Ahead of a huge Saturday which is headlined by Stefi Magnetica’s (All Too Hard) bold bid to land her third Group 1 race in the All-Star Mile (1600m), trainer Bjorn Baker teamed up with Clarke Bloodstock to replenish his stable stock with five Inglis Premier Yearling Sale fillies which may become their next racetrack stars.

The Oaklands Junction shopping spree cost the duo a combined $1.25 million - their Street Boss (Street Cry) filly from the Two Bays Farm draft topped the quintet at $340,000 - but with up to a dozen stakes runners in action across Randwick and Flemington this Saturday, Baker could conceivably recover a large chunk of that outlay in one fell swoop.

What's On

With her victories in both the Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m) and the Doncaster Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) - not to mention the rather tidy sum of $7 million in prize-money on her CV - Stefi Magnetica has been one of the major players in Baker’s rapid rise since the New Zealand native cut training ties with his famous father Murray to go it alone.

The $140,000 Jim Clarke and Cunningham Thoroughbreds paid for Lot 256 at the 2022 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale represents outstanding business, and in many ways that canny purchase has paved the way for the success Baker has since enjoyed in partnership with his trusted bloodstock agent and the Cunningham family.

After coming through her final pre-race gallop at Cranbourne on Tuesday morning in fine fettle, ‘Stefi’ will be kept ticking over ahead of her $2 million assignment on ‘Super Saturday’ at Flemington, where she will be joined by up to five stablemates including Newmarket Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) contenders Caballus (I Am Invincible) and Disneck (Trapeze Artist).

In a quality renewal of the All-Star Mile which could feature nine Group 1 winners, the five-year-old mare will be partnered for the first time by Hugh Bowman who bids for a second success in the race following his 2021 victory aboard Mugatoo (Henrythenavigator).

Before embarking on his riding stint in Hong Kong, Bowman forged a fruitful association with the Baker boys with his victory in the Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) aboard Lion Tamer (Storming Home) – one of several stakes successes for the family.

Having registered two wins and a pair of placings from his six rides on Hong Kong Gold Cup Day at Sha Tin last Sunday, Baker believes Bowman should be in a confident mood ahead of the champion jockey’s return to Australia for the first time since last year’s Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m).

It’s great to have Hughie riding Stefi on Saturday, it gives you a bit more confidence when you have a big race rider like him on one of your horses in a Group 1

BJORN BAKER

Trainer

“It’s great to have Hughie riding Stefi on Saturday, it gives you a bit more confidence when you have a big race rider like him on one of your horses in a Group 1,” Baker told ANZ News.

“He hasn’t ridden for us for a while but we’ve had a lot of previous success together, so hopefully that can continue on Saturday. We’re really happy with how Stefi has settled in down in Melbourne. I thought her first-up run in the Apollo Stakes was pretty good and she came through it well, so it’s all systems go for Saturday.

“Autumn Glory and Aeliana were too good for her that day in the Apollo, but they’re both quality mares and we probably got a bit further back in the run than we anticipated from the outside gate. But Stefi is a big-time performer and we think three weeks between runs is probably ideal at this stage of her career.

“We always knew Autumn Glow was going to be mighty hard to beat in the Verry Elleegant Stakes, and although the All-Star Mile is by no means an easy race to win we did probably think we were a better chance in it. She’s run very well at Flemington a few times without winning, but with a bit of luck and a decent barrier draw hopefully we’re fighting out the finish this time.

“It’s more than likely that it will be a hit-and-run mission and she’ll travel back to Sydney after the All-Star Mile, but we’ll make that decision with the ownership group at the start of next week.”

In the other feature race on the program, lightweight rider Winona Costin will bid to make her elite-level breakthrough aboard Disneck but Baker has been frantically scrambling to find a replacement rider for Caballus after the five-year-old was assigned 55 kilograms in the Newmarket Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m).

His intended pilot Bowman is unable to make that weight, but the ‘boy from Dunedoo’ is set to partner Pillow Fight (Zoustar) in the Kewney Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) for Baker and the Cunninghams, who like the Warwick Farm trainer will have an embarrassment of riches on display across two states.

