Superstar shuttler Too Darn Hot (Dubawi) will once again headline Darley Australia's roster for 2026 as the top-class nursery revealed a 16-strong team across both Kelvinside and Northwood Park on Thursday.

Having stood the 2025 breeding season for $275,000 (all fees inc GST), the son of Dubawi (Dubai Millennium) will remain at that fee for the new season.

What's On

A three-time Group 1 winner on the track, and a Champion 2YO to boot, Too Darn Hot has made an exceptional start to life at stud. He has a higher Group winners-to-runners ratio than any stallion since Redoute’s Choice (Danehill), and has also produced a million-dollar yearling in each of his first four crops.

From 157 Australian runners to date, Too Darn Hot has sired 102 winners with 16 of them coming at stakes level and ten at Group level, operating at a stakes winners-to-runners ratio of a whopping 10.2 per cent - headed by elite-level winners Broadsiding (who also stands on the roster) and Tropicus.

Also heading up the team at New South Wales' Kelvinside base is Anamoe (Street Boss), another top-class racehorse that has delivered in the sales ring and who is also unchanged from 2025 at $110,000.

The son of Street Boss (Street Cry) has managed the best first crop average in history at the sales, with over 60 yearlings having been sold at an average of $400,000, led by a $1.1 million top lot.

Anamoe was a nine-time Group 1 winner on the track, leading to him being crowned Australian Horse of the Year in 2023.

"We have a total of 16 stallions across both Kelvinside and Northwood Park, between them there are 43 Group 1 wins and 12 champion titles, so we are spoilt for riches in terms of the quality of stallion that we offer at Darley Australia," Darley Kelvinside's nominations manager Arvin Chadee told ANZ News.

"The roster is a beautiful blend between exciting first-season sires, proven sires and then future champions. Our whole roster can serve any price point and it can serve any breeder demands or market requirements."

Other standout performers on the track that are now making headlines as excellent shuttle sires are Ghaiyyath (Dubawi) and Harry Angel (Dark Angel).

Four-time Group 1 winner Ghaiyyath, who was crowned the World’s Best Racehorse of 2020, boasts an exceptional 11 per cent stakes winners-to-runners ratio from his first southern hemisphere crop, spearheaded by Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) and Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) hero Observer, who joins his father on the Northwood Park roster this year after his retirement this week.

Ghiayyath is returning to Darley Australia at a fee of $88,000 having last stood in 2024 at $27,500.

Meanwhile Harry Angel, himself a dual elite-level winner on the track, will be returning for the eighth consecutive year at an increased fee of $88,000 (up from $66,000) following top-drawer performances from the likes of All-Star Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) hero Tom Kitten, War Machine and Angel Capital.

Our biggest advantage at Darley would be the fact that the Godolphin race plans support their stallions heavily,” Chadee said when asked on stallions’ performances on the track.

“So a lot of people would have supported Harry Angel at the start of his stallion career when he was standing for less than $20,000 and they would've reaped huge sale rewards from it thus far, with an obvious one being Tom Kitten.

“Too Darn Hot is the same, having initially stood for $44,000 and having had Broadsiding be successful on the track, it then improved the sales of Too Darn Hot's progeny following this success.

“We try to get our horses to win as many stakes races as possible, as that only has a positive effect on breeders then selling yearlings by our stallions.”

Ghaiyyath’s dual Classic-winning son Observer has been introduced at $33,000, while sprinting star Tentyris (Street Boss) – also announced this week – will be available at Kelvinside for $88,000.

“The public and market reaction to announcing both Tentyris and Observer has been astronomical,” Chadee revealed.

“They have been extremely popular as you can imagine, and we're so fortunate here at Darley that we get the chance to stand stallions with as much quality as Tentyris, the fastest Coolmore Stud Stakes winner in history. He was a true Australian speed machine.

“Then on the flipside of that we also get to stand a beautiful son of Ghaiyyath in Observer, who is probably the most exciting new sireline from that Dubawi line alongside Too Darn Hot.

Street Boss (Credit: Darley)

“He was an Australian Guineas winner and, in terms of his stallion profile, he is the first Guineas winner over a mile from that Dubawi sireline to stand in Australia since Night Of Thunder, and we know how well he did. They have both been very popular.”

Depth in the roster is signified through stallions such as Broadsiding ($55,000), shuttlers Pinatubo (Shamardal) ($27,500) and Native Trail (Oasis Dream) ($22,000), who were all champion juveniles, and Victorian stalwart Street Boss – who has sired four individual Group 1 winners this season alone and remains unchanged at $66,000.

Chadee, however, is most looking forward to seeing the continuation of support for Street Boss son Traffic Warden at an unchanged fee of $22,000. Traffic Warden won both the VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) and The Run To The Rose (Gr 2, 1200m) and enjoyed plenty of support at Kelvinside in 2025 ahead of his first foals this spring.

“One of my favourite dark horses on the roster and one of my favourite types is Traffic Warden,” Chadee said.

“When he comes out of the barn at Kelvinside people just fall over backwards about how much of a beautiful specimen he is.

“It's no secret how well Street Boss has done this year with the likes of Tempted and Tentyris, Pericles and Green Spaces, and Traffic Warden was the epitome of pure two-year-old speed.

“In his first year at stud when people saw him they could just envisage taking a yearling with his physical to the top sales knowing that the buying bench wanted really fast and precious two-year-old types, and that is exactly what Traffic Warden is.

“He had an unbelievable first book and Godolphin heavily supported him, so I think he is really one to follow closely as a stallion that will take the Street Boss sireline forward.”

