Autumn Glow (The Autumn Sun) is one of the most exciting horses anywhere in the world right now and Silverdale Farm, the operation responsible for selling the star at the 2023 edition of the Inglis Australian Easter Sale, is hoping another high-class talent is waiting to be unearthed among the group of yearlings they will offer at this year’s renewal of the Sydney auction.

Steve Grant’s outfit sold the daughter of The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice) to Arrowfield Pastoral, the home of her sire, in partnership with Hermitage Thoroughbreds for a sale-topping $1.8 million, having secured her for $600,000 from her breeders, Newhaven Park, at the Magic Millions Gold Coast National Weanling Sale the previous year.

What's On

Now trained by Chris Waller, the sky looks the limit for Autumn Glow, whose race record stands at a perfect 11 from 11, headed by three Group 1 wins, which could swell to four should she maintain her foot-perfect career in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at Randwick on April 11.

And for Silverdale Farm, there can be no better advertisement for what they can produce.

Rob Petith, Silverdale manager, said: “Autumn Glow’s fantastic for Silverdale, fantastic for the sales company, fantastic for the breeders and fantastic for racing enthusiasts. She captured the imagination of the public and we obviously feel very fortunate to have been able to play a part in her development. It’s a huge thrill, it really is. She’s very special.

“She was very special from the very first time we saw her, she was a beautiful filly to do anything with. The wonderful attitude you see at the races now, that’s what she was like at Silverdale.”

Autumn Glow came under the hammer with stellar credentials. Out of three-time South African Grade 1 winner Via Africa (Var), the filly is a three-quarter sister to Newgate’s Golden Rose (Gr 1, 1200m) winner In The Congo (Snitzel). Petith said her star quality shone through and was easy to spot.

“She was definitely something out of the box and she just caught your attention,” he said. “She conserved energy and was very efficient with the way she moved, which was one of the things we really loved about her.

Rob Petith (Credit: Inglis)

“I have three beautiful kids and naturally take a lot of pictures of them, but for that period when she was at Silverdale I think I took more photos of Autumn Glow when you look back through my phone.

“It was a huge thrill to sell her for $1.8 million and a lot of people ask now if we wish we’d have kept her and of course who wouldn’t? But we’re a commercial farm, so we took her to sale and presented her as well as we could.

“The market was able to work out what she was worth and she found some fantastic owners in Arrowfield and Hermitage. It's great for the farm and hopefully we’ve got the next Autumn Glow standing in one of the boxes at Riverside right now.”

Since presenting its first yearling draft at Magic Millions in January 2021, Silverdale has come a long way in a relatively short period of time. Petith said the meticulous approach taken by Grant and his team of investors has allowed the farm to thrive.

The attention to detail at Silverdale is amazing. It’s the infrastructure and the money that’s been put into developing the farm and turning it into an incredible place to rear racehorses and athletes. It’s the pedantic and meticulous approach we manage those horses with and the team we assemble around us to do the best by those horses

Rob Petith

“Steve and Kenny [Lowe] and the other guys who invest in the bloodstock and their other shareholders have been out and have been accumulating a really impressive group of mares without going and buying the top-priced mares,” he said. “It’s exciting to see them being mated well to proven stallions to give them an opportunity.

“The attention to detail at Silverdale is amazing. It’s the infrastructure and the money that’s been put into developing the farm and turning it into an incredible place to rear racehorses and athletes. It’s the pedantic and meticulous approach we manage those horses with and the team we assemble around us to do the best by those horses.

“We buy some expensive mares, but we’re still trying to find value like anyone else. We work very hard, but they still have to tick certain boxes and it’s a long game. We try to breed the mares to the most proven option that they justify for their own value.”

Over the course of the two-day sale, Silverdale will offer 14 quality yearlings - 11 fillies and three colts - by some of the best sires in the world, the perfect snapshot of the onus the farm places on quality rather than quantity.

Petith said: “I said to Steve [Grant] before the sale, it’s a very nice bunch of horses and you’d want to race any one of them,” he said. “It’s an exciting draft by some amazing stallions out of some beautiful, fast mares.

“You need those deep pages and those black-type horses and I’m confident that we have that. You look at our 14 horses and line them up, they line up on paper, but they are all beautiful physical types - there is a lot to be excited about.

“Easter is where you bring quality and that is how I summed up Autumn Glow and I could definitely use that word to summarise our whole draft.”

