Tasmanian Yearling Sale (Credit: Magic Millions)

Close relatives to Island State racing legends Mystic Journey (Needs Further), Still A Star (Toronado), Geegees Blackflash (Clangalang) and Durazzo (Needs Further) are among the choice lots inspiring confidence of a resurgent Magic Millions Tasmanian Yearling Sale on Monday.

With the auction firm’s managing director Barry Bowditch enthusiastic over a “much deeper” catalogue than in 2025, the consensus is that more high quality lots have been kept at home for sale by Tasmanian breeders this year, rather than be offered on the mainland.

What's On

This is expected to spark an increase in interstate interest, while it’s also tipped that the sale will reflect a rise in industry confidence among locals.

Tasmania’s largest breeder, Armidale Stud, will offer not one but two three-quarter sisters to the outstanding Mystic Journey, who was bought at the sale for $11,000 before winning $4.1 million in prize-money including the inaugural All-Star Mile (1600m), en route to a multi-million dollar sale as a broodmare to Japan.

Boutique breeders Alva Stud will offer only three lots, but one is a half-brother by Rubick (Encosta De Lago) to Still A Star, in Lot 11. Bought at the Launceston auction for $13,000, that mare won seven stakes races, including two in Melbourne, and almost $900,000 in prize-money, before fetching $700,000 as a broodmare.

Geegees Blackflash became the first horse to earn seven figures ($1.19 million) in prize-money racing purely in Tasmania, where he won 22 races until 2016, including six at stakes level. Armidale will offer his half-brother by Needs Further as Lot 108.

And Durazzo has become a modern day hero for some strong Tasmanian connections, being raced by Star Thoroughbreds’ ex-Launcestonian boss Denise Martin after she purchased him at the sale in 2022 for $97,500. The five-year-old has won 11 of 16, claiming three of his four stakes victories on the bounce late last year, and has earned over $600,000 in prize-money.

Armidale will offer Durazzo’s half-sister by Newgate Farm sire Brutal (O’Reilly) as Lot 70.

Tasmania’s sale hit the doldrums last year, amid some concerns in the market following a sketchy start to Australasia’s sale season. While the clearance rate ultimately came in at 75 per cent compared to 72.87 per cent in 2024, the average dropped from almost $30,000 to $23,500 as the median fell from $24,000 to $19,000.

The gross plummeted from $2.82 million to $1.97 million - dropping by a third while the number of lots sold (84) fell by only 10.6 per cent. The top lot fetched $80,000, down from $145,000 the year before.

However, a degree of guarded optimism appears to have returned among Tasmanian vendors that this year’s sale will bring a recovery. That’s based partly on satisfactory to strong results through the first four auctions of the Australasian season - Magic Millions Gold Coast and Perth, Karaka and Inglis Classic - but also because of the feel of the sale ground over the past couple of days of inspections.

“There’s more people from the mainland here this year than last year,” said Armidale’s managing director David Whishaw.

“Magic Millions has worked hard to get diversity into the buying bench, and hopefully we see that reflected in the sale ring come Monday.

“Last year was a tough sale, but I understand we’re operating in a tough part of the market, and there’s certainly some challenges the industry faces in Tassie.

“But I would hope there’s more interest in the top lots than there was last year, and hopefully the middle and the bottom of the market can hold up.”

A total of 125 lots have been catalogued - one fewer than last year - for the one-day sale, which kicks off at 11am.

Whishaw said he was “certain the good horses will find their mark”, while acknowledging a range of problems exist for the industry in Tasmania, including the battered reputation of its racing integrity body, and fears surrounding the fact a 20-year government funding deal will expire in 2029.

“Certainly locally, there’s been a distinct lack of confidence for several reasons,” he said.

“We had an integrity department that was in complete disarray, and a lot of participants were losing confidence in the industry.

“Also, we had a 20-year [government] funding deed that’s about the run out in 2029. So people are buying horses for an industry that’s got no guaranteed funding after 2029.”

However, Whishaw said the state’s racing and breeding industry had “seen a bit of a turnaround in the past 12 months”.

The Tasbred bonus scheme was significantly increased from November 1, with all Tasmanian maidens now carrying a $20,000 kicker - $16,000 to owners and $4,000 to breeders.

