Having acquired the Hunter Valley’s Segenhoe Stud, Yulong have revealed that their two new stallion prospects, Devil Night (Extreme Choice) and Private Harry (Harry Angel), will stand on its inaugural New South Wales roster at the culmination of their racing careers this season – with the fees for both yet to be announced.

A $1.4 million Magic Millions Gold Coast yearling, Devil Night is by the outstanding subfertile sire Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt) and secured his future at stud with a rousing success in the 2025 Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m), becoming the first two-year-old since his great grandsire Redoute’s Choice (Danehill) to win the Blue Diamond at only their second start.

What's On

He returned at three to place at Group level on three further occasions, including a third placing in the William Reid Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) – showcasing his ability at weight-for-age level. His most recent start saw him run second behind The Everest (Gr 1, 1200m) runner-up and Surround Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) victor Tempted (Street Boss) in the Arrowfield 3YO Sprint (Gr 2, 1200m).

“Brilliance, precocity, quality and temperament, all words I’d use to describe Devil Night,” John Hawkes, who trains Devil Night in partnership with his sons Michael and Wayne, said.

“We’ve enjoyed training him, he’s so genuine and honest. Our job has been made easy when they are natural like this bloke. I really think he’ll make a very good stallion.”

Meanwhile, fellow newcomer Private Harry also heads to the barn with a Group 1 success, having landed the 2025 The Galaxy (Gr 1, 1100m) in the fastest time recorded this century, just 0.16 seconds short of the Rosehill track record.

Also a winner of the $3 million Magic Millions Sunlight (1100m), defeating Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Lady Of Camelot (Written Tycoon), the son of Harry Angel (Dark Angel) was unbeaten at three and is the first son of his sire to retire to stud.

“These are two exceptional colts who bring different but equally valuable profiles to our roster,” Yulong’s chief operating officer, Sam Fairgray, said.

“Devil Night is a Group 1-winning two-year-old who trained on to beat elite sprinters at weight-for-age, while Private Harry offers consistency at a high level, and some of the fastest sectionals we’ve seen in recent years.

“The profile and commercial appeal of these two colts could further enhance in the coming weeks, with both looking to build on their records in Group 1’s later this Autumn.

“Both are outstanding physical types with great minds, and they represent exactly what the market is demanding - speed, precocity, and the ability to perform at the highest level.”

Headlining Yulong’s inaugural NSW roster will be Alabama Express (Redoute’s Choice), who will stand at an unchanged fee of $66,000 (all fees inc GST).

The son of champion sire Redoute’s Choice will be returning to the place of his upbringing, having been born and raised at Segenhoe’s neighbouring Arrowfield Stud.

Alabama Express’ rise through the ranks continued this season, with his star first-crop daughter Treasurethe Moment adding a fourth elite-level win in the Memsie Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m), while three-year-old McWoody claimed the Port Adelaide Guineas (Listed, 1800m), and juvenile colt Alibaba marked himself as one for the future with a win in the Blue Diamond Preview (C&G) (Listed, 1000m) and third placing in the Inglis Millennium (RL, 1100m).

Meanwhile, his progeny sold for up to NZ$850,000 at Karaka and averaged over $500,000 at Inglis Easter.

Alabama Express will be joined in the Hunter Valley by proven Group sires Tagaloa (Lord Kanaloa), who will stand unchanged at $22,000, and Lucky Vega (Lope De Vega), who sees his fee reduced to $27,500 from last year’s $38,500.

Tagaloa’s progeny hit the ground running this season, with the Blue Diamond winner producing Group-winning first-crop fillies Salty Pearl and Spicy Lu, plus Group performances from four further first-crop runners and stakes placings from two-year-olds Vahvay and Miss Chanel – the latter second at Group 1 level.

Group 1-winning shuttler Lucky Vega, who was crowned Champion Victorian First Season Sire in 2025 following the exploits of his daughter Within The Law, has continued his strong start at stud. Three-year-old colt That’s Gold claimed two Group wins while juvenile filly Cherry Bomshell took out the Percy Sykes (Gr 2, 1200m) on the final day of the Sydney Autumn Carnival.

Yulong’s Nagambie base in Victoria will see stud stalwart Written Tycoon (Iglesia) remain private for the 2026 season, covering a small and select group of Yulong mares only.