The roster is a beautiful blend between exciting first-season sires, proven sires and then future champions. Our whole roster can serve any price point and it can serve any breeder demands or market requirements.

ARVIN CHADEE

Another that Chadee mentioned at Kelvinside is Bivouac (Exceed And Excel), who’s had a breakout season in the barn having sired Beiwacht to victory in the Golden Rose (Gr 1, 1400m) – where he broke the Rosehill track record – and last weekend’s All Aged Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Randwick. He will stand at a fair fee of $33,000, down from $55,000 in both 2025 and 2024 and $66,000 in his three prior years at stud.

“One of the stallions at Kelvinside that I am very proud of is Bivouac. I thought his first two-year-olds were amazing, with three stakes winners including Beiwacht who won the Silver Slipper,” Chadee said.

“Just like Bivouac we knew they would continue to get better with age, but to be honest we did not envisage what he would do with his three-year-old crop.

“Bewiacht smashed the Rosehill track record in the Golden Rose and, in terms of first-season stallions who sired a Golden Rose winner in their first crop, he is in the same bracket as Too Darn Hot and Zoustar’s father Northern Meteor so that is very elite company to be in.

Observer (Credit: Darley)

“Beiwacht would also go on to land the All Aged Stakes at weight-for-age level last weekend, so I really think Bivouac is a stallion that is on a real upward trajectory and breeders can now see the quality in his progeny and what they can do on the racetrack.

“He's one I'm very proud of and excited about and since his progeny are showing up massively on the racetrack, his sales prices have also improved with his Inglis Easter yearly average continuing to rise year-on-year.”

Rounding out the roster for Darley Australia are Newmarket Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Cylinder (Exceed And Excel) ($33,000), who will have his first weanlings offered this year, and Brazen Beau (I Am Invincible) ($27,500), who enjoyed another excellent autumn with a spate of recent stakes performers. Kermadec (Teofilo) ($11,000) and Paulele (Dawn Approach) ($11,000) also offer proven and accessible options for breeders.

“This is an amazing lineup of stallions. It’s hard to imagine a better roster,” Andy Makiv, managing director of Godolphin Australia, said.

“Stallions that have won the right races, with the right pedigrees and producing the right results. The diversity of our roster certainly gives breeders a choice and a wonderful opportunity.”

Morning Briefing

Australia

Three-time stakes winner Admiration Express sells for $280,000

Admiration Express (Credit: Magic Millions)

Dual Group 3-winning Perth racemare Admiration Express (My Admiration) topped the Magic Millions Digital Sale on Wednesday when selling for $280,000. The multiple stakes winner and Group 1 runner-up was offered as a breeding prospect by the stable that raced her with great success, Jason Miller Racing. Boomer Bloodstock teamed up with leading West Australian thoroughbred nursery Greenfields Lodge to secure the grey six-year-old, who earned over $966,000 across her racing career. Admiration Express was purchased by Miller for $60,000 at the 2021 Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale from the draft of Namerik Thoroughbreds. Her feature wins came in the WA Champion Fillies Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) and Strickland Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m). She also won the Ascot 1,000 Guineas (Listed, 1800m). It was in one of her six placed stakes runs that showed her quality and ability to a national audience – when running second in the Northerly Stakes (Gr 1, 1800m) to Light Infantry Man (Fast Company). “It is a great result,” Miller said. “We are obviously a bit sad because she was a very special horse for us. She’s going to a good home and we wish her new owners the very best of luck." Magic Millions head of digital Bryce Bevan added: “First and foremost, we thank Jason Miller and connections for entrusting us with the sale of their special mare. After initially passing in, a deal was brought together very quickly post-auction which I believe is a reflection of the relationships Magic Millions has with clients on both sides of the transaction.” Entries for the Magic Millions Digital (1-6 May) Sale are open and will close on Wednesday, April 29. Salty Pearl spearheads Maher’s Oaks assault

Consistent filly Salty Pearl (Tagaloa) will look to cap a demanding campaign with Group 1 success in the Australasian Oaks (Gr 1, 2000m) at Morphettville on Saturday for trainer Ciaron Maher. The Group 2-winning three-year-old has proven a model of durability, with Saturday’s assignment marking her sixth run of the preparation, adding to a four-start spring campaign. She arrives off a strong third in the Vinery Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at Rosehill and will again be asked to travel, having already successfully ventured interstate this preparation. Maher’s assistant Jack Turnbull said the filly’s toughness had been key to her consistency. “She’s just a wonderful horse to train,” Turnbull said. “She’s incredibly consistent and doesn’t take any extra work to manage. She’s very hardy, which is fantastic.” Salty Pearl’s preparation has included a jump-out between runs, while her trip to Adelaide has been broken up with a stopover at the stable’s Ballarat base. “It’s always a challenge to travel and maintain form, but she handled Sydney well. The question is whether she can do it again in Adelaide,” Turnbull said. Stablemate Paltrow Miss (Circus Maximus) will also represent the yard, bringing a contrasting profile with just three career starts. The filly has impressed since arriving from New Zealand, where she broke her maiden, winning first-up at Sandown-Hillside before finishing second at Caulfield. “It’s the right time of year to give her that chance,” Turnbull said. Ben Allen rides Salty Pearl, with Craig Williams aboard Paltrow Miss.

