Western Australia’s premier yearling auction returns to the Swan Valley this week, with 358 lots catalogued for the 2026 Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale, which gets underway on Thursday.

The two-day auction brings together a broad cross-section of yearlings by proven Western Australian stallions with a wave of emerging sires. All told, a total of 79 stallions are represented, headed by champion local sire Playing God (Blackfriars) with 52 yearlings.

Youngsters by Group 1 winners Artorius (Flying Artie), Paulele (Dawn Approach), State Of Rest (Starspangledbanner) and Stronger (Not A Single Doubt) feature among the offerings, alongside local newcomers Aysar (Deep Field), Lightsaber (Zoustar) and Marine One (Capitalist).

What's On

Inspections have drawn a strong local and interstate buying bench, with trainers Grant and Alana Williams, Neville Parnham, Simon Miller, Luke Fernie and Dan Morton among those on the ground, while visitors from the eastern seaboard include Sheamus Mills, Calvin McEvoy and Damon Gabbedy, Annabel Archibald, Johnny McKeever, Andy Makiv and First Light Racing.

Interest in the sale has no doubt been bolstered by its leading graduates, a roll of honour which has been added to his season and includes Railway Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Watch Me Rock (Awesome Rock), King Of Light (Earthlight), winner of the WA Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m); Lee Steere Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) scorer Super Smink (Super One), Buckets Ridge (Pride Of Dubai), who landed the Towton Cup (Listed, 2200m) in December and Listed-winning trio Luana Miss (Bivouac), Rope Them In (Playing God) and Toropa (Toronado).

Among vendors who were generating significant attention during inspections was Mogumber Park, whose graduate Maria Lucia (Rommel) landed Saturday’s Magic Millions WA 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) at Pinjarra. The Bullsbrook-based operation will offer a draft of 22 yearlings, including 14 by their resident first-season sire Marine One.

Located just north of Perth, the farm operated by Colin Brown and Fiona Lacey has produced the winners of the past two runnings of the WA Magic Millions 2YO Classic - both from the mare Mindarie (Safeguard).

“We won the two-year-old Classic last year with that mare’s first foal, Do I Feel Lucky, and Maria Lucia is her second foal,” Brown told ANZ News amid a busy inspection period on Wednesday.

Unfortunately, the farm was forced to withdraw the pair’s A Lot (Tapit) half-brother from this week’s sale.

“Her third foal was all set and we had to withdraw him, but hopefully he will go to winter here. He'll still qualify for the two year old race next year, but you can't bring a horse that's not 100 per cent to the sales.”

Of Maria Lucia, Brown said the win was especially meaningful and believes the filly has a bright future ahead.

“The Casey’s who train her, they’re a hardworking family, really talented trainers. The sons train, as well as the dad. We’re both family businesses, so it's extra special to see them win.

“I think she could be a bit special that filly. She's different from Do I Feel Lucky in personality. He was quick early. She looks like she will have longevity and she could really develop into a good horse. They're happy not to push her along, but she's saying ‘c’mon let’s have a go.’”

Adding further significance to the weekend’s success, Twisted Steel, the winner of the Magic Millions 3YO Classic (RL, 1200m) was conceived at Mogumber Park when they stood Rommel (Commands) before he relocated to Ridgeport.

“We had Rommel at our place when Twisted Steel was conceived. He was lovely, we loved him. He then went to the major owner of Rommel who built a property and he always wanted to stand him, so he moved there.”

Mogumber Park will present the first progeny of their Rubiton Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) winner Marine One, and Brown said the son of Capitalist’s (Written Tycoon) progeny had been well received throughout inspections.

“From an industry perspective, it's really nice to have three first season sires and it's really nice for each of them to have a good number - they're all in and around 20,” Brown said.

“For Marine One, the words we're getting consistently are ‘gee he stamps them.’ They look strong, but not heavy. They look really athletic. You're not going to die wondering, you're not going to have to wait till they're four. They'll be up and about early, which is why we did the bonus, the credit that we will give if you win a two-year-old race.”

“One of the major things apart from how they look - in terms of strong shoulders, deep girth, nice hind-quarter, they walk nicely - but they've got Marine One's personality. All of them are easy to work with. They're smart horses and they want to learn. The ones that came down here, you can see they've all settled in nicely.

Lot 145: Marine One ex Clarecastle colt (Credit: Magic Millions)

“When you launch a stallion, you've got to get a horse that you want to have. I just say we're constantly ticking the boxes, and every box he's had to tick so far, he has ticked it. There's strong interest in him.

“We're very biased. We'll talk him up, but it's other people talking him up which is really nice. People are coming here and they're not leaving disappointed. He has been received really well. I know people will buy them.”

Confident Marine One’s first crop can deliver early racetrack results, Mogumber Park has launched a ‘Buy and Win Bonus’, where purchasers of a Marine One yearling from the draft will receive a $20,000 credit towards a 2027 Mogumber Park yearling if that horse wins a two-year-old race before Magic Millions 2027.

“We did it with Safeguard when we launched him a few years ago,” Brown said. “It's saying to people, ‘we appreciate the fact that you're coming and buying a first-season sire’ and I guess at another level, it's a marketing tool. We can advertise around it and people will look at it. But we really do have faith in him. It's a risk that we'll take and people hopefully come back and look at our draft next year.”

Brown said early racetrack success is key when launching a young stallion.