Silverdale could be responsible for early fireworks with the farm set to offer two lots in the first stanza of trade, led by a Zoustar (Northern Meteor) filly (Lot 9) whose half-brother has been advertising the family’s credentials on the track this season.

The filly is out of the Listed-placed winner Paredo (Better Than Ready), a $400,000 pickup for Silverdale at the Inglis Chairman’s Sale in 2023 when carrying this year’s Todman Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) victor Paradoxium (Extreme Choice) in utero. The farm enjoyed almost instant reward when selling the son of Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt) to Bjorn Baker, Jim Clarke and Ridgmont for $400,000 at Magic Millions the following year.

After last year’s fine result, Petith is confident this year’s offering can continue the mare’s good results in the sales ring.

“She loves her work. She’s broad through the hip with big wide hocks, she has a good action on her,” he said.

Having pinhooked Autumn Glow, buyers will no doubt be intrigued to inspect this year’s offering of yearlings the Silverdale team secured as weanlings.

Among the cohort this year is a filly by Darley’s former stalwart Exceed And Excel (Danehill) (Lot 362) who was plucked from Burnewang North Pastoral’s draft for $320,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast National Weanling Sale last year.

The youngster is out of the Queensland Listed winner Je Suis Belle (Bel Esprit), meaning she is bred on the same cross as one of Silverdale’s leading graduates, Group 2 winner Eneeza, who realised $1.1 million on the Gold Coast in 2023.

Petith said: “The filly out of Je Suis Belle is a lovely type and she is bred on the same cross as Eneeza who we sold a few years back and she was a Group 2-winning two-year-old who won the Percy Sykes, the Ottawa Stakes and the Merson Cooper for Kia Ora and TFI.

“It’s the same Exceed / Bel Esprit cross and she’s a gorgeous filly. We bought her as a weanling and she’s done very well. She’s pure speed and she looks like a two-year-old, she actually looks like Eneeza.”

The other pinhook (Lot 74) in the draft is a sister to Tea Rose Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) runner-up Artistic Venture (Trapeze Artist) who was added to the Silverdale fold at a cost of $70,000.

Petith said: “We’ve got the only Trapeze Artist in the sale and she’s a full-sister to Artistic Venture. Trapeze is doing a brilliant job at the minute and she’s a lovely filly.”

Eneeza’s dam, South Australian Group 2 scorer Sweet Sherry (Bel Esprit), will be represented by an I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) filly (Lot 133), whose physical traits remind Petith of the farm’s leading star.

“There are certainly hints of Autumn Glow there - she’s very special,” he said. “You should see the way she moves. She has a lovely temperament and a good brain. She’s going down very well.”

Buyers flock to the Easter sale not only to source elite racing prospects, but also to strengthen future broodmare bands and stallion rosters and given the recent results, I Am Invincible will be a target for both those buying camps over the two days of trade.

The son of Invincible Spirit (Green Desert) is carving out a reputation as a world-leading sire of sires, with his son Home Affairs having sired last weekend’s Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Guest House, underscoring the ability consistently shown by the the Yarraman Park stallion’s other son and barnmate, Hellbent.

Silverdale have covered their bases in terms of colts by Vinnie and will offer two this week. The first (Lot 78) is out of the stakes-placed winner Sense Of Hite (Street Sense), who showed her aptitude at paddocks when throwing Quintessa (Pierro), who made it on to the podium in the Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m).

The second colt (Lot 150) by the four-time champion stallion is the second foal out of the brilliant Group 3-winning mare Threeood (Star Witness).

Lot 150: I Am Invincible ex Threeood colt (Credit: Inglis)

“He’s a proper colt - he’s a beauty,” said Petith. “Threeood is a lovely Star Witness mare we bought from Tricolours. This is only her second foal and her first, a Zoustar filly, made $600,000.

“He has always been a nice colt, but he’s really bulled up recently. He’s presenting very well and has a real stallion’s head on him. He’s an exciting horse, and the mare is back in foal to Vinnie now based on the quality of what we’re offering this year.”

For Silverdale, it’s a long-game philosophy, producing elite athletes rather than chasing short-term wins, that continues to define the farm’s rise.

“To play that long game we want to produce elite athletes that allow the farm to continue to develop and enhance its reputation,” Petith said. “It’s incredible to think that Silverdale in six years has gone from its first yearling draft to having a good brand and reputation who offer a good product.”

Legacy Bound and Tycoon Star clash at Flemington as siblings head for the Easter Sale

Legacy Bound (Credit: Racing Photos)

Many eyes around Riverside will be glued to screens just after 3pm on Saturday to take in the VRC Sprint Classic (Listed, 1200m) for three-year-olds at Flemington.