Howley and Kelly out for Group 1 breakthrough with Naraghi

Saturday’s Australasian Oaks could provide a breakthrough Group 1 success for trainer Liam Howley and jockey Alana Kelly, with Kyneton filly Naraghi (Hello Youmzain) set to line up as an outsider with upside. Howley, who trained two Group 1 winners during his time as a private trainer to Lloyd Williams, is chasing a maiden elite-level success since branching out on his own five years ago. His best result thus far came with Virtuous Circle’s (Almanzor) runner-up finish in the 2023 Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m). “To win a Group 1 with a horse you’ve bought and developed from the outset would be the ultimate,” Howley told Racing.com. Purchased for $260,000 from Karaka, Naraghi has taken time to find her profile, stepping up in trip to reflect her staying pedigree on her dam side. Out of Lookin At Lucky (Smart Strike) mare Our Abbadean – a dual Group 2 winner over 2000 metres – Naraghi has improved with distance, highlighted by a 1590-metre maiden win at Wangaratta and a solid third in the Auraria Stakes (Gr 3, 1800m) last time out. “She’s gone from strength to strength once we stretched her out,” Howley said. “She’s at the top of her game and racing really well.” Naraghi is expected to roll forward again and would benefit from a softer surface, with Howley confident she can give a competitive showing despite her $81 odds. Kelly, set for just her third Group 1 ride, retains the mount having built a strong association with the filly. “Alana works well with this type of filly as she can be a bit cantankerous, but she rides her really well,” Howley said. “The ownership group was keen to stick with Alana after her maiden win. She’s done nothing wrong and she deserves her chance.”

Freedmans launch two-pronged Sangster attack

Anthony and Sam Freedman will launch a two-pronged attack on Saturday’s Robert Sangster Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) with Point Barrow (Blue Point) and Ameena (Tassort) out to deliver the father-and-son duo a first success in the Morphettville feature. Point Barrow is the stable’s number one hope, with the three-year-old having built a consistent profile this preparation, winning the Don Casboult Classic (Gr 3, 1200m) last month after an Oakleigh Plate (Gr 1, 1100m) fifth in February. Sam Freedman said the Sangster has long been the filly’s target and likened her racing pattern to former winner Shoals (Fastnet Rock), who stormed home to claim the race in 2018 for his father. “She’s coming in with the strongest form,” he said. “Shoals had a similar style, getting back and running on, and for a three-year-old filly I wouldn’t swap her with anything in the race.” Stablemate Ameena returns first-up, having not been seen since the spring, but enters off four jump-outs. The mare followed a similar path last year when finishing second in the race before backing up for a fourth placing in The Goodwood (Gr 1 ,1200m). “She ran brilliantly fresh in this race last year and we’ve followed the same plan,” Freedman said.

Profligate set for stakes bid at Flemington

Trainer Grahame Begg will give promising filly Profligate (Xtravagant) a shot at black type when she steps out in the Anzac Day Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at Flemington on Saturday. The lightly raced two-year-old will be having just her second start after an encouraging debut win over 1200 metres at Pakenham earlier this month, with Begg keen to capitalise on a lack of suitable options before sending her for a spell. “I wanted to give her another run before I turn her out and there really wasn’t another race,” Begg said. “She wasn’t fully wound up first-up but still got the job done, so we thought we’d roll the dice.” The step up to 1400 metres and Flemington’s expansive circuit are expected to suit the daughter of Xtravagant (Pentire), who shapes as a filly with upside heading towards her three-year-old season. “She’s a big, leggy filly who will continue to furnish,” Begg said. “She’s pretty raw but has ability and could develop into a nice spring filly.” Profligate is a half-sister to Group 1-placed Encap (Capitalist) and is expected to be given a break following Saturday’s assignment.

Cumani chases second Leger win with Deal Done Fast

Trainer Matt Cumani is hoping promising stayer Deal Done Fast (Dundeel) can shed his maiden tag when he lines up in the VRC St Leger (Listed, 2800m) on Saturday. A Group 1 placegetter in last spring’s Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m), the colt has shown stakes-level ability but remains winless after seven starts, with his tendency to begin slowly proving costly this preparation. “He’s starting to develop a pattern of being slow away, which is frustrating,” Cumani said. “We’ve done some barrier work and he’s improving, but he’s just a bit slow into stride.” Deal Done Fast again missed the kick when unplaced in the Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) at Randwick last start, prompting the stable to focus on sharpening his early manners ahead of the step up in trip. Cumani is hopeful the 2800 metres at Flemington will offset any early issues. “If he does it again, at least he’ll have time to make up ground,” he said. Despite his maiden status, Cumani believes the colt has the talent to measure up at stakes level and has resisted the temptation to press on to the South Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2500m), instead focusing on securing a breakthrough win. “He’s an unlucky maiden and it would be nice to get that sorted,” he said. Stablemate Te Taniwha (Ocean Park) will also contest the race, with Cumani confident the trip will suit the lightly performed stayer.

Lees’ lightly raced duo out to impress at Randwick

Trainer Kris Lees will rely on promising three-year-olds Night Agent (Brutal) and Cantiamo (Too Darn Hot) to headline his Anzac Day runners at Randwick, with Provincial-Midway Championships Final (1400m) winner Lord Of Biscay (Lope De Vega) instead set for the Tamworth Cup (1400m). Initially an early favourite for Randwick’s First Australian Imperial Force Handicap (1500m), Lord Of Biscay will head north-west in search of Big Dance (1600m) eligibility, leaving Lees to focus on his emerging talent in Sydney. Night Agent steps into Saturday metropolitan company in the Last Post Handicap (1400m) after back-to-back wins, including a dominant ten-length victory at provincial level followed by a strong Hawkesbury midweek success. “He’s won well both times, but we’ve decided to drop him back to 1400 metres,” Lees said. “It’s probably a more suitable trip at this stage.” Cantiamo also returns to Benchmark grade over 1200 metres after holding her own in stakes company, most recently finishing a competitive sixth in the P J Bell Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m). Lees has earmarked a potential return to black type in the Denise’s Joy Stakes (Listed, 1100m) at Scone should she perform to expectations this weekend. “It’s a little drop back in grade and she’s going well,” he said.