That bonus also offers $1,000 to the winning trainer, which they can swap for a $4,000 voucher to use at the Tasmanian sale.

Tasbred also matches to 70 per cent the advertised VOBIS payment on a Victorian win for Tasmanian-sired horses.

And, Whishaw said, the state government had “given us a verbal agreement that our industry will be no worse off and that they’re looking at rolling out the funding deed as it was”.

However, Whishaw said industry figures were wary on this note, given the government last August announced it would phase out greyhound racing in Tasmania by June 2029, in contrast to pre-election statements.

“Having decided to close down greyhound racing after a pre-election promise to keep that going, that certainly hasn’t helped industry confidence,” he said.

Still, with expected greater mainland involvement particularly, and based on the Tasmanian sale’s record for well-performed graduates, hopes remain high for an upswing on Monday compared to the bleak 2025 sale, though the usual fears for the bottom end of the market remain.

“I think the sale continues to do a great job producing graduates,” Whishaw said. “Our farm alone has produced eight stakes winners in the past 12 months.”

Whishaw’s optimism was outstripped by the Bowditch’s confidence the sale would bounce back this year, driven by the all-important mainland interest and the higher number of topline lots being kept in Tasmania for sale this year rather than being sent north of Bass Strait.

“We’re coming off a disappointing sale in 2025, but I’m certain we’ve got a better line-up of horses this year,” said Bowditch, tipping an average “upwards of $30,000”.

“The pedigrees on offer and the quality of horse on offer this year at the top end exceeds what we had last year, and that should attract good mainland interest.

“So I’m hopeful we can get some interstate interest and get some appetite going from the mainland, given the strength of that end of town.

“It’s always a sale where there’s plenty of value to be found, but we do have the quality at this sale this year that you may not generally see being kept here by the vendors.

“We worked hard with the vendors to ensure they had those types of horses here for this edition.”

He added: “It’s a deeper catalogue this year, and I’d hope the average will be upward of $30,000.

“That means there’s going to be plenty of horses under that, where there’s value to be found.

“But also, last year we didn’t have a six-figure horse. This year I’m hoping there’ll be several.”

Armidale’s 27-lot draft is headed by their two three-quarter sisters to Mystic Journey by her dam Needs Further - who stands at the farm for $5,500 - and out of daughters of the super mare’s mother, White Gold (Colombia).

Lot 26 is a beautifully rich coloured brown filly out of the unraced Oh So Gold (Savoire Vivre), who’s had four winners from as many runners including this filly’s sister Mystical Pursuit, who took two Tasmanian Listed events and placed in two others.

“This filly is a standout - a ripping, big and strong type,” Whishaw said. “The mare is four from four, and this is the best type she’s thrown, so I expect she’ll find strong interest.”

And Lot 112 - from Mystic Journey’s co-breeders Ralph and Peter Zito - is another muscular filly out of Gold Phoenix (Jayemzed), a Launceston winner over 1220 metres. Her brother Orovero has won twice at the Victorian provincials for Mick Kent, and ran a 0.02 length second in a Caulfield Heath Benchmark 74 last Wednesday.

“She’s very typical of the family, and is a nice and athletic type,” Whishaw said.

Tasmania’s other major farm, Grenville Stud, has a 21-lot draft whose highlights include Lot 85, a filly who’s the only yearling at the sale by Coolmore’s hot first season sire Home Affairs (I Am Invincible). The chestnut is out of a half-sister to New Zealand Group 1 winner Signify (Perfectly Ready).

North-east Tasmania’s Motree Thoroughbreds offers 25 yearlings by a vast range of stallions including Lot 125, a filly by Darley’s debutant sire Paulele (Dawn Approach) whose three-time winning dam is a sister to dual stakes winner Deroche (Needs Further).

London’s Image lands third stakes race

London’s Image (4 m Headwater - New Image by More Than Ready) registered a third career stakes success when narrowly scoring in Sunday’s Pinjarra Classic (Listed, 1300m) at Pinjarra Scarpside. Ridden by Lucy Fiore for Grant and Alana Williams, the four-year-old mare defeated Talkanco (I’m All The Talk) by 0.2 lengths with a further 0.3 lengths back to Fast Flicker (A Lot) in third place. Sunday’s Listed victory adds to wins in the WA Breeders’ Classic (Listed, 1200m) and the Burgess Queen Stakes (Listed, 1400m).

