Relief washed over Longwood Thoroughbred Farm on Monday when its draft of 21 yearlings arrived at Oaklands Junction for the 2026 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale – the first time the youngsters had been reunited since being evacuated from the property during Victoria’s devastating bushfires in early January.

The crisis claimed one life and burnt more than 400,000 hectares, destroying or significantly damaging at least 300 homes across the state amid record heat and extreme fire conditions. A state of disaster was declared as authorities coordinated emergency responses and evacuations, with the breeding industry among those impacted.

What's On

For Longwood principal Michael Christian, the road to Premier has been anything but straightforward.

“It’s been a challenging period for us. Our yearlings had started their preparation for Melbourne Premier at the end of December, and the fire came through on the 8th and 9th of January,” Christian told ANZ News.

“We had to evacuate our horses, and as an impact of the fire we lost our perimeter fencing, paddock fencing, key barn and other structures in an area where we would ordinarily prepare our yearlings. This made it impossible to proceed with our yearling preparation.

“We explored a number of different options, including leasing a facility to try and relocate our yearling staff there. But for various reasons, it just didn't quite work out.

“After receiving some incredible offers of help we decided to outsource the preparation of our yearlings to five different farms: Rosemont Stud, Two Bays Farm, Shadow Hill, Collingrove and Widden Stud. There’s not a lot of money in prepping yearlings so I'll be forever grateful and thankful to those farms and their people for the generosity they displayed during this time.

“The horses all arrived across the day on Monday and it was great to have them all in one location again, after being scattered all over the state. We could get about the business of parading and showing them to potential buyers.”

Back at Longwood, rebuilding efforts are underway.

It's been a challenging period for us, and we've finally got all our horses back together for the Premier Sale, and we’re looking forward to selling them come the weekend

Michael Christian

“It’s a slow gradual process. We've put up the perimeter fence, which is great. That was really important. In terms of other internal fencing, we’ve started replacing it and expect it to be completed shortly. We also lost one of our really good barns, so we're just working through how to rebuild that, whether we change the structure up a little bit. Hopefully that will be rebuilt in the coming weeks.

“Even things that I never really imagined, like areas of our water pipes melting from the extreme heat of the ground. Obviously that’s something we repaired very quickly. So it’s all slowly coming together.

“I must say, we were a lot luckier than many other properties in the area. Other farms were decimated, losing houses, structures and fencing, including our great friend [Magic Millions bloodstock manager] Tim Brown across the road who lost everything.

“The fire burnt right up to our house, and it was only great work from our CFA that saved it. They’re an incredible organisation, the people in that organisation were just amazing right through this ordeal. Our staff were amazing as well with the way they evacuated horses.

“I couldn't be more grateful and thankful to them for doing what they did. It's been a challenging period for us, and we've finally got all our horses back together for the Premier Sale, and we’re looking forward to selling them come the weekend.”

Lot 72: Capitalist ex Fuhryk colt (Credit: Inglis)

Across the three days of selling, Longwood will present 21 yearlings, headlined by Lot 11, a chestnut colt by reigning Champion Victorian Sire Toronado (High Chaparral) out of Di Lusso (Lonhro). The mare has already produced Group 2 winner Contessa Vanessa (Bullbars), runner-up in the New Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m), as well as Group 2 placegetter Pivot City (Not A Single Doubt) and recent Manfred Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) runner-up Job Done (Snitzel).

“The mare has done an incredible job,” Christian said. “She’s produced a Group 2 winner, and now two stakes placegetters with an upgrade in the pedigree with the Mick Price-trained Job Done running second in the Group 3 Manfred Stakes.

“The colt is beautifully balanced and has plenty of strength. He gets across the ground effortlessly and we’re really excited to take him through the ring on Sunday. He is owned by our great friends, Rob and June Harding, who have bred some outstanding horses. It's a pleasure to have this colt in our draft.”

Lot 72 is a colt by Capitalist (Written Tycoon) out of Group 3 winner Fuhryk (Star Witness), who also finished second in the Winterbottom Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m).

