. She was just 'asleep' in my hands, so relaxed, and as we came up the rise I was full of horse. All I had to do was steer!”

Maher's assistant Johan Gerard Dubord said: “When you run second in The Everest as a spring three-year-old, running on through the line, you know you've got a pretty special horse. She has come back really well. She went back to Godolphin to spell and came back looking magnificent.

“Last prep it took her a couple of runs to turn the corner but this time, from day one, couldn't look any better. Everything has been very smooth. Her early target this prep is the Surround in three weeks. It is why we elected to run this week. She would have been better placed against the fillies next week but the three weeks gap works out better.

“A good ride from Chad, everything worked out well. Godolphin has sent us some very nice horses. Very good to deal with. Hard to tell [how much better she has come back]. Physically she has matured. 15 kilograms heavier from last prep and definitely stronger in that regard. Does everything so easily.

“Hard to know what her ceiling is. Certainly, come back as well if not better. How much better is hard to know."

108 for Kingman

Komachi (8 g ex Kamakura by Medaglia D’Oro) became the 108th individual stakes winner for Juddmonte stallion Kingman (Invincible Spirit) when landing Saturday's Premier’s Plate (Listed, 2006m) at Morphettville. Ridden by Rochelle Milnes, the Will Clarken-trained eight-year-old defeated Crimson Vine (Redwood) by 0.5 lengths with a further 0.2 lengths back to Isuspectjeu (Unusual Suspect) in third. Out of the unraced Medaglia D’Oro (El Prado) mare Kamakura, Komachi is a half-brother to Grade 1 winner Be Your Best (Muhaarar). Kingman will stand the 2026 northern hemisphere breeding season at Banstead Manor Stud for a fee of £125,000 (approx. AU$242,480).

25 for Playing God

Darling View Thoroughbreds stallion Playing God (Blackfriars) chalked up his 25th individual stakes winner when Almighty Class (5 g ex My Classy Lady by Oratorio) scored in Saturday’s Cyril Flower Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Ascot. The Trevor Andrews-trained five-year-old, who was ridden by William Pike, registered a 1.6 lengths success over Sky Duke (Playing God). There was a further 1.3 lengths back to London’s Image (Headwater) in third. Out of the unraced Oratorio (Stravinsky) mare My Classy Lady, Almighty Class is a half-brother to three-time winner Soldiers Camp (A Lot). Playing God stood the 2025 breeding season for a fee of $33,000 (inc GST).

McDonald cops suspension

James McDonald has been suspended and fined after being found guilty of excessive use of the whip aboard Fireball in the Inglis Millennium. The champion rider was found to have used the whip nine times prior to the 100 metres, four times more than is permitted under the Australian rules of racing, and 20 times in total. Having been handed a ten-day riding suspension and $20,000 fine at Randwick on Saturday, McDonald will be able to ride at Randwick next Saturday, where his mounts include rising star Autumn Glow (The Autumn Sun) in the Apollo Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m), before beginning his penalty, which will expire on February 25.

26 for Ocean Park

Autumn Glory (Credit: Race Images)

Waikato Stud sire Ocean Park (Thorn Park) sired his 26th individual stakes winner courtesy of the success of Autumn Glory (3 f ex Venus’s Dream by Viscount) in Saturday’s Waikato Guineas (Gr 2, 2000m) at Te Rapa. Ridden by Vinnie Colgan for Roger James and Robert Wellwood, Autumn Glory notched her second win in three starts as she beat Towering Vision (Circus Maximus) by 0.5 lengths. Yamato Satona (Satono Aladdin) finished third, a further 0.3 lengths away. Bred and raced by Monovale Holdings Ltd, Autumn Glory is out of the winning Viscount (Quest For Fame) mare Venus’s Dream, herself a half-sister to the Group 1-placed multiple winner Spring Heat (More Than Ready). Ocean Park stood the 2025 season at a fee of $15,000 (plus GST).

