The rare and unorthodox breeding wizardry of Ric Jamieson earned emphatic financial validation as his Gilgai Farm dominated another powerful day’s trading in the closing session of Book 1 at the Inglis Premier sale.

Concentrating solely on their local sale this year, Gilgai sold the day’s first, second, fifth and sixth highest-priced yearlings to finish as leading Book 1 vendor by aggregate, with 13 lots realising $3,740,000. They ranked second by average, with their $288,000 mark shaded by Bell River Thoroughbreds, who sold four at an average of $301,000.

What's On

Gilgai’s Monday trading was highlighted by Lot 499 - the colt bought by Malaysian trainer and investor Cheng Han Yong after a spirited bidding duel for $750,000, with Ciaron Maher the underbidder.

While that colt is by a fiercely in-demand stallion in Darley’s Too Darn Hot (Dubawi), Jamieson’s punt on less commercial sires reaped rewards in the sales of two exceptionally built fillies. In heady scenes at Oaklands, they were bought back-to-back by Astute Thoroughbreds’ Louis Le Metayer.

He paid $625,000 for Lot 419, a daughter of another Darley sire in Kermadec (Teofilo), who stood for $16,500 (inc GST) at time of conception. Moments earlier, Le Metayer paid $450,000 for Lot 418, a filly by Widden Stud’s Written By (Written Tycoon), whose service fee in 2023 was $27,500 (inc GST).

Rounding out Gilgai’s leading quartet was a filly by a more commercial stallion - one of Jamieson’s many breeding triumphs in Ole Kirk (Written Tycoon), the exciting young Vinery Stud sire in whom he remains a major shareholder. Lot 329, went to Bennett Racing for $430,000.

Gilgai’s heavyweight day two foursome realised $2,255,000 at an average of $563,750, and highlighted another strong session of trading which surpassed even the highest hopes of Inglis.

On Monday evening, with Book 2 to come on Tuesday, the sale had grossed $60.71 million. That was not only well up on the same stage last year ($52.55m) - albeit with 37 more lots sold - but it had also already surpassed the overall gross for Books 1 and 2 in 2025 ($53.84m).

The average was $146,990 compared with $139,759 at the same stage last year, with the median up $20,000, to $120,000. The clearance rate was running at 79 per cent, up from 76 per cent.

“At the end of day two, for the gross to have exceeded last year’s gross for the end of day three already, was really pleasing,” said Inglis Bloodstock CEO Sebastian Hutch.

“The gross is up $8 million year on year. I feel that’s a good testament to the quality of horse the vendors gave us to sell.

“We were confident of running a good sale and I think it’s fair to say it’s played out even better than we had expected.”

Hutch said various reasons lay behind a more attractive catalogue this year. While there were no seven-figure lots in Book 1, after two were sold last year, the great strength through the middle market in the $300,000-$400,000 range drove metrics up.

“I think it’s a combination of factors. If you take Gilgai as an example, they’re supporting this sale exclusively this year. Last year they also had a draft at Easter,” Hutch said.

“We’d like more local vendors to see the value in the opportunity that presents.

“At the same time, a strong cohort of interstate vendors participated in the sale, and they’ve had good sales. That’s been good for the sale also.”

Still, Hutch cautioned that “there are parts of the market that are hard” and Inglis was aware of “challenges breeders and vendors face”.

“Whilst we can reflect on lots of positive things, a certain amount of our focus will be on - how do we make the parts of the market that didn’t go so well, better,” he said.

Gilgai was celebrating another resounding Premier sale after leading the averages last year, for more than three lots sold, with their 2025 draft including a colt by Toronado (High Chaparral) who equal-topped the sale at $1,000,000.

Jamieson, a highly successful businessman who’s happy in his own company and has become somewhat reclusive in recent years, has made an artform of breeding along a path less taken. Even his most successful product Black Caviar (Bel Esprit) was by a sire who was no runaway success with only two Group 1 winners, even if one was a phenomenon.

