Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman’s rising star Sheza Alibi (Saxon Warrior) will attempt to defy recent history when she lines up in Saturday’s Randwick Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m), where the progressive filly will take on the boys at the elite level.

The filly is the result of a modest mating that proved remarkably successful for long-time Queensland hobby breeders Fred and Desley Monsour. Acting on the advice of Verna Metcalfe, the couple sent their mare Sheza Gypsy (Shaft) to Japanese-bred shuttle stallion Saxon Warrior (Deep Impact), who stood his third season at Coolmore in 2021 for a fee of $13,750.

What's On

Saxon Warrior struggled to gain traction with Australian breeders and has produced only two stakes winners from four southern hemisphere crops, Sheza Alibi and New Zealand Listed winner Archaic Smile.

Sold as a $10,000 weanling on Inglis Digital to central Queensland-based owner Fred Noffke, the filly quickly began to show promise on the racetrack. After beginning her career in Rockhampton with Kris Hansen, she captured the QTIS 2YO Classic (1200m) in Townsville on her third start before finishing second in the Tattersall’s Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at Eagle Farm behind subsequent Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner and Saturday’s opponent Autumn Boy (The Autumn Sun).

Transferred to Moody and Coleman after winning two of her four starts for Hansen, Sheza Alibi has continued her rapid rise through the ranks, adding victories in the Vanity (Gr 3, 1400m) at Flemington and the Sandown Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m). She now sits as a $2.50 favourite as she prepares for her first attempt at Group 1 level.

“We thought we had a stakes-quality filly and she had that form around Autumn Boy, who looked quite smart at the time,” Moody told ANZ News.

“She ran second to him and didn't have a lot of luck in that race on Tattersalls Day in Queensland, she got caught wide and crowded, and that was the form line that probably suggested to us that she was going to certainly be good enough to have a crack at Saturday Melbourne class and probably three-year-old stakes company. But she's just continued to improve physically all the way through, and I think that's led to race performance improvement as well.”

Following her Sandown Guineas triumph, Sheza Alibi was sent for a spell and resumed on February 21 with a dominant victory in the Angus Armanasco Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m), prompting Moody to send the filly north for the Randwick Guineas.

“Our initial thoughts were that she was going to go to the Australian Guineas, but we decided to give her an extra week. She missed her first-up run, so she went into that Armansco, and obviously, the Australian Guineas was only a week later, so it was two weeks to the Randwick Guineas or three weeks to the Coolmore, and ultimately, we decided on the Randwick Guineas if we thought she was going well and had the right amount of work in her.

“It's come up as a smallish field, but a quality field in saying that. We're very respectful of that and we're very respectful of the fact that we're taking on the boys as well.”

She's just continued to improve physically all the way through, and I think that's led to race performance improvement as well

Peter Moody

Only one filly has won the Randwick Guineas since it replaced the Canterbury Guineas in 2006, Mosheen (Fastnet Rock) in 2012, but Sheza Alibi has already shown she is capable of matching the colts, having captured the Sandown Guineas last spring.

“I would have beaten the boys on foot that she met in the Sandown Guineas,” Moody joked. “You take some heart from it, but I'm mindful that we are dealing with a totally different opposition quality wise - taking on a Caulfield Guineas winner, and Attica, the Spring Champion Stakes winner, so I'm very mindful of that.”

Despite not being an imposing type of filly, Moody remains confident in her ability.

It's In The Blood: Sheza Alibi

Talk about hitting your bullseyes.

Four years ago, long-time Queensland hobby breeders Fred and Desley Monsour were looking for a stallion to cover their mare Sheza Gypsy, by the relatively obscure stallion Shaft and out of a fairly plain female family.

“She's got nice strength, she's a good sized filly with nice strength. She is not a monster, but she's a good size.”

Sheza Alibi will again sport blinkers, a gear change Moody introduced following her first-up run for the stable when third in the Gothic Stakes (Listed, 1200m) behind boom colt and Newmarket Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) favourite Tentyris (Street Boss).

“I trialled her before she ran first-up behind Tentyris, and I thought she was a bit lackadaisical in her trials. But not knowing a lot about her, I thought ‘we'll just go to the races and have a look at you.’ But straight out of that run, I thought she did need blinkers on.

