The Inglis HTBA Yearling Sale this Sunday provides a proven opportunity to buy bargain-priced colts and fillies now that the big players have already done their shopping at the majors.

While inspections began building at Riverside Stables on Thursday, Inglis Bloodstock CEO Sebastian Hutch was guarded about making predictions but was positive the 215-lot catalogue will continue the strong competition that has been a feature of the Inglis Yearling Sales Series this year.

What's On

“The prize-money they win will dramatically outweigh the cost on Sunday,” Hutch said. “The HTBA Sale gives everyone access to commercial yearlings, whether they are looking for horses to breeze in the spring, trial and trade, or just race for our tremendous prize-money in Australia.

“We have a broad cross-section of stallions and vendors represented in the catalogue. That’s pleasing and so is the fact that part of the commissions help the important work being done by the Hunter Thoroughbred Breeders' Association.”

The 2025 HTBA Yearling Sale grossed $4.55 million at an average of $21,900 off an 83 per cent clearance rate. That was an across-the-board increase in all three statistics from 2024 ($3.03 million - $18,700 - 80 per cent). A similar rise will be welcomed by the industry at a time when the economy is facing significant headwinds.

Established Hunter Valley studs Vinery, Widden, Newgate, Segenhoe, Amarina and Kingstar are represented and so are relative newcomers like Scone-based Forge Thoroughbreds.

Vinery Stud has a draft of 18 and they’re straight out of the blocks with an Exceedance (Exceed And Excel) colt catalogued as Lot 2, who is out of the placed Aga Khan-bred mare Sagamiyna (Azamour) – herself a half-sister to French Group 1 winner Sagawara (Shamardal).

Exceedance sired his sixth stakes winner last month when Cristal Clear scored first-up in the Ajax Stakes (Gr 2, 1500m) at Rosehill for Group One Thoroughbreds and Annabel and Rob Archibald.

Her half-sister Sass Appeal (So You Think) was a black-type winner of the Kewney Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) and their second dam Bollinger (Dehere) was successful in the 2003 Coolmore Classic (Gr 1, 1500m).

Exceedance also improved his two-year-old strike-rate last month with She's Extra (ATC All Too Hard Hcp) at Warwick Farm for Kris Lees and Hard To Exceed (BRC Maiden Plate) at Doomben for Peter Robl.

The consignment finishes with colts by Hellbent (I Am Invincible), Supido (Sebring) and Headwater (Exceed And Excel) and Vinery’s Harry Roach believes it will pay buyers to keep some of their powder dry until the last hour of trade.

The Hellbent colt (Lot 194) out of unraced mare Play Suit (Al Maher) is from a black-type family going back to South Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) winner English Wonder (Twig Moss) and her two Group 1-winning foals Dr Grace (Sir Tristram) (AJC Derby) and Asia (Danehill) (SAJC Oaks).

“He’s one of the standouts,” Roach said. “He’s a sharp, quality individual and could attract the Hong Kong trade.”

Hellbent is going great guns in Hong Kong with ten winners of 20 races headed by Inglis graduate Invincible Ibis who won the 2026 Hong Kong Derby (Listed, 2000m) for Aussie-expat Mark Newnham.

The Supido colt (Lot 196) out of winning mare Pocket Power (Giant’s Causeway) is a half-brother to Ramornie Handicap (Listed, 1200m) winner Sha Of Gomer (Shalaa) and they’re from a half-sister to the dam of multiple Group 1 winner Artorius (Flying Artie).

He’s being sold as agent for Greg Perry who dissolved his interest in Vinery, along with good mate Neil Werrett, in 2025.

“It’s an active family and one that we know well,” Roach said. “Sixties is a younger half-brother to Artorius and he’s won a Group 3 at Flemington and Group 2 at Rosehill this season.”

The Headwater colt (Lot 206) out of Perfectly Ready (More Than Ready) mare Ready To Order will be targeted by trainers and traders looking for a bargain.

“He’s a good-sized, strong colt,” Roach added. “And he could be a value buy parading so late in the day.”

Kingstar Farm has ten yearlings going under the hammer on Sunday and their draft also has an Artorius connection with his first-crop colt from Kiwi-bred mare Azarose (Azamour) (Lot 71).

“He’s a strong, attractive colt and the dam is a half-sister to Artistry,” Kingstar manager Adam Cook said.

Azarose is a half-sister to Artistry (Shamardal), who was a Group 3 winner of the Maybe Mahal Stakes (1400m) at Flemington, NJC Newmarket Handicap (1400m) and Maurice McCarten Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill for Peter and Paul Snowden and her first son Hopper (Snitzel) also won for the Snowdens at Warwick Farm.

Kingstar is represented by another first-crop sire with the In The Congo (Snitzel), who has a colt (Lot 158) out of the winning mare Left Reeling (Dundeel).

“He’s the mare’s first foal, too,” Cook said. “She’s a Randwick-winning daughter of Dundeel and the colt is a nice type with a good action.”

Kingstar owner Matthew Sandblom has supported Coolmore Stud sire Home Affairs (I Am Invincible) and that will prove a sound investment when his second-crop colt from Gwader Bay (Thronum) (Lot 130) parades on Sunday.

Home Affairs’ first-crop colt Guest House won the $5 million ATC Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Rosehill last month and his filly Gin Twist added the Redoute's Choice Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Caulfield last Saturday.

Kingstar’s Home Affairs colt is a good looker, a good mover and, being a November foal, he’s growing all the time.

Scone-based Forge Thoroughbreds owners Mitch Hamilton and Zoe Baylis have seven lots catalogued for the HTBA Sale and are hoping it’s just as rewarding as their first drafts to the Adelaide Magic Millions and Inglis Classic.

Before branching out on their own, Mitch worked as a farrier for Widden and Baramul Studs while Zoe was based at Widden and Bhima Stud.

“We had 100 per cent clearance rates at both sales this year and our Showtime colt sold for $110,000 at the Classic Sale,” Baylis said.

“We have some great clients and they helped by meeting the market.”

Forge Thoroughbreds has the only yearling by Coolmore shuttler St Mark's Basilica (Siyouni) in the HTBA Sale and his first Australian crop is headed by unbeaten Tasmanian Aristopolos.