“I reckon if you wanted to produce something similar to Capitalist himself, this would be it,” Christian said. “He's a November 5 foal, but he's beautifully developed with great scope and balance. He's a beautiful moving horse with a terrific temperament, and I'm really looking forward to putting him through as well.”

Lot 337 is by in-form sire Ghaiyyath (Dubawi) out of Shy Talk (Shamus Award), an unraced half-sister to champion stayer and triple Group 1 winner Jameka (Myboycharlie) and Group 2 winner Grandslam (Myboycharlie). Ghaiyyath could add further top-level success this weekend with three runners engaged in the Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) at Flemington.

“It’s a great family and the stallion is doing an incredible job,” Christian said of Ghaiyyath.

“They just all run. This guy is big and strong with a wonderful depth of girth. But he's also just a lovely moving horse, and I think that's the trick when you've got these big, strong colts – if they can move the way he does, then I think you’ve got a potential star on your hands. We've had quite a few Ghaiyyaths grow up on the farm and he's very typical of the breed.”

Lot 498, by another in-form sire in Street Boss (Street Cry), is a colt out of a winning More Than Ready (Southern Halo) half-sister to stakes winner Our Crown Mistress (Star Witness) who has been popular during inspections.

“He’s an absolute beauty: very athletic, light on his feet, and I'm very excited to not only put him through the ring, but also to see where he ends up because Street Boss is taking all before him at the moment,” Christian said. “I'm really excited about this colt."

Rounding out the highlights is Lot 581, a colt by Anders (Not A Single Doubt) out of Daisy Head Mayzie (Sebring), a half-sister to Group 3-winning juvenile Brereton (Zoustar) and recent Manfred Stakes winner Space Rider (Zoustar) out of Christian’s star mare Fuddle De Duddle (Red Ransom), from the family of champion mare Bella Nipotina (Pride Of Dubai).

“He just got a recent pedigree upgrade with Space Rider winning the Manfred Stakes,” Christian said. “The first foal from the mare was actually purchased by Colin Little, and she's called Bettylou Who. She trialled up at Cranbourne before Christmas, and won her trial comfortably for Grahame Begg. Graham gave her a little break and she's back in work now, but she looks really exciting.

“This colt is just picture perfect. He's got great balance, a well-proportioned, good moving colt. There's some pretty good blood in that family, so hopefully that carries through to him.”

With inspections in full swing, Christian said buyer interest has been encouraging.

“Thursday we were off our feet. I can't remember doing as many parades, and today, again, it's been really steady. We've just had a constant flow of people and multiple parades, so hopefully it all goes well for the sale and looking forward to presenting our draft of 21.”

Morning Briefing

Australia

First for Tiger Of Malay

Tiger Of Malay (Credit: Newgate)

Newgate Farm’s first-season sire Tiger Of Malay (Extreme Choice) registered his first winner on Friday night when Forest King (2 c ex Tibrogargan Miss by Monashee Mountain) scored on debut at Canterbury. Trained by John O’Shea and Tom Charlton, the colt stepped out in the 1100-metre maiden with Dylan Gibbons aboard. Despite being easy in the market, the colt had four trials under his belt, including two in his current preparation, and was well schooled for the assignment. Settling into a favourable position in running, Forest King capitalised on a smooth passage while several rivals struck trouble. He finished strongly to defeat race favourite Euripides (Street Boss) by 1.2 lengths. “Good result and I’m pleased for his connections, he’s a real bombproof style of horse,” co-trainer Tom Charlton said. “There are no sexy plans for him as his trials weren’t that flash, but he’s done nothing wrong. He put himself in a good position and is a tough, honest horse and he’s a horse we never really find the bottom of at home.” Forest King was a $140,000 Inglis Classic purchase from Glenlogan Park for his trainers, James Bester Bloodstock and E Lucas. He’s the third winner from four foals to race out of the Group 2-placed mare Tibrogargan Miss (Monashee Mountain). Glenlogan Park will offer the current yearling out of Tibrogargan Miss, a filly by North Pacific (Brazen Beau), at the Magic Millions Gold Coast March Yearling Sale as Lot 465.