With smart juvenile Paradoxium (Extreme Choice) and exciting filly Horseshoe Hill (All Too Hard) carrying the Cunningham colours at Randwick, in the Todman Stakes (Gr 2 1200m) and Fireball Stakes (Listed, 1100m) respectively, the family may need to divide between Melbourne and Sydney in the hope of conquering one of the great racedays on the autumn calendar.

A nasty dose of man flu will almost certainly rule Baker out from boarding a flight to Melbourne, but no doubt wife Andrea will have her camera phone trained on her husband in Sydney on Randwick Guineas Day in the hope of capturing another viral video.

“I’m feeling pretty crook at the minute so I’ll probably have to stay up here in Sydney on Saturday, but we’ve got a big team heading to Melbourne on Saturday so we’ll be watching on with great interest,” Baker told ANZ News.

“The Newmarket Handicap is always a great race and the favourite [Tentyris] will be very hard to beat if he goes there, but I do think our two are in with a chance of causing an upset. Caballus was great first-up behind Joliestar in the Expressway and he drops in the weights, so the handicap conditions should suit him.

“Disneck was the victim of a slowly run race last time in the JRA Plate, but his win two starts back down the Flemington straight in the Standish was very impressive. He won’t know himself with only 52 kilos on his back, he will probably settle in the second half of the fields as usual but with the lightweight he could be running over the top of them late on.

“Pillow Fight is rock hard fit and has been running really consistently, it’s a step up in grade for her but if we can get a black type win or even a placing on her page, that would be a great result for connections. It’s going to be a big day for the Cunningham family, hopefully we can get at least one win on the board for them so that they can celebrate on Saturday night.”

The extent of the Cunninghams’ celebrations will largely depend on Stefi’s ability to overcome her fellow Group 1 heroines Pride Of Jenni (Pride Of Dubai) and Treasurethemoment (Alabama Express), and Baker believes the latter mare may prove the hardest to beat in the All-Star Mile.

Indeed, the early success her Yulong-based sire has enjoyed with the fairer sex was one of the reasons why the Warwick Farm horseman partnered with Clarke at the Premier Sale to purchase Lot 371, the fourth foal produced by the Savabeel (Zabeel) mare Storytime. Illness prevented Baker from making it to the sale, so delegated duties to Clarke and the respected judge certainly liked what he saw with this filly.

“Alabama Express is going particularly well and to me this filly had the looks of a classic type,” Clarke told ANZ News.

“She has the build of a mile or mile and a quarter filly, there’s a bit of stamina on her page and it’s a family I know well after I bought Quintessa out of it. Savabeel is doing really well as a broodmare sire, so she stood out to us with a nice middle distance profile. We haven’t bought many fillies like her this sales season, so I’m pleased we were able to add her to our arsenal in that division.”

The pair also came home with two fillies by Darley’s established sire Street Boss, and the strategy to target his progeny was in part influenced by the tremendous success Baker has enjoyed ever since his powerful son Pericles entered the stables.

Pericles surged home in the Futurity Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Caulfield last month to enhance his record to two stakes wins and a pair of Group 1 placings from his five starts for Baker, who is now an ardent admirer of the stallion.

Lots 246 and 436 came at a combined cost of $600,000 but, given the current trajectory their father is currently on, Clarke is confident both fillies will more than justify their price tags in time.

“Street Boss is flying with arguably Australia’s two best sprinters Tentyris and Tempted, but Bjorn probably has a new-found appreciation for the stallion after what Pericles has been able to do,” said Clarke.

“Street Boss is getting it done across a wide range of distances and ages, and with both his colts and fillies. So he’s the complete package and we were really keen to buy some of his stock.

“The Two Bays filly we bought comes from a very good farm, and the dam is the half-sister to Lady Laguna so she’s got a lovely pedigree to match. She caught our eye early on and paraded well each time we got her out. The other Street Boss filly from Mill Park also comes from a very good nursery, so we were keen to get her and I’m very glad that we did.”