Fillies Classic glory for Ohope Wins

Progressive filly Ohope Wins (3 f Ocean Park - Choux Mania by Redoute’s Choice) warmed up for her tilt at the New Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) when she stormed home late and wide to take out Saturday’s David & Karyn Ellis Fillies Classic (Gr 2, 2100m) at Te Rapa. Carrying the colours of Yulong Thoroughbreds, who purchased her in late January after she had won the Sir Patrick Hogan Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m), the $3.60 favourite scored by 0.5 lengths under Joe Doyle from Single Red (Vanbrugh) with Tajana (Darci Brahma) another 0.4 lengths away in third. Lance O’Sullivan, who prepares the filly in partnership with Andrew Scott said: “It was some performance as she has given them all a big start. Coming to the corner I thought she was going to have to be pretty good and when Joe got her to the outside and gave her clear air she showed she is a filly well above average. The plan has always been to go to the Oaks and we certainly won’t be changing that plan. She looks like she will be very competitive in that and I’m thrilled for Yulong who have come on board. She is fit so it will be just maintenance work now as she is ready [for the Oaks]. We have always thought she would come into her own over a middle distance and she has a beautiful action and one we have always liked.”

157 for Savabeel

Waikato stalwart Savabeel (Zabeel) sired his 157th individual stakes winner when Witz End (5 g ex Gallwitz by Bernardini) struck in Saturday’s Hazlett Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at Wingatui. Now in the care of Terri Rae, the five-year-old, who was partnered by Leah Hemi, beat Pour The Wine (Telperion) by a length with Say Satono (Satono Aladdin) another 0.1 lengths behind in third. A $200,000 buy for his former trainer Tony Pike at the NZB Ready To Run Sale, Witz End is out of the unraced Gallwitz (Bernardini), who herself is a half-sister to stakes winners Retrieve (Rahy), Abduction and Reparations (Exceed And Excel), the four being out of Royal Ascot winner Hold To Ransom (Red Ransom). Savabeel stood the 2025 season at an unchanged fee of $100,000 (plus GST).

Ridden positively by Jamie Melham, the $3 favourite took bad luck out of the equation by racing on speed before proving too strong late, scoring by 0.8 lengths from Chayan with fellow I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) filly I Am Aria another 0.3 lengths back in third.

The victory propelled Streisand to a prominent position in the Blue Diamond Stakes market, firming her to $8 for the Group 1 contest back at Caulfield on February 21.

Streisand had endured a chequered passage when unplaced behind Rubi’s Choice (Rubick) in the fillies' Blue Diamond Preview (Gr 3, 1000m) on her previous start, but McDonald said race experience proved decisive against less seasoned rivals.

“She’s done all the hard yards,” the winning trainer said. “She’s seasoned whereas a lot of these other horses are still learning their craft.”

McDonald combined with Melham to win the Blue Diamond in 2024 with Hayasugi (Royal Meeting), and the trainer was not shy to draw comparisons between the pair.

“She’ll go a long way in the Diamond. I think she’s got the right mental aptitude for it and the toughness. I’ve said all the way along she’s a bit like Hayasugi, understated, tough.

“This one has a bit more bitch about her, I suppose, a bit more temperamental whereas Hayasugi was a sweetheart. We’re happy to put up with her and we’re looking forward to the next two weeks.”

Clinton McDonald

Melham was full of praise for the filly, though she is expected to hand the ride back to her husband Ben Melham on raceday.

“She’s a push button horse and you need that with a two-year-old,” the winning rider said. “She reminds me of Hayasugi. You can ask her to do anything and be anywhere in the race.”

Streisand was purchased for $100,000 by McDonald and bloodstock agent Shane McGrath and is part-owned by former AFL ruckman Michael Gardiner. She is the second foal to race and first winner out of the winning Zoustar (Northern Meteor) mare Zouper Star, a half-sister to stakes winner Best Yet To Come (Econsul) and the Group 3-placed Simply Put (Charge Forward).

In winning Saturday’s race, she became the 33rd individual stakes winner for the late Widden Stud sire Magnus, who died in 2023.