Observer bidding for Guineas redemption

Observer (Credit: Racing Photos)

The Ciaron Maher-trained Observer (Ghaiyyath) will be out for some Guineas redemption on Saturday when he tackles the Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) at Flemington. The three-year-old son of Ghaiyyath (Dubawi) has won his last three starts, taking out the Moonee Valley Vase (Gr 2, 2040m) before landing the Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) and returning with success in the Autumn Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) on February 7. Those trio of wins followed on from a 2.5 lengths third in the Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) behind Autumn Boy (The Autumn Sun), and Maher feels the colt has more to give over the 1600-metre trip. "I think he showed there that he's good enough to win at that level over that trip," Maher said. "I hope he can do it for him and his future. You would think he'll only get better at Flemington, just with the style he races and the set-up of the track. He was good first-up, but he'd be much better at the mile and beyond." Maher completed the Victoria Derby-Australian Guineas double with Hitotsu (Maurice) in 2021, who did not take in a start before that Guineas success. "With Hitotsu, we were very confident to go in fresh at the mile, but with this horse, I wanted to give him a run," Maher said. "He's a different style of horse, he's a bit more relaxed this time around. He went from the Norton [bit] back to the normal bridle last start, so he is maturing as he goes and is getting stronger."

Caballus to have Newmarket shot

Bjorn Baker is aiming to give Caballus (I Am Invincible) a run in the Newmarket Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) next month after the five-year-old gelding's runner-up effort in the Expressway Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) first-up. A four-time stakes winner at up to Group 3 level, the son of I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) could also head for the All-Star Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) alongside stablemate and last weekend's Futurity Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) winner Pericles (Street Boss). “He was very good on the first day of the carnival down the straight,” Baker said of Caballus. “Whether he’s quite up to Group 1 level, time will tell, but he’s going as well as he can. I’m looking forward to the Newmarket. I’m hoping to get some weight relief with him. His run in the Expressway was super."

Goindasamy heads to South Australia

South Australia is the new home of Group 1-winning rider Ashvin Goindasamy, who has made the shift south from Queensland after a six-month stint. Originally from Mauritius, Goindasamy started his apprenticeship and won eight stakes races in New Zealand, including at Group 1 level, and he will now try his luck in the south. “I’ve come over for a couple of weeks to try and make some new contacts, and it’s been great so far,” Goindasamy told Racing.com. “I was riding in New Zealand for probably eight years; I started my apprenticeship and had my first race ride when I was 20… I’ve always had in the back of my mind to come to Australia and ride. I was at the Gold Coast from August last year, and it was good, I met some nice people over there and worked with some great people. But it was very hard, when the carnival was coming up, to really get the ground going.” The 27-year-old will have a short freshen-up in Bali after his first Morphettville ride on Saturday, but is keen to make his presence felt upon returning. “When I come back, I’ll be hungry for more winners,” he said.

Tony Rider secures War Princess for NZB The Kiwi

War Princess (Credit: Race Images)

Tony Rider whet his appetite for victory in the $4 million NZB The Kiwi (Listed, 1500m) after breeding the inaugural winner of the race in Damask Rose (Savabeel) last year, spurring him to lease a slot in this year’s edition of the southern hemisphere’s richest three-year-old race.

The Milan Park principal has leased a slot in the Champions Day feature off RACE, and fittingly, he has chosen War Princess (U S Navy Flag), a filly trained from the club’s Awapuni track, as his representative.

“We have got War Princess,” Rider said. “We rate this filly in the top five three-year-olds. Obviously, it will be hard to beat Well Written, but any of us who race horses know that anything can go wrong on the day.

“It worked out quite well. I know Pete Didham [co-trainer] reasonably well and I know one of the owners, Ian Middleton, really well, he is a friend of ours.”

The daughter of U S Navy Flag (War Front) was fourth in last month’s Karaka Millions 3YO (RL, 1600m) at Ellerslie and trainers Peter and Trent Didham are excited to prepare her for New Zealand’s richest race at Ellerslie on March 7.