Morning Briefing

Australia

Two for Tiger Of Malay

Tiger Of Malay (Credit: Newgate)

The Stuart Gandy-trained Momentslikethese (2 f ex Mintha by Redoute's Choice) provided Newgate Farm’s first-season sire Tiger Of Malay (Extreme Choice) with his second individual winner when he got off the mark at the fifth attempt at Launceston on Wednesday. Ridden by Craig Newitt and sent off the long odds-on favourite having finished runner-up in Listed contests on her last two outings, the filly defeated All Intrique (Tough Speed) by a comfortable 3.5 lengths. There was a further 1.8 lengths back to Bewicked (Headwater) in third place. Out of the Group 3-placed winning Redoute’s Choice (Danehill) mare Mintha, Momentslikethese is a half-sister to winner Barrelling (Toronado). Tiger Of Malay stood the 2025 breeding season at an unchanged fee of $11,000 (inc GST).

Pride confident Attica can challenge in Randwick Guineas

Joe Pride believes the market has misread Saturday’s Randwick Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m), insisting the race shapes as a two-horse battle between his Group 1 winner Attica (Lonhro) and Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) hero Autumn Boy (The Autumn Sun). The pair resumed in the Hobartville Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) where both settled near the rear before producing similar late efforts. Autumn Boy charged down the outside to finish second behind Ninja (Farnan), while Attica worked home along the inside to finish fourth. However, after Attica drew the outside barrier when acceptances were declared on Wednesday, bookmakers eased the Godolphin colt to $10, while the Chris Waller-trained Autumn Boy tightened to $2.50 favouritism, marginally ahead of Sheza Alibi (Saxon Warrior) at $2.60. “I can't line Peter Moody's filly [Sheza Alibi] up, and that's not to say she's not a chance. I'm just struggling to line her up,” Pride said. “But I would have thought Autumn Boy or Attica would be winning the Randwick Guineas. I think my boy will, but I'm not going to take Chris' horse for granted because he is a good colt.” Attica is already proven over the Randwick mile, having claimed the Dulcify Stakes (Listed, 1600m) over the Guineas course and distance before going on to secure the Spring Champion Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) during the spring. “It has all gone exactly to the script I have wanted it to, and generally when you look back and you've won a Group 1, you look back at the preparation and go, 'well it just all went to plan, didn't it',” Pride said. “We're not there yet, but that's the way it has felt this preparation. Every step of the way he has met the markers I have wanted him to be at, and that makes his job easier because it's uninterrupted.”

Moody bullish on Sheza Alibi’s Guineas chance

Peter Moody is confident that his improving filly Sheza Alibi has a big chance in Saturday's Randwick Guineas. The daughter of Saxon Warrior (Deep Impact) has landed Group contests on her last three starts, taking The Vanity (Gr 3, 1400m) at Flemington before taking out the Sandown Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m) and Angus Armanasco Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Caulfield. Moody, who trains in partnership with Katherine Coleman, has only had the filly for her last four outings and feels she can again run Autumn Boy close - having finished second to the colt in the Tattersall's Stakes (Listed, 1400m) on her final start for former trainer Kris Hansen. “She’s a Group 2 and 3 winner so this is the next step for her,’’ Moody told Racing NSW. “She’s a bloody nice filly with good ability, I don’t think there’s any secret. We could have waited a week for the Coolmore but we’ve got a small field and it’s a class line up. She’s raced Autumn Boy before and had no luck and ran second to him. If he’s the benchmark we feel we can certainly be competitive. In the time I’ve had her she’s kept physically developing, obviously I didn’t have her at the start. The blinkers made a massive difference, the only time she was beaten was by Tentyris at 1200 metres and I think if I’d had the blinkers on that day it may have been a different result.”

Napoleonic one of a trio taking on elders in Canterbury

Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj) colt Napoleonic will be one of a trio of three-year-olds taking on their elders in the Canterbury Stakes (Gr 1, 1300m) at Randwick on Saturday. No three-year-old has won the Canterbury since Holler (Commands) a decade ago, but co-trainer Tom Charlton believes Napoleonic is well prepared to give it a good crack after running second in both the Eskimo Prince Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) and Hobartville Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m). "That should leave him in good stead this weekend," Charlton, who trains in partnership with John O'Shea, said. "He's got good form, he comes into this third-up and, we feel, ready to run the best race of his preparation, which should put him right among the chances. We always had this race day as a plan, and we were just going to work out whether it was Randwick Guineas or Canterbury Stakes. His last run was excellent, but we concluded the best option would be coming back to the 1300 [metres], rather than try to stretch him to a Randwick mile." The training partners will also have Scintillation (I Am Invincible) running in the Ottawa Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m) at Flemington on the same day. "She's going to run in Melbourne. Just the draw was a bit tricky in Sydney on Saturday," Charlton said. "She did a good job on debut. She's a nice, racy filly and hopefully we can get some black type."

