Coolmore Australia have purchased last weekend’s Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Guest House (Home Affairs) in a big money deal rumoured to be worth around $30 million.

A son of the operation’s resident first-season sire Home Affairs (I Am Invincible), the Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained colt will now race in a partnership run by Coolmore after a deal was reached with his owners, Roll The Dice, who will remain in the ownership.

What's On

Guest House will continue to sport the upwardly mobile syndicator's unique colours as part of the terms of the new deal.

Coolmore’s Tom Magnier said: “Home Affairs is a stallion that we have had such great faith in for a number of years and Guest House has been on our radar since his debut win in December. He is exactly the type of colt we strive to stand at Coolmore – a Golden Slipper winner by a brilliant young sire, with the speed and physique to make a top-class stallion.

“The Slipper remains the most important stallion-making race in Australia and he couldn’t have been any more impressive in winning it.”

Home Affairs, a son of I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit), stood his first season at stud for a fee of $110,000 (inc GST) and joined the likes of Danehill (Danzig) and Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt) in producing a Golden Slipper-winning colt from his first crop.

Tom Magnier

Magnier continued: “Some leading stallions go their whole careers without producing a Golden Slipper winner. Home Affairs’ sire I Am Invincible is a champion stallion, but is yet to produce a winner of the race.

“For Home Affairs to produce a dominant Golden Slipper-winning colt like Guest House in his first crop is extremely significant. He’s burst onto the scene in a similar way to Extreme Choice in recent years, when he produced Stay Inside to win the Golden Slipper in his first crop.”

Guest House announced himself as a future talent when breaking his maiden at Cranbourne in December, following up that win with a second-placed finish in the Blue Diamond Prelude (C&G) (Gr 3, 1100m). The two-year-old then showed his Group 1 potential when making the podium in Caulfield’s Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) last month.

He landed Slipper laurels when successfully reversing the form with Streisand (Magnus), winner of the Blue Diamond, when beating that filly by 1.4 lengths at Rosehill last Saturday.

Bred by Love Racing PL, Henderson Racing and Breeding and G1G Racing and Breeding, Guest House was bought from Newgate’s draft at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale for $270,000 by Price, Tim Rogers Bloodstock and the Roll The Dice Racing.

This is the second big stallion acquisition for Coolmore in as many months, with the operation having paid a hefty sum to buy proven sire Super Seth (Dundeel) from leading New Zealand nursery Waikato Stud.

Bred by Torryburn Stud, Home Affairs was bought by Magnier for $875,000 at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale in 2020. He opened his account as a juvenile in the Silver Slipper (Gr 2, 1100m) and finished eighth in the Golden Slipper later that season.

He earned his own place among Australia's stallion ranks with a win in the Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) as a three-year-old and added a second elite victory to his CV in the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m).

Guest House will stand at Coolmore alongside his father and other big names including fellow Slipper winner Shinzo (Snitzel) at the conclusion of his racing career.

Home Affairs has 17 lots catalogued at the two-day Inglis Easter Yearling Sale which will get under way in Sydney on Sunday.

Lovatsville to stand Group-winning juvenile Espionage in 2026

Espionage (Credit: Sportpix)

Lovatsville Stud has added the multiple Group-race winner Espionage to its roster for the 2026 breeding season and the son of Zoustar (Northern Meteor) will stand for an introductory fee of $11,000 (inc GST).

A boom early season juvenile, Espionage won the Breeders' Plate (Gr 3, 1000m) on debut before returning in the autumn to land the Kindergarten Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) in great style, scoring by over three lengths.

Bred by Gerry Harvey’s Baramul Stud, he was purchased by James Harron Bloodstock Colt Partnership for $1 million at the 2023 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale and trained throughout his career by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott.

Espionage’s high-class juvenile performances prompted Coolmore and their partners to land a multi-million-dollar deal to acquire a majority share of the horse, however, an untimely injury on the cusp of his three-year-old season put paid to ambitions for an Everest (Gr 1, 1200m) campaign.

Lovatsville’s Sam White revealed his delight at securing the horse, with Coolmore retaining an interest.

“He is a great coup for our farm and for Victoria, and to have Coolmore’s continued backing underlines his credentials in this market,” said White.

