A colt by Widden Stud resident Zousain (Zoustar) looks bound for Hong Kong after he topped the second and final day of trade at the Magic Millions March Yearling Sale when knocked down to Campton Racing and Stable 23 for $250,000.

At the close of trade on Friday, Magic Millions reported that 294 of the 443 at a clearance rate of 66 per cent. The turnover rose 31 per cent year-on-year to $10,908,500. The average price lifted 6.5 per cent to $36,944, while the median finished at $27,500, up ten per cent.

What's On

Bowditch described the market as selective, with buyers strongly favouring the right types.

“I thought today was very strong for the right horse,” he told ANZ News “Horses that were well inspected, that had good vetting and suited a trade market were very easy to sell. Unfortunately, there's no discretion in a selective market for horses that are a little bit off the pace or have anything in its x-rays or anything from a veterinary perspective, so that's slowed down the clearance rate a little bit.

“I think we're not immune to the fact that there are floods all over Queensland at the moment. There's scepticism around diesel prices or petrol prices at the moment, so we copped a bit of that today. People we were speaking to that are normally here and normally show interest, it's not as if they're not interested in the sale and not interested in buying horses, but they're just sort of sitting back for the moment and seeing what the next few weeks means for them.”

Despite the soft clearance rate, the company’s managing director Barry Bowditch said he was looking towards the positives.

“You can take a lot of positives. The gross is up well over $2 million, we've sold a lot more horses than what we did this time last year and the average is up.

“We'll look at what we do from a selection perspective for this sale next year, but I think fundamentally opening it up has worked. I think it's got more interstate interest in the sale.

“The vendors that are here from interstate have been relatively pleased on the whole with their results. We'll look to bolster this sale and continue with a very similar format and build confidence about what's going on here in Queensland. I think the QTIS system is underestimated when you look at what horses race for tomorrow at the Gold Coast, or QTIS in general.

“We need to ensure every buyer knows that this is where a QTIS horse's career starts and get as many of them here as possible. Disappointed in the clearance rate, but all other numbers we're pleased with.”

The expanded format of the sale, which included non-QTIS yearlings for the first time, also appeared to attract broader interstate participation, something Bowditch believes will help the sale grow in the coming years.

“If you can take a 25 to 30 per cent increase in price year on year for a sale like this, it's actually pleasing, but you'd like to have gone about it in a different way and had a better clearance rate.

“We think this has got huge potential. I think the timing of it works, especially when the sales season isn't as compressed - there's a real place for it. There's a lot of vendors down south that find it very convenient. They can do their horses for the early sales, go home, focus on this and then focus on the later sales.

“So it works well and we'll work with Racing Queensland and the Queensland breeders first and foremost, but then once we have a level of confidence from them we can go to our interstate vendors and try and build this catalogue.

“If you had decent colts here, the trade market was strong. I didn't hear a buyer that was here say they wouldn't be back next year. I think that'll grow on itself and snowball and we'll find this as a sale that people may well have found very good value, therefore next year more people will come mining here.”

Consigned by Toowoomba-based Robyn Wise, the top-seller is the second foal from the unraced mare So Cait (Smart Missile), herself a half-sister to Lindsay Park’s star juvenile of last season Shining Smile (Spirit Of Boom), who won five of his seven starts at two, including three at stakes level.

The family also includes Champion sprinter turned Coolmore Stud sire Starspangledbanner (Choisir) and Group 1 winner Amicus (Fastnet Rock).

Catalogued as Lot 416, bidding opened at $50,000 before quickly climbing to $250,000, with trainer Adam Campton ultimately securing the highly sought-after colt.

“There was plenty of interest in the beautiful colt,” Campton told ANZ News. “I knew we’d have to be pretty strong, but thankfully a great client over in Hong Kong was lucky to support us and we got the job done.”

The trainer admitted the colt stretched towards the upper-end of their budget but said his physical presence made the decision worthwhile.

“I don't know how much was left in the juice,” he said. “We have to squeeze a bit out, but a beautiful colt, I don't need to describe how good he was. Every time he got him out, he just had swagger about him. He had a beautiful walk. I love the Zousains, I’ve got a number of them and a heap of them have gone to Hong Kong already.”