Everything is on his terms now, and the team are very attuned to that, he’s a firm favourite on the stallion unit and they do a great job keeping him a happy healthy horse

Sam Fairgray

Rising 24, the nine-time Victorian Champion Sire and former Australian Champion Sire has produced star Kiwi filly Well Written from his latest crop of three-year-olds, alongside Group-winning colts Grand Prairie and Tycoon Star. Among his two-year-olds to run in 2026 are the progeny of Away Game (Snitzel), the late Hungry Heart (Frankel) and a full-sibling to Tycoon Star - who sold for $1.3 million at Inglis Easter Sale.

“He’s in great shape considering his age, he still gallops across his paddock every morning with a smile on his face,” Sam Fairgray said of Written Tycoon.

“Everything is on his terms now, and the team are very attuned to that, he’s a firm favourite on the stallion unit and they do a great job keeping him a happy healthy horse.”

Alabama Express (Credit: Yulong)

Also remaining alongside Written Tycoon will be Pierata (Pierro), who heads the 2026 Victorian roster at a reduced fee of $33,000.

Since his arrival to Yulong in 2023, Pierata has covered the cream of Australasia’s race mares with two-year-olds out of Belle En Rouge (Burgundy), Unforgotten (Fastnet Rock), Greysful Glamour (Stratum) and Catch Me (I Am Invincible) all expected to make their debuts this spring, and his progeny continue to prove a popular commodity at auction, being knocked down for up to $450,000.

Another new addition in Vinrock (I Am Invincible) adds elite juvenile form to the roster, as the first horse in 44 years to claim both the VRC Sires’ (Gr 2, 1400m) and ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m).

Breeders have already poured into the recently announced son of I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit), who will be standing at an introductory fee of $22,000 this season.

Foundation sire Grunt (O’Reilly) continues to hold his own, as a reliable source of winners, providing George Ryder Stakes (Grunt) winner Veight from his first crop, Tulloch Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m) victor Pocketing from his second, and VRC Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m) heroine Strictly Business from his third. He drops slightly to $16,500 this season, from $19,800 last year.

Japanese import Diatonic (Lord Kanaloa) will be available at an unchanged fee of $13,750. His first yearlings sold up to a staggering $650,000, and averaged over seven-times their conception fee.

Written Tycoon (Credit: Yulong)

Dual international Group 1 scorer Panthalassa (Lord Kanaloa) returns to Yulong for his third season at an unchanged fee of $16,500.

The son of champion sire Lord Kanaloa (King Kamehameha) attracted plenty of admirers at the Yulong stallion parade last season and Sam Fairgray was equally complimentary on his first crop.

“One thing that stands out is the movement of the Panthalassas. They are very athletic horses, well balanced and with quality,” Fairgray said.

“Interestingly, when you look at the mares they are out of, he has dominated and stamped his progeny, all bay/brown with nice heads like their sire. They have good frames too and if they continue to develop into themselves, we will have a lovely group of yearlings by him to sell in 2027.”

Rounding out the Victorian roster are Group winners Growing Empire (Zoustar) and First Settler (Written Tycoon), both expecting their first foals in 2026 after strong support in their debut seasons.

Group 1 performer Growing Empire proved a popular addition in 2025, as Victoria’s most popular first season sire, covering 182 mares, and remains at $22,000.

Meanwhile Group 2 scorer First Settler also attracted a solid book of 142 and also sees his fee unchanged at $11,000.

Yulong expands into Hunter Valley with the purchase of legendary Segenhoe Stud

Segenhoe Stud

Yulong has announced the acquisition of Segenhoe Stud, marking a significant milestone in the company’s expansion into Australia’s premier thoroughbred breeding region, the Hunter Valley.

This acquisition underlines Yulong’s long‑term commitment to the Australian bloodstock industry, joining their already fully established Victorian farm.

Spanning 1,400 acres, Segenhoe Stud is widely regarded as one of the jewels of the Hunter Valley. The Segenhoe brand has amassed an excellent record of success since its inception in 1908, producing high-profile Group 1 winners such as Pride Of Jenni (Pride Of Dubai) and Joliestar (Zoustar), alongside a large rollcall of stakes performers over the past decade.

Its enduring reputation is built not only on results at the highest level both on the track and at auction, but also on more than a century of careful stewardship and breeding excellence.

Set across fertile river flats complemented by undulating hills, Segenhoe’s pastures create an ideal natural environment for the growth and development of the thoroughbred. Every aspect of the farm has been thoughtfully designed and refined over time to support horses at all stages of their lifecycle, from foaling through to racetrack performance and beyond into their breeding careers.