“She's not blase, but probably needed a little bit of focus and I even think that if she had the blinkers on that day, she might have been undefeated since she joined our care. But there's no disgrace in running third to Tentyris.”

Sheza Alibi will be partnered by Moody’s long-time rider Luke Nolen, who heads to the meeting sitting on 1,999 career winners. Nolen famously rode Moody’s undefeated champion sprinter Black Caviar (Bel Esprit) in 22 of her 25 victories, and has partnered Sheza Alibi to two of her three wins since joining the stable, Zac Purton having been on board for the Angus Armanasco Stakes triumph. The pair will jump from barrier four on Saturday.

“He'll sort it out. She's an adaptable filly. She could sit outside the leader or she could be in the box seat, wherever. She's not afraid to take gaps, as we've seen in the last few runs.”

Reflecting on Nolen’s potential landmark success, Moody said: “It would be special, and well done to him for getting that far, and I think we've had over 900 of them together, so that's been a special association.”

Beyond Saturday, Moody said plans for the filly remain open.

I don't think I'd want to throw her to the wolves in the Doncaster, even if she happened to win on Saturday, but listen, she's nominated for everything, so we're open-minded

Peter Moody

“I haven't thought beyond tomorrow a hell of a lot. She's nominated for everything - The Doncaster, Queen Elizabeth, everything's pie in the sky. She was never going to have a deep preparation because last year, she had a very long season.

“If she ran again, I'd think maybe something like the Queen of the Turf. I don't think I'd want to throw her to the wolves in the Doncaster, even if she happened to win on Saturday, but listen, she's nominated for everything, so we're open-minded.”

The stable will also be represented in their home state of Victoria, where lightly raced and progressive sprinter Gallant Son (Written Tycoon) lines up against Tentyris et al in Flemington’s Newmarket.

Gallant Son (Credit: Racing Photos)

Godolphin’s exciting colt heads the market at $2.30, with John McArdle’s talented filly My Gladiola (I Am Invincible) on the second line of the betting at $5.50.

The field is further strengthened by Angel Capital (Harry Angel), War Machine (Harry Angel), Benedetta (Hellbent) and Wodeton (Wootton Bassett).

Bred in the purple by the Esplin family, Gallant Son is by multiple champion sire Written Tycoon (Iglesia) out of Coolmore Classic (Gr 1, 1500m) winner Plucky Belle (Mossman).

He burst onto the scene with a six-length debut win at Sale as a two-year-old before returning at three to race exclusively in metropolitan company. Consistent without winning, he finished second in the Sunlight Classic (Listed, 1100m) and Morphetville’s Redelva Stakes (Listed, 1100m) in the autumn of his three-year-old campaign.

The entire returned at four with consecutive Benchmark victories at Flemington and Caulfield, prompting the stable to test him at the elite level in the Oakleigh Plate (Gr 1, 1100m), where he finished third behind Tropicus (Too Darn Hot), beaten 3.3 lengths.

“I thought it was a very good run and he was probably a victim of the fact that he drew one, nothing crossed him, and he probably did too much work early,” Moody said of the performance.

Gallant Son has a strong record down the Flemington straight, having started four times for a win and two placings.

“I think back out to 1200 metres, we will ride him more conservative. That doesn't mean he wouldn't be in front, but it means that he'll be going through his first 600 metres a fair bit softer than he'd be going through his first 600 metres in an Oakleigh Plate.”

“We realise we're taking on some very smart sprinting horses again, but he's come on again. [The Oakleigh] was only his third run off a long break. So, I think out to the 1200 now, he's shown that he handles the Flemington straight.

“I believe he's a Group 1 quality sprinter, and that being the case, you run in Group 1 sprints. You've only basically got the Oakleigh Plate, the Newmarket, and the Galaxy as Group 1 handicaps. He's run one of them and was competitive, so he's running in the second one on Saturday.”

Given the handicap conditions and Gallant Son yet to register a black type win, he will carry just 52 kilograms, five kilos less than Tentyris, with Luke Cartwright booked to ride from barrier ten.

“It certainly won't hinder,” Moody said of the light weight. “Regardless of tempo, unless it's breakneck, I would imagine he'd hold a position in the front half of the field and hopefully be given a chance to quicken - where he's probably had the quick and taken out of him at his last two runs early.