“He is a beautifully coloured stallion with a fabulous Zoustar-styled head. A brilliant loose mover with a plunging girth and great shoulder. He has scope, short cannons, great length to his hocks, and has an outstanding demeanour.”

Meanwhile, champion trainer Gai Waterhouse endorsed the prospects of Espionage standing at Lovatsville. The four-year-old finishes his racing career with two wins and two further placings from ten starts, with just short of $450,000 earned in prize-money.

“He was very much a precocious two-year-old, a sensational horse with enormous speed who did everything so easily,” Waterhouse said.

“He has such a fabulous temperament, which is so important. He is as good-looking a colt as you will find, and being a fast son of Zoustar with looks like his, I know that breeders will be very impressed when they see him.”

By champion sire Zoustar, Espionage is out of the city-winning Street Cry (Machiavellian) mare In Times Of War, who herself is a daughter of Group 2-winning mare Military Rose (General Nediym).

Espionage has 50 quality mares already committed to the 2026 breeding season through a strong shareholder syndicate.

“With his looks, pedigree, performance, and price point, he is your commercial 'look and book' moneymaker,” White added.

Morning Briefing

Australia

First for The Odyssey

The Odyssey (Credit: Telemon Thoroughbreds)

Telemon Thoroughbreds’ first-season sire The Odyssey (Better Than Ready) sired his first winner on Thursday when Duke Of Albemarle (2 g ex Clarendon House by Real Saga) scored on his debut at Ipswich. Ridden by Damien Thornton for trainer Kelly Schweida, the juvenile gelding defeated Olivonl (Zoustar) by 0.4 lengths with a further 2.9 lengths back to the third-placed Langan (Wild Ruler). Duke Of Albemarle was purchased by Telemon for $65,000 out of Infinity Thoroughbreds at the 2025 Magic Millions Gold Coast National Yearling Sale. Out of the winning Real Saga (Tale Of The Cat) mare Clarendon House, he is a half-brother to winner Helen’s Dream (Denman). The Odyssey stood the 2025 breeding season at a fee of $5,500 (inc GST).

Vinery assignment for Panova

The Chris Waller-trained filly Panova (Trapeze Artist) will be out to deny her new stablemate Ohope Wins (Ocean Park) when the pair clash in Saturday's Vinery Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at Rosehill. The three-year-old Panova ended her spring with back-to-back victories in the Reginald Allen Quality (Listed, 1400m) and Carbine Club Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m), before returning this campaign for a sixth placing in the Surround Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) and last-start fifth in the Phar Lap Stakes (Gr 2, 1500m). "Ricky Surace [owner, B2B Thoroughbreds], they do the gene testing and the blood testing, and it all indicates she is a proper stayer," Waller's assistant Charlie Duckworth said. "So they were rapt in the spring when she won the Carbine Club the way she did. They said, 'she's not even meant to be doing this yet, she is meant for an Oaks trip'. Obviously, she is going to have to be very good to beat Ohope Wins, but if she is a genuine stayer, the 2400 [metres of the Australian Oaks next start] should see a fair match." Panova will be ridden by Tommy Berry, who was in the saddle for her two black-type wins and for her latest effort. "I was really happy with the way she found the line last start, and she's not going to be giving as much of a start this time around with the smaller field," Berry said. "She probably doesn't want it too wet, but she's warming up to something."

Lloyd hoping for more Group 1 glory at Rosehill

Having scored aboard Guest House (Home Affairs) in last weekend's Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m), jockey Zac Lloyd will bid to add more Group 1 glory to his CV on Saturday when he heads to Rosehill. "It's good to do it for yourself, but you can make so many other people happy as well," Lloyd said of his Golden Slipper win. "It's a great feeling knowing you have played a part in a weekend so many people won't forget. It's pretty special. But back to business now. I've got to try to chase up the feeling again." Lloyd will have rides in both of the Group 1 races at Rosehill on Saturday, partnering the Ciaron Maher’s recent Parramatta Cup (Listed, 1900m) winner Piggyback (Trapeze Artist) in the Tancred Stakes (Gr 1, 2400m) and dual Group 3-winning Kiwi raider Belle Cheval (Savabeel) in the Vinery Stud Stakes. "She is probably outclassed in a weight-for-age Tancred, but you verse those better horses and it can bring your level up as well," Lloyd said of Piggyback. "It could be just what she needs before dropping in the weights for a Sydney Cup. It will be a tough run, but I think a perfect run for her to be really peaking for the Sydney Cup. The 2000 metres with her [Belle Cheval] is an unknown but she is trained by some really good trainers in Mark Walker and Sam [Bergerson] before, and they're confident. She is probably going to have the best turn of foot in the race, and if she can run out the 2000 [metres], she is going to be right there in the finish."

