A healthy buying bench has been spotted inspecting yearlings around the complex ahead of the revamped two-day Magic Millions Gold Coast March Yearling Sale which gets underway on Thursday.

A total of 447 yearlings (508 less 61 withdrawals) are scheduled to go through the ring as this year’s renewal arrives with a refreshed format, with non-QTIS yearlings included for the first time.

What's On

The change is designed to broaden the catalogue and enhance its appeal to local, interstate and international buyers, while still maintaining the strong incentive structure that has traditionally underpinned the sale.

In total, progeny by 94 individual stallions are represented. The catalogue is headed by locally based sires Better Than Ready (More Than Ready) with 56 lots and Spirit Of Boom (Sequalo) with 26. A wide mix of proven and emerging stallions also feature, including Alabama Express (Redoute’s Choice), All Too Hard (Casino Prince), Capitalist (Written Tycoon), Home Affairs (I Am Invincible), Maurice (Screen Hero), So You Think (High Chaparral), The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice) and Zousain (Zoustar), among others.

Of the 447 yearlings catalogued, 219 are fully paid or first-payment QTIS eligible, alongside 194 BOBS-eligible yearlings, 33 VOBIS Sires lots, 11 VOBIS Silver entries and one Westspeed entrant. All yearlings are also eligible for nomination to the lucrative Magic Millions Race Series.

Despite mixed feedback from vendors regarding traffic in the lead-up, those in attendance include Peter Moody and Wylie Dalziel, Bruce Slade, Will Freedman, Macedon Racing, Paul Moroney and Catheryne Bruggeman, Suman Hedge, Will Johnson and Craig Rounsefell.

The catalogue has also drawn new interstate participation, with 13 vendors from outside Queensland represented this year, including Alma Vale Thoroughbreds, Blue Gum Farm, Newhaven Park Stud, North Bloodstock and Valiant Stud.

Magic Millions managing director Barry Bowditch believes the expanded catalogue and broader vendor base have helped position the sale well heading into the two days of trading.

“We thought vendors could do with another sale, and we thought bolstering this sale with interstate horses would give the Queensland breeder more exposure on their yearlings instead of it just being seen as a Queensland sale,” Bowditch told ANZ News.

“It's always been a tougher sale to get interstate buyers to. We've extended the catalogue, it’s bigger than what it was last year. We feel like we've added more horses at all levels of the market. I think there's some good prospects at the lower end, middle end, and higher end. So I feel as if we've filled all voids of the market and, from a catalogue perspective and physically speaking, we're in good shape leading into the next two days.

“I think it's a buyer's bench that builds upon itself each day as you're closer to the sale. Like any sale, from a Queensland perspective they will come in from now until the sale. So it'll get busier coming into the morning and then into when Lot 1 enters the ring.

“In saying that, from our booking perspective it's acceptable. It is still a sale that, from an interstate perspective, will take a while to latch on and become a regular on the calendar. But we're pleased with the interstate buyers and the international buyers we have here. You could always have more, but from a local perspective we're satisfied that we've got a similar number to what we've had in years gone by.”

Bowditch said the timing of the March sale allowed vendors to present horses that may have benefited from additional preparation time after the major early-season auctions.

“I think there's a good number of horses at all levels. On pedigree, I find this a really good mid-range sale. That gives those breeders that have got a horse that needed that extra month or two months that timing without them having to hold it too long to let it grow out and be ready for a sale.

“On type, there are plenty of nice horses here. There's something that fits everyone's needs, whether you're trading or buying to race, whether you're after a filly or colt. I think there's enough horses at all levels of the market for the market that we have here to buy what they need to buy, and I feel like it's probably - if there's a sale that looks like it's going to offer value going into it - this is one that I feel will offer a lot of value for the market.”

The sale has proven a productive hunting ground in recent years, producing stakes winners including Hidden Wealth (Better Than Ready), successful in this season’s Favelon Stakes (Listed, 1200m), and talented stakes-winning juvenile Itchintogo (Sun City).

Bowditch is confident the 2026 edition will again deliver graduates capable of competing on the big stage.

This is one that I feel will offer a lot of value for the market

Barry Bowditch

“Of the graduate success, I've got a lot of confidence again this year,” Bowdich said. “There will be plenty of nice horses and there'll be plenty of horses running in Magic Millions next year and in the right races come next year. You only have to look at this Saturday, the Jewel meeting's worth $1.8 million and a filly every Saturday runs for over $110,000 to the winner in Brisbane.

“The prize-money these horses race for is extraordinary. I think from an interstate perspective it's a busy year. It's a compressed sales catalogue this year. It's hard - they've obviously got business to run, they've got horses to sell. They can't be everywhere.

“But I think we've engaged with a lot of people that are either still to turn up or showing interest remotely, and we feel as if we've done all we can to give them all the information they need to do their work. We have got a good level of confidence that we've found a horse for anyone that's in the market to buy.”

Hunter Valley operation Attunga Stud will make its debut at the revamped Magic Millions March Yearling Sale this week, presenting a draft of 11 youngsters set to go under the hammer on the Gold Coast.

Owner Brian Nutt said the revised format of the sale had opened the door for operations like Attunga to participate, while also providing a more manageable timeline for preparing yearlings following the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale in January.

“Logistically, it suited us to do a sale like this when they opened it up to all-comers and it wasn't just a QTIS sale,” he said. “We could get home from the Magic Millions in January and it would give us seven or eight weeks to prepare these horses.”

Nutt believes the earlier timing could also prove beneficial for buyers, particularly traders looking to source horses for breeze-up sales.

“By the time you get to June - which is the other yearling sale that we used to attend - they're a lot bigger and a lot stroppier. We thought we'd give this a go. In this sale we've got seven colts, and it gives those traders a bit more time to work with them, if they want to go to a breeze-up or what have you, as opposed to bringing them up in June, then getting them broken in.

It suited us to do a sale like this when they opened it up to all-comers

Brian Nutt

“Everything's got to go right, you can't have a set back. Whereas this gives those traders an extra three or four months to work with the horses and not put as much pressure on them as they would have had to, if we had bought the draft of June. And those later foals especially, it gives them a bit more time.”

