Warwoven looks to cement last minute Slipper spot in Pago Pago Stakes

Suddenly transformed after a horror start to 2026, Bjorn Baker is not daunted by history as he sends one-time favourite Warwoven (Sword Of State) towards the Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) via the last chance saloon.

Having dominated the market - and sat high on the prize-money qualification list - for the $5 million juvenile highlight for many weeks after winning his first two starts, Warwoven suddenly finds himself on the edge of Slipper oblivion.

What's On

The colt was a raging favourite for the Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) after scoring by 2.15 lengths at Randwick and 3.32 lengths at Eagle Farm, but was ordered out of the Gold Coast feature due to lameness in the off fore.

That meant he also missed crucial training while recovering, in a major disruption to his hopes for the world’s richest two-year-old race.

Warwoven finally resumed on February 28 in Randwick’s Skyline Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) and was sent out a heavily backed $1.80 favourite. But while he loomed on the inside to momentarily take the lead at the 100 metres, his lack of condition told late as he weakened into a 0.45-length fourth.

He’s now been deposed as Slipper favourite by his stablemate and fellow Ridgmont colours-bearer Paradoxium (Extreme Choice), another comeback colt who scored a powerful victory in Saturday’s Todman Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m).

Bookmakers on Monday had Paradoxium at $5 and Warwoven $6 for Saturday week’s Slipper, ahead of last Saturday’s Reisling Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m)-winning filly Chayan (I Am Invincible).

But Warwoven’s lofty place in the market is dependent on one key factor: he still needs to secure his spot in the Slipper field, which comprises 16 starters plus four emergencies.

Having slipped to 18th on the order of entry, Warwoven will now seek to cement his ticket in this Saturday’s final males’ race carrying Slipper qualification for the winner - the Pago Pago Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m), at Rosehill.

“Win and you’re in” sounds tantalising, but the history for young colts and geldings taking this path to the Slipper isn’t golden.

Only one horse has won the Pago Pago and backed up a week later to take the Slipper in the past 20 years. The good news for Warwoven is it was achieved only three years ago, by Shinzo (Snitzel).

The two subsequent results have been only middling.

In 2024, Pago Pago winner Dublin Down (Exceedance) ran a 4.41-length 11th in the Slipper after being trapped three-wide without cover in a forward spot under Hugh Bowman, from gate 12.

Last year, Skyhook (Written Tycoon) managed an only fair seventh from barrier eight, seemingly left with no finishing burst after a decent run in transit.

Shinzo’s preparation was one run lighter than Warwoven’s. After debuting on January 28, the Chris Waller-Coolmore colt won the Pago Pago at his third start, and the Slipper at his fourth.

Warwoven will be having his fourth start this Saturday. But Baker believes this altered plan, and larger late workload, could transpire in his colt’s favour, after he’d had eight weeks between his second start win at Eagle Farm and his fourth in the Skyline.

“It could turn out to be a blessing,” Baker told ANZ News.

“You suddenly go in with an excellent fitness base. Obviously a little bit depends on how he comes through the race, but that’s the same pretty much with any two year old, from run to run and race to race.

“So in terms of the Golden Slipper set-up, I don’t think it’s the worst thing. We want to cement his spot, first and foremost, and unless things change he’ll be running.

“I’m not too worried about it. He’s had a good foundation. Seven days between runs? He’s a big, strong colt, so I don’t think that’ll worry him too much at all.”

Baker said Warwoven would have “a good gallop” on Tuesday morning, with Rachel King - his partner in all three starts so far - booked to ride him again.

And the Warwick Farm trainer is confident Warwoven will be a stronger proposition in the Pago Pago compared with how he saw out the Skyline.

“He went well in the Skyline,” he said. “You always want to win, but we knew he was going to be vulnerable first-up after a fair bit of time off. He wasn’t necessarily on the best part of the track either.

“So there was definitely some merit there with the run.”

After a booming 2025, Baker had started to think his new year had been cursed.

Not only was Warwoven taken out of the Magic Millions, hopes to run Paradoxium in that race - after his scintillating victory in Wyong’s MM 2YO Classic (RL, 1100m) at his second start - were scuppered by a bout of pneumonia.

But Baker’s year turned two weeks ago when Pericles (Street Boss) won Caulfield’s Futurity Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m).

