Zoustar filly out of Nudge lights up strong Premier opening

Lot 238: Zoustar ex Nudge filly (Credit: Inglis)

A combination of two expert judges of fillies by Zoustar (Northern Meteor), a powerful cross, and the buying power of Ozzie Kheir combined to produce the top lot on a particularly strong first day of trading at the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale at Oaklands.

Lot 238, the second foal out of $1.2 million prize-money earner Nudge (Fastnet Rock) from progressive Victorian breeders Two Bays Farm, was knocked down to Chris Waller and his main bloodstock agent Guy Mulcaster, in concert with Kheir and his regular partner Group 1 Bloodstock, for $850,000.

What's On

The filly was the stand-out lot ahead of a $520,000 Ghaiyyath (Dubawi) colt and a $410,000 son of Toronado (High Chaparral) on a day when a strong middle market pushed metrics markedly up on last year’s Premier auction, continuing strong momentum from the Australasian yearling sale season so far.

On Sunday evening, the sale’s average stood at $157,784 compared with $146,240 (an increase of 7.89 per cent) at the same stage last year, with the median up by $30,000 at $130,000, a massive 30 per cent increase.

With a clearance rate up six points to 77 per cent, the gross was up from $26.17 million to $30.61 million, with only 16 more lots sold (194 from 179).

Inglis Bloodstock CEO Sebastian Hutch was delighted with how the day transpired, with the quality of stock on offer and how it was taken up, particularly at a time when “the market is not easy” and buyers are “very discerning”.

“In advance of the sale, we thought we had a good catalogue and good buyer engagement, and with even luck we should be able to run a good sale, and that’s the way it’s played out,” Hutch told reporters.

“The clearance is up five points on last year, the median is up $30,000; I don’t think I’ve ever been involved in a sale where the median is up a third year-on-year. The average is up, which is a good effort given the clearance is up significantly, and it felt like a strong sale.

“On balance, the majority of horses sold and sold well and that was very pleasing.”

Hutch added: “The median tells you there was tremendous strength in the middle part of the market.

“For the median to go from $100,000 to $130,000 on the equivalent day 12 months ago - that’s very rare. Whether that can hold true through tomorrow, I don’t know - I expect as the clearance goes up, that will taper off.

“But we’re starting day two from a far stronger position than what we started day two on 12 months ago. And we felt pretty good at the end of day one last year.”

The Zoustar-Nudge filly, sold after a tense bidding duel involving several bidders on site and online, is the highest-priced yearling so far for the Mornington Peninsula’s Two Bays Farm, and represents tried and true pathways in many respects.

Zoustar over Fastnet Rock (Danehill) counts as probably the reigning champion sire’s finest nick. While others have a stronger stakes winners to runners ratio than this one’s 12 per cent, it has yielded eight black type victors, including three at Group 1 level, to be the Widden stallion’s only nick with multiple elite-level winners.

Two of those top-level stars are females trained by Waller - three-time Group 1 winners Joliestar and Zougotcha - the latter of whom was bought by Waller and Mulcaster at Inglis Easter for $500,000. The third such winner is Robert Sangster Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) queen Climbing Star.

Group 1 Bloodstock’s Mat Becker said he and Kheir knew just who to contact when they were drawn to the Zoustar-Nudge filly at Oaklands last week.

“We identified her and thought there’s no better judge of a Zoustar filly than Guy and Chris,” Becker said. “We reached out to see if they wanted to do something and they loved her as much as we did. They really wanted to buy her. We were thrilled to put our team together with theirs. Hopefully she’s the next Zoustar filly star in their stable.

“Chris also trained the mother, so they know the family. It’s a great cross - Zoustar over Fastnet Rock mares. It’s the right nicks.

“It gave us a lot more confidence when Guy and Chris came and they loved her as well.

“She would have been not out of place at Easter with the best fillies.”

Waller trained Nudge to four wins from 1400 metres to 1700 metres, highlighted by victories in a Brisbane Group 3 and Eagle Farm’s $500,000 Magic Millions National Classic (1600m). She was raced by a syndicate headed by the late Winx (Street Cry) part-owner Richard Treweeke, whose children Elizabeth and Rick now share ownership of the broodmare with Two Bays Farm’s Ross Ferris.

Hinting at the quality of this filly, her sister fetched $300,000 at the Premier sale last year, sold to trainer Grahame Begg and Rohan Hughes Bloodstock. With echoes of her dam and that mare’s co-owners’ famous family history, she’s now a two-year-old named Wink Wink, and is awaiting her first start.

Becker voiced great respect for his fellow Victorian Ferris, whom he’s known for “many years”, and who strongly patronises his local Premier sale.

“Ross is a great breeder and he sells his best horses here. She was in Melbourne Premier and she stood out. She was the star of the show,” Becker said.

“She’s a big and strong filly but she had great movement. She moved like a medium-sized horse. She had all the right features you look for in a Zoustar filly.”

He added: “We thought she’d make that sort of money. We were prepared to go as hard as we had to, to get her.

“We and Ozzie don’t buy a lot of yearlings. We try to buy quality - a handful each year to complement the team and the horses we have, especially in the [foreign] tried horse market. We try to buy quality and that’s what she was.”