Cristal Clear ready to rebound after Doncaster mishap

Annabel Archibald and Rob Archibald could trim their Anzac Day presence at Randwick, with a decision pending on whether to divide their squad between Sydney and Tamworth. Hellsing (Dandy Man) and Formal Display (Too Darn Hot) are dual acceptors for the First Australian Imperial Force Handicap at Randwick and the Tamworth Cup, with the latter offering Big Dance eligibility. “One or two might end up in Tamworth. We’ll compare the two races,” Rob Archibald said. Even if both head north, the stable retains a strong hand in the Randwick feature, headed by Cristal Clear (Exceedance), who drops back to Benchmark 100 grade after an unplaced run in the Doncaster Mile (Gr 1, 1600m). Archibald revealed the gelding had excuses after his saddle slipped mid-race. “I’m confident he can bounce back,” he said. Depth Of Character (Deep Field) and Group 1 winner Port Lockroy (Better Than Ready) both resume, with the former returning for the first time since the Magic Millions Cup (1400m) and the latter dropping sharply in grade. “Both are getting underway and will improve into their Brisbane targets,” Archibald said. Depth Of Character faces a tricky draw and is likely to settle back, while Port Lockroy profiles similarly first-up. Cristal Clear shapes as the stable’s leading Randwick chance, with market moves hinging on the final placement of Hellsing and Formal Display.

Away Game filly steps out at Randwick

Blueblood filly Lady Catalina (Written Tycoon) will look to continue her measured rise when she lines up at Randwick on Saturday for Ciaron Maher. The Resolute Racing-owned $1.8 million purchase is the first foal out of high-class juvenile Away Game (Snitzel), whose demanding two-year-old campaign included wins in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) and Percy Sykes Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m), along with placings in the Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) and the Robert Sangster Stakes. In contrast, Lady Catalina has been handled patiently and will be having just her second start in the HMAS Sydney Handicap (1100m) following an encouraging debut win over 900 metres at Newcastle. Maher’s Sydney foreman Johann Gerard-Dubord said the filly had taken time to develop but had shown steady improvement. “She’s a very different horse to Away Game. Away Game was very natural and very early,” he said. “We’ve taken our time with her and she’s developed physically.” Despite showing early speed, Lady Catalina is expected to benefit from stepping up to 1100 metres after working hard throughout her debut before finishing off strongly. “She was at her top for most of the race, but she was good late, so the extra trip will suit,” Gerard-Dubord said. A recent trial has maintained confidence within the stable, and if she performs to expectations, a shot at next month’s Woodlands Stakes (Listed, 1100m) at Scone is likely.

Bayliss bullish on Extremely Tempted

Jockey Regan Bayliss believes exciting colt Extremely Tempted (Extreme Choice) has only scratched the surface of his ability as he too prepares to make his second start at Randwick on Saturday. The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained son of Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt) made a dominant impression on debut over 1100 metres at Hawkesbury earlier this month, leading throughout to score comfortably, and Bayliss expects further improvement in the HMAS Sydney Handicap. “I’m a big believer that whatever you see this prep, you’ll see a much better horse in the spring,” Bayliss told Racing NSW. “He’s still strengthening and growing into his frame.” Bred by Gooree Park Stud, Extremely Tempted was a $550,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast purchase for his trainers, Kestrel Thoroughbreds and Kia Ora Stud. Bayliss has been closely involved in the colt’s development, riding him in jump-outs and trials, and said his professionalism stood out from the outset. “He handled himself so well on debut – he paraded relaxed and did everything right,” Bayliss said. “I thought he’d improve off that and you could see a better horse again second-up.” Extremely Tempted showed sharp early speed at Hawkesbury and is again expected to take up a prominent position, although Bayliss noted his versatility if pressure emerges. “He’s very quick and I’d be surprised if he’s not leading, but he’s adaptable if something wants to go faster,” he said.

Well-bred juveniles impress in Warwick Farm trials

A trio of unraced juveniles made a strong impression in Thursday morning’s Warwick Farm trials, headlined by well-related youngsters by Home Affairs (I Am Invincible) and Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice). The Chris Waller-trained Home Affairs filly Coral showed sharp improvement at her second outing, leading throughout under James McDonald to score narrowly. A homebred for Geoff and Mary Grimish, Coral is a half-sister to Group 3 placegetter Overlord (Sebring) out of dual Group 1 winner Red Tracer (Dane Shadow), placing her among the more blue-blooded fillies to trial this week. She held off Stay Inside (Extreme Choice) colt Secret Emperor, with Zoustar (Northern Meteor) filly Sumeria an eye-catching third. At the same session, the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-prepared Snitzel colt War Banner produced his best effort to date at his third trial, edging out stablemate Visionary (So You Think). A homebred for Go Bloodstock, War Banner boasts a strong pedigree as a three-quarter brother to Group-winning juvenile Red Resistance (Russian Revolution) out of Group 2 winner Heatherly (Lonhro). The morning’s other juvenile heat went to King’s Legacy (Redoute's Choice) filly Regal.

