Darling View graduates primed for big payday in The Quokka

With a pair of Darling View Thoroughbreds graduates contesting The Quokka (1200m) alongside another leading contender sired by the farm’s resident Playing God (Blackfriars), Saturday’s $5 million contest at Ascot represents the perfect opportunity for the Atwell family to showcase the premium quality of stock they consistently produce.

In a wide-open renewal of The Quokka, the Darling View-bred duo of Luana Miss (Bivouac) and West Star (Playing God) both appear capable of repelling the annual eastern seaboard raid on Western Australia’s most lucrative; and the local brigade is further bolstered by the presence of another speedy son of Playing God in Rope Them In, who bids to build on his last-start Roma Cup (Gr 3, 1100m) success.

What's On

The talented trio all tuned up for their tilt at the lucrative slot race in the Roma Cup, and while the spoils ultimately went the way of Rope Them In – who registered an eighth stakes success for Playing God this season – both Luana Miss and West Star were placed in the forgive file after encountering serious traffic in the home straight.

Victory for any one of the three would represent a seismic result for the farm although stud manager Brent Atwell, who followed his father Clive and mother Trish into the family business, openly confesses a slight leaning towards Luana Miss – not least as Darling View retained a share in the Trevor Andrews-trained filly.

The market also agrees, with Luana Miss on the fourth line of betting at $8.50 while Rope Them In and West Star have both drifted from their respective opening quotes of $17 and $26 as punters home in on the chances of interstate raiders Jigsaw (Manhattan Rain) and Caballus (I Am Invincible).

Not a lot of horses have that type of speed, but if you want to be at the top end of the scale in the sprinting ranks, you really need it. Trevor [Andrews] has done an amazing job with her, she’s really matured into a more professional racehorse because she was quite highly-strung in the early days

Brent Atwell

Atwell readily concedes that, given their spate of success in the Group 1 arena, the pair thoroughly merit their status as joint favourites but he is equally adamant the locals are no forlorn hope, and is growing in confidence that Luana Miss can become the first filly to win the race – provided she finds clear running room.

“Luana Miss has that point-to-point speed which only the really good ones have,” Atwell told ANZ News.

“Not a lot of horses have that type of speed, but if you want to be at the top end of the scale in the sprinting ranks, you really need it. Trevor [Andrews] has done an amazing job with her, she’s really matured into a more professional racehorse because she was quite highly-strung in the early days.

“I like a filly with attitude, but I was slightly concerned that might be her undoing. She did have some moments in her two-year-old campaign when she got a little overwhelmed, but Trevor has put a lot of work into her and we’re seeing the benefits of that.

“Unfortunately with her racing pattern we will see a lot of hard-luck stories with her, as was the case in the Roma Cup. In her last six starts I think she’s been mentioned in every stewards’ report, because she does often find a bit of trouble in running. But if she gets the right run on Saturday, I do think she can be really competitive.”

The Atwells purchased Luana Miss’ dam Little Bit Ditsy (Bel Esprit) in foal to Bivouac (Exceed And Excel) for $160,000 at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale in May of 2022. Some four months later, Luana Miss took her first tentative steps on the family’s spacious 400-acre farm in Mundijong and the diminutive filly subsequently fetched $110,000 at the 2024 Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale.

Given the early prowess she had shown at home, allied to Atwell Jnr’s admiration for Bivouac as a racehorse, Darling View brokered a deal to stay in the filly and, like their canny acquisition of Little Bit Ditsy, it has proved something of a masterstroke with Luana Miss winning four of her eight career starts and amassing more than $500,000 in the process.

“We’re always looking to improve the quality of our broodmares and our purchase of Little Bit Ditsy has definitely been one of the highlights,” said Atwell, who will be trackside at Ascot on Saturday afternoon.

“The mare was a very nice sort, and I thought she would suit our market over here in WA. The pedigree attracted me and I love having Bel Esprit in the family to inject plenty of speed. She’s not an overly big mare and the family doesn’t tend to produce big stock, but they can certainly run fast as we’ve seen with Luana Miss.

“I really loved Bivouac as a racehorse, his turn of foot was outstanding and he’s passed that onto her. We had high hopes for the filly but she’s definitely exceeded our expectations so far. The dream would be to bring her back to the farm once she’s finished racing, but on the other hand I’m also hoping she’s too valuable for us to buy her outright. It’s very hard to buy well-performed fillies off the track and add them to our broodmare band, so we often look to retain a share in some of the better-bred fillies we take to the sales – and we’re very glad we made that decision with her.”