Despite welcoming the new format, Nutt admitted he was unsure whether the expanded catalogue would translate into a deeper buying bench.

“The foot traffic on Monday was pretty much nonexistent, because the weather was absolutely terrible. Yesterday, it was much improved, and today it's been very steady all day and we're really happy with it.

“We're not seeing a lot of interstate trainers here. There are a few Sydney agents here, Jim Clarke, Will Johnson and Jamie Walter. Those are just people that I've seen, so that is encouraging. It is a new format, and we'll just have to wait and see how it goes. I think it's gonna take some time to build momentum.”

Among the highlights of Attunga’s draft is Lot 214, a filly by Yarraman Park’s Brave Smash (Tosen Phantom) out of Jacqueline (Zoustar), a lightly raced placed half-sister to Listed winner Mrs Kipling (Exceed And Excel).

Lot 214: Brave Smash ex Jacqueline filly (Credit: Magic Millions)

Nutt said the filly had benefitted from the later sale date.

“We've always liked her, she was born in November, and I've always said to myself and clients, ‘I think you waste your time bringing a November foal to January,’” Nutt said. “So, it's given her an extra three months to develop, and I think we should reap rewards for that.

“If she was six weeks older, we would have brought her to January. It's given us another three months to allow her to mature. She is a particularly nice filly with a good temperament and she is a good walker. She's probably the pick of our fillies.”

Lot 90: Wild Ruler ex Capalina colt (Credit: Magic Millions)

Another notable offering is Lot 90, a colt by Newgate Farm freshman Wild Ruler (Snitzel) out of the unraced mare Capalina (Capitalist), herself a half-sister to the stakes winner Insurrection (Russian Revolution).

Wild Ruler has made a promising start to his stud career, with 13 runners producing three winners to date, including stakes-placed Savage Look and Silver Slipper Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) winner Stretan Ruler, who sits as an $11 chance for the Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m).

“Wild Ruler is doing a pretty good job as a stallion at the moment,” Nutt said.

“This colt is actually bred by someone who we think is one of the best breeders in Australia, Bob Hannon. Bob bred Shamus Award, Shaquero and Insurrection, and those horses are in the pedigree of this horse. When you buy something with his brand on them, you tend to have a really good chance of getting a really good racehorse.”

The sale gets underway at 10am AEST on Thursday March 12.

Unraced Holding Captive tops Inglis Digital sale

Holding Captive (Credit: Inglis)

A pair of progressive Ciaron Maher-trained three-year-olds spearheaded Wednesday’s Inglis Digital March (Early) Online Sale.

The unraced Holding Captive (Zousain) topped the auction, selling for $310,000.

Holding Captive was a $280,000 Easter Yearling Sale purchase for Maher and David Redvers and has trialled once for a comprehensive victory at Caulfield a fortnight ago.

Several of the ownership group wanted to capitalise and sell their shares so it was decided to offer Holding Captive via Inglis Digital, but Maher wasn’t prepared to let the gelding go, securing him online.

“Basically a few owners wanted to cash out of him, which is fine, but Ciaron still has great belief in the horse so to appease everyone, he was put online on Inglis Digital and this is the fairest outcome possible,’’ Maher’s head of bloodstock Will Bourne said.

“He’s won a trial nicely and he’ll head to the races next Wednesday and he’s a horse we have a really good opinion of.’’

The undefeated The Real Mahjong (Universal Ruler) was the sale’s second-top lot, realising $115,000 to the bid of Wan Bloodstock. He will continue his career in Hong Kong.

On The Real Mahjong, Bourne added: “He’s two from two and the ownership group decided to capitalise on that record and sell him.

“They bought another horse at Inglis Premier last week and we wish the new owners all the best with him.’’

Tuesday’s third-top lot was the juvenile filly Oregon Coast (Portland Sky), who sold to Queensland-based trainer David Vandyke for $100,000.

Part-owner Shane McGrath said: “I’m a big fan of Inglis Digital. We bought her as an Inglis weanling and saw an opportunity to capitalise on her race performance so offered her for sale.

“We’ve fielded plenty of calls from prospective buyers and trainers and I think Inglis Digital provides a viable and honest way of trading and we’re traders at heart and she’s a perfect example of that.’’

In total the March (Early) Sale grossed $2,507,300.

History against Lazzura in Coolmore Classic

Lazzura (Credit: Sportpix)

Classy mare Lazzura (Snitzel) makes up one half of a two-pronged attack for Chris Waller in Saturday’s Coolmore Classic (Gr 1, 1500m) at Rosehill, but history will be against the four-year-old in the Group 1. The five-time winner sits at the top of the handicap alongside Manaal (Tassort) with 58 kilograms, an impost no mare has carried to victory since the mighty Sunline (Desert Sun) lumped 60 kilograms to her brace of Coolmore wins in 2000 and 2002. There have been four mares successful since then with 57 kilograms – Zougotcha (Zoustar) (2024), Krone (Eurozone) (2021), Daysee Doom (Domesday) (2018) and Steps In Time (Danehill Dancer) (2014). Despite the challenge, Waller feels Lazzura is a quality mare and while both Zougotcha (2024) and Lady Shenandoah (Snitzel) (2025) were already Group 1 winners heading into the race, the 2023 Coolmore Classic was Espiona's (Zoustar) first and only major. "Those two were Group 1 winners before they got there, but she has been placed at that level," Waller said. "She's certainly not far off them. She was a little bit soft first-up and she has come on nicely. She had another trial last week and she has come through it well." James McDonald rides Lazzura from barrier eight, while stablemate Firestorm (Satono Aladdin) has drawn 12.

Waller pair ready for Peter Young Stakes

Meanwhile, Chris Waller will also have strong representation in Saturday’s Peter Young Stakes (Gr 2, 1800m) at Caulfield. The trainer will saddle Birdman (Free Eagle) and Buckaroo (Fastnet Rock) in the Group 2 event. Birdman will line up off the back of a win in the Blamey Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) last month, while Buckaroo, who finished second in the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) in the spring, resumed with a second-placed finish in the Futurity Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) on February 21. Ben Melham said the gelding's past two performances had shown Birdman was now fully acclimatised to Australian conditions and is expecting him to continue on an upward spiral. "It took him a little while to settle in and we're starting to see the best of him now," the jockey said. "I feel he's gone to a new level this preparation and can continue that upward trajectory. He's a happy horse and seems to have really fitted in here now." The Peter Young Stakes is a stepping stone for Birdman to a potential start in the Australian Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) at Flemington on March 28, a race Buckaroo is also headed to.