Chatelle Rose earns black-type shot in Cambridge Breeders’

Chatelle Rose (Credit: Race Images)

Consistent filly Chatelle Rose (U S Navy Flag) will take her first step into stakes company when she lines up in the Cambridge Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Te Rapa on Saturday. Prepared by Fred Cornege and Lindsay Cornege, the three-year-old has built a tidy record, winning twice and placing three times from eight starts, including a determined victory over 1200 metres at the same track last week. That success came under testing circumstances, with the meeting rescheduled due to Cyclone Vaianu, leaving the filly to back up within eight days. “It’s not ideal, I would have preferred a fortnight between runs, but she’s come through it well,” Cornege said. “She had to do work from a wide draw last time and was entitled to be beaten, so it was a good effort.” Chatelle Rose will jump from barrier four with apprentice Tayla Mitchell aboard, and is expected to press forward again. “She’s a go-forward horse and the draw suits,” Cornege said. Connections will assess her post-race before locking in future targets, although a potential outing at Ellerslie is under consideration prior to a spell.

Latta eyes multi-track stakes success with busy weekend team

Trainer Lisa Latta will juggle a busy stakes schedule across three venues this weekend, led by veteran He’s A Doozy (Zacinto) in Friday’s ANZAC Mile (Listed, 1600m) at Otaki. The eight-year-old comes off a deserved win in the Awapuni Gold Cup (Gr 2, 2100m) and will head to the paddock after Friday’s run, although heavy track conditions remain a concern. “There’s a bit of concern about the track, but he has trained on well,” Latta said. Attention then turns to Te Rapa on Saturday, where in-form gelding Platinum Pantheon (Hanseatic) will chase black type in the Cambridge Breeders’ Stakes. The son of Hanseatic (Street Boss) has won three of his past five starts but faces a challenge from a wide barrier. “He’s in great order, but we’ll need luck from that draw,” Latta said. Further south, Latta will be represented at Riccarton by The Explosive (King Of Comedy) in the Warstep Stakes (Listed, 2000m), with improved track conditions expected to suit the filly, while Platinum Goddess (Alpine Eagle) is set to cross the Cook Strait for a tilt at the ANZAC Day Lest We Forget (2600m).

Iron Hawk targets stakes breakthrough in Great Easter

In-form gelding Iron Hawk (Written Tycoon) will chase a third consecutive win when he steps up to stakes level in the Great Easter Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at Riccarton on Saturday. Prepared by Lance Robinson, the four-year-old has thrived since crossing from Australia, where he showed ability in 11 starts, including a Group 3 placing. Purchased for A$70,000 via Inglis Digital, he has hit form in New Zealand with a runner-up effort on debut before posting back-to-back wins at Riccarton. Robinson said the ANZAC Day feature had long been the target, although a wide draw presents a challenge. “We are really happy with him, his work has been great,” he said. “Everything is spot on apart from the draw, but he’s improving with each run and we’re confident he can measure up.” Saturday’s assignment will be Iron Hawk’s final run of the campaign before a spell, with connections using the performance as a guide towards spring targets during New Zealand Cup Week. In a nod to the occasion, Iron Hawk will race in ANZAC Day colours, with a donation pledged to the RSA should he be successful. Robinson is also hopeful stablemate Bella Luce (Belardo) can gain a start ahead of a tilt at the Easter Cup (Listed, 1600m) next week, while Avoriaz (Almanzor) will contest the staying feature earlier on the card.

HK: Ka Ying Rising won’t chase track record in Chairman’s Sprint

Ka Ying Rising (Credit: HKJC)

Champion jockey Zac Purton says superstar sprinter Ka Ying Rising (Shamexpress) is still improving but won’t be chasing another track record in Sunday’s Chairman’s Sprint Prize (Gr 1, 1200m) at Sha Tin. The David Hayes-trained gelding heads into the HK$24 million feature chasing a 20th consecutive victory and a second unbeaten season, having last start lowered his own 1200-metre track record with a scintillating 1:07.12 in the Sprint Cup (Gr 2, 1200m). Purton described that effort as a career peak, highlighting the horse’s remarkable consistency and recovery. “He pulls up like he’s been out for a canter and recovers very quickly. His aerobic capacity is what sets him apart,” Purton said. Despite receiving regular messages urging him to break the elusive 1:06 barrier, Purton indicated the priority will be winning without overextending the gelding. “I’d like him to win without going right to the bottom of the barrel so he can have a nice break,” he said. “If it happens, it happens – I’ll let him do his thing.” Trainer David Hayes said barrier three in a compact field offers tactical flexibility, with Ka Ying Rising capable of leading or taking a sit depending on tempo. Hayes added that while sprinting remains the focus, the gelding’s stamina could eventually see him stretch beyond 1400 metres, with a mile not ruled out in future campaigns.

HK: Shum warns of toughest QEII Cup challenge in two decades

Romantic Warrior (Acclamation) will bid for a historic fourth success in the QEII Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) at Sha Tin on Sunday, but trainer Danny Shum believes he will need to overcome the strongest field assembled for the race in two decades. The world’s highest-earning racehorse has dominated the feature since 2022 and enters off another faultless campaign, including victories in the Hong Kong Cup (Gr 1, 2000m), Stewards’ Cup (Gr 1, 1600m) and Hong Kong Gold Cup (Gr 1, 2000m). Shum said the depth of opposition, led by international Group 1 winners including Masquerade Ball (Duramente), presents a significant challenge. “I think this is the strongest QEII Cup in 15 or 20 years,” he said. “It’s definitely going to be a difficult race for him.” Romantic Warrior has reportedly trained on strongly since his return, with Shum taking confidence from his recent work and feedback from jockey James McDonald. “He galloped really well. I have confidence going into the race,” Shum said. Tenno Sho (Gr 1, 2000m) winner Masquerade Ball was last seen finishing a head second to 2025 World’s Best Racehorse Calandagan (Gleneagles) in the Japan Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) last November. Tactically versatile, Romantic Warrior is expected to be given a straightforward ride as he attempts to extend his remarkable Group 1-winning record to 14.