The race might not quite be the highlight of a meeting featuring the Australian Cup (Gr 1, 2000m), and much attention on the day will also be drawn to Rosehill’s dual Group 1 card.

But there’ll be intense interest in the Sprint Classic from the point of view of the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale starting the next day, with two key chances - linked by Written Tycoon (Iglesia) - having siblings to go under the hammer.

Robbie Griffiths’ exciting gelding Legacy Bound, by Written Tycoon’s (Iglesia) burgeoning sire son Ole Kirk, is second favourite at around $3.40 as he seeks back-to-back wins and a fifth from seven starts.

His owners Vinery Stud will offer his sister on day one of the Easter sale, as Lot 61.

And Legacy Bound’s equal topweight in the set weights and penalties event is a son of Written Tycoon in Tycoon Star, who’ll resume seeking a third victory at start number 12.

With all of the colt’s headgear removed by his trainers Team Hayes, his chief owners - and Written Tycoon’s home stud - Yulong will also be hoping for a forward showing as they prepare to offer his brother at Riverside on Monday, as Lot 439.

Both young sprinters will likely clash on a bigger stage later in the autumn in Morphettville’s The Goodwood (Gr 1, 1200m), also set weights and penalties, on May 9, but Saturday’s meeting shapes as a juicy first round bout.

Legacy Bound is the first horse Griffiths has trained for Vinery, retained to carry the green with the white V after being withdrawn from the 2024 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

After winning his first two starts last autumn including Adelaide’s Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m), Legacy Bound produced another first-up victory in the spring, assuaging his trainer’s fears about a first look at the Flemington straight by taking the Poseidon Stakes (Listed, 1100m).

The gelding finished just behind the headline grabbers in his two other spring runs, also up the Flemington straight, with a fourth in the Danehill Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) and a highly meritorious third in the Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m), behind Tentyris (Street Boss) and the reopposing My Gladiola (I Am Invincible).

Tentyris and My Gladiola, the filly who also ran second in the Danehill, franked the Coolmore form by coming home in that order again first-up in February’s Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m).

Tycoon Star (Credit: Sportpix)

Both then finished unplaced in the Newmarket Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m), but My Gladiola is currently favourite for the Sprint Classic at around $2.50, as she shapes to again meet Legacy Bound, who kept his first-up record intact with his second Flemington straight win on March 7, in a quality handicap over 1100 metres.

Vinery general manager Adam White said the stud was hoping for big things this weekend from both Legacy Bound and his little sister.

“He was good in the spring, running third in the Coolmore behind Tentyris and My Gladiola, and they ran the quinella in the Lightning, so the form out of the Coolmore has been very strong,” White told ANZ News.

White said Legacy Bound’s younger sister was “a very high quality filly” who, like her brother, could be expected to run at two but improve into her three-year-old season.

By Vinery’s champion first season sire Ole Kirk, Legacy Bound is the fourth foal, and Lot 61 the fifth, of Sanaya (More Than Ready), a Vinery homebred who won at 1500 metres at Kembla Grange among 15 starts.

Her dam Astrodame (Flying Spur) was a second-tier winner of the MVRC Stocks Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) at five, and recorded eight stakes placings.

White said Sunday’s filly had thrown more to her damsire - Vinery’s former star shuttler More Than Ready (Southern Halo) - than Legacy Bound.

“She’s a well balanced filly, and probably has a bit more of a More Than Ready influence than Legacy Bound had. You can see it in the head and in her nice dark brown colouring,” White said.

“She’s going to develop a lot further yet. Like Legacy Bound she could be quite talented at two but get better as she gets to three. She’s got that sort of pedigree underneath her as well.”

Griffiths said he believed a “bigger and stronger” Legacy Bound was ready this campaign to cement his place in the top echelon of his crop.

“Yeah definitely,” he told ANZ. “We want to have a crack at The Goodwood, so we’d like to think he’s capable of doing that.”

While Griffiths had been wary of the Flemington straight the first time around for Legacy Bound, he said the budding star sprinter now looked like a natural at the course.

“He certainly does - he’s been very effective every time he’s been there,” he said.

“He’s shaping up really well for Saturday, and came through his return run in good order. He galloped in good style on Monday morning, and we’re looking forward to the challenge of My Gladiola.

“She’s had the upper hand on us so far, but we’ll see how we go. Legacy Bound might be a bit bigger and stronger this time around, and having a good win rate of four from six helps you going into any race.