The John Blacker-trained colt’s five-time winning run includes Listed victories in the Elwick Stakes (1100m) and Gold Sovereign Stakes (1200m).

The St Mark's Basilica colt (Lot 41) is out of the Kiwi black-type mare Upscale (Tavistock) and Baylis rates him a strong, forward type for the new season.

He will receive another update on Friday evening if Aristopolos makes it six straight in the Alfa Bowl (1200m) at Launceston.

The pick of the Forge Thoroughbreds consignment is Lot 120, a Capitalist (Written Tycoon) filly out of Irish-bred mare Fleeting Fancy (Galileo).

“She’s a stunner,” Baylis said. “A well grown physical and beautifully balanced”

Meanwhile, the Wild Ruler (Snitzel) colt (Lot 150) out of winning mare Kiss In The Rain (Manhattan Rain) is a half-brother to Hong Kong winner Happy Horse (Zoustar) and Baylis rates him a “straight-forward strong type who looks a get up and run two-year-old next season.”

Durable Miss Chanel earns Champagne Stakes shot

Miss Chanel (Tagaloa) has surprised connections with her toughness and consistency, earning a shot at Saturday’s Champagne Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at Randwick. Co-trainer Adrian Bott admitted the filly’s extended campaign had not been part of the original plan, with each run initially expected to be her last of the preparation. "This is her seventh run, which is a little bit unorthodox," Bott, who trains in partnership with Gai Waterhouse, said. "I can't say it's by design. She has been remarkably consistent, but each time I've thought it's possibly our last run for the preparation, she seems to have put in another improved run again and done well off the back of it. I am mindful that at some point, she is going to have that run that says she has come to the end of her campaign, and it's not going to be a surprise when she does. But off the back of what we've seen, she hasn't given us any indication in her work. Her weight is great, appetite good, she's bright in herself and a mile should really suit." Miss Chanel heads into the Group 1 off a career-best placing in the Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m), where she settled back before finishing strongly. Bott expects a more forward showing on Saturday despite a wide draw in barrier 12. "From the draw, we're probably going to have to be a bit more positive," he said. "Naturally, we think we can be stepping up to a mile, and she has sat on pace in some faster races over 1100 and 1200 [metres] earlier in the prep, so she does have tactical speed." Miss Chanel will attempt to become the first filly since She’s Extreme (Extreme Choice) in 2022 to win the Champagne Stakes.

Gibbons confident Southend can peak in Champagne

Southend (Palace Pier) will head into Saturday’s Champagne Stakes at Randwick with fresh legs and untapped upside, giving jockey Dylan Gibbons confidence the colt can measure up at the elite level. The Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou-trained youngster has taken a quieter path to the Group 1, highlighted by his win in the Baillieu Handicap (Gr 3, 1400m), and Gibbons believes that could prove a key advantage. “He hasn’t put a foot wrong, his first win was very good, then took the big step up to Group 3 grade and did a very good job but I didn’t think he was at his brilliant best,’’ Gibbons told Racing NSW. “He quickened up really well at Newcastle and did it so easily but at Rosehill he felt a bit casual because he didn’t have to really chase him. Because the second horse was in front of him all the way he just felt like he was doing a bit of trackwork. That’s what makes me think there’s a bit up his sleeve we didn’t see that day, and that’s a pretty promising sign.” Gibbons, a dual Group 1-winning rider, acknowledged Southend faces a step up against rivals coming through stronger autumn form races. “We’ll be taking on the stronger formlines with Campione D’Italia and Fireball but at the end of the day they’ve had runs in the Slipper and then the Sires and it could go one way or the other,’’ he said. “He’s going to have to step up again to beat them but I like the way he’s going and what he’s done so far. The good thing with our bloke is he’s had a cruisy time the whole way through and looks to peak.”

Brown keeps flexible approach with Jimmysstar in All Aged defence

Jimmysstar (Per Incanto) will attempt to defend his title in Saturday’s All Aged Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Randwick, with jockey Ethan Brown focused on overcoming the wide draw. The Ciaron Maher-trained gelding has drawn barrier 12 and Brown said keeping an open mind around race shape and track pattern will be key. “It’s going to take a good ride on my behalf,’’ Brown told Racing NSW. “But if there’s one positive he shouldn’t be getting poleaxed out of the gates from out there. He’s a horse you can’t change too much with, he is going to need some luck from his draw but we’ll work out a game plan and I’ll execute as best I can. You can’t overthink it, hopefully the track is playing into our hands because he has drawn that awkward gate and if they are coming down the outside it’s only going to help him.” Jimmysstar produced a strong late finish when fifth in the T J Smith Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) last start, reinforcing Brown’s belief the six-year-old has returned to form. “Things didn’t go our way last start either. I think last start you can confidently say he’s back in form the way he hit the line, and he’s looking for 1400 metres,” he said. A dual Group 1 winner at the distance, Jimmysstar will be chasing back-to-back All Aged victories, a feat not achieved since Rough Habit (Roughcast). “You know when he goes out 99 per cent of the time he’s going to give his all,’’ Brown said.

Temperament key to Headley Grange’s All Aged bid

Headley Grange (Exosphere) will need to keep his pre-race manners in check if he is to feature in Saturday’s All Aged Stakes at Randwick. Trainer Joe Pride believes the gelding’s behaviour before the race will be crucial, following his seventh placing in the Doncaster Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) when he became unsettled prior to the start. "Adam is back on, and Adam seems to get on really well with him and it's the pre-race antics that cost him," Pride said. "Hopefully Adam can make a fair difference for us on Saturday. He is capable at his best. In the weight-for-age Canterbury Stakes over 1300 metres he ran a terrific race first-up and it's a similar set-up here. It's around that trip and weight-for-age, so I think he can be competitive. But I want to see him do the little things right." The return of Adam Hyeronimus is seen as a positive, with the rider boasting six wins from eight rides aboard the five-year-old, including last spring’s Alan Brown Stakes (1400m). Headley Grange has been competitive throughout the campaign, finishing fourth in the Canterbury Stakes (Gr 1, 1300m) and fifth in the George Ryder Stakes (Gr 1, 1500m), both times hitting the line strongly. "It's the little percentages we're trying to play," Pride said. "They're pretty simple creatures, horses. You've got to continue changing things for them if they're doing things wrong. If they're not, don't change anything. It's not an easy task on Saturday. It's a hot field. As good an All Aged field as I can remember seeing, to be honest." Headley Grange has drawn barrier 14 and is expected to roll forward in what shapes as a high-quality renewal.