The bold Jamieson method paid strong dividends, in the sales ring for now, when his eye-catching Kermadec and Written By fillies turned the combined $44,000 in service fees it took to create them into $1,075,000 through the bidding of Le Metayer, who’ll send them to Maher.

And while Too Darn Hot is in keen demand now, and stood for $275,000 (inc GST) last spring, Jamieson was eager to patronise him from his first Australian season at $44,000, though a far greater buzz surrounded his fellow Darley shuttler Blue Point (Shamardal).

Jamieson’s right hand man Kelly Skillicorn recalled: “I told him, ‘You’re mad, mate - he’s done nothing this horse. And everyone else was all on Blue Point. I said ‘We’ve got to send to Blue Point’.

“But his quote to me always is, ‘You just feed ‘em and I’ll breed ‘em’.”

Contrasting their rivalry in Europe, Too Darn Hot has famously gone on to outshine Blue Point in Australia, winning the first-and second-season sires’ titles, and building a 9.72 per cent stakes-winners-to-runners ratio in this country.

In addition, Jamieson’s decision to send Turaath (Oasis Dream) - a dual stakes-winning mare he bought for $1 million - to a $16,500 stallion in Kermadec, to create Monday’s Lot 419, now looks a distinctly inspired choice. So too is his sending the unraced Tune Doubt (Not A Single Doubt) to Written By to breed Lot 418.

“They’re just nice horses, and they look like they can gallop,” Skillicorn told the media of the duo, while Jamieson was elsewhere.

“He [Jamieson] is really honed in. He’s only breeding 25 horses a year, so it’s not like he’s covering all bases and taking a scattergun approach.

“And every other year there’s a Group 1 winner, and every year there’s stakes winners.

“I don’t know if Ric’s the best breeder in the country, but he certainly must be one of them.”

He added: “I don’t know why he breeds like that, but he’s worked for 30 years putting this program together that does his matings.

“It’s not a commercial decision. We bought Turaath for a million bucks, because he loved her. No one else is going to breed it to Kermadec, because they’re going to take some commerciality into it.

“But Ric’s not afraid to do it because it’s his hobby. He’s worth enough money. He’s a very successful businessman. He just does it for a hobby and he can breed to whoever he wants to, because he wants to breed racehorses.”

I don’t know if Ric’s the best breeder in the country, but he certainly must be one of them

Kelly Skillicorn

Gilgai’s day-topping Too Darn Hot colt - the number two overall after Sunday’s $850,000 filly by Zoustar (Northern Meteor) - is out of Baveno (Street Cry), who only won a Kembla Grange maiden. But second dam Neroli (Viscount) won four stakes races including Rosehill’s Queen Of The Turf Stakes (Gr 1, 1500m).

Cheng, who buys under his investment concern X Bloodstock, has not immediately made clear his plans for the colt.

The Selangor-based trainer made a splash at Premier, purchasing four colts for a combined $1.82 million to rank second among buyers. They include another from Gilgai in Lot 87 - a colt by another non-commercial stallion in Doubtland (Not A Single Doubt) who became his sire’s record sale at $320,000.

"It has been a long-term plan to attend Inglis Premier and I gave [Inglis’s Victorian bloodstock manager] James Price a specific brief of what we wanted, and that was to see the best colts in the sale,” an X Bloodstock spokesman said. “We have been able to buy four.

"Lot 499 was just an absolute athlete. He had scope, he had size and strength, he had an amazing temperament.”

Le Metayer brought his hardball game to a nerve-wracking five-minute period when he bought what to that point were the two most expensive lots of the day.

The $450,000 Lot 418, by Written By, is the fourth foal of an unraced Not A Single Doubt (Redoute’s Choice) mare whose dam Jestajune (Rory’s Jester) threw dual stakes winner Jukebox (Snitzel) and the dam of another current sire, Group 3 victor Bruckner (Snitzel).