“And even though the filly beat us home in the Coolmore, what I love is that her form has stood up really well.

“I think it’s a really good crop of three-year-olds, and with Tentyris, My Gladiola and Legacy Bound, I think it’ll be a good challenge for my bloke to step up, but I think he’ll give it one helluva shake.”

Griffiths said he would take great interest in Legacy Bound’s sister when she entered the sales ring at Riverside.

“No doubt me and plenty of others, unfortunately,” he said with a smile. “I can’t hide her. I’m sure she’ll be well sought after, being a full to Legacy Bound.”

As with Legacy Bound, Tycoon Star’s connections believe the colt has returned this autumn a more powerful horse, having benefited from a long summer break with the late autumn Adelaide carnival in mind.

By Yulong’s evergreen 23-year-old Written Tycoon, Tycoon Star is the first foal, and Lot 439 the third, of Miss Iano (Equiano), a multiple city winner of eight races up to 1200 metres who was placed in a Melbourne Group 3.

Yulong bought Tycoon Star at the Magic Millions Gold Coast National Weanling Sale for $350,000, from Milburn Creek’s draft. He was then bought by the Hayes brothers’ Lindsay Park for $400,000 at Magic Millions Gold Coast, with Yulong retaining a majority share.

Impressed with Tycoon Star’s quality, Yulong then bought Miss Iano for $310,000 in foal to Home Affairs (I Am Invincible) from Milburn Creek’s consignment at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale. Lindsay Park bought the resultant colt at the Gold Coast for $475,000, in league with Laurel Oak Bloodstock.

JD Hayes joked that it wouldn’t be the worst outcome if Lot 439 didn’t sell, perhaps giving Lindsay Park three sons of Miss Iano.

“Hopefully Yulong decide to keep him and race him with us,” he quipped.

Lot 439: Written Tycoon ex Miss Iano colt (Credit: Inglis)

Tycoon Star debuted successfully, also up the Flemington straight, in the Maribyrnong Plate (Gr 3, 1000m), and three starts later flashed home for third in the 2025 Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m).

His spring was fair, including a second-up victory in Caulfield’s McNeil Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) and a sixth in the Coolmore, beaten 4.55 lengths.

Team Hayes experimented with his headgear last spring, from blinkers to winkers and visors, the last of which have been removed for Saturday following two pleasing jump-out seconds without them at Flemington.

“We tinkered with a few things last prep because he was always a little bit keen,” Hayes said.

“He seems to have come back better. He’s jumped out super, so we’ve taken all the headgear off and we’re just going to trust him. It’s a competitive race, but he’s quite good on his day.

“He needs to improve on his last prep, although he was able to win a stakes race and was thereabouts competing in the hottest races, so it was definitely a pass mark.

“We’ve targeted the Adelaide carnival with him so we can give him a bit more time off from the spring into the autumn, and hopefully it pays dividends. He does look like he has improved, and if that’s the case he’ll be pretty exciting.

“It’s a tough race on Saturday. We’re just more excited to see how he goes with a view to the rest of the autumn, but I think he’s a good each-way hope.”

While Tycoon Star has shone on the track, Yulong’s sales and nominations manager Harry King said his younger brother was a better looking yearling, with stronger notes of his French damsire Equiano (Acclamation) and second damsire Not A Single Doubt (Redoute’s Choice).

“He’s definitely right up there as one of the best colts we’ve brought to the sale,” King said.

“But he’s a little bit different to some of the Written Tycoons you might see. He’s got a lovely European flair to him that we’ve seen through that Equiano broodmare sire line, and that ties in very nicely with Not A Single Doubt. He’s got that prettiness in his head from Not A Single Doubt, and he’s a Redoute’s [Choice] looking horse, with the nice leg and motor of Written Tycoon.

“He’s very balanced, he’s exceptionally light on his feet, and he’s got incredibly good hocks. He’s got a lot more elegance about him than his brother. Being the third foal out of the mare, he’s really now the complete package of what we wanted out of the mating.

“And in terms of being a sire, he’s potentially an outcross in terms of being by Written Tycoon and out of an Equiano mare. If he’s as good as his brother, he’s certainly looking at a future at stud the way he’s built.”

Among other Saturday runners with Easter sale ramifications:

King’s Secret, a Shalaa (Invincible Spirit) half-brother to Group 1 winner Private Eye (Al Maher), runs second-up as favourite in Rosehill’s Star Kingdom Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m). Goodwood Farm offers his half-sister by Anamoe (Street Boss) as Lot 257.