Frank Packer to shape Matias’ Derby path

Matias (Snitzel) will take a crucial step toward a potential Queensland Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) campaign when he lines up in the Frank Packer Plate (Gr 3, 2000m) at Randwick on Saturday. Co-trainer Gerald Ryan will use the race as a key test of his stamina, with the son of Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) stepping beyond 1800 metres for the first time. While his sire is typically associated with speed, Ryan believes Matias’ dam side provides a strong staying influence. "His first three dams have either won or been placed in an Oaks," Ryan said. "Never Listen is by Trusting and she ran second in a VRC Oaks. Rose O' War is by Danehill, she ran second in a VRC Oaks and second in a Wakeful Stakes. His third dam, Savana City, won an AJC Oaks." A winter campaign in Queensland remains on the agenda, with the Frank Packer result set to determine his path. Should he see out the 2000 metres strongly, Matias could progress to the Rough Habit Plate (Gr 3, 2000m) and potentially the Queensland Derby, while a shorter route via the Queensland Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m) remains an option. "We'll go to the Frank Packer Plate and that will decide if we keep going to the Rough Habit Plate," Ryan said. "If he doesn't look as though he'll get further than 2000 metres, then we'll bring him back to the Queensland Guineas." Ryan also felt the gelding was unlucky when third last start in the Carbine Club Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m). "If he'd been able to come around the leaders' heels last start instead of going back inside, I reckon he nearly wins the race," he said.

Frank Packer test looms for Olympian

Olympian (The Autumn Sun) will be given the opportunity to continue his upward trajectory when he steps out in Saturday’s Frank Packer Plate at Randwick. Trainer Paul Messara is expecting the three-year-old to relish the rise in trip, with the gelding having shown steady improvement since his debut defeat at Scone earlier this year. “He was an immature type, he was an entire and we had to geld him,’’ Messara told Racing NSW. “We felt that was the making of him really. I’m still disappointed with his first run, I thought he’d go better than he did. He got rolled then won his next two. He’s certainly bred to get the trip, he’s out of a Savabeel mare who was a Group 2 winner over 2000 metres.” Olympian heads into the race off an eye-catching fourth in the Carbine Club Stakes. “Sheza Alibi and The Next Episode and then him so I thought that was a pretty good effort. He was held up coming up the inside and I think if he wasn’t held up he goes very close to winning.” Messara said. “It was a really nice lead up run to this, 2000 metres won’t be a hassle for him, and I expect him to run very well.” A potential Queensland Derby campaign remains under consideration should Olympian continue to progress.

Waller weighs up Randwick return for Jokers Grin

Jokers Grin (Maschino) could make his eastern states debut at Randwick this weekend, although trainer Chris Waller remains undecided due to a tricky barrier. The former Western Australian sprinter is entered for Saturday’s Hall Mark Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m), but a wide draw has Waller considering whether to press on or stick with original plans to head straight to Queensland. "His draw isn't very good, but his owners were quick to point out he has run some really good races from wide draws, and he is a 'get-back' horse," Waller said. "I'll have a good look at the field and the race, and if we think he's a genuine winning chance or top three chance, we'll be running him. If I think he needs another two weeks based on the set up of the race, we might wait two weeks. But at this stage he's running." Jokers Grin has not raced since finishing fifth in the Winterbottom Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) in November and was initially set to resume in Queensland. That campaign remains on track, with the Doomben 10,000 (Gr 1, 1200m) and Kingsford-Smith Cup (Gr 1, 1300m) identified as key targets. "We intended to go to Queensland with him for a Group 2 race in two weeks' time, but he has come up a bit quicker than I thought, which is good," Waller said. "I think he can get to a race like the Doomben 10,000 and Kingsford-Smith. They're my two target races."

Mornington Cup target for Basilinna

Basilinna (Staphanos) will step up to a more suitable trip when she contests Saturday’s Mornington Cup (Listed, 2400m), with connections hopeful conditions fall in her favour. Trainers Emma-Lee and David Browne are chasing a ballot exemption into the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m), if they win the Mornington Cup. "She's got a good soft draw [barrier two] so she should be able to sit in a good spot," David Browne said. "Then we'll need some luck getting out and hopefully there's a bit of rain as that will help her out as well. A Soft 6 or 7, I would be happy, but if it stays a Soft 5, it's still good for her." Basilinna has had two runs this preparation, both in stronger company over shorter trips, and Browne said the mare had performed well despite being slightly out of her depth following a setback that interrupted her spring. "I thought her run in a high-pressure race, against very good company, was excellent last time," he said of the mare’s last-start eighth in the Australian Cup (Gr 1, 2000m). "She beat the horses she needed to beat, and that's all you can ask. She feels better than she ever has, so we're pretty happy in that way but the hardest thing with her is she has been one run behind."

Goodwood tilt on the line for Corniche

Corniche (Fastnet Rock) lines up in the Hareeba Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Mornington on Saturday, with trainer Shawn Mathrick using the Listed sprint as a key lead-up to The Goodwood (Gr 1, 1200m) at Morphettville next month. A former Godolphin galloper, Corniche has made an immediate impact for his new stable, winning the Bob Hoysted Handicap (Listed, 1000m) at Flemington. Following Corniche's win in the Bob Hoysted, Mathrick had floated the idea of contesting the Hareeba Stakes and then potentially heading to the Wangoom Handicap (Listed, 1200m) at Warrnambool. "I would prefer to go to The Goodwood," Mathrick said. "Warrnambool can be so tricky. Some just hate it, and you never know until you go there, but I would like to win a Group 1, and he's definitely got the quality to do that. Joliestar won the other day, and she only beat him a length-and-a-bit one day and his wet track form is terrific." Mathrick revealed the gelding has required careful management since arriving in the stable, including treatment for knee soreness, foot issues and heart arrhythmia. "I had to get the pain out of his knees, and his feet and he had heart arrhythmia but that has all settled down and he seems good," he said. "He worked like Manikato on Tuesday. He's a weapon." Stablemate Unflinching (I Am Invincible) will also be on the move, heading to Eagle Farm for the Ascot Handicap (Listed, 1000m).