44 for Deep Field

Deep Field (Northern Meteor) sired his 44th individual stakes winner on Friday when Miss Icelandic (6 m ex Iceland Turf Belle by Duporth) landed an upset win in the Abell Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Cranbourne. Ridden by Patrick Moloney for trainer Matt Laurie, the six-year-old mare was sent off a $19 chance and, after setting the tempo, held off her rivals to secure a length victory. Corniche (Fastnet Rock) finished well to take second, with Celsius Star (Zoustar) 0.4 lengths further back in third. Bred by Mr IK Smith, Miss Icelandic sold to Suman Hedge Bloodstock and Grant Bloodstock for $100,000 at the 2020 Inglis Australian Weanling Sale. She is the first foal and the second winner from two to race out of Iceland Turf Belle (Duporth). Deep Field was retired from stud duties in 2022.

Waller’s leading lights on target despite rain

Autumn Glow (Credit: Sportpix)

Sydney’s unsettled weather remains a talking point, but Chris Waller is pressing ahead with a strong hand for Saturday’s Group 1 meeting at Randwick. The trainer prepares seven of the nine runners in the Verry Elleegant Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m), headed by short-priced favourite Autumn Glow (The Autumn Sun). She is joined by Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) winner Aeliana (Castelvecchio), Group 1 winner Lindermann (Lonhro) and a number of resuming stayers. The race has been a key launching pad for Waller in recent seasons, with past winners including Winx (Street Cry), Via Sistina (Fastnet Rock) and Verry Elleegant (Zed) herself. “It’s a fork in the road,” Waller said. “Some stick around the 1500-metre and mile path, some will go up in distance, and some might go to easier races. Those previous winners, their class told. Autumn Glow fits those three horses.” Waller will also have representation in the Skyline Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) with unbeaten colt Fireball (Snitzel) and debutant Central Europe (Frankel). Central Europe has attracted Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) market interest following impressive trial performances. “The horse hasn’t been pushed yet,” Waller said. “He’s having his first start in a Group race so it’s straight to the NRL first time. They have to be very good.” Inglis Millennium (RL, 1100m) winner Fireball has drawn barrier 12 but is expected to take his place as he builds towards the Golden Slipper in three weeks. Randwick was rated a Soft 7 on Friday morning, with improving conditions forecast ahead of raceday.

Sixties set for Guineas task

The Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) remains one of the few majors missing from Chris Waller’s training record, but the champion trainer is hoping Sixties (Flying Artie) can change that on Saturday. The son of Flying Artie (Artie Schiller) lines up in the mile feature off the back of a carefully planned preparation which included a lead-up run in Melbourne to gain experience racing left-handed. The colt followed a similar path to Riff Rocket (American Pharoah) by winning the C S Hayes Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) at Flemington earlier this month. Riff Rocket went on to finish third in the Guineas before claiming the Rosehill Guineas (Gr 1, 2000m) and ATC Derby (Gr 1, 2400m). “He’s very fit and ready for his Grand Final,” Waller said. “He’s had the two runs back from a spell and both have been pretty impressive to my eyes. After [finishing fifth] the Golden Rose it was either the Australian Guineas or Randwick Guineas and we’ve got Autumn Boy in Sydney, so we decided to split them up.” Damien Lane partnered the colt to his Group 3 win and retains the ride on Saturday before beginning a suspension. Waller said Sixties’ versatility and temperament were key assets as he bids to overcome barrier ten against a strong field including Victorian Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) winner Observer (Ghaiyyath) who resumed with an impressive win in the Autumn Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Caulfield. Waller also saddles C S Hayes fifth Officiate (Justify), with Ben Melham to ride. “He needs to improve a little bit. He’s a rough chance,” Waller said.

Bowman to fly in for Flemington Super Saturday

Super Saturday at Flemington on March 7 has received an international boost with Hugh Bowman set to fly in from Hong Kong for a key book of rides. Bowman will link with Bjorn Baker in both Group 1 features on the card. He partners Stefi Magnetica (All Too Hard) in the All-Star Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) as he chases a second win in the race, and will also ride Caballus (I Am Invincible) in the Newmarket Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) down the straight. “I was really quite impressed with Caballus, his recent form,” Bowman told Racing.com. “He looks the right type for the Flemington straight. Bjorn’s taken his business to a new level over the last couple of years since I’ve been absent and it will be really good to reunite with him.” Stefi Magnetica, a Doncaster Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) winner, is rated a $7.50 chance for the All-Star Mile, while Caballus sits at $9 in early markets for the Newmarket Handicap.

