Lot 757: Extreme Warrior ex Who's Zooming Who colt (Credit: Inglis)

Like father like son, Extreme Warrior (Extreme Choice) was in high demand as his home farm Rosemont Stud finished the Inglis Premier sale powerfully in a solid Book 2 sale.

Following on from his super sire’s typically robust results in Book 1 - where Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt) ranked third on aggregate despite only eight lots sold - Extreme Warrior had Tuesday’s equal-top and equal-third priced yearlings.

What's On

Lot 757, the colt fourth foal of Who’s Zooming Who (Sepoy), fetched $220,000 when sold from Rosemont’s draft to trainer Lloyd Kennewell, Group One Bloodstock and SP Bloodstock.

Kennewell prepares the leading light amidst Extreme Warrior’s promising first batch of runners in Eternal Warrior, winner of Caulfield’s Merson Cooper Stakes (Listed, 1000m), third in the Blue Diamond Prelude (C&G) (Gr 3, 1100m), and an eye-catching 2.1-length sixth from well back in the Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) itself.

With Eternal Warrior on the fifth line of betting for the Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m), it was unsurprising to see Kennewell being keen to acquire another son of Extreme Warrior.

He shared top billing from Book 2 with Lot 794, a colt by Widden Stud’s Zousain (Zoustar) sold from the draft of Victoria’s Blue Gum Farm to Taiwan concern Elysian. The colt is the ninth foal of Group 3 winner Cavalry Rose (Charge Forward).

Comfortably behind those two $220,000 lots, Extreme Warrior and Rosemont also shared equal-third rank via Lot 614, bought by trainers John O’Shea and Tom Charlton in league with James Bester Bloodstock for $160,000.

The colt is out of the unraced Grammys (Starcraft), a daughter of AJC Gimcrack Stakes (Listed, 1000m) queen Spurcent (Flying Spur) and a half-sister to the dam of six-time stakes winner Revolutionary Miss (Russian Revolution).

On a strong day for the two leading Victorian studs, Blue Gum also shared third ranking with Rosemont thanks to Lot 646, a colt by Dirty Work (Written Tycoon) knocked down to Top Pick Bloodstock and Pang Chi Ping.

Rosemont was the leading Book 2 vendor by aggregate, with 11 lots sold for a combined $911,000, ahead of Blue Gum, who had ten lots sell for $674,000. Rosemont ranked second by average ($83,000), for three or more lots sold, behind NSW stud Fernrigg Farm, which sold three at $87,000. Blue Gum came in third, on $67,000.

Continuing Book 1’s strong momentum, Book 2’s metrics were up on last year.

On Tuesday evening, the gross stood at $7.15 million - up from $6.41 million in 2025 with 16 more lots sold (157 to 141).

The average of $45,567 had increased slightly from $45,436, with the median at $37,500 ($32,000) and the clearance at 78 per cent (72 per cent).

Those numbers were in keeping with the Book 1 stats showing a leap in the gross figure - from $53.67 million in 2025 to $61.44 million, with 30 more lots sold. The average was up $8,000 to $144,569, with the median climbing from $100,000 to $120,000 and the clearance rate up one point to 81 per cent.

There is incredible momentum behind this sale now, with an excellent set of results, particularly in the context of the market, following last year’s market-defying sale

Sebastian Hutch

For the overall sale, the gross on Tuesday night sat at $68.59 million, up more than $8.52 million, or 14 per cent, from the corresponding stage last year.

In a show of middle-market strength, 283 lots had sold for $100,000 or more, a significant 22 per cent rise on last year’s figure at the corresponding stage, while there were 15 per cent more $200,000-plus lots sold, and 17 per cent more $300,000-plus yearlings sold.

“There is incredible momentum behind this sale now, with an excellent set of results, particularly in the context of the market, following last year’s market-defying sale,” said Inglis Bloodstock CEO Sebastian Hutch.

“While it’s always satisfying to see the financial benchmarks improve year on year, what stood out to me as much as anything was the amount of people on the grounds not just on sale days but inspection days as well. The buying bench really got behind the sale again this year.

“We’re hugely grateful as always to the breeders and vendors who have supported the sale and I’m very proud of the effort the team at Inglis put into the sale.

“The diversity at the top of the market was great – the top 12 lots were all by different stallions, off service fees from as little as $16,500 so it goes to show there really is something for everybody at Inglis Premier.