And on Saturday, the affable trainer enjoyed a double feature triumph.

Paradoxium led throughout to take the Todman by 1.43 lengths - a win made all the more meritorious given it came first-up after a 12-week break following his pneumonia.

And a couple of hours later Caballus (I Am Invincible) also led all the way to give Baker his first victory in Flemington’s Newmarket Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m).

That win is colouring Baker’s thinking for the better as he eyes the Pago Pago-Slipper double with Warwoven.

Paradoxium (Credit: Sportpix)

“You can’t worry about history too much,” he said. “I don’t think Warwick Farm had a Newmarket winner until Saturday.

“So history’s there to be changed. But anyway, you’ve gotta do what you’ve gotta do. You’ve got to get them into the race or everything’s irrelevant.

“Warwoven came out of his last race as good as gold, so I’m looking forward to seeing what he can do on Saturday.”

Baker was thrilled with Paradoxium’s effort in the Todman - unbothered by the fact Chayan went almost a full second faster in winning the Reisling - and says he finds it hard to split his two leading Slipper contenders.

“Paradoxium has come out great. I couldn’t be happier with him,” Baker said.

“I thought it was a good effort on Saturday. Obviously, he had things go his way, but when you’re first-up over 1200 at Randwick with two weeks into the Slipper, I think it was an ideal trial.

“People talked about the time, but we can overestimate times at times. We know he can run time. He did that at Wyong. So from that point of view, I’m very happy with him going into the Slipper. We’ll be able to give him a couple of good gallops into next Saturday.”

Baker’s stable has been surging in the past couple of seasons, yet he hasn’t had the most glorious of Slipper histories.

Until last year, he’d had just the two Slipper starters. Windjammer (Bernardini) ran ninth in 2013, and Unencumbered (Testa Rossa) finished one place worse a year later.

Then last year, he had well-performed filly Within The Law (Lucky Vega) as an each way chance at $20, but she opted to throw her rider Jason Collett after 500 metres and complete the race inside the running rail.

Baker, who now has 11 Group 1s to his name, is well aware this year shapes as his strongest chance by far to lift Australia’s greatest stallion-maker, and with two well-bred colts to boot.

“Hopefully, I’ve got one very good chance in Paradoxium, and it’ll be great if Warwoven can cement his spot,” Baker said.

“Paradoxium is a horse on the way up, whereas with a few of the others there might be some questions as to where they are.

“It’s a very, very important race from a commercial point of view, and an Australian breeding point of view, so it pretty much means the world to myself and my connections.

“I don’t think there’s too much between my main two, but I guess we’re going to find out more over the next week or so. Of course, it’s a race where you ned a decent gate too.”

Highlighting the peaks and troughs nature of this game, Baker now not only has to top two in the market for the Slipper but also for Perth’s $5m slot sprint The Quokka (1200m), as he seeks his third win in four runnings of the race. Caballus is at $4 while Overpass (Vancouver) - winner of the first two Quokkas - is at $6.

“It’s a hard game, but you only need one good raceday to kick back,” Baker said. “It was a good day on Saturday. I guess you need your good horses to step up for the carnival, and I’m lucky that’s been the case.”

Baker will likely have a second colt in the Pago Pago in Godolphin’s Euripedes (Street Boss). After a debut third in a Rosehill two-year-old handicap in November, and a second in a Canterbury maiden on February 27, he’s at $101 for the Slipper.

“I like him. He’s genuine,” Baker said. “He was good last time, and he’s going to strip fitter too.

“He’s definitely got some upside. He’s going to have to win to make the Slipper, but if he wins the Pago Pago, he’s a chance.”

Australia

33 for Too Darn Hot

Bootlegger pictured as a yearling (Credit: Inglis)

