Darling View Thoroughbreds has set the bar high in signing Group 1-winning sprinter Royal Patronage (Wootton Bassett) to stand on their roster for 2026, entering at an introductory fee of $16,500 (inc GST).

All purpose and widely travelled, Royal Patronage was straight into stride during a very successful juvenile campaign in England and he also banked a valuable purse in the bluegrass of Kentucky before transferring to Australia to claim some big scalps in the Canterbury Stakes (Gr 1, 1300m) at Randwick last year.

“I had been keeping a close eye on him since he defeated Amelia’s Jewel in the Tramway Stakes about 18 months ago,” Darling View manager Brent Atwell recalled on Tuesday morning.

“She was flying back then and he was first-up in Australia after a long spell. I thought he would be a perfect fit for WA.”

Royal Patronage had been sent to Australia to be trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott and Atwell kept in touch while following his journey out here. He was placed behind Ceolwulf (Tavistock) and Tom Kitten (Harry Angel) in the Epsom Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) at Randwick and returned for a successful elite-level victory in the Canterbury Stakes.

“That was obviously a game-changer and then he had no luck in the Doncaster Mile,” Atwell said.

What's On

“That was arguably his best run in Australia. He was caught three and four wide without cover and was only beaten a lip by Stefi Magnetica.

“I didn’t like our chances of buying a Group 1 winner of that calibre especially after his sire Wootten Basset died, but we were able to clinch a stud deal earlier this month. He’s having a break at The Oaks and will fly over in May.”

Royal Patronage was bred by Dr Emma Capon from an Aga Khan family with a pedigree page wrapped around the Sir Michael Stoute-trained English and Irish Derby (Gr 1, 1m 4f) winner Shahrastani (Nijinsky).

He was sent to Mark Johnston’s yard in the racing hub of Middleham in Yorkshire and broke through in an Epsom nursery prior to making all the running in a highly regarded renewal of the 2021 Acomb Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) at York.

I didn’t like our chances of buying a Group 1 winner of that calibre especially after his sire Wootten Basset died, but we were able to clinch a stud deal earlier this month. He’s having a break at The Oaks and will fly over in May

BRENT ATWELL

“He ran extra well second time out at Sandown and then showed us what we always thought of him at Epsom,” Johnson said after winning the Acomb for a fifth time.

“Horses who win the Acomb are usually Group 1 horses and hopefully Royal Patronage is one, too.”

Raced by Highclere Thoroughbreds, the next stop for Royal Patronage in an outstanding two-year-old campaign was another front-running victory in the Royal Lodge Stakes (Gr 2, 1m).

He bowled along for Jason Hart until William Buick challenged on favourite Coroebus (Dubawi), with the latter pair looking home before Royal Patronage found another gear meeting the rising ground at Newmarket. He ranged back up and grabbed the Godolphin colt in the final strides to score by a neck.

Coroebus would then frank the form the following year in winning the English 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) back at Newmarket and the prestigious St James's Palace Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) at Royal Ascot.

“He’s just a really good horse and, when asked, he finds plenty under pressure,” Johnson said.

“The Godolphin team were standing beside me watching the race and with a furlong to go they thought they would win and, at that stage, so did I.

“It’s great when you’ve got a horse who you’re thinking might stay but is showing so much speed early on as well. That’s ideal.”

Hart also gave him a stamp of approval after the Royal Lodge.

“He over-raced in the early stages and really took off with me but in hindsight it probably helped,” Hart said post-race. “This is a good horse and people keep underestimating him.  He loves good or faster ground and isn’t short of tactical speed.”

Highclere Thoroughbreds would go on to send Royal Patronage to the USA for a fifth placing behind Classic Causeway (Giant’s Causeway) in the Belmont Derby (Gr 1, 10f) the following season, and their colt paid his way with a narrow victory in the Ballyrankin Purse (1700m) on turf at Keeneland.

Tulloch Lodge co-trainers Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott also took an immediate shine to Royal Patronage when he arrived at Randwick following his 300,000gns purchase by the pair in conjunction with Johnny McKeever at the 2023 Tattersalls Autumn Horses-in-Training Sale.

“He’s an incredible horse to do what he did in his first campaign out here,” Bott said after the Canterbury Stakes.

“I always felt there would be some improvement this time around and we’ve seen that today.”

Royal Patronage raced on a very strong pace in the Canterbury before clocking 33.42s for the final 600 metres to deny Here to Shock (Shocking) by 0.4 lengths.