No doubt they will take a similar approach to Luana Miss’ half-sister, who according to Atwell is built in a similar mould to her celebrated sibling and will be going through the sales ring next year.

She was sired by Playing God, who has taken the Western Australian breeding scene by storm since Darling View acquired him in June 2020 following the closure of his previous residence, Mungrup Stud.

Playing God (Credit: Darling View Thoroughbreds)

His meteoric rise to become the state’s pre-eminent stallion has seen his service fee elevated to $49,500 (inc GST), but the Atwells will resist the temptation to cash in on his ever-increasing reputation by maintaining that figure for the upcoming breeding season.

Playing God’s profile would certainly be elevated further if either West Star or Rope Them In could spring a surprise in The Quokka. Little went right for West Star during his eastern odyssey last spring, when his trainer Simon Miller elected to pull up stumps on the four-year-old’s campaign after two lacklustre runs in Melbourne.

West Star (Credit: Western Racepix)

He regained some of his previous zest with an impressive trial outing last month and after a luckless run in the Roma Cup, Atwell is hopeful for a change of fortunes on Saturday when West Star lines up in The Quokka for the second time, having finished seventh – beaten just over two lengths – by Jokers Grin (Maschino) 12 months ago.

“We haven’t seen his best for a while but if he can get back to the form he showed leading into The Quokka last year, then he’d be in with a real chance,” Atwell told ANZ News.

“He’s a great talent and we also raced his dam [Jester Derriere], West Star was her final foal and it looks like she saved the best for last. Whatever happens on Saturday, it’s a privilege to have two horses we bred lining up in a race worth $5 million. I’m sure we’ll have a great day out no matter what, but it would obviously be a dream come true if either of them could win the race.”

Jigsaw juggernaut on a roll for Perth’s The Quokka

Jigsaw (Credit: Sportpix)

Rejuvenated Melbourne sprinter Jigsaw (Manhattan Rain) has drawn the outside barrier for the $5 million The Quokka (1200m) at Ascot on Saturday, but Cranbourne trainer Cindy Alderson is confident he can redress a controversial race result in the west 40 years ago.

Cindy’s father Colin Alderson sent Puckle Harbour (Palm Beach) and jockey Harry White across the Nullabor for the 1987 Perth Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) only to see them streeted by local stayer Rocket Racer (Balmerino) who was raced by controversial owner Laurie Connell.

Rocket Racer returned to scale noticeably distressed and near collapse before being manhandled out of the enclosure by several attendants. The result took on a more sinister tone and would be forever tainted when another Connell-owned winner tested positive to etorphine.

Alderson vowed never to send another horse to the ‘Wild West’ but the notorious WA Inc scandals of the 1980s are long gone and Cindy was in a buoyant mood despite drawing the visitors’ gate of 13 at Breakfast With The Stars on Tuesday.

"He’s won six in a row and has jumped from wide barriers in the last four of them," Alderson said. “We’re just hoping he's good enough to make it seven!

"It's really exciting to be in a slot race like The Quokka. I wasn't expecting this to happen at this stage of his life or mine. I'm so grateful to everyone who has helped make it happen.”

In a wide-open market, Jigsaw is currently a $4.40 narrow favourite ahead of Rey Magnerio (Magnus) at $4.60 and Caballus (I Am Invincible) at $5. Caballus is trained by Bjorn Baker for a Darby Racing syndicate and they won the first two editions of The Quokka in 2023-24 with Overpass (Vancouver).

Local sprinter Jokers Grin (Maschino) scored a popular win for veteran conditioner Bernie Miller last year and Luana Miss (Bivouac) is best-priced among the home defence at $10 for trainer Trevor Andrews.

Ladbrokes secured Jokers Grin for their slot in the 2025 The Quokka and they’re on a running double with Jigsaw.

“We’re thrilled to partner with Ladbrokes,” Alderson said. “They are great supporters of racing and we are proud that Jigsaw can fly the flag.

“It’s a long journey to Perth but Jigsaw has never given us a reason not to take up the challenge. He has a remarkable will to win and The Quokka gives us an incredible opportunity.”