“To have Premier as the southern hemisphere’s best performing yearling sale to this point of the season for the second consecutive year is a great thrill.’’

After Rosemont had another Extreme Warrior colt - Lot 349 - fetch $180,000 in Book 1 when sold to trainer Mick Price, the farm was delighted by the popularity of their seven-year-old stallion, whose encouraging start with runners comes despite some fertility issues, reminiscent of those of his sub-fertile sensation father Extreme Choice.

“We had a good time [on Monday] helped along by the fact we had a couple of very nice Extreme Warriors, since he’s got some momentum behind him at the moment,” Rosemont principal Anthony Mithen told ANZ News.

Lot 614: Extreme Warrior ex Grammys (Credit: Inglis)

“And if they were picking the catalogue a week or so ago, rather than last spring, these two would have been Book 1 horses.”

Mithen said the equal Book 2-topper out of Who’s Zooming Who was “the busiest horse I’ve ever had at a sale”.

“He came out of his box over 200 times, which is a massive load for a horse to carry, and did it with great aplomb and great temperament,” Mithen said.

“There was good reason for that. Everyone quite rightly thought the average for a nice horse in Book 2 would be about $30,000 to $40,000. What became apparent was that sort of price range was not befitting of this horse.

“He’s a beautiful horse. He looks like a two-year-old, with an early good strength-to-stretch ratio, where your strength matches your physical length and development.

“I’d be surprised if he wasn’t bobbing up somewhere before Christmas.”

Kennewell was ecstatic to secure the colt.

“The sale’s been tremendous, so many nice horses, and this horse … a very good judge and someone I respect said he’s in the top five per cent of the whole catalogue of colts, and I felt he was the best colt in the sale,’’ Kennewell said. “We go on physicals, we want fast two-year-olds and he looks all of that.”

Mithen said Lot 614 likely benefited from a slightly older relative, another Extreme Warrior colt out of a Starcraft (Soviet Star) mare who Rosemont sold at Magic Millions Gold Coast for $220,000 to Team Archibald et al.

“He’s a lovely horse that I think was probably helped a little by the fact our other Extreme Warrior out of a Starcraft mare was very well received at the Gold Coast,” he said.

“It might just be a cross that works, which would suit us, because we’ve got a few Starcraft mares given he spent a bit of time at Rosemont.

“We’re quietly optimistic Extreme Warrior’s trajectory is headed the right way.”

Lloyd Kennewell

Rosemont sold 27 of their 30 lots across Premier’s two books.

“That’s not a bad effort from a draft our size,” Mithen said. “It’s been a busy week, but a successful one, to only take three home.”

Gilgai Farm ended the sale as leading vendor, enjoying a ‘perfect’ sale selling all 13 lots offered for $3,740,000, while Bell River Thoroughbreds ended with the highest average (for three or more sold) at $301,250, having sold all four lots offered.

Morning Briefing

Australia

Two for Jonker

Jonker (Credit: Aquis Farm)

Aquis Farm’s first-season sire Jonker (Spirit Of Boom) chalked up his second individual winner on Tuesday when the Nicholas Beck-trained Hold My Hand (2 f ex Sakura Star by Rubick) landed an 1100-metre maiden at Dalby. Making her second career start after having run third in a 1000-metre maiden at Toowoomba in December, the juvenile filly proved a cut above her rivals as she defeated Lonesome Star (Lean Mean Machine) by 2.9 lengths under jockey Karl Zechner. There was a further 2.1 lengths back to Mishani Honour (The Mission) in third place. Purchased by her trainer for $25,000 during last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast March Yearling Sale, Hold My Hand is the only foal to race from two to come out of the winning Rubick (Encosta De Lago) mare Sakura Star. Jonker stood the 2025 breeding season at an unchanged fee of $12,500 (inc GST).