Campton added that the colt’s pedigree and the reputation of his vendor further strengthened his resolve to secure him.

“He's a well-bred colt,” he said. “He's a nice horse from a great farm in Robyn. She produces her horses well time and time again, and she's got another beautiful colt there. Hopefully he shows us how good he is.

“She's [Robyn] a beauty, too. I remember when I first started training, she was really good to me, and she gives you the time of the day, and she's honest too. She tells you a lot about her horses. She knows the horses from top to bottom, and she's a very good horsewoman, and you want to obviously buy good horses from good people.”

In what many purchasers described as a ‘buyer-friendly market’, Campton said he was pleased with the sale and the horses they have secured, signing for five lots either outright or in partnership for a combined $441,500.

He said: “It's a good sale. I love buying from Magic Millions. Barry and his team do a terrific job. They have been very supportive of me since I've come back from Hong Kong and started training. Obviously now I've been training for a few years and got some nice stock coming through and it's up to me and the team now to get them to win races, or winning trials, wherever they're going to go, and the future's pretty bright.”

The second highlight of the day came with Lot 295, a colt by Better Than Ready (More Than Ready) who was secured by Gollan Racing and Archer Park Racing for $200,000.

Bred and sold by Kynoch Thoroughbreds, the colt is a brother to Gollan’s $1.7 million earner and multiple stakes winner Hidden Wealth, who was also bred and sold by the farm.

Gollan Racing general manager Andrew Dunemann said the team had been taken with the colt from their first inspection.

“He was one that we had to have,” Dunemann told ANZ News. “Obviously, we've had great success and Hidden Wealth. It was quite ironic, when we first walked in on Sunday, he was the first horse that I saw walk in. We didn't know who it was, and we both said ‘that looks like Hidden Wealth.’ Anyway, we followed him and he was his full brother, so it was pretty cool.

“He is probably a little stronger version of Hidden Wealth, so we were thrilled to get him at $200,000. It's a little bit in this sale, but for quality, he will repay himself in the future.”

Dunemann confirmed the colt would race in the same colours as his older brother.

“The Archer Park boys are in again so that's great, I spoke to Chris Wessel and they're great supporters of us and have been for a long time. They jumped straight in on him, so they’ll take half, he’ll race in their colours and we'll syndicate the rest to our owners. So all in all, a really good result for us.”

Dunemann also noted the sale presented great opportunities for buyers, with the stable outright securing six lots in total for a combined $398,000.

“It's a great sale. We started here on Sunday, and I think the quality is as good as last year. I think if you look and you try hard enough and you're happy to buy in all brackets, there's enough horses here for everyone.

“We've bought well this year, I think it is down a little bit in terms of, it's more a buyers market this year without a doubt. Something that you paid $120,000 for last year, you’re paying $80,000 this year. So it's definitely a buyer's market. We'll keep buying them because it is a buyer's market and it’s great value for our clients.”

Kynoch Thoroughbreds principals Jennie Fraser and Don Loomis, who breed only a small number of horses each year, were delighted to see the colt well received by the buying bench.

The colt is out of Miss Stash (Bradbury’s Luck), whom Fraser trained to five career wins.

“I think he was worth it, but we were happy to get that because his brother did so well,” Loomis said. “We’re very relieved, it is a tough sale so we didn't know where we were going to be, but we got what we wanted so that's the main thing. It is a huge relief because you put a lot of work into it.”

“We have another brother coming next year, and I think he is better than this one, hopefully next year but we may keep him and race him as we do train and race our own.”

Morning Briefing

Australia

Nine for Tivaci

Waikato Stud sire Tivaci (High Chaparral) registered his ninth individual stakes winner when Feminino (3 f ex Magazine by Savabeel) dug deep to land Friday’s Kembla Grange Classic (Gr 3, 1600m) at Kembla Grange. Ridden by Tim Clarke for trainers Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, the filly stuck her neck out in the final strides to prevail by 0.1 lengths over Burn The Sky (Zoustar), with Profoundly (Farnan) just 0.2 lengths further adrift in third. Feminino was bred by Waikato Stud and sold as part of their 2025 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale draft, bringing $320,000 to the bid of Curran Bloodstock. She is the first winner out of the stakes-placed Savabeel (Zabeel) mare Magazine, herself a granddaughter of Group 1 winning sprinter Glamour Puss (Tale Of The Cat).