Ladbrokes commercial manager Dean Elliott said Alderson has done an incredible job with Jigsaw.

“He’s a seven-year-old gelding who continues to compete at the top level. We were keen to secure him and couldn’t be happier to partner with Cindy to keep the fairytale going.”

Some are calling it a ‘Cindy-rella’ story.

Jigsaw was bred by Cindy’s mother Lynne and is raced in partnership with Marcus Price. He hit the ground running as a summer two-year-old, winning on debut at Geelong before a third placing behind General Beau (Brazen Beau) and Anamoe (Street Boss) in the 2021 Blue Diamond Prelude (C&G) (Gr 3, 1100m) at Caulfield.

He trained on at four to set a course-record 57.24s for 1000 metres in the Apache Cat Classic at Cranbourne and followed up with on-pace victories in the Doveton Stakes (Listed, 1000m) at Caulfield, Christmas Stakes (Listed, 1100m) at Sandown-Hillside and Australia Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Moonee Valley.

For reasons that Cindy can’t pinpoint, Jigsaw then lost his way going winless in 12 starts between April 2023 and October 2025.

“I can’t find a reason for his resurgence this season other than a lovely spell and the fact he’s a happy horse,” she said. "When I’m asked what I'm doing differently I tell them nothing really.

"He's come into his own, his confidence has soared and he's really clicked with Logan [Bates]. They are the only tangibles I can put my finger on."

The comeback started with a second Apache Cat Classic (1200m) victory on home turf in October and continued on Cox Plate Day in the McEwen Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Moonee Valley.

An all-the-way victory in the $1 million Cranbourne Meteorite (1200m) followed before a trail-blazing trip across the Tasman for New Zealand’s premier sprint in the Sistema Railway (Gr 1, 1200m).

“What a beautiful horse,” Bates said at Ellerslie. “You wouldn’t think a seven-year-old could come back like this and get better and better. When I gave him a squeeze he ranged up to Alabama Lass and gave me an unbelievable kick.

“I remember coming over from New Zealand and before I even started riding, Cindy and I had a conversation and she said one of her greatest achievements would be to see me win a Group 1 and it would be even better if it was in her colours for the Alderson family.

“Now we’ve done it and it means everything to come back and have Mum and Dad here, too.”

They returned home to make it six in a row in March with a Caulfield double in the $200,000 VOBIS Gold Sprint (1200m) and a second elite-level triumph over 1200 metres in the Ladbrokes-sponsored $1 million William Reid Stakes.

“He’s not a young horse and he’s been in work for quite a while,” Alderson added. “And he certainly didn’t suffer any ill-effects from that seven-day turnaround at Caulfield last month.

“He’s enjoying racing although it’s a bit hard to place him now, especially with his rating, but Logan knows all his quirks so hopefully that works in our favour on Saturday.”

The Quokka has also come at an opportune time for his sire Manhattan Rain (Encosta De Lago) who is looking for a new home following the sale of Geisel Park Stud. He’s a half-brother to Redoute’s Choice (Danehill) and won the ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) before stints at Arrowfield Stud and Blue Gum Farm.

Apart from Jigsaw, his black-type winners in the last twelve months include Benagil (SAJC Australasian Oaks), New York Lustre (VRC Begonia Belle Stakes), Man Crush (WATC Miss Andretti Stakes) and Sabaj (Cranbourne Cup).

Manhattan Rain’s first WA two-year-old crop is headed by the Luke Fernie-trained Ascot winner Boy Crush who has drawn an inside barrier for the $500,000 Karrakatta Plate (Gr 2, 1200m) at Ascot this Saturday.

Group 1 placegetter Admiration Express headlines MM Digital Sale

Admiration Express (Credit: Magic Millions)

Recently retired Group race winner and Group 1 placegetter Admiration Express (My Admiration) will be offered by Jason Miller Racing during the Magic Millions Digital (17-22 April) Sale, which is now open for bidding.

The grey mare was a triple stakes winner, headlined by victories in the WA Champion Fillies Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) and the Strickland Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m). She also ran just over half-a-length from recent Australian Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) winner Light Infantry Man (Fast Company) in the Northerly Stakes (Gr 1, 1800m).

Admiration Express is one of seven winners from seven to race out of her dam Comme Ci (Verglas), meaning she is a half-sister to fellow stakes placegetters Fred Dag (Patronize) and Janaura (Safeguard).