“We will ride him to quicken on Saturday, and let's hope that's the case, and he'll need to be right on top of his game to be running well and winning this rush. Everything at home tells me that he is.”

Morning Briefing

Australia

Second for Palace Pier

Palace Pier (Credit: Darley)

Former Darley shuttler Palace Pier (Kingman) sired his second southern hemisphere-bred winner when Southend (2 c ex So We Are by So You Think) won on debut at Newcastle on Friday. Ridden by Dylan Gibbons for Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou, the colt settled toward the rear of the field before working home impressively in the closing stages to score by 1.08 lengths over Skua (Ghaiyyath). Somethings Burnin’ (Too Darn Hot) finished a further 0.16 lengths behind in third. Bred by Defiant Thoroughbred Breeding Trust, Pat Hodby and Charlie Parletta in South Australia, Southend was purchased by his trainers for $425,000 from Mill Park Stud’s 2025 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale draft. He is the third foal and second winner from Adelaide Guineas (Listed, 1600m) winner So We Are (So You Think), the mare herself a three-quarter sister to Group 2 winner and Twin Hills Stud stallion Peltzer (So You Think). The Russian Revolution (Snitzel) half-brother to Southend will be offered at the upcoming Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale, catalogued as Lot 51. Palace Pier shuttled to Darley Kelvinside in New South Wales for one season in 2022 but did not return.

69 for So You Think

Late Coolmore sire So You Think (High Chaparral) registered his 69th individual stakes winner when Tuileries (4 m ex Hediard by Bernardini) landed Friday’s Newcastle Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m). Prepared by Peter Snowden, the mare had finished fifth in the Triscay Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Randwick last start, the form from that contest boosted when third placegetter Verona Rose (Castelvecchio) subsequently won the Guy Walter Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at the same track last Saturday. Ridden by Chad Schofield, Tuileries enjoyed a favourable run just behind the speed before peeling out approaching the 200 metres and finishing strongly to score her first black type victory by a half-length. Locally trained Churchill’s Choice (Churchill) ran on well to finish second, while Melody Again (Your Song) filled third. Bred by GSA Bloodstock, Tuileries was purchased for $360,000 from Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale by her trainer and William Johnson Bloodstock from the draft of Bhima Thoroughbreds. She is the second winner from two to race out of the Bernardini (A.P. Indy) mare Hediard, a half-sister to Listed winners Exocet (Smart Missile) and Ready For Victory (More Than Ready), who was also third in the 2015 Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m). The victory took Tuileries’s record to four wins from 12 starts and lifted her prize-money earnings beyond $400,000.

Snowden plots further black type targets for Tuileries

Peter Snowden has mapped out further black type opportunities for Tuileries after the mare secured her maiden stakes success in Friday’s Newcastle Stakes. Snowden admitted positioning had been a pre-race concern but was pleased to see Tuileries settle into an ideal spot during the running before producing her trademark finishing sprint. “The worry was before the race, we were thinking where we were going to be, and we didn’t want to stick her up too much,” the trainer said. “She began really well, managed to go forward, ease back and drop into the perfect spot. It was a gun ride.” The Randwick horseman said the depth of form around Tuileries had given him confidence heading into the race following her last-start fifth in the Triscay Stakes. “It was a great race the other day and a lot of form has come out of it,” he said. “She's on her way up and she's been stakes-placed a few times, so it's good to get the breakthrough and win on her own.” Snowden now has two key autumn targets in mind for the daughter of So You Think before a potential Queensland Winter Carnival raid “The races I really want to target are the Hawkesbury Crown [Gr 3, 1300m] and the Dark Jewel Classic [Gr 3, 1400m] at Scone,” he said. “If she did something there, we'd go to Brisbane for a shot at a bit more black type up there. She’s very genuine and has a really good 300-metre sprint on her, so if the race pans out right for her she’ll always be hard to beat.”