Darley’s shuttle sensation Too Darn Hot (Dubawi) sired his 33rd individual stakes winner on Monday when Bootlegger (3 g ex Princess Youmzain by Dalakhani) landed the Morphettville Guineas (Listed, 1600m) at Morphettville. Ridden by Emily Finnegan for trainers Dan Clarken and Oopy Macgillivray, the three-year-old gelding found plenty for pressure inside the final 200 metres to repel the persistent challenge of Cannae (Maurice) by 0.6 lengths. There was a further 0.1 lengths back to Dirty Old Town (Dirty Work) in third. "I haven't had many nice days on the race track lately, but look, this always just makes you not want to stop," Finnegan told Racing.com. "I'm just rapt to have the opportunity to ride some real nice horses for Dan and Oopy. They have some real talent in the stable. I reckon I hopped on him [Bootlegger] as a two-year-old and I said to Dan 'I don't think I've sat on something so quick since being at the [Phillip] Stokes stable'. It was lovely to retain the ride today, I wasn't sure with the big jockeys coming over but they've been very loyal." Passed in below his $125,000 reserved when offered by Twin Hills Stud at the 2024 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale, Bootlegger is a half-brother to winner Zain Prince (So You Think), out of the winning Dalakhani (Darshaan) mare Princess Youmzain, herself a half-sister to Group 1 scorer turned sire Akeed Mofeed (Dubawi). Too Darn Hot returned to Darley Australia for the 2025 breeding season at a fee of $275,000 (inc GST).

223 for Exceed And Excel

Recently retired Darley stalwart Exceed And Excel (Danehill) was provided with his 223rd individual stakes winner on Monday when the Ciaron Maher-trained Celerity (4 m ex Ellicazoom by Testa Rossa) scored in the Manihi Classic (Listed, 1100m) at Morphettville. Sent off a short-priced favourite under Jamie Melham, the four-year-old mare denied Mic Drop (Microphone) by 0.9 lengths with a further 0.8 lengths back to the third-placed Thunder Shoc (Vino Rosso). The win took the mare's record to three wins and seven placed efforts from 13 starts with earnings of over $220,000. Celerity was purchased for $850,000 by Godolphin Australia from the Kitchwin Hills draft at the 2023 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale. Bred by Phoenix Thoroughbreds, she is the best of two winners from as many to race out of the Group 3-winning, Group 1-placed Testa Rossa (Perugino) mare Ellicazoom, herself a daughter of elite-level winner Ellicorsam (Fimiston). Exceed And Excel was retired from stallion duties in 2024.

American Wolf leads home the pack in Adelaide Cup

Having ridden the biggest winner of his career with American Wolf’s (4 g Tivaci - Zelitist by Zabeel) victory in Monday's Adelaide Cup (Gr 2, 3200m), rider Jett Stanley was unable to enter celebrations for too long as he shot off to board a slight to Sydney with eyes on a Group 1 this weekend. Stanley will partner Jenni The Fox (Too Darn Hot) in a track gallop ahead at Warwick Farm on Tuesday ahead of the Coolmore Classic (Gr 1, 1500m) at Rosehill on Saturday, and tuned up with a rousing success aboard the Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young-trained American Wolf. Joining Irish import Highland Bling (Highland Reel) for the lead inside the final 300 metres, the pair engaged in a thrilling battle to the line, with the Kiwi-bred coming out on top by 0.1 lengths at the line in a photo-finish. There was a further 5.7 lengths back to the third-placed Hurry Curry (Ocean Park) as the front pair drew clear. "It's been a whirlwind the last 12 days," Stanley, who rode Asva (Capitalist) to Launceston Cup (Gr 3, 2400m) success on February 25, told Racing.com. "I've travelled 18,000 kilometres in two weeks. It's been crazy. I've done a Group 3, a Group 2, so hopefully I can do a Group 1 now." Victorious in the VRC St Leger (Listed, 2800m) at Flemington in April last year, American Wolf had been set for Monday's race by the Busuttin and Young team. "This was always the horse's Grand Final," Young said. "We were a little worried we weren't going to get into the race with his rating. It was the sixth start [of his preparation] today, but Jett rode him a treat. He relaxed nicely and that is what he needed. Jett is coming along in leaps and bounds and he's turning into such a great jockey. I've known him since he was a baby and I'm absolutely over the moon."

Arran Bay lands C S Hayes Memorial Cup

Local trainer Phillip Stokes got himself in amongst the stakes winners on Monday’s Morphettville card when Arran Bay (7 g All Too Hard - Stolen Girlfriend by Canny Lad) proved best in the C S Hayes Memorial Cup (Listed, 1600m). Ridden by Jamie Melham, who was enjoying a stakes double on the card, the seven-year-old gelding shot clear inside the final 150 metres and was eased down at the line to beat Verdad (Justify) by 1.1 lengths. There was a further 1.9 lengths back to A Samurai Mind (Shamus Award) in third. Monday’s victory was the second stakes win of Arran Bay’s career after scoring in the Furphy Plate (Listed, 1800m) in 2024.