Freedman on weather watch for Apocalyptic

Apocalyptic (Credit: Sportpix)

Michael Freedman will press on with Apocalyptic (Extreme Choice) in Saturday’s Surround Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Randwick but admits deteriorating track conditions will dampen his confidence. “Anything in the soft range would be OK, but if we got into that heavy range it may change things a wee bit,” Freedman said. “You probably can’t not run because she’s never been on heavy. But I get the feeling she wouldn’t want it too wet.” Apocalyptic, winner of all three legs of last spring’s Princess Series before running second in the Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m), resumed with a second placing as odds-on favourite behind Savvy Hallie (Hellbent) in the Light Fingers Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m), a race dominated on speed. Freedman described the performance as “good enough” and said the filly had trained on well since. Savvy Hallie and $1.60 favourite Tempted (Street Boss) again stand in her way, with neither rival proven beyond 1200 metres. Freedman also saddles Group 1 winner Manaal (Tassort) in the Guy Walter Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m), and has no concerns about rain-affected ground. “She’s always thereabouts,” he said. “If we do get a bit of rain and the track is genuinely soft, it might offset the draw [barrier nine].” Meanwhile, the trainer is weighing up whether to run Outspan (Bivouac) in the Skyline Stakes from a wide barrier or wait for the Black Opal Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Canberra. “It was a pretty ordinary set-up for him two weeks ago and it doesn’t look much better this week if we don’t get scratchings,” he said.

Willydoit heads dual Blamey attack for Maher

Last year’s New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Willydoit (Tarzino) will be out to boost his Australian Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) claims when he contests Saturday’s Blamey Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) at Flemington. Now in his second preparation with Ciaron Maher, Willydoit has yet to recapture the form that delivered the New Zealand Derby at Ellerslie last March. He resumed in the MRC Foundation Cup (Gr 3, 1600m) at Caulfield on February 7, finishing near the tail of the field behind his stablemate, Light Infantry Man (Fast Company). Maher’s assistant trainer Jack Turnbull said race shape and the absence of headgear contributed to the below-par performance. “The race was brutally run and with Light Infantry Man winning it from on speed, it says a lot about the shape,” Turnbull said. “He was back, no headgear, floating along and never got involved. His late splits were positive enough, but he did nothing for the first three-quarters. He’s had a couple of good gallops, he gets on the bigger track, the mile again, blinkers on – there’s a lot more going his way this week. His main early aim after this run is the Australian Cup.” Stablemate Holymanz (Almanzor), who finished third in the MRC Foundation Cup following a freshen-up, also lines up in the Blamey. “We could have gone to the All-Star Mile, but we’ve decided on the softer option to try and get him winning again,” Turnbull said. “If he runs up to his last start, he’ll be right in the finish.”

Seasoned Knightsbridge shoots for Skyline glory

Tim Clark expects much of the attention to centre on Golden Slipper favourite Warwoven (Sword Of State) in Saturday’s Skyline Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Randwick, but believes Knightsbridge (Farnan) has the fitness and experience to test the unbeaten colt. Trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, Knightsbridge resumes for the first time since finishing fifth in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m), with the Skyline marking his third interstate campaign. “The two-year-olds seem to be taking it in turns and are fairly even,” Clark said. “Bjorn’s colt has put down a couple of good performances, so I suspect all eyes will be on him on Saturday to see how he returns. Knightsbridge has been well-seasoned. He’s travelled to Melbourne, he’s travelled to the Gold Coast. Nothing phases him. He’s a really sensible colt and he’s going to handle anything thrown at him.” Saturday will be Clark’s first raceday ride aboard Knightsbridge, although he has partnered him in official trials and regular trackwork. Clark also rides stablemate By Choice (Written By) in the Sweet Embrace Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m). The filly returns to Sydney after finishing third in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic. “She trialled beautifully at Rosehill and she’s a very straightforward filly,” Clark said. “She is honest, will give her all and she will give them something to catch.”