Celerity (Exceed And Excel) is another favourite, for the Bob Hoysted Stakes (Listed, 1000m). Longwood Thoroughbred Farm has her half-sister by I Am Invincible for sale as Lot 285.

Arkansaw Kid (Harry Angel) is second elect for Adelaide’s Matrice Stakes (Listed, 1200m). Sledmere Stud offers his full sister as Lot 316.

And Star Je Taime (Snitzel) debuts in Flemington’s Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m). Her full sister will be offered by Widden Stud as Lot 121.

Mark Twain all set for Australian Cup tilt

Mark Twain (Credit: Sportpix)

Having won the Roy Higgins (Listed, 2600m) on the corresponding card two years ago, Mark Twain (Shocking) will line up at Flemington on Saturday bidding to land an upset victory in the Australian Cup (Gr 1, 2000m). Following his Roy Higgins success, the now six-year-old suffered a tendon injury while preparing for the 2024 spring. Trained then by Roger James and Robert Wellwood, the former Kiwi-based gelding will be making his second outing for the Phillip Stokes yard having run third in the Blamey Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) last month. "Four weeks between runs with a jump-out in between, I feel that's the best way to have him, fresh with three weeks being the minimum," Stokes said. "It's a hard race, but the favourite [Birdman] was the one that beat us [last time], and we can only improve and I think the Flemington 2000 [metres] is ideal. He ticks a lot of boxes, but we need to see it again, and I'm sure we will because we've been very happy with his work. He's very relaxed and happy, so we go there quietly confident. After his issues, he may not have come up last prep, and they were racing him every two weeks. The prep previous to that, he was going a lot better, and I noticed they were spacing his runs a lot more and he was racing well. He was working well leading into his first-up run and I tipped him to a lot of people, saying to have something each-way on him. We know he's a good horse when he's right, so let's hope he's somewhere near his best."

Philia to line up in Australian Cup for Vandyke

David Vandyke is not getting ahead of himself leading into Saturday's Australian Cup with Group 2 winner Philia (All Too Hard), but he is hopeful of a big run from the mare. The four-year-old daughter of All Too Hard (Casino Prince) steps up in distance to 2000 metres for the first time this campaign after a last-start fourth behind Treasurethe Moment (Alabama Express) in last weekend's Sunline Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) at Caulfield. “It’s been more frustrating than anything with her in Melbourne,” Vandyke told Racing Queensland. “She should have won the Matron Stakes [fourth] at Flemington when she was held up between the 350 and 100 metres and she would have run third in the Sunline had she not wobbled around the turn. She got lost on the corner but finished off the race well and is looking for further. She’s been more of a frustration than anything else." On this weekend's task in the Australian Cup, Vandyke added: "It’s a big step up in class, distance and backing up seven days after her last race is a bit of a concern. I think 2000 metres will suit her this week and it’s about her best distance. She’s never backed up so we’re not going into the race thinking she’s going to win.”

Bedggood stablemates to face off at Flemington

Stablemates Mornington Glory (Shalaa) and Johnny Rocker (Jukebox) will line up against each other at Flemington on Saturday when they clash in the Bob Hoysted Handicap (Listed, 1000m). Trained by Gavin Bedggood, Moir Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) hero Mornington Glory will be having his first outing in almost seven months. "Post Sydney, we sent him off for an MRI and scintigraphy, and he came back with pod lesions, or severe bone bruising," Bedggood said. "He had a three-month paddock break, a long rehab and returned with a month on the water walker, a month on the sandhills [at Cranbourne] and then a month of pacework. He's got a really good base of fitness on him. He won his last trial, but I would say I have seen him trial better than what he did. He's a horse that has not performed at his best first-up, but I would be disappointed if he didn't run well. He's got to put his hand up and show me something in his first two runs, otherwise we might pull the pin. I don't want to be that trainer that had a good horse that kept on banging it around for the sake of running it. He owes us nothing and we owe him everything." Meanwhile, Johnny Rocker will be making his stable debut having moved from Bjorn Baker, for whom he made just one start after previously being in the care of Nick Ryan at Flemington. "We've probably had him for six weeks and he and Mornington Glory have pretty much been workmates," Bedggood said. "I thought he galloped fantastic at Caulfield the other week but trialled below par at Cranbourne. His fitness is very good. He lives out in a yard. He's gone from being boxed at Flemington and Warwick Farm, so we're trying to get him right mentally."