HK: Jantar Mantar draws sweetly for Champions Mile

Japanese star Jantar Mantar (Palace Malice) has received a key boost ahead of Sunday’s Champions Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) after drawing ideally in barrier six for the HK$24 million (approx. AU$4.28 million) feature. The four-time Group 1 winner, trained by Tomokazu Takano, will bid to become just the third internationally-trained winner of the race. Assistant trainer Takashi Matsui said the draw provides tactical flexibility. “It’s a very good draw – not too inside, not too wide,” Matsui said. “He can jump well and watch the other horses during the run.” Jantar Mantar boasts an outstanding mile record in Japan, with elite-level victories in the Futurity Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m), NHK Mile Cup (Gr 1, 1600m), Yasuda Kinen (Gr 1, 1600m) and Mile Championship (Gr 1, 1600m). He returns to Sha Tin after finishing 13th in the 2024 Hong Kong Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) and has reportedly settled in well following a delayed flight. “He’s been training very well here and I have no concerns,” Matsui said. “The field is very competitive, but if he shows his true ability, he will be right in it.” Local hopes include 2024 winner Voyage Bubble (Deep Field) and Lucky Sweynesse (Sweynesse).

FR: Ghaiyyath’s Mandanaba makes winning return

Ghaiyyath (Dubawi) filly Mandanaba (4 f Ghaiyyath - Mandesha by Desert Style) captured her second stakes victory when she made a winning return in the Prix Maurice Zilber (Listed, 1400m) at Longchamp on Thursday. The Francis Graffard-trained four-year-old, who placed third in last year’s Poule d'Essai des Pouliches (Gr 1, 1600m), comfortably held the challenge of Godspeed (Hello Youmzain) to score by a short-neck under Mickael Barzalona. Breckenbrough (Kingman) finished another two lengths behind in third. Graffard has identified the Duke Of Cambridge Stakes (Gr 2, 1m) at Royal Ascot as a primary target for the Aga Khan filly.

UK: Mehmas colt tops Doncaster Breeze-Up Sale at £880,000

A colt by Mehmas (Acclamation) set fireworks alight at the second and final session of the Goffs Doncaster Breeze-Up Sale on Wednesday when selling for £880,000 (approx. AU$1.66 million). Becoming the second highest-priced lot to be sold at the sale behind unbeaten Mehmas colt Rapid Force, who sold for £1 million last year, the juvenile was purchased by Anthony Stroud of Stroud Coleman Bloodstock out of Tally-Ho Stud. The top lot is a half-brother to Listed winner Hastalavistababy (Dandy Man) out of Exceed And Excel (Danehill) mare Mia Davina. “He did a very good breeze, he has a good pedigree and he looks like a Royal Ascot two-year-old,” Stroud told the Racing Post. “We’re all trying to buy them to run at Ascot and he fits that brief. Tally-Ho do a fantastic job. He just had the make and shape of what we’re looking for in a breezer. Obviously it’s a great deal of money, a lot more than one would’ve liked to have spent, but that’s the competition of the sales ring. Everyone wants to win so you have to stretch. I don’t know who’ll train him yet, we just need to come up for some air and I’ll be told where he goes later." The sale saw a clearance rate of 84 per cent, with 147 of the 175 two-year-olds offered selling. Turnover dropped 29 per cent from last year to £8,389,250 (approx. AU$15.83 million), the average price fell by 32 per cent to £57,070 (approx. AU$107,720), with the median coming in five per cent lower than 2025 at £35,000 (approx. AU$66,060).

US: Curlin take off Hill ‘N’ Dale roster due to fertility issue

Hill 'N' Dale farms stalwart Curlin (Smart Strike) has been taken off the roster for 2026 after suffering from a low fertility issue. The farm's president John Sikura revealed that the 22-year-old stallion had been evaluated by a specialist from Texas A\&M University's Department of Large Animal Clinical Services. "We had a large enough sample size of mares not checked in foal and then confirmed the issue with expert opinion," Sikura told BloodHorse. "He’s going to have to regenerate semen and it's a lengthy cycle, so we made the hard decision to take him off service and notified the shareholders and the breeders, so they can regroup." Sikura also revealed that Curlin had already been diagnosed with an ulcer by Dr Nathan Slovis from the Hagyard Equine Medical Institute in Lexington. "The ulcer was outside his stomach, which Dr. Slovis said is highly unusual,” Sikura said. “And his fever reached 102 degrees but immediately came down with [treatment of] Banamin. Maybe from the stress and a combination of factors it affected his [semen] sample. Hopefully everything will regenerate in his next cycle and through the fall, and we can breed him next year. We will be careful on numbers and do what's best for the customers and the horse. Right now, I don't want to look too far ahead of today." Curlin, who is the sire of Grade 1 winners Journalism and Cody’s Wish among many others, had been standing for a fee of US$225,000 (approx. AU$314,940) this year.