33 for Churchill

Coolmore’s former shuttle sire Churchill (Galileo) sired his 33rd individual stakes winner when Bright Legend (5 m ex Rose Red by Spinning World) took out the Torney Night Cup (Listed, 2500m) at Pakenham on Friday night. Ridden by Jye McNeil, the five-year-old mare settled fourth in the small field before sweeping around runners turning for home and surging clear to score by 0.8 lengths from Flamin’ Romans (Ghibellines). Steel Run (Real Steel) was another 1.2 lengths back in third. The victory continued a strong preparation for Bright Legend, who was purchased for $2,500 by her emerging trainer Joanne Mugavin via the Inglis June (Early) Online Sale. She has since produced three wins and three placings from eight starts. “This is the biggest win to our name yet, so very thrilled,” Mugavin said. “I started training with just one or two horses and the team is slowly growing. The winners always help.” The mare has now recorded four wins and seven placings from 23 starts with earnings exceeding $200,000. Bred by MJ O’Donnell, Bright Legend initially sold as a $22,000 weanling before changing hands multiple times through Inglis sales before Mugavin secured her. She is the first stakes winner from the Spinning World (Nureyev) mare Rose Red, herself a daughter of Group 3 winner Lume (Imperial Seal). Her victory makes her the sixth southern hemisphere-bred stakes winner for Churchill, who last shuttled to Australia in 2024. He is currently standing at Coolmore Stud in Ireland at a €15,000 (approx. AU$24,753) fee.

Well-bred Supercilious among Inglis March (Early) Online Sale highlights

Lot 113: Supercilious (Credit: Inglis)

Well-bred mare Supercilious (Written Tycoon) is among the headline acts for the Inglis Digital March (Early) Sale, which is now open for bidding. A three-quarter sister to Group 2 winner Marine One (Capitalist) and Group 1-placed sprinter Cannonball (Capitalist), Supercilious placed in the Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) as a juvenile and added three further stakes placings at three, and is offered as a racing and breeding prospect. Meanwhile, Arrowfield Stud has catalogued a six-strong draft featuring mares in foal to, and with foals at foot by, stallions including Maurice (Screen Hero), Hitotsu (Maurice) and Vandeek (Havana Grey), alongside relations to Group 1 winners. A share in Wild Ruler (Snitzel) also offers buyers the chance to gain equity in the promising young Newgate Farm sire. From his first 11 runners, Wild Ruler is already the sire of Group 2 winner Stretan Ruler, a leading contender for the Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m), as well as stakes-performed juvenile Savage Look. The March (Early) catalogue contains 288 lots, including 145 racehorses, 73 broodmares, 42 racehorse shares and 22 yearlings, with stock also in foal to or with progeny by stallions such as All Too Hard (Casino Prince), Bivouac (Exceed And Excel) and Capitalist (Written Tycoon). Other highlights include Royal Ascot Group 3 winner Age Of Kings (Kingman), stakes winner Exclusive Lass (Nicconi) and progressive three-year-old The Real Mahjong (Universal Ruler). Bidding closes from 10am on Wednesday.

Inglis Chairman’s Sale entries closing soon

Entries for the Inglis Chairman’s Sale on May 7 – widely regarded as the most prestigious breeding stock sale in the southern hemisphere – are closing soon. The Chairman’s Sale’s distinctive format has quickly made it one of the most significant auctions on the calendar. A select catalogue of elite race fillies and broodmares offered under lights in a twilight ‘cocktail party’ setting at Riverside Stables, it has delivered fantastic results for vendors. The 2025 edition generated over $54 million in turnover with an 87 per cent clearance rate, with the top half of the catalogue averaging an impressive $1,160,385. Overall, race fillies and mares sold off the track averaged $879,222. Recent years have produced headline transactions including Bella Nipotina (Pride Of Dubai) at $4.2 million and Amelia’s Jewel (Siyouni) at $3.8 million. The 2026 sale will again be staged as a late afternoon event at Riverside. Inglis Bloodstock CEO Sebastian Hutch said the sale’s growth reflects its unique appeal. “At the end of the day the Inglis Chairman’s Sale is the only broodmare sale in Australia that is growing,” Hutch said. “Our clients understand how special the sale is as an event and as an opportunity to showcase these exceptional mares.” To enter your mare into The Chairman’s Sale, contact a member of the Inglis bloodstock team or click here.