Entries for Inglis Weanling Sales Series closing soon

Entries for the 2026 Inglis Weanling Sales Series are set to close shortly, with momentum building after a record-breaking 2025 edition. A combined $29.4 million was traded across the Australian Weanling Sale and Great Southern Weanling Sale last year. Inglis also achieved a market-leading clearance rate and sold the two highest-priced weanlings in Australia in 2025. Since 2023, Inglis’ weanling turnover has grown by 28.3 per cent, and recent graduates include Group 1 stars Well Written (Written Tycoon), Streisand (Magnus), Hayasugi (Royal Meeting), and Kimochi (Brave Smash). Inglis bloodstock CEO Sebastian Hutch expects the upward trajectory to continue in 2026, particularly with the first progeny of stallions such as Shinzo (Snitzel), Cylinder (Exceed And Excel), Ozzmosis (Zoustar), King’s Gambit (I Am Invincible), Mo’unga (Savabeel) and Native Trail (Oasis Dream) set to feature. “Our weanling sales series gets better every year and I’m especially excited for it this year, with the opportunity to showcase the progeny of what looks a strong group of first-season sires,” Hutch said. “If we had one regret at the end of what was a hugely successful set of weanling sales last year, it was that we didn’t have enough really good foals to satisfy the demand of pinhookers in particular. The Inglis Yearling Sales Series is going well and I’m confident we can continue that momentum into the weanling sales, we just need to be given the opportunity with better quality stock.” The Australian Weanling Sale will be held at Riverside on May 4-5, followed by the Great Southern Weanling Sale at Oaklands on June 12.

Waller to have pair of runners in All-Star Mile

Champion trainer Chris Waller will launch a two-pronged attack on Saturday’s $2 million All-Star Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) at Flemington as he chases a first win in the feature. Veteran Buckaroo (Fastnet Rock) and fellow Group 1 winner Leica Lucy (Derryn) will represent the stable, both resuming off encouraging first-up efforts in the Futurity Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m). Runner-up in last year’s Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m), Buckaroo especially caught the eye when charging home first-up to be second in the Futurity. “It was great to see Buckaroo finishing his races off like we know he does,” Waller told Racing.com. “It’s exciting; he’s good at a mile and he’s got form around the right horses, so he’s back.” Leica Lucy, last year’s New Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) winner, finished fifth in the Futurity, just over a length from winner Pericles (Street Boss) after settling back and running on. “She finished off really well first-up,” Waller said. “She’ll come on nicely for the run. She had a couple of Group 1 placings last spring and it looks like she’s come back a bit better.” Buckaroo was rated an $8 chance with Sportsbet on Tuesday, while Leica Lucy sat on the second line of betting at $13.

Maher could add Jimmysstar to Newmarket team

A slick gallop at Cranbourne has prompted Ciaron Maher to consider an audacious Newmarket Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) start for Jimmysstar (Per Incanto). Maher revealed he would consult with connections before deciding whether to accept for Saturday’s Newmarket at Flemington, with the gelding originally set to resume in the William Reid Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) on March 21 before a Sydney campaign targeting the TJ Smith (Gr 1, 1200m) and All-Aged Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m). With regular rider Ethan Brown suspended, Mark Zahra partnered Jimmysstar in Tuesday’s hit-out. Zahra is booked to ride Tentyris (Street Boss) in the Newmarket. “Mark’s coming back from his ‘fake broken leg’, but he was keen to get down and he worked super,” Maher quipped. “It will be either this race or the William Reid, but I think Jimmy is coming up really well.” If Jimmysstar does not take his place, Group 1-winning mare Benedetta (Hellbent) will represent the stable after an eye-catching third in the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) first-up. She meets Tentyris four kilograms better at the weights for her 1.5-length defeat and will be chasing a third crack at Newmarket glory. Maher said the mare had returned in peak order. “The 1200 metres is going to be ideal. I think she’ll hit the line pretty hard,” he said.

Idle Flyer to return in Wenona Girl

Trainer Matthew Smith has carefully mapped out a path for talented mare Idle Flyer (Dundeel), with a Group 1 target firmly in sight this autumn. The four-year-old resumes in Saturday’s Wenona Girl Quality (Gr 3, 1200m) at Randwick, with the Queen Of The Turf Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at The Championships her grand final. A dominant winner of the Angst Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) in the spring, Idle Flyer was heavily backed into $3.60 favouritism for the Empire Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at Flemington in November but failed to fire behind Pride Of Jenni (Pride Of Dubai). Smith believes she was simply out of her comfort zone in Melbourne. “She’s going great. I can’t fault her,” Smith said. “There are a few sharper ones over 1200 metres, but I think she’ll be hitting the line strong late. That will set her up nicely to go to 1500 metres second up in the Emancipation on the 28th of March, then the Queen Of The Turf." The plan is to progress to the Emancipation Stakes (Gr 2, 1500m) on March 28 before peaking third-up at a mile. Idle Flyer sits on the second line of betting at $3.60 for the Wenona Girl and is rated a $15 chance for the Queen Of The Turf, where the potential presence of unbeaten star Autumn Glow (The Autumn Sun) looms as the key variable. "If Autumn Glow doesn't go there I reckon we're a great chance," Smith said. "We won't be drilling her on Saturday, just comfortable and make sure she hits the line strong and hopefully runs top three and then go to the Emancipation, same thing and then to the mile cherry ripe."