The remainder of the catalogue also features entries from Arrowfield Training Centre, Attunga Stud, Baramul Stud, Eureka Stud, Fernie Racing, Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, Group One Thoroughbreds, Jack Bruce Racing, Newhaven Park, Portelli Racing, Segenhoe Stud, Silverdale Farm, Steve Wolfe Racing, Stokes Racing and Yarraman Park.

Yarraman Park offer four mares unreserved – all are either stakes performers in their own right or have produced stakes horses – headlined by Set To Unleash (Reset), the dam of Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) winner Houtzen (I Am Invincible).

Other exciting racing prospects include stakes performed three-year-old filly Fierce ‘N Fabulous (Fierce Impact), multiple city winner Hostile Talk (War Chant), stakes-placed Let’sdeal (Dundeel), last-start winners Inca Trail (Menari) and Bifurcation (Pariah) as well as maiden mare Stormy Malice (Ilovethiscity) – who is a half-sister to recent Vinery Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) placegetter Salty Pearl (Tagaloa).

Seven yearlings also feature in the catalogue – by sires including Stay Inside (Extreme Choice), Spirit Of Boom (Sequalo), Shamus Award (Snitzel) and Cool Aza Beel (Savabeel). Attunga Stud offers a Hellbent (I Am Invincible) weanling who is the first foal out of a half-sister to Group 1-placed Eckstein (I Am Invincible).

Persian Wonder bids to break maiden in Champagne

Persian Wonder (Hello Youmzain) is shaping as the latest talent to emerge from the boutique stable of David Payne, with the two-year-old set to tackle Saturday’s Champagne Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at Randwick. A $160,000 Inglis Easter Yearling purchase from Cambridge Stud, the colt has continued to build his profile through the autumn, highlighted by a strong second to Southend (Palace Pier) in the Baillieu Handicap (Gr 3, 1400m). Payne has built a distinguished career, training more than 100 Group 1 winners across South Africa and Australia, and is renowned for producing elite performers including Ace High (High Chaparral) and Montefilia (Kermadec), while continuing to outperform his modest numbers. “I have been in the game a long time and I've been lucky with buying horses,” Payne said. “But you've got to find the horse first. We buy maybe ten at the sales, other stables might buy 250. But we always find one, and we've got a couple there at the moment.” Persian Wonder has put together a series of solid performances this preparation and shapes as one of a select group in the yard alongside recent Warwick Farm winner Bangkok Hottie (Too Darn Hot). Drawn in barrier 11, Payne indicated he will revert to quieter tactics after racing more prominently last start. “It’s a tough race on Saturday so we’ll ride him quiet and see what happens,” he said. “We have been aiming him at this for a while, so we’ll see if he’s good enough.” Chad Schofield regains the ride with James McDonald committed to Campione D’Italia (Snitzel), while Southend and the consistent Miss Chanel (Tagaloa) headline the opposition.

All Aged could be last hurrah for Royal Patronage

Royal Patronage (Wootton Bassett) could bid farewell to racing in Saturday’s All Aged Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Randwick, with a stud career on the horizon. Now owned by Darling View Thoroughbreds, the seven-year-old is set to stand alongside Western Australia’s leading sire Playing God (Blackfriars), but not before a potential final appearance in the $1.5 million weight-for-age feature. Co-trainer Adrian Bott said the stable has taken steps to freshen the horse following an underwhelming spring, including changes to his routine. “My wife has done a lot of work with him. A lot of flat work and dressage work,” Bott, who trains in partnership with Gai Waterhouse, said. “We’ve tried as much as we can to refresh his training and mindset and his approach to it all and he seems back having confidence in himself.” A Group 1 winner of the Canterbury Stakes (1300m), Royal Patronage boasts a strong first-up record, winning three of his six starts fresh, including the Canterbury Stakes and Tramway Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m). Bott is hopeful that profile can hold him in good stead against a high-class field. “His biggest runs in Australia have been first-up,” he said. “You fall back and look at his record, and that’s when he has performed really well and in that distance range as well. He can be effective.” Drawn in barrier six with Tim Clark to ride, he faces a deep line-up that includes elite performers Giga Kick (Scissor Kick), Jimmysstar (Per Incanto), Fangirl (Sebring) and Half Yours (St Jean), with the race shaping as a fitting stage should it prove to be his swansong.