Kevin Maloney, chairman of Segenhoe Stud, said he was proud of the 18 Group 1 winners bred at the property over the past 15 years of ownership.

“Segenhoe has been run as a family enterprise and the family is pleased to welcome Yulong as the new owners, particularly given the professional approach it has demonstrated with its other racing interests,” Maloney said.

The farm will become Yulong’s first New South Wales‑based stallion operation, strengthening the company’s footprint in Australia and providing breeders with additional access to Yulong’s ever-growing roster.

“Natural progression and expansion of our colt purchases, both as yearlings and racehorses, has led to us now focusing on developing a stallion facility in New South Wales” said Yulong’s chief operating officer, Sam Fairgray.

“We have a beautiful property and facilities in Victoria, along with some regally bred bloodstock, and this operation will continue to remain a strong focus for us. Our stallion barn however filled very quickly so to expand the operation to both states was the next logical step in Yulong’s development.”

A comprehensive redevelopment of existing infrastructure at Segenhoe is planned which will include the construction of a new stallion barn and purpose‑built serving facilities capable of accommodating up to ten stallions.

Yulong’s general manager, Jun Zhang, said: “This is not simply an expansion of our footprint, but a reflection of our confidence in the future of the Australian thoroughbred industry.

“We believe Segenhoe provides an outstanding foundation to build a world-class stallion operation in New South Wales, and we are committed to investing in its people, its horses and its long-term success.”

Since Yulong’s inauguration, every Victorian stallion with runners has produced stakes winners and Group 1 level performers from their first crop, a trend Fairgray says the operation aims to continue on new pastures.

“We plan to continue this trend with our new sires,” Fairgray added.

“Standing stallions that we believe will work with the Australian broodmare population is what we set out to achieve and we welcome breeders to call and discuss mating plans with any of our team.”

Kia Ora join forces with Vinery Stud for 2026 stallion roster

A Hunter Valley power play has been executed with news Kia Ora Stud’s stallions Farnan (Not A Single Doubt), Captivant (Capitalist) and exciting newcomer Tropicus (Too Darn Hot) will stand at Vinery Stud from this spring.

The two neighbouring and deeply entwined farms announced the move on Wednesday, which means Vinery will stand a nine-stallion roster from 2026, with fees for this spring to be released on Friday.

Almost three years in the making, the agreement brings together the two leading first season sires by key markers in Australia last season onto the same farm. Ole Kirk (Written Tycoon) - who topped that table by earnings and stakes winners - will be joined at Vinery by Farnan, who headed the list by winners and was second by black type victors.

Farnan and Ole Kirk, both eight-year-olds looming up behind Australia’s ageing band of dominant stallions, are now sitting first and second respectively by winners on the Australian second season sires’ table.

As of this spring, Farnan, Captivant and Tropicus will stand alongside Vinery’s incumbent six stallions Ole Kirk, All Too Hard (Casino Prince), Exceedance (Exceed And Excel), Hawaii Five Oh (I Am Invincible), Headwater (Exceed And Excel) and Star Turn (Star Witness).

The two studs’ decision to combine rosters comes three years after the decision by Kia Ora owner, the late Ananda Krishnan, to buy a substantial stake in Vinery.

Vinery general manager Adam White said the move would greatly enhance and streamline the two farms’ stallion operations and “made logical sense”, given both operations had almost the same ownership.

“It’s great,” he told ANZ News. “Since Mr Krishnan, through Kia Ora, took a big stake in Vinery three years ago, it’s something that’s been discussed from time to time, without anything being finalised.

“So to finally be consolidating the stallion rosters into the one farm, it’s an exciting time.

“It strengthens the stallion roster. Having two farms owned by partly the same entity standing stallions next to each other actually diluted both rosters a bit.

“By joining forces we’re able to compete with some of those farms who’ve got bigger rosters.

“Plus Kia Ora have such an elite broodmare band, and always have had for the last 26 odd years since Mr Krishnan bought the farm. They’ll support our stallions like they always have, so it’s onwards and upwards.

“Both farms are moving forward to make the most of the strength we’ve got under this roster now, and hopefully both farms can capitalise on it.”

Farnan (Credit: Kia Ora Stud)

In a statement, White added: “To think the two leading second season sires by individual winners, Farnan and Ole Kirk, are now on the one roster is very exciting for both operations.

“The early success of Farnan, as well as breeding a prospect like Tropicus, is a testament to the quality and professionalism of the Kia Ora team. We are really looking forward to continuing to work closely with them to maximise the success of both farms and the stallion roster.”