Seconds later Le Metayer usurped himself, this time prevailing in a still more tense bidding duel - with trainer Nick Ryan - to land Lot 419 by Kermadec. She’s the first foal of Turaath, the British-bred winner of Flemington’s Let’s Elope Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) and a Listed event. Second dam Fadhayyil (Tamayuz) and third dam Ziria (Danehill Dancer) also won stakes races, in Europe.

Kermadec and Written By might not leap into most judges’ lists of Australia’s top ten stallions, though the former at least has four elite victors including two Oaks winners in Willowy and Amokura, and his star performer Montefilia, another female.

But Le Metayer has great faith in Jamieson’s breeding, saying Gilgai was “an exceptional farm who have bred elite horses year in year out, often by obscure stallions”.

Lot 419: Kermadec ex Turaath filly (Credit: Inglis)

“Their mating strategy is exceptional and when you’re buying an elite horse from a farm like that, you know you’ve got a good chance,” he said, adding the Gilgai factor was worth around “ten per cent” in his considerations.

“We went to visit Gilgai a few times. Last year we took [Two Bays Farm’s] Ross Ferris there, whose intention is to be the next Gilgai. There’s not many farms like this in the world. I’ve travelled around, and there’s not many farms that can produce champions year in and year out, to the level of Black Caviar.

“So it’s a factor. But the horse has got to stack up - the horse and the pedigree and the mental and the demeanour.”

Le Metayer was confident his back-to-back buys met all of those requirements.

“I look at thousands of fillies each year, and I just thought she was the best athlete I’d seen all year,” he said of his Kermadec filly.

“I think she’s going to be an elite three-year-old. She has a phenomenal action, and obviously a very good pedigree. The dam is from a strong European family, and we all know the dominance of European bloodlines here in Australia, and Kermadec is a sire who can get you a really good filly.”

The day’s third-top priced yearling was Lot 484, Milburn Creek’s grey son of Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt) from the stakes-placed Ariaz (Charge Forward) who was bought for $540,000 by My Racehorse, trainer Michael Freedman and Belmont Bloodstock.

‘Extreme Choice is such a good stallion, and having the colt go to a trainer like MIchael Freedman, who’s had really good success for us with Apocalyptic, Ninja and a few others, it’s a marriage made in heaven,” said My Racehorse’s Ben Willis.

“He looks fast, looks like an early two-year-old, and hopefully he can do that on the track.”

Maher purchased the day’s fourth-top priced yearling in Lot 470, a $480,000 colt from the first crop of his dual Derby and Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) hero - and now Arrowfield Stud sire - Hitotsu (Maurice).

The leading stallion from Book 1 was Swettenham Stud’s Toronado, who had 30 lots sold for $4,955,000. Best by average - with three or more lots sold - was Widden’s Zoustar, with six sellers at $362,500.

Book 1’s leading buyer was Lindsay Park and Dean Hawthorne Bloodstock, with nine yearlings costing a combined $2,330,000.

Canterbury Stakes task for Beiwacht

Beiwacht (Credit: Sportpix)

Group 1-winning colt Beiwacht (Bivouac) will bid to return to his best when he tackles Saturday's Canterbury Stakes (Gr 1, 1300m) at Randwick. The Chris Waller-trained three-year-old landed the Golden Rose (Gr 1, 1400m) last season but was below par when eighth in the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) first-up on February 14 and the champion trainer hopes a return to what has worked best for Beiwacht will be the catalyst to a better effort this weekend. "It just didn't work out down the straight," Waller said. "He's got a very high cruising speed, but probably not high enough to be racing against 1000-metre horses. I think it's more a 12 to 1500-metre cruising speed, where he can sustain it. We've got to get him back into that type of racing and we thought the Canterbury Stakes was the best option. His win the Golden Rose in a similar type of race, his rating was through the roof – like, world-standard – so we've just got to try and simulate that and get back to that level." Beiwacht is one of three Waller-trained runners among the Canterbury Stakes entries, joined by Joliestar (Zoustar) and Lady Shenandoah (Snitzel), who finished first and third respectively in the Expressway Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) on February 14. "They both ran well first-up, Joliestar was awesome and she's come through it well," Waller said. "The 1300 [metres] will suit her and Lady Shenandoah was brilliant first-up as well. It was a slowly-run race and she got in a spot where she just needed a bit of time to get out of [but] she was strong to the line."