Smith to have quartet of stakes runners at Rosehill

Matt Smith will send out a quartet of stakes runners at Rosehill on Saturday, with Idle Flyer (Dundeel) being the main contender of his four and she is set to tackle the Emancipation Stakes (Gr 2, 1500m). A winner of the Angst Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) in October, the four-year-old mare returned with a first-up fourth in the Wenona Girl Quality (Gr 3, 1200m) before taking out a barrier trial at Warwick Farm on March 20. "We started in a race we didn't really want to start in because we had a few interruptions to her 'prep'," Smith said. "She has been a little bit behind. Her run was good first-up, so she goes into this race fit and well, but is she at her peak yet? Probably not. She is ready to go, but one more and she will be cherry ripe." In a busy afternoon for the stable, Smith will also saddle up Portland (Dubawi) in the Neville Sellwood Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m) and Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) aspirants Eureka Rebel (Fierce Impact) and Dezignation (So You Think) in the Tulloch Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m). "Both look like they will stay really well," Smith said of his Tulloch Stakes duo. "I just want to see them hitting the line. The danger in these races is you get no tempo, and then they're not going to be suited. I don't know what the Derby field will be like. I thought it might lack a bit of depth in the staying ranks, and we'd give it a shot. He [Portland] has been looking to get out to this trip [2000 metres]. He's not right at his top yet, but he's on the way and this will be another step in the right direction. His work has been good, and I can't fault him really."

Wet conditions mean Australian Cup start for Basilina

The forecast of potential wet conditions in Flemington this weekend have persuaded trainers Emma-Lee and David Browne to run Basilinna (Staphanos) in the Australian Cup (Gr 1, 2000m). The five-year-old mare also had the option of running in Saturday's Roy Higgins (Listed, 2600m), but the Browne's have decided to aim high with the stakes-winning daughter of Staphanos (Deep Impact) on the basis that the ground will come up soft on the day. "I've been praying for rain and that is why we decided to accept for the Australian Cup," Emma-Lee Browne said. "We felt the Roy Higgins was a bit far second-up. I thought she was really good the other day and she just blew out in the last little bit, so the 2000 [metres] suits better, but it just so happens that it's quite a strong Group 1. With the rain that's coming, it probably gets her a bit closer and slows a few of the fancied ones down. The Andrew Ramsden is the one we have a circle around and hopefully by then there will be some give in the ground. We know she likes it and I've been watching the forecasts and I'm praying for rain. She had a tiny chip that was removed last year and she's come back great. It was incredibly bad timing. She was a bit heavy going into her first run, but we were really happy with her, and before that she possibly over-trialled. She's never trialled that good before and I think she might have got a little over-excited. Her work has been good since and hopefully she runs well on Saturday."

Whisky On The Hill chasing Cup berth in Roy Higgins

Whisky On The Hill (Credit: Sportpix)

Whisky On The Hill (Ribchester) will be bidding to secure himself a ballot exemption for November's Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) when he tackles Saturday's Roy Higgins at Flemington. The recent rain in the region has been welcomed by the six-year-old's trainer Glen Thompson, with the gelding having scored his last win on a Heavy 8 surface in the 2025 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 3, 2600m). He has run sixth in both the Australian Cup Prelude (2000m) and Peter Young Stakes (Gr 2, 1800m) in two outings this preparation. "It's been the plan since the time he came in, but we haven't had the smoothest of preps," Thompson said. "He missed a run early on which really put us on the backfoot. It's unfortunate the programming here isn't ideal to get to a race like this as there was no ideal lead-up, only a 2000-metre race three weeks beforehand. He was supposed to run over 2000 metres at Caulfield two weeks before the Flemington race, but he pulled a shoe off and stood on a nail, so he missed that run. We ran him at Flemington and I couldn't go third-up into a 2600-metre race, so I dropped him back in distance and ran in the Peter Young. He's fit enough for it. He wouldn't be running if I didn't think he was. The bit of rain forecast is ideal, it doesn't look like an overly strong race, but he hasn't had the perfect prep for it." Thompson said the Sydney Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) at Randwick on April 11 remains a possibility for Whisky On The Hill. "I tossed up about aborting this race before the 1800-metre at Caulfield and running in the Manion Cup in Sydney, but then he's got this 2600-metre run under the belt if we do decide to go to Sydney," Thompson said.