“We had four horses that we sold last year in the Magic Millions two-year-old race this year. Of the 26 nominations, eight of them were from our draft. We've got half relations to each of those. So there's a fair chance they'll get a boot along in terms of racing early.

“If you're starting off a stallion you need to think about how you get the runs on the board as early as you can. And that doesn't mean pre-Christmas, that doesn't mean pushing them along, but a lot of our families have two year old form through them.”

Despite the depth of Marine One’s first crop, Brown admitted Lot 145 carries the strongest emotional attachment for the farm.

Lot 68: So You Think ex Rocket Fuel filly (Credit: Magic Millions)

He is the final foal from Clarecastle, the granddam of stakes winners Do I Feel Lucky and Maria Lucia. The Group 3-placed mare produced ten foals to race for nine winners, including Listed winner Castle Road (Safeguard) and the stakes-placed trio Specialism (Safeguard), Royal Strata (Stratum) and More Special (Safeguard).

“He is probably the one we have the most emotional attachment to because we call him Omega. He's the last of the Clarecastles. She's got a two-year-old that's starting on Saturday, and that's the only one that she's bred that's gone to the races that hasn't won a race yet, but she's only having her third race start.

“They all win and many are stakes-placed. We lost her [Clarecastle] last year, so emotionally, she might have left the best to last. He is a super horse and a lovely family. We'll be sad to see him go. He's the one that there'll be a lot of tears for when the hammer goes down.”

The draft also features Lot 68, a filly by the late Coolmore Stud stallion So You Think (High Chaparral) from Group 3 placegetter Rocket Fuel (Smart Missile), who was picked up by Mogumber for $130,000 carrying the filly at the 2024 Magic Millions Gold Coast National Broodmare Sale.

“There's been good interest in her,” Brown said. “It doesn't matter whether people pay $100 or $1 million for a horse, they'll talk about its walk. This filly would be the nicest, naturally walking horse on the complex - she’s a standout, a lovely filly.”

Based on the atmosphere around the complex, Brown said he remained optimistic heading into the sale.

“We always move into a sale optimistically. If you go in ‘glass half empty’, you're in the wrong business. But I believe there's been more foot traffic this year than last year. I haven't looked at my cards from last year, but the complex has been constantly busy. There haven't been any low spots or dead spots.

“There’s people that come every year and people we haven't seen before. Steve Vardy, who was here earlier, this was his first visit to Perth. That's Magic Millions’ job to do that, and so far, they're getting feet on the ground.”

Magic Millions Western Australia manager David Houston echoed that optimism, confident the sale would continue to deliver strong results.

“Three of the last four years, we've had the biggest clearance in Australasia,” Houston told ANZ News. “It dropped away a little bit last year. We've been one of the very few, maybe the only, sale that's had an upward spiral through those three or four years. We've come a long way for a small sale in a small jurisdiction to get to where we have.

“We've been getting very good support both locally and interstate and the horses coming out of here have been performing. That's the beauty of this sale - we get the best of the horses from here in WA and I think that our clientele, whether it's local or interstate, appreciate that, and they come back and support it.

“There are some new faces here. We love seeing the old faces back again, but super to have some very new faces here and people who have never been here before, obviously, and finding stock that they feel have got real potential, so that's good. The locals, they do really support their own and we're looking forward to that to continue.

“The result I would be happy with is to maintain. We'd love to be growing, and we may well do, too. So hopefully the bottom line is going to be as strong or stronger than it has been in the last year or so. The quality of horses across the board is very strong and that's been reiterated to me by a number of people going around the grounds and seeing the horses.”

The sale gets under way at 11am (Perth time).

Morning Briefing

Australia

First for Palace Pier

Darley’s former shuttler Palace Pier (Kingman) registered his first winner in Australia when Wolf Gap (2 c ex Bandol by Snitzel) landed an 1100-metre maiden on debut at Warwick Farm on Wednesday. Ridden by Nash Rawiller for Anthony and Sam Freedman, the juvenile colt came home well inside the final 200 metres to join Naadra (Tassort) on the line and score by 0.1 lengths in a photo-finish. There was a further 3.1 lengths back to Lorax (Zoustar) in third place. “He's shown the team good ability at home and still sort of trying to learn by his mistakes, so to speak,” Rawiller said. “You know, I feel like he's been able to come here today and probably do a couple things wrong and still show the will and determination to win the race, which I think is very important. Great effort and definitely a horse on the way up.” Bred by the Arrowfield Group and Cloros Bloodstock, Wolf Gap was purchased for $280,000 by Anthony Freedman Racing, Julian Blaxland Bloodstock, ARJB Racing and De Burgh Equine from the Arrowfield Stud draft at the 2025 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. He is the fourth winner from as many to race out of the Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) mare Bandol, making him a half-brother to the Group-placed winner Katsumi Orochi (Maurice) and winner Bandasha (Shalaa). A half-brother to Wolf Gap, by Maurice (Screen Hero), will be sold as Lot 65 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast March Yearling Sale. Miss Match has been covered by Arrowfield Stud’s new shuttler Vandeek (Havana Grey).