Richards keeping options open with Tapinforpar

The Morphettville-based training partnership of Gordon Richards and Damien Moyle will monitor weather conditions before confirming plans for Tapinforpar (Spieth). The gelding is entered for Saturday’s Dominant Advantage Handicap (1400m) at Morphettville Parks, but predicted rain could see him diverted to Murray Bridge the following week. Richards said he is in good order, having put together a solid preparation. “This prep has been really good,” he said. “He won first-up over 1200 metres at Gawler and I thought he was in the wrong part of the track second-up. He didn’t get beaten far. Last start he ran well again but, being a big horse, he had trouble getting through the field and then dived late.” Richards acknowledged Tapinforpar may be better suited on Morphettville’s spacious course proper than the tighter Parks circuit, but the 1400-metre distance remains key to his campaign. “We’ve tried him over a mile a couple of times and he tends to over-race early and then doesn’t have the same finish,” he said. “The only 1400-metre races are at Murray Bridge or the inner track here.” While Tapinforpar has drawn favourably for Saturday, Richards said the weather could yet dictate a change of plans. Richards has retained Connor Murtagh, who partnered the gelding at his most recent outing. “We’ve stuck with Connor because he rode him well and the horse seemed to respond to him. Hopefully that continuity pays off.”

Oakfield Jupiter chases Final berth at Newcastle

Wyong trainer Damien Lane is optimistic Oakfield Jupiter (Toronado) can secure a place in the Provincial-Midway Championships Final (1400m) when she contests Saturday’s $150,000 Qualifier (1400m) at Newcastle. The lightly raced four-year-old has won four of six starts and was set for the series following successive Midway victories in the spring. “For a while now she’s just reminded me of the right type of horse for this series,” Lane told Racing NSW. “She’s not there to make up the numbers by any means. I genuinely think she’s a really good show.” Lane has previously qualified runners for the Final but believes Oakfield Jupiter profiles as his strongest contender to date. “We mapped out this plan and if she qualifies on Saturday that’s perfect,” he said. “If she doesn’t, we have three weeks to the Kembla heat, but we’d love to qualify now.” Oakfield Jupiter ($6.50) endured a tough run when beaten 2.3 by Kreon (Rulership) at Randwick three weeks ago, a performance Lane rated highly. A favourable draw will allow jockey Keagan Latham to adopt more economical tactics. “It’s about time we drew a gate,” Lane said. “It’ll be the first time we’ll be able to put her behind the speed, switch her off and use her turn of foot. She hasn’t had the chance to get cover and relax and attack the line.”

Cambridge Stud family chasing further 3YO success

Cambridge Stud and Kingsclere Stables will look to add another major three-year-old success when Zivou (Bivouac) lines up in next Saturday’s $4 million NZB Kiwi (Listed, 1500m) at Ellerslie. The Roger James and Robert Wellwood-trained son of Bivouac (Exceel And Excel) is a half-brother to Queensland Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Pinarello (Tavistock), who delivered the partners the memorable victory in 2022. Cambridge Stud representative Scott Calder said the farm’s principals, Sir Brendan and Lady Jo Lindsay, were pleased to contest the NZB Kiwi with a homebred from one of their most successful families. “He’s from a family that has been extra special to Sir Brendan and Lady Jo,” Calder said. Zivou is out of Zonza (Zabeel) who won five races including the Ladies Day Vase (Gr 3, 1600m). Zonza has produced multiple stakes performers including Pinarello, Group 1 winner Vernazza (More Than Ready) and Group 3 performer Bavella (Snitzel). Zivou has won two of his five starts and enters the NZB Kiwi off a sixth placing in the Uncle Remus Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) at Ellerslie, where he raced wide throughout behind fellow NZB Kiwi contender Belle Cheval (Savabeel). Connections acknowledge the challenge posed by hot favourite Well Written (Written Tycoon) on Saturday week but believe Zivou can be competitive with a softer run in transit. “He’s been a bit of a late maturer, but he keeps taking steps forward,” Calder said. “We are very grateful to Roger and Rob for getting the horse to the race and we are hopeful he can run up to his pedigree.”