Feminino delivers Classic success in Wanless silks

Less than a week after their colours were carried to victory in the New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) by Road To Paris (Circus Maximus), owners Ron and Judi Wanless were back in the winner’s enclosure courtesy of Feminino’s victory in the Kembla Grange Classic on Friday. The Tulloch Lodge filly was having only her third start after breaking her maiden over 1400 metres at Warwick Farm on February 4. After a quiet trial between runs, Fiminino successfully stepped up in class and in distance with a determined performance under Tim Clark. Drawn wide, she raced without cover and rallied late to narrowly secure her first black type win in the Group 3 contest. “She’s always been held in quite high regard and after she won the other day Gai and Adrian picked this race for her,” Clark said. “She had to go five weeks between runs and had a trial in between, which isn’t always easy, but it shows the quality of the filly. She was wide the whole way but we went steady early and she kept responding in the straight. She’ll definitely improve off that.” Clarke suggested another rise in trip could be imminent, with targets like the Adrian Knox (Gr 3, 2000m) potentially on the table.

Bidding open for Magic Millions Digital Sale

Bidding has opened for the latest Magic Millions Digital Sale, which will run from March 13-18 and features a catalogue of 41 lots, with more than half offered unreserved. Among the offerings is Riapinka (Bel Esprit) (Lot 28) – a half-sister to recent Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (RL, 1400m) winner Torque To Be Sure (Shamus Award) – offered in foal to Mo’unga (Savabeel). Arrowfield Training Centre will present three well-bred prospects that have been broken in or trialled, including two unreserved fillies – Symbolise (Castelvecchio) (Lot 11), a granddaughter of the late Miss Finland (Redoute’s Choice), and Wedding Vow (Dundeel) (Lot 12), a daughter of Group 3 winner I Am Serious (Choisir). Yarraman Park offers lightly raced filly Decoy (I Am Invincible) (Lot 15), who has had two provincial starts in New South Wales and presents as both a racing and breeding prospect. Also among the catalogue is Lasqueti Boom (Spirit Of Boom) (Lot 26), a half-sister to VRC Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m) winner Lasqueti Spirit, offered unreserved as a breeding prospect after a career that included a win and metropolitan placings in Sydney. Another highlight is Sassari (Tarzino) (Lot 30), offered in foal to Toronado (High Chaparral) and selling with a Pride Of Dubai (Street Cry) colt foal at foot. A five per cent share in the Michael Hickmott-trained Cash (Snitzel) (Lot 17), a Melbourne winner who placed in last Saturday’s Magic Millions SA 3&4YO Classic (1200m), is also being offered unreserved. Bidding will begin closing from 12pm (QLD time) on Wednesday, March 18. To view the catalogue, please click here.

Pierro Plate winner to chase berth in ‘open’ Slipper field

Pierro Plate (1100m) winner Ciaron’s Star (I Am Invincible) could launch a late Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) bid when she lines up in Saturday’s Magic Night Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Rosehill. The filly had originally been sent to the paddock after finishing sixth to stablemate Spicy Miss (Trapeze Artist) in the Sweet Embrace Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) but trainer Ciaron Maher reconsidered after she thrived during her short break. Maher’s assistant Johann Gerard-Dubord said the stable decided the filly deserved another chance with this year’s Slipper shaping as an open contest. “The original plan was to give her a break, but she had a couple of days in the paddock and was feeling very well,” Gerard-Dubord said. “We thought the Slipper looks very open this year, so she’ll run this week. If she happened to win we could consider the Slipper, but she’s also second favourite for the Percy Sykes Stakes, so that race is a strong option as well.” Spicy Miss is already locked in the Slipper, while Maher’s Tornado Valley (Too Darn Hot) looks set to step out in trip. “He’ll probably go to a Sires’ Produce Stakes, as the other day [when sixth in the Todman Stakes] showed 1200 metres might be a bit sharp for him,” Gerard-Dubord said of the Too Darn Hot (Dubawi) colt.