Sunday’s top lot was also reward for concerted investment in mares in the recent past by Two Bays Farm.

“We’ve upgraded the quality of our mares in the last five years,” said Ferris, whose farm ended the day in second place among vendors by aggregate and average.

“Nudge came in as one of the earlier group. We went from just dabbling in the industry a little bit with moderately-priced mares and we decided to really up it. We’ve bought six or seven high-quality mares in the last two to three years as well.

“We’ve now got about 15 to 20 and it’s a really good group of mares. We’re over the moon with it in terms of the quality they’re producing - their conformation, their racetrack performance, their pedigrees.

“Probably next year we won’t have four or five fillies like the Nudge filly, but we’re hoping the year after we’ll be selling a really higher quality product here.”

Revelling in his most lucrative individual sale to date, Ferris said the filly had had 250-plus inspections and “took it all in her stride”.

“I’ve never had this experience before - people shoving microphones in front of my face,” he told the media pack.

“A big shout out to the Treweekes. They’re great partners, great people as well.

“It’s what you dream about. It’s not even so much about the number of dollars. It’s about the feeling of doing something really well, and being recognised by the industry and the buying board as well.

“Hopefully the next best feeling will be if she goes on and performs on the racetrack.”

She would have been not out of place at Easter with the best fillies

Sunday’s second top yearling was Lot 19, a son of surging Darley sire Ghaiyyath sold by Stonehouse Thoroughbreds to Lindsay Park for $520,000. The colt is a half-brother to VRC Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) winner Extra Brut (Domesday).

“We had to put a couple more bids in than we wanted to, but we really liked him,” said Lindsay Park co-trainer Ben Hayes.

“We’ve got some really nice clients who are coming in. The page is nice, Extra Brut was superb, and [other half-brother] Toronto Terrier was a good horse.

“He’s an athlete, he comes from a good farm and to get him, we’re really excited.”

Ranking third on the day was Lot 125, a colt by Toronado sold by South Australia’s Mill Park Stud to Malaysian trainer HY Cheng. The colt is a half-brother to Adelaide Listed winner Harleymoven.

“Absolutely thrilled. He was a colt that was really well sought from day one. He had pretty well everybody we could possibly imagine on him,” said Mill Park’s Chris Watson. “It was one of the highest number of inspections we’ve had on a horse here in Melbourne.”

Fittingly, a Victorian stallion topped the aggregates on day one, with Swettenham Stud’s Toronado grossing $3.04 million from 15 lots sold. Zoustar was number one by average, at $483,333, with three lots sold.

Lindsay Park and Dean Hawthorne Bloodstock were leading buyers, with four lots purchased for $1.05 million, ahead of Mick Price, buying four for $1.03 million.

Widden Stud was the top grossing vendor, with 13 yearlings realising $1.84 million, ahead of Two Bays (six for $1.73 million) at Yulong (12 for $1.69 million). Best by average (with three or more lots sold) was Bell River Thoroughbreds, on $335,000, ahead of Two Bays’ $288,333.

Meanwhile, Young farm Penfold Thoroughbreds and Adelaide hobby breeders Greg and Wendy Barber enjoyed a boom result riding the wave of Ghaiyyath, when their filly by the Darley stallion was bought by Begg for $300,000.

Lot 116 is the fifth foal out of I’m Wicked (More Than Ready), whose dam Rose O’ War (Danehill) won four stakes races and ran second in the VRC Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m).

The Tabilk farm’s owner Hannah Penfold was overwhelmed by the sale, which came after considerable drama as she prepared her 11 yearlings for Premier, thanks to Victoria’s January bushfires.

That meant her horses were already familiar with the Oaklands complex, since Penfold moved them there while the fires raged.

“When the fires started rolling through, I may have been a bit over-dramatic in evacuating, but it was me and 11 yearlings,” said British expat Penfold, who set up her operation little more than two years ago.

“I wasn’t putting people in danger, I wasn’t putting my horses in danger. I think I made the right decision to bring them to Oaklands.

“The fire never reached us, but I could see it, and then lightning sparked a fire just two kilometres down the road. I thought, ‘I’ve got to get out; I’ve got to get these horses to safety’.

Penfold, who moved the yearlings back home after four days, was delighted for the Barbers.

“I don’t think they’ve sold a horse of that calibre before. Their top lot was something like $80,000, and they’ve never ventured out of Adelaide with a horse,” she said. “I’m delighted for them. This is life-changing.”

Morning Briefing

Australia

Wodeton and Angel Capital to represent Waller in the Newmarket

Wodeton (Credit: Sportpix)

Chris Waller has taken encouragement from Wodeton’s (Wootton Bassett) jump-out victory at Flemington as the colt builds towards Saturday’s Newmarket Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m). Wodeton and stablemate Angel Capital (Harry Angel) stretched their legs in a Friday morning hit-out down the straight, with Wodeton edging out his rivals in the piece of work. While Waller is not known for priming his runners to win trials or jump-outs, he said the performance would serve as a timely confidence boost for the colt. “I don’t like winning jump-outs, but he needs a bit of confidence,” the trainer said. The son of the late Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj) has been placed at the highest level, finishing narrowly second in both the Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) and Golden Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) and a Group 1 breakthrough would significantly enhance his stallion credentials. Waller indicated Wodeton is likely to be retired at the end of the season, with international ambitions also under consideration. “Down the straight opens up options of going overseas if you manage to win the Newmarket,” he said, flagging Royal Ascot as a possible target. Meanwhile, Angel Capital, who will also be chasing a maiden Group 1 on Saturday, was restrained at the rear in the jump-out. “We just wanted him to get a good look at the track and keep him well contained,” Waller said. Both colts are also being aimed at the William Reid Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Caulfield on March 21, with the Sydney option of the TJ Smith Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Randwick on April 4 also under consideration.