“We are rapt to have someone like Tony on board, it’s fantastic,” Peter Didham said. “She deserves it [NZB Kiwi slot], she has won five and is a Group 3 winner. It was a huge run in the Karaka Millions, she only got beaten a nose from third by a Group 1 winner in La Dorada.

“We are happy to have secured a spot. We were always targeting that night anyway because if we didn’t get a slot, we were going to the three-year-old 1400 metres, but it was nice to get it done nice and early.”

War Princess has had a quiet time since her Karaka Millions run, and Didham said she is building nicely towards The Kiwi.

“She went to Mark Treweek’s and had a week on the grass,” he said. “A little foot abscess burst out that night after the race. She had a week on the water treadmill and then came back here.

“She went to the beach on Friday and she is galloping between races at Wanganui. She is on track and looks fantastic.”

Alabama Lass on track to defend King’s Plate crown

Ken and Bev Kelso have been scratching their heads with their Group 1-performed mare Alabama Lass (Alabama Express) over the last few months, but they received a confidence boost following her win in a Group and Listed 1100-metre trial at Taupo on Sunday. After finishing runner-up when first-up in the Moir Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) at The Valley in spring, Alabama Lass disappointed when tailing the field home in the Manikato Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) three weeks later and following a series of post-race examinations, nothing untoward was found. The daughter of Alabama Express (Redoute’s Choice) returned to New Zealand and resumed in the Railway (Gr 1, 1200m) at Ellerslie last month, but again disappointed when finishing seventh, and once again an extensive post-race examination came back clear. The Kelsos elected to press on with her preparation, taking her to Taupo on Sunday for a trial and she pleased with an all the way win in a smart field that included Te Akau Racing’s NZB The Kiwi (1500m)-bound pair of He Who Dares (Snitzel) and La Dorada (Super Seth). “We don’t know what went wrong in the Manikato, she disappointed, and was disappointing again in the Railway,” Ken Kelso said. “After the Manikato we did all the tests, dynamic scopes, an ECG, x-rays, and we couldn’t find anything wrong with her. It’s a mystery really. Today was a day to see where we are at and she looked more like her old self. If we can’t find anything wrong and her work is good leading up to next week then we will press onto the King’s Plate.”

I’m All In scoops the pot at Ellerslie

I’m All In (Zoustar) showed he was back to his best with a gritty performance to take out the final race on an action-packed day at Ellerslie on Saturday, an open handicap over 1200 metres. Sporting the colours of Cambridge Stud principals Sir Brendan and Lady Jo Lindsay, the lightly raced four-year-old was having just his 17th start and the second in his current campaign after finishing an eye-catching third first up behind Archaic Smile (Saxon Warrior) at Trentham last month. Stephen Marsh produced the favourite for the race in Ardalio (Ardrossan) at $3.90, however, I’m All In was well-supported closer to start time, closing a $6.50 second favourite in the hands of Warren Kennedy. Kennedy had guided Jaarffi (Iffraaj) to success in the WFA Classic (Gr 1, 1600m) earlier in the day and made it a double for Cambridge Stud with a well-judged ride that saw I’m All In fight back in the final stages to defeat December (Shamexpress) by 0.3 lengths after the runner-up had joined him for a titanic tussle at the 300 metres. Marsh was sporting a wide smile as he praised his charge for the way he fought back to gain the victory. “It feels good to win a race with those colours and I thought he was very good as he looked like he was going to run second, but he dug deep,” the winning trainer said. “We’d like to come back here in a fortnight and run in the open sprint and I think he deserves to as he was really good today in a good field. I thought his last start was really good and he is racing a lot better as he is getting his barrier manners right and putting himself right there by jumping out well.”