Dwyer’s Paradise Storm bidding for Cup slot

The Henry Dwyer-trained Paradise Storm (Masked Marvel) will be another horse aiming to book a ticket for the Melbourne Cup via this weekend's Roy Higgins. The five-year-old gelding is arriving into Saturday's Listed contest having bolted up by over six lengths in the Auckland Cup (Gr 2, 3200m) in New Zealand earlier in the month, and Dwyer revealed the son of Masked Marvel (Montjeu) has returned from that trip in good form. “I don’t see why not – he’s in pretty good order,” Dwyer told Racing.com. “I reckon he’s bounced through that trip away pretty well; he had a really quiet week following it. And I know he won easily, but he didn’t have a hard run either. He was very strong through the line and pulled up really well initially from it. He spent the next week just going on the walker and out in the paddock in New Zealand. He arrived back here bucking and squealing – he’s a really tough horse. I think he’s in good order for Saturday." Dwyer has revealed that the Sydney Cup is also on his mind for Paradise Storm. "He’s got to lump a bit of weight with the Group 2 penalty… for the Sydney Cup he’ll go back to a handicap where he’s got 53 kilograms," the trainer added. "He’ll be competitive [in the Roy Higgins], but back up to two miles will suit him better.”

Sepals to take in Doncaster Prelude

Group 1 winner Sepals (Calyx) will have his second career run in Sydney on Saturday when he takes his chance in the Doncaster Prelude (Gr 3, 1500m) at Rosehill. The Cliff Brown-trained four-year-old's previous Sydney run was a second placing behind Autumn Glow (The Autumn Sun) in the Golden Eagle (1500m) on November 1 under Ethan Brown, but he will be ridden by Tommy Berry in this weekend's Group 3. "I knew I was going to be riding in Melbourne on Golden Eagle Day, but I said to him [Brown], 'I'm happy to do all of the horse's gallops if you'd like, even though I'm not riding him'," Berry said. "He kept that in the back of his mind coming into this 'prep' and gave me a call well in advance. It was a ride I was happy to take early." Sepals has topweight of 59.5 kilograms on Saturday, but Berry doesn't expect that to impact his chances. "He handles all conditions, and he is the class runner of the field, so the weight is probably deserved," Berry said. "I galloped him on Tuesday morning. He worked behind Pallaton, who is not only a very good horse in his own right, but a very good trackworker as well. They put in a nice, sharp piece on the course proper together so he's in good order. I'd be disappointed if he doesn't go close to winning."

VRC Sprint Classic for Legacy Bound

The Robbie Griffiths-trained Legacy Bound (Ole Kirk) will have his second start this campaign when he heads back to Flemington for the VRC Sprint Classic (Listed, 1100m). The three-year-old gelding has made six starts to date, with four of those coming down the Flemington straight including for a win in the Poseidon Stakes (Listed, 1100m) and a third placing in the Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m). Legacy Bound, who also landed the Breeders' Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Morphettville as a juvenile, returned with a first-up success in an 1100-metre handicap on March 7. His Coolmore Stud Stakes third came behind Tentyris (Street Boss) and the reopposing My Gladiola (I Am Invincible). "She [My Gladiola] had the upperhand in the Coolmore, but she came from off the speed and we did more work up the front, and she might be better than us, who knows," Griffiths said. "She was also fantastic in Lightning [when second], and she gets the weight advantage on us here. Probably on facts and figures, she beats us, but it doesn't always work out like that, as we all know, and he's got a great win record. Whether that's because he's been in easier races than hers, who knows. He certainly hasn't gone backwards. He went into the race in good order. He won, he came out of it in good order. He's gone forward, but he only does as much as he has to in training, so we just keep him ticking over, but he had a good gallop on Monday morning. The stats on his sectional times from his first-up indicated he would have run really well in the Newmarket, if that means anything. He's a winner, he's won down the straight a couple of times now and let's hope we can do it again."