Rawiller booked for Giga Kick ride

Star sprinter Giga Kick (Scissor Kick) is poised to return to Sydney for the first time in almost 18 months when he lines up in Saturday’s Challenge Stakes (Gr 2, 1000m) at Randwick. The gelding has not raced in the harbour city since finishing runner-up to Bella Nipotina (Pride Of Dubai) in the 2024 The Everest (Gr 1, 1200m). Saturday’s 1000-metre sprint shapes as his launching pad towards The Championships. Clayton Douglas floated the six-year-old north on Saturday. A final call will be made on his participation following a key gallop on Tuesday, with Nash Rawiller booked to ride. “Everything seems to be on target,” the trainer said. “Hopefully we will get a bit of give in the ground. That’s going to be the main thing for him. It will be another run towards the TJ and then hopefully we’re ready to go.” The program mirrors his 2023 campaign, when Giga Kick finished third in the Challenge before running second to I Wish I Win (Savabeel) in the TJ Smith Stakes. Douglas will also send Top Reward (Shamus Award) to Sydney after his encouraging first-up fifth to Observer (Ghaiyyath) in the Autumn Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Caulfield. The three-year-old holds entries for the Rosehill Guineas (Gr 1, 2000m) and ATC Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) but is set to resume in the Phar Lap Stakes (Gr 2, 1500m) at Rosehill on March 14. “He’ll trial on Thursday at Randwick and then it’s nine days to the race,” Douglas said, adding blinkers could be applied in the lead-up.

Smith pair out to enhance Championship hopes

Mudgee-based trainer David Smith will launch a two-track assault on Monday as stablemates Instead (Lonhro) and A Boy Named Soo (Sooboog) chase vital wins to boost their hopes of securing a berth in the $150,000 Country Championships Southern Wild Card (1400m) at Goulburn on March 22. Instead heads to Tamworth for a Benchmark 78 (1600m), backing up nine days after finishing third in the Central Districts Championship (1400m) at Mudgee. A Boy Named Soo lines up in the concluding Benchmark 66 at Bathurst, chasing a hat-trick after scoring on the Mudgee undercard when he missed a start as an emergency in the feature. “Looking at the heats over the weekend, that’s going to be our competition. I still believe she will have to win,” Smith told Racing NSW of Instead, who sits on a Benchmark rating of 68. “That’s why we are stepping up to the mile.” Already a winner at 1800 metres, the mare was bred by Godolphin and had one trial for James Cummings before joining Smith. She has since won three of her past five starts. “If she happens to win, that will give us a nice three-week buffer to bring her back to 1400 metres,” he said. A Boy Named Soo has surged from a rating of 48 to 59 with successive wins and, while a wide draw at Bathurst poses a challenge, Smith is prepared to roll the dice. “He’ll probably still miss out even if he wins but you’ve got to have a go,” he said.

Planet Red set to step up in distance

Planet Red (Admire Mars) is set to step up to 2000 metres for the first time as the dual Group 1 mile placegetter searches for his first win since August. Co-trainer Michael Kent Jnr said the Alister Clark Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m) at Caulfield on March 21 looms as a logical target, though the Rosehill Guineas on the same day remains in contention. The colt also has just 49 kilograms in the Doncaster Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) at Randwick on April 4. “We know he’s an excellent miler – his sire Admire Mars was a world-class miler – but we are thinking of exploring 2000 metres for him next time,” Kent Jnr told Racing.com. Planet Red again had little luck from a wide barrier when flashing home behind Observer in Saturday’s Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m), mirroring his pattern in the spring’s Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) when he was forced back from a tricky draw and came home to take second behind Autumn Boy (The Autumn Sun). “If we drew a gate, it might have been interesting,” Kent Jnr said. “We’ve just been forced to go back from wide gates.” After beating Planet Red twice this campaign, Observer is likely bound for the Australian Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) at Flemington on March 28 under weight-for-age conditions. Elsewhere, Sixties (Flying Artie) is expected to head to Sydney for a Doncaster tilt, while Victorious Spirit (Ghaiyyath) is likely to press on to the Rosehill Guineas after closing strongly alongside the former and Planet Red on Saturday.