“It was a very strong Group 1 at weight-for-age and being an entire, that’s going to help his value going forward to a stud career,” Bott said.

“He’s one of the most forward Europeans that we’ve had over here. I thought he might have been better suited once we got him deeper into a prep because a mile is probably his sweet spot but this proves he can sprint really well fresh.”

Regular pilot Tim Clark was also full of praise for Royal Patronage.

“The speed was lovely and he was comfortable the whole way,” Clark said. “He filled me with confidence and I knew when I got into a dogfight late he was going to be there for me. He’s a beautiful horse and this proves he’s right up to the elite level.”

His sire Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj) rose from humble beginnings to become one of the world’s leading sires before succumbing to pneumonia aged 17 at Coolmore Australia in September last year.

He stood for €300,000 (approx. AU$493,270) in his final northern hemisphere book following top-level winners Henri Matisse (French 2,000 Guineas), Camille Pissarro (French Derby), Al Riffa (Irish St Leger) and Whirl (Pretty Polly & Nassau Stakes).

His two-year-old Group winners Albert Einstein, Composing, Puerto Rico, Beautify and Nighttime continued the momentum making Wootton Bassett one of last year’s leaders among European juvenile sires.

Royal Patronage will stand at Darling View on a roster headed by WA Champion Sire Playing God (Blackfriars), alongside young bulls Splintex (Snitzel) and Lightsaber (Zoustar). Their fees will be announced next week.

Morning Briefing

Australia

O’Brien has a Good Feeling about his filly

Getta Good Feeling (Credit: Racing Photos)

Getta Good Feeling (So You Think) looks to preserve the unbeaten start to her autumn preparation when she strives for her first Group 1 success in Saturday’s Australasian Oaks (2000m) at Morphettville. The pre-post favourite heads into the $1 million contest in outstanding form, having opened her campaign with back-to-back wins in the $1 million Inglis Sprint (1200m) at Flemington and the Alexandra Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) over the Caulfield mile. Danny O’Brien deliberately bypassed Sydney’s autumn carnival to target the Oaks and, after drawing barrier five, the in-form trainer grew in confidence that his exciting filly can justify her place at the head of the betting markets. “She has come back very well this prep,” said O’Brien. “Both starts she has won, then she trialled up really well and this was always her target for the autumn. We specifically didn’t get her ready for Sydney because we wanted to have a crack at this race, over 2000 metres, and everything’s gone to plan so far.” O’Brien, who won the South Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) with Russian Camelot (Camelot) back in 2020, revealed that a trip north to Brisbane to contest the Queensland Oaks (Gr 1, 2200m) is potentially on the cards for Getta Good Feeling. “She’s fit and well, and I’m sort of half minded that if she won the Oaks in Adelaide on Saturday, then we’d take her to Brisbane for the Oaks up there,” he said. “I thought I’d rather have another run up my sleeve for later, rather than get another one into her now.”

J-Mac set tricky task in Adelaide

James McDonald’s quest for a maiden Group 1 in South Australia has been hampered after both his mounts were handed potentially tricky draws on Tuesday morning. The world’s best jockey will jump from the inside gate on Generosity (Divine Prophet) in the Robert Sangster Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m), and he will need to be at his brilliant best to pilot Panova (Trapeze Artist) to victory from barrier 16 in the Australasian Oaks (Gr 1, 2000m). Generosity, who has been slated to join the throng of Australian sprinters bound for Royal Ascot, has been kept well away from her main market rivals in the Sangster, with the well-fancied trio of Point Barrow (Blue Point), Charm Stone (I Am Invincible) and Skybird (Exosphere) all drawing double figure gates. Panova is on the fourth line of betting behind the red-hot favourite Getta Good Feeling, who has drawn barrier five for trainer Danny O’Brien and jockey Billy Egan. Second favourite Salty Pearl (Tagaloa) will jump from barrier three for Ciaron Maher as the grey filly bids to land a first Group 1 success for her Yulong-based sire.