Baraqiel scratched from Newmarket

Group 1-winning sprinter Baraqiel (Snitzel) was withdrawn from Saturday’s Newmarket Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) at Flemington on Friday after connections were dissatisfied with the gelding’s blood results. Owner Nathan Bennett confirmed to Racing.com that the seven-year-old would not take his place in the prestigious straight-track sprint. Baraqiel had been an $18 chance in early markets for the 1200-metre feature, now headed by Tentyris (Street Boss) as a $2.25 favourite. Bennett said the decision was made with the horse’s wellbeing in mind and that connections would reassess his program once he returns to full health. A Group 1 winner of the Moir Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Moonee Valley last spring, Baraqiel had been scheduled to continue his autumn campaign with further elite-level targets following the Newmarket.

Sabaj swivels to All-Star Mile

The presence of champion mare Pride Of Jenni (Pride Of Dubai) in Saturday’s $2 million All-Star Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) has complicated plans for Sabaj (Manhattan Rain) who lines up in the feature at Flemington. Prepared by Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr, Sabaj was originally scheduled to run in last week’s Blamey Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) before progressing through the Peter Young Stakes (Gr 2, 1800m) and into the Australian Cup (Gr 1, 2000m). However, a poor blood result forced the stable to abandon that plan and instead aim at the All-Star Mile. “Originally, we wanted to go Blamey, Peter Young, Australian Cup,” Price said. “We thought that was the best option because if Pride Of Jenni is at her best, she is unbeatable.” Sabaj was found to have an inflammatory marker in his blood, something Price said he never ignores when preparing a runner. The gelding has since recovered and the stable is confident he will perform well from a favourable barrier (three). Even so, Pride Of Jenni’s trademark front-running style makes the race difficult to predict. “Those races are so unusual when Pride Of Jenni is blasting away,” Price said. “If she capitulates you’re on, if not, no-one beats her.” Price remains keen to test Sabaj over 2000 metres but admitted the altered preparation leaves his autumn path uncertain. While the Australian Cup remains under consideration, alternative targets include the Doncaster Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) or the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at Randwick next month.

Treasurethe Moment redirected to Sydney targets

Four-time Group 1 winner Treasurethe Moment (Alabama Express) will instead be aimed at Sydney targets next month after being withdrawn from Saturday’s All-Star Mile. The four-year-old, who placed third in last spring’s Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m), was scratched on Friday morning after her trainer Matt Laurie determined she was not quite ready to tackle the $2 million feature second-up. Laurie indicated the mare is likely to remain in Melbourne for her next start, with the Sunline Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) at Caulfield on March 21 shaping as a potential lead-up. A Sydney campaign is then under consideration, with two Group 1 options during the opening weeks of The Championships at Randwick. Those include the Doncaster Handicap on April 4 or the Queen Of The Turf Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) against mares a week later.

Gibbons given Canterbury opportunity on Linebacker

A chance ride in a winter Benchmark at Rosehill has proved a turning point for jockey Dylan Gibbons, who will partner Linebacker (Super Seth) in Saturday’s Canterbury Stakes (Gr 1, 1300m) at Randwick. Gibbons had only recently returned from shoulder surgery when he guided Good Banter (Tavistock) to victory in a Benchmark 78 (2000m) last July. After the race he approached co-trainer John O'Shea to thank him for the opportunity, which ultimately led to Gibbons – alongside fellow jockey Zac Lloyd – riding work for the stable each Tuesday morning. “They took me under their wing, which I’m very grateful for,” Gibbons said. “Now having a couple of their good horses in one race, Zac can’t ride them all, so I’ve been fortunate to borrow Linebacker.” Last year’s Randwick Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner resumes after an interrupted spring campaign highlighted by victory in the Silver Eagle (1300m) over Saturday’s course and distance. Gibbons said he was encouraged after partnering the gelding in trackwork earlier this week. “His work impressed me a lot and I don’t think sharpness will be what beats him on Saturday,” he said. Elsewhere on the program, Gibbons reunites with Good Banter in the Aspiration Quality (Gr 3, 1600m) and also rides Piggyback (Trapeze Artist) in the Randwick City Stakes (Listed, 2000m) for Ciaron Maher after their Parramatta City Cup (Gr 3, 1900m) success last start.