Adelaide target for Exit in search of black type

Exit (Bivouac) will head to South Australia on Saturday as connections look to secure valuable black type in the H C Nitschke Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at Morphettville. The Ciaron Maher-trained filly was also nominated for the James H B Carr Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) at Randwick, but the stable has opted for the Adelaide assignment, where leading local rider Rochelle Milnes has been engaged. Assistant trainer Jack Turnbull said the decision was driven by the opportunity to enhance the filly’s future broodmare value. "Hopefully we can get a black type victory and that's why we're going," Turnbull said. "There was a horse in Sydney that was undefeated and obviously the one to beat, and it was drawn outside us, but we've decided on Adelaide given it's a more realistic chance in terms of winning. She was an expensive yearling and if we can get black type on her page with victory as a three-year-old, it would be huge for her." Exit heads into the race off a dominant last-start win over 1400 metres at Flemington on heavy ground and has shown an affinity for softer conditions throughout her career. "She will continue to get better, and she's really come on with the blinkers," Turnbull said. "She can be pretty tactical over the trip. You can stick her anywhere and from barrier six she should be in the first four or five. She actually favours soft going, so if they do get any rain, it will only play into her favour."

Wonder Boy to test mile credentials at Mornington

Wonder Boy (Cosmic Force) will get another opportunity to prove himself over a mile when he lines up in the No Fuss Event Hire Handicap (1600m) at Mornington on Saturday. Trainer Jerome Hunter is confident the four-year-old is better equipped to handle the distance this time around, having matured since his previous attempt as a three-year-old. That earlier run came in the Queensland Guineas at Eagle Farm, where Wonder Boy faded after racing on speed. "He didn't get much of a chance up at Eagle Farm that day when nothing went right for him," Hunter said. "He was up on speed, there was a lot going on, and it didn't suit him. Back on his home track, he'll be ridden more conservatively, and we'll see whether he gets the trip or not." Wonder Boy has not won since his Bendigo Guineas (Listed, 1400m) success last April but returned to form with a strong second placing over 1400 metres at Rosehill last start. "He's done well since Sydney and he has done really well this preparation," Hunter said. "Last start, he came up against a pretty good horse, I think." A Brisbane campaign is again on the radar, with Hunter eyeing the Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m) as a potential target. "He would need to get his rating up, but that would be a lovely race to try and get him into," he said.

Rare Lonhro memorabilia up for auction

An authentic piece of Australian racing and breeding history from Lonhro (Octagonal) is being offered to the public, with all proceeds set to support the NSW Children’s Burns Unit. The one-off item features the champion’s original front shoes from his time at stud, preserved exactly as worn and presented alongside a framed photograph. Known as the ‘Black Flash’, Lonhro was one of the defining racehorses of his generation and went on to become a highly influential stallion. This authentic Godolphin keepsake includes the original horseshoes complete with dirt from their final use, making it a rare and genuine artefact rather than a reproduction. Items of this nature are seldom made available, with the piece offering collectors and racing enthusiasts a unique opportunity to secure a tangible link to one of the modern greats of the Australian thoroughbred industry. Bidding is now open here.

Strong demand continues at NZB Online Yearling Sale

Momentum from Karaka carried through to New Zealand Bloodstock’s 2026 National Online Yearling Sale on Gavelhouse Plus, with 104 lots catalogued and more than $800,000 in turnover generated during Wednesday night’s session. Leading the sale was Lot 18, a filly by Sword Of State (Snitzel) out of Sade (Savabeel), who was secured by Japanese buyer Golden Orchid Brothers Inc. for $70,000. Consigned by Curraghmore, the draft also featured Lot 29, a Satono Aladdin (Deep Impact) filly out of Tabata (Savabeel) purchased by Stephen Marsh Racing and Dylan Johnson Bloodstock for $55,000. “We were confident that we were offering yearlings that physically, were up to our usual Karaka standard,” Curraghmore principal Gordon Cunningham said. “On farm, inspection levels were good with genuine enquiries from overseas also. There was competitive bidding for sure. That said, I feel our horses have been bought at value. It’s been a good sale, so thank you and all the best to everyone who bid and purchased from us.” The second-top lot was Lot 34, a Zousain (Zoustar) colt out of Trophies Galore (Reward For Effort) from Highden Park, bought by Hong Kong Bloodstock for $63,000, with buyers from Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong and New Zealand active throughout. NZB Bloodstock Sales Manager Kane Jones said the result was particularly pleasing following a one-day delay caused by a cyber attack. “Firstly, we would like to thank both our vendors and our buyers for their patience and understanding after a frustrating experience on Tuesday night,” Jones said. “It was very pleasing to see the momentum from Karaka 2026 roll into this session, with significant increases across the aggregate, average and median.” All yearlings remain eligible for the lucrative Karaka Millions Series, continuing to underpin strong demand across the online format.

Trainer comfortable with Championship market

Robert Wellwood believes the pre-post market for Saturday’s Championship Stakes (Gr 3, 2100m) is a fair reflection of his stable's three-strong bid on the age group feature at Ellerslie. With training partner Roger James, they will be represented in the Trelawney Stud-sponsored event by current favourite Solid Gold (Savabeel), Waimea Bay (Savabeel) and Fantastic Ideas (Puccini). Solid Gold’s impressive last-start maiden success at Ellerslie has earned the daughter of Savabeel (Zabeel) a $3.40 quote for the Championship Stakes. “The way she won last time out, she probably deserves to be the favourite,” Wellwood said. “She’s a filly that has showed a lot for a long time and put it altogether last time. The 2100 metres is really going to suit her and she’s drawn nicely, so it makes sense where she sits.” Like her stablemate, Waimea Bay is raced by breeders Waikato Stud and was runner-up three runs back in the Desert Gold Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) and was most recently fourth in the Wellington Guineas (Gr 3, 1600m). “We’re not really sure whether she goes further than a mile, she didn’t have much of an opportunity to tell us in the Guineas,” Wellwood said. “She got trapped wide, so we are going to learn a lot more on Saturday.” There are no such distance doubts about Fantastic Ideas who broke her maiden last time out over 2000 metres in her second appearance and is rated a $27 hope. “Her work has been superb and she was very game and tough when she won at Matamata,” Wellwood said. “Solid Gold looks the class one of them, but it certainly wouldn’t be a surprise to see the other two right in it.”