32 for Shamus Award

Afternoon Siesta (Credit: Race Images)

Rosemont Stud sire Shamus Award (Snitzel) registered his 32nd individual stakes winner when the John Bary-trained Afternoon Siesta (5 m ex Princess Snooze by Hard Spun) surged home to take Sunday’s Cuddle Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) at Trentham. Ridden by Kelly Myers, the five-year-old mare tracked into the race strongly approaching the home turn and accelerated into a gap on the rail, going clear before holding off a barnstorming late bid by She’s A Dealer (Ace High) to win by 0.2 lengths. Marotiri Molly (Per Incanto) finished another 1.3 lengths back in third. Bred by Barree Stud, Afternoon Siesta is out of Princess Snooze (Hard Spun), an unraced daughter of the Listed-placed Snooze (Archway). She was secured by Graham Stewart for $4,000 through the 2023 Inglis July (Late) Online Sale and subsequently entrusted to Bary. The mare has been a model of consistency since debuting at Trentham last April, winning four of six starts and placing in two others, with prize-money earnings now exceeding $191,000. Shamus Award covered 94 mares in 2025 at a reduced fee of $33,000 (inc GST). He has 14 more lots to go through the ring at Inglis Premier, with seven having sold on day one, the highest-priced a Two Bays Farm-consigned colt out of Group 3 placegetter Platinum Mam'selle (Fighting Sun) who sold for $260,000.

Group 1 winner Savaglee retired

Savaglee (Credit: Race Images)

Group 1 winner Savaglee (Savabeel) has been retired and will transition to stud duties, with connections now weighing up whether the four-year-old will stand in New Zealand or Australia.

Bred by Waikato Stud, the son of champion sire Savabeel (Zabeel) was purchased for $400,000 by Rick Williams on behalf of The Oaks Stud principal Dick Karreman at the 2023 New Zealand Bloodstock Book 1 Yearling Sale.

Out of the O’Reilly (Last Tycoon) mare Glee, a sister to the Group 3-placed Symphonic and closely related to dual Group 1 winner Orchestral, Savaglee was prepared by Pam Gerard to win seven of 17 starts, highlighted by victory in the New Zealand 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m).

He later crossed the Tasman and finished a gallant second to Feroce (Super Seth) in last year’s Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) at Flemington. After failing to recapture his peak form as a four-year-old, minor joint issues detected following his recent Taupo run, in which he finished fourth of five, prompted retirement.

“He was an absolute standout and the form around him in the Australian Guineas was great,” Williams said. “He was a very good two-year-old, he ran in the best races. He won a Group 3 [Matamata Slipper] but like most Savabeels, they improve a lot from two to three.

“He’s got a pedigree to die for and is a prime candidate to go to stud. I’m not sure yet whether we stand him or sell him, but we will probably sell him. There are just a number of things with the sale of the farm, there are a few irons in the fire.

“I remember being at the Inglis Premier Sale the next day [after Australian Guineas] and a number of Australian trainers came up and said, ‘what a brave run.’ They recognise him in Australia, so he’s a possibility to stand over there I’m sure.

“I’d like him to stand in New Zealand because even if we sell him, we’ll probably stay in him. We will work through that over the next few days. We love the horse, he’s a wonderfully intelligent animal, and I’m sure he will be very successful in stage two of his career.”

48 for Toronado

Toronado (Credit: Swettenham Stud)

The Frankie Lor-trained Stormy Grove (4 g ex Seagrove by Exceed And Excel) provided his Swettenham Stud sire Toronado (High Chaparral) with his 48th individual stakes winner when he landed an upset victory in the Hong Kong Classic Cup (Listed, 1800m) at Sha Tin on Sunday. Bred by Swettenham principal Adam Sangster, Rebecca and Simon Lurati’s Ealing Park, John Dickson’s Sandown Lodge and Tim Jones, Stormy Grove was a $135,000 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale purchase in 2023 for Nardoo Valley Stud’s Philip George, from the Collingrove Stud draft. A half-brother to the stakes-placed Deekay (Hellbent), he is the best of five winners from six to race out of the Exceed And Excel (Danehill) mare Seagrove. Toronado covered 84 mares last spring at an unchanged fee of $88,000 (inc GST). The son of High Chaparral (Sadler’s Wells) has 17 lots still to sell at Inglis Premier after his progeny made a good impression at the opening session, with eight selling for $200,000 or more. The highlight was the colt out of proven stakes producer Inishmore (More Than Ready), who sold to X Bloodstock for $410,000.

JPN: Lebensstil bounces back to winning ways

Lebensstil (6 h Real Steel - Tokai Life by Tokai Teio) bounced back to winning form on Sunday, landing her fifth Graded victory in the Nakayama Kinen (Gr 2, 1800m). Ridden by Keita Tosaki for Hiroyasu Tanaka, the six-year-old defeated last-start Grade 3 winner Kalamatianos (Rey De Oro) by a length and three-quarters, with the third-placed Ecoro Walz (Black Tide) just a neck further away.

32 for Too Darn Hot

Darley’s shuttle sensation Too Darn Hot (Dubawi) sired his 32nd individual stakes winner when his son Title Role (3 c ex Valiant Girl by Lemon Drop Kid) claimed Saturday’s UAE 2,000 Guineas (Listed, 1600m) at Meydan. Trained by Simon and Ed Crisford, the colt came with a strong run between runners for Ryan Moore and went on to score by a length in the Listed contest. Godolphin colts filled the places, with Pacific Avenue (Dubawi) second and Talk Of New York (Wootton Bassett) just a nose off his Charlie Appleby-trained stablemate in third. Bred by Hascombe and Valiant Stud, Title Rose initially sold to Blandford Bloodstock for 90,000gns at Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale before making 500,000gns to the Coolmore partners at the Craven Breeze-Up Sale at two. He is one of seven winners out of Grade 3 scorer Valiant Girl (Lemon Drop Kid), herself a sister to dual Group 2 winner Bronze Cannon and a half-sister to Group 2 winner Across The Stars (Sea The Stars). Having covered 110 mares in Australia last spring, Too Darn Hot is currently standing at Dalham Hall Stud at a fee of £100,000 (approx. AU$189,435). The son of Dubawi (Dubai Millennium) has seven lots remaining at Inglis Premier after two lots sold on day one for $240,000 and $260,000 respectively.