Messara not sure on distance step up for Autumn Glow

Autumn Glow (Credit: Sportpix)

James McDonald has made his preference clear for unbeaten mare Autumn Glow this autumn, but owner John Messara says a tilt at the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) is unlikely at this stage. Speaking on Racing.com’s The Verdict podcast, Messara indicated his preference is to keep the Arrowfield-owned star at a mile rather than stretch her to 2000 metres during this campaign. “I’m not certain she’ll get 2000 metres,” Messara said. “She’s out of a very fast mare. If we’re going to try that trip, my preference is perhaps later rather than now. My feeling is there is no need to extend her at the moment.” While no final call has been made, Messara said the Queen Of The Turf Stakes on April 4 shapes as a “great” option, run on the same day as the Queen Elizabeth at Randwick. He also hasn’t ruled out the Doncaster Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) a week earlier, despite Autumn Glow being allocated 56.5 kilograms. “I’ll listen to what the trainer says and what J-Mac says, because they’re very close to her,” Messara said. “At the end of the day, she’s an athlete and she has to compete against the best that is around.”

Sunshine Coast to have back-up Polytrack meeting

Racing Queensland has confirmed a contingency meeting will be staged on the Polytrack at Sunshine Coast Turf Club on Sunday, March 8, should the club’s scheduled turf meeting be unable to proceed. The back-up fixture will be activated in the event of heavy rainfall rendering the course proper unsuitable for racing. Any decision to transfer the meeting to the Polytrack must be made prior to 3pm on Saturday, March 7. If the contingency meeting is not required, it will be deleted with no fees applicable for nominations or acceptances. All benchmark and ratings races are worth $28,000, with the maiden events offering $30,000 in prize-money. Nominations for the meeting close at 11am on Wednesday, with acceptances due by 11am on Thursday. The Polytrack card can be found here.

Archer’s optimism unbending ahead of NZB The Kiwi

Belle Cheval (Credit: Race Images)

Experienced owner-breeder David Archer is optimistic ahead of Saturday’s $4 million NZB The Kiwi (Listed, 1500m) at Ellerslie as Belle Cheval (Savabeel) tackles unbeaten superstar Well Written (Written Tycoon). Prepared by Mark Walker and Sam Bergerson, Belle Cheval is the $9 second-elect and the only other runner at single figures behind the commanding $1.20 favourite. The daughter of Savabeel (Zabeel) finished third to Well Written in the New Zealand 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) before returning from a let-up to claim the Almanzor Trophy (Gr 3, 1200m) and Uncle Remus Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) in impressive fashion. Her pedigree adds further weight to her NZB Kiwi claims, being a half-sister to triple Australian Group 1 winner The Bostonian (Jimmy Choux) and closely related to Hall of Famer Mufhasa (Pentire). Archer, who races the filly alongside partner Diane Wright and their children, said his long experience at the elite level has taught him that even champions can be vulnerable on their day. “A horse race is a horse race and you never know what might happen,” he said. “We were so fortunate to race two wonderful horses in Mufhasa and The Bostonian, but things didn’t always go their way.” While acknowledging the size of the task, Archer believes Belle Cheval is peaking at the right time. “If everything works in our favour, we’ve got a stunning filly in the right form and she’s shown she’s got gears,” he said. “We’ll go there with a smile on our faces.”