Wood enjoys notching up 500th NZ training win

Ellerslie’s Saturday meeting proved to be a momentous occasion for Chris Wood, with That’s Gold’s (Lucky Vega) dominant win in the Avondale Guineas (Gr 2, 2100m) bringing up his 500th training victory in New Zealand. “It was a big thrill. That is 500 wins in New Zealand and to bring it up with a Group 2 race was very good,” Wood said. “It was really exciting and the horse did the whole team proud.” While he has notched up 500 wins in his homeland, Wood also experienced plenty of success across the Tasman. “I have had quite a few [wins] in Australia,” he said. “I trained a winner on Melbourne Cup Day three times, Cox Plate Day three times and Caulfield Cup Day twice, so I have had a good run over there as well. I had a stable at Mornington for a couple of years but decided to close that and concentrate on New Zealand.” Wood has enjoyed more than four decades in the industry, which all began thanks to his sister’s pony. “My sister had a pony and Royce Dowling used to come and shoe it,” Wood said. “Royce Downing was a good trainer and he looked at me one day and said, ‘you are pretty small, have you ridden a horse?’, I said I had ridden my sister’s pony a few times, so he said I better come and have a ride on a racehorse, and it went from there.”

JPN: Back-to-back February Stakes for Costa Nova

Costa Nova (6 h Lord Kanaloa - Colorful Blossom by Heart’s Cry) added a second career Grade 1 to his CV on Sunday when landing the February Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at Tokyo for the second year in succession. Ridden by Christophe Lemaire for Tetsuya Kimura, the six-year-old entire defeated Wilson Tesoro (Kitasan Black) by a half-length with the same distance further back to W Heart Bond (Kizuna) in third place. "I'm happy to have won this Grade 1 again,” the winning rider said. “Rachel [King, jockey] did a great job in this race last year as I was overseas. Costa Nova was in top condition and performed really well again. I was careful about the start, he broke well and was able to get into a good position behind Wilson [Tesoro]. He felt great after I moved him to the outside and he responded really well with the blinkers. I don't know what his next race will be, but as a Grade 1 horse I think he can go anywhere."

Ka Ying Rising surges into Hong Kong racing history with 18th straight win

By Leo Schlink

Ka Ying Rising (Credit: HKJC)

David Hayes believes Ka Ying Rising’s (Shamexpress) extraordinary dominance can continue indefinitely after the world’s premier sprinter demolished quality opposition to post a Hong Kong record 18th successive victory in course record time in the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Cup (Gr 1, 1400m) at Sha Tin on Sunday.

Stretching his unbeaten sequence beyond Silent Witness’ (El Moxie) longstanding mark of 17 wins, slotted between 2002 and 2005, Ka Ying Rising imperiously steamrolled his opposition in 1m 19.36s to smash the previous course record of 1m 19.92s, jointly held by Encouraging (Redoute’s Choice) and Packing Hermod (Rubick).

Zac Purton confirmed Hayes had told him pre-race “to break the track record” after he had ridden Ka Ying Rising hands-and-heels to the finish, three-and-half-lengths clear of Helios Express (Toronado) with Lucky Sweynesse (Sweynesse) one-and-a-quarter lengths further astern.

Improving his overall record to 19 wins from 21 starts – after two narrow seconds as a three-year-old – Ka Ying Rising jumped quickly from barrier three to sit second behind Copartner Prance (Epaulette) and clocked 21.93s from the 1200 metres to the 800 metres before putting his rivals to the sword over the final 800 metres in a blistering 43.96s, with respective 200 metre splits of 11.26s, 11.07s, 10.52s and 11.11s to create history.

Unbeaten since February 2024, Ka Ying Rising’s unbeaten streak includes eight Group 1s – two Hong Kong Sprint (Gr 1, 1200m) victories, two Centenary Sprint Cup titles (Gr 1, 1200m), The Everest (Gr 1, 1200m), the Chairman’s Sprint Prize (Gr 1, 1200m) and now a pair of Queen’s Silver Jubilee Cup trophies.

Silent Witness reigned from December 2002 to April 2005, snaring seven top-level features – the Hong Kong Sprint, two Centenary Sprint Cups, two Chairman’s Sprint Prize triumphs and the 2005 Queen’s Silver Jubilee Cup.

The stunning nature of Ka Ying Rising’s latest victory prompted Hayes to declare that the five-year-old could sustain his current level of excellence for the next 18 months, fitness permitting.