UAE: Rebel’s Romance shines in City Of Gold

Iron horse Rebel’s Romance (8 g Dubawi - Minidress by Street Cry) notched the 21st victory of his glittering career with a dominant display in Saturday’s Dubai City Of Gold (Gr 2, 2400m) at Meydan. Last seen finishing runner-up to Ethical Diamond (Awtaad) in the Breeders’ Cup Turf (Gr 1, 12f), the Charlie Appleby-trained eight-year-old travelled well under William Buick before being angled into the clear on the home turn. The veteran lengthened immediately, going on to score by a length and a half over Fort George (Territories) with Burdett Road (Muhaarar) another five and three-quarter lengths back in third. The victory sets up a potential clash with Calandagan (Sea The Stars) in the Dubai Sheema Classic (Gr 1, 2400m) on March 28.

UAE: Meydaan impresses in Al Maktoum romp

The Simon and Ed Crisford-trained Meydaan (5 g Frankel - Nezwaah by Dubawi) potentially found his calling on Saturday, running out a ready winner of the Al Maktoum Classic (Gr 2, 2000m) on the Meydan dirt. A Listed winner at three, the son of Frankel (Galileo) ventured to Australia last spring and, while running admirably, could manage only midfield placings in the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) and Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m). Switched to dirt for the first time at the weekend, the five-year-old gelding proved his class with a five and a quarter-length victory over defending champion Walk Of Stars (Dubawi) with Tap Leader (Tapiture) another three-quarters of a length back in third.

UAE: Quddwah lands Singspiel Stakes

Simon and Ed Crisford’s memorable meeting at Meydan was kicked off by Quddwah’s (6 h Kingman - Sajjhaa by King’s Best) stylish win in Saturday’s Singspiel Stakes (Gr 2, 1800m) – the sixth stakes win of his career. The six-year-old, who began the year with victory in the Zabeel Mile (Gr 2, 1600m) at the same track, successfully stepped up in distance to land his third Group 2 by two and a half lengths over Dividend (Kodiac) with Holloway Boy (Ulysses) finishing just a head away in third.

117 for Dark Angel

Yeomanstown Stud sire Dark Angel (Acclamation) registered his 117th individual stakes winner when Lion Lake (3 f ex Urjuwaan by Cape Cross) caused an upset in Saturday's Herecomesthebride Stakes (Gr 3, 8f) at Gulfstream. Sent out at 11-1, the filly enjoyed a soft run along the rail under Tyler Gaffalione before angling into the clear at the five-sixteenths. Once balanced, Lion Lake quickened strongly, reeling in hot favourite Sister Troienne (Munnings) to score by a head at the wire. Storm's Wake (Oscar Performance) was another three-quarters of a length back in third. Bred by Camas Park, Lynch Bages & Summerhill, Lion Lake was a €150,000 purchase out of Camas Park Stud at the 2024 Goffs Orby Yearling Sale. He is a brother to dual Group 1 winner Alfareeq out of the winning Cape Cross (Green Desert) mare Urjuwaan. Dark Angel is standing for €45,000 (approx. AU$74,755).

Four for Lexitonian

Lexitonian (Speightstown) was supplied with his fourth individual stakes winner when She Be Smooth (3 f ex Seattle Smooth by Quiet American) produced a devastating display in Saturday’s Davona Dale Stakes (Gr 2, 8f) at Gulfstream, announcing herself as a Kentucky Oaks (Gr 1, 9f) contender. The Calumet Farm homebred swept from last of seven at the quarter pole to land the mile contest by six lengths over My Miss Mo (Uncle Mo). On Time Girl (Not This Time) was another half-length away in third. She Be Smooth is the best of three foals to race out of Grade 1-winning mare Seattle Smooth (Quiet American). Lexitonian is standing at Calumet Farm for a $7,500 (approx. AU$10,540) fee.

US: Commandment bags Fountain Of Youth

Commandment (3 c Into Mischief – Sippican Harbor by Orb) enhanced his Classic credentials with a determined victory in Saturday’s Fountain Of Youth Stakes (Gr 2, 8.5f) at Gulfstream. Trained by Brad Cox, the Wathnan Racing-owned colt proved his effectiveness around two turns, wearing down Chief Wallabee (Constitution) to score by a neck under Irad Ortiz Jnr. Solitude Dude (Yaupon) finished another two lengths back in third. The performance earned Commandment 50 qualifying points toward the Kentucky Derby (Gr 1, 10f) at Churchill Downs on May 2, almost certainly securing his place in the starting gate should the field be oversubscribed.