Bargain buy Bright Legend chasing Cup berth

Bright Legend (Churchill) will bid to earn herself a ticket into November's Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) when she lines up in Saturday's Roy Higgins at Flemington. The five-year-old daughter of Churchill (Galileo), who was purchased by her trainer Joanne Mugavin for just $2,500 during the 2025 Inglis June (Early) Online Sale, recorded a massive breakthrough victory last time out when landing the Torney Night Cup (Listed, 2500m) at Pakenham as a $15 chance and Mugavin admits a chance in this weekend's Roy Higgins is just as big. “This is absolutely huge,” Mugavin told Racing.com. “It’s really, really exciting and it’d mean the absolute world if we could actually get the job done tomorrow. You always dream of having a runner in the Melbourne Cup but if we could actually make it happen, it’s a whole new ball game. She’s improved so much. Last prep, she was probably a bit lightly framed and things like that but this prep, she had a good spell in the paddock, she came back twice the size she was when we got her, and she’s kept that nice size about her all throughout her prep. She gives 110 per cent in all of her runs, so she always tucks up a bit after her runs. I’m definitely happier with her this prep than last. There’s more classy horses going for this race than there were the Torney Night Cup. I think she’ll be running really, really well but just whether she measures up to those more seasoned horses, well, time will tell.”

Berry looking forward to Soul Of Spain ride

Tommy Berry is looking forward to getting back aboard Soul Of Spain (Phoenix Of Spain) as the Chris Waller-trained gelding continues his march towards next month's Sydney Cup (Gr 1, 3200m). Having run second in the Sky High Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m) last time out behind Vauban (Galiway), the progressive five-year-old will step back up in trip for Saturday's Tancred Stakes (Gr 1, 2400m) at Rosehill. "Obviously, the step up to 2400 metres is going to suit on the way to a Sydney Cup . . . although, he's got to meet some pretty handy horses at around the same weight," Berry said. "Last 'prep' he was doing things on raw ability when he was coming through the grades, but he is a lot more seasoned. Chris Waller got to travel him a little bit last preparation, up in Queensland and back to Sydney, and usually that's very good for stayers. He has come back a more professional racehorse, and he's got a really good turn of speed. He's ready to take the next step and Chris always uses a method getting to his grand finals, and the race on Saturday is one he's used previously to get his better horses to a Sydney Cup."

Caviar Heights to take in Neville Sellwood

Having accompanied his stablemate Dubai Honour (Pride Of Dubai) on the trip over from the UK to Australia, the William Haggas-trained Caviar Heights (Sea The Stars) will himself have a Group-race task at Rosehill this weekend when he contests the Neville Sellwood Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m). The five-year-old gelding will be taking on Yulong's 4.8 million guineas purchase Barnavara (Calyx), and Haggas' assistant trainer Isabella Paul admits that task will be a difficult one for the Listed winner. "That's going to be tough for us," Paul said. "She is a top class filly. But I'm very happy, I don't think we could have him in a better place. It always helps having Dubai Honour down here because he is such a pro. The other horse has followed his lead. I'm really happy with where they're at. They look fantastic in their coats, they are maintaining their weight well, and I'm really looking forward to Saturday. He probably wants to be fairly handy, but he just has that tendency to slightly over-race. We saw it in his last run last season. He led and he was pestered, and it didn't suit him at all, and he finished fifth of six. Hopefully, if we can just get him to do it the right way, he's got a big future ahead of him."

Morphettville option for Almost An Angel

Robbie Griffiths has decided on Saturday's Dequetteville Stakes (Listed, 1050m) at Morphettville for his filly Almost An Angel (So You Think), instead of tackling the Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Flemington. A debut winner at Caulfield Heath in November, Almost An Angel contested the Blue Diamond Prelude (F) (Gr 2, 1100m) at Caulfield, finishing fifth, before heading to the Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) where she ran 11th. "We're keen to get black type because she's got the talent and deserves to have it," Griffiths said. "She ran fifth in the [Blue Diamond] Prelude and if she runs fourth, she gets the big black writing next to her name. Damian Lane was pretty happy with her that day and said we should have a throw at the stumps in the big one and she drew poorly and got into a bad spot, so it was a forgive run. She was in the [VRC] Sires' but she drew wide and had a bit of an eye infection, so we decided to miss that and switch our attention to one of these races. We sent her down the beach, she's done some steady work, and here we are. She's never been down the straight, so that was a negative, but the 1200 metres would suit. But in saying that she's won at 1000 [metres] at Caulfield Heath and she was terrific at 1100 [metres] at Caulfield, so you would think 1050 metres on a big track at Morphettville would be good. There is the travel over to Adelaide, but Morphettville is the better option, so we'll head over and give it a shot."