“If we can place him conservatively, we hope to have him for another couple of seasons, that’s really exciting,” Hayes said. “He loves a month between runs, so we’ll probably go for the Sprint Cup next [on 6 April] and then we don't have to train him too hard and babysit him into the Chairman’s Sprint Prize [on 26 April].

“Hopefully we can get another clean sweep of the season again with The Everest in the middle.

“He's more composed than ever, he's changing legs and you can't ask for much more than he's doing. He's breaking track records and his last three runs, he'd have broken the track record if Zac had let him go.

“He jumped so well and cruised through the bend beautifully – at the 300 metres, I could really enjoy it. I could tell he had the race in command. Zac went for him a bit more than he normally does and rode to instructions, which was good.

“I've trained a lot of horses that have gone 742 days without winning, so to continuously win for 742 days is mind-numbing. It's two and a half years and the thing people don't realise is that he was the [equal] youngest horse in the race today. They always think he's the big boy bashing them up, but he's actually the baby.

“It's a huge relief. I didn't think the team could have had him better for today and I was confident that if the track was riding fast, he could break the [track] record. I didn't want Zac sitting up in the last 100 metres, I said to him 'let him run through the post and we'll see how strong he is at 1400 metres'. He's just a star.

“I just thought for his worldwide ratings, I wanted Zac to let him go today and hopefully he can keep climbing up that incredible ladder that he's going up. When you've got a horse as good as him, he's the one everyone will be comparing the next big horse too.”

Purton notched his fifth victory in the race following wins on Ambitious Dragon (Pins) in 2013 and Beauty Generation (Road To Rock) (2018, 2019 & 2020) and believes Ka Ying Rising has reached his peak.

“I think he’s reached his level and it’s just a matter of managing him now and trying to preserve that for as long as we can,” the winning rider said. “He’s the horse of a lifetime. I just shake my head every time with the performances he puts up and the ease with which he does.

“I’ve just got to pinch myself, I’m so lucky.  He’s just different – he’s in a league of his own. They’re very good horses that he’s racing against, and he just does it like he’s having a barrier trial and let’s hope he can stay in this form for another 12 or 18 months.

“It was pretty straightforward. He jumped well, he was in a lovely rhythm behind Copartner Prance. Patch Of Theta went to move around me about the 1200 metres and I just made sure I was going to give my horse plenty of room. And then he just did his job – he did what he does.

“To be etched in history now forever is part of my legacy, part of David’s and a part of Ka Ying Rising and hopefully he can continue on doing what he’s doing. We’re all enjoying being associated with him and I think everyone is enjoying watching him being successful as well.

“The horse deserves all the credit. He’s the one with the ability and he continues to step out, race after race, and blow good quality horses away and it’s very unique to see that.”

Currently the second-highest rated horse in the world, Ka Ying Rising also holds the 1200 metre turf course record (1m 07.20s).

Purton also triumphed aboard the Manfred Man-trained debutant Almighty Lightning (Dirty Work) in the Class 4 Daffodil Handicap (1000m), Cool Blue (Foxwedge) for Chris So in the Class 5 Jasmine Handicap (1800m), Pierre Ng’s Aerovolanic (Foxwedge) in the Class 4 Peach Blossom Handicap (1400m) and Cool Boy (Per Incanto) in the Class 3 Peony Handicap (1200m) for Jamie Richards.

Stellar Express (Zoustar) slotted his fifth course and distance success in the Class 2 Orchid Handicap (1000m), clocking 55.36s for John Size and Andrea Atzeni. Formerly known as Dariym, the gelding won three races in France when trained by Francis Graffard.

Frankie Lor notched a treble, prevailing with the talented Smart Golf (Needs Further) in the Class 4 Heung Yee Kuk Centenary Cup Handicap (1200m) under Harry Bentley, Embrace Aberdeen (All Too Hard) in the Class 4 Gladiolus Handicap (1200m) under Matthew Poon before the impressive Salon S (Zousain) clinched the Class 3 Rose Handicap (1400m) to give Poon a treble.

Poon also triumphed on David Hall’s Power Of Vitam (Proisir) in the Class 3 Primula Handicap (1600m) after All’s Well (Frosted) bolted in with the Class 4 Peach Blossom Handicap (1400m) under Dylan Browne McMonagle for Dennis Yip.