Shohisha ‘spot on’ to tackle Coolmore Classic second-up

Shohisha (Credit: Sportpix)

Trainer David Payne is confident Shohisha (Supido) can produce a peak performance when she lines up in Saturday’s Coolmore Classic (Gr 1, 1500m) at Rosehill. The four-year-old will head into the race second-up, a scenario that has previously suited her, having won three of her four second-up runs. Payne said a minor setback earlier in her preparation delayed the mare’s return but she has progressed well since. “She had a few setbacks along the way which held us back a little bit,” Payne said. “She just kicked the box. Nothing serious, but once you treat them you can’t run them. We’re very happy with her. She’s spot-on for Saturday.” Shohisha resumed with a solid fourth in the Guy Walter Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) behind fellow Coolmore Classic contender Verona Rose (Castelvecchio) on February 28. She meets that mare four kilograms better at the weights and has drawn barrier six. Payne said luck in running would be crucial. “I think she’ll be competitive. We’re going in happy but you always need a bit of luck in running,” he said. Meanwhile, Payne will also saddle Persian Wonder (Hello Youmzain) in the Pago Pago Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m). “He probably won’t be sharp enough to win over 1200 metres but he’ll be running on strongly,” Payne said. “He’ll be more effective once he gets to 1600 metres later in the carnival.”

Phillip Island set for Showdown debut

The Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr stable will unveil promising colt Phillip Island (Written Tycoon) in Saturday’s $1 million Showdown (1200m) at Caulfield. The $250,000 Inglis Classic purchase remains entered for next week’s Golden Slipper at Rosehill, although a trip to Sydney appears unlikely at this stage. Kent Jnr said the stable held the colt in high regard – an opinion solidified by a strong start to the season with its juveniles. Big Sky (Bivouac), Guest House (Home Affairs) and Brazen Dechambeau (Brazen Beau) have been among the stable’s leading two-year-olds this term, with Kent Jnr placing Phillip Island just behind that group. “Every year we have around 80 two-year-olds come through the system and you can rank them in a pecking order,” Kent Jnr said. “When your top three start winning races and showing they’re among the best in the country, it gives you confidence about the horses just below them. This colt is in that category we think.” Phillip Island heads into the race after a single trial this preparation, winning at Caulfield Heath under Craig Williams last month. With Williams riding in Sydney this weekend, Jamie Melham will take the mount. “We’re going in off one trial but he trialled very well,” Kent Jnr said. “He’s a highly strung horse and we’re asking a lot of him, but there are only three winners in the race and plenty of debutants like us. The test might be running out a strong 1200 metres first-up, but the prize-money in a restricted race made it worth having a go.”

Blinkers on for Salty Pearl’s VOBIS Platinum Guineas bid

The Ciaron Maher stable will revert to a proven strategy as Salty Pearl (Tagaloa) attempts to land Saturday’s $500,000 VOBIS Platinum Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield. The filly will back up from her third placing in the Kewney Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) at Flemington last weekend, a tactic that previously proved successful when she won the Fillies’ Classic (Gr 2, 1600m) at The Valley on Cox Plate Day after finishing fourth in the Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) a week earlier. Maher has also opted to apply blinkers in a bid to sharpen the three-year-old. “We backed her up last preparation and she was able to win at The Valley, and this looks a nice race for her,” Maher said. “We’ve got the blinkers up our sleeve. We tried them last campaign and she really responded. She came through the run well and I think she’s still on the up.” Salty Pearl will be fourth-up on Saturday after finishing third first-up at Caulfield, followed by a second to Sheza Alibi (Saxon Warrior) in the Angus Armanasco Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) before her latest placing. The filly has been remarkably consistent, finishing in the placings in nine of her 11 starts. Maher will also saddle Milsons Point (Blue Point) in the $1 million Showdown. The colt won on debut at Pakenham and finished second in the Blue Diamond Preview (Listed, 1000m) (C\&G) before finishing down the track in last month’s Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m). “His two runs prior to the Blue Diamond were very good,” Maher said. “The Diamond didn’t go to plan, but he’s worked well during the week and we’re hoping he can bounce back.”