Stretan Ruler on Todman path

Phillip Stokes is under no illusions about the task ahead with talented colt Stretan Ruler (Wild Ruler), but the Pakenham trainer believes the son of Wild Ruler (Snitzel) is on the right path to give Victoria a rare victory in the Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m). Stretan Ruler will continue his preparation for the Golden Slipper when he contests Saturday’s Todman Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Randwick, having stamped himself a leading contender with a dominant victory in the Silver Slipper (Gr 2, 1100m). Despite that performance, the colt still sits behind several Sydney-trained rivals in Golden Slipper betting, something Stokes believes reflects the historical difficulty for Victorian-trained juveniles in the race. “I'm tipping it's because we're not a Sydney trainer,” he said. “A Melbourne horse hasn't won it for a long time, that's how hard it is to do, but we've given the horse every chance by getting up there early. Chad Schofield came out and galloped him on Saturday at Rosehill and he was really happy with him. We couldn't be happier with the horse.” Stretan Ruler is aiming to become the first Victorian-trained winner of the Golden Slipper since Crystal Lily (Stratum), prepared by Mat Ellerton and Simon Zahra, in 2010. Stokes opted to bypass the Blue Diamond (Gr 1, 1200m) and instead head to Sydney for the Silver Slipper on February 21, a move that paid immediate dividends. “I'm pleased we didn't go to the Blue Diamond because he then had plenty of time to get up there and get used to going that way around, because he hadn't been that way around before he went to the races,” Stokes said. “He's going to take a lot of natural improvement out of that.” Stretan Ruler has drawn barrier four in the Todman Stakes.

Caffe Florian out to make it four on the bounce in Fireball

The Richard Litt-trained Caffe Florian (Snitzel) will bid to make it four wins from five starts when she tackles Saturday's Fireball Stakes (Listed, 1100m) at Randwick. The three-year-old is half-sister to stakes winners Anders (Not A Single Doubt) and Ostraka (Pariah) and is already a Listed winner herself after landing the Gosford Guineas (Listed, 1200m) when last sighted on December 28. Litt has set out a program for Caffe Florian that will include the Darby Munro Stakes (Listed, 1200m) on Golden Slipper Day then into the Arrowfield 3YO Sprint (Gr 2, 1200m) on Day 2 of The Championships at Randwick. “She had a short turnaround with a few weeks in the paddock,’’ Litt told Racing NSW. “She’s come back and done very well, she’s had that one very quiet trial. She seems to be progressing in the right way, she’s come back a little bit different again. A little bit stronger, a little more content, a bit more relaxed. By all means she’s definitely not screwed down to 110 per cent fitness for this first run, our grand final is the Arrowfield Sprint.”

War Machine primed for Newmarket return

Lindsay Park will chase a first Newmarket Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) success in seven years when War Machine (Harry Angel) lines up amongst a field of 15 in Saturday’s sprint down Flemington’s famous straight six. Lindsay Park last captured the race when Redkirk Warrior (Notnowcato) went back-to-back in 2017 and 2018, when the stable was operated by David and Ben Hayes alongside Tom Dabernig. Saturday’s attempt comes under the current Hayes brothers training partnership. War Machine will jump from barrier 11 with Jamie Mott returning to the saddle. The rider partnered the gelding when he won first-up for Lindsay Park at Caulfield in May before he headed north to claim the BRC Sprint (Gr 3, 1350m) under Blake Shinn and the Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m) for Tim Clark. The sprinter has not raced since finishing third as a $1.30 favourite in the Australia Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Pakenham on January 23 but has since completed two jump-outs, including a third placing behind Wodeton (Wootton Bassett) at Flemington last Friday. Ben Hayes said the team had been pleased with the gelding’s progression since being freshened following the Pakenham run. “He's spot on and will bounce back,” Hayes said. “We were really happy with his jump-out and I thought he was great through the line. “He didn't handle the night meeting, and it was a very firm track that night and he jarred up, but he seems right back on track now.”