Kia Ora’s bloodstock and breeding manager Shane Wright said the move was “very exciting”.

“Kia Ora and Vinery, two very established farms with a huge history behind them joining forces like this is only going to strengthen the stallion roster,” Wright told ANZ. “But also thinking about all the resources we can put together is very exciting.

“These stallions are going to get the benefit of some pretty serious broodmare bands - the Kia Ora broodmare band, the Vinery broodmare band, and the shareholders’ broodmare bands. The stallions will get every chance going forward.

“Combining the broodmare bands, combining the resources of facilities and staffing can only strengthen everything for both farms going forward, to work more seamlessly as one.”

While also migrating certain personnel from Kia Ora to Vinery would seem a logical step, White said staffing details were still being determined.

Kia Ora will revert to being a “pretty boutique broodmare farm”, Wright said, as it was before introducing stallions five years ago when Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Farnan began his stud career alongside Prague (Redoute’s Choice).

Captivant (Credit:  Kia Ora Stud)

Vinery and Kia Ora are united in their excitement over Tropicus, the Kia Ora-bred four-year-old who became the highest-rated sprinting son of the gun stallion Too Darn Hot (Dubawi) in winning February’s Oakleigh Plate (Gr 1, 1100m) at Caulfield.

The Anthony and Sam Freedman-trained entire became the only progeny of Too Darn Hot worldwide to achieve a Timeform rating of 120 or higher at 1200 metres or less.

“We’re super excited about him,” Wright said. “To have a stallion entering stud with our brand on him is very significant.

“He’s a super-looking horse. People have started inspecting him, and he’s been going down very, very well. We think he’s going to be a stallion who gets very well supported, and there’s actually some limited share offers still available.

“He’s Too Darn Hot’s highest-rated sprinter as well, so he’s absolutely made for the Australian market.”

White said he was “elated” with how Tropicus presented.

“[He’s] such an attractive horse with a quality head and beautiful bay colour,” he said.

“Being a high-rated Group 1 sprinter, he has the strength that we all look for and having won on debut in town as a two-year-old, I think he will get very early runners.

“You only have to look back to how his sire Too Darn Hot began with his first crop and then add the fact that Tropicus is from a mare by Exceed And Excel, who is a world-renowned sire of juveniles, which just increases his chances to do so.”

Wright said the eight-year-old Farnan, who has five stakes winners from 105 runners, was “continuing to go from strength-to-strength”, including rising to currently sit sixth among Australian three-year-old sires, with Michael Freedman’s dual stakes-winning gelding Ninja his top performer.

After his dynamic start at stud, Farnan would seem likely to be in contention for a fee rise at his new digs, after standing last year for $77,000 (inc GST), up from $55,000. Likewise Vinery’s flagbearer Ole Kirk, who has six stakes winners from 93 starters and stood last year for $99,000 (inc GST), up from $55,000.

“We couldn’t be happier with Farnan,” Wright said. “Everyone at Kia Ora is very proud of him.

“Every year he’s shown he can get top flight horses, and in the years that he’s had runners he’s been at the top of the tables.

“He’s a force to be reckoned with going forward, when you look at his numbers and how the quality of his mares has improved year on year. He’s a stallion we’re very happy to be behind.”

The seven-year-old Captivant, who stood last year for $19,800 (inc GST), is just starting out, with one winner from his first six two-year-old runners.

“He’ll have a slight fee decrease this year, just with the way the market is going,” Wright said. “The best of him is still to come with his late two-year-olds and coming three-year-olds.”

The eight-year-old Prague, who alongside Farnan kicked off Kia Ora’s return to standing stallions after a long hiatus, is heading to Queensland’s Oaklands Stud to stand at $8,800 (inc GST), after covering 32 mares at $11,000 (inc GST) last year.

Anamoe breeding right sells for $450,000 on Day 1 of April (Late) Sale

Anamoe (Credit: Darley)

A breeding right in boom first season sire Anamoe (Street Boss) topped the opening day of the Inglis Digital April (Late) Online Sale, selling to Bangaloe Stud’s Julia Ritchie for $450,000.

While the April (Late) Sale will officially end on Thursday with the inaugural Australian Broodmare Sale Session, Wednesday's results provided a strong start to what is the first ever Inglis Digital auction to close out across multiple days.

The Anamoe breeding right was offered by Aristia Park on behalf of John Guscic, who said: “Selling the Anamoe breeding right through Inglis Digital was a seamless process – their team was incredibly professional, proactive and supportive every step of the way.