Oh Too Good returns to Caulfield for Mystic Journey

Oh Too Good (Credit: Sportpix)

Trainer Kevin Daffy is confident there are more big moments ahead for his stable star Oh Too Good (All Too Hard) as the mare resumes at Caulfield on Saturday. The six-year-old enjoyed a breakout campaign in the spring, landing her first stakes victory in the Ladies’ Day Vase (Gr 3, 1600m) on Caulfield Guineas Day. The victory, achieved by Daffy with the only horse in his care, captured the imagination of racing fans and was later voted World Pool’s Moment of the Year. Oh Too Good will return to Caulfield for the first time since that success when she lines up in The Mystic Journey (1100m) first-up this weekend. “I think she’s come back really well,” Daffy told Racing.com. “She had a terrific spell and I think the best is ahead of her.” Rated a $4.50 chance for the 1100-metre contest on Friday, All Too Good has been prepared with two jump-outs ahead of her return. “I’m expecting a bold showing,” Daffy said. “She always runs well first-up and she’s going well. I’m excited to get her there.” Daffy said Saturday’s performance would determine the mare’s autumn program. “I just want to see how she goes and then assess from there,” he said. “If she sprints well and is sharp enough we might stick to the shorter trips, otherwise we’ll probably aim her back out to the mile.”

Australasian Oaks path begins for Mating Call

Promising filly Mating Call (Brazen Beau) could be on track for the Australasian Oaks (Gr 1, 2000m) if she performs well when resuming at Morphettville Parks on Saturday. Prepared by Dan Clarken and Oopy MacGillivray, the three-year-old returns in the card’s Benchmark 72 (1300m) carrying 60 kilograms, which Clarken believes may be her biggest challenge first-up. “She’s had a jump-out and two barrier trials because I wanted her fit and primed to be very competitive first-up,” Clarken said. “The weight is a slight worry but she’s talented and probably deserves it.” Mating Call was winless during a spring campaign in Melbourne but produced competitive performances, including a third in the Edward Manifold Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) and a fifth in the Thousand Guineas. Clarken said the experience had helped the filly mature significantly. “Since being in Melbourne she’s grown up,” he said. “Her runs there were terrific and she’s matured into a more tractable horse. Over the spring she was a bit timid around other horses but she’s improving all the time.” Clarken has mapped out a path toward the $1 million Australasian Oaks, with the Clare Lindop Stakes (Listed, 1600m) and Auraria Stakes (Gr 3, 1800m) pencilled in as lead-up races. Drawn in barrier two, Mating Call was rated a $3.80 chance on Friday, with Sir Myka (Doubtland) ($3.10) heading the market. “From the soft draw she should find a nice spot and it wouldn’t surprise me if she runs very well,” Clarken said.

Sydney form can strike with Sibaaq at the Gold Coast

Declan Maher believes experienced gelding Sibaaq (Dark Angel) could represent value when he lines up in Saturday’s Gold Coast Stakes (1800m). The eight-year-old was a $11 chance in early betting despite producing strong recent form in Sydney. Maher, who trains near the Gold Coast racecourse, said runners from his relatively new Queensland operation often start at bigger odds than those from more established metropolitan stables. “I think a few of my runners get a bit of extra odds because we’re still building the stable,” he said. “In a lot of his starts he has drifted in the market. He was out to $27 when he just missed by a stride in the Mayor’s Vase.” Sibaaq finished fifth behind Piggyback (Trapeze Artist) in the Parramatta Cup (Gr 3, 1900m) at Rosehill on February 21, which followed a narrow defeat in the Gold Coast Mayor’s Vase (2050m) in January. After his Sydney run, Sibaaq spent time at Ciaron Maher’s property at Bong Bong before returning to the Gold Coast. “He’s had a quiet six weeks and just needed a couple of pieces of work,” Maher said. “He enjoys getting down to the beach at The Spit to keep him happy. Hopefully he can do the rest tomorrow.”