Pride Of Jenni chasing All-Star Mile history

Pride Of Jenni (Credit: Sportpix)

A total of 18 months after her racing career appeared over, Pride Of Jenni (Pride Of Dubai) will attempt to create history when she lines up in Saturday’s All-Star Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) at Flemington. The now eight-year-old mare was retired following a bleeding attack when finishing last in the Champions Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) at Flemington in November 2024, prompting owner Tony Ottobre to call time on her career. However, Pride Of Jenni returned the following March with a first-up victory over 1800 metres and went on to add another three wins through 2025, including a second triumph in the Empire Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m). Ciaron Maher said the mare had thrived ahead of her latest return as she attempts to become the first horse to win the All-Star Mile twice. “I'm rapt with the way she has progressed through the prep,” Maher said. “Tony [Ottobre] kept her active when she was down at his property and she came here in really good order and she will strip pretty close to her ideal race weight. She's amazing how evergreen she is. Her endeavour, her action, her whole demeanour. Dec [Bates] sat on her on Monday and said she wanted to rip from the 600 metres. He doesn't say a lot, but when he's saying that you know you're pretty close to the mark.” Maher said he was confident Pride Of Jenni could run well first-up, noting her recent preparations had been geared towards resuming over distances of 1600 metres and beyond. “She's unbelievable,” Maher said. “Even what she did in the spring. She continues to surprise with her longevity, her endeavour, her will that she has. The team have done a super job with her and continue to do that, and Tony and his team need to take a fair bit of credit as well. She seems as good as ever.”

On Display takes in Caulfield gallop ahead of Group 3

Last-start Group 1 placegetter On Display (Fastnet Rock) took in a gallop at Caulfield Heath on Wednesday ahead of her return at Flemington this weekend. The Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained mare was last seen running third in the Empire Rose Stakes behind superstar Pride Of Jenni and will tackle the Shaftesbury Avenue Handicap (Gr 3, 1400m) on Saturday. "I would gallop, at home, on a Wednesday, no trouble, but she has plenty of condition on her and after that she should be pretty right for Saturday," Price said. "She came into us and has been there at Cranbourne the whole time, and there was the opportunity to stimulate her, and adrenalise her, by bringing her here which was fantastic. It just sparks her ahead of Saturday and it was exactly what I wanted, along with a gallop on a beautiful surface." Seamus Mills, who is a major shareholder in On Display, revealed plans are to run the four-year-old in the Sunline Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) at Caulfield on March 21 before then heading to the Anniversary Vase (Listed, 1600m) at Caulfield on April 11. "If she wins the Sunline, she may get weighted out of her next start, the Anniversary Vase at Caulfield, a Listed race against the boys," Mills said. "Then the plan is to go back to Adelaide for the race she should have won last year, the Group 2 Queen Of The South Stakes [on April 25]. But if she wins the Sunline, then we'll probably have to readjust that program."

She’s Extra eyes Magic Night after Warwick Farm win

Promising Newcastle filly She’s Extra (Exceedance) kept her unbeaten record intact with an impressive victory at Warwick Farm on Wednesday, though the Golden Slipper may come too soon in her preparation. The daughter of Exceedance (Exceed And Excel) backed up a four-length debut win at Newcastle on February 14 with a dominant 3.2-length victory in the All Too Hard @ Vinery Stud Handicap (1100m). Danny Greer, representing trainer Kris Lees, said the stable would consider a start in the Magic Night Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Rosehill next Saturday provided the filly came through the run well. “There is a two-year-old fillies' race next Saturday. Should she come through this well, which hopefully she does, we will nominate for that,” Greer said. “We will take our path from there. She might even be a Percy Sykes type of horse, but Kris will map a plan.” While the Golden Slipper follows a week later, the Percy Sykes Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Randwick on April 11 shapes as a more likely long-term target. Greer said the filly had always shown ability and had handled the step from provincial to metropolitan company with ease. “It's not easy to do for any horse, especially to go from a provincial race to a metro race,” he said. “She has done it in good style, and she paraded really well today. She is a very professional type.”