King keeping faith in Green Spaces

Green Spaces (Credit: Sportpix)

Fresh from another successful riding stint in Japan, Rachel King has her sights firmly set on the Sydney autumn carnival, headlined by Saturday’s Randwick Guineas aboard promising three-year-old Green Spaces (Street Boss). King’s belief in the Bjorn Baker-trained gelding was evident when she briefly returned from Japan mid-trip to ride him in a barrier trial before heading back overseas to complete her commitments. “I flew back from Japan halfway through my trip especially to trial him,” King said. “I’ve got a lot of confidence in the horse. He’s very casual and only does what he has to, but I think there is a lot more under the bonnet than what we’ve seen so far.” Green Spaces stamped himself as a rising talent with a dominant victory in the Spring Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) at Newcastle last November, but he was disappointing when sixth behind Ninja (Farnan) in the Hobartville Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) first-up. King believes the run can be forgiven. “He was a bit fresh and put himself too close when he needed to be getting back and running on,” she said. “He’s still an inexperienced horse and the run will have toughened him up.” King expects the gelding to settle better second-up and produce a stronger finish at Randwick. Longer-term she believes he could develop into a Derby contender, though his next two runs will determine the direction of his autumn campaign.

Change of luck overdue for Bauhinia

Backmarker Bauhinia (Hellbent) will again rely on timing and luck in running when she resumes in Saturday’s Wenona Girl Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Randwick. The Lee Cherie Curtis-trained mare has reportedly returned in excellent order and is primed to make an impact first-up after a strong barrier trial leading into her autumn campaign. “Her work has been as good as ever, if not better,” Curtis said. “Her trial was really good. She finished behind Peter Snowden’s horse Raging Force and beat home Arctic Glamour in the trial. She’s going super.” A winner of two races from 11 starts, Bauhinia showed she could measure up to some of Sydney’s better mares during the spring, finishing an unlucky fifth behind Stefi Magnetica (All Too Hard) in The Invitation (1400m) before going down narrowly to Arctic Glamour (Frosted) in the Hot Danish Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m). Curtis said her racing pattern meant patience would again be required from a midfield draw as the mare builds into the race before producing her late surge. “It’s a six-furlong race so she will be getting back anyway,” he said. “We’ll give her the chance to wind up late.” Only three runners are at single-figure odds for the Wenona Girl, with Gangsta Granny (Written Tycoon) holding favouritism ahead of Idle Flyer (Dundeel), while Bauhinia sits on the third line of betting at $9.50.

Vale Des Pope

Leading Victorian breeder Des Pope has died, Blue Gum Farm has announced. Pope was closely associated with the Euroa-based nursery for over three decades and played a role in the breeding of a number of successful racehorses produced by the farm. “Today is a very sad day for everyone at Blue Gum Farm with the passing of our great friend, Mr Des Pope,” the farm’s statement issued on Thursday read. “Des was an incredible man and leaves a legacy in racing for his family to continue on. For more than 30 years, Des was closely connected with Blue Gum Farm and was involved in many of the outstanding racehorses produced here during that time.” Fittingly, Pope’s colours were carried to victory just days before his death when Bridal Waltz (Snitzel) scored at Flemington last Saturday. “Rest in peace, Des. Our sincerest condolences go out to the Pope family from all of us at Blue Gum Farm,” the statement added. Pope was among the original investors in champion stallion Rubiton (Century) when he retired to Blue Gum Farm and remained an influential figure in the Victorian breeding industry for many years. The Pope family also bred a number of high-class performers, including the Group 1-placed Rubiton mares Truly Wicked and Innovation Girl, the latter the granddam of recent Flemington winner Bridal Waltz.

New Zealand

Savaglee secured by Kiwi stallion syndicate

Savaglee (Credit: Race Images)

A syndicate headed by Windsor Park Stud, Mapperley Stud and Lion Rock Bloodstock have secured Savaglee (Savabeel) to stand in New Zealand following his 17-start career for Pam Gerard, which netted five Group wins, including the New Zealand 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m).

Raced by Dick Karreman’s The Oaks Stud, Savaglee – also runner-up in last year’s Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) – was bought by the farm’s general manager Rick Williams on behalf of Karreman as a yearling out of breeder Waikato Stud’s Karaka draft for $400,000. Williams announced the four-year-old’s retirement, due to a joint issue, late last week.