Bott hoping history can repeat for Vauban

Vauban (Galiway) will bid to start the autumn carnival in exactly the same way he began the last – by winning Saturday’s Sky High Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m) at Rosehill. Co-trainer Adrian Bott said the stable had opted to follow the same template as 12 months ago, at least for the European import’s first two runs. "It's the race he won twelve months ago, so we tried to do a similar prep for him," Bott, who trains in partnership with Gai Waterhouse, said. "He is well placed, and he seems in good shape." Vauban took out the Group 3 last year before finishing third behind Dubai Honour (Pride Of Dubai) and Duke De Sessa (Lope De Vega) in the Tancred Stakes (Gr 1, 2400m). Those two races are again on the agenda, while longer-term, a Brisbane winter carnival campaign will be entertained. "Last year we went to the Tancred, which he was a touch unlucky in. If he resumes as well as he did last year, all things being equal we will look at that race again," Bott said. "If not, there are other targets we can look at. He's not confirmed for a Sydney Cup path this time through, we might just keep him at that 2000, 2400 [metres] and then potentially look at some options in Queensland as well."

Big Wigs set to sport iconic colours in The Showdown

Less than two weeks after the death of Tony Santic’s legendary mare Makybe Diva (Desert Sun), his colours will be to the fore again when two-year-old colt Big Wigs contests The Showdown (1200m) at Caulfield this Saturday. Santic races Big Wigs (Gold Standard) with a group of friends who bought into him as a weanling when they were at lunch at his place two years ago. Owner Daniel Gangi said Santic is part of a WhatsApp group called "Big Wigs" that started a decade ago.“Fifteen blokes went to Hamilton Island for a trip to celebrate my 40th birthday. We named the group after a couple of big bosses in it who are real estate agents who we kept calling the Big Wigs,” Gangi told Racing.com. Gangi said Santic had been a great mate of his and his father Neil for more than 20 years. “About 5.30pm to 6pm [after the lunch] Santic said to us we should go out and look at the mares and their foals and pick out our favourite one and then we can race it with him,” Gangi said. “There were about 20 weanlings in the paddock with their mums and I picked this black horse by Gold Standard who was with his mum Nooks And Crannies. That’s the one, the best-looking horse you’ve got here I said to him,” Gangi said. “We then got back and negotiated with Santic. We valued the horse at about $70,000 and the Big Wigs syndicate bought half of him to race with Tony. Carrying Tony’s colours is a privilege. It would be great to win The Showdown in them. I get to race him with all my mates and family. It’s a really good bunch of people from all walks of life.”

Expensive purchase breaks maiden at Warwick Farm

Expensive colt The Next Episode (Snitzel) got off the mark at the second time of asking when he landed a 1000-metre contest at Warwick Farm on Wednesday. Trained by Ciaron Maher and sporting the colours of leading UK owner Phil Cunningham, the colt defeated Under Focus (Too Darn Hot) by a length under Jason Collett. Steel Will (I Am Invincible) was a further 0.6 lengths away in third. Bred by Widden Stud in partnership and offered in their draft at the Gold Coast, The Next Episode was bought by his trainer and ownership group from the Widden Stud draft for $2.8 million at last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. He is the first winner out of Group 3 winner Humma Humma (Denman), herself a half-sister to stakes score Tycoon Humma (Capitalist). “It was a tough watch for a bit, but he's got a very good turn of foot. We saw that in his trial last week, and Jason was well aware, so he just had to be patient and once he had the gap, it was very impressive,” said stable representative Johann Gerard-Dubord. “He's a very well-bred horse and was an expensive yearling. He's always been showing plenty of talent, that's why we got him ready for the Golden Gift last prep, but things didn't work out on the day. He was drawn badIy, got a bit of a squeeze at the start and pulled up just a bit off after the race. So we just gave him some time to mature and come right. He's a lovely horse going forward and is very talented. Great to get a win for a nice group of owners and it's Phil Cunningham's first win in Australia.” The Next Episode’s I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) half-brother will be offered by Widden Stud as Lot 341 at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale later this month.

Castlejohn looks set for big future

The Joe Pride-trained Castlejohn (Castelvecchio) made a winning debut in the $100,000 Super Maiden (1100m) at Warwick Farm on Wednesday. The three-year-old stayed on bravely to beat Metallic Cat (Pierata) by 0.3 lengths with Compensation (Written Tycoon) coming home a further 2.2 lengths away in third. “He’s always shown a lot, but he's been a little bit delicate, and we've had to tip him out before going to the races on several occasions,” said Pride. “It's nice to see him come here today and deliver on the promise. The best is definitely yet to come and he’s going to get much better as he gets older. There's a stack of improvement in this bloke, but it's not going to come overnight, it’s going to take time. He'll probably only have another run in this preparation and they we’ll look after him. I can see him training on to be a really nice four and five-year-old and probably stretching out over a little bit of ground as well.” A $140,000 Inglis Classic purchase from Riversdale Farm for Pride Racing, Castlejohn is a half-brother to Singapore stakes winner Golden Monkey (Star Turn).

Racing NSW fails to put ATC into administration

The Supreme Court of New South Wales (Credit: Getty Images)

The NSW Supreme Court has ruled Racing NSW did not have the legal authority to appoint an administrator to the Australian Turf Club.

Justice Francois Kunc found the regulator acted outside its powers when it designated Morgan Kelly to the role on December 15.

The court determined Racing NSW’s concerns centred on the ATC’s finances and corporate governance rather than matters directly related to the racing of horses under the Australian rules of racing.

Justice Kunc said those issues fell outside the scope of authority provided by the Thoroughbred Racing Act, meaning the appointment was “invalid and of no effect”.

He also found the decision relied on a “material misreading by Racing NSW of accounting information provided to Racing NSW by the ATC”, which constituted a jurisdictional error.