US: Lush Lips adds to tally in Honey Fox

Grade 1 winner Lush Lips (3 f Ten Sovereigns - Lamyaa by Arcano) took her record to six victories in 12 starts when she took out the Honey Fox Stakes (Gr 3, 8f) at Gulfstream on Saturday. Once again ridden by Tyler Gaffalione, the Brendan Walsh-trained three-year-old beat Classic Q (Classic Empire) by three-quarters of a length, who in turn finished a neck in front of third-placed Silver Moonlight (Liam’s Map).

US: Grand Sonata snaps losing run

Grand Sonata (7 h Medaglia D'Oro - A P. Sonata by A.P. Indy) snapped a losing run stretching back to September 2024 when landing Saturday’s Mac Diarmida Stakes (Gr 2, 11f) at Gulfstream Park. Trained by Todd Pletcher and ridden by Tyler Gaffalione, the seven-year-old bagged his fourth stakes success, and sixth overall as he beat Echo Lane (Treasure Beach) by a half-length. Anegada (Midshipman) finished third, a further three-quarters of a length away.

39 for Nyquist

Jonabell Farm resident Nyquist (Uncle Mo) sired his 39th individual stakes winner when Iron Honor (3 c ex Orenica by Blame) moved into Triple Crown contention with a victory in Saturday’s Gotham Stakes (Gr 3, 8f) at Aqueduct. Ridden by Manuel Franco for Chad Brown, the colt made it two wins in as many starts as he beat Crown The Buckeye (Yaupon) by a length, the front two stretching six lengths clear of the remainder, who were led home by Right To Party (Constitution). Iron Honor, who was bought for $475,000 by agent Monique Delk from the Gainesway consignment at the 2024 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, was bred by Mike and Pat Freeny in Kentucky out of the winning Blame (Arch) mare Orencia. He is her second foal and first to race. She also has a two-year-old Audible (Into Mischief) colt named Spears. Nyquist is standing for a fee of US$175,000 (approx. AU$245,925).

US: Thought Process lands Buena Vista

Thought Process (3 f Collected - Creative Thinking by Creative Cause) made the most of the drop in grade when she struck in Saturday’s Buena Vista Stakes (Gr 2, 8f) at Santa Anita. Having her first start since finishing third in the Del Mar Oaks (Gr 1, 9f) back in August, the Phil D’Amato-trained filly scored by two lengths under Hector Berrios, to notch her fourth stakes success in nine starts. Vibez (Collected) finished second, a neck in front of Grand Slam Smile (Smiling Tiger).

Bet Bet Creek gamble pays off as Stonehouse strikes $520,000 Premier high

Trevor Marshallsea

ANZ News

Lot 19: Ghaiyyath ex Dom Perion colt (Credit: Inglis)

Ryan Arnel had a hunch he was doing the right thing in 2014 when he bought a property near Eddington, between Ballarat and his home town Bendigo, on which to produce racehorses.

For a start there was a babbling brook running through it, and he liked the sound of it in more ways than one. It was called Bet Bet Creek.

And for a man whose initiation to the game came through watching races with a grandmother who managed Victoria’s first TAB, it all fitted together rather well.

“I bought the farm with a ten grand deposit and managed to bluff the bank to convince them to give me some money and away I went,” Arnel said of the farm, which he named Stonehouse Thoroughbreds.

In keeping with the name of that creek, Arnel doesn’t mind a bet or two. And that wager on the farm has been paying dividends of late for the affable, laid-back studmaster, who’s had a varied background on both sides of the sales ring, working both with stud farms around the world and with auction houses.

Two years ago, Stonehouse sold a Toronado (High Chaparral) colt for $460,000 at Inglis Premier. He was a half-brother to VRC Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) winner Extra Brut, and his price was a new personal best for the farm.

On Sunday at the same sale, they smashed it thanks to the same dam, with another half-brother by hot sire Ghaiyyath (Dubawi) selling to Lindsay Park for $520,000.

“I guess it is our new record,” Arnel told ANZ News minutes after the gavel fell. “I hadn’t thought of that yet, with everything going on.

I bought the farm with a ten grand deposit and managed to bluff the bank to convince them to give me some money

Ryan Arnel

“It’s a phenomenal result, really. We’re only a small crew on the farm but we get the job done.

“Like all small businesses, it’s a roller coaster. It’s just me. I don’t have any investors or backers. Melissa Jordan, my second in charge, is an absolute gem. It’s like working with family.”

Sunday’s sale of Lot 19 to one of Australia’s biggest stables was emphatically a triumph for the little guys.

The 200-acre Stonehouse runs up to 50 mares, of which about a dozen are the farm’s own, by Arnel’s best estimate.

“All I know is the accountant always says that my biggest issue is that I’m my biggest client,” Arnel said with a laugh.

“But we love the game, we love the horses. You always think you’re onto something, so I’m a sucker for buying the next mare.”

Also, like that Toronado half-brother Toronto Terrier - who won twice in Melbourne in a tragically truncated career for the late Mike Moroney - the Hayes Brothers’ new colt was bred by Andrew McDonald, a bathroom renovator from a dot on the map called Congupna, near Shepparton.

McDonald and partner Bek have three mares to work with in their breeding hobby, and this particular one - Dom Perion (Redoute’s Choice) - is now a rags-to-riches story of epic proportions.

They bought her when she was carrying Extra Brut at the Inglis Great Southern Sale of 2015 for $6,000. Her produce has now realised them just one grand short of $1.7 million - not bad for a mare who came their way through a fair bit of happenstance.