Maiden-chasing I Am Aria to tackle Blue Diamond

I Am Aria (I Am Invincible) may be a maiden heading into Saturday's Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m), but she is not your usual maiden. The Mark Walker-trained filly has made two starts to date, running second on debut in the Blue Diamond Preview (F) (Gr 3, 1000m) before a last-start third in the Blue Diamond Prelude (F) (Gr 2, 1100m). Walker's assistant trainer Ben Gleeson is convinced the Preview and Prelude form, the filly's and colts and geldings' divisions, is the strongest form heading into this weekend's Group 1 for which I Am Aria sits as a $34 chance after drawing barrier six. "She's a filly that puts herself in the race and has led up, unfortunately, in two starts without having a backside to follow," Gleeson said. "She's been very gallant in defeat. She's probably been entitled to drop out, but she's been there whacking away at the finish. If she can find a backside on Saturday, she's going to appreciate stepping up to 1200 [metres] and hopefully she's finishing off. You probably don't expect an I Am Invincible filly to get here, especially with the physique she has. She's a big, strong three-year-old type of filly and whatever she does now she is going to be better in the spring. She's has copped the work, she's very sound and has a fantastic mind. She's always shown us the characteristics that she could get here. To run second and third in the Preview and the Prelude, there's probably no better form and history probably shows horses that run in those two are the ones that are generally around the mark on final day. She's done nothing wrong, anyway."

Treasurethe Moment all set for Futurity return

Matt Laurie's stable star Treasurethe Moment (Alabama Express) is set to make her return to the racetrack on Saturday when tackling Caulfield's Futurity Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m). The four-year-old mare has been off the track since running fourth in the Champions Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) on November 8, and headed to Caulfield for a final gallop under regular rider Damian Lane on Tuesday. "I couldn't be more proud of the horse and in her last three preparations she's been able to knock off some Group 1s, and hopefully she can do it for a fourth time," Laurie said. "I've got a similar feeling as when we went into the Memsie, but I'm not sure where the speed is going to be in this particular race. Damian will just ride our horse how he finds her on the day. I think she is in a good headspace and ready to go." Laurie has revealed that another tilt at the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m), a race she finished third in last year, is very much on the agenda. "She's a bit older, a bit stronger and she's very aware every time we put her on a track nowadays," he said. "I can't wait to kick her off and see where the preparation leads. Coming into this preparation I was of the feeling that I would give her a light one, give her a nice break for another crack at the Cox Plate. We'll run in the Futurity, then the All-Star Mile then we'll play it by ear after that. She's an incredible horse and I feel very privileged to have her."

Blinkers remain on Attica in Hobartville

Last-start Champion Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) winner Attica (Lonhro) is another big name that will be making his return on Saturday when he takes on the Hobartville Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Rosehill. The three-year-old colt has produced three fairly average performances at the barrier trials, but his trainer Joe Pride is confident that they have been reflective of his lackadaisical attitude rather than his current condition. Attica will wear blinkers for this weekend's Group 2 contest, something he has worn for both his wins in the Dulcify Stakes (Listed, 1600m) and Champion Stakes. "There has been a bit said about the trial, but he is the most laidback horse in my stable," Pride said. "You're flat-out getting him to walk sometimes. He is just so casual and when he gets the blinkers on, he is a different horse so he will have them on first-up. He is absolutely primed. I'm so happy with him. There is no mucking around with colts. They've got to be ready to go right from the start of the prep and he is ready to go. He's got the Randwick Guineas second-up and that is one of his big aims."

Guineas-bound Autumn Boy in good nick

Chris Waller has eyes on another Guineas success with Autumn Boy (The Autumn Sun) this campaign, with the colt set to return in Saturday's Hobartville Stakes. The son of The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice) landed the Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) when last seen in competitive action on October 11, and Waller hopes he can add the Randwick Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) to his haul providing this weekend's effort is a good one. “He’ll be tested through the autumn, there’s some good races on offer and he might get a sniff of racing against the older horses as well,’’ the champion trainer told Racing NSW. “He has developed, I’m not sure how much, he’s just learnt to be a racehorse. He’s ticked the box that he’s a Group 1 horse and runs a strong mile. He’ll go to the Randwick Guineas then we’ll decide if it’s the George Ryder or where we are going. If he got 50 kilograms he’ll be running in the Doncaster but he won’t have 50 kilograms.” On the recommendation of James McDonald, Autumn Boy will be racing without the blinkers this weekend. “He’s a beautiful horse, a lovely animal,’’ Waller continued. “He was very relaxed in the pre-parade, he was relaxed going around, had a beautiful action and quickened up nicely. He’s a really nice horse, simple as that. He could be a clerk of the course that’s what he’s like, he has a great temperament. We’re learning about him, we’re going to leave the blinkers off. James doesn’t think he needs them.”

Dwyer to have pair of runners in Tasmanian Oaks

Ballarat-based trainer Henry Dwyer will have a pair of runners in Friday's Tasmanian Oaks (Listed, 2100m) as he bids to extend the recent winning run of visiting trainers in the Listed contest. A total of seven of the last ten editions of the race have been won by horses trained outside Tasmania, and Dwyer will have both Aurora Rise (The Autumn Sun) and Zuleika (North Pacific) in the contest. Aurora Rise has already run in Tasmania, having finished second behind Daytona Diva (Anders) in the Strutt Stakes (Listed, 2020m) at Hobart on February 8. “We went down there thinking she’d be competitive but might just need it a bit. She’ll be better for that, and you’d think the form will stack up,” Dwyer told Racing.com. “A lot of the Victorians are the same class of horse. If Crack The Shutters is issue-free, she’s probably the measuring stick.” Joining Aurora Rise will be last-start Kyneton maiden winner Zuleika. “It was a weaker sort of maiden, but she boxed seated and really put them away through the line. She’s come on terrifically since that run, too; she galloped super on Monday morning at Ballarat, so I think she’ll go there and make her presence felt," Dwyer said. “Aurora Rise is the one we’ve always set for the race, and we thought it would be a good spot for her, but Zuleika has probably sneaked up on us a bit, and we didn’t expect to be going down. But when they win a mile maiden like that, it’s probably her chance to get that black type.”