Windsor Park Stud principal Rodney Schick is delighted to add Savaglee to his stallion roster this coming breeding season.

“I am really appreciative that Dick Karreman and stud manager Rick Williams have been so good to deal with throughout the process of our negotiations,” he said.

“Dick has invested so much into New Zealand’s breeding and racing industry over a long period of time with so much success, and Savaglee really is testament to that.

“We’re so thrilled to have secured a colt of Savaglee’s calibre and quality for stud.”

Mapperley Stud principal Simms Davison is just as enthused to offer Savaglee to the public following a stellar career on the track.

“I’m really excited to again be involved with Windsor Park and Lion Rock in securing a superb stallion prospect,” he said.

“I loved him when we inspected him at The Oaks, he oozes quality and style and is a magnificent physical. Together with his race performance and pedigree he really is the total stud package.”

Savaglee’s 2026 service fee will be announced in due course.

King excited as Well Written attempts to extend unbeaten run

Well Written (Credit: Race Images)

Well Written (Written Tycoon) is a red-hot $1.20 chance to stretch her unbeaten run to six in Saturday’s $4 million NZB Kiwi (Listed, 1500m) at Ellerslie and like many, Yulong sales and nominations manager Harry King is hoping she can continue her winning ways. King purchased the exciting filly as a weanling in Australia on behalf of his brother Benji. She was subsequently on sold through Brighthill Farm’s 2024 New Zealand Bloodstock Online Yearling Sale on Gavelhouse Plus to trainer Stephen Marsh and Dylan Johnson Bloodstock, and the King brothers have been enjoying watching her meteoric rise as a three-year-old. Harry King had the pleasure of purchasing a share of Well Written back, on behalf of his employer, ahead of her New Zealand 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) success last November, and she continued on her upward trajectory, subsequently winning the Auckland Guineas (Gr 2, 1400m) and $1.5 million Karaka Millions 3YO (RL, 1600m). “It is a very exciting weekend for Benji and I and the whole team involved in selecting her,” King said. “She is the first Group 1 winner by Written Tycoon for Mr Zhang [Yulong principal]. For me to be involved in purchasing her with Dylan Johnson and Stephen Marsh privately was extra exciting.”

Kingswood looks to end NZ campaign on a high

Kingswood (Credit: Race Images)

It’s been a successful New Zealand raid for the Gavin Bedggood-trained Kingswood (Roaring Lion) and the grey entire will be looking to end it on a high when he heads to Ellerslie on Saturday. The son of Roaring Lion (Kitten’s Joy) won first-up in New Zealand on Boxing Day at Ellerslie in the Zabeel Classic (Gr 1, 2000m) before finishing runner-up to Legarto (Proisir) in last month’s Herbie Dyke Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at Te Rapa. The ledger is now one apiece between the pair, with Legarto running third in the Zabeel Classic, and Bedggood is hoping Kingswood can once again have the Ken and Bev Kelso-trained mare’s measure when they clash in the Bonecrusher New Zealand Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m). “I have got full respect for her [Legarto] and she beat us fair and square last start,” Bedggood said. “We are racing back right-handed, which I know is my horse’s advantage, and hopefully back on a track with a bit more of a forgiving surface can help us.” Bedggood has been rapt with what has turned into a lucrative campaign and he said he would love to return to New Zealand in the future if the opportunity presented itself. “It’s been a well worthwhile trip, and we have been very well looked after,” he said. “Mike Rogers, who has accommodated us for the last 11 weeks at Pukekohe, has bent over backwards to help us. It has been good and I would have no hesitation doing it again.”

Final Return in fine fettle for Ellerslie assignments

Janelle Millar couldn’t have wished for a better lead-up to Saturday’s Auckland Cup (Gr 2, 3200m) at Ellerslie with Final Return (Reliable Man). The New Plymouth-based trainer has the winning polish on the son of Reliable Man (Dalakhani), who was successful last time out on the course in the Avondale Cup (Gr 3, 2400m) and also claimed the Counties Cup (Gr 3, 2100m) four runs back. Final Return finished sixth in last year’s edition of the Cup and tackling two miles again is the least of Millar’s concerns. “He’s always shown us that the further he goes the better he is and he’s a very fit and happy horse,” she said. “He’s also tough and I don’t think the trip will worry him whatsoever.” Millar can also draw confidence from the seven-year-old’s family with his dam Kind Return (Zabeel), who won on four occasions and finished runner-up in the Zabeel Classic (Gr 1, 2000m) and ran fourth in the Auckland Cup. Her brother Respect was also a high-class stayer who numbered the Perth Cup (Gr 2, 3200m) among his eight victories. “Final Return looks well and he’s fit and ready. I’ve done all I can and now so it’s up to him and the jockey,” Millar said.