“We sold a Skilled filly at the weanling section of that sale for $14,000,” McDonald told ANZ.

“We had an $8,000 Street Boss service fee to pay - that was back when you could go to Street Boss for $8,000 - and so we only had $6,000 left over.

“We were looking for a mare, because we had just one other one at home, in-foal. So we hung around to buy another mare so we’d have a mate for the one at home.

“She [Dom Perion] was a winning Redoute’s mare, so it was a bit of a no-brainer. But still, I didn’t even go and look at her because I thought she’d be too expensive. I only saw her in the ring, and I managed to buy her.”

Ironically, the mare likely came cheap because she was carrying a future VRC Derby winner.

“I think it was because she was in-foal to Domesday,” McDonald said. “No disrespect, he can get a good horse, but he wasn’t really fashionable.

“But she’s just the most beautiful mare. She’s not a big mare - and she also didn’t look too happy to be at the sale, so maybe that helped us too. But she’s done everything right for us. She leaves a cracking type.”

Ben Hayes (Credit: Inglis)

McDonald was delighted with Sunday’s sale, especially after “a couple of ordinary years when we were selling fillies for $15,000 or taking them home”.

“That soon cuts into your margins, so this is a huge result for us - a big catch-up,” said McDonald, who’s sending a three-year-old Lonhro (Octagonal) filly out of Dom Perion to Grahame Begg, and will be keeping a sister to Sunday’s Ghaiyyath colt.

“So we’ll have two fillies out of the mare, and then you don’t need any more broodmares really, especially if those two do something. I also bought a three-quarter sister to Dom Perion online last year, and she’s in-foal to Nicconi.”

Arnel was delighted for McDonald.

“It’s the result we all hope for, for people like that. It shows that in this industry, you don’t have to be right up there in terms of size to be in it, and be a part of it. They buy a mare for six grand and this is a result they’ve got,” said Arnel, who brought 25 yearlings to his local Victorian sale.

“As we’ve gone through the week, the inspections have been through the roof. On the stats on who’s looking at horses, this is arguably the best sale. It just keeps getting stronger and stronger.

“To bring a horse of this quality here, we had the utmost confidence the buying bench would find it, and it’s worked out in our favour.

“By all reports, he’d be in the top two most popular horses on the complex. He was very well received and as a horse he just handled it immaculately. He was brilliant.”

Brilliant Romantic Warrior edges closer to Triple Crown glory

Romantic Warrior (Credit: HKJC)

An imperious Romantic Warrior (Acclamation) made light work of five rivals at Sha Tin on Sunday afternoon by winning a second Hong Kong Gold Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) for Danny Shum and James McDonald, following on from his success in 2024.

Sauntering to a four-length victory in the Triple Crown’s second leg, which follows his win in the Stewards’ Cup (Gr 1, 1600m) and will climax with the Champions & Chater Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) on May 24, Romantic Warrior won a record-extending 13th Group 1 – the most for a Hong Kong-trained horse.

McDonald said: “He’s just beautifully prepared. Danny’s just done a marvellous job, and each and every time I hop on him, I just cherish the moment. I feel so special every time and you look between his ears and he’s just so alert.”

The gelding broke smoothly from barrier four to settle third as Beauty Joy (Sebring) made the running. Turning into the home straight, McDonald peeled out aboard Romantic Warrior and the bay exploded to the front with ease. John Size’s Ensued (Lemon Drop Kid) held on for second, while Francis Lui’s Winning Wing (Preferment) was a closing third.

Shum said: “It’s a small field, and he’s very fit, actually. His condition is getting better and better. The 2000 metres is his best trip. I think he can handle it [2400 metres], but I don’t know if any overseas horses will come [in May], but I think they have a lot of potential.”

Boasting world-record earnings of HK$254.66 million (approx. AU$46.25 million), 2021 Hong Kong International Sale graduate, Romantic Warrior, clocked 1m 59.77s as he covered the final 400 metres in 22.52s. The eight-year-old was purchased for HK$4.8 million by owner Peter Lau, and has also won Group 1 races in Australia, Japan and the United Arab Emirates.

Shum indicated Romantic Warrior will chase a fourth QEII Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) after wins from 2022-2024 on Champions Day (26 April) before the Triple Crown’s last leg, the Champions & Chater Cup.

Beyond this season, Shum didn’t rule out returning to Saudi Arabia, the site of his famous close-up defeat to Forever Young (Real Steel) in last year’s Saudi Cup (Gr 1, 1800m).

“I think he will now go to the QEII Cup and then to the Champions & Chater before he finishes the season,” Shum said. “Maybe next season we will go to the Saudi Cup – we will keep everything open for now.”

The victory saw Romantic Warrior join Viva Pataca (Marju) (2008 & 2009), Military Attack (Oratorio) (2013 & 2014), Designs On Rome (Holy Roman Emperor) (2015 & 2016), Time Warp (Archipenko) (2018 & 2020) and Golden Sixty (Medaglia D’Oro) (2021 & 2023) as dual Hong Kong Gold Cup winners since the turn of the century.

The only Triple Crown winners in Hong Kong racing history are the trailblazing River Verdon (Be My Native) (1993/94) and Voyage Bubble (Deep Field) last season.