Rosehill Guineas likely path for Decorum

Tommy Berry has drawn comparisons between Group 1 winner Attica and the Michael Freedman-trained Decorum (Snitzel), whom he rode to a third win from four starts at Warwick Farm on Wednesday. The three-year-old was making it two-from-two this preparation as he justified his odds-on market position with a half-length success over Lancelot Du Lac (Flying Artie) in a Benchmark 72 (1600m), with Berry mentioning the Rosehill Guineas (Gr 1, 2000m) as a race the colt may relish. "I just can't wait to get him to 2000 [metres]. He feels like he's looking for that sort of ground," the winning rider said. "There is definitely a good race in him. I'm just not sure which one it is. Not that I've ridden Attica, but I've seen plenty of him, he reminds me a little bit of him a prep ago, so he's a prep behind him. He's one of those horses, he's a real working class horse and when the penny drops, which probably won't be until the spring, he's just going to keep going the way he's going. The Randwick Guineas might be a little bit sharp for him, but you've probably got to go there on your way to a Rosehill Guineas." Decorum is the second foal out of the imported Group 3-winning mare Ms Bad Behavior (Blame), making him a brother to Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Switzerland. A brother to Decorum will be sold as Lot 451 at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

Cannae scores at second time of asking

A shot at a Derby was mentioned for Cannae (Maurice) on Wednesday after the three-year-old gelding secured his maiden victory at the second attempt. Lining up in a 1500-metre maiden at Caulfield Heath, having run fourth on debut at Sandown-Hillside in January, the son of Maurice proved 0.4 lengths too strong for Peeaitchdee (So You Think). Danny O'Brien paid $20,000 to secure Cannae at the Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale. "I really liked him at the sales, and he was in the last 20 lots and was one of those ones that fell through the cracks, so I thought I'd give this one a crack myself," the trainer said. "I'll spec some, keep some to trade, and some to race. He was never going to be a horse that showed up in 800-metre trials. He was always going to be one that had to develop into being this type of racehorse. There is a decent enough market for these sorts of horses and Hong Kong loves these sorts of horses, three-year-old's that are still lightly raced with the potential of getting to the [Victoria] Derby."

Ceolwulf cleared after vet checks

Ceolwulf (Tavistock) remains on track for the Australian Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) and Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) this autumn after being given the all clear from vets and stewards after a post-Apollo Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) bleeding scare. The Group 1-winning five-year-old had blood in both nostrils following his first-up sixth in Saturday’s Apollo but a raceday scope found no evidence that the blood originated from the trachea. A follow-up investigation found that the blood instead originated from his nasal cavity. “Acting on the report provided by a specialist equine veterinarian, and the subsequent recommendation provided to stewards by Dr Garling, stewards are satisfied that the presence of blood in the nostrils of Ceolwulf following the race in question was as a result of external trauma,” Racing NSW stated via a press release. “Accordingly, Ceolwulf will not be subject to the embargoes imposed under AR79 which deals with horses that have suffered from EIPH [exercise induced pulmonary haemorrhage].”

Zahra ‘pretty close’ to comeback

Mark Zahra has revealed he is hoping to be back from injury in time to ride Tentyris (Street Boss) in the Newmarket Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) at Flemington on March 7. Zahra fractured his leg in an incident at the jump-outs on January 15 and has been out since. “I feel like I’ve done everything I can, from the very start, for it to heal as quick as possible… I reckon I’m pretty close,” the rider told The Verdict. Zahra still maintains a healthy lead in the Victorian Metro Premiership despite the injury layoff, with chaser Blake Shinn also sidelined. “The last two weeks have been the worst, by far,” Zahra said. “You watch Observer win, and then Tentyris win. But I try and put everything into perspective. I got a trip to the Super Bowl out of it. I mean, Blake Shinn, who had his injury, is far worse off. I was much more lucky, compared to him. As angry as I’ve been, I’ve been trying to put things into a bit of perspective.”

O'Brien to sell Thirteenth Beach Training Centre

Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m)-winning trainer Danny O’Brien is selling his Thirteenth Beach Training Centre property on the Bellarine Peninsula as he reduces his string of horses from the 120-140 range down to around 80. “We just had an evaluation of all of our business towards the end of last year and figured that rather than training 120-140 horses like we have for the last five or six years, we’d like to get down to about 80,” O’Brien told Racing.com. “In doing that, we really only need two venues now, not three. Particularly with the recommitment to Flemington, there’s going to be a lot of money spent on Flemington over the next few years, upgrading the facilities here. We’re going to keep the Flemington and Geelong bases, the property at Barwon Heads we’re probably not going to need now that we’re going to streamline things a bit. It’s been a fantastic property for us, and we’ll be sad to see it go but the way we’re going to structure things going forward, we’ll just have a Geelong base and a Flemington base.”