Kingsclere seeking another Derby scalp

In addition to Zivou's NZB Kiwi bid at Ellerslie next Saturday, Kingsclere will be in search of Derby glory courtesy of New Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) runner-up Autumn Glory (Ocean Park). The stable has a proud history in the New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m). Roger James prepared five winners before Robert Wellwood joined him in partnership, securing his first in the Classic with Orchestral (Savabeel) in 2024. They hold a strong hand again, headed by the daughter of Ocean Park (Thorn Park) who firmed to favourite with Classic winner Ohope Wins (Ocean Park) set to miss the race and head to Chris Waller in Australia. “In the Waikato Guineas [Gr 2, 2000m] she beat the boys and in the Oaks she showed she can definitely see a mile-and-a-half out,” Wellwood said. “She has ticked a few boxes that probably most haven’t in the race and she has come through the Oaks in superb order.” Stablemate Road To Paris (Circus Maximus) is a $4.20 equal second favourite after finishing runner-up in his past two starts, including the Avondale Guineas (Gr 2, 2100m). Wellwood said there is improvement to come. “He ran second in the Avondale Guineas doing things completely wrong. He is a very high-class horse, but he has really got to learn to do things the right way around to be winning it.” Ariadne (Almanzor) will also back up from the Oaks after finishing fourth. “She had a bit of interference at the top of the straight. I’d love to see an uninterrupted run for her. She certainly wouldn’t be out of it,” Wellwood said.

Home mile test for Checkmate

Checkmate (Credit: Race Images)

Group 2 performer Checkmate (Mongolian Khan) will return to his home track of Matamata on Saturday as trainers Lance O'Sullivan and Andrew Scott continue to plot a path towards longer distances. The Okaharau Station-bred and raced gelding will contest the Colchester Engineering 1600 (1600m) after connections were forced to abandon plans to run in the Kaimai Stakes (Listed, 2000m) a fortnight ago when heavy track conditions intervened. Checkmate returned to form with a third placing in the Rich Hill Mile (Gr 2, 1600m) at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day and followed that with a fifth in the Aotearoa Classic (Gr 3, 1600m). O’Sullivan said the stable remains keen to test him at 2000 metres provided he performs to expectations this weekend. “We were going to run him over 2000 metres in the Kaimai Stakes, but when the track came up like it did we thought it wasn’t going to give the horse a fair crack,” O’Sullivan said. “He had one go at 2000 metres in the Rosehill Guineas, but it was at the end of his prep and we didn’t really get a line on him. We will probably look to step him up after this race, but let’s see what he does.” O’Sullivan has been satisfied with the gelding’s recent work and expects him to be highly competitive on a more suitable surface. “He should be very competitive. We will be disappointed if he is not hard to beat,” he said. “The horse is going well and in 12 months’ time he is going to be a real racehorse.”

HK: Purton confident Voyage Bubble can rebound

Zac Purton (Credit: HKJC)

Zac Purton believes Voyage Bubble’s (Deep Field) below-par last start can be overlooked as the seven-year-old prepares to take on Romantic Warrior (Acclamation) in Sunday’s Hong Kong Gold Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) at Sha Tin. Trained by Ricky Yiu, Voyage Bubble finished a distant third behind the globetrotting superstar in January’s Stewards’ Cup (Gr 1, 1600m), a defeat that ended his Triple Crown aspirations. Purton said there were clear excuses for the performance. “He slipped coming out of the gates, lost his balance and his confidence,” Purton said. “He never felt comfortable or in a rhythm throughout the race and didn’t perform at his best.” The Australian rider, who partnered Voyage Bubble to victory in December’s Hong Kong Mile (Gr 1, 1600m), said the gelding had since trialled strongly and appeared to have regained his fluency. “Since then, he’s trialled really well. I can feel he’s moving nicely again and we know he can handle 2000 metres,” Purton said. “It’s a small field and it’ll be tactical. Barriers will be important, but I’m hopeful we can turn the tables.” Yiu was satisfied with Voyage Bubble’s recent trial, in which he briefly headed Romantic Warrior. “He’s still showing his form,” Yiu said. “He’s very consistent and will run well again, but it’s a big task.” Voyage Bubble has drawn barrier six in the six-runner field, with Romantic Warrior to jump from gate four.