Victoria names team for apprentice series

Racing Victoria (RV) has named a six-rider team to represent the state in the 2026 National Apprentice Race Series, which begins this weekend in the Northern Territory. The series opens at Alice Springs Turf Club on Sunday, March 15, where Jess Booth will take the Victorian ride for the opening two legs. The annual competition sees apprentice jockeys from across Australia compete across six meetings, with two apprentice-only races staged at each venue as riders accumulate points towards the national title. RV has nominated one representative for each round of the series. Makisha Salter will represent Victoria at Elwick Racecourse on March 22, before Dakotah Keane heads west to ride at Belmont Park on March 25. The series then moves to Queensland, where Emily Pozman will take the Victorian ride at Eagle Farm on April 8. Victoria will host the penultimate round at Sandown Lakeside on April 15, with leading apprentice Ryan Houston selected to represent the home state. The series concludes at Murray Bridge Racecourse on April 22, where Caitlin Hollowood will carry the Victorian colours. RV apprentice jockey coach Darren Gauci said the series provided an important opportunity for emerging riders. “The Series is a fantastic way for some of Victoria’s most promising apprentices to test themselves on a national stage,” Gauci said.

Basil Nolan honoured with Hall of Fame induction

Veteran Queensland breeder Basil Nolan will be inducted into the Queensland Racing Hall of Fame in recognition of his decades-long contribution to the thoroughbred industry. Nolan, a key figure behind Raheen Stud, was informed of the honour on Wednesday during the Magic Millions March Yearling Sale. The 80-year-old has spent much of his life involved in the operation of the family-run farm near Warwick, having joined his parents in running Raheen Stud in 1963. Alongside his wife Diane, Nolan has helped develop the property into a respected breeding operation. Beyond his work at Raheen, Nolan has played a significant role in industry governance and advocacy. He joined the committee of the Thoroughbred Breeders Queensland Association in 1969, serving as president from 1980 to 1991 and again from 2010. During his tenure he helped promote initiatives aimed at strengthening the state’s breeding sector, including developments to the Queensland Thoroughbred Incentive Scheme and the Breeders Bonus scheme. Nolan has represented Queensland on the board of Thoroughbred Breeders Australia since its establishment in 2005 and has served as president since 2014. “It’s unbelievable – I truly never expected to be in the Queensland Racing Hall of Fame,” Nolan said. “It’s a great surprise and I’m appreciative of everybody who has made this happen. It’s not just an honour for me, it’s for the thoroughbred breeders in Queensland and the people that make it up, alongside my wife who is my backbone.”

Racing NSW to appeal Supreme Court judgement over scope of powers

Racing NSW will appeal Wednesday’s NSW Supreme Court judgement that it says has cast uncertainty over the scope of its powers to fund race clubs and support the broader thoroughbred racing industry across the state.

During the hearing, the Court considered whether Racing NSW’s authority extends beyond matters strictly related to the “racing of galloping horses.” Racing NSW said a narrow interpretation of that wording could restrict its ability to fund infrastructure, facilities and operational support for race clubs.

Racing NSW said such funding was critical to maintaining racing across the state’s 120 clubs and supporting the more than 50,000 participants employed in the industry.

“Without certainty on this issue, Racing NSW’s ability to continue supporting race clubs and the communities they serve could be put at risk,” the body said in a statement.

Racing NSW noted that, aside from the Australian Turf Club (ATC), race clubs across the state are currently in their strongest financial position in a decade, with net assets and cash reserves having doubled over that period.

The regulator also highlighted that it distributed a record $422 million in prize money and other payments to participants last year, which it said was $110 million more than any other Australian jurisdiction.

Justice Michael Kunc also ruled that Racing NSW’s statutory power to appoint an administrator does not conflict with the Corporations Act, dismissing the ATC’s claim on that point.

Racing NSW had sought to appoint an administrator to the ATC citing concerns around financial management and governance, issues it said remain unresolved.

The decision to appeal has drawn criticism from the Racing Reform Group NSW, which said further litigation would divert industry funds and attention during the autumn carnival.

The group argued that any concerns raised by the judgment should instead be addressed through the ongoing review of the Thoroughbred Racing Act being conducted by former NSW minister Brad Hazzard.

It also called for Racing NSW to publish a detailed breakdown of its wagering income and financial transactions with race clubs, saying greater transparency was needed across the industry.