Kheir selects Asakura for NZB The Kiwi slot

Asakura (Credit: Racing Photos)

The NZB Kiwi (Listed, 1500m) is set to have direct Australian involvement with the announcement on Wednesday that Ozzie Kheir has selected the Mitch Freedman-trained Asakura (Churchill) for his slot in the $4 million Champions Day feature.

With unbeaten filly Well Written (Written Tycoon) dominating calculations as the $1.20 favourite, doubts had been expressed that unlike last year’s inaugural NZB Kiwi when eventual runner-up Evaporate (Per Incanto) as well as Perfumist (El Roca) and Public Attention (Written Tycoon) made the trip to Auckland, there might be no Australian runners.

Asakura, who has two wins and a second from his first three starts, stepped up to black type competition in the CS Hayes Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) at Flemington last Saturday and finished second to the $1.60 favourite Sixties (Flying Artie).

“He’s what I would describe as a progressive young horse that has still got a lot of improvement in him,” Freedman said.

“As we saw last Saturday he still does a few things wrong, but he’s learning all the time and we see the Kiwi as a good option for him at this stage.

“That was his first time at 1400 metres and the step up to 1500 should work for him, especially if there’s good tempo which I imagine would be the case given the race it is.

“It’s a very attractive stake and while that filly [Well Written] looks very good, we felt it was still worth going across for.”

Confirmation of NZB Kiwi plans for Asakura has cemented his place as the $8 equal-second favourite alongside Belle Cheval (Savabeel), who has her final lead-up in Saturday’s Uncle Remus Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) at Ellerslie.

Fly Zenno to fulfil Oaks dream for connections

Talented staying filly Fly Zenno (Ancient Spirit) will line up in Saturday’s New Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) at Ellerslie, a target her connections have held close since day one. Prepared by Conor and Sarah Fahy, the daughter of Ancient Spirit (Invincible Spirit) has been just behind the minor placings at her past two outings, finishing fifth in the Sir Patrick Hogan Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m) before a solid fourth in the David & Karyn Ellis Fillies Classic (Gr 2, 2100m) at Te Rapa. On both occasions, Fly Zenno was comfortably held by Ohope Wins (Ocean Park), who will start a warm favourite in Saturday’s Oaks. But with a more positive running style than many of her rivals and the make and shape of a Classic filly, Fly Zenno looks likely to give her emerging trainers a run for their money. “We have been quite soft on her because as much as we were hoping she was an Oaks filly, she is still probably a preparation away from being at her very best,” Conor Fahy said. “We are hoping that she will get the distance but at the same time we haven’t pushed her to get there. If Ohope Wins gets the run of the race, I’d say she will be extremely hard to beat. It is probably the wrong year for a small stable like us to have a filly for the Oaks. It looks like one of the strongest Oaks fields in recent memory. There is really good depth in the race and we are a maiden going in, so we are under no illusions.”

McNab keen to resume raceday competition

After having to endure another stint on the sideline in his roller-coaster career, dual premiership-winning jockey Michael McNab is looking forward to his raceday return at Ellerslie this weekend. McNab, who won back-to-back premierships in the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons, has been off the scene since early September after suffering a complicated leg fracture when kicked by a young horse he was about to mount at an Ellerslie trial meeting. The initial prognosis was for a six to eight-week recovery, but with a plate and screws having to be inserted in what turned out to be a more serious fracture, his recovery has taken more than five months. “When it happened I went for x-rays in Auckland Hospital that night and they said it was a fracture of the bone just below my knee,” McNab said. “Then when I got home more x-rays and scans revealed how bad it really was and I knew then it was going to be a long recovery. I was in a lot of pain and not quite able to understand what the surgeon was telling me, but as well as a plate and screws they inserted some sort of animal bone to help rebuild the missing bone at the top of my tibia. I’m just happy to be back. I’m feeling good, the workout sessions have got me fit with my cardios and everything, and my weight is only about 1.5 kilos above what I’ve normally been able to make, so that will come back down pretty quickly. I’ve been back riding trackwork and had my first day at the trials on Tuesday, so that’s all gone really well. I’ve decided to ease back into raceday and I’ve taken just the two rides [Pier and Bulgari] on Saturday."

FR: Sale-topper Dante Nonantais to join McEvoy stable, Dwyer also buys

Recent Deauville winner Dante Nonantais (Hunter’s Light) will continue his career in Australia after he was purchased by Terry Henderson’s OTI and Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m)-winning trainers Tony and Calvin McEvoy for €180,000 (approx. AU$300,790) during the second and final session of the Arqana February Mixed Sale on Wednesday. The son of Hunter’s Light (Dubawi) was a good return on investment for Florian Bellemere who purchased the gelding for only €5,500 last September. There was more antipodean flavour in Deauville on Wednesday when Henry Dwyer teamed up with Amy Murphy to buy Recollect (Recoletos) for €120,000 (approx. AU$200,560). Murphy signed the docket and said: “He was bought for Henry Dwyer to go to Australia. Henry and I had a very successful partnership this summer with Asfoora [stabled with Amy Murphy during her European campaign, ed.]. He’s a horse who really caught Henry’s eye.”