Closer To Free forces his way into Blue Diamond calculations

Danny O’Brien’s rapidly emerging colt Closer To Free (Street Boss) surged into Blue Diamond Stakes contention following his commanding all-the-way debut victory in Saturday’s Prelude (Gr 3, 1100m) (C&G) at Caulfield.

The son of Street Boss (Street Cry) justified a recent Blue Diamond market move, leading throughout under Michael Dee to score a decisive length victory over the Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained Guest House (Home Affairs).

The win saw Closer To Free firm into $6 (from $23) for the Blue Diamond on February 21, having been available at $201 before the wave of support. He now sits on the second line of betting behind Chairman’s Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m) winner Big Sky (Bivouac) ($4.20).

Purchased by O’Brien little more than a week ago following a standout trial at Caulfield Heath, Closer To Free was formerly prepared by respected breaker Adrian Corboy, and the colt’s trial performance was enough to prompt an immediate offer.

“Before the horse left the mounting yard after the trial, I walked back with him and saw how easily he'd taken it,” O’Brien said. “As Adrian was hosing the horse down, I bought him.

“He's a beautiful colt and he's got a proper pedigree. With Street Boss, his first three dams were all two-year-old stakes winners, so there is plenty to like about him.

“I thought he maybe looks a bit burly and might need the run, which is good for two weeks' time. He has an amazing nature. He's a very relaxed, sensible colt and always travels comfortably. I think he's well above average.”

The Prelude victory came after Closer To Free had already advertised his talent by edging out Eternal Warrior (Extreme Warrior) in an 800-metre trial late last month, a clash the pair reprised in Saturday’s feature, with the son of Extreme Warrior (Extreme Choice) finishing 1.2 lengths off the winner in third.

Dee, who won last year’s Blue Diamond aboard Devil Night (Extreme Choice), said Closer To Free had made an immediate impression.

“I saw him live when he trialled at the Heath track and I thought 'oh, what was that thing,' the winning rider said.

“He flies the gates, puts himself there and has a good turn-of-foot. I was very impressed with how well we were able to jump and I thought there would be more pressure in the first furlong.

“He actually gave me a similar feel to what Devil Night did last year. Very similar horse. Same colour, very stocky and built similar. Devil Night raced second [in the Prelude] and we were able to win here today.”

He has an amazing nature. He's a very relaxed, sensible colt and always travels comfortably. I think he's well above average

Danny O'Brien

A $60,000 purchase for Polaris Bloodstock out of the Milburn Creek draft at last year’s Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, Closer To Free is the first foal to race out of the Listed-winning juvenile Lady Naturaliste (Choisir), herself a half-sister to Debutant Stakes (Listed, 1000m) winner Tanker (Pride Of Dubai) out of Tale Of The Cat (Storm Cat) mare Calcatta, also a Listed winner at two.

In winning on Saturday, the colt became the 88th individual stakes winner for Darley’s Street Boss, who enjoyed a stakes double on the day completed by his daughter Tempted in Randwick’s Eskimo Prince Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m). He stood the 2025 season at Northwood Park at an unchanged fee of $66,000 (inc GST).

Fireball explodes in Inglis Millennium

Champion trainer Chris Waller further bolstered his Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) hand after unbeaten colt Fireball (Snitzel) delivered a classy first-up victory in Saturday’s $2 million Inglis Millennium (RL, 1100m) at Randwick.

Resuming from a spell after an impressive debut win at Rosehill in November, the James Harron-owned Fireball powered home down the outside under James McDonald to defeat Ghana’s Akan (Street Boss) by 0.7 lengths as the $4.60 favourite, with Victorian visitor and last-start Blue Diamond Preview (Listed, 1000m) (C&G) winner Alibaba (Alabama Express) another 0.1 lengths away in third.

Fireball (Credit: Inglis)

Waller said the most encouraging aspect of the performance was the colt’s ability to win on raw talent, with improvement still to come.