Well Written's connections savouring golden run

Unbeaten star Well Written may race in the colours of Yulong, but she carries the hopes of a far broader ownership group into Saturday’s $4 million NZB The Kiwi at Ellerslie. The Group 1-winning daughter of Written Tycoon (Iglesia) boasts 16 individual ownership interests, with Yulong holding the controlling share after buying into the filly following her Soliloquy Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) win last spring. Since then, the Stephen Marsh-trained three-year-old has extended her unblemished record to five, adding the New Zealand 1,000 Guineas, Auckland Guineas (Gr 2, 1400m) and $1.5 million Karaka Millions 3YO (RL, 1600m) to her résumé. Among those enjoying the ride is Greg Pope of the 8 Mates Syndicate, who secured a share as a yearling. A lifelong racing enthusiast and recently retired equine airfreight executive, Pope says the experience has been about camaraderie as much as success. “There is a large ownership group with a lot of friends, and we’ve made a lot of new friends along the way,” he said. “We’re not in it for the money. It’s about going to the races with mates and having some fun.” The syndicate will be out in force at Ellerslie on Saturday, buoyed by the journey so far and hopeful Well Written can continue her perfect run on what is fast becoming New Zealand’s premier raceday.

HK: Hewitson hopes Storming Dragon can power home at Happy Valley

Lyle Hewitson is banking on a genuine tempo to bring fast-finisher Storming Dragon (Star Turn) into contention when the Jamie Richards-trained gelding contests Wednesday night’s Class 3 New Lantao Bus Handicap (1200m) at Happy Valley. With noted on-pace runners all drawn to roll forward, the race shapes as a true-run affair – conditions Hewitson believes will suit the five-year-old, who drops to a rating of 62. “I’ve only ridden him over 1650 metres but his best form has been at 1200 metres. He seems to relish the speed and hit the line strongly,” Hewitson said. “There’s a lot in his favour and he’s drawn well.” Richards, who recently passed 100 Hong Kong wins, will saddle four runners on the card, while Hewitson has a busy book of eight rides. He also partners Hey Bros (Brave Smash) for Brett Crawford in the Class 3 Kwoon Chung Bus Cup (1200m), with the Australian import having caught the eye when fifth on local debut. In the opener, Hewitson reunites with Dragon Sunrise (Frosted) for Francis Lui after the American-bred’s improved effort last start. Elsewhere, Silvery Breeze (Dundeel), trained by David Eustace and ridden by Hugh Bowman, headlines the Class 3 Sichuan Bipenggou Tourist Attractions Handicap (1650m) as he seeks another win in a competitive nine-race program.

ITY: Dewhurst winner and former Widden shuttler Mujahid dies aged 30

Dewhurst winner Mujahid has died at Allevamento di Besnate in Italy at the age of 30, Shadwell announced on Tuesday. A homebred for Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum, the son of Danzig (Northern Dancer) was trained by John Dunlop and crowned champion European two-year-old after defeating Stravinsky (Nureyev) in the Dewhurst. He later finished third in the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket (Gr 1, 1m). Mujahid began his stud career at Shadwell’s Beech House Stud, shuttling to Widden Stud in Australia before relocating to Italy, where he became a seven-time champion sire. Among his best performers was Australian multiple Group 1 winner Danleigh, successful in the George Ryder (Gr 1, 1500m) and Chipping Norton Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m), while Cleo Fan struck at the highest level in Italy. Other notable progeny included Balius and Starlarks. “He became a big gain for Italy,” Allevamento di Besnate's Paolo Crespi said. “He’s also a very, very good broodmare sire and did very well in Australia in the few years he shuttled. His horses could run forever, every second week, and if you had a racehorse by Mujahid you would never be let down.”

UK: Lord Allen quits as BHA chair after just six months in the role

British Horseracing Authority (BHA) chair Lord Charles Allen has resigned after just six months in the role, plunging British racing into a fresh governance crisis. The BHA confirmed Allen’s departure on Tuesday after its members failed to reach agreement on proposed reforms that would have introduced an independent board with a stronger commercial mandate. His exit follows weeks of mounting speculation amid a protracted stalemate between the governing body, racecourses and participant groups. Allen, appointed in November 2024 and widely hailed as a candidate of “outstanding calibre,” had pushed for structural change, including board independence from shareholder bodies. However, tensions escalated over proposals relating to future raceday data rights beyond 2028, an area fiercely defended by racecourses. The impasse deepened when participant bodies indicated they would not support governance reform if concessions were made to courses, while tracks resisted signing off on change without movement on data rights. Allen is understood to have ultimately relented on the issue, prompting further unrest. In the wake of his resignation, The Jockey Club, along with Ascot, Goodwood, Newbury and York, called for an urgent review of Racecourse Association governance, seeking reforms to ensure balanced representation and more decisive industry leadership.