Ole Dancer chasing another Sydney Group 1

Ole Dancer (Credit: Racing Photos)

Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) heroine Ole Dancer (Ole Kirk) will bid to land a second Group 1 this weekend when she takes to Rosehill for the Coolmore Classic (Gr 1, 1500m). The Peter Moody and Katheirne Coleman-trained filly has made two starts since her Guineas win back in October, a runner-up effort in the Desirable Stakes (Listed, 1400m) on February 14 before a third placing in the Surround Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) a fortnight later. Moody said Ole Dancer had progressed well since her Randwick placing and reported she had galloped well in front of Coleman in Sydney on the weekend. "She stayed up there and has done well," Moody said. "Sheza Alibi just likes the home environment a bit more, whereas Ole Dancer, you could park her in an apartment somewhere and it wouldn't bother her. Katherine's been up there and is really pleased with how she is. Zac Lloyd rides her on Saturday as Trumby [Luke Nolen] can't make the weight. She probably has one more [run] if she pulls up alright, but if she doesn't, she'll go to the paddock. The fact that we are bringing her home, she won't run again within three weeks, because it would be too hard to make two trips in two weeks, but I'm mindful she was in work for 11 months last year. That was why I wanted to run her in the Australian Guineas and then maybe have one or two runs in Sydney before she spelled."

Peter Young Stakes a possible for Light Infantry Man

The Ciaron Maher-trained Light Infantry Man (Fast Company) could take in Saturday's Peter Young Stakes (Gr 2, 1800m) at Caulfield en route to Group 1 targets later this month. The dual Group 1-winning seven-year-old returned to action with a victory in the MRC Foundation Cup (Gr 3, 1600m) at Caulfield on February 7 and could take in this weekend's Group 2 before either returning to defend his crown in the Australian Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) at Flemington or tackling the Tancred Stakes (Gr 1, 2400m) at Rosehill. Both races are set to be run on March 28. "He is one horse that does enjoy [Pride Of] Jenni's speed," Maher said. "In the Australian Cup when she was ripping along, he was one of the few horses that had a smile on his face during the run. [Ethan] Brownie [Brown] put him into the race off a hot speed, so you know he loves a true gallop and the 1800 metres at this stage of his preparation should suit him. After Saturday we're looking at the Tancred Stakes potentially with him. The 2400 metres at weight-for-age looks like it will suit him."

Closer To Free set to be late Slipper nom

Following his excellent runner-up effort in the Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) last month, Danny O'Brien's crack colt Closer To Free (Street Boss) looks set to be nominated for the Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) on March 21. The son of Street Boss (Street Cry) landed the Blue Diamond Prelude (C\&G) (Gr 3, 1100m) on debut on February 7 and then returned two weeks later to run a mighty second to Streisand (Magnus), beaten 0.8 lengths, in the Blue Diamond itself. “Unless the wheels fall off, he’ll be a late nomination,” O’Brien said. “He arrived up there on Thursday night and Jamie Melham is making her way up to Sydney on Tuesday to partner him in a trial at Rosehill. We didn’t want to run him again [before the Slipper] and were just thinking four weeks between runs, he needed to have a little bit of work to be spot on for the Slipper. He’s only had two starts, and he might have a couple of more runs in him yet as he’s taking it all in his stride so far.” Closer To Me was also paid up as a late entry ($55,000) into the Blue Diamond Stakes after his Prelude win. “It seems even enough,” O'Brien said of the Golden Slipper. “It’s a year where the [Victorian] form looks strong enough to be competitive. We couldn’t be happier – he pulled up very well.”

Eternal Warrior out of Slipper

Lloyd Kennewell has ruled out Eternal Warrior (Extreme Warrior) from contesting the Golden Slipper due to an issue with his suspensory branch. The juvenile son of Extreme Warrior (Extreme Choice) has shown up well in three starts to date, winning the Merson Cooper Stakes (Listed, 1000m) on debut before a third placing in the Blue Diamond Prelude (C\&G) and sixth-place effort in the Blue Diamond. “Eternal Warrior arrived in Sydney in the last 48 hours in preparation for the 2026 Golden Slipper. After working the horse this morning his regular rider reported that he did not feel good or normal in his action. Upon further examination with our vet team, scans revealed the colt has significant changes to his suspensory branch. This is shattering for our loyal clients all the way through to our entire team that work and care for not only Eternal Warrior but all of our horses on a daily basis. In the coming days we will assess the extent of the damage and make sure that he gets the best treatment and rehab program possible in a bit to have him back racing in the not too distant future,” a statement from Kennewell Racing read.