Aviatress aims high for her final prep

Despite being handed the visitor’s draw on their home track, Richard and Chantelle Jolly are hopeful classy mare Aviatress (Smart Missile) can embellish her final racing campaign with a maiden Group 1 triumph in Saturday’s Robert Sangster Stakes. Aviatress has been a model of consistency throughout her career, although she has never tasted success at racing’s highest level and will need to rebound from a sub-standard run in the Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Caulfield at the end of January. The mare was subsequently sent for a brief spell and having tuned up for her return to competitive action with a slick trial, Aviatress will seek to extend an immaculate fresh record at Morphettville this Saturday – having never finished outside the top three in six first-up runs. If she were to navigate a path to victory from the outside alley, it would significantly increase her residual value in the breeding barn, which will be tested on the opening market when she goes through the ring at next month’s Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale. “We thought we’d have a crack at this race first-up, and then she’ll get another opportunity on Goodwood Day,” Richard Jolly told Racing.com. “Then after that, she’s off to the broodmare sale. We’d all love to get a Group 1 with her, or even if she could finish in the top three, it would do wonders for her price tag. She’s obviously a very valuable mare anyway, but it would enhance her appeal if she had a Group 1 next to her name.”

Melbourne Cup hero primed for his comeback

Knight's Choice (Credit: Supplied)

Ahead of Knight’s Choice’s (Extreme Choice) eagerly anticipated return to racing, co-trainer Sheila Laxon senses the rising seven-year-old is ready for a second coming despite having made just one race start since his shock Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) triumph in 2024. Knight’s Choice hasn’t been sighted at the races since the start of September last year, but he tuned up for his comeback in Saturday’s Brisbane Handicap (Listed, 1600m) at Eagle Farm with a pair of impressive recent trials at Geelong. Those hitouts have instilled Laxon and co-trainer John Symons with the belief that the gelding can recapture the form which saw him defy a starting price of $91 to claim the country’s most famous race. Given his aversion to wet tracks, Laxon chose to avoid the Melbourne winter and instead send their stable star north to Queensland, where he previously enjoyed notable success including victory in the 2023 Winx Guineas (Gr 3, 1600m). “I don’t think horses really mature until they are six or seven, so who knows what he can still do?” Laxon told Racing.com. “He travelled up to the Gold Coast and arrived at the start of the week, and all going well he’ll be there on Saturday at Eagle Farm. I am really delighted with the way he’s performing. He’s been to the trials, and I was surprised to see him go so well. He actually seems to have come back bigger and better than ever.”

Plymouth primed for Flemington test

The incentive of a Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) golden ticket wasn’t enough for Lindsay Park to risk running Plymouth (The Autumn Sun) from a wide gate at Mornington last week, so the Hayes brothers are hopeful of a more accommodating draw when the stayer drops to Benchmark grade at Flemington on Saturday. Having drawn barrier 17 in the Mornington Cup (Listed, 2400m), connections pulled the pin on Plymouth’s intended run and changed tack to this Saturday’s Open Handicap over 2000 metres, which is on the support card on ANZAC Day Raceday. Kings Valley (Territories), who ultimately swept to victory in the Mornington Cup to secure a start in the Caulfield Cup later this year, jumped from barrier six and with the tight turning track at Mornington making life difficult for backmarkers, co-trainer Ben Hayes believes the stable’s decision to scratch the gelding was vindicated. “Unfortunately, drawing 17 over 2400 metres at Mornington, we didn’t feel it was right to run him,” Hayes, who trains in partnership with his brothers JD and Will, said. “He needed a nice barrier. Last start [in the Easter Cup] he drew well but we still ended up too far back, so we decided to scratch from Mornington and he will head towards the 2000-metre race at Flemington on Saturday. After that, and depending on his performance, he could then head towards the Warrnambool Cup.” The Warrnambool Cup (Listed, 2350m), a race Lindsay Park last won with Furrion (Camelot) in 2019 when Hayes’ famous father David was head trainer, will be run as part of the May Racing Carnival on May 7.

Exceed And Excel and Ole Kirk juveniles impress at trials

There were four juvenile barrier trials held at Randwick on Tuesday, with Godolphin filly Semantics (Exceed And Excel) turning heads with a 1.8 lengths success over 745 metres. Ridden by Dylan Gibbons for trainers Anthony and Sam Freedman, the daughter of Exceed And Excel (Danehill) defeated stablemate Zoo Dazzler (Zoustar) with a further 0.8 lengths back to Tumorrama (St Mark's Basilica) in third. Semantics is out of the metro-winning Street Cry (Machiavellian) mare Philosophy, herself a daughter of Group 2 winner Renaissance (Lonrho) and from the family of Group 1 scorer Unworldly (Quest For Fame). Another to catch the eye was the Tom Charlton-trained Punxsutawney Phil (Ole Kirk), with the Neil Werrett homebred beating Our Emperor (Stay Inside) by 0.6 lengths under Zac Lloyd. The Ole Kirk (Written Tycoon) colt is the first foal out of the winning Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) mare Heroess, herself a daughter of dual Group 1 winner Srikandi (Dubawi). The other two juvenile winners on the card were fellow Tom Charlton-trained gelding Lord Elrond (Shalaa), who scored by 3.2 lengths over Warshade (Bivouac), and the Gary Sargent-trained Rocks Or Diamonds (Fastnet Rock), who defeated All Over Harry (Harry Angel) by 0.1 lengths.