Just Maz remains unbeaten

Just Maz, a daughter of Justify (Scat Daddy) and Listed winner Marianne (Darci Brahma), kept her unbeaten record intact when she landed a 1300-metre contest at Warwick Farm on Wednesday. Trained by Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou, the three-year-old filly added a second win to her record with a 0.8-length win over Kitty Okay (Ole Kirk). Purchased by her trainers from the draft of Coolmore at the Inglis Easter yearling sale for $800,000, Just Maz is the third winner from three for Marianne. Just Maz’s sister will sell through Coolmore’s draft as Lot 418 at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale which begins its two-day run on March 29.

Hatch to rejoin Gollan Racing as Gold Coast assistant trainer

Lindsay Hatch will rejoin Gollan Racing to oversee the stable’s Gold Coast base after being appointed assistant trainer as part of plans to expand the operation. Hatch, who has trained horses to nearly $13 million in prize-money at a career strike-rate of 16.5 per cent, will reunite with the stable alongside wife Tracey, who will take up an administration role. Tony Gollan said the appointment would strengthen the stable’s presence on the Gold Coast and support its growing number of horses. “We are thrilled to have secured the services of Lindsay Hatch and believe his appointment will contribute to the continued growth of the stable,” Gollan said. “First and foremost, it enhances our ability to race more horses directly out of the Gold Coast stable. Lindsay is also great in the education and preparation of young horses which is important given the number of yearlings we purchase each year. His training ability is without question, and he comes to the stable as a lifelong family friend. Lindsay also brings with him the ability to mentor apprentice jockeys, and we see this as another great benefit to the stable moving forward.” Hatch and Tracey are set to commence their roles with the stable this month.

Zahra rides winner on comeback

Mark Zahra took no time at all to return to the winner's circle on his first day back in the saddle at Caulfield Heath on Wednesday. The dual Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m)-winning jockey steered home the Lloyd Kennewell-trained Loud Charlie (Prague) to victory in the Victorian Wakeful Club Celebrates Linda Meech over 1500 metres. Zahra had been out of competitive action since January 14 due to a leg injury that he sustained at the Sandown trials. “I’m fit as a fiddle, don’t worry about me, I’m all good!” Zahra told Racing.com. “It’s been full on [the recovery]. Pretty much from the minute I broke it, I started rehab straight away. It’s good to be rewarded on the first ride back.” Zahra will be back aboard Tentyris (Street Boss) on Saturday when the three-year-old lines up in the Newmarket Handicap at Flemington. “There were a few of them that were winning, it’s been a tough place, my couch, the last few Saturdays!” Zahra said. “It was good to have that motivation, I’ve been on him [Tentyris] during the week, he’s flying, so I’m really looking forward to it.”

New Zealand

Freedman unfazed by wide draw for Asakura in NZB The Kiwi

Mitch Freedman remains upbeat about Asakura’s (Churchill) chances in Saturday’s $4 million NZB The Kiwi (Listed, 1500m) at Ellerslie despite Hallmark Stud principal Mark Baker drawing the outside barrier at Tuesday night’s draw at Karaka. “We will cross out Hallmark Stud going forward,” Freedman quipped. “You can’t do anything about those barrier draws. He has got gate speed and a little bit of versatility for a lightly raced horse. We will just work through some options there and communicate with Dean [Yendall, jockey] about what we think is the best way of tackling it.” Asakura will be the only Australian runner in the race and heads to New Zealand in strong form after finishing runner-up in the CS Hayes Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) at Flemington last month, having won his previous two starts. “The horse is in great shape,” Freedman said. “I think he was still coming to his top going to the CS Hayes, so we thought there was a bit of improvement to come. We think he has taken some improvement and we are looking forward to getting over there and testing him out. I haven’t raced a horse over there, so I am looking forward to that as well.”