The judge described the power to appoint an administrator as a significant intervention into the affairs of a race club.

Racing NSW has been ordered to pay the ATC’s legal costs.

The regulator has flagged the possibility of an appeal, with the parties set to return to court for a directions hearing on March 20.

Satono Glow makes a big impression in Sydney

John O’Shea and Tom Charlton look to have a talented filly on their hands in the shape of Satono Glow (Satono Aladdin) after she got off the mark in a 1000-metre contest at Warwick Farm on Wednesday. The juvenile filly came from last to first to beat $1.2 million Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) filly Aryaam by 0.5 lengths. Chataigne (Brazen Beau) finished third, another three lengths away. Charlton expects Satono Glow can measure up to stakes company in the future. “She's got a good mind and that'll take her a long way in life and she's all natural. We're pretty pleased for everyone involved,” he said. “We think they've potentially got a black type filly, we hope, on our hands in time.” A $260,000 Karaka Book 1 purchase for O'Shea Charlton Racing and James Bester Bloodstock from the Windsor Park Stud draft, Satono Glow is a half-sister to the Group 2-placed Kitty Flash (Ace High) being the third winner from Electrode (Pins), a winning half-sister to Group 3 scorer So Wotif (Iffraaj) and stakes winner Bonniegirl (Darci Brahma).

Buggsy lands Sandown debut win

Buggsy (Harry Angel) gave the Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr stable a glimpse of his potential before being purchased at a Ready To Run sale last year. And the son of Harry Angel (Dark Angel) gave his trainers and connections a return on their investment when he scored a debut victory in the opening 1000-metre handicap at Sandown on Wednesday. Buggsy was purchased for $300,000 out of the Inglis Ready To Sale last October and was immediately given a break. Kent Jnr said that did the two-year-old the world of good and after a Caulfield Heath trial victory last month he was ready to make it to the races. Sent out the $2.20 favourite under Craig Williams, Buggsy scored a 1.3-length win from Money Honey (Capitalist) with Macedon Mission (The Mission) another 0.4 lengths away in third. "He was very well prepared by Hanover Lodge, but you can tell he lacks that race experience," Kent Jnr said. "He was off the bridle quite early but then had to dig deep and his best work was late. I would say that would be the shortest he wants to go. He came off the bridle early and was strong past the post and you would imagine 1100 [metres] or 1200 would suit him better."

Dirty Look impresses

Super Seth (Dundeel) will begin covering his first book of mares at Coolmore Australia following their big money deal with New Zealand’s Waikato Stud to buy the stallion and there was no better advert for his capabilities than Dirty Look, who got off the mark at Sandown-Hillside on Wednesday. Trained by Grahame Begg and ridden by Daniel Stackhouse, the three-year-old defeated Il Patrigno (D’Argento) by 0.3 lengths with Ten Warriors (Saxon Warrior) a further 0.1 lengths away in third. “We had a few tense moments there at the 200 metres, but it was a beautiful ride from Daniel and he rode her perfectly to instruction. He has a good understanding of her,” said stable representative Rebecca Shanks. “She’s a really lovely filly and we’ve always had a good opinion of her and it’s great to see her do that today for wonderful connections in Matt Bracchi and his team.”

Half Yours nearing return

Half Yours (Credit: Sportpix)

Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) and Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) hero Half Yours (St Jean) is progressing well towards his return to the races in April. The Tony and Calvin McEvoy-trained stayer is due to have his first run for 2026 in the All Aged Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Randwick on April 18, in a year that is likely to see him tackle the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) before potentially lining up for a shot at a second Melbourne Cup triumph. “He’s going really well, I couldn’t be happier with how he’s coming to hand,” Calvin McEvoy told Racing.com. “He’s come up quite quickly, been in work a little while now, we’ve just been slowly bringing him up to the mark. He’s a naturally very gifted athlete, he gets fit quickly and he’s going to have his first jump-out next Friday, so we’re really looking forward to it. All the signs are that he’s returned in terrific order.” McEvoy is realistic when it comes to his expectations of Half Yours in the All Aged Stakes, a race where he’s likely to meet top sprinter Jimmysstar (Per Incanto). “We’re not kidding ourselves that 1400 metres, and against horses that are going to be coming out of the TJ Smith, it’s going to be a very tough assignment for a Melbourne Cup winner returning, but if the ground is in the soft or heavy range, I think that will bring him right into it,” McEvoy said. If he can just be hitting the line strong, that’s all we will need to see.”

ATIEA award nominees announced

The shortlist has been announced for the 2026 Australian Thoroughbred Industry Employee Awards (ATIEA), recognising the outstanding people who work across Australia’s thoroughbred breeding and racing sectors. Winners will be announced at a ceremony on May 25 at the Sheraton Grand Mirage Resort on the Gold Coast. Formerly known as the Stud and Stable Staff Awards, the ATIEA honour the people whose work sustains the industry nationwide. Nominations were received from across the country, highlighting the depth of talent within the Australian thoroughbred workforce.“The nominations we received highlight the remarkable people working throughout Australia’s breeding farms, racing stables and industry organisations,” chair of the ATIEA shortlisting committee Mary Capuano said. “One of the most rewarding aspects of these awards is seeing colleagues and employers take the time to recognise someone whose work they truly value. These awards are about lifting each other up and acknowledging the dedication, horsemanship and care that so many individuals bring to their roles every day.” Click here to view the nominees.

Big industry players form black type advisory committee

A number of Australia's most respected racing and bloodstock figures have been revealed as members of a newly formed group that will help reform the country's divisive black type calendar.

Barry Bowditch, Sebastian Hutch, Antony Thompson, Andy Makiv, Adrian Hancock, Jon Freyer and Duncan Grimley make up the Black Type Advisory Group that has been charged with providing valuable independent feedback to the Racing Australia board on matters related to the overall program of Listed and Group races in Australia.

The BTAG has been formed to help Australia reclaim ownership of the black type calendar, which was last year taken over by the Asian Racing Federation owing to the pattern stalemate that has existed in Australia for several years.

Racing Australia chairman Rob Rorrison said the BTAG was an important step in the next step of the Australian black type list.