Magic Millions has assembled a world-class catalogue featuring seven Group 1 winners and 111 black type performers for its 2026 National Broodmare Sale at the Gold Coast on Tuesday, May 26 and Wednesday, May 27.

Day one of the sale will feature race fillies and maiden mares including 56 stakes horses headlined by Group 1 winners Captured By Love (Written Tycoon), Legarto (Proisir), Quintessa (Shamus Award) and Vibrant Sun (The Autumn Sun) as well as other top liners including O' Ole (Ole Kirk), Stretan Ruler (Wild Ruler), Memo (Capitalist), Storyville (Overshare), Super Smink (Super One), Sassy Boom (Spirit Of Boom), Snitzanova (Snitzel), Military Tycoon (Written Tycoon), Aviatress (Smart Missile), Lilac (Justify), My Lips Are Sealed (Ace High), Real Class (Vadamos), Icarian Dream (Blue Point) and Roll On High (Shamus Award).

The broodmare section on day two features another 55 black type performers as well as proven Group producers and relations to present day stars and members of some of the world's most influential families.

Among the mares catalogued on day two are in-foal Group winners such as Abbey Marie (Redoute’s Choice), Royal Merchant (Merchant Navy), Startantes (Star Turn), Amelita (Zousain), Bonvicini (Myboycharlie), Fashion Shoot (Savabeel), Impendabelle (Impending), Jennifer Lynette (Elusive Quality), Limestone (Helmet), Love You Lucy (Love Conquers All), Moonlight Maid (Puissance De Lune), Pedrena (Mossman), Seonee (Winning Rupert), Thalassophile (Not A Single Doubt), Turbo Miss (Sebring) and Vagrant (Pariah).

Three mares believed in foal to world class strike-rate sire Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt) will be well sought out as well as others covered by the likes of Anamoe (Street Boss), City Of Troy (Justify), Home Affairs (I Am Invincible), I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit), Ole Kirk (Written Tycoon), Stay Inside (Extreme Choice), The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice), Too Darn Hot (Dubawi) and Zoustar (Northern Meteor).

"The quality in this year's National Broodmare Sale is incredible," Magic Millions managing director Barry Bowditch said.

"On day one 40 per cent of catalogued lots are stakes winners or stakes placed - buyers are in for a treat.

"As well as so many stars coming straight off the track or destined for more big race success, there's a cracking line up of broodmares with appealing pregnancies.

"It's the most important breeding stock sale in the southern hemisphere and has been the sale that started the stories of racetrack superstars including Winx, Golden Sixty, Aeliana, Autumn Glow, Sunshine In Paris, Pierro, Zoustar, Stay Inside, Imperatriz and Nature Strip."

New Zealand mare Legarto is one of three Group 1 winners entered from across the Tasman and she is coming off victories at weight-for-age in the Herbie Dyke Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at Te Rapa and Bonecrusher Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at Ellerslie.

Legarto will be offered by Attunga Stud (as agent). She was voted Champion NZ 3YO Filly in 2022-23 and Champion NZ Middle Distance Horse in 2023-24. Her 3YO title came after a one-off foray to Australia when Michael Dee booted her home to become the first New Zealand winner of the Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) at Flemington.

The Bonecrusher was her swansong in New Zealand and she stormed home to farewell the home crowd and trainers Ken and Bev Kelso.

“I’m very proud of this mare as she is one out of the box and a horse you only get once in a lifetime,” Ken Kelso said.

“Bev and I have been very fortunate to have had her and it’s quite emotional as it’s probably the last time we will see her racing in New Zealand.

“I thought she was a fair way from them and had a bit of work to do at one point for Opie [Bosson]. But with her turn of foot, I didn’t have any real concerns during the race.

"We weren't going to retire until we got a Group 1 in Australia. We've only ever bought Group 1 horses over here and we've run about three seconds. It's massive. I just can't believe it."

Legarto was bred and sold by Warwick Jeffries through Highline Thoroughbreds as a yearling and was purchased by part-owner Phillip Brown under his Ancroft Stud banner for NZ$90,000 at Book 2 of Karaka in 2021.

She is a daughter of champion NZ stallion Proisir (Choisir) from Trentham winner Geordie Girl (Towkay). Second dam Racing Waters (Racing Is Fun) also foaled Rapid Kay (Towkay) and Kekova (Elusive City), who were Listed winners at Taranaki and Riccarton.

To view the catalogue for the National Broodmare Sale click here or download on your iPad via the Equineline Catalog App.

Supplementary entries for the National Weanling and Broodmare Sales are now open and the catalogue for the National Yearling Sale will be released online next week.

Alexis Badel posts 300th Hong Kong victory as Ethan Brown slots first win at Happy Valley

Preparing to embark on a David and Goliath challenge aboard Beauty Waves (Starspangledbanner) against Ka Ying Rising (Shamexpress) in the Chairman’s Sprint Prize (Gr 1, 1200m) at Sha Tin on Sunday, Alexis Badel slotted a double to claim his 300th Hong Kong win at Happy Valley on Wednesday night.

The Frenchman closed the meeting in style with a running double aboard Me Tsui’s The Auspicious (Almanzor) and the Jamie Richards-trained Jubilant Winner (Capitalist) to reach the milestone.

Vigor Eye (Credit: HKJC)

“It’s great. Eva, my wife, told me I was close to 300 [wins] but I didn’t realise how close I actually was, so I didn’t come to the races thinking I would achieve it tonight and I am very pleased that I had a double and, coming back from suspension, it’s always good to ride winners and I’m very happy,” Badel said.