Out Of The Blue bidding for maiden stakes win

A stakes victory won’t come Out Of The Blue (Tivaci) for the horse that bears the same name when he heads to Ellerslie this weekend. Out Of The Blue has been a solid performer for trainers Mark Walker and Sam Bergerson this season, winning his first two starts before placing in the Wellesley Stakes (Listed, 1100m) and Matamata Slipper (Gr 3, 1200m), with his only unplaced run coming when seventh in the Karaka Millions 2YO (RL, 1200m). He was set to contest last month’s Sistema Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Ellerslie on Champions Day but he was late scratched at the barriers following a veterinary examination which revealed he displayed signs of lameness in his right-hind leg. While disappointed with the outcome, Bergerson said he has progressed well since, finishing runner-up in his 800-metre trial at Ellerslie earlier this month, giving Bergerson the confidence to press on towards Saturday’s Star Way Stakes (Listed, 1200m). “It was a shame about the Group 1, but he has bounced through it well and he had a quiet trial at Ellerslie last week where he was really good,” Bergerson said. “It is a bit of a sticky gate [nine] but Opie [Bosson] is on and hopefully he can get his way and be positive. He should give a really good account of himself in a pretty even race.”

Oh lands first New Zealand success

Apprentice jockey Hyeontaek Oh came very close to success in his first raceday ride earlier this month, and while he came off second-best on that occasion, he wasn’t to be denied in another short margin finish at Matamata on Wednesday, timing his run perfectly to get Lae Zee (Zed) up on the line to win by 0.1 lengths. “That was amazing,” Oh said. It’s been a long road to get to the races for the 28-year-old, with the seed of becoming a jockey firmly placed in his mind while attending school in his native South Korea. “When I was young people around me recommended that I become a jockey because I was small,” he said. “When I graduated high school I was thinking about what I should do and I decided I wanted to become a jockey.” Oh applied and was accepted into the Korea Racing Authority’s Horse Racing Academy, however, following an injury he was unable to maintain the required weight and furthered his experience with a brief stint in Australia. “I was in there [Academy] for one year because my ribs cracked and I couldn’t keep my weight down,” Oh said. “In Korea, apprentice jockeys must be under 49 kilograms and we had to check weight every other day and I couldn’t get it under in that time. After that I went to Australia and worked for Desleigh Forster in Brisbane for experience. When I was in the military I started sending emails to New Zealand trainers saying that I wanted to be a jockey and it didn’t matter if I started as a stablehand. I sent emails to a few trainers and Chad [Ormsby] was the only one that answered.”

To Bravery Born purchased by Hong Kong clients

To Bravery Born (Snitzel) will continue his racing career in Hong Kong following his recent sale. Bred by Nearco Stud, the son of Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) was purchased by Te Akau Racing principal David Ellis out of Curraghmore’s 2024 New Zealand Bloodstock Book 1 Yearling Sale draft for $200,000. Trained by Mark Walker and Sam Bergerson, he went on to win two of his five starts as a juvenile and placed in the Matamata Slipper (Gr 3, 1200m). He made a winning start to his three-year-old term before adding a further win to his tally in December, which was followed by three unplaced runs, including a last-start seventh placing in the $4 million NZB Kiwi (Listed, 1500m) at Ellerslie on Champions Day. “He has been a really good horse for the stable,” Bergerson said. “He was at all the big dances as a two-year-old and he did a fantastic job this season as well. He was there at Taupo at the start of the season and we freshened him up after the Wanganui Guineas and he went to some pretty good races along the way. He always gave a really good account of himself. It was a pity that he let himself down at the start, but he used to rattle off some really good sectionals late. It is sad to see him go, he is a very talented horse, but I am confident he can do well over there for his new trainer and ownership group, and I am looking forward to following his career.”

Windsor Park set for Rugby, Racing and Beer Sale

Windsor Park Stud is preparing for a strong turnout at its annual Rugby, Racing and Beer Sale, to be held at Riccarton Park on April 23. The boutique sale, featuring 12 yearlings, has carved out a unique place on the calendar as both a commercial event and a social fundraiser, with guest speakers including former All Black Andy Ellis and Group 1-winning trainer Bjorn Baker. “It’s a concept I came up with five or six years ago,” Windsor Park’s Rodney Schick said. “We all love rugby, we love our racing and we love our beer. It’s just a great day to have a good lunch together, sell some horses and support the South Island.” Now in its fourth year, the sale has produced notable graduates including Group 3 winner Proved (Time Test) and stakes winner Collect Your Cash (Rageese), underlining its growing reputation. “We’ve had horses like Proved come out of the sale… along with Collect Your Cash who is a stakes winner… It’s been a successful sale and we have a lot of fun in the process,” Schick said. Demand has been strong, with the event sold out and 280 attendees expected, including 36 trainers. A portion of proceeds will again support key charities. “It’s also a good fundraiser, so a percentage of the sale proceeds will go to the Horse Ambulance and to St John, two very important charities,” Schick said.