HK: Bentley confident Stormy Grove can make Classic Cup impact

Harry Bentley believes Stormy Grove’s (Toronado) explosive late burst last start provides genuine grounds for optimism ahead of Sunday’s HK$13 million Hong Kong Classic Cup (Listed, 1800m) at Sha Tin. The Frankie Lor-trained gelding secured his place in the second leg of the Four-Year-Old Classic Series with a last-to-first victory in a Class 3 contest over a mile at Sha Tin on February 14. Drawn barrier 14 and only gaining a start due to a late scratching, Stormy Grove charged home to score by three-quarters of a length. His final 400-metre sectional of 21.85s was the fastest recorded on the card. “His closing sectional was really quick,” Bentley said. “And just the way the race panned out makes it all the more impressive for him to do what he did.” The Australian-bred son of Toronado (High Chaparral), formerly trained by Patrick and Michelle Payne before his transfer to Hong Kong, will step up to 1800 metres for the first time on Sunday. “We’re under no illusions,” Bentley said. “We’re going in against some really smart horses and we’ve got to step up in distance again. But he’s getting there.” Bentley, who has partnered the gelding in all six of his Hong Kong starts for a win, second and third, said the horse remains a work in progress. “He’s learning on the job still and there’s a lot of improvement to come. He’s quite green and still has a tendency to run around a little bit,” he said. “If he can relax like he did last time, he’s certainly one to watch.”

UAE: Sing Dragon set for Super Saturday task

Karis Teetan believes Sing Dragon (Written Tycoon) is “in with a shout” ahead of his overseas debut in Saturday night’s Mahab Al Shimaal (Gr 3, 1200m) at Meydan. The six-year-old lines up on Dubai’s Super Saturday programme, bringing solid Sha Tin dirt credentials to the contest, having won five times on the surface. He arrives in form after a Class 2 second in December and a pleasing recent trial behind the brilliant Ka Ying Rising (Shamexpress) and unbeaten three-time winner Salon S (Zousain). “I felt like his trial here behind Ka Ying Rising and that horse of Frankie Lor’s was good,” Teetan said of the Chris So-trained gelding. “His form was good when he left Hong Kong.” While Sing Dragon previously raced in Australia before transferring to Hong Kong, this marks his first international venture as a Hong Kong-trained runner. Teetan has been encouraged by reports from the stable since arrival in Dubai. “It was nice to hear that Chris is very happy with the horse’s condition and he has travelled well,” Teetan said. “If he can handle the track, I think he will be in with a shout. The rider who rides him in the morning said he looks like he is handling it okay.” Sing Dragon faces a stiff test at Group level, with 2025 Dubai Golden Shaheen (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Tuz (Oxbow) and the in-form El Nasseeb (Profitable) among his rivals.

UK: HKJC announces first-ever Shergar Cup appearance

Vincent Ho (Credit: HKJC)

The Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) has announced a landmark step in its global racing engagement, confirming it will field its own team for the first time at the 2026 Shergar Cup at Ascot on Saturday, August 8. The 25th running of the world-renowned jockeys’ competition will also be staged under the World Pool banner for the first time, further strengthening its international reach. Replacing last year’s Asia team, the newly formed HKJC side will comprise three Hong Kong-licensed jockeys, captained by Vincent Ho, best known as the long-time partner of three-time Hong Kong Horse of the Year Golden Sixty (Medaglia d’Oro). HKJC executive director of racing Andrew Harding said the Club was proud to be represented with its own team in the milestone 25th edition, highlighting both the depth of Hong Kong’s jockey talent and the ongoing commitment to supporting leading international events. The introduction of World Pool – now in its eighth year and operated by the HKJC in partnership with more than 20 international wagering operators – marks a significant development for the meeting. By commingling bets into a single global pool, World Pool delivers strong liquidity and broad international participation across major racedays. The 2026 Shergar Cup card will feature six races, with the HKJC team joining established squads representing Great Britain and Ireland, the Ladies and the Rest of the World.