"We are delighted to have this highly credentialed group agree to provide their expertise at this critical time," Rorrison said.

"Their independent view will undoubtedly be of great value to both the PRAs and the Asian Pattern Committee as they consider the composition of the Australian black type list."

Bowditch and Hutch are the respective bosses of Australia's two major auction houses, Magic Millions and Inglis, Thompson runs Widden Stud and is also the chairman of Aushorse, while Makiv is managing director at Godolphin Australia.

Freyer is bloodstock manager at Arrowfield Stud, Hancock is a respected figure from South Australia who also works at Magic Millions, while Grimley is a breeder who has occupied key roles throughout the thoroughbred industry over several decades.

Anyone who holds roles at Racing Australia, any state principal racing authority or racing clubs were ineligible for consideration for the BTAG.

A date for the BTAG's first meeting is yet to be announced.

Group 1 on the horizon for Seize The Day

Connections have Group 1 goals in mind for Seize The Day (I Am Invincible) after the youngster recorded a smart second-up victory in a maiden over 1200 metres at Matamata on Wednesday. Ridden by stable jockey Opie Bosson, the Mark Walker and Sam Bergerson-trained juvenile built on his debut third as he quickened to lead at the 300 metres before going on to score by 2.7 lengths. “He’s a lovely colt and put it all together and showed it out there today,” said Bergerson. “He was probably a little bit keen, which is hopefully not a chink in his armour as we look to step up to 1400 metres in the Group 1 at Trentham, but he was really dominant up the straight and it was exciting to see.” Seize The Day will now attempt to emulate the feat of stablemate and Champion Two-Year-Old La Dorada (Super Seth) by landing the Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Trentham on Saturday 28. Owned by Te Akau 2025 Magic Colts Breeding Syndicate. Out of the placed Anabba (Danzig) mare Zimaretto, Seize The Day was purchased by David Ellis from the draft of Yarraman Park Stud for $600,000 at the 2025 Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Golden Eagle possible target for Well Written

A trip across the Tasman for a tilt at the $10 million Golden Eagle (1500m) at Randwick in October could be on the agenda for unbeaten filly Well Written (Written Tycoon). The Stephen Marsh-trained three-year-old took her tally to six when landing Saturday’s NZB Kiwi (RL,1500m) and while immediate plans remain unclear, connections have one eye on Sydney’s spring riches. Marsh reports that Well Written came through her nail-biting Kiwi win in good order and is now enjoying her own time out. “She pulled up well and had a couple of quiet days in the stable just to chill out, so she’s gone out for a very well-deserved spell,” the trainer said. “She’ll come back in before the weather gets too bad and to begin with we’ll just potter around with her. We haven’t talked seriously about any plans for next season and the only race in the back of our minds is the Golden Eagle in Sydney, but for now we’ll just let the dust settle.

Tricky draw for Super Photon

Well Written’s stablemate Super Photon (Super Seth) will have to overcome a potentially troublesome draw if he is to provide the Stephen Marsh stable with more weekend big-race success in this Saturday’s Japan Trophy (Gr 2, 1600m) at Tauranga. “He’s come up with a bad draw [12] and he’s up against a strong field, but he does have form on the track,” Marsh said. “We’ve booked Warren Kennedy to ride him, and I’m just hoping the weather doesn’t crack up. He has won on soft ground but his best form is on top of the ground. He’s in good order though, his final bit of strong work this [Wednesday] morning was good.”

Rosso (Camelot) will head for a deserved break following the gelding’s failure to handle track conditions at Ellerslie in last weekend’s Auckland Cup (Gr 2, 3200m). The imported stayer enjoyed a smooth passage on the fence under expatriate Kiwi jockey Michael Dee before drifting out of contention in the straight to beat just one of his 17 rivals home. That disappointing outcome aside, the imported son of Camelot (Montjeu), who started his career in his native Ireland, has made impressive strides during his first New Zealand campaign. “He couldn’t win a midweeker in Melbourne and has gone from there to being favourite for the Wellington and Auckland Cups, so he’s come a very long way in a short time,” said Michael Pitman, who trains Rosso in partnership with son Matthew. Reflecting on the Ellerslie disappointment, Pitman said: “He just didn’t handle the track at all. We couldn’t have wished for a better run, but Mick said when he let him down, he chopped and changed legs about three times. The track was just too hard for him, so he’ll go out for six weeks now.”

Portelli keen on Verona Rose’s Coolmore chance

Gary Portelli is confident Verona Rose (Castelvecchio) - his $40,000 yearling who’s now worth close to $3 million - has a strong chance of boosting her value still further by becoming her sire’s third individual elite-level winner in Saturday’s Coolmore Classic (Gr 1, 1500m).

Plucked from the barn of breeders Arrowfield Stud at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale of 2023, the bargain buy mare has already reaped connections more than $700,000 in prize-money, ticking past that threshold with her dominant last-start win in Randwick’s Guy Walter Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m).

And Portelli now believes she’s well primed for further success at Rosehill on Saturday, where she’ll attempt to join Aeliana and El Castello as a top tier winner - among six stakes victors - for Arrowfield’s $49,500 sire Castelvecchio (Dundeel).

Portelli would have preferred Verona Rose to receive 55 kilograms rather than her 56 kilograms for the quality handicap mares’ event. But the knowledge his four-year-old can adapt racing styles depending on her barriers has the Warwick Farm-based trainer extremely positive about Saturday’s assignment, for which Craig Williams again takes the ride.

“This morning’s work was as good a piece of work as you’ll ever see,” Portelli, who galloped the mare with her three-year-old stablemate Queen Of Clubs (Maurice), told ANZ News on Tuesday.

“It’s the sort of work you’d want to see going into a big race, and she’s ready to rock and roll this weekend.

“I’m pretty confident. I would’ve liked to have seen her get a kilo lighter in the weights, but then again, I believe barriers mean more than weights these days - you’ve got to be in the sweet spot in the run - so I’ll be hoping she draws well on Wednesday.

“But at this stage - you don’t want to get too cocky - but you know she runs out the distance solidly, since she’s won over a mile, and she’s in great form, so I think she deserves her place amongst the favourites, put it that way.”