“I’m very grateful for their expertise and reach. To the new owner, I wish them the very best of luck.’’

The purchase for Ritchie came 12 months to the day after she was the successful bidder in a Zoustar (Northern Meteor) share in the Inglis Digital April (Late) Sale, but this time it was a breeding right in Anamoe, whose yearlings sold up to $1.1 million in his first crop to the sales this year.

“I’ve been accruing a quality broodmare band over the past few years and as such I’m now accruing a quality bunch of stallion shares and breeding rights that work for my mares,’’ Ritchie said.

“I was bidding away today in the regular increments and then I just had a mic drop moment and put in one bigger bid to try and speed up the process and it worked.

“Anamoe has done such a good job early, he’s producing popular young horses and I’m sure they’ll shine on the track later this year and into the future so I wanted to get in early and be part of the Anamoe journey.’’

In total, Wednesday's opening session of the April (Late) Sale grossed $1,738,050 at an 84 per cent clearance rate. Thursday’s Australian Broodmare Sale Session closes from 10am.

Quality quintet bound for Ascot

A large contingent of Australian owners and trainers will be shopping for top hats and tails after five local horses were entered for Royal Ascot’s sprint features in June. The depth of Australasia’s sprinting ranks will be showcased on the other side of the world after Joliestar (Zoustar), Asfoora (Flying Artie), Lady Of Camelot (Written Tycoon), Generosity (Divine Prophet) and Overpass (Vancouver) were all nominated for the United Kingdom’s most prestigious meeting. Four of the five hold entries for both the King Charles III Stakes (Gr 1, 5f) and the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes (Gr 1, 6f), with Henry Dwyer’s stable star Asfoora only nominated for the King Charles Stakes given the mare’s preference for shorter trips. Asfoora has already tasted Royal Ascot success, winning the 2024 edition of the King Charles under a masterful Oisin Murphy ride before subsequently claiming elite-level wins in the Nunthorpe Stakes (Gr 1, 5f) at York and the Prix de l’Abbaye de Longchamp (Gr 1, 1000m) in France. Lady Of Camelot returns to the races in Saturday’s Victory Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Eagle Farm, with the four-year-old mare set to jump from barrier four in the hands of regular rider Tim Clark. Charm Stone (I Am Invincible) had also been mooted to join the Australian invasion on Ascot, but connections ultimately decided against sending their Group 1 heroine overseas. One Australian rider definitely making the trip is Zac Lloyd after the Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m)-winning jockey was booked for some lightweight rides by local trainer George Boughey.

Lees believes it’s Tavi’s Time to shine

Tavi Time (Credit: Sportpix)

Kris Lees believes Tavi Time (Tavistock) is primed and ready to break the Newcastle trainer’s winless streak in Saturday’s Hawkesbury Gold Cup (Gr 3, 1600m). Lees is set to saddle up his dual Summer Cup (Gr 3, 2000m) winner in Saturday’s $250,000 feature, a race the six-year-old finished fifth in last year when he was unsuited by the heavy track. With dry weather forecast for the remainder of the week, Tavi Time should get conditions to suit this time as he aims to top up an already impressive prize-money haul of $1.1 million under Dylan Gibbons. Also in his favour is a highly encouraging second-up record of three wins and a minor placing from six starts. “Tavi Time has trained on well since his first-up run, and is set to again have a crack at both the Hawkesbury and Scone Cups,” Lees said. “He goes to Hawkesbury in good order, and is proven second-up.” The gelding’s prospects of victory were hampered when he was handed the outside gate in the Hawkesbury Cup, although pre-race favourite Captain Furai (Toronado) – who beat Tavi Time home at Randwick two weeks ago – only fared marginally better when he was assigned barrier 15.

Waller out to strike gold at Hawkesbury

Chris Waller will have another strong hand in the Hawkesbury Gold Cup with the master trainer set to send out five runners on Saturday. All bar enigmatic gelding Waterford (Awtaad) have drawn double-figure gates including pre-race favourite Captain Furai, who was assigned barrier 15. In contrast, Waterford was handed an ideal draw with the seasoned campaigner set to jump from barrier six under Tommy Berry. The seven-year-old, whose last victory came in the Shannon Stakes (Gr 2, 1500m) at Rosehill in September, has been given a month off between runs which was a deliberate ploy, according to Waller’s assistant trainer Charlie Duckworth. “It was literally just a case of waiting for Hawkesbury,” he said. “He’s had four weeks between runs but he had a barrier trial, and he trialled at Hawkesbury. So he’s fit enough and we think he’s more than capable of winning a race like this on his day.” Waller also holds all the aces in the Clarendon Stakes (1400m) with five of the eight runners engaged, including The Roaring Sun (The Autumn Sun) who finished runner-up to subsequent stakes placegetter Seraphox (Harry Angel) on debut at Warwick Farm earlier this month. Duckworth believes the colt has black type potential and hopes Saturday’s contest can act as a launchpad for the Queensland Winter Carnival.