McArdle considering options with My Gladiola

My Gladiola (Credit: Sportpix)

John McArdle is keen to avoid another clash with Tentyris (Street Boss) as he decides on the next target for his filly My Gladiola (I Am Invincible). The daughter of I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) ran second to the Godolphin colt in both last year's Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) and in the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes first-up this campaign, and McArdle is hoping to swerve another run-in with the colt in this weekend's Newmarket Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) at Randwick. "We'll see what he [Tentyris] does and if she doesn't go to the Newmarket then she'd go to Sydney and trial up there and go to The Galaxy," McArdle said. "I'm 90 per cent sure she will run, but there are always factors to consider. We'll see how she gallops in the morning and see what the field comes up like." Craig Williams has been booked to partner My Gladiola, who was allocated 50.5 kilograms when Newmarket Handicap weights were released late on Monday afternoon, while Tentyris was given 57 kilograms, meaning the filly would meet her old rival on five-kilogram better terms than being beaten 0.8 lengths in the Lightning. "We obviously had the two kilos in the Coolmore and then a kilo-and-a-half in the Lightning because Jamie [Mott] rode her a half [kilogram] over," McArdle said. "But it'll be more like five or six kilos in the Newmarket, so that is a factor, but he is a very, very good horse."

Next paths for Godolphin stars revealed

Tempted (Credit: Sportpix)

Godolphin managing director Andy Makiv has revealed the future plans for some of the operations star performers after another successful weekend with Tempted (Street Boss) in the Surround Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) and Observer (Ghaiyyath) in the Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m).

The latter could line up in the Rosehill Guineas (Gr 1, 2000m) on March 21 or the Australian Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) against the older horses at Flemington a week later.

“I think it will be good to watch the Randwick Guineas this week and just see what we have coming out of that,” Makiv told The Verdict podcast.

“Whether it is Attica, or Green Spaces… where do they head next? Is there something really dominant there that is scarier than the Australian Cup? What does Pride Of Jenni do in the All-Star Mile, heading to an Australian Cup? What does Tom Kitten do? There is so much to analyse.

“The beauty for him is that he has choices. We will do what we hope is the best decision for him to continue to build his profile. It is important for our company – we are a stallion business – and it’s really important for his profile and Ghaiyyath’s profile.”

Meanwhile, Tempted could head for the Arrowfield 3YO Sprint (Gr 2, 1200m) back at Randwick on April 11.

“She’s had five starts at Randwick now for four wins and the second was to Ka Ying Rising,” Makiv said.

“Clearly, that’s a really happy hunting ground for her. I’d say the Arrowfield would be right up there on our agenda. All going well with Tentyris, if he goes to the TJ [Smith], it keeps them separate from each other, as well.

“I’ll obviously bring Ciaron [Maher] in on this conversation. I think the Arrowfield might be five weeks [away]…so how he wants to get there, if that is the right race, or whether he’d rather do something different – I’m not sure – but that would be quite a sensible approach for a really good filly that goes back to her pet trip, at her favourite track, against three-year-olds, for a million dollars.

“I think the Arrowfield, at some stage, is going to be a Group 1. So, I think on her CV, it would be a wonderful addition, should she be good enough to get it done."