Special Sakura aiming for more black type joy

Special Sakura (Staphanos) showed her true colours last time out when she successfully stepped up to black type company to triumph off the front in the Fulton Family Stakes (Listed, 1500m) and she will attempt to back up that success when she contests Saturday’s Dubai Classic (Gr 2, 1400m) at Ellerslie. “She’s gone under the radar a bit, but we’ve always thought a lot of her,” the mare’s trainer Janelle Millar said. “She’s thrown in a few awkward runs, but we have had problems with her stifles and since we’ve medicated them and found exactly what the problem is, we can work with it. Her work has been phenomenal lately and she is just so well.” Stablemate Laura’s Legacy (Ocean Park) will look to add to her tally when she contests the Windsor Park Stud 3YO Trophy (1500m) earlier on the Ellerslie card. “I liked her run last start, the horse in front of her was taking her line a bit and she was reluctant to take the gap,” Millar said. “Chris [Dell, rider] said to try the hood on her and I did in pacework, but she pulled too hard, so I’ve opted to put winkers on her. She’s got a good turn of foot and has showed us a heap, so I’m expecting a good run from her.”

HK: Hayes looks to reignite title bid at Sha Tin

David Hayes will be hoping a change in fortune can revive his trainers’ championship bid when he takes nine runners to Sunday’s Sha Tin meeting. The Hall Of Famer had been the early pace-setter this season, but his strike-rate has taken a hit amid a slew of near-misses since the start of last month, and he now finds himself third in the trainers’ title race on 36 wins and 28 seconds behind Mark Newnham (36 wins, 32 seconds) and leader Caspar Fownes on 39 wins. Hayes will saddle two live chances in the Class 2 Devon Handicap (1800m) in the hope that 2024/25 DBS x Manulife Million Challenge winner Soleil Fighter (Sea The Moon) can build on an impressive all-the-way win at Happy Valley last time out, and progressive four-year-old Fortune Boy (Contributer) can impress from the foot of the weights on his Class 2 debut. “It was a good win; he dictated and was able to hang on,” Hayes said of Soleil Fighter’s recent Happy Valley victory. “He’s been a wonderful horse. He’s only won the one this year, but he’s earned money in all of his starts – around HK$5 million, so he’s a horse a lot of owners would love.” Hayes said he felt Fortune Boy had been unlucky in some of his nine runs this term, but had high hopes for the New Zealand-bred gelding. “He’s been blocked badly and not got runs at different times,” the trainer explained. “The reason I’m running him is, it’s his last chance to qualify for the Derby. And I do think he’s one of the horses that can run 2000 metres, and would run a good race in the Derby if he managed to bully his way in. I really feel that if he can beat this sort of field – out of the handicap – he warrants a place in the Derby.”

FR: Respected administrator Louis Romanet dies at 78

Louis Romanet, one of the most important racing administrators of his generation and a powerful advocate for the growth of the sport internationally, has died at the age of 78. Romanet joined France Galop's predecessor, the Societe d'Encouragement in 1968. He rose through the ranks of Flat racing's organising body to succeed his father, Jean, in 1986. When France Galop was created in May 1995 from the fusion of the bodies which had hitherto run Flat and jump racing in France, Romanet was originally given the twin briefs of internal organisation and international affairs, before ascending to the role of director general in 1998. He continued in the role of France Galop director general until his retirement in 2007, but continued in a role extremely dear to his heart, that of president of the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities (IFHA), which he held from its foundation in 1994 until 2021, when he accepted the honorary title of IFHA chairman emeritus. Among Romanet's many legacies are his co-founding of the television channel France Courses - later Equidia - while he and his wife donated a sizeable collection of artworks relating to horse racing to the Les Franciscaines cultural centre in Deauville.