Douglas keen for another Everest crack with Giga Kick

A third tilt at The Everest (Gr 1, 1200m) is firmly on the radar for Giga Kick, with trainer Clayton Douglas eyeing Saturday’s All Aged Stakes at Randwick. The six-year-old, who claimed The Everest in 2022 and finished a narrow second in 2024, has been set for the race following a solid effort in the T J Smith Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m), where he chased home Joliestar (Zoustar). Douglas believes the gelding remains among the nation’s leading sprinters and is deserving of another opportunity at the $20 million feature later this year. “He’s probably still among the top five sprinters in the country,’’ Douglas told Racing NSW. “I’d probably race him in gumboots if they gave me the opportunity. If we could run him in three Everests, he’s a winner and run second and he tends to peak that time of year, it’d be great. Obviously his form needs to warrant it, there’s some nice races in Melbourne through the spring that could be suitable leading into an Everest this time around. With no Moonee Valley a couple of those races have gone to Flemington and Caulfield and it opens the opportunity to prepare in Melbourne and head up for the Everest.” Rachel King takes over on the gelding after partnering him in a recent barrier trial, and Douglas is confident the All Aged Stakes will suit his preparation. “His two 1000-metre runs were always in preparation for a T J and an All Aged,’’ he said. “I’m rapt with the horse, I think he’s probably been a bit forgotten looking at the price of him. It’s a good sized field which I think is suitable.”

King’s Secret set for Hall Mark at Randwick

A luckless last-start defeat has done little to dent confidence in King’s Secret (Shalaa), with jockey Andrew Adkins expecting the progressive sprinter to bounce back in Saturday’s Hall Mark Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Randwick. The Joe Pride-trained four-year-old is a half-brother to Group 1 winner Private Eye (Al Maher) and has continued his rise through the grades, winning six of his 13 starts to date. He was a short-priced favourite in the Star Kingdom Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) three weeks ago but was forced wide from a difficult draw, ultimately finishing unplaced after covering significant ground. Adkins, who has partnered the gelding in five of his six victories, is confident that performance can be forgiven. “Nothing went right for him last start, it was an awkwardly run race for him,’’ Adkins told Racing NSW. “His trial was great the other day, a nice little tickover for him. He’ll set up perfect, he has a good gate [five], there’s speed around him from the right horses and he’ll appreciate being back at Randwick.” The gelding steps up to open company for the first time and will meet his accomplished older half-brother in the process, with Adkins confident he has the talent to measure up. “He deserves his spot in the race and I haven’t forgotten about him,’’ he said. “Private Eye has got better with age and King’s Secret is doing the same thing. He’s continued to get better, he’s maturing, he’s calmed down and is doing things the right way.”

Mornington Cup challenge for Kings Valley

Kings Valley (Credit: Racing Photos)

A Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) ballot exemption is on offer in Saturday’s Mornington Cup (Listed, 2400m), presenting Kings Valley (Territories) with a timely opportunity after he gained a start following the scratching of Plymouth (The Autumn Sun) when fields were finalised on Wednesday. The Ciaron Maher-trained winner of the Bairnsdale Cup (1600m) has been steadily building through the grades and now steps back up to 2400 metres in a race that looks a natural marker for his long term path. Last start he finished ninth in the Easter Cup (Gr 3, 2000m) at Caulfield, but that effort was better than it reads on paper according to assistant trainer Jack Turnbull. "We thought his run was good," Turnbull said. "We had to go back from the gate and the way the track was playing made it difficult and tricky, but the work he put in, we were very pleased with how he went. The thing is this week, we're up in trip from that 2000 [metres] to the 2400 [metres] and the question mark will be whether he relaxes. He can be fierce, but he's not a slow horse. He's got a very good turn of foot, so we've got to work him down a bit into the run. "I think if he stays on, and relaxes, he's a good chance as this is his future." The field includes last-start Easter Cup winner Ambassadorial (Fiorente), along with Sea What I See (Sea The Stars), Immediacy (Tarzino) and the in-form Wymark (Savabeel).