Parker’s pair set to go wild at Wagga

Kerry Parker is adamant his runners in the two feature races held at Wagga this week are both well over the odds. Parker will saddle up topweight Well Timed (Nicconi) in Thursday’s $200,000 Wagga Town Plate (1200m), before stablemate Flying Bandit (Trapeze Artist) attempts to become the first horse for nearly 50 years to successfully defend the Wagga Wagga Gold Cup (Listed, 2000m) on Friday. Both gallopers were handed favourable draws and will jump from gate six in their respective contests, with Andrew Adkins taking the reins on Well Timed and Jay Ford getting the leg-up on the Proven Thoroughbreds-owned Flying Bandit. Odds of more than 200-1 are currently on offer for the pair to seal the Wagga Carnival double, but Parker firmly believes those odds might be made to look generous in the extreme. “It’s a lovely race for Well Timed, he usually races handy and from barrier six I can see him being right on the speed,” Parker said. “Flying Bandit hasn’t run a place since last year and he will need the speed on in the Cup, but I’m hoping the blinkers help him produce his best. I’m sure he was my first Wagga Cup runner last year and he won the race, and I don’t think I’ve had a runner in the Town Plate before so hopefully Well Timed can do the same. He’s had a few wide draws and copped some interference last run, but he was very good when winning at Kembla Grange the start before.”

Injury rules Matias out of the Queensland Derby

Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou’s progressive three-year-old Matias (Snitzel) will not press on to the Queensland Winter Carnival after suffering a leg injury. The stable withdrew the upwardly mobile stayer out of Queensland Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) contention, and Brad Widdup’s topline sprinter Jedibeel (Savabeel) will also be on the sidelines for the foreseeable future with a throat issue that requires surgery. The talented pair will be absent for the remainder of this season after showing very promising signs during Sydney’s autumn carnival. Matias was one of the early favourites for the Queensland Derby after his dominant victory in the Frank Packer Plate (Gr 3, 2000m) at Randwick a fortnight ago, but a minor leg injury he sustained at trackwork over the weekend has forced a premature end to his campaign. “Matias twisted a joint and is going to the paddock,” said Ryan. “We would have been behind the eight-ball trying to get him ready for the Derby, so we have pulled up stumps. He will have a break and hopefully be back for spring. I was devastated when it happened, as the horse was coming along so well for Brisbane.”

VRC goes global with golden ticket

The Victoria Racing Club (VRC) has established a new international initiative in partnership with the Kentucky Derby Festival which will see the winner of this year’s Churchill Distaff Turf Mile Stakes (Gr 2, 8f) offered a golden ticket to the Empire Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m). The announcement connects two of the world’s most well-known racing festivals by creating a direct pathway for some of America’s best fillies and mares to compete at the Melbourne Cup Carnival. The move seeks to enhance the VRC’s international appeal and follows on from Parchment Party’s (Constitution) pioneering visit to Flemington last year, when he became the first American-trained horse to compete in the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m). “The Longines Churchill Distaff Turf Mile is a prestigious race, and providing its winner with a guaranteed start in the TAB Empire Rose creates a strong reason for international competitors to target Flemington during the Melbourne Cup Carnival,” said VRC chief executive officer Kylie Rogers. “By creating this international pathway into the Empire Rose Stakes, we’re inviting the world’s best fillies and mares to take their place alongside some of Australia’s best.” Churchill Downs welcomed the announcement with its president and chief operating officer, Bill Mudd, saying: “We’re thrilled to partner with the Victoria Racing Club on this international initiative. The Kentucky Derby and the Melbourne Cup are two of racing’s greatest events, and we look forward to expanding the partnership of our two iconic institutions.”