Record Snitzel colt lands second trial win

The Next Episode (Snitzel), who became the most expensive yearling by Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) to be sold at auction when returning $2.8 million at the 2025 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, landed his second trial win when scoring at Warwick Farm on Monday. Ridden by Jason Collett in his second appearance since running a well-beaten 11th in the Golden Gift at Rosehill in November, the Ciaron Maher-trained colt defeated Extremely Tempted (Extreme Choice) by 1.3 lengths over 820 metres. There was a further 1.6 lengths back to the third-placed Konomie (Wild Ruler). The Next Episode was purchased by Maher at the 2025 Gold Coast sale and a half-brother, by I Am Invincible, will be sold as Lot 341 at this month’s Inglis Easter Australian Yearling Sale. Out of the Proud Miss Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m)-winning mare Humma Humma (Denman), he is a half-brother to Group 3 scorer Price Tag (Zoustar). Meanwhile, promising Zoustar (Northern Meteor) colt Peyton extended his unbeaten trial run to three wins when defeating $1.2 million Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj) colt Vatican by 1.2 lengths over 820 metres. Peyton was passed in at Magic Millions in 2025 and retained by Rosemont Stud. He is the first foal out of Group 3-winning juvenile Mildred (Hinchinbrook), who was bought by Rosemont from the Inglis Chairman’s Sale for $850,000 in 2021. The other juvenile trial on the card was won by the Annabel and Rob Archibald-trained Hellenic Belle (Hellbent), who beat Chataigne (Brazen Beau) by 2.8 lengths. A $145,000 Magic Millions National Yearling Sale purchase for Triple Crown Syndications, Hellenic Belle is a full-sister to Group 2-placed juvenile winner Marokopa Falls.

Zahra to return at Caulfield Heath on Wednesday

Two-time Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m)-winning jockey Mark Zahra will make his return to race riding at the Caulfield Heath meeting on Wednesday. Zahra will take two rides on the eight-race card - Loud Charlie (Prague) in race five for Lloyd Kennewell and Lonstar (Cosmic Force) for Anthony and Sam Freedman in race seven. After enjoying an outstanding spring carnival, Zahra enjoyed a holiday and then returned to race riding in January. He rode at two meetings in January before fracturing his leg at the Sandown trials, which has ruled him out of race riding for the past seven weeks.

Vale Pat Hyland

Australian Racing Hall of Fame member Pat Hyland has died at the age of 84 following a long battle with illness. Over more than six decades, Hyland forged an illustrious career as a jockey and trainer in which the Port Fairy-raised horseman collected a list of accolades that places him among Australian racing’s all-time greats. Hyland started his jockey apprenticeship in 1956 with the late trainer Jim Moloney at nearby Warrnambool the day before his 15th birthday, however he moved to Mordialloc in Melbourne with Moloney just one week later. The pair’s friendship would prove crucial to Hyland becoming one of only eight jockeys in history to complete Australian racing’s ‘grand slam’ of victories with Hyland securing the 1969 Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) on Moloney’s champion sprinter Vain (Wilkes) alongside his wins in the 1965 Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) (Star Affair), 1984 Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) (Affinity) and 1985 Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) (What A Nuisance). Hyland notched 30 Group 1 victories in the saddle before retiring in 1990 to focus on his training career. Hyland prepared over 500 winners as a trainer including Group 1 winners Zarita (Pentire) and Bonaria (Redoute’s Choice) with his experience as a jockey and ability to ride trackwork proving influential to his success. Hyland was inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame in 2016 where he was recognised for excellence as both a jockey and trainer. He formally retired from training in 2020 due to ill health and to spend greater time with his wife Maree at their family property in Nar Nar Goon North. Hyland is survived by wife Maree, daughter Joanne, sons Paul, Matthew, Chris, Samuel and Patrick, along with 17 grandchildren.

Tulsa King eyeing Derby crown

Tulsa King (Credit: Race Images)