Autumn Mystery not certain for Mornington run

A Mornington Cup start hangs in the balance for Autumn Mystery (The Autumn Sun), with trainer Rory Hunter eager for the progressive three-year-old to gain a run in Saturday’s Listed feature as he builds towards the South Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2500m). Currently second emergency, the gelding has had little luck in this preparation, but his recent performances have been more encouraging than form suggests. His latest outing in the Easter Cup saw him finish tenth, but he was beaten just four lengths and produced the third-fastest final 600 metres despite finding limited galloping room in the straight. That effort has given connections confidence that stepping up to 2400 metres will suit. “I think he’ll be really competitive if he gets a run,” Hunter told Racing.com. “To the viewers out there, his runs probably haven’t looked as good as they have been, but in the Easter Cup, he still clocked the third fastest last 600 metres without a lot of galloping room.” Hunter would prefer to run in the Mornington Cup, not only for the timing into the Derby but also for the significance of having a runner in his hometown feature. If he misses a start, the Chairman’s Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m) in Adelaide is the likely alternative, though that would mean backing up into the Derby on seven days. “We’re trying to avoid the seven-day back-up,” he said. “Going into a Derby we’d much prefer to have those two weeks between runs.” Craig Newitt is set to ride, with the experienced jockey keen to partner the gelding regardless of which path he takes next.

La Fracas team seeking soft ground

A return to more favorable conditions has prompted a change of plan for La Fracas (Night Of Thunder), with the gelding heading back to Victoria for Saturday’s Hareeba Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Mornington to search for wetter ground. The Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained five-year-old had been set for a Sydney campaign, but quick ground has curtailed those ambitions despite two encouraging performances. The Irish-bred gelding failed to strike ideal ground in his two runs in New South Wales, where he still managed to show merit, including a closing seventh-place effort in the Star Kingdom Stakes that saw him the only runner on the day to break 34 seconds for his final 600 metres. "We had him up in our Rosehill stable hoping for some moisture, and it seemed every time we were zigging, the rain was zagging," Michael Kent Jnr said. "First-up 1100 [metres], we went back from the gate, and he worked home well then second-up, he was the only horse all day to break 34 [seconds] last 600 [metres]. He got a long way back and out wide in inferior ground. We had intentions of running him in the Hall Mark [Stakes], but it's very warm and sunny, so we thought the Hareeba looks a beautiful back-up plan. He's won at Mornington before, it's a toe in track and there is rain about and thankfully he's drawn a beautiful gate [four]. He looks poised to run a very good race." Beyond Saturday, connections are expected to keep their options open, with a potential tilt at races in Adelaide, Warrnambool or even a Brisbane campaign should conditions suit, though much will hinge on how he performs at Mornington.

Quartet of juveniles land trials at Rosehill

There were four juvenile trials at Rosehill on Friday, headed by the Tom Charlton-trained Lord Horatio (Stay Inside) who scored at the third time of asking in a 900-metre heat. Ridden by Dylan Gibbons, the Stay Inside (Extreme Choice) colt defeated Qayed (Wootton Bassett) by 2.2 lengths. A $300,000 Magic Millions Yearling Sale purchase for O'Shea-Charlton Racing, James Bester Bloodstock and Eric Lucas, Lord Horatio is the first foal out of the winning More Than Ready (Southern Halo) mare Murchison, herself a half-sister to Coolmore Classic (Gr 1, 1500m) winner Steps In Time (Danehill Dancer). The Team Hawkes-trained Keen To Exceed (Exceedance) scored at the second time of asking, beating $1.8 million yearling Lady Catalina (Written Tycoon) by 1.5 lengths over 900 metres under Tyler Schiller. A $150,000 Magic Millions purchase, Keen To Exceed is a half-brother to metro winners Beauty Tycoon (Written Tycoon), Fearless Writer (Written Tycoon) and Zoukina (Zoustar) being out of the Acclamation (Royal Applause) mare Keena. Another juvenile to score at the second time of asking was the Michael Freedman-trained Uncertain Glory (Zoustar) who defeated Seductra (Tassort) by 1.7 lengths under Rachel King. A $270,000 Inglis Easter purchase, Uncertain Glory is a three-quarter sister-in-blood to the Group 3-placed Celestial Storm (Zoustar) being out of the Group-placed Sebring (More Than Ready) mare Positive Problems. The other juvenile winner on the card was the David Payne-trained Krasina (Russian Revolution), who defeated Mortgage (Street Boss) by 0.4 lengths over 1030 metres. Purchased for $16,000 by Payne at the 2025 Inglis HTBA Yearling Sale, Krasina is a half-sister to Autumn Classic (Gr 2, 1800m) winner Single Choice (Anders).