New Zealand

Milestone moment for modest Walker

A 1,500th New Zealand win was the exclamation mark on yet another prosperous weekend for Mark Walker, and it was fitting that regally-bred filly Avantaggia (Wootton Bassett) brought up the milestone victory for Te Akau Racing’s head trainer. Te Akau principal David Ellis shelled out a cool $2.1 million to acquire Avantaggia, the first foal out of Avantage (Fastnet Rock) who carried the tangerine silks to nine Group 1 wins before she was sold as a broodmare for $4.1 million. The filly powered to her second consecutive win in Monday’s ANZAC Day Handicap (1200m) at Ellerslie to take Walker’s tally of winners in New Zealand to 1,500. The modest horseman, who now sits on more than 2,200 winners worldwide, was quick to defer praise to the Ellis family as well as his support teams on both sides of the Tasman. “It can’t be achieved without the support of so many great owners over the years, and obviously with Dave [Ellis] buying the best yearlings every year and having Karyn [Fenton-Ellis] syndicating them, it’s certainly not lost on me the quality of horses we get to work with and train at Te Akau,” the 55-year-old said. “We’re very fortunate at Te Akau to have so many great people working for us. [Co-trainer] Sam [Bergerson] and I have a great relationship and when I’m at the stables in Melbourne I know that he and [assistant trainer] Reece [Trumper] are running the ship really well. I think we’ve had 18 wins in the last month in New Zealand, with a Group 1 among four stakes wins, and we’re tracking at a similar rate to when we won the premiership last year. We have just had our second Group 1 this month in Australia, so I’m very happy with that.”

Well-bred juvenile out to add to family honours board

Belle Rebelle (Credit: Race Images)

Promising filly Belle Rebelle (Ribchester) hails from a potent stakes family and will attempt to add further black type honours to her pedigree page at Te Rapa on Saturday. The daughter of Ribchester (Iffraaj) finished runner-up last time out in the Star Way Stakes (Listed, 1200m) and will attempt to go one better for multiple Group 1-winning trainer Donna Logan in the Waikato Equine Veterinary Centre Stakes (Listed, 1400m). She is raced under the Emerald Bloodstock banner of Hawke’s Bay breeders Mike and Diana Creed, a granddaughter of Annie Sarten with the filly a member of her outstanding Belle family. Belle Rebelle is the first foal out of the Haunui Farm-based mare Belle Moi (Exosphere) and was a debut winner at Pukekohe before her second placing at Ellerslie. “She’s a tough girl from the Belle family and I got her through Mark Chitty, which was very, very good of him,” Logan said. “They are incredibly good owners and such wonderful people. She’s been very straight forward, and her and another two-year-old Arcadia have worked together all the way through and I couldn’t separate them, Arcadia was a late scratching the day Belle Rebelle won.”

HK: Cummings prepared to be patient

James Cummings is taking a patient approach as he bids to make his mark in Hong Kong next season. The former Godolphin Australia head trainer will open up his stables in the Asian racing mecca in June, with a view to saddling up his first runners when the new season gets underway in September. A “really interesting challenge” awaits Cummings, who will encounter some familiar faces in Hong Kong’s training ranks with fellow Australians David Hayes and Mark Newnham already well established, and Ciaron Maher’s former partner David Eustace enjoying an encouraging start to his tenure. Cummings felt the time was right to make the move, having parted ways with Godolphin when the racing and breeding juggernaut announced its transition to a public training model. “I just enjoy training horses, so wherever it was going to be I was pretty open minded, but when Hong Kong made the offer last year I flew over and had a bit of a look at the facilities and met a few people,” Cummings told Racing.com. “I was quite impressed with how things were run here, quite impressed with the racing system. The few times I’ve been before, it’s always been in the back of my mind that it’s the sort of place that would be a really interesting challenge and it suited us as a family to do it now rather than another time.” While keen to hit the ground running and make an impression in a new racing jurisdiction, Cummings will take his time in building up his new stable. “September is the beginning of the season so that’ll be the soonest I have runners, but I’ll be in no rush,” he said.

UK: Murphy sets sights on Cox Plate glory

Ahead of his reunion with Asfoora (Flying Artie) in the Palace House Stakes (Gr 3, 5f) at Newmarket on Saturday, Irish jockey Oisin Murphy has spoken of his desire to return to Australia to win the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m). Murphy finished second aboard Benbatl (Dubawi) in Australasia’s weight-for-age championship in 2018, when Winx (Street Cry) created history by winning the Cox Plate for the fourth time. Murphy, who first rode in Victoria as an apprentice jockey, is no stranger to Australian shores but success in one of the major races has thus far eluded him. “If I can get on the right horse, it’d be great to win a Cox Plate,” Murphy told Racing.com. “Obviously, the Melbourne Cup, there’s a huge amount of hype about the race, it’s the most important handicap in the world. European horses have a good record in it, so I’d love to win it but again, it’s about getting on the right one.” In the more immediate future, Murphy is concentrating on the British flat racing season which clicks into gear with the Guineas Festival this weekend. A five-time champion jockey in the United Kingdom, Murphy will be in the thick of the action and expressed excitement as he prepares to partner Asfoora in the Palace House Stakes.