Roll The Dice aiming to gatecrash the Blue Diamond party

This Saturday’s meeting at Caulfield shapes as a potentially defining day for Roll The Dice Racing with the syndicator’s first ever runner in the Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) set to be joined by one of the leading chances in the Oakleigh Plate (Gr 1, 1100m),

A joint purchase with Mick Price Racing and bloodstock agent Jeremy Rogers, Guest House (Home Affairs) will be out to deliver a third victory in the Blue Diamond for his trainer and a first elite-level success for Home Affairs (I Am Invincible), whose speedy son Kinnaird laid down an early marker in the Eclipse Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Ellerlise on New Year’s Day.

The Coolmore resident is set to have two runners in this year’s Blue Diamond field and the pair will be eyeballing one another in the gates, with Guest House assigned barrier three and the twice-raced Tulloch Lodge maiden Lady Moscato directly to his inside.

Given the propensity for runners from the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott stable to take up the lead, a high-stakes speed battle could play out but in light of the resistance Guest House showed when he was restrained when finishing second in the Blue Diamond Prelude (Gr 3, 1100m), Jamie Melham may have no option but to bend to her mount’s will.

That is certainly the view of Roll The Dice’s director of racing and communications Steve Travaglia, who is fervently hoping the robust colt or their Oakleigh Plate contender Hedged (Capitalist) can take the syndicator’s tally of Group 1 wins to three on Saturday.

Globe’s (Charm Spirit) freewheeling triumph in last year’s Might And Power Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) and Krone’s (Eurozone) Coolmore Classic (Gr 1, 1500m) win in 2021 were both achieved against the odds, whereas victory for Guest House would not come as a major surprise given his position on the second line of betting behind his Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained stablemate Big Sky (Bivouac).

As with any athlete, however, the ability to peak on the grand occasion is what separates the champion racehorses from the merely very good ones and Travaglia does not underestimate the importance to their burgeoning business of winning one of Australian racing’s most coveted contests.

“It would obviously be massive for us to win a Blue Diamond, especially with our first runner in the race,” he told ANZ News.

“We’ve been going very well but any syndication company will tell you that you need to win these big races to really succeed and grow your business. It’s great to win Listed and Group 3 races but you can’t go too long between drinks in Group 1s, because you can be forgotten pretty quickly in this game.

“So we’re very keen to pick another one off on Saturday, and we think we’ve got a good chance with Guest House. He just can’t afford to make the same mistakes on Saturday that he did in the Prelude, because he’ll have no chance of winning the race.

It’s great to win Listed and Group 3 races but you can’t go too long between drinks in Group 1s, because you can be forgotten pretty quickly in this game

Steve Travaglia

“He’s proven in the past that he doesn’t like being held up, and he can get too aggressive if you try to restrain him. As long as he jumps well and nothing crosses him, I would imagine he’ll be out in front from that gate. He had his final gallop at Cranbourne on Tuesday morning, he’s always been a good track worker and all the reports from the team are that he’s right where he needs to be.

“When there’s not much between these two-year-olds, it often comes down to which horse is able to get things right on the day. I’d say there are at least ten winning chances in the race, Unit Five looks pretty ‘bomb-proof’ and Closer To Free was very professional on debut. So they’ll both be tough to beat and the chances certainly don’t end there.

“We’re just happy to have one of the leading hopes on such a big day, we bought this colt with a view to having a runner in a race like the Blue Diamond and it’s nice that the plan has paid off. We always thought he would be up and running as a two-year-old, if you look at him in the mounting yard you’d think he was at least three.”

At $270,000, Guest House was the second most expensive purchase Travalgia and the Roll The Dice team made at last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale behind Wolf Gap (Palace Pier), the $$280,000 buy who made a winning debut for Anthony and Sam Freedman at Warwick Farm on Wednesday afternoon.

Travalgia also believes that the Shalaa (Invincible Spirit) filly they bought at the same sale for $60,000 will furnish into an accomplished performer in time, given the prowess she has shown in her jump-outs to date.

The as-yet-unnamed filly is trained by Gavin Bedggood, who will saddle up Hedged in the other sprint feature on Saturday’s lucrative Caulfield card.

It is fair to say that, given his sometimes maddening inconsistency, the five-year-old has not always been the punters’ pal, so taking the $5 generally on offer in the early markets is perhaps fraught with risk. In his defence, however, barring a below-par effort when beating just one rival home in the Standish Handicap (Gr 3, 1200m) Hedged has acquitted himself very creditably this preparation, with a pair of stakes wins beside his name in the form guide.

The fact that he is being asked to carry the topweight of 59 kilograms would suggest that this is not necessarily a vintage renewal of the Oakleigh Plate, but on the basis that you can only beat what is put in front of you, Travalgia gives the enigmatic performer a fighting chance of making his Group 1 breakthrough.

Never in my wildest dreams did I envisage he would be carrying topweight in an Oakleigh Plate, so I’m still scratching my head how that has happened

Steve Travaglia

“He’s maybe a slightly maligned horse but he’s been going really well this prep,” Travalgia told ANZ News.

“Never in my wildest dreams did I envisage he would be carrying topweight in an Oakleigh Plate, so I’m still scratching my head how that has happened. But that’s the cards we’ve been dealt, and we couldn’t be happier with his form heading into the race.

“Caulfield’s probably not his favourite track, I’d be much more confident if the race was held at Flemington or Pakenham. But for a horse who has been known for his inconsistency, other than his poor run down the Flemington straight, he’s been racing really consistently this campaign. We’ve had some inquiries about the Quokka, so hopefully he can run well on Saturday because we’d love to take him over to WA for a big-money race like that.