Vinery Stud Stakes next for Belle Cheval

Belle Cheval (Credit: Race Images)

After coming within inches of landing Saturday’s $4 million NZB The Kiwi (Listed, 1500m), rising star Belle Cheval (Savabeel) is set to head to Sydney for the Vinery Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m). The Mark Walker and Sam Bergerson-trained filly put in a massive effort to go down by just 0.1 lengths to hot favourite Well Written (Written Tycoon) in the marquee race on Champions Day. Now plans are being put in place for her to travel to Sydney and take on the likes of New Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Ohope Wins (Ocean Park), who carries the same green and white Yulong colours as Well Written and has already been transferred to champion trainer Chris Waller. “She was so close to what would have been a dream result, but we’re still thrilled with her, so proud of our wonderful filly,” co-owner/breeder David Archer said. “I had a good talk with Mark [Walker] yesterday and he was pleased to tell me she pulled up as if she hadn’t had a race. That being the case, and subject to everything going to plan in the meantime, she will be flown to Sydney and run in the Vinery, which looks ideal as a fillies’ Group 1 over 2000 metres. That will be it for this season, she won’t be going to the [ATC] Oaks, and the most likely plan then will be to head down to the Mornington Peninsula for a spell with a view to a spring campaign in Victoria. As much as we would like to start her in the first Group 1s of the spring back here, the risk of wet tracks at that stage of the season in New Zealand makes Melbourne a more attractive target.”

Melbourne Cup bid on the cards for Manzor Blue

Most trainers dream of competing in the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) and Palmerston North-based handler Lisa Latta may have found her horse to get her to Flemington on the first Tuesday in November. Talented stayer Manzor Blue (Almanzor) once again proved her staying qualities at Ellerslie on Saturday when finishing runner-up behind Australian raider Paradise Storm (Masked Marvel) in the Auckland Cup (Gr 2, 3200m). It comes just over a month after her victory in the Wellington Cup (Gr 3, 3200m) at Trentham, and Latta was delighted to see the daughter of Almanzor (Wootton Bassett) vindicate her connections’ decision to pay the late nomination fee for the Auckland Cup. “I am really rapt with her,” Latta said. “Winning the Wellington Cup and then to carry on with it. She was the first New Zealand horse home, which is always good. We are really proud of what she has done." The spelling paddock is now beckoning the five-year-old mare and Latta said she will sit down and devise a plan with Go Racing, who race the mare, about getting Manzor Blue to Melbourne in the spring. “She will go to the paddock now for six to eight weeks and then we may well look at something in Australia in the spring,” Latta said. “We will give her the chance [to get to the Melbourne Cup], but she has gone out for a well-deserved break now.”

Wyndham Cup victory a Sight To See

You could be forgiven for thinking you were watching winter racing at Riverton on Sunday, with horses competing on a Heavy 9 surface, but that played right into the hands of local wet track specialist Sight To See (Time Test) in the Wyndham Cup (2000m). The Kelvin Tyler-trained mare’s previous two victories had come on rain-affected going, and punters flocked to her when the wet weather arrived, backing her into a $3.40 favourite. From her wide draw, she settled towards the rear of the field before apprentice jockey Amber Riddell sent her around the pack from the 800 metres. She found the front within 200 metres and Riddell elected to continue her run out wide in the better footing. Several runners elected to take the short cut along the rail when turning for home, but Riddell kept to her strategy and it paid off, with Sight To See running out a length victor over Sefton (Iffraaj). “She loves the mud and I was pretty confident she would go a good race,” Tyler said. “She is a really genuine horse so it was good to get it done. The inside was the place to be early on and it started to get a bit chopped up. Sometimes it [going to the outside] doesn’t work and sometimes it does, but yesterday it worked well.”