Dwyer to launch Ellerslie raid

Ballarat trainer Henry Dwyer will target Champions’ Day at Ellerslie on Saturday with a two-pronged attack, sending imports Paradise Storm (Masked Marvel) and Cote Atlantique (Kodiac) across the Tasman. Paradise Storm will tackle the Auckland Cup (Gr 2, 3200m) while Cote Atlantique heads to the King’s Plate (Gr 3, 1200m), with the pair scheduled to arrive in New Zealand on Thursday. “We were going to go to the Adelaide Cup with Paradise Storm and we pivoted a bit when we saw the prize-money over there [at Ellerslie],” Dwyer said. “It’s easy enough to get over and when we decided to send one, we decided we might as well send two.” The five-year-old was last seen finishing seventh over 2500 metres at Flemington. “He ran pretty well at Flemington last time in a leader dominated race and with the slow tempo he got home well late,” Dwyer said. “Obviously, the extra 700 metres will suit him and it looks a good race for him. He can get a little keen, so we’d want tempo in the race and we’ll take the blinkers off him stepping up in trip.” Joe Doyle will ride Paradise Storm, while Dean Yendall partners Cote Atlantique, who was a dual stakes winner in Ireland and France before adding the Seymour Cup (Listed, 1600m) in Australia. “Dean is coming over to ride Mitch Freedman’s horse [Asakura] in The Kiwi so we’re happy to have him,” Dwyer said. Cote Atlantique resumes after finishing third in the Sale Cup (Listed, 1600m) in the spring and winning a recent Ballarat trial. “He will be first-up and was going to go for a race in Sydney this weekend, but again it’s just as easy to go to New Zealand,” Dwyer said. “He’s probably a mile to 1800-metre horse, but he’s nice and fresh and can run a race over six furlongs.”

Downey seeking home glory at Ellerslie

Gareth Downey will be busy at Flemington this Saturday in his role as Lindsay Park’s chief executive, but the expat Kiwi will be keeping a close eye on Champions Day at Ellerslie where his mare Chica Mojito (Zacinto) will line-up in the Dubai Classic (Gr 2, 1400m). Bred by Downey and his wife Mel Gamble, Chica Mojito is out of three-win Cecconi (Encosta De Lago) mare Cantina and by Zacinto (Dansili), who stood at Valachi Downs when the Matamata farm was managed by Downey. She showed plenty of promise when trained in New Zealand by Ben and Ryan Foote, placing in the Eulogy Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m), and has been a model of consistency under the care of Chris Waller, placing in a further ten races before winning last start at Wyong in the A$500,000 Lakes Mile (1600m) in January. Waller won the Dubai Classic last year, when known as the Westbury Classic, with Konasana (Dundeel), and he will be out to defend his crown with Chica Mojito and stablemate Mare Of Mt Buller (Dundeel). Chica Mojito has drawn favourably in three and Downey is hoping she can live up to her billing as equal favourite, alongside Tomodachi (Tarzino), at $3.40. “It is a very nice field, as you would expect,” Downey said. “She is definitely in with a chance. Chris won the race last year, so he knows the kind of horse to take over there, and he looks like he has picked two nice options and hopefully for us she is the right option. She is usually a bit slow away from the gates, so the draw perhaps doesn’t quite matter so much, but the dream draw would have been three, so when that popped up this morning it looked perfect.”

Willydoit to return to Clotworthy stable

Last season’s New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Willydoit (Tarzino) will return to the care of trainers Shaun and Emma Clotworthy after a brief stint in Australia. The gelding was a standout three-year-old for the Matamata trainers, winning four of his six starts including the New Zealand Derby, before MyRacehorse Australia purchased a 50 per cent share mid-season, with the Clotworthys and Bryan Black retaining the remainder. Willydoit subsequently crossed the Tasman, finishing fourth in the Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m), before joining Ciaron Maher. After five unplaced runs in Australia, connections elected to send the gelding back to New Zealand following his last-place finish in the Blamey Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) at Flemington last Saturday. “I was talking with Ben [Willis] from MyRacehorse Australia after his last run in the Blamey Stakes,” Shaun Clotworthy said. “He just hasn’t come up this time, which often four-year-olds don’t come up after their three-year-old year. Ciaron has done a great job with him over there and he has really matured into a professional horse in their big operation. We decided to step back a little bit and bring him back to New Zealand and give him some lush grass and look after him for three or four months and then we will reassess after that.”