It’s the sort of work you’d want to see going into a big race, and she’s ready to rock and roll this weekend

Gary Portelli

Bookmakers on Wednesday had Verona Rose at $10 in a market headed by the Chris Waller-trained Lazzura (Snitzel) at $4.80. Brad Widdup’s Savyv Hallie (Hellbent) sat on the second line of the betting at $5.00.

Portelli reported insurers had been led to reassess Verona Rose after her second stakes victory in the Guy Walter.

“They’ve insured her to the value of $2 million now,” he said, “but they tell me she’s probably worth closer to $3 million, since she’s still racing for prize-money.”

All of which makes the mare’s progression the stuff of fairytales.

Portelli was inspired to buy three products of Castelvecchio’s first crop - partly because he was still stung by not buying Castelvecchio himself as a yearling. Whilst he’d intended to purchase the colt, a timing mix-up at that Classic sale of 2018 meant he was outside inspecting a yearling for clients when Castelvecchio went through the ring.

But while the two Castelvecchio colts Portelli bought in 2023 didn’t amount to much, the cheap filly he picked up has transpired to be Verona Rose, a dual stakes winner so far, and with much more on the horizon now the once skinny filly has grown into a far stronger mare.

She’s the third foal out of Minamya (Makfi), a daughter of an outstanding broodmare sire who Arrowfield imported after she’s won over 1900 metres at Deauville.

Second dam Minatyla (Linamix) won two French stakes races up to 2400 metres, and was a sister to Manighar. That grey gelding ran seventh and fifth in the Melbourne Cups (Gr 1, 3200m) of 2010 and 2011 for Luca Cumani, before staying in Australia with Peter Moody and claiming three Group 1s on the bounce - the Australian Cup (Gr 1, 2000m), the Ranvet Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) and The BMW (Gr 1, 2400m).

Minamya’s second foal - and first named - fetched a handsome $425,000 at Inglis Easter. Trained by Ron Quinton as Watch My Girl (Maurice), she would win five times, twice in Sydney city class, and run fifth in last year’s Millie Fox Stakes (Gr 2, 1300m) before retirement - and an unsuccessful cover by I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) last spring.

Despite Watch My Girl’s yearling price, Portelli thought he’d be able to swoop on the yearling Verona Rose “as a cheapie”.

“I said at the sale, ‘We’re going to be buying an Oaks-type filly this year’, and she was the one we thought would bring the least amount of money, because she had a stayer’s pedigree,” he said.

A lot of our loyal owners, bought small shares, and it’s great to see them rewarded

Gary Portelli

“So we targeted her, thinking we’d get her cheap. I’d been told the reserve was $40,000, so I landed on that, and there wasn’t another bid.

“She sold very, very quickly. A big syndicate of people, a lot of our loyal owners, bought small shares, and it’s great to see them rewarded.”

An amount of late blooming and some less expected setbacks - such as cutting a leg when becoming cast in her box one day - meant Verona Rose wouldn’t race at two.

“She was a bit quirky early on, and wasn’t very accommodating when it came to trackwork,” Portelli said, “but in time she came good.”

Starting as a lean type who’d take weeks to build condition then lose it through one race - after which she’d “look like a greyhound” according to her trainer - Verona Rose won on debut as a three-year-old over 1300 metres at Kembla Grange in November 2024, as a little fancied $21 chance.

That came on the same day Portelli’s resident star mare Kimochi (Brave Smash) took the Rupert Clarke Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Caulfield, and it was a fortuitous marker for her trainer. While Kimochi would have to be retired due to injury after four more winless runs, Verona Rose would surge to take her place as the star of Portelli’s compact stable.

Tipped out for a spell following that debut win - in the vain hope of putting more meat on her bones - Verona Rose more strongly hinted at her abilities with a first-up victory at Wyong in a Benchmark 64 over 1350 metres, coming from well back on the turn into the short home straight to score by 1.17 lengths.

Kerrin McEvoy was aboard that day and zealously kept the ride for the filly’s next, sterner, test. Sent out with a small amount of support as a $14 shot in the Kembla Grange Classic (Gr 3, 1600m), and jumping from gate ten of 15, Verona Rose and McEvoy looked hopelessly positioned when 14th entering the straight. But the slender filly burnt down the outside to score in the last bound by 0.2 lengths.

Her ability to take up a position now is good. That makes it a lot easier for us. We’re not a one trick pony like some horses

Gary Portelli

Verona Rose’s trajectory then hit something of a flat spot. She wouldn’t win again in her next seven starts, though they included meritorious efforts in strong company.

She ran fourth in the Vinery Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m), was tried at distance but couldn’t see out the trip when sixth in the ATC Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m), and in her next campaign, last September, ran a 0.97 length second in Newcastle’s Tibbie Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m).

But deeper into that preparation, the spring four-year-old showed her class again by taking Flemington’s $355,000 Inglis Bracelet (1600m) for fillies and mares - under equal topweight of 58.5 kilograms in the set weights and penalties affair - after Williams had successfully pursued his second ride on the mare.

After a short summer break, a stronger Verona Rose resumed last month with a third in Randwick’s Triscay Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) under Ashley Morgan.

Williams then again claimed the ride in the Guy Walter, and partnered Verona Rose to victory as a $5 second elect, beating $3.40 favourite Manaal (Tassort) by 0.83 lengths.

The canny Williams - who also rode Kimochi to her Rupert Clarke success - has found a key to Verona Rose. In both the Inglis Bracelet and the Guy Walter, he stoked her up early to claim a far more forward position than her usual rearward spot, travelling in the one-one.

Both times, those early exertions have left Verona Rose without her customary burst of acceleration, but instead she has shown tremendous power and determination to grind home in the straight and beat off her challengers.

This Saturday, with Williams aboard, she makes her fourth attempt at the Group 1 that would lead to her value as a broodmare skyrocketing.

Not only does Portelli believe she’s far better poised - mentally and physically - for this latest assault than in the past three, he’s heartened that she can adapt to whatever barrier she draws in the large Coolmore field.

“If she draws wide she has the capacity to go back and unwind that great finishing burst. But if she draws low, she’s shown she can also hunt up and do it that way,” he said.