HK: So keeps faith with Top Dragon ahead of Hong Kong Derby

Andrea Atzeni, fresh from a four-timer at Sha Tin on Sunday, will reunite with the Chris So-trained Top Dragon (Pierata) in the Hong Kong Derby (Listed, 2000m), the final leg of the Four-Year-Old Classic Series, on Sunday, March 22. So is hoping that luck will finally be on their side. Top Dragon has been consistent in recent runs: fifth in the Hong Kong Classic Mile (Listed, 1600m) two starts back, and a gallant second – beaten only a short-head – in the Class 2 Year Of The Horse Cup Handicap (1600m) last start. Both efforts were hampered by interference, crowded near the 150 metres in the Classic Mile and again in the straight last time, leaving the horse short of clear running. “Hopefully we will have better luck in the Derby. He ran exceptionally well last start, just no luck at all," So said. "However, he pulled up well. He’s very consistent, and if we can have better luck this time and can enjoy the run of the race, he’ll run a good race in the Derby.” So bypassed the Hong Kong Classic Cup (Listed, 1800m), instead targeting the Hong Kong Derby directly. A barrier trial is scheduled for Tuesday, with Atzeni aboard. “Atzeni rode him well three starts back in a Class 2 mile race, so I believe he can bring out the best in the horse. Skipping the Classic Cup means the trial will sharpen him up nicely two weeks before the big race,” So added. “I’ve always believed he can handle the 2000-metre trip of the Derby. I look forward to seeing him run another honest race in the final leg of the Four-Year-Old Classic Series."

Nine for Hello Youmzain

Cambridge Stud shuttler Hello Youmzain (Kodiac) chalked up his ninth individual stakes winner when Hello Jo (3 c ex La Jonction by Kingman) landed Sunday’s Prix Maurice Caillault (Listed, 1800m) at Chantilly. Ridden by Cristian Demuro for trainer Mario Baratti, the three-year-old colt scored by a length over Segall (Sottsass) with a further neck back to the third-placed Anashkaya (Starspangledbanner). Bred by Haras D'Etreham, Ecurie Hugo, Pierre Pilarski and E De Chambu, Hello Jo was purchased outside the ring for €70,000 out of Haras D'Etreham at the 2024 Arqana Deauville August Yearling Sale. Raced by Pegase Bloodstock, Fal Stud Sas Et Al, he is the only foal to race from two out of the winning Kingman (Invincible Spirit) mare La Jonction. Hello Youmzain, who shuttles to Cambridge Stud from Haras D’Etreham, stood the 2025 breeding season at a fee of $30,000 (plus GST).

Ten for Calyx

Coolmore’s late former shuttler Calyx (Kingman) sired his tenth individual stakes winner on Sunday when the Patrik Olave-trained My Calyx Cen (3 c ex My Gi Gi by E Dubai) took out the Prix Montenica (Listed, 1300m) at Chantilly. Ridden by Aurelien Lemaitre, the three-year-old colt proved a half-length too strong for No Tune (No Nay Never) with a further head back to Rencontre Sportive (Seabhac) in third place. Bred and raced by Yeguada Centurion Slu, My Calyx Cen is a half-brother to four winners being one of six foals to race out of My Gi Gi (E Dubai), who was a Grade 2 winner and Grade 1 placegetter on the track. Calyx, who shuttled to Coolmore Australia in 2020 and 2021, died last year due to an acute foot injury.

Four for Charlatan

Forced Entry (3 f ex Violent Times by Violence) became the fourth individual stakes winner for Hill ‘N Dale Farms stallion Charlatan (Speightstown) when landing Sunday’s Santa Ysabel Stakes (Gr 3, 8.5f) at Santa Anita. Ridden by Juan Hernandez for trainer Bob Baffert, the three-year-old filly defeated Bank Shot (Game Winner) by a length and three-quarters. There was a further length and a half back to French Blue (Gun Runner) in third. Bred by Stoneriggs Farm, Forced Entry was purchased for US$375,000 by Three Amigos at the 2024 Keeneland September Yearling Sale and races for Michael E Pegram, Karl Watson and Paul Weitman. Forced Entry is the only winner from two to race out of the stakes-winning Violence (Medaglia D’Oro) mare Violent Times. Charlatan is standing at a fee of US$25,000 (approx. AU$35,380).

