Woodside Park Stud has announced its service fees for a roster that ensures its Victorian and interstate clients will be spoilt for choice in 2026.
Situated on 300 acres of quality pastures in the Macedon Ranges, Woodside Park is owned by Eddie Hirsch and remains one of Victoria’s largest breeding operations with six stallions and a prized portfolio of black-type broodmares.
Heading the line-up this year for his second book is Group 1 sprinter-miler Celestial Legend who returned an excellent fertility-rate first-up and is primed to cover another good book of mares this year.
Celestial Legend will stand for $24,200 (inc GST) alongside Benbatl (GB), Shalaa (Ire), Rich Enuff, Foxwedge and Delaware (GB).
“He was an outstanding racehorse winning the Randwick Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) clocking 1:33.94s despite sitting three-wide without cover,” Woodside Park’s Stallion Nominations Manager Mark Dodemaide recalled. “And he followed up with a Doncaster Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) victory with a spectacular turn of foot.
“He was tough as nails in the Randwick Guineas and absolutely brilliant in the Doncaster. Characteristics rarely found in the same stallion package. He’s 16 hands and a good-looking, athletic grey horse”
Celestial Legend is a son of Dundeel (High Chaparral) who sired Idle Flyer to win the Queen of the Turf Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at Randwick on Saturday. She’s one of 40 black-type winners by Dundeel who is making a name as a sire of sires through Castelvecchio and Super Seth.
His dam Sarraqua (Snitzel) is a three-quarter sister to the Redoute’s Choice (Danehill) brothers Mustaaqeem and Rafeef who were Group 1 winners in South Africa. His third-dam is responsible for Celestial Legend being a grey. Rainbow Cake (Mr Eats) is by a grandson of Zeddaan (Grey Sovereign) and grand-dam National Colour (National Assembly), a three time Group 1 winner in South Africa was also grey.
The sireline is known in this part of the world through Adraan (Zeddaan) who sired an amazing 7 stakes-winners from just 22 starters topped by Group 1-winning filly Magic Flute (VATC One Thousand Guineas 1600m & AJC Doncaster Hcp 1600m).
Benbatl is a three-time Group 1-winning son of breed-shaper Dubawi (Dubai Millennium) and will be covering his third book at Woodside Park this year.
Benbatl is a very good-looking stallion. A touch bigger and longer than his champion sire. If you like Dubawi, you will love Benbatl.
“He was a proper racehorse with a World Thoroughbred Ranking of 125 and twice, crowned Champion Older Miler in Great Britain”.
“Benbatl won at the elite level in the Caulfield Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m), Meydan Dubai Turf (Gr 1, 1800m) and Munich Bayerisches Zuchtrennen (Gr 1, 2000m) and for that split second on straightening caused that Moonee Valley crowd to hold it’s breath in Winx’s fourth W S Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) victory at Moonee Valley.
Pedigree-wise Benbatl is a half brother to Elmalka (Kingman), winner of the 1000 Guineas Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) at Newmarket . He is out of Nahrain (Selkirk), winner of the Prix de L’Opera (Gr 1, 2000m) at Longchamp & The Flower Bowl Stakes (Gr 1, 1 3/8m). Interestingly, his fourth dam is the mighty New Zealand mare La Mer (Copenhagen).
His first foals here are in the Dubawi mould,” Dodemaide said. “Most have that typical dishy Dubawi head. Very muscular, good shoulders and hind quarters, with nice short cannons.”
Dual Group 1 winner and Group 1 producing stallion Shalaa has made Woodside his home since 2023 and being a son of Invincible Spirit (Ire) can only promote the profile.
Shalaa has sired 23 Stakes winners of 40 Stakes races and the latest to arrive is last month’s Star Kingdom Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) winner Roselyn's Star. He is also the sire of recent black type winners Mornington Glory, Recommendation, Welwal, King’s Secret, Jennilala, among others.
“He’s an ideal VOBIS Gold and VOBIS Sires stallion,” Dodemaide said. “He’s also a proven two-year-old sire with six two-year-old black-type winners (and counting).”
“Frankie Dettori rated him the fastest 2yo he had ever ridden after they won the Middle Park Stakes and also said he didn’t meet a horse fast enough to lead him.”
Rich Enuff continues the Written Tycoon sireline at Woodside Park with a 72% strike-rate and a black-type tally in double figures after this season’s Melbourne black-type winners Abounding winner of the Tristac Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) and Stokke who won the Century Stakes (Listed, 1000m).
Rich Enuff was conceived at Woodside Park and developed into a brilliant spring 3YO, stringing together wins in the Danehill Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m), the Caulfield Guineas Prelude (Gr 3, 1400m) and the Mitchell McKenzie Stakes (Listed, 1200m). He ran the fastest time for a three-year-old down the straight-six at Flemington clocking 1.08.13s in the Danehill Stakes. A big, strong, well-balanced son of Written Tycoon, he appears to have a bias siring top-class fillies but there’s money to be made on his colts in the sales ring particularly for buyers from Hong Kong where he has sired 8 winners of 25 races topped by the John Size-trained Wunderbar.
Wunderbar will go down in the record books as the first horse to beat Ka Ying Rising (Shamexpress) at Sha Tin on New Year’s Day in 2024. The son of Rich Enuff confirmed that the result was no fluke when beating him again three weeks later, making him the only horse to have beaten Ka Ying Rising who has since been on a winning streak that currently sits at 19.
Foxwedge had sired 11 Stakes-winners when he arrived at Woodside and that total has steadily risen to 27 stakes-winners.
No son of Champion sire Fastnet Rock (Danehill) has produced more Group 1 winners. His Group 1 winners are Volpe Veloce, Railway Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m), Foxplay, Queen Of The Turf Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m), Run Fox Run, Cape Flying Championship (Gr 1, 1000m) in South Africa, Lunar Fox, Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) and Urban Fox, Pretty Polly Stakes (Gr 1, 1m 2f) at the Curragh.
Foxwedge is an outstanding type, being third top priced colt at the 2010 Inglis Easter Sale. On the racetrack, he beat champions Hay List (Statue Of Liberty) and Buffering (Mossman) to win the Gr 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley.
“You’re a good chance to breed a good sort at a $7,700 fee,” Dodemaide reasoned. “He’s one of the best value stallions in the state and a Foxwedge filly can win a decent race and be a valuable broodmare.”
Sons of superstar racehorse and champion sire Frankel (Galileo) are thin on the ground in Australia but breeders are cottoning on to Woodside Park resident Delaware.
“Delaware could be the dark horse of our roster,” Dodemaide claimed this week. “Breeders only want to talk about their Delaware foals and yearlings when they visit the farm.
Delaware was a fast 2YO winner over 1200m at Deauville and later won key three-year-old lead up races to the Poule d'Essai des Poulains (Gr 1, 1600m), often referred to as the French 2000 Guineas. His victories include the Prix Daphnis (Gr 3, 1600m) and the Prix Tourgeville (Listed, 1600m) at Deauville.
Delaware trained on to win the Danger's Hour Stakes (Listed, 1600m) on turf at Aqueduct in track record time of 1.33.67s for trainer Chad Brown and Juddmonte Farms.
Woodside is always an open door, encouraging people to make the trip, less than one hour from Melbourne in Tylden to visit their stallions at a time which is convenient for them.