“It looks a very open Oakleigh Plate, if Sam and Anthony’s three-year-old filly [Point Barrow] turns up, then she’s probably going to be very hard to beat with just 50 kilos on her back. To give a horse like that nine kilos is going to be a tough ask for Hedged, but with her racing style she’ll probably need some luck which you don’t always find at Caulfield. Hedged doesn’t like to be cluttered up between horses, so if we can get a nice clean run then we’re in with a good chance.”

The success they have experienced with Hedged persuaded the Roll The Dice crew to invest in his three-quarter brother on the Gold Coast at the start of the year, with the Yulong-bred Written Tycoon (Iglesia) colt set to join his elder sibling at Bedggood’s yard once he has been broken in.

“It wasn’t only the fact that he was a three-quarter to Hedged that we decided to buy him,” said Travalgia.

“He’s a lovely colt by a champion stallion. He’s quite different to Hedged in some ways, but he still had the same lovely walk on him which is what we liked about both of them. We thought we’d have to pay a bit more for him, we thought he was worth between $350,000 to $400,000 so I reckon we got him for a pretty good price at $330,000.”

Lonhro (Octagonal) over Street Cry (Machiavellian) and a tripling of the great Mr. Prospector (Raise A Native) are among the forces behind Weeping Woman, who claimed her second successive black type victory and fourth straight win in Saturday’s Triscay Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Randwick on Saturday.

The Joe Pride-trained five-year-old is the latest star performer to trickle down from second dam She’s Purring (Flying Spur), the fountainhead of much success for Ian Cornell, a Sydney-based hobby breeder, retired retail executive, and former Inglis board member.

In 1999, Cornell bought She’s Purring via his long-term bloodstock advisor Neil Jenkinson at Inglis Easter, and he’s been enjoying the fruits of that purchase for 27 years now.

A daughter of Ringside Lady (Clay Hero) - who won Moonee Valley’s Crockett Stakes (Listed, 1000m) and was a sibling to the dams of three black type winners - She’s Purring would prove her $80,000 purchase price a huge bargain.

Trained by Ron Quinton, she became a city winner at Randwick at her third start, then ventured north to add two-year-old black type at her next outing, winning Eagle Farm’s Sir Douglas Wadley Handicap (Listed, 1200m), now the Bill Carter Stakes.

She’s Purring returned at three to claim Randwick’s PJ Bell Handicap (Listed, 1200m) and retired the following year with two stakes wins and a black type placing to her name.

Still more success followed for Cornell in the breeding barn. She’s Purring’s first foal was Global Warming (Agnes World), who won the 2008 Canterbury Classic (Listed, 1100m).

For She’s Purring’s third foal, Cornell made an early booking with Lonhro in his first season at stud of 2004, and from that mating his mare produced Ro’s Purring (Lonhro). She was restricted to just four starts but won the first three, two in Brisbane and one at the Gold Coast.

Keen for another Lonhro filly, Cornell sent She’s Purring to the Darley stallion in each of the next two years, but no foal ensued.

Instead, she went to General Nediym (Nediym) and for her fourth foal she produced Pure Purrfection, who took Brisbane’s Bribie Handicap (Listed, 1110m) in 2014.

Pure Purrfection has gone on to star in the breeding barn, with Queensland’s Eureka Stud breeding from her the four-time Brisbane Listed winner Outback Barbie (Spirit Of Boom) and her fellow Listed winning sister Barbie’s Sister. Outback Barbie in turn has thrown another Brisbane Listed victor, Hi Barbie (I Am Invincible).

In 2017, as her second-last foal, She’s Purring had Zorocat (Toronado), who became a stakes-placed city winner.

All up, She’s Purring had ten named foals for nine runners, nine winners, and two stakes victors. The one throw who didn’t race has transpired to be the dam of the now dual stakes winner Weeping Woman, in Cries And Whiskers (Street Cry).

Cornell sent She’s Purring to Darley’s shuttler Street Cry in 2012 but the filly foal died after birth. He tried again weeks after that, and the result was Cries And Whiskers. She was retained by her breeder, but she didn’t make it to the track.

“We did put her into training [with Ron Quinton] and she showed some ability, but she had one knee that was not perfect,” Cornell tells It’s In The Blood of Cries And Whiskers, who had two unplaced barrier trials.

“So rather than race her with a knee that wasn’t great, we decided to retire her.”

Whether that decision helped nurture a good broodmare or not, Cries And Whiskers is making a very strong fist of it.

Cornell first put her to Written Tycoon (Iglesia) and bred Magnatear, who sold to the late Sam Kavanagh for $200,000 at Magic Millions Gold Coast. Now trained by Richard and Will Freedman, the six-year-old has won six races - five in city class - for just over $600,000 in prize-money, and has a chance to give Cries And Whispers two Sydney winners on successive weekends at Rosehill this Saturday.

For the mare’s second mating, Cornell reverted to his long held desire to have a daughter of Lonhro to breed from. Fifteen years after he first patronised the stallion, he went back again in 2019. The result - from what was Lonhro’s third-last full crop - was Weeping Woman.

“I wanted to have a Lonhro mare for a long time,” Cornell says. “Most breeders have a good opinion of Lonhro. He was a great racehorse, terrific at stud and a beautiful animal, and he’s thoroughly proven himself as a broodmare sire.

“He was getting near the end, so it was one of the last chances for me to get a Lonhro mare.”