Lawson-Carroll aims to ace the Oaks

Just one month after returning to the saddle following a serious race fall, Ace Lawson-Carroll will cross the Tasman to ride Kiwi raider Bona Sforza (Written By) in the $1 million Australasian Oaks (Gr 1, 2000m) on Saturday. The South Auckland apprentice jockey is on the comeback trail after suffering career-threatening injuries in the fall last July, but he has hit the ground running with a stakes win on Bona Sforza at Riccarton ten days ago. The filly’s victory persuaded trainer Samantha Finnegan to plot a path towards the Australasian Oaks, although her prospects of winning a first Group 1 were dealt a severe blow when she was assigned gate 20 at Tuesday morning’s barrier draw. However, given the extended spell he spent in hospital and his subsequent rehabilitation, a minor setback such as a wide draw is unlikely to cause Lawson-Carroll any sleepless nights. “I broke my neck, I had a hip replacement and I also had surgery on my collarbone,” the 21-year-old said. “I lost a fair bit of feeling in my foot through not being able to use it much, and I was slowly trying to get movement back into my legs. I did a lot of rehab with it to try and get it mobile, which was the biggest thing.” Lawson-Carroll is unbeaten in two rides on Bona Sforza, and is relishing the opportunity to resume the partnership in Saturday’s $1 million feature at Morphettville. “I am very grateful and very excited,” he said. “It will open up more doors for myself, and it’s a great opportunity to get over there and see what racing is like across the ditch.”

Fawcett on road to recovery

After suffering potentially serious injuries in a training track accident late last month, lightweight jockey Jasmine Fawcett is well on the road to recovery. The 32-year-old was ambulanced to Waikato Hospital on March 26 following a nasty fall at the Matamata track. Initial scans and x-rays revealed a brain bleed and neck fracture, however she was released from hospital three days later after being cleared of major damage. “As it turned out it was only a minor bleed that was under control pretty quickly and the C7 vertebrae in my neck was also able to heal without any need for surgery,” Fawcett said during a visit to the Matamata track on Tuesday morning. “It wasn’t any fun what happened and it could have been a lot worse, but the main thing is I’m well on the way to a full recovery. I’m due to have my next check-up in two weeks, which will be six weeks since the accident, and all going well I’ll get a clearance to resume riding. If that’s the case, plan A will be to get back riding at the Rotorua Cup meeting, so I’m hopeful that’s how things will play out.”

HK: Hayes has his eyes on another The Everest title

Ka Ying Rising (Credit: HKJC)

Ahead of Ka Ying Rising’s (Shamexpress) bid to claim a 20th successive win in Sunday’s Chairman’s Sprint Prize (Gr 1, 1200m), David Hayes has confirmed the freakish five-year-old will embark on a hit-and-run Australian mission to defend his title in The Everest (Gr 1, 1200m) later this year. Ka Ying Rising will aim to complete another unblemished season in Hong Kong on Champions Day at Sha Tin, before heading for a spell and building towards a return visit to Sydney for the world’s richest race on turf. Hayes had initially indicated the globe’s highest-rated sprinter would also contest the $3 million Russell Balding Stakes (1300m) at Randwick, but those plans have now been revised with the Hong Kong Jockey Club requesting Ka Ying Rising’s early return to Asia to compete at the first official meeting held at China’s Conghua racecourse. Last year, the nine-time Group 1 winner won The Everest by 1.2 lengths from the fast-finishing Tempted (Street Boss), and ahead of his title defence Hayes feels both trainer and horse will be better for the experience. “Travelling to Sydney is no longer a concern with Ka Ying Rising after the experience of last year,” Hayes said. “When we got the horse to Sydney last year, he was learning a bit and got it a bit wrong initially but I don’t think he will next time. I’ve also learned that we probably need to do a bit more work with him before he goes to Sydney. I might have been a bit easy on him last year, but he still won The Everest pretty easily in the end. So it will be some fine-tuning from what we learned last year.”