“Her ability to take up a position now is good. That makes it a lot easier for us. We’re not a one trick pony like some horses.

“It all comes down to the tempo. If there’s no tempo, you’ll probably see Savvy Hallie lead, and if we draw close to her, we’ll keep her in our sights.

“But Verona Rose can also go back. Plus I’ve got a jockey on that makes very few mistakes. I don’t have to worry about instructions. And the mare has a massive finish on her. We’ve seen her come from unbelievable positions to win. So if she draws wide, I’d have no problems seeing her three-wide with cover.”

Portelli now also has Verona Rose’s half-brother by Hitotsu (Maurice) in his stable, having paid $100,000 to secure him from Arrowfield’s draft at Magic Millions Gold Coast in January.

Minamya bore a Castelvecchio colt last October, but sadly died a month later.

ANZ News

Of the many reasons to send a mare to Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt), one in particular received another huge boost on the weekend when Paradoxium (Extreme Choice) won the Todman Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m).

Newgate Farm’s $330,000 stallion is of course a siring sensation, despite his well known fertility problems, with Paradoxium one of his 18 stakes winners from 148 runners at a thumping 12.16 per cent stakes winners to runners.

But he’s working especially well with mares from a line of that outstanding broodmare sire, More Than Ready (Southern Halo).

Since Extreme Choice has only averaged 25 runners through each of his six racing crops to date, the sample sizes for his nicks aren’t huge, but this one forms a compelling argument.

Extreme Choice over More Than Ready mares has hatched five winners from six runners - two of them at stakes level. One is Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) hero Knight’s Choice, the other the dual Group winner and Group 1 placed Tiger Of Malay, now an Extreme Choice barnmate at Newgate.

More Than Ready’s sons are showing great promise with Extreme Choice as well. Extreme Choice over Better Than Ready has just the one runner - Paradoxium - for a neat 100 per cent stakes winners to runners ratio. Putting the stallion over Sebring has four victors from six runners, including one stakes placegetter in Tessa’s Choice.

Those stats echo the strong results for Extreme Choice’s sire Not A Single Doubt (Redoute’s Choice) over More Than Ready, which has realised six stakes winners from 42 runners at 14 per cent - the stallion’s equal second best stakes winners to runners nick for more than eight runners. The pick of the nick is its (dual) Group 1 winner, Miracles Of Life.

It was these kinds of workings that led breeding pals Brian McGuire, Brian Clarke and Collum McCullagh to send their Better Than Ready mare Paredo to Extreme Choice in the spring of 2022.

They’d come together to buy Paredo privately off the track after a 15-start career for Toby and Trent Edmonds that netted two wins, including one at Doomben, and a Listed placing at the same track.

And there was other evidence - aside from the Not A Single Doubt - More Than Ready nick - that pointed the way to Extreme Choice in her first spring at stud.

McCullagh worked with trainer Peter Snowden at the time, and in the spring of 2022 he had a two-year-old colt by the stallion showing great promise ahead of his first start.

Don Corleone won at Sydney’s first official two-year-old barrier trials, and would soon launch a glittering first season in which - aside from a winning debut at Randwick - he would run elite-level seconds in the Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) and ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m), either side of a meritorious fourth in the Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m).

And he happened to be out of Paredo’s half-sister, the also stakes-placed Snipzu (Snippetson), who’s also left another juvenile Group 1 placegetter in The Drinks Cart (Unencumbered).

Paredo’s second dam was Briscay (Marscay), one of the more successful mares of breeder Geoff White, having thrown Ranvet Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) winning gelding Arkady (Myocard) and the dams on three stakes winners. Third dam Brianne (Knightly Manner) was another stakes producer.

“That Not A Single Doubt - More Than Ready cross had worked quite well historically,” McGuire tells It’s In The Blood. “Plus Don Corleone was showing a lot of promise, so we wanted to throw the dice and breed a horse on a very similar cross.

“Plus it was a good physical mating. She was a nice, compact, good style of mare with a good head, and she fitted Extreme Choice nicely. Even though he’s on the smaller side, he has a good bit of length to him.”

So Extreme Choice had been lined up for Paredo. Now, to breed a three-quarter sibling to Don Corleone, she just had to get in-foal.

The three friends would need luck on their side - more even than usual for Extreme Choice. This would be, statistically speaking, his worst season for conception.

A bout of colic at the start of the spring meant he didn’t start covering mares until the middle of October. After that, things still weren’t great, with his fertility rate by season’s end just 39.6 per cent. Compare that with 2024 when, with a clean run and a few more tricks of the trade learnt, it came in at a career-high 63 per cent.

Luckily for the three friends, they struck it lucky. Now with their mare in-foal, it was time to cash in.

Extreme Choice (Credit: Newgate)

“The intention was always to sell her on - that was the end goal,” McGuire says. “Extreme Choice pregnancies were rare, particularly in that year when he’d missed the first half of the season. It was just going to be too juicy a proposition to pass up.”

Paredo was offered in-foal at the Inglis Chairman’s sale of 2023 via Segenhoe Stud’s draft. She was passed in initially, but a deal was done to sell her for $475,000, to Silverdale Farm.

McGuire stayed in for a share, meaning he’s now among the breeders of Paradoxium along with Silverdale owner Steve Grant and his long-term associate Ken Lowe, of Carpe Diem fame.

Paredo’s purchase soon worked out swimmingly for her new ownership group. In the spring of 2023, Don Corleone added two more stakes placings, which would ultimately count towards a stud deal. Two days after the second of those placings, the group had their desired result when Paredo smoothly birthed a colt. He was one of just 41 live foals for Extreme Choice born in 2023.

And when that colt was being prepared for sale a year later, another one named Private Harry (Harry Angel) made a winning debut. The Nathan Doyle-trained sprinter would keep on winning, in a five-race stretch culminating in Rosehill’s The Galaxy (Gr 1, 1100m).

This was a boon to Paredo’s owners since Private Harry was out of another daughter of the mare’s dam Pilgrim (Danehill), in Happy Pilgrim (Congrats).

Private Harry hadn’t won that Group 1 by the time Paredo went to the Gold Coast Magic Millions sale of 2025, but his first four victories effected a handy pedigree upgrade.