Aaron Bidlake admits he has always been a dreamer and this Saturday he is hoping one dream can turn into reality when his smart three-year-old Tulsa King (Staphanos) lines-up in the New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) at Ellerslie. Bidlake has long held aspirations of competing in the $1.25 million Classic, and later this week he will realise that ambition when he treks north with his diminutive gelding, who he bought online for just $1,500. The son of Staphanos (Deep Impact) failed to flatter in his first two starts for former trainer Barry Donoghue as a two-year-old, beating just one runner home on debut at Trentham last May before finishing last at Te Rapa a fortnight later. Tulsa King was subsequently offered on gavelhouse.com, and after some analysis, Bidlake thought he was worth a gamble, and he faced minimal opposition in the online auction, with his $1,500 bid securing the gelding, who he syndicated amongst family and friends. “He had two starts up north with Barry Donoghue and didn’t show a lot, but I had looked at his trials and I liked the way he trialled up,” Bidlake said. “He was obviously a very small horse, so he didn’t really suit the selling market, so they decided to move him on and we managed to get him for next to nothing.” A maiden win and placings in both the Wellington Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) and Gingernuts Salver (Listed, 2100m) have come from seven starts since moving to Bidlake and the pair will begin their journey north on Friday, stopping the night in Cambridge with good friend Shaun Phelan before heading to Ellerslie on raceday. “It is really exciting, we are only small players and only work a handful of horses,” he said. “I have had a bit of success as a jumps trainer and a couple of other handy flat horses, but to get a good three-year-old is great. I have always thought that the Derby was the ultimate goal, so to finally be getting one there is a great thrill.”

Riddell notches up century of wins

In just her second season in the professional jockey ranks, Amber Riddell brought up her 100th win at Hawera on Friday, and she was rapt to achieve the milestone so early in her career. Riddell started competing in the amateur ranks, winning four races before progressing into an apprenticeship under Kevin Myers and subsequently transferred to Awapuni trainer Lisa Latta earlier this season. It was on the Latta-trained Starpello (Star Turn) that she rode her 100th winner, at her 900th start, but Riddell admitted she wasn’t sure whether she had won on the line and she was relieved when she heard her charge’s name called out first over the loudspeaker. “I am really stoked to get it so early in my career,” Riddell said. “I didn’t think I had won, I thought Gryllsy [Craig Grylls] had got it, so I was relieved to hear the judge call out our name as the winner. I have ridden that horse a few times before and he went really well two starts back where he should have won, he just got held up late. I am travelling a lot this season, which I am really enjoying. I love riding down south and the racing down there is pretty strong, and the fields are big and competitive. A lot of the South Island trainers have supported me and I have become a regular rider down there. I just want to continue riding as much as I can and continue to support the South Island. I have also been getting more opportunities to ride in the Group and Listed races and on premier days. I am still yet to win a big race, but that is my next goal I am hoping to achieve.”

ANZ News

South Island racing lives in the shadow of that in the North. November and the two Group 1 New Zealand Guineas races is when Riccarton gets to shine. Late February or early March is Wingatui’s turn to be in the spotlight. The weather gods smiled and the ten race card offered stakes worth $1 million, a first for the country’s southernmost metropolitan track.

The day’s feature was the White Robe Lodge Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) which, at weight-for-age, makes it the most prestigious race south of Riccarton. Named after the region’s premier stud, the race honours a filly bred by stud founder Brian Anderton’s father which also provided the younger Anderton his first win as a jockey.

The 2026 running resulted in the lowest ranked runner as the winner. Cluedo Lane (Ghibellines), at his 23rd start, used a Benchmark 75 (1600m) race as his lead up but had to carry 61 kilograms before an apprentice’s allowance saw him carry 60 kilograms. His 78 rating was due to having placed in open company despite having only three wins to his name, Saturday’s feature just his fourth.

Final acceptances placed him on the ballot but with one scratching he gained a start. Without that he would have raced in the Benchmark 75 earlier in the day. His odds were surprisingly short ($9.10) given his rating compared with the other 15 White Robe Lodge Stakes runners.

He was first into stride but soon dropped into second before taking over near the 600m. Prior to straightening he kicked away and had three lengths on his opponents starting the run home. The lead stretched to four lengths at the 200m and remained the same 100m later. The field descended on him late but too late and he had a length to spare at the wire. Jockey Akshay Balloo can take all the credit for the win, catching the field completely off guard.

The six-year-old’s connections have been patient. He took eight starts to break his maiden (October 2024) as a five-year-old but win two took place at his next start while win three was his last start for that season on the synthetic at Riccarton. Saturday’s big win was his second start for new trainer Joe Waldron.