Gin Twist back at Flemington

Having landed the TAB We're On 2YO (Listed, 1000m) at Flemington last time out, the Lindsay Park-trained Gin Twist (Home Affairs) will return to the track on Saturday for the Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m). The juvenile daughter of Home Affairs (I Am Invincible) missed out on a spot in Australia's richest two-year-old race, last weekend's Golden Slipper, much to the disappointment of her co-trainer Ben Hayes. "It's a shame we didn't get in," Hayes, who trains in partnership with his brothers Will and JD, said. "You win a stakes race, and you normally get in, but this year it was just so open. They were taking their turns in winning and with the prize-money so strong in New South Wales, we ended up just missing out. We made the decision to not even send her up. It didn't look like she had any chance of getting a run, so we took the opportunity of giving her a jump-out at home instead. She's had that experience down the straight and hopefully that will hold her in good stead on Saturday."

Knight’s Choice set for Queensland before Cup task

The 2024 Melbourne Cup winner Knight's Choice (Extreme Choice) will head to Queensland before a plan to return for the Flemington showpiece on the first Tuesday in November later this year. Trained by John Symons and Sheila Laxon, the six-year-old gelding was last seen running sixth in the So You Think Stakes (1500m) at The Valley on September 6 and took in a trial over 1000 metres at Caulfield Heath on Thursday, where he ran fourth. “We knew that he needed it; he’s only had that one run in the last 18 months or so,” Symons told Racing.com. “He was always going to need the trial, and he probably blew out a little at the end. We’ll go to a 1500-metre or 1400-metre trial, whatever we can find now, send him around in that and then we’ll look for a race for him. Himself, he’s in really, really good order, we’ve just got to get a bit of that condition off him, that’s all.” Symons has revealed that the Q22 (Gr 2, 2200m) at Eagle Farm on June 13 is a likely target this preparation. “Maybe the Hollindale down on the Gold Coast might be a nice step through that and then definitely the key will be to get him to the Q22,” Symonds said. “That’s the whole key [the Melbourne Cup], we obviously know he can run the 3200 metres and really dash at the end of it. That’s what wins those races. If we can get him there, it’d be lovely, but we’ll just take it as it comes. We’re a couple of years older now, we’ve just got to make sure the horse is right.”

Racing NSW announces $1.5 million fuel relief package

Racing NSW has announced a $1.5 million fuel relief package to ease the financial pressure on NSW trainers, owners and jockeys. Developed with the NSW Trainers, Jockeys and Owners Associations, the package directly responds to the rising cost of fuel, including surcharges from suppliers which has been hitting the industry hard. The package, fully funded by Racing NSW, includes: a $100 per race starter payment for all horses travelling less than 150km each way to a race meeting, a $200 per race starter payment for all horses travelling more than 150km each way to a race meeting, and a jockey travel allowance increase, the travel component of the minimum ride fee raised to $100 per meeting. All measures start immediately and run until May 31, 2026, when they’ll be reviewed based on conditions at that time. It is estimated that a total of $1.5 million will be distributed to participants during this period. The starter payments will be credited to the trainer’s stakes payment account with 50 per cent retained by the trainer and 50 per cent credited to the owner’s account for training fees.

Flemington unveil statue of Michelle Payne

The Victoria Racing Club (VRC) unveiled a statue of Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Michelle Payne at Flemington Racecourse on Thursday. A decade after capturing global attention as the first female jockey to win the Cup, aboard Prince Of Penzance (Pentire), Payne’s statue was unveiled in front of family, friends and supporters. Created by acclaimed artist Judith Leman and generously funded by philanthropist Lady Marigold Southey AC, the statue joins Flemington’s collection of racing greats including Bart Cummings, Roy Higgins, Phar Lap (Night Raid) and Makybe Diva (Desert King). “My life changed in 2015 when I won the Melbourne Cup aboard Prince of Penzance, and it has been the most amazing journey since. To now have a statue here at Flemington is truly extraordinary; it feels very surreal,” Payne said. “As a young girl, the Melbourne Cup was the race I dreamed of winning and knowing that dream came true fills me with immense pride. My hope is that everyone who views this statue feels encouraged to chase their dreams and ambitions, no matter how big they are.”