Tauranga Group 2 test for Chattahoochee

Chattahoochee (Credit: Race Images)

Chattahoochee (Reliable Man) will face his first stakes assignment for trainer Lisa Anderson when he lines up in Saturday’s Japan Trophy (Gr 2, 1600m) at Tauranga. The seven-year-old resumed with a pleasing performance when fifth in the Wairere Falls Classic (1500m) at Matamata last month, his first start in almost a year. Anderson said she was encouraged by the run. “He went a huge race first-up,” she said. “It was his first run in ten months, he drew wide and the track was pretty heavy.” Formerly trained by Debbie Sweeney, Chattahoochee returned to Anderson’s care after a lengthy break following a busy campaign that included a trip to Melbourne in 2024. “He had a long campaign and probably came to the end of it, so we gave him a decent spell,” Anderson said. Initially pre-training the gelding, Anderson eventually decided to keep him in her small team. “I had another horse in work and it was easier to work two than one,” she said. Anderson purchased Chattahoochee for $8,250 on Gavelhouse after previously training his dam Auspicious (Darci Brahma). The popular grey has been a consistent performer, winning seven races and finishing runner-up in the 2024 Easter Handicap (Gr 3, 1600m). He drew barrier six for Saturday’s Group 2 and will be ridden by Joe Doyle. “He’s bright and well and I can’t fault him,” Anderson said. A return to the Easter Handicap could be on the agenda later this autumn.

Sorghaghtani gets black type shot

In-form mare Sorghaghtani (Mongolian Khan) will get her first stakes opportunity in Saturday’s Japan Trophy at Tauranga – provided her trainers can secure a rider. Prepared by Graham Richardson and Rogan Norvall, the mare has been in strong form this preparation, finishing runner-up at Te Rapa behind subsequent Group 3 performer She’s A Dealer (Ace High) before posting back-to-back mile victories at Ellerslie in January. Richardson said the stable felt Sorghaghtani deserved a crack at black-type company despite drawing barrier 13. “She deserves a crack,” he said. “She’s been working well, but the draw is a concern and it’s been a bit of a struggle with riders.” Richardson has also been searching for a jockey for Lodi Dodi (Blue Point), who is entered for the card’s Rating 65 (1400m) contest. “We had George Rooke booked but he’s been suspended, so we’re currently without a rider,” Richardson said. “If we can’t find one we’ll save her for our home meeting at Matamata.” The stable will also saddle up Stay Frosty (Preferment) and Absolutelyfabulous (Sweynesse) in the 1400-metre maiden. Stay Frosty has finished runner-up in all three starts, while Absolutelyfabulous has also recorded second placings at her past two outings. “I don’t like clashing horses but sometimes you have to,” Richardson said. Stakes performer Romilly (So You Think) will round out the stable’s Tauranga team in the Rating 75 (1400m).

Ronaldo looking to score at Wanganui

Ronaldo (Credit: Race Images)

Trainer Robbie Patterson is hopeful promising juvenile Ronaldo (Ribchester) can maintain his unbeaten record when he lines up in Saturday’s Palamountains Nutrition 2YO (1200m) at Wanganui. The New Plymouth-trained colt has been impressive in his early appearances, including a debut victory over 1200 metres at New Plymouth last month. Patterson said the well-related youngster had continued to please in his work. “He’s a gorgeous horse,” he said. “He’s got a beautiful draw [2] and should put himself right there. I imagine his ability will take him a fair way.” A start in the Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Trentham in a fortnight is the next target for the colt, with Saturday’s race expected to provide a key lead-up. “He’s getting ready for the Sires’ Produce in two weeks and he hasn’t put a foot wrong since winning first-up,” Patterson said. “I’m really excited about seeing him go around again.” Ronaldo was the $1.75 favourite with TAB bookmakers on Friday and is currently rated a $10 chance for the Sires’ Produce.

O’Riordan on song for Beaumont Publican’s Cup

Recent winner O’Riordan (Proisir) will make the trip south from Timaru to Wingatui on Sunday as trainer Stephanie Faulkner looks to build on the mare’s winning form in the Beaumont Publican’s Cup (1500m). The six-year-old scored over the same distance last week after finishing runner-up at Riccarton at her previous start. Faulkner said the mare had come through the run so well she was happy to back her up quickly. “I don’t normally back her up this quickly, but she was messing around in the paddock like she had recovered really well,” Faulkner said. “She was out there bucking and carrying on, so I thought it wouldn’t hurt her to go again.” Drawn barrier ten, O’Riordan will be partnered by Central Districts jockey Leah Hemi, with Faulkner expecting the mare to race prominently. “She’ll roll forward and if something else wants to lead she can sit on its quarters,” she said. “If not, she’s happy to go to the front.” After Sunday’s run, Faulkner said the mare would likely head for a short break.