Cluedo Lane’s dam Treat Me (O’Reilly) was passed in at the 2013 NZB Karaka Yearling Sale then made $7,000 as a broken in two-year-old at NZB’s Mixed Sale in May 2014. She won once and from four foals to race has bred three winners.

Her sister is Fromm, dam of Battle Hero (Stratum), an 11-time winner in Perth who won two Group 3s and five Listed races. Recent Western Australian Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m) winners Storyville (Overshare) and Treasured Star (Toronado) can claim Fromm as their granddam.

As a yearling, Treat Me was offered by Waikato Stud and represents the foundation family of the stud, initiated when Garry Chittick purchased Georgina Belle (Pakistan II) in the USA, the mare having raced successfully as a two-year-old in New Zealand before she was exported.

Chittick sent Georgina Belle to England to be covered by Habat (Habitat), foaling Habania there. Habania was sent to Australia to land seven wins including at Flemington and Moonee Valley, recording a Group 3 third at Caulfield. Both ended up at Waikato Stud.

Habania was a wonderful matron for the stud producing 14 foals for ten winners including two Listed winners. Group 1 winners Probabeel (Savabeel), Vision And Power (Carnegie), Glamour Puss (Tale Of The Cat), Savvy Coup (Savabeel), Espiona (Extreme Choice), Steps In Time (Danehill Dancer), Dom To Shoot (Shooting To Win) and Never Been Kissed (Tivaci) all descend from Georgina Belle.

Cluedo Lane has a close connection to White Robe Lodge being by Ghibellines (Shamardal) who stood 11 seasons there, siring Turnbull Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) winner Smokin Romans and ten further stakes winners. Cleudo Lane was stakes winner eleven.

Ten and eleven

Ghibellines’ tenth stakes winner is Noble Knight who landed his maiden stakes success when taking out Saturday’s Dunedin Gold Cup (Listed, 2400m), 40 minutes prior to the Group 3 feature.

Ghibellines was represented by four runners including two eight-year-olds and it was these two who formed the quinella with Noble Knight a clear winner when drawing away from the 100m to score well from the fast finishing Capo Dell Impero (Ghibellines).

Noble Knight arrived at Wingatui in solid form. His previous start was a second in the Invercargill Gold Cup (2600m) and before that he was successful at Riccarton in the Marlborough Cup (2000m).

Noble Knight (Credit: Monica Toretto)

In Saturday’s win he sat wide into the straight, drew level with the leaders at the 200m but was too strong from the 100m and clearly the best stayer on the day to record his ninth win in 61 starts for earnings approaching $500,000.

His record includes an exasperating 15 second placings. Last November he finished third in the Metropolitan Trophy (Listed, 2600m) at Riccarton and last season, at the same track, was third in the Canterbury Gold Cup (Gr 3, 2000m). His first stakes placing was third in the 2024 Dunedin Gold Cup. He was perhaps overdue to land his maiden stakes win even though he’s in the twilight of his career.

Noble Knight’s connection to White Robe Lodge is even stronger than Cluedo Lane’s as he is not only by Ghibellines but is also from a mare by the stud’s former stallion Yaminan Vital (Sir Tristram) who raced successfully in Japan, winning five of his 15 races and recording a Group 2 placing. The connection doesn’t end there as Noble Knight’s granddam is by White Robe Lodge’s most successful ever stallion, multiple champion sire Noble Bijou (Vaguely Noble).

Noble Knight is the sole winner from his dam Flight Arrival (Yaminan Vital) whose half-brother Royal Flight (Danzighill) was a Listed winner of nine races. His great grandam Flight Judge (The Judge) is a half-sister to Champion New Zealand 3YO Our Flight (Imperial Guard). Their dam Jane Flight is a daughter of White Robe Lodge’s Champion Sire Mellay (Never Say Die).

The Andertons’ Ghibellines sired three winners on the day including race five, a Benchmark 75 event in which the first three home were by the sire. Sadly, Ghibellines passed away late last year.