Lonhro has been in the top ten on the Australian broodmare sires’ table for the past eight seasons including this one. He’s currently seventh, one spot below his personal best finish from 2022-23, when his star grandchild was Godolphin’s Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) hero Golden Mile (Astern).

As a broodmare sire, Lonhro now has 63 Australian stakes winners from 1,360 runners at 4.63 per cent, and 117 stakes horses at 8.60 per cent.

Retained and raced by Cornell, his wife Judi and friends, Weeping Woman took her time to mature but in her third preparation, at start number three, Pride took her to Canberra where she won a maiden on the synthetic track by 7.88 lengths, at $1.45.

She defied the “start after your maiden win” hoodoo by backing up to score at Hawkesbury, and in her subsequent campaign, at start number eight, she became a city winner, at Canterbury.

The mare has worked her way up through the grades and this preparation - interspersed with a six-week freshen-up over Christmas - she has blossomed with four successive metro class victories, the last two in stakes grade, to the delight of punters since she was favourite in all four.

She scored wins in Benchmark 78 grade at Rosehill and Kembla Grange before she stepped up to black type for the first time and took Randwick’s Razor Sharp (Listed, 1200m) by 0.54 lengths, then held off Group 1 winner Manaal (Tassort) to take the Triscay by 1.19 lengths, earning a well deserved spell before next spring.

Lonhro (Credit: Darley)

“Being by Lonhro, a lot of his progeny are late developers,” Cornell says. “They mature later, and you can race them on. She’s lightly raced, with only 17 starts, so I hope she can race on as a six-year-old and then we can breed from her.”

While his main goal was to have a broodmare by Lonhro - who died in 2024 - Cornell also tapped into one of the stallion’s most successful nicks in sending his daughter of Street Cry, Cries And Whispers, to him.

Lonhro over Street Cry runs at a 13 per cent stakes winners to runners ratio. That ranks him sixth among the stallion’s nicks - of more than ten foals - but importantly, from the nick’s three black type winners, two have scored at the elite level.

One is Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) queen Lyre, and the other was born six years later in Attica, last year’s Spring Champion Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) hero in his first campaign - and a stablemate of Weeping Woman.

“Joe Pride brought that up to me the other day, that Attica and Weeping Woman were from the same nick,” Cornell says. “The nick goes well.

“When I did the mating, Street Cry was having good success as a sire and starting to get some success as a broodmare sire, but in the last few years he’s really kicked on as a broodmare sire. So I was fortunate I made a choice pretty early in his broodmare sire career.”

In Australia, Street Cry as a broodmare sire has had 49 stakes winners at a 5.99 per cent stakes winners to runners ratio, and 83 stakes horses at 10.16 per cent. He’s currently sixth on the country’s broodmare sire charts, after a personal best among top ten finishes in the past three seasons of third in 2023-24, thanks mainly to Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) hero Romantic Warrior (Acclamation).

Weeping Woman’s pedigree is highlighted by Mr. Prospector, with a 4m x 4m, 5f blend through three different offspring. He’s in handy places, as the grandsire of Lonhro’s dam Shadea (Straight Strike), as Cries And Whiskers’ third sire (Mr. Prospector-Machievellian-Street Cry), and as the damsire of her damsire, Flying Spur (Danehill).

Mr. P was similarly in effect in another stakes winner on Saturday in Paradise City (Deep Field), who took Flemington’s Frances Tressady Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m). She has him at 5m, 5m x 4m, again through three different offspring, with that mare being out of the daughter of another son of Machievellian in British stallion Kahal.

She’s lightly raced, with only 17 starts, so I hope she can race on as a six-year-old and then we can breed from her

Ian Cornell

Further back, Weeping Woman has US stallions Sir Ivor (Sir Gaylord) at 5m x 6f and Never Bend (Nasrullah) at 5f x 6m.

Slightly unusually, there’s only three spots for Northern Dancer (Nearctic) - and just five for his dam Natalma (Native Dancer) - but the great stallion is in influential places, including being doubled-up in She’s Purring’s father Flying Spur.

The breed-shaping Nearco (Pharos) is the dominant stallion by far in the pedigree, with 20 mentions in the first nine generations.

And thus Nearco’s dam Nogara (Havresac) is the most dominant mare, with 14 appearances in those nine columns, ahead of the ten of Mumtaz Begum (Blenheim).

Cornell continues to enjoy success as a hobby breeder with four mares. Another Lonhro mare - three-time winner Chazelles - brought him a strong result at Inglis Easter last year when her colt by Too Darn Hot (Dubawi) sold from Widden Stud’s draft to trainer Dom Sutton and associates for $700,000.

He’s repeated the trick with that mare, who’s now in-foal to Too Darn Hot’s star son Broadsiding after his first season at stud, at Darley.

Cries And Whiskers has gone on to throw Miss Capitale (Capitalist), a $55,000 Inglis Classic buy who’s won two of three for Matthew Smith, and another filly in Hot Whiskers (Too Darn Hot), who’s won one of five for Cornell and Phillip Stokes.

Cornell will now offer Cries And Whiskers’ latest filly, by Pinatubo (Shamardal), at next month’s Inglis Premier Yearling Sale. The filly also brings Mr. Prospector in triplicate, with a 4f x 3m of Machiavellian.

Cries And Whiskers is now in-foal to new Arrowfield Stud shuttler Vandeek (Havana Grey).