“He will get stronger, and he’ll get faster. He’s got the frame, he is well-bred,” Waller said. “He hasn’t been wound up to get to today. He wasn’t even going to run unless he drew a nice barrier. I was more than happy to wait and just bide our time.”

The son of Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) settled midfield after an average beginning before McDonald angled him into clear running approaching the home turn, where Fireball quickly asserted.

McDonald admitted there had been concerns about how the colt would cope with the pressure of a large field.

He will get stronger, and he’ll get faster. He’s got the frame, he is well-bred

Chris Waller

“I’ve been saying all week to Chris that the colt is a bit of a ‘dummy’ and I wasn’t sure if he was ready for a test like this,” the winning rider said. “But great credit to Chris, he had faith in the colt and said, ‘he is a very nice horse, as you will see when he is put under pressure’.

“He was put under pressure today and we saw how well he responded.”

Fireball now sits firmly on a Golden Slipper path, though Waller indicated he would avoid clashing the colt with his Canonbury Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) winner Hidrix (Extreme Choice), who is heading towards the Silver Slipper (Gr 2, 1100m) on February 21.

“We’re starting to work them out, which is good,” Waller said. “We’re in no rush and 1200 metres will suit him better, so one of those races coming up.”

Third placegetter Alibaba, ridden by Craig Newitt, also earned strong praise after attacking the line in his Sydney debut.

“He was unbelievable,” Newitt said. “We were strung up in traffic and he smashed the line. He’s a genuine Group 1 colt.”

Bred by Michael O’Keeffe and sold through Yarraman Park for $460,000 at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale, Fireball became the 167th individual stakes winner for his late Arrowfield Stud sire Snitzel, who died last June.

He is the first foal to race out of the Charge Forward (Red Ransom) mare Advance Party, herself out of an unraced Redoute’s Choice (Danehill) half-sister to Listed winner I Have No Fear (Rock Of Gibraltar).

A half-brother to Fireball by Dundeel (High Chaparral) will be on offer at the upcoming Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, catalogued as Lot 614 and set to sell on Tuesday.

Legarto lands second Herbie Dyke as Bosson gets his Group 1 century

NZ Racing Desk

Legarto (Credit: Race Images)

It was apt for Opie Bosson to bring up his 100th Group 1 win on Legends Day at Te Rapa.

The 45-year-old became just the second Kiwi jockey, and first New Zealand-based hoop, to bring up the milestone when piloting the Ken and Bev Kelso-trained Legarto (Proisir) to victory in the Herbie Dyke Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) on Saturday.

He joins Sydney-based Kiwi James McDonald, who boasts 124 elite-level victories to his credit, and Bosson was rapt to reach the mark after returning from retirement just over six months ago, with the record firmly in his sight.

“It is just huge,” Bosson said. “It has taken a lot of hard work out at Te Akau Stud with David Ellis [Te Akau Racing principal]. A lot of people have been involved, Stephen Autridge has been like my rock the whole way through, and I am pleased to have finally got it.”

Bosson struggled to single out a highlight among his many accolades but said his victory aboard Legarto now stands out as one of the best.

“There have been many highlights and to get the 100th today is right up there,” he said. “12 months ago I gave up on 99 and when I came back this was the main goal. To finally get it [is great] and I feel like I am back to riding close to my best. I am pretty happy.”

Bosson, who rides track work regularly for the Kelsos at Matamata, was pleased to bring up the milestone on one of their horses.

“I don’t have many rides for them [Kelsos]. I ride a lot of their good horses in their main gallops,” Bosson said. “It is pretty special to ride my 100th Group 1 for Ken and Bev, they are lovely people and I owe them heaps.”

Ken Kelso also cut an emotional figure post-race, with his wife and training partner unable to be trackside to enjoy the occasion with him.

“It is very special, it is just a crying shame Bev can’t be here to witness it,” he said. “I know it is Opie’s 100th Group 1, but it is our 15th.”