No walkover

Well Written (Credit: NZB)

Five, ten or 20 years from now a glance at the result of the 2026 NZB Kiwi (Listed, 1500m), will read that the favourite, Well Written (Written Tycoon), duly won from Belle Cheval (Savabeel) by a very small margin.

That is the cold fact but on site the race was electric, especially over the final few metres when Belle Cheval rushed hard late. Did Well Written hold on?

Seconds later the crowd gasped when the head-on camera showed Well Written veering toward the outside rail. Did she contact Belle Cheval? Did Belle Cheval’s jockey have to stop riding?

On top of Alabama Lass (Alabama Express) knocking over the running rail when leading the King’s Plate (Gr 3, 1200m) then Legarto (Proisir) inching past Waitak (Proisir) to claim a nostalgic last New Zealand win, the Kiwi provided its own thrills and the public were properly entertained by top class racing. Unfortunately, Champions Day only occurs once a year.

Anything can happen

Stephen Marsh, trainer of Well Written, can now appreciate what Peter Moody and Chris Waller experienced when managing the careers of Black Caviar (Bel Esprit) and Winx (Street Cry). The former was unbeaten in 25 starts whereas the latter strung together 33 successive wins. Well Written’s record stands at six but pressure is the same. It is not until race day and scoring the next win that the trainer is satisfied that he or she is doing the right thing.

As suggested in Kiwi Chronicles (Feb 24th): “On paper, Well Written is clearly the one to beat plus she has Belle Cheval’s scalp from the (New Zealand 1,000) Guineas but the race is not run on paper. At this point, Belle Cheval looks the biggest threat and her last two runs have shown she is in for the fight. Her connections will have more than a smidge of confidence leading into the big race with the possible added advantage of more recent race fitness.”

Well Written’s previous start was January 24, in the Karaka Million 3YO Classic (RL, 1600m) compared with Belle Cheval, who won the Uncle Remus Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) at Ellerslie on February 21. Belle Cheval had also won on January 24, the Group 3 Almanzor Trophy (1200m). That extra run ensured she was fit for her challenge and she very nearly upset Well Written who may have lacked the same sharpness.

Matt Cartwright aboard Well Written had to make his move earlier than planned and raced clear from the 300m. From second last, Belle Cheval kept up a strong run in the straight, looking like she might overhaul the winner who kicked late to barely hold on by a short half-head. A stride past the post Belle Cheval was in front in a splendid effort.

There was no contact even though Well Written veered towards the outside rail at the 50m. Noted in the Stewards’ report was that Belle Cheval also changed ground by shifting inwards from the 150m. The Stewards dismissed the protest by Belle Cheval’s connections.

The $80,000 outlay for Well Written at the 2024 NZB Online National Yearling Sale was $80,000 well spent as the filly has banked more than $2.6 million. Significantly, she remains unbeaten in six starts, five of which are stakes including a precious Group 1 and is looking like New Zealand’s Horse of the Year. From all accounts, her next start will be in Australia but not this autumn. An Australian Group 1 is the target.

Flemington revisit

The Australian Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) is a distinct possibility for Legarto who rounded out her New Zealand career with a tenacious first Ellerslie Group 1 victory in Saturday’s Bonecrusher New Zealand Stakes (2000m), making it back-to-back Group 1s, having scored a second Herbie Dyke Stakes (2000m) at Te Rapa a month ago.

In Saturday’s New Zealand swansong she had three behind her at the 1000m and began her run from the 600m. With 300m remaining she had four to beat. At the 200m it was down to two and at the 100m just one but over the final 50m she gradually got the upper hand over Waitak and was able to hold the advantage to the line.

Legarto is no stranger to Flemington. Her victory in the 2023 Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) places her in rare company and when she shows up at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale this May she is certain to attract much attention. An Australian Group 1 is treasured. That she has four further Group 1s is a pure bonus. Also, four of her five placings are at the elite level. She is all quality.

Lightly raced, six-year-old Legarto has faced the starter just 24 times and has won half of them, earning more than $3 million. On the downside is that no New Zealand stud or ownership group will be able to afford her. She will be lost to the New Zealand Stud Book.

Stablemate skittles plans

Road To Paris (Credit: Race Images)

Yulong’s tactical New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) move, withdrawing their recent purchase Ohope Wins (Ocean Park) in order to potentially secure a Group 1 by another recent purchase, Autumn Glory (Ocean Park), almost paid off. Their tactic didn’t allow for the Derby-winning mastery of Roger James. Winner Road To Paris (Circus Maximus) is trained by the same Roger James in partnership with Robert Wellwood.