Bentley and Stormy Grove deliver Hong Kong Classic Cup shock at Sha Tin

Stormy Grove (Toronado) delivered a sensational run at long odds to score an upset and claim the second leg of the Four-Year-Old Classic series, the Hong Kong Classic Cup (Listed, 1800m), at Sha Tin on Sunday.

Ridden by Harry Bentley, the son of Toronado (High Chaparral) made it two wins in a row and landed the Hong Kong Classic Cup with a performance reminiscent of his explosive 1600-metre showing at Sha Tin two weeks earlier, when, after being drawn 14, he surged from last to first to claim his first Hong Kong win.

Having jumped from barrier 12 at odds of 21-1 for Sunday’s race, the chestnut broke well and settled at the rear of the field. After enjoying a problem-free passage, he was called upon for an effort as they turned for home with 500 metres to go. Bentley drew Stormy Grove wide and urged the Frankie Lor-trained gelding to challenge, and once again he swooped home in a race-fastest final 400 metres sectional of 23.04s, finishing a length clear of the fast-closing Invincible Ibis (Hellbent), who led home Patch Of Cosmo (Super Seth) and Numbers (Tivaci).

“This feels extremely special,” said Bentley, who has been in the saddle for each of Stormy Grove’s seven Hong Kong runs. “I’ve liked this horse throughout, and I’ve struck up a good partnership with him. I was extremely impressed with the way he won last time. I had to come into this race with a certain level of expectation and hope. But to do it the way he did was pretty breathtaking.”

It was Stormy Grove’s first run over 1800 metres, and he’ll need to break new ground again when he goes for Hong Kong Derby (Listed, 2000m) glory on March 22.

“This ranks very highly on my wins in Hong Kong, and it’s very special,” said the winning rider. “He's stepped up again, and he can do it. Same again, now, to the Derby.”

Lor felt a suitable pace aided his charge, and said a similarly run race on Hong Kong Derby Day might lead to further glory for the Australian-bred Stormy Grove: “I thought if the pace was suitable for him, he could do the same thing as last time at 1600 [metres].

“Next is 2000 [metres], and I think if the pace is suitable for him, then he can do the same thing. I think if he can settle, like today – he settled real good, and also the jockey – he knows the horse, he can have a very strong finish.”

It was a standout day for Jerry Chau, who continued his fine form this year as he registered his tenth, 11th and 12th winners since the beginning of February, and surpassed 200 Hong Kong winners.

His treble began with victory aboard three-year-old Chill Partners (Hellbent) after a thrilling finish to the Class 4 Citi Private Bank Handicap (1400m), which provided Francis Lui with his 31st winner of the season.

“All I was thinking in that race was getting a smooth run,” Chau said. “Whether he was a little bit back or in the lead, as long as he had a comfortable race, I trusted he would finish well.”

Chau partnered with Lui to good effect again when Galactic Voyage (Impending) prevailed in the Class 3 Citi Wealth Advisory Services Handicap (1200m).

“He is a very good horse and in trackwork, he’s just very settled and relaxed,” said the winning rider. “He just does his own work and on race day, he wants to win.”

Chau sealed his treble with a surging win aboard the Cody Mo-trained Emblazon (Zoustar) in the card-closing Class 2 Citi Credit Card Handicap (1400m). It was the talented four-year-old’s fifth win from six outings this term and his fourth win in a row.

“He’s a very, very good horse,” said Chau, who is currently fourth in the jockeys’ championship standings. “In the beginning, he didn’t show his heart yet, but when he was ready, he’s improved with every race. After every race, and when I ride him at trackwork, I feel him improving, and I’m grateful every time he shows me his best.”

Of reaching the 200-win landmark, Chau, a product of The Hong Kong Jockey Club’s Apprentice Jockeys’ School, said: “After I graduated in 2021, everything was more of a challenge, and I had to fight for it … I’m really happy with 200 winners. I need to thank the trainers who have supported me and the owners as well. If not for their support, I can’t reach that milestone.”

Three-year-old Conrad Patch (Zousain) built on two good runs and several promising barrier trials to register his first win for Mo, who completed a brace, in the first section of the Class 4 Citi Ultima Handicap (1200m), with Hugh Bowman, who also claimed a double, grabbing his 36th winner of the campaign.

Bowman’s second winner came courtesy of Tony Cruz’s Gentlemen Legacy (Showtime) in the Class 3 Citi Investment Services Handicap (2000m).

Andrea Atzeni and Pierre Ng struck in the Class 4 Citi Wealth Handicap (1800m) with Storm Runner (Microphone), who has now won twice in succession after blanking in his first 16 starts in Hong Kong.

Short-priced favourite Circuit Fiery (Tavistock) continued a strong run of form with a one-and-three-quarter-length victory in the Class 4 Citigold Private Client Handicap (1400m) for Chris So and champion jockey Zac Purton.

So made it a pair when Pakistan Legacy (Epaulette) made all under James Orman in the second section of the Class 3 Citi Insurance Services Handicap (1200m).

Brett Crawford’s impressive debut season continued when Warriors Dream (Oasis Dream), ridden by Lyle Hewitson, broke through in the Class 4 Citigold Handicap (1200m), claiming a first win in 11 outings.