HK: McDonald chases further Group 1 glory on Romantic Warrior

James McDonald is hoping to add another victory at the highest level when he reunites with Romantic Warrior (Acclamation) in the QEII Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) at Sha Tin on Sunday, April 26. McDonald surpassed the Group 1 record of retired jockey Damien Oliver’s 129 wins at the highest level when he rode Autumn Boy (The Autumn Sun) to victory in the Rosehill Guineas (Gr 1, 2000m) at Rosehill in Sydney for champion trainer Chris Waller last month, and can thank the Danny Shum-trained Romantic Warrior for providing 12 of his Group 1 victories, with two of those achieved in the QEII Cup in 2023 and 2024. Injury robbed the eight-year-old of defending his QEII Cup title last year, but he’s made a sensational return to racing and the general consensus is that he is as good as ever as he chases an extension to the record of QEII Cup victories. Champion jockey Hugh Bowman rode Romantic Warrior in a 1200-metre barrier trial last month and gave a glowing report, which excited McDonald, who can’t wait to get back to Hong Kong and be reunited with Romantic Warrior. “They say he is in fantastic form,” he said. “Hughie [Bowman] said he is as good as ever. He is a marvellous horse, but it is a big race coming up. I speak to Hughie quite often and he is over the moon with him, the same as Tommy Simpson who is his physio and the same with Danny. They have all sent me videos. They are just over the moon with the way he is feeling and looking. It’s a tough test, but he deserves it. If you want to be the best you have to beat the best, don’t you?”

HK: Royal Champion seeks more overseas success in QEII Cup

Karl Burke believes Romantic Warrior will need to be at his best to defeat an on-song Royal Champion (Shamardal) in the QEII Cup on April 26. The North Yorkshire trainer is under no illusions about the task his stable star faces but thinks a reproduction of his dominant performance in the Neom Turf Cup (Gr 1, 2100m) at Riyadh in February will see him threaten the local superstar as he bids for a fourth win in the race following successes in 2022, 2023 and 2024. Royal Champion’s latest run was a career-best effort, and the sprightly eight-year-old has also landed the York Stakes (Gr 2, 1m 2.5f) and Bahrain International Trophy (Gr 2, 2000m) since joining Burke in December, 2024, making him one of the top older horses in Europe. “We’re looking forward to it,” the trainer said. “He seems in good form, and he’s due to fly out on Friday [April 17]. If we can put up a performance like we did in Saudi, when he had the race won three furlongs out, it will take a horse like Romantic Warrior at his best to beat him. Talking to some of the Hong Kong guys, they give us a chance of certainly giving him a race, if not beating him. Romantic Warrior is a fantastic horse and taking on horses like him is what international racing is all about. It’s not as if he’s been to Britain and we can get a guide on how good he is, and sometimes horses don’t perform to their best in the international races, but I’m looking forward to the challenge.”

HK: Williams to reunite with Cap Ferrat in Mile

Craig Williams will reunite with Hong Kong Derby (Listed, 2000m) winner Cap Ferrat (Snitzel) in the Champions Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) at Sha Tin on April 26. Williams was aboard when Cap Ferrat broke his maiden with a shock Hong Kong Derby win last year, and the pair will team up for the first time since last May’s Champions and Charter Cup (Gr 1, 2400m), in which they finished third behind Voyage Bubble (Deep Field). “I’m delighted to be back aboard Cap Ferrat," Williams told Racing.com. “He provided one of the highlights of my career winning the Hong Kong Derby and I’m really looking forward to reuniting with him in Hong Kong. We have a great association, and I’m looking forward to riding him again in the international mile race on champions day. It’s one of the biggest days on the Hong Kong racing calendar, so naturally it’s going to be very competitive. If he’s at his best, he’s definitely a chance to take out the race.”

HK: Size hopeful conditions can help Red Lion in Champions Mile

Trainer John Size believes some cut in the ground will boost the chances of defending champion Red Lion (Belardo) in the Champions Mile at Sha Tin on Sunday, April 26. The mercurial galloper has endured a frustrating 2025/26 campaign and is without a win since claiming the 2024/25 edition of the Champions Day contest 12 months ago. Red Lion sprang a shock at Sha Tin when, under an expert ride from Hugh Bowman, the Belardo (Lope De Vega) gelding prevailed by a short head at 89/1 over the odds-on favourite Voyage Bubble, who was seeking a fourth straight Group 1 success that afternoon. The seven-year-old produced a sharp effort in a 1200-metre Sha Tin barrier trial on Thursday morning, when he raced at the front of the field and reacted smartly at the 200-metre mark when asked for some effort by Andrea Atzeni to finish a nose behind Little Paradise (Toronado), who clocked 1m 10.96s. “Actually, he’s been trialling very well recently – I suppose he always does,” said Size. “But on raceday, he seems to be giving up pretty early in the race. He hasn’t been fighting out the finish. But we’ll try again. He’s been drawn on the inside recently, and maybe hasn’t enjoyed that. That [rain] would make a big difference to him. Maybe tomorrow we might start to get a bit of a shower here and there and that will certainly help.”

JPN: Dee and Lane granted riding licences

Damian Lane and Michael Dee have both been granted short-term licences to ride in Japan. The duo, who rode in Japan over a similar period last year, have both re-obtained JRA licences for the upcoming months, active from the 18th of April to the 18th of June. Lane has already locked in a ride aboard Stinger Glass (Kizuna) in the Tenno Sho (Spring) (Gr 1, 2000m) in early May. Lane will be bidding to defend his Tenno Sho title, after winning the spring edition last year on Redentor (Rulership), amongst his 29 wins from 109 rides in the region. Dee copped some bad luck early in his Japanese stint but still ended his temporary licence with five winners and 20 minor placings.

174 for Frankel

Oxagon (3 c ex Endless Charm by Dubawi) threw down a marker for next month’s English 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) when making all to score in Thursday’s Craven Stakes (Gr 3, 1m) at Newmarket. Becoming the 174th individual stakes winner for Juddmonte’s breed-shaping sire Frankel (Galileo), the John and Thady Gosden-trained colt was ridden by Oisin Murphy and proved two lengths too strong for Avicenna (Starspangledbanner). There was a further three-quarters of a length back to Hidden Force (Frankel) in third place. Bred by Nawara Stud and racing in the colours of Prince A A Faisal, Oxagon is a half-brother to winner Appointed One (Exceed And Excel) being out of the winning Dubawi (Dubai Millennium) mare Endless Charm, herself out of the Italian Group 3 winner Whazzis (Desert Prince). Frankel is standing at Banstead Manor Stud for a fee of £350,000 (approx. AU$660,160).