Trio announced for FBAA Mentorship Program

The Federation of Bloodstock Agents Australia (FBAA) has announced its three successful applicants for the 2026 Mentorship Programme, with Rebecca O’Reilly, Josh Seward and Lachlan Shore selected for the initiative. Now in its third year, the programme will commence on May 11 and continues to provide a leading pathway into the bloodstock Industry, offering structured, hands-on experience through shadowing FBAA members at key sales, including the Magic Millions National Yearling Sale and the Inglis Great Southern Weanling Sale. O’Reilly, who works at Sledmere Stud, brings strong hands-on farm experience alongside a solid academic foundation, while Seward combines his studies with time in the stables of John O’Shea and Tom Charlton. Shore, who has worked for trainer Michael Hickmott, adds further practical grounding and a clear enthusiasm for the industry. Chosen from a competitive applicant pool, the trio were recognised for their horsemanship, commitment to professional development and passion for the industry, with the six-week program running through to June 19.

Great Easter Stakes looming for The Radiant One

The Radiant One (Darci Brahma) finished third in last year’s Great Easter Stakes (Listed, 1400m) and trainer Robert Dennis is keen to try and go two places better with his mare in this year’s edition at Riccarton on ANZAC Day. The seven-year-old daughter of Darci Brahma (Danehill) will ready for that assignment when she heads to her local track of Ascot Park on Sunday to contest the Editor’s Cut Sports Bar Handicap (1200m). She has been freshened since her last start unplaced run in the White Robe Lodge Weight For Age (Gr 3, 1600m) at Wingatui in February, and Dennis is pleased with the way she is tracking and believes Sunday’s run will have her in top order for the Great Easter Stakes. “Her last run was in the White Robe, so she has had a freshen-up and drops back to 1200 metres, which she seems to like,” Dennis said. “She likes running at Invercargill too and we hope to get her up to Riccarton six days later for the Great Easter.” She will be met on Sunday by stablemate Ziggy Stardust (Turn Me Loose), who Dennis said will lap up the wet track conditions, with Ascot Park rated a Heavy 9 on Friday morning. “She should like the heavy ground,” Dennis said. “It is a step up in company to open class but she has been performing consistently other than when we had a go at the Group 3 [South Island Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes] at Riccarton. She has a nice, light weight with Triston [Moodley] on and I would like to think she will be thereabouts.”

Drop in class to favour Too Sweet at Wanganui

Group 2 winner Too Sweet (Satono Aladdin) will have her first run in rating 65 grade at Wanganui on Saturday and trainer Roydon Bergerson believes she will be hard to beat in the Rayner Racing (1360m). The three-year-old daughter of Satono Aladdin (Deep Impact) burst onto the scene last season when winning on debut before taking out the Eclipse Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) two runs later, which placed her among the favoured runners for the Karaka Millions 2YO (RL, 1200m). However, she drew the outside gate in the juvenile feature, which thwarted her chances, and that trend has continued in the majority of her subsequent runs, which have netted a series of midfield finishes and a third placing in the Star Way Stakes (Listed, 1200m). She once again drew wide at Trentham last month where she finished eighth in a strong three-year-old field over 1200 metres, but Bergerson was happy enough with her run and said she was the victim of circumstance once again. “She went really well the other day, she just got flushed three wide and Matt [Cartwright, jockey] said she was trying to mount a run and a horse rolled in on top of her a couple of hundred metres out and he just sat up on her, so she coasted to the line,” he said. “She has pulled up super. She is a good filly, she has just had no luck with the barrier draws.”

Memorable day for Scott

It was a memorable day for Andrew Scott on Friday, firstly hearing the news that his daughter was awarded the NZTR McKenzie Future Leaders Scholarship before he went to Te Rapa, where he and training partner Lance O’Sullivan recorded a winning treble. Scott said his daughter, Maria Scott, has a strong interest in thoroughbred racing and is keen to pursue a career in the industry. He was proud when he heard that she was announced as this year’s recipient of the scholarship, with its $10,000 award helping support her towards completing a Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in marketing, at the University of Auckland. “Maria is a young lady that is very passionate about the industry,” Scott said. “We need the next generation coming through and she has got a keen eye for racing. She was very excited and very grateful [to receive the scholarship]. With children it’s great to see them coming through and taking the next stage in life. Hopefully she finds a good way forward.” Scott was also rapt with his stable’s treble at Te Rapa, which consisted of Little Bit Of Love (Time Test), Prudentia (Proisir) and Miss Bo Peep (Astern). “It was very good for the team and encouraging going into later autumn and winter months with horses we know can handle the conditions and hopefully they have got a good few wins in them,” he said.