Jigsaw confirmed in Ladbrokes slot for Quokka

Jigsaw (Credit: Sportpix)

Last-start William Reid Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) victor Jigsaw (Manhattan Rain) will line up in next month's The Quokka (1200m) after being confirmed as taking the slot of Ladbrokes in the $5 million contest. The Cindy Alderson-trained sprinter is set to line up in Perth’s richest race on April 18 as one of the leading contenders chasing a seventh straight win, with Logan Bates retaining the ride. “Perth is a long way from home, but this horse gives us a heap of reasons to make the trip,” Alderson told Racing.com. “Jigsaw has a remarkable will to win and he’s not giving me any indications that it’s going to stop, so The Quokka gives us an incredible opportunity. We’re thrilled to partner with Ladbrokes, they are great supporters of racing and we are proud that Jigsaw can fly the flag.”

Fillies dominate trio of juvenile trials

Lindsay Park’s recent Ottawa Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m) winner Medicinal (Brazen Beau) was one of three juvenile trial winners at Randwick on Friday. Ridden by Nash Rawiller, the Ben, Will and JD Hayes-trained filly defeated Enshooda (Zoustar) by 1.5 lengths over 1050 metres and looks set to return to stakes company in the near future. The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Home Invasion (Home Affairs) is another that looks set to return to the track soon after scoring by 1.7 lengths in her 745-metre heat. Ridden by Adam Hyeronimus, the daughter of Home Affairs (I Am Invincible) defeated Belvante (Farnan) in a first appearance since December. Her sole racecourse start to date resulted in a fifth-placed finish in the Gimcrack Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m) in October. The final juvenile trial saw the Waterhouse and Bott-trained Lumbini (Russian Revolution) score by 0.9 lengths over Ti Amo (Zoustar). A winner of the Magic Millions The Debut (1000m) back in December, the daughter of Russian Revolution (Snitzel) has made three starts since and was last seen running second in the Magic Night Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Rosehill on March 14.

Ascot card moved to Wednesday, Narrogin postponed

Saturday's race meeting at Ascot, featuring the WA Oaks (Gr 3, 2400m) and Melvista Stakes (Listed, 2200m), has been transferred to Wednesday due to deteriorating weather conditions and an unfavourable forecast for the metropolitan area. Ascot has received 27mm of rain since 9am on Friday morning, with the Bureau of Meteorology advising rain will continue overnight and up to a further 35mm forecast for Saturday morning as the remnants of Cyclone Narelle pass by Perth. Racing WA chief racing officer David Hunter said the decision was made to provide certainty for participants and the broader industry. “While the current condition of the Ascot track may allow the meeting to proceed at present, the forecast for the metropolitan area is not in our favour,” he said. “We have transferred the meeting to Wednesday, following consultation with Perth Racing, to provide certainty as early as possible for the industry.” Race fields will remain unchanged, with race times for Wednesday’s Ascot meeting to be published as soon as available. The Belmont Park meeting initially scheduled for Wednesday will now be run on Thursday. Meanwhile, Saturday's Narrogin Cup meeting has, at this stage, been postponed to Sunday. Track conditions are continuing to be monitored, with further communication to be provided on Saturday. Sunday’s Geraldton meeting has been abandoned due to the forecast impact of Cyclone Narelle in the Mid West region.

Marotiri Molly hunting Group 1 crown

Marotiri Molly (Credit: Race Images)

Group 2 winner Marotiri Molly (Per Incanto) has just had the one try in elite company and trainer Matt Dixon is hoping second time’s a charm when she contests Saturday’s Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at Trentham. The Upper Hutt track has been a happy hunting ground for the daughter of Per Incanto (Street Cry), who has recorded three of her seven victories on the track, including the Manawatu Challenge Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m). She also made her Group 1 debut at the track in last year’s Thorndon Mile (Gr 1, 1600m), finishing equal-fifth behind Provence (Savabeel), and returned this year to finish runner-up in the race, which has been downgraded to a Group 2. That result has been bookended by two further Group placings in the Manawatu Challenge Stakes and Cuddle Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m), and Dixon said his mare has progressed nicely from her last start performance. “I have been really pleased with her progress since the Cuddle Stakes,” he said. “I always thought she was going to be a bit vulnerable in the Cuddle Stakes in the fact that it was six weeks between runs leading into that, but I was really pleased with how she ran there and she has definitely improved a lot, which she will need to. I am very happy with her." Marotiri Molly has been building towards the New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes, with Dixon having circled it as her primary target this season, and he is looking forward to testing her against a strong line-up. “She has got a great record there [Trentham] and she deserves her chance,” he said.