Frankie Lor’s Smart Golf heads rising young guns at Sha Tin

Smart Golf (Credit: HKJC)

A group of progressive young horses will look to continue their upward trajectory at Sha Tin on Sunday, headed by Frankie Lor-trained Smart Golf (Needs Further). The Australian-bred four-year-old impressed last start when scoring his second win from four runs this season, powering home by 2.5 lengths in a Class 4 (1200m) three weeks ago while carrying top weight. That performance earned Smart Golf a nine-point rating rise and promotion to Class 3, where he will contest the Kowloon City Handicap (1200m) under Harry Bentley. Bentley said the gelding had the ability to cope with the step up in grade despite drawing barrier ten. “That wider barrier makes things a little more difficult but he shows good gate speed early,” Bentley said. “If we can get into a similar position to last time, I’d be happy. The rise to Class 3 is a challenge but he’s carrying less weight, so I think he’s up to it.” Another runner on the rise is Turquoise Velocity (Zoustar), trained by Francis Lui. The four-year-old has won two of his three starts this season and will contest the Lok Sin Tong Cup Handicap (1000m) with Keith Yeung retaining the ride. “I’ve liked him since day one and he’s always shown good ability,” Yeung said. “He’s progressing well and I’m really happy with how he’s going.” Meanwhile, Caspar Fownes-trained Papaya Brose (Zousain) will seek to build on an impressive debut victory when he lines up in the Lung Kong Handicap (1400m) under Hugh Bowman.

Little Paradise and Stormy Grove headline Hong Kong Derby field

Toronado (High Chaparral) pair Little Paradise and Stormy Grove headline the 14 selected runners for next Sunday’s HK$26 million Hong Kong Derby (Listed, 2000m) at Sha Tin. The 149th running of the city’s most prestigious race forms the final leg of the Four-Year-Old Classic Series. Top-rated Little Paradise (103) will chase a seventh career win after claiming the Hong Kong Classic Mile (Listed, 1600m) for trainer Jimmy Ting, while Stormy Grove stamped his Derby credentials with a powerful late surge to capture the Hong Kong Classic Cup (Listed, 1800m) for Frankie Lor. Lor will also saddle Numbers (Tivaci), winner of the Centenary Vase (Gr 3, 1800m), alongside Regal Gem (Zoustar). Other leading contenders include Invincible Ibis (Hellbent), runner-up to Stormy Grove in the Classic Cup for Mark Newnham, and Patch Of Cosmo (Super Seth), a fast-finishing third in the same race for Manfred Man. Pierre Ng will saddle Brazilian Group 1 winner Sagacious Life (Put It Back), while John Size – a three-time Derby-winning trainer – runs Juneau Pride (Pride Of Dubai), who steps up to 2000 metres for the first time. The race has produced many of Hong Kong’s modern champions, including Golden Sixty (Medaglia D'Oro), Romantic Warrior (Acclamation) and Voyage Bubble (Deep Field).

US: OBS March concludes in style with $1 million Yaupon colt

A colt by Yaupon (Uncle Mo) took the number of seven-figure purchases at the OBS March Two-Year-Olds in Training Sale to seven when selling for US$1 million during Thursday’s third and final session. Consigned by King’s Equine, the bay colt was secured by bloodstock agent Donato Lanni on behalf of the Three Amigos partnership of Michael Pegram, Karl Watson and Paul Weitman. “He was beautiful, fast and sound,” Lanni told BloodHorse. “These horses that bring this kind of money have to do everything right, and he did.” The colt is out of the well-related Lemon Drop Kid (Kingmambo) mare Balbina and had previously sold for US$235,000 to Jose D’Angelo at last year’s Keeneland September Sale. King’s Equine’s Raul Reyes said the colt had generated strong interest throughout the sale. “There was a lot of interest in the horse, so we thought he might reach seven figures,” Reyes said. The three-day sale concluded with 443 horses sold for US$72.05 million, surpassing the previous March record of US$71.47 million set in 2023. The average rose to US$162,641 up from US$151,992, while the median increased to US$85,000, up from US$70,000 last year.