HK: Eustace banks on fresh approach with Docklands

Docklands (Credit: HKJC)

Harry Eustace believes a different preparation can unlock an improved performance from Docklands (Massaat) in the Champions Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) on April 26. The six-year-old is no stranger to Hong Kong as he has run in the last two editions of the Hong Kong Mile (Gr 1, 1600m), including a smart fourth-place finish behind Voyage Bubble (Deep Field) in December. The winner of last year’s Queen Anne Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) at Royal Ascot, Docklands will travel to Hong Kong after a comfortable victory in the Doncaster Mile Stakes (Listed, 1m) last month. Eustace said: “The interesting thing about this run this time is that Hong Kong has always been on the way back from something else, and this is the first time it’s the whole point of the trip, so I hope that will help him. He seems fine after Doncaster and it was lovely to see him come back in as good order as ever, and I haven’t had to do much with him since. Towards the end of last year, he was finally running well. Everyone had him down as a straight-track horse, but he put up a good performance in the Hong Kong Mile and he’s becoming more versatile with age. He just allowed himself a better run. He jumped a bit better and put himself into the race and once he does that, he’s obviously got the class to be competitive.”

HK: Purton closing in on century as Aerovolanic bids for hat-trick

Aerovolanic (Credit: HKJC)

Champion jockey Zac Purton goes for a hat-trick of wins on the fast-improving Aerovolanic (Frosted) at Sha Tin on Sunday as he homes in on 100 winners for a tenth straight season. A tally of 98 winners this term looks almost certain to yield him a ninth Hong Kong jockey championship, and the Australian takes a book of seven rides to Sunday’s 11-race fixture with a chance to bring up the century. Among his leading hopes is Pierre Ng-trained Aerovolanic, who is seeking a third-straight win when he tackles the Class 3 Helping Older Adults Age Well Handicap (1400m). The gelding has seen his rating rise a remarkable 17 points in less than two months after a pair of commanding two-length wins under Purton, the most recent in a career-best 1m 21.18s. Purton believes there’s more room for improvement if the four-year-old can overcome a tendency to over-race. “He still hasn’t learned how to manage himself that well,” Purton said. “He really wants to run through the bridle mid-race. He’s been in two races where the sectionals mid-race have been quite solid, and he seems to enjoy that. If he could just learn to drop his head a little bit better, I’m sure he could go to another level again. But he’s full of confidence, so there’s a bit to like about him. Hopefully, we can get another win out of him and get him into the bottom of Class 2 with a lighter weight, I think that would help him."

US: Fillies to the fore at OBS Spring Sale

Fillies featured prominently during Thursday’s session at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales (OBS) Spring Two-Year-Olds in Training Sale, with strong demand at the top end of the market highlighted by a series of standout results so far. On day two of trade a filly by freshman sire Jackie’s Warrior (Maclean’s Music) set a new benchmark when selling for a record US$2.3 million (approx. AU$3.19 million), becoming the highest-priced filly in the history of the sale. That momentum continued into subsequent sessions, with a daughter of Bolt D’Oro (Medaglia D’Oro) topping Day 3 at US$1.3 million (approx. AU$1.8 million) following an impressive breeze, while other fillies also featured prominently among the leading lots. A filly by Liam’s Map (Unbridled’s Song) realised US$925,000 (approx. AU$1.28 million) and a daughter of McKinzie (Street Sense) fetched US$900,000 (approx. AU$1.25 million), ensuring fillies accounted for the top three prices of the session. Thursday’s session saw the day’s gross come in at $26,036,000 (approx. AU$36.18 million) from 143 sold, up 21 per cent compared with the 148 two-year-olds that changed hands a year ago, while the average landed at $182,070 (approx. AU$253,030), up 25 per cent, and the median improved five per cent to $80,000 (approx. AU$111,180).