Exciting pair primed for Group 1 challenge

St Monica (Credit: Race Images)

Juvenile stablemates Excite (Wootton Bassett) and St Monica (St Mark’s Basilica) are in tip-top order for early shots at Group 1 glory at Trentham on Saturday. The youngsters have impressed from limited opportunities and trainers Roger James and Robert Wellwood couldn’t be happier with the duo, who are viewed as exciting longer-term prospects. However, they have earned their spots in the Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) following strong starts to their career. Wootton Bassett’s (Iffraaj) son Excite has finished runner-up in both his appearances, the first behind Ronaldo (Ribchester) at New Plymouth and then at Matamata to Seize The Day (I Am Invincible), with those two currently heading Saturday’s market. “He’s a very nice horse and only had the one trial before he went to the races, so he’s just been finding his way,” Wellwood said. “He continues to thrive, he’s a pretty exciting horse and while he will handle a wet track to some extent, we would rather see him on a good deck. Whatever we see from him this preparation, he’s going to be better as a three-year-old.” St Monica was a clear-cut winner of her only start at Tauherenikau where the daughter of St Mark’s Basilica (Siyouni) comfortably accounted for Butler Cabin (Ardrossan), who had finished fifth in the Karaka Millions 2YO (RL, 1200m) at his previous run. “She’s quite immature and will definitely be better at three, but she has showed a lot of ability,” Wellwood said. “She will relax and is quite push button, it’s quite hard to split our two but the colt is probably a bit bigger and stronger at this stage.”

Anderson Bridge earns stakes tilt

Kevin and Stephen Gray are riding the crest of a wave with talented gelding Anderson Bridge (Savabeel), and they are hoping that continues at Trentham on Saturday where he will make his New Zealand stakes debut in the North Awapuni Cup (Gr 2, 2100m). The son of Savabeel (Zabeel) was purchased by Stephen Gray, in partnership with Wattle Bloodstock, out of Bhima Thoroughbreds’ 2022 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale for $200,000 while he was training in Singapore, and Anderson Bridge was subsequently entrusted to the care of leading Sydney trainer Chris Waller. Anderson Bridge won one of his 19 starts for Waller, and ran fifth and sixth respectively in the Tulloch Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m) and Frank Packer Plate (Gr 3, 2000m), before he crossed the Tasman last year to join the Grays’ Palmerston North barn. He has thrived in New Zealand, winning three of his four starts, and has earned a tilt at stakes level, which he will get at Trentham this weekend where he has drawn barrier eight and will be ridden by stable rider Bruno Queiroz. “He has come from the pre-trainer Chris Waller very well,” Gray said. “He came back here and probably did what everyone thought he would do. I knew it [Awapuni Cup] was a special conditions race, but when I look at it, he is badly off in the weights. But I think it is worth having a crack at and he is going well.”

Alottago thriving ahead of Manawatu Classic

Southern raider Alottago (Tagaloa) ran home well to finish third in his North Island debut in the Wellington Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m) at Trentham last Saturday, and trainer Lance Robinson is looking forward to stepping him up over further ground this weekend. The son of Tagaloa (Lord Kanaloa) has been a model of consistency for Robinson, winning two and placing in five of his ten starts to date, including placings in the Welcome Stakes (Listed, 1000m), Champagne Stakes (Listed, 1200m), Barneswood Farm Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) and Wellington Guineas. While he has yet to be tested over further than a mile, Robinson has always thought he would thrive over more ground, and he is looking forward to giving his gelding that opportunity at Trentham on Saturday in the Manawatu Classic (Gr 3, 2100m), where he has drawn barrier two and will be ridden by Jonathan Riddell. “He put his hand up the other day and he could be looking for a wee bit further too, which we have always thought,” Robinson said. “He gets his chance on Saturday so it will be interesting. It is his first run over distance, so I was pleased that he got an inside gate, so he might get a nice bit of cover. He has come through his race the other day really well. We left him up there, he is at Buddy Lammas’ at Otaki. He has done really well since the race, he worked well this morning, and Buddy is really happy with him.”