Hello again

With three wins in seven starts including back-to-back stakes, Hello Hayley (Hello Youmzain) looks the pick of the South Island three-year-olds. Two weeks ago she took out the Southland Guineas (Listed, 1400m) and adding Saturday’s Dunedin Guineas (Listed, 1600m) has assumed top Southern ranking among her age group.

Hello Hayley (Credit: Monica Toretto)

From midfield she began her run from the 600m but was three wide into the straight. She found a lane on her inner from the 300m, ranged up to the leaders inside the 100m and did best of five good chances to score narrowly but well. This was a decent field and she won nicely. There are more wins in store for her.

Withdrawn from the 2024 NZB Karaka Yearling Sales, her dam is a winning half-sister to Waikato Gold Cup (Gr 3, 2400m) winner Bak De Chief (Chief Bearhart), herself the dam of the brilliant Te Akau Shark (Rip Van Winkle). Another half-sister is Bak De Princess (Danske), dam of Ellerslie Easter Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Ponderosa Miss (High Chaparral).

Wide awake

Found for $4,000 from an Inglis online sale, Afternoon Siesta (Shamus Award) appears wide awake, taking her imposing record to four wins in six starts when landing Trentham’s Cuddle Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) on Sunday, her maiden stake success.

Eligible for Benchmark 75 races, Afternoon Siesta was faced with a significant jump in class. Her previous start saw her run a 0.4 lengths second behind Anderson Bridge (Savabeel) in the Douro Cup (1600m), also at Trentham but the latter won again earlier on Sunday’s card when scoring at Benchmark 75 level carrying top weight of 59.5 kilograms, so the formline looked good. Nine of Afternoon Siesta’s opponents were stakes winners yet punters sent her out as favourite and she delivered – narrowly but well. She has plenty of ability.

Afternoon Siesta (Credit: Race Images)

From the jump she led briefly before settling fourth (rails) to the 600m. Kelly Myers moved her one lane wider into the home straight where the two leaders split, providing a perfect opportunity to pounce. She drove through, put a length on them at the 200m then ran to the line to hold out the very fast finish of She’s A Dealer (Ace High) by a head, turning $4,000 into $192,000.

The lightly raced mare is stakes winner 32 for Shamus Award (Snitzel) from Princess Snooze (Hard Spun), the latter an only foal. Her granddam Sooze (Archway) won six times and was twice stakes placed in Victoria. Sooze ranks as a three-quarter sister to dual Group 1 winner Roman Arch (Archway) from the family of the great Luskin Star (Kaoru Star). If $4,000 was beyond your budget, Afternoon Siesta’s dam could have been purchased from the same sale for $700.

NZB Kiwi update

Since last week’s Chronicles, three further slots for this week’s $4 million NZB The Kiwi (Listed, 1500m) have been filled.

As suggested last week, runner-up to Belle Cheval (Savabeel) in the Uncle Remus Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m), Panther (Ace High), has been secured for the slot held by Wexford Stables, who, unsurprisingly, train Panther. His run in the Uncle Remus was sound, taking ground off the winner late so he is worthy of a slot.

From the same race is fourth-placed L’Aigle Noir (Ribchester), also trained by Wexford’s Lance O’Sullivan and Andrew Scott. L’Aigle Noir fills Waikato Thoroughbred Racing’s slot. He broke his maiden late last year and his last three runs have been at Group 3 level including a strong finish for third in the Bonecrusher Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) in early December. His fourth in the Uncle Remus could have been better except for being held up late. He was in serious traffic until very late, driving through when the race was all over.

Sixth in the Uncle Remus Stakes was Zivou (Bivouac) who was caught wide throughout before finishing sixth. His prior form includes back-to-back wins, the latter in a big finish at Waverley. He has taken up the slot owned by Cambridge Stud.

Two slots, one belonging to Waikato Stud, and the other to the Kerri Spence Bloodstock & Clotworthy Racing team, will have to be filled this week.