UK: Run To Freedom breaks Group-race duck

Henry Candy’s gallant eight-year-old Run To Freedom (8 h Muhaarar - Twilight Mistress by Bin Ajwaad) landed his first Group race when running out a shock winner of Thursday’s Abernant Stakes (Gr 3, 6f) at Newmarket. Ridden by Rob Hornby, the son of Muhaarar (Oasis Dream) found plenty inside the closing stages to deny Aramram (Blue Point) by three-quarters of a length with a further head back to Quinault (Oasis Dream) in third place. A dual Listed winner prior to Thursday’s Group 3 contest, Run To Freedom has also produced placed efforts in races such as the July Cup (Gr 1, 6f) and British Champions Sprint Stakes (Gr 1, 6f).

US: Former shuttler Frosted dies

Frosted (Tapit), one of the most dominant milers of his generation and former shuttle stallion, has died at the age of 14. The son of Tapit (Pulpit) was euthanised on April 15 after suffering from acute laminitis. Trained by Kiaran McLaughlin for Godolphin, Frosted rose to prominence as a three-year-old, finishing runner-up to American Pharoah (Pioneerof The Nile) in the 2015 Belmont Stakes (Grade 1, 12f) before developing into a top-class older horse. His defining performance came in the 2016 Metropolitan Handicap (Gr 1, 8f) at Belmont Park, where he produced one of the most emphatic victories in modern American racing, winning by 14.5 lengths in a stakes-record time. That season also included victory in the Whitney Stakes (Gr 1, 9f), cementing his status as a three-time Grade 1 winner with earnings just shy of US$4 million. Retired to Darley’s Jonabell Farm in Kentucky, Frosted later shuttled to Darley’s Northwood base where he made a significant early impact as a stallion. His Australian progeny include multiple Group 3 winner Ingratiating and Hot Danish Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) winner Arctic Glamour.

UK: Starspangledbanner filly tops Tattersalls Craven Breeze Up Sale

Anthony Stroud came out on top of a protracted bidding duel with Blandford Bloodstock’s Richard Brown, the former landing the winning bid of 900,000gns (approx. AU$1.78 million) for the Starspangledbanner (Choisir) filly from Egmont Stud that topped the Tattersalls Craven Breeze Up Sale on Thursday. The filly is out of the unraced Ruler Of The World (Galileo) mare Belicious, who herself is a half-sister to Group 3 winner Sub Rose (Galileo) and Listed scorer Astonishing (Galileo). She has been purchased on behalf of Shaikh Khalid and Shaikh Nasser bin Hamed Al Khalifa’s Victorious Forever who have been huge supporters of the sale, Stroud explained: “Shaikh Khalid takes a lot of interest in the breeze up and has had enormous success with the likes of Vandeek and others. His input is so vital. It is a team effort picking them, but his involvement is huge and he makes up his own mind. I did not think she would make so much, but that is a horse sale for you. You always have to go the extra mile when you see one you really like. It is fantastic that Victorious Forever is here; there is so much going on in the world and it is to be hugely admired that they are participating. It shows how much they love their racing here." The two days of selling brought turnover of 15,450,500gns (approx. AU$30.63 million), which was 18 per cent behind last year’s record renewal. The average price was down 13 per cent at 136,730gns (approx. AU$271,150), although the median held firm at 100,000gns (approx. AU$198,310), a figure underpinned by a record-equalling 11 lots making 300,000gns (approx. AU$594,920) or more. The clearance rate reached a respectable 81 per cent as 113 juveniles sold from 140 offered.

Australian buyers active at Tattersalls Craven Sale

Lot 179: Justify ex Elitiste colt (Credit: Inglis)

Australian buyers were once again active at the Tattersalls Craven Sale, securing three lots from the premier breeze-up sale.

Leading the trio was Lot 179, a colt by Justify (Scat Daddy) out of Elitiste (Danehill Dancer), purchased for 220,000gns (approx. AU$436,250) by a partnership which included Blandford Bloodstock, Matt Houldsworth, First Light Racing and Gollan Racing.

The colt was offered by C.F. Bloodstock and shapes as a high-end acquisition for the group.

In a statement on X, First Light Racing confirmed that they plan to target Royal Ascot with the colt given he is eligible for both the Windsor Castle Stakes (Listed, 5f) on the Wednesday and the Chesham Stakes (Listed, 7f) on the Thursday of the royal meeting.

Lot 149, a colt by Starspangledbanner (Choisir) out of Best Of My Love (Canford Cliffs), was secured for 70,000gns (approx. AU$138,800) by Glenstar Bloodstock and Shane McGrath Bloodstock.

Consigned by Lynn Lodge Stud, McGrath was delighted to go home with the one that was their top pick of the sale.

“We looked at plenty of colts here that we felt suited our Hong Kong model and he was the one we really honed in on,” McGrath said.

“We have had a lot of luck with Starspangledbanner down in Australia and he reminded me particularly of a horse called Star Patrol who has won a couple of Group 2’s for us. A big, fast, sprinting horse himself, he is a February foal, he is well presented and I thought he breezed very well.”

McGrath also thanked the Tattersalls team for their hospitality: “Ben and all the crew here have looked after us and we will be back again.”

Also knocked down to the Australian contingent was Lot 150, a filly by Kodiac (Danehill) out of Beychella (Scat Daddy), who was secured for 72,000gns (approx. AU$142,770) by Henry Dwyer Racing, Nick Bauer and Montana Stewart.

The filly was consigned by Ellie Whittaker of EMW Equine and this was not Dwyer’s first dealing with the Suffolk-based operation, as Ellie and her team pre-trained Asfoora (Flying Artie) for her Royal Ascot campaigns.

Dwyer told Tattersalls: “If we are going to be here and have one horse here, we may as well have a few. Lemos De Souza is looking after them for us and I look forward to getting this filly to the races. You never know, she might end up at Royal Ascot too.

“She was prepped up by Ellie Whittaker who runs her pre-training operation there at Long Holes, has always said this filly she really likes and she feels it’s a superior two-year-old, she thinks it’s ready to go straight to the races and she sort of gave me a call and said you should have a look at her.