HK: Leung likes the look of Lucky Sweynesse’s chances

Lucky Sweynesse (Sweynesse) will aim to cement his new status as one of Hong Kong’s leading milers when he contests this Sunday’s Champions Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) at Sha Tin. One of Hong Kong’s most popular horses with 17 wins from 33 starts, Lucky Sweynesse was formerly kept to sprint distances but the experienced galloper has found his calling as a serious miler in more recent times. The four-time Group 1 winner, who is trained by Manfred Man, finished runner-up behind Danny Shum’s superstar Romantic Warrior (Acclamation) in January’s Stewards’ Cup (G1, 1600m) before winning the Chairman’s Trophy (G2, 1600m) on April 6. Man has slowly nurtured Lucky Sweynesse back to form and fitness after the gelding suffered a spate of niggling injuries, and with Lucky Sweynesse now seemingly back to his best, regular rider Derek Leung is excited to renew acquaintances with the seven-year-old in a contest which features five Group 1 winners. “Every time he tries his hardest,” said Leung. “He’s only been beaten by Ka Ying Rising and Romantic Warrior in his last two starts. He’s very honest, and last time it was his turn to get the win. I’m very happy with him, I worked him on Monday and he’s working well. The stable looks after him very well, and his form is very consistent. Manfred [Man] and his team have done a very good job to make him healthy again, and his form is back.”

HK: Murphy wary of opponents for Royal Champion

Oisin Murphy is relishing the prospect of tackling some of Hong Kong’s - and indeed the world’s - best horses when he competes on Champions Day at Sha Tin. The five-time British champion jockey will be reunited with Royal Champion (Shamardal) for the QEII Cup (Gr 1, 2000m), having partnered the Karl Burke-trained galloper to his first Group 1 success - at the ripe old age of eight - in the Turf Cup (2100m) in Saudi Arabia back in February. Despite that landmark win, given the quality of opposition Royal Champion will face in the QEII Cup this Sunday, Murphy is acutely aware that his mount will need to improve several lengths if he is to make it back-to-back Group 1 wins. “I think they all bring a strong level of form, they all have proper Group 1 form,” said Murphy. “Romantic Warrior has achieved more than most horses, he’s been absolutely extraordinary and it’s a very good renewal of the race. Obviously, we don’t know the make-up of the race speed-wise yet, but hopefully it will be pretty straightforward for my horse. He seems to enjoy racing in a similar position to Romantic Warrior. When everything is final, we’ll be able to see what the race looks like. I suppose in an ideal world, there’s a bit of speed on and everyone gets a good trip around and it’s a nice fair race.” Murphy will also ride Comanche Brave (Wootton Bassett) for Donnacha O’Brien in the Chairman’s Sprint Prize (Gr 1, 1200m), where his rivals include David Hayes’ sprinting sensation Ka Ying Rising.

IRE: O’Brien readies his troops for the Derby

Aidan O’Brien has mapped out plans for his two leading contenders in the Epsom Derby (Gr 1, 1m4f), including the stable’s highly progressive colt Benvenuto Cellini (Frankel). The three-year-old powered to an emphatic victory as the odds-on favourite in the Champions Juvenile Stakes (Gr 2, 1m) at Leopardstown last September, before placing behind stablemate Hawk Mountain (Wootton Bassett) in the Futurity Trophy Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) at Doncaster. He currently heads the Derby market at 6/1 and O’Brien will give Benvenuto Cellini the chance to strengthen that position in the Chester Vase (Gr 3, 1m 4f) next month.
Stablemate Lambourn (Australia) won the same race 12 months ago before subsequently sealing an 11th Derby success for O’Brien. “Benvenuto Cellini has done well, we’re very happy with him and he’s a lovely slick-moving horse,” said O’Brien. “Chester is a great place to wake the horses up and get an edge back on them, usually the ground is perfect and they come out of their races very well. There’s also a great atmosphere there, which horses can really benefit from.” Benvenuto Cellini deposed stablemate Pierre Bonnard (Camelot) at the head of the betting markets after the latter finished seventh as the even-money favourite in the Ballysax Stakes (Gr 3, 1m2f) last weekend. Despite the plain effort O’Brien urged supporters not to lose faith with the colt, saying: “He’s going to go back to Leopardstown and we think he’s going to leave that run well behind him. He’s a big, powerful horse and we think he’ll bounce back.”