Road To Paris arrived at Ellerslie as a one-race winner from six starts although he was twice first past the post. At Otaki last November, for the Wellington Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m), he had that race won but shied at the 50m, dropping his rider.

In the interim he placed twice including a last-start second in the Avondale Guineas (Gr 2, 2100m), finishing strongly yet racing greenly, a trait he repeated on Saturday resulting in an enquiry. On this occasion he shifted inwards and hampered both Autumn Glory and third placed Geneva (Time Test). Rider George Rooke was suspended until March 27 and fined $10,000 so the interference was clearly quite severe yet the stewards allowed the placings to stand.

Road To Paris sat second last until the 800m but the field compacted near the last corner and he was able to track Autumn Glory to the 300m, sitting fifth. There were four across the track at the 200m but at the 100m just two, Road To Paris and Autumn Glory had sorted themselves out with the former outstaying the filly. Geneva was a shade unlucky and lunged late for a solid third.

Not sold at any sale, he is the fifth winner of five to race from four-race winner Spirit Of Heaven (Savabeel) who ranks as a three-quarter sister to Lights Of Heaven (Zabeel), winner of the Australasian Oaks (Gr 1, 2000m). Lights Of Heaven was all class and landed five other Group wins and was three times Group 1 placed.

This is the family of four-time Group 1 winner Alamosa (O’Reilly) and traces to Starquita (Star Kingdom), the dam of another New Zealand Derby winner, Mansingh (Wilkes), although that was more than 50 years ago.

The win boosts the fortunes of Windsor Park Stud’s Circus Maximus (Galileo), now the sire of a Group 1 winner from his first crop and three in total.

Tweaks?

Edition two of the NZB Kiwi was different. Not better, not worse, just different.

Compared with edition one, Auckland Thoroughbred Racing, in conjunction with New Zealand Bloodstock, NZTR and Entain, took what clearly worked well in 2025 and applied the same formula. The question is: Did it work this time around?

Official attendance figures aside, the birdcage area in front of the Members’ stand was nowhere near as busy as it was last year, especially for the $4 million Kiwi. In 2025, that area was packed and patrons had to stand shoulder to shoulder. This year, not so much. There was plenty of space. The loud speaker system was loud. Holding a one-to-one conversation in the birdcage area was difficult. The volume was one thing but the drums and bass were another. The effect was bone shaking.

The big race itself was also different. The most notable difference was that this year one runner dominated the betting and had done so for many, many weeks. The 2025 field was more even.

Well Written virtually scared the opposition away. The remaining slot holders were playing for second place which took away some of the interest. Meanwhile, three eligible Australians fronted in 2025 but just one found its way to Ellerslie this time, also taking away some interest.

One thing remained the same and that is the prize-money payout to the winner which remained at $1.2 million despite a gross increase of $500,000 over 2025, to $4 million. The claim that the NZB Kiwi is the richest race for three-year-olds in the Southern Hemisphere is true but the winner’s share is not.

Regular racing sees the winner receiving about 55 per cent of the stake but the percentage for the winner of the Kiwi is just 30 per cent. Ka Ying Rising’s share of The Everest (Gr 1, 1200m) was $7,549,000 of the $20 million, or 37.75 per cent. Leading the way among races for three-year-olds is the $1.82 million awarded to the winner of the Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m), or 60.6 per cent of the total.

The 2027 edition of The Kiwi will be the last of the current three-year cycle in which slot holders were entitled to use, sell or trade their slot. If the concept is continued, from 2028 there may need to be a prize-money tweak two to attract more Australian-based runners to strengthen the field.

Residual class

Exactly one year ago Damask Rose (Savabeel) took out the inaugural NZB Kiwi from Australian-based challenger Evaporate (Per Incanto) and these two started at Flemington: Damask Rose in the Matron Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) and Evaporate in the All Star Mile (Gr 1, 1600m). Both acquitted themselves very well. Damask Rose ran her best race since transferring to Victoria while Evaporate gave Tom Kitten (Harry Angel) all sorts of bother over the last 150m, losing narrowly. Both runners are in peak form and a major win is close.