While Legarto had her detractors following a series of winless runs, she was backed into a $3.50 second favourite for the Herbie Dyke, and Kelso was pleased to prove her doubters wrong.

The now six-year-old daughter of Proisir (Choisir) stayed on determinedly to deny Aussie raider Kingswood (Roaring Lion) by 0.4 lengths, with a further 1.6 lengths back to The Odyssey (Zacinto) in third.

“When she loomed up I thought she would be hard to beat,” he said. “Everyone had written her off but she is an Australian Group 1 winner and you can’t take that away from her.

“It’s a great satisfaction. She has had a few setbacks, she did a tendon and had a lot of time off, and she had a foot problem this time with her heel.

“She hasn’t been going bad races, but she still has been running thirds and fourths. She was back on a good deck today at Te Rapa, which she loves, so she was always a chance.”

Now the winner of 11 races, four at elite-level, and nearly $2.6 million in prize-money, Legarto will get another chance to add to that record at Ellerslie next month.

“She will have to go to the Bonecrusher at Auckland, which she is not too fond of. We will just take a deep breath today and savour the moment,” Kelso said.

Ultra-progressive First Five slots another Group 1

Te Rapa-based trainer David Greene is riding the crest of a wave after he doubled his Group 1 tally when First Five (Almanzor) took out the BCD Group Sprint (Gr 1, 1400m) at his home track on Saturday.

Greene recorded his first elite-level success when the Almanzor (Wootton Bassett) five-year-old won last month’s Telegraph (Gr 1, 1200m) at Trentham, and he was confident he would go close to keeping his undefeated record over 1400 metres intact on Saturday.

First Five (Credit: Race Images)

Despite his last-start heroics, First Five jumped a $7.50 fourth favourite in a market headed by Lindsay Park raiders Arkansaw Kid (Harry Angel) ($3.20) and Here To Shock (Shocking) ($3.40), and the Australian duo took a stranglehold of the race, sitting in the first two and dictating the early tempo.

Jockey Wiremu Pinn guided First Five into the trail behind Here To Shock, and while the two pacemakers began to open up on the pack, Pinn kept a cool head and didn’t ask his charge to extend until turning for home.

First Five immediately responded to Pinn’s urgings, bounding up alongside the pacemakers and quickly put several lengths on them, and he was able to hold off the late challenge of Sterling Express (Shamexpress) to win by 1.7 lengths.

“I was shocked to see the TAB had opened him up at $13,” Pinn said. “He is just an absolute machine and I thought he played with them today.

“It panned out perfectly. I had myself mapped to be outside Here To Shock, but there was a little more speed than I thought. They ran at a genuine pace, which was good, we were in a good rhythm, never spent a penny and he has blown them away.

“He is very special, I think he can win a Group 1 at 1200 metres and 2000 metres. He has got a very bright future.”

Greene was overwhelmed by the enormity of what had transpired, and he was thrilled to get the home Group 1 victory for his group of supporters.

“There is a huge crowd for him here today and what a win, he just dominated them,” Greene said. “He brained a really good field and that’s how good he is, he is a really top-class horse.

“His work on Tuesday was unreal, he just gets better and better, it is amazing.”

Greene is now looking to test his charge over more ground in the WFA Classic (Gr 1, 1600m) at Ellerslie in a fortnight, with a long-range goal of testing First Five’s talent across the Tasman next spring.

“I guess we will run up at Ellerslie in a couple of weeks and give him a go over a mile,” he said. “There is not really much else left for him unless he is crossing the ditch, which is a difficult thing to do at this late stage of the prep. There is no reason why that isn’t something he can do in the spring.”

Bred by part-owner Gerald Shand, First Five is by Almanzor out of six-win mare Payette (Volksraad). It was a lucrative day at Te Rapa for the family, with his full-brother Rambling On coming up 0.2 lengths short of victory in the $350,000 Sir Patrick Hogan Karapiro Classic (1600m) earlier on the card.

First Five has now won eight of his 20 starts, including two at elite-level, and has earned north of $810,000 in prize-money.