“He was a really good first foal,” says Silverdale’s Rob Petith. “She was a lovely, kind mare, and the colt was very straightforward to prepare. He had a really good, even, workmanlike temperament, and he appeared to enjoy his work.”

Ridgmont’s Mitch Cunningham made one bid and snared the colt - for $400,000 - in cahoots with trainer Bjorn Baker and his main bloodstock agent Jim Clarke.

Little more than a year later, the colt is on the verge not just of being a lucky strike for a group of breeders patronising Extreme Choice, but an example of hitting the jackpot.

After winning two of his three starts, Paradoxium is a $5 favourite to become Extreme Choice’s second Slipper winner, after Stay Inside, just ahead of another Baker-Ridgmont colt in Warwoven (Sword Of State) at $6.

Victory for Paradoxium on Saturday week would be extremely timely for Paredo’s owners, who’ll offer her second foal through Silverdale’s draft at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale later in March, a filly by champion sire Zoustar (Northern Meteor).

That filly’s page has also been updated with Wintery (Frosted), a granddaughter of Snipzu, winning and being Group 3 placed in Melbourne, and by Hot And High (Too Darn Hot), who also descends from Briscay, and has won all three starts in Perth, including in Listed class.

Paredo now has a filly by I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) at foot, and is carrying again to Zoustar.

Further scanning Paradoxium’s pedigree, the colt does have double Danehill, but at least it’s of the statistically superior gender-balanced variety, at 4m x 3f, via Extreme Choice’s grandsire Redoute’s Choice, and as Paradoxium’s second damsire. Plus the perils of doubling Danehill seem to be fading, the deeper he recedes into pedigrees.

“Double Danehill is becoming more prevalent,” McGuire says. “In fact, we saw a couple of runners in the Slipper last year with three lines of Danehill.

“The fact this was gender balanced, and at four-by-three, meant it didn’t concern us.”

The only other bit of in-breeding Paradoxium carries is Danzig (Northern Dancer) at 5m x 5m, 4m. He’s there as Danehill’s sire, but also as the sire of Better Than Ready’s damsire, Agnes World.

That most influential of mares, Natalma (Native Dancer), is the most repeated female in the pedigree, with nine mentions from columns six to nine, while Nearco (Pharos) is the dominant stallion, with 18 spots.

Caspar Fownes fires in Happy Valley treble to extend Hong Kong trainers’ championship lead

Caspar Fownes’ quest for a fifth Hong Kong trainers’ championship continued to gain momentum with a treble at Happy Valley on Wednesday night (11 March) as he stretched his lead to five wins over nearest rival David Hayes.

Continuing blistering form after a city circuit double last Wednesday (4 March), Fownes struck with Elegant Life (Smart Missile) in the Class 5 Conduit Handicap (1000m) under Luke Ferraris, Golden Brilliant (Sweynesse) in the first section of the Class 4 Hatton Handicap (1650m) for Alexis Badel and Somelovefromabove (Lonhro) in the first section of the Class 4 Breezy Handicap (1200m) for James Orman.

With 53 of 88 meetings completed, Fownes (42 wins) leads David Hayes (37), Mark Newnham (36), Danny Shum (36), Francis Lui (34) and John Size (29).

“I'm happy, all I can do is present my horse well and you need a lot of luck in this game. I know how to win a championship, that's one thing I can tell you,” Fownes, Hong Kong champion trainer in 2006/07, 2008/09, 2013/14 and 2020/21, said.

“I've got my game face on, and I'll be doing my best. I know my target and I'm just trying to have fun along the way. There will be a lot of guys with a lot of winners coming up. Everyone has got a chance - everyone has a full stable and you just have to keep knocking them in. If you get a quiet patch, it's very easy for someone to catch up.

“You can never write off John [Size] - he's always capable of a spate of winners in a short period as he's done so many times in his career. You've got David, Francis, Danny and Mark; there's so many in with a chance, but they have to chase me, so I'll say good luck.”

Elegant Life provided Ferraris with his fourth win in five rides across the past two meetings at Happy Valley, as the young South African added to a treble at the course on March 4 and took his seasonal tally to 26 wins.

“It’s good to get some momentum up and going again after what was a really dry spell – I just have to get more support,” the young South African said. “That’s the main thing, when you lose a bit of support, you do feel it.

“So, it’s good to be going to the races on horses with chances and it’s good to be putting them away.”

Hopeful of winning the Class 3 Lyttelton Handicap (1800m) and earning a ratings rise and securing a start with China Win (Super Seth) in the BMW Hong Kong Derby (Listed, 2000m) on 22 March, David Hayes’s hopes were dashed when Tony Cruz-trained Fallon (127lb) swept to a neck victory over his charge.

Hayes had earlier vaulted into second place in the trainers’ championship when Metro Power (Overshare) claimed victory in the Class 3 Bonham Handicap (1200m).

Preparing to unleash Emblazon (Zoustar) in the BMW Hong Kong Derby, Cody Mo prevailed with Lucky McQueen (All Too Hard), who finished powerfully to land the third section of the Class 3 Breezy Handicap under Matthew Poon.

Sight Hermoso (Credit: HKJC)

Three-year-old Win Method (Written Tycoon) grabbed a second win for Danny Shum and Lyle Hewitson in the second section of the Class 4 Hatton Handicap (1650m) before John Size’s Sight Hermoso (Headwater) clinched the Class 3 Craigengower Cricket Club Challenge Cup Handicap (1200m).

Making his debut at Happy Valley, Sight Hermoso gave Dylan Browne McMonagle the tenth victory of the Irishman’s short-term stint.

“He’s [Browne McMonagle] come in and made an impact immediately. He's a very strong rider, he's still a little bit heavy, but with that comes the strength. He's going to be a good addition to the riding ranks if he comes back in the winter time,” Size said.

Team Team Folks (Super Seth) posted his second course and distance win for Jimmy Ting and Vincent Ho with success in the second section of the Class 4 Breezy Handicap (1200m) before Orman posted his second double in two meetings aboard Metro Power.

Hong Kong racing continues at Sha Tin on Sunday (15 March).