Fownes tightens title grip as Whyte ends drought with Happy Valley double

Caspar Fownes tightened his grip on the trainers’ championship and Douglas Whyte ended his barren spell on a rain-affected night of action at Happy Valley on Wednesday.

Luke Ferraris and Zac Purton shared riding honours with three wins each.

Fownes and Ferraris combined as Toronado (High Chaparral) gelding Verbier made the most of a well-timed ride by the South African, and drove through a gap between the leading pair to claim the Class 5 Intercontinental Limousine Handicap (1200m) by half-a-length.

Super Sicario (Tivaci) netted his first win since the opening Happy Valley meeting of the season under Hugh Bowman in the Class 5 Kwoon Chung Motors Handicap (1800m) for trainers’ championship leader Fownes, who moved to 39 wins for the season.

“We gave him a nice break away and prepared him well for this,” Fownes said of Super Sicario.

“Hugh handled him well, and he’s won nicely. He started off a bit intractable, but once the race started to progress, he was good. Once he passed the second bend, I was very confident.”

Whyte put a firm end to a frustrating run, which had stretched to 62 days, with an emphatic quickfire double. Firstly, Brazilian-bred Gameplayer Elite (Kentuckian) finished strongly to claim a first Hong Kong win partnered by Harry Bentley in the Class 4 KC Smart Mobility Handicap (1200m), before Purton bagged a brace for the handler when he prevailed aboard Hong Kong International Sale graduate Giant Ballon (Mehmas) in the Class 4 Kwoon Chung Macau Limousine Rental Services Handicap (1200m).

"He’s been running consistently in his last two starts,” Whyte said of Gameplayer Elite. “It’s been a bit of a frustrating run of things with him. Tonight, the draw and the tempo played into his hands, and he ran a nice race. I think he’s just a healthy horse and his rating, the draw and the ground played a big part.

“It’s taken a long time to turn things around, but the horses have been running very consistently. Two of the horses put their ‘A’ game together tonight and both won very well.”

Frankie Lor continued a strong spell with his latest winner when Symbol Of Strength (Kodiac) battled gamely to hit the line ahead of Flying Wrote (Wrote) in the Class 3 Kwoon Chung Bus Cup Handicap (1200m). The victory provided Ferraris with his second win of the night and Symbol Of Strength’s owners with a PP Bonus of HK$1.5 million (approx. AU$271,450).

Ferraris completed the treble with his 25th victory of the season, leapfrogging Karis Teetan and Vincent Ho into fifth place in the jockeys’ standings, when Fivefortwo (Time Test) claimed the Class 3 Sichuan Bipenggou Tourist Attractions Handicap (1650m) for trainer Francis Lui. The four-year-old Irish import also sealed a HK$1.5 million PP Bonus for his owners.

Standby starter Ace War (Phoenix Of Spain) secured a maiden Hong Kong win on his first run for Mark Newnham’s yard in the Class 4 Trans-Island Chinalink Handicap (2200m). Champion jockey Purton was in the saddle as the Irish-bred import made the most of his late call-up to run on comfortably.

“When they extended the entries, we added him and he looked like he’d be lucky enough to get in, and he got conditions to suit,” said Newnham, who moved level with David Hayes on 36 wins in second on the trainers’ ladder.

“He had run over 2000 metres in the UK on soft ground, so any rain we got today was going to be helpful.”

Purton sealed his hat-trick courtesy of a beautifully timed effort, producing the Tony Cruz-trained California Moxie (Mehmas) for an electrifying finish in the Class 4 Kwoon Chung Inclusive & Accessible Service Handicap (1650m).

“On his last start he just walked out of the gate, so I told Zac just to get that start and wait – Zac timed it to perfection,” Cruz said.

“Today was very different ground but I was sure he could handle it; I think on faster ground he would have been even better.”

Amazing Kid (Exceed And Excel) continued his winning form after a difficult introduction to Class 3 in February, as he swept forward late on to seal the Class 3 New Lantao Bus Handicap (1200m) for trainer John Size and Andrea Atzeni. It was the Exceed And Excel (Danehill) gelding’s fourth win in five outings.

Hong Kong racing continues at Sha Tin on Sunday.