Proisir heads Rich Hill’s quartet of stallions for 2026

Proisir (Credit: Rich Hill Stud)

Rich Hill Stud has announced the 2026 service fees for its four-strong roster of stallions, with Proisir (Choisir) once again leading the way with a service fee of $65,000 (all fees plus GST) – a $5,000 reduction on last year’s figure.

Proisir added to his long list of Group 1 winners this season through Waitak and Legarto, the mighty mare who signed off her stellar career with back-to-back victories at racing’s highest level.

“It has been another exceptional season for our stallions, who continue to deliver outstanding results for breeders both on the racetrack and in the sale ring,” said Rich Hill’s managing director, John Thompson.

“We are proud to present a line-up of proven sires that have achieved success across all our major markets.”

Proisir’s racetrack success was also replicated in the ring, with his colt out of Ruqqaya (Van Nistelrooy) offered by Trelawney Stud at Karaka Book 1 selling for NZ$600,000. That price was subsequently eclipsed by his filly out of Zee Falls (Sacred Falls) at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale, with Yarraman Park fetching $700,000 for her.

Breeders supporting Proisir this year are well positioned for the future, with the well-bred progeny from his most recent crops set to hit the track. He had 52 yearlings catalogued in Karaka Book 1 in 2025 and 54 in 2026, alongside strong representation at both the Magic Millions and Inglis Easter.

“These are significantly upgraded books in terms of pedigree compared to his earlier crops, and we are confident he will continue to build on what is already an outstanding stud record,” Thompson added.

Proisir is ably supported on the roster by shuttler Satono Aladdin (Deep Impact), who returns to the farm in 2026 for an unchanged service fee of $45,000.

The son of Deep Impact (Sunday Silence) has maintained an impressive strike-rate of 12.4 per cent stakes winners to runners among his Australasian progeny.

His yearling sales highlight in New Zealand came at Karaka Book 1, when his filly out of Avisto (Tavistock) offered by Curraghmore sold for NZ$500,000; while in Australia, another filly – this time from Widden Stud’s draft and out of Legramor (Commands) – realised $575,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Satono Aladdin (Credit: Rich Hill Stud)

The highest price he recorded this season was at the 2025 Karaka Ready to Run Sale, when Riversley Park’s colt out of Shezdelicious (Atlante) was knocked down for NZ$675,000.

“We expect Satono Aladdin’s profile to rise significantly over the coming racing seasons,” said Thompson.

“He now has strong numbers of well-bred progeny, placed with many of Australasia’s leading stables.”

Dual Group 1 winner Ace High (High Chaparral) will stand at an unchanged $15,000. He has produced ten individual Australasian stakes performers, including Group 1 winner She’s A Dealer.

Ace High’s progeny have also performed well in the sale ring and was represented by a top price of $380,000 at the 2025 Karaka Ready to Run Sale, where he averaged $171,000.

With more limited representation at the yearling sales, he still achieved a top price of $160,000 at Karaka Book 2 for the filly out of Maenoha (Bachelor Duke), delivering an excellent result for breeder Seaton Park.

“Ace High’s progeny are continuing to show they can perform at the elite level as they mature and step up in distance. We are very excited about his future and expect his upward trajectory to continue,” Thompson said.

The roster is completed by Shocking, a dual Group 1-winning son of Street Cry (Machiavellian) who has had his fee trimmed slightly to $8,000, from $10,000 in 2025.

Shocking continues to produce tough, consistent performers and recent flagbearers El Vencedor and Here To Shock have both competed with distinction at the highest level, while Azazel added further success as a stakes-winning three-year-old in Victoria.

Shocking’s progeny have also delivered strong returns across the yearling, Ready to Run and trial markets over the past season. He was the leading sire by average (three or more sold) at this year’s Karaka Book 2 Yearling Sale, achieving an average of $121,667.

“Shocking is an established sire of high-class racehorses. He offers breeders access to a proven stallion at exceptional value,” Thompson said.