“Kodiac is a stallion I really like. He is by Danehill, so they work really well in Australia. So certainly the idea is to have her race here [in the UK] but she will end up in Australia at some stage.

“She will be here for a year and a half regardless of what happens and if she is good enough we will take her back. There is the residual value with a nice European pedigree and by a good stallion in Kodiac.”

The purchases highlight continued Australian demand at the Craven Sale, with buyers targeting a mix of proven international bloodlines.

Danny Shum fires in Happy Valley treble ahead of Romantic Warrior’s FWD QEII Cup tilt

Preparing to bid for a record fourth QEII Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) victory with Romantic Warrior (Acclamation) at Sha Tin next week, Danny Shum vaulted into third place in the Hong Kong trainers’ championship with a treble at Happy Valley on Wednesday night.

Shum struck with Always My Folks (Capitalist) under Zac Purton in the Class 5 Celebrating 50 Years Of The HK Sevens Handicap (1000m), Hugh Bowman aboard Fantastic Fun (Justify) in the Class 4 Winning Try Handicap (1650m) and Harmony Galaxy (Courtier) in the Class 4 Successful Conversion Handicap (1800m) for Brenton Avdulla to enhance hopes of a maiden trainers’ title.

Shum took his tally for the season to 45 wins to trail only Mark Newnham (48) and Caspar Fownes (48) after leapfrogging David Hayes (44) but concedes he has a significant challenge to secure the championship.

“Hopefully I can keep going, it's been a good period. I don't have that many good Sha Tin horses so it will be hard [to win the title] but I will try my best,” said Shum, as he hailed Avdulla’s ride on Harmony Galaxy.

“He ran a really good race, but it was a world-class performance by Brenton. He [Harmony Galaxy] loves this track and distance.”

Hayes maintained hopes of a third trainers’ title with double in tandem with Harry Bentley - World Hero (Written Tycoon) in the Class 4 One City Two Passions Handicap (1200m) and All Round Winner (Divine Prophet) in the Class 3 Scrum Half Handicap (1650m).

Hayes was impressed with Bentley’s displays.

“He’s riding really well for me,” Hayes said, while Bentley praised World Hero.

“It was a good performance, obviously being drawn wide [gate 12] was a concern beforehand but he’s a horse who does go forward and he’s got early speed, so we were able to get into a good early position and the pace backed off down the back straight,” Bentley said.

“He filled his lungs up and kicked really well around the bend. He’s a horse who’s coming into a good vein of form and he quickened up nicely.”

Caspar Fownes and Joao Moreira combined successfully when Moreira weaved a tight passage on Family Fortune (Derryn) to land the Class 5 Celebrating 40 Years Of The HKFC10s Handicap (1650m), drawing rich praise from the trainer.

“I don't think many other jockeys here could have got the same result - that's just the way it is. It was a masterpiece,” Fownes said.

“That's why we've got him here, bringing us the goods. He's got a great work ethic, he's a great team player and a great rider - what more can I say? He's a great man.”

Eight-time champion jockey Purton sealed a double when John Size’s Beauty Alliance (Starcraft) prevailed in the Class 3 Hong Kong China Rugby Cup Handicap (1650m) before Bowman matched his compatriot’s feat with success on Jamie Richards-trained Storming Dragon (Star Turn) in the Class 4 Racing With Rugby Handicap (1200m).

The double left Purton on 98 wins and on the cusp of riding 100 winners or more in a season for the tenth straight campaign and the 11th time overall.

Richards was delighted with Bowman’s ride on Storming Dragon.

“I said to Hugh before the race to have an open mind, the horse doesn't need to be ridden quietly all the time and I think when Northern Fire Ball was scratched at the barrier it actually helped us get across easier from a wide draw [gate nine],” Richards said.

“I was reading the paper this morning, and I saw that there was a two per cent winning strike rate from barrier 11 on the ‘A course’ and I was furious, but thankfully the horse has done a good job, and Hugh gave him a beautiful ride.”

Angus Chung and Tony Cruz closed the programme in style when Do You Just (So You Think) clinched the Class 3 Golden Point Handicap (1200m) to claim a PP Bonus of HK$1.5 million (approx. AU$267,250).

By So You Think (High Chaparral), the three-year-old won the Champagne Stakes (Listed, 1600m) at Ellerslie when he was trained in New Zealand by Lance O’Sullivan & Andrew Scott before export to Hong Kong.

Hong Kong racing continues at Sha Tin on Sunday.

Maiden Of The Week

St Gotthard (AUS)

2 c Snitzel - Ms Bad Behavior by Blame

St Gotthard (Credit: Inglis)

St Gotthard (Snitzel), a full-sibling to Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Switzerland, broke his maiden at the first time of asking when scoring over 1200 metres at Warwick Farm on Wednesday.

Lining up in the Kia Ora Bloodlines to Headlines Handicap (1200m) as the odds-on favourite, the colt edged out Peyton (Zoustar) by 0.2 lengths under James McDonald.

There was a further 2.2 lengths back to the winner's stablemate Nations League (Snitzel) in third.

“Very talented horse, he's been very well educated and handled at home. He was in foreign territory there, being the outside leader and left in front a long way from home and he just felt like he floated a little bit, but he's got plenty of talent and it's a beautiful horse going forward,” McDonald said.

“Anything he does, he does with ease and he’s got a nice nature. He's the full package.”

A move into stakes company could be the option for St Gotthard following his debut victory.

St Gotthard (AUS)

Sale: 2025 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale V: Arrowfield Stud P: Tom Magnier, $2,700,000

Breeder: Arrowfield Group Pty Ltd

“He did everything right, which was good. They went steady through the mid-stages and it was a good, solid sprint home,” Waller said.

“The second horse is pretty handy and put out a good challenge and it was good to see St Gotthard strong late. He'll take good improvement from it and it was a good debut.

“It's great to get horses up to Queensland, but if the weather holds here in Sydney, we can keep them here too. You can win a Saturday race in Sydney for $160,000, and then with a BOB’s bonus is it's almost equal to a Listed race in Queensland.

“Here's the main centre of attention for now, but obviously you've got the JJ Atkins if we get up that far and in the next few weeks we'll be letting go some good two year-olds.”