Comignaghi looking to build on big milestone

Tina Comignaghi brought up her 500th career win at Riccarton last Saturday, and she is hoping to add to her tally when she heads to Wingatui on Friday. “It was great. I have been waiting on it for a while, so it was good to get it,” said Comignaghi, who brought up the milestone aboard the Sophie Hargreaves and Naomi Murfitt-trained Henry Thomas (Ocean Park). Comignaghi quickly added to her haul aboard the Lance Robinson-trained Iron Hawk (Written Tycoon), who she thinks has a bright future. “He is a very talented horse, but he is still a bit green and mentally he probably needs to grow up a bit, but he has plenty of ability, so I think he will go places,” she said. That win brought her season tally to 53, placing her sixth in the New Zealand Jockeys’ Premiership, and the clear leading South Island rider. “It has been really good,” she said. “The big difference was having Eddie Brooks doing my rides, if it wasn’t for Eddie I probably wouldn’t be riding still. He is like family and he is always encouraging me and gives me a lot of confidence. He has been really good. He is not only my manager, but a mentor.” Of her 501 wins, 20 of those have been at Group or Listed level, with Comignaghi singling out her two New Zealand Cup (Gr 3, 3200m) victories aboard Aljay (Rock ‘N’ Pop) (2022) and Bozo (Satono Aladdin) (2025) for trainer Kevin Myers as her two biggest highlights. “The New Zealand Cup has to be my biggest highlight, both of them with Kevin’s horses,” she said. “He has been great to me and it was really good to win those for him.”

HK: Romantic Warrior impresses in preparation for Champions Day

Romantic Warrior (Credit: HKJC)

Romantic Warrior (Acclamantion) is proving that his advancing years are no obstacle after taking a crucial step towards next month's Champions Day on Thursday morning at Sha Tin. Impressing in his barrier trial over 1200 metres on the dirt, Danny Shum’s 13-time Group 1 winner appeared to be right on song as he aims to secure a record fourth QEII Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) triumph to add to his already phenomenal CV. Romantic Warrior, who won the FWD QEII Cup in 2022, 2023 and 2024, stepped alertly from the barriers under restraint from Hugh Bowman, crossing the line a hard-held length ahead of the Group 1-winning Red Lion (Belardo) in 1m 10.70s. “I’m very happy; he’s sound and he’s happy," Shum said. "You can see by his trial, he’s very good, and James [McDonald] just asked me as he passed the winning post, ‘Happy?’, so I sent the video to him. We might have one more trial on the grass or just gallop around one lap – we’ll see how he responds, how he comes back, how he eats and how he feels. It’ll be a strong field. This will be the strongest QEII Cup, I think, in the last ten to 15 years." Bowman added: “He was a little bit on the fresh side but, obviously, he has another month before he races. He feels great and just as powerful as ever.”

Owner: Vinnie - Three-Time Champion Sire Handicap, 1100m, March 25, Randwick-Kensington

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Reachin’ Out (Stay Inside) created a favourable impression at Randwick-Kensington on Wednesday when landing an 1100-metre contest on her debut.

The juvenile daughter of Stay Inside (Extreme Choice) had taken in two trials prior to her first competitive appearance, running third over 740 metres at Randwick before returning to the track for a trial win over 736 metres.

Ridden by Regan Bayliss on Wednesday, Reachin’ Out scored by 3.9 lengths over She’s Extra (Exceedance) with a further 1.7 lengths back to Victorious Ruler (Wild Ruler) in third.

“Gee, that was impressive. Yeah, my word,” stable representative Neil Paine said. “Regan rated her well in front, and then, once he let her go at the top of the straight, gee, she put it beyond doubt.

"That was a really impressive win. Did you guys expect a performance like that?

“Look, we knew she went well, but she was first-up today and her trials have been nice. And look... On the Kensington track, our horses race really well on the Kensington track and we knew Regan was going to lead, and our other horse was just going to sit behind, because Victoria's Rule is probably just looking for a bit further.

"So did we expect it…I'm gonna say yes.”

Reachin’ Out was purchased for $400,000 by her trainers and Kestrel Thoroughbreds from the Element Hill Unreserved Dispersal at the 2024 Magic Millions National Weanling sale draft.

She is one of five winners from six to race out of the imported Elnadim (Danzig) mare Pasar Silbano and a half-sister to the Widden Stud-based sire Zousain (Zoustar).