Badel will chase his third Chairman’s Sprint Prize success after triumphing in the race on Wellington (All Too Hard) in 2021 and 2022, but he is fully aware of the magnitude of the challenge he faces in attempting to defeat Ka Ying Rising.

“Beauty Waves is a very nice horse, he’s got quality and he’s fighting against the top horses right now,” Badel said. “He ran a good race the other day and I am looking for another good run from him.”

The Auspicious continued an excellent season by claiming his fourth win for the campaign with victory in the Class 3 Oncidium Handicap (1800m). With only three runners behind him on the home turn, the Almanzor (Wootton Bassett) gelding powered down the centre of the track to slot his fifth career win.

Registering his fourth win of the season, Jubilant Winner gave Richards a double with all-the-way success in the Class 3 Roselle Handicap (1200m).

Ethan Brown made a flying start to his short-term Hong Kong stint when Shooting To Top (Shooting To Win) claimed the Class 4 Geranium Handicap (1650m) for Cody Mo, providing the Australian jockey breakthrough success at only his third ride in the city.

“I’m over the moon,” Brown said. “Everything worked out really well. I was presented with a good horse, we found a good position and he was too strong in the finish.

“It was great, it's obviously something we all strive to do – to get the opportunity is one thing, but to get a winner straight away is another thing.

“It's a very quick and tight track, you have to be on your ‘A’ game, but I'm picking it up as I go and it was certainly a track I wanted to conquer. The atmosphere is great - it's a good atmosphere and good feeling. Hopefully we'll make plenty more.

“The horse felt great, Cody had him nice and fit and he bounced well from the gates. We were able to get a good trailing position and had a very smooth run - Cody had him in perfect order and I was the benefactor.

“I just wanted to get a winner early and we've been able to tick that box. It gets the monkey off my back and I'm looking forward to what lies ahead. I feel relieved and just feel happy that I'm able to get a winner early - as it's not easy to do.”

Fresh from a four-timer at Sha Tin on Sunday, 13-time champion trainer John Size continued his charge up the 2025/26 standings when Nebraskan (Snitzel) scored under Andrea Atzeni in the Class 5 Flamingo Flower Handicap (1200m).

A dual winner in Australia, Nebraskan notched his first victory in Hong Kong to provide Size with his 41st win of the campaign to trail Caspar Fownes (49), Mark Newnham (48), Danny Shum (47), David Hayes (45) and Francis Lui (42).

Hayes and Zac Purton combined with Vigor Eye (Time Test) to clinch the Class 4 Lavender Handicap (1200m).

“He's [Vigor Eye] a consistent horse. I thought he might have won a bit easier, but he got the job done. If you look at him, he's had six starts and has been in the money five times, so I think he's a consistent horse who will win again in this class,” Hayes said.

Purton sealed a double when the Richards-trained Thunder Prince (I Am Invincible) claimed the Class 4 Lusitano Challenge Cup Handicap (1200m).

Jerry Chau extended his lead in the race for the Tony Cruz Award for the leading homegrown jockey with victory in the Class 5 Freesia Handicap (1650m) aboard David Eustace’s Podium (Medaglia D’Oro). Chau has 35 wins for the campaign, seven clear of nearest pursuer in the Tony Cruz Award standings, Vincent Ho (28).

Ellis Wong piloted King Profit (Stratosphere) to victory from gate 12 in the Class 4 Heather Handicap (1000m) to provide Shum with timely momentum ahead of Romantic Warrior’s (Acclamation) tilt at the QEII Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) at Sha Tin on Sunday.

Casa Of Honor (Mikki Isle) broke through for his first Hong Kong victory for Michael Chang under a well-timed drive from Matthew Poon to land the Class 3 Kalanchoe Handicap (1000m). Formerly known as Perennial when trained in Australia by Paul Messara and Leah Gavranich, the gelding won five races pre-export.

Hong Kong racing continues at Sha Tin on Sunday with FWD Champions Day featuring the Chairman’s Sprint Prize, Champions Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) and QEII Cup.

Maiden Of The Week

Marsept (AUS)

Stakes-placed filly Marsept (Written Tycoon) broke her maiden at the fifth time of asking on Wednesday when running out an easy winner of an 1125-metre maiden as the long odds-on favourite.

Sent off a $1.30 shot having been Listed-placed as a juvenile and runner-up on her latest start over 1200 metres at Caulfield, the Team Hawkes-trained daughter of Written Tycoon (Iglesia) cruised to a 3.3 lengths success over Varadero (Star Witness).

“She’s a Saturday class filly, not a maidener, but it’s always good to get the maiden out of the way,” Wayne Hawkes, who trains in partnership with his brothers Michael and John, told Racing.com.

“Nothing really went wrong [last prep], she just didn’t seem to come up. This time she’s just been going gangbusters.

“Caulfield the other day, you’ve got a maiden trying to take on the more experienced horses, and it took a smart one to actually beat her.

“That’s how you want $1.30 pops to win… it was trackwork, to be honest.”

Winning rider Jye McNeil, who had ridden the filly to both her Listed placing and last-start runner-up finish, was also impressed with the effort.

“I always thought she’d be very hard to beat, obviously, but she was very impressive today,” he said.

“She was absolutely going absolutely airborne before Caulfield, and she’s probably improved since then. She absolutely toyed with them today.

“You don’t see horses win like that very often now and she was completely dominant.”

Bred by Yulong, Marsept was purchased by Vinery Stud for $300,000 at the 2024 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale and is the only winner from three to race out of the Listed-placed Sebring (More Than Ready) mare Motown Lil.