Provence seeking fairytale ending at Trentham

Multiple Group 1 winner Provence is looking for a fairytale ending when she heads to Trentham on Saturday to tackle the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes. Bred by Tony Rider, the now six-year-old mare has been raced by the Milan Park principal in partnership with Social Racing, for whom she has won seven of her 23 starts for trainer Stephen Marsh, including the Mufhasa Classic (Gr 1, 1600m), Thorndon Mile and last year’s New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes. Two of those Group 1s have been achieved at Trentham, while the latter has been transferred to the Upper Hutt track this year, and Marsh said it would be great to end her stellar career on a high before she is offered at Inglis’ Chairman’s Sale in May. “She is going great and the mile at Trentham is tailor-made for her,” Marsh said. “It is a very open field and coming back from the 2000-metre [Bonecrusher New Zealand Stakes] certainly doesn’t worry me, her work has been terrific. It would be brilliant to go out on a high, she has done a marvellous job – a three-time Group 1 winner and multiple other placings. She is a great type, so she is going to be very well sought after.”

Stakes assignments looming for Elle Sourit

Andrew Forsman is weighing up between two black-type targets for his unbeaten mare Elle Sourit (Ocean Park) and her performance in the Waikato Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association Mile (1600m) at Te Aroha on Saturday will dictate which path she takes. The four-year-old daughter of Ocean Park (Thorn Park) has shown plenty of ability to date, winning all four of her starts, including last start in the Entain/NZB Insurance Pearl Series Final (1400m) in front of a bumper crowd at Ellerslie on Champions Day. "It is a race we had set her for for a little while so it was nice to get the result and Sam [McNab] rode her very well,” Forsman said. “She has come through that first-up run well, we wanted to give her a little bit of time to get over it and I am very happy with her.” Forsman will now head to Te Aroha with her on a fact-finding mission, with the Cambridge trainer eager to see how she performs over a mile, with next month’s Easter Handicap (Gr 3, 1600m) and Travis Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m) both on the radar. “We are probably thinking the Easter, but that all depends on how she performs at a mile, so we will decide whether it is the Easter or we wait another week and go to the Travis over a little bit further,” Forsman said. Elle Sourit will be joined in Saturday’s race by stablemate Pacifico (Ardrossan). “I thought his run last start [seventh in Japan Trophy] was full of merit,” Forsman said. “He is probably better off in the weights this time around. He is going to lap up the rain that has been around. He has taken a couple of runs to get to fitness, but he is near peak now.”

HK: Bulb General to make long-awaited return at Sha Tin

Bulb General (Credit: HKJC)

After months on the sidelines, Bulb General’s (Embellish) comeback takes centre stage at Sha Tin on Sunday. Bulb General is the star of Jamie Richards’ yard, and the third-year handler has been bringing the son of Embellish (Savabeel) back to full fitness after he suffered a right fore ligament injury in October last year, which derailed his rapid progress towards the lucrative Four-Year-Old Classic Series. Richards had hoped for a successful Classic Series campaign with the gelding, whom he sourced as a yearling at the Karaka Sale in his native New Zealand. He was left disappointed when the galloper suffered a “heartbreaking” setback just days after sealing his most impressive victory to date, a two-and-three-quarter-length demolition in a Class 3 1200-metre Sha Tin contest. After 178 days on the sidelines, Bulb General, who has drawn gate seven and will bid for his fourth straight win under Zac Purton on Sunday, is ready to return to action in the Class 2 CW Chu Alumni Handicap (1200m). “I thought his recent trial at Happy Valley was pretty good, and we just have to trust that he turns up on race day,” said Richards. “He’s going up into Class 2 for the first time, which is never easy. He was probably the best four-year-old in town in the early part of the season, and then he went amiss. But he’s come back well from that. He looks fantastic, and I’m very happy with him. He’s sort of a run-to-run proposition, so I don’t think there’s any point getting too far ahead of ourselves. But whether he stays at 1200 [metres] or stretches out a bit further after this first-up run, we’ll just have to wait and see. Let’s get through Sunday and work it out from there.”
