Doomben 10,000

Grafterburners out to land a blow for the locals

Grafterburners (Credit: Michael McInally)

As the sole Queenslander in the top ten of the betting markets for Saturday’s Doomben 10,000 (Gr 1, 1200m), Grafterburners (Graff) will carry the weight of his home state on his broad shoulders in the first Group 1 contest of the winter carnival.

Interstate raiders are set to descend on the Sunshine State in their droves to gang-tackle the time-honoured sprint race, which has not been won by a locally trained horse since the late, great Spirit Of Boom (Sequalo) soared to victory for Tony Gollan 12 years ago.

What's On

Grafterburners, on the third line of betting behind Ciaron Maher’s topliner Jimmysstar (Per Incanto) and the second emergency Napoleonic (Wootton Bassett), will therefore need to defy the weight of recent history as he looks to turbocharge the fledgling career of his sire Graff (Star Witness), who stood at Kitchwin Hills in 2025 for a service fee of $9,900 (inc GST).

Perhaps the pinnacle of Grafterburners’ career to date came at the start of the year when the colt cruised to victory in the $3 million Magic Millions Sunlight 3YO Plate (1100m) under James McDonald, who was offered the ride in the Doomben 10,000 but - perhaps unwisely - elected to jump ship to Napoleonic.

Damian Lane subsequently took over in the saddle for Grafterburners’ minor placing behind Tempted (Street Boss) in the Arrowfield Sprint (Gr 2, 1200m), but with the Western Australian hoop embarking on his annual riding stint in Japan, trainer Kelly Schweida turned to his old friend Zac Purton.

The pair go back a long way, with Purton riding extensively for Schweida when he was an apprentice jockey in Brisbane in the early 2000s. Indeed, Schweida has the distinction of providing Purton with his first taste of Group 1 action in the 2003 Underwood Stakes (1800m), won by none other than Mummify (Jeune).

Schweida’s stayer Amalfi (Carnegie) ran last that day but there is little likelihood of a repeat result this Saturday, given Purton’s status as one of the world’s best jockeys and Grafterburner’s remarkable record of six wins - including the Gold Edition (Listed, 1200m) - and four placings from his 13 starts.

Schweida is convinced his crack colt’s CV was all set for a significant update in The Galaxy (Gr 1, 1100m), only for his anticipation to turn to agony when the pre-race favourite was a last-minute scratching following a barrier mishap.

But with that grave disappointment now in the rearview mirrors – and with Purton having completed his background checks on the opposition – Schweida is growing in his belief that Grafterburners can land an early blow for the local brigade when he jumps from barrier seven on Saturday.

“When you talk to Zac, he knows about the other horses more than I do,” Schweida told ANZ News.

“He knows everything and everyone so he’s been doing his homework on my horse and the rest of the field. It does look a strong renewal, I probably wasn’t expecting the likes of Jimmysstar to be in the race to be honest but if you compare recent form, my horse’s is probably as good as any other’s.

“I was very flat after The Galaxy, I thought that might’ve been his race with only 50.5 kilos on his back, but it wasn’t to be and he ran super in the Arrowfield. We had to give probably the best three-year-old sprinter in the land [Tempted] two kilos, and he finished less than two lengths behind her so it was a pretty good effort.

“If Damian [Lane] had got him out a little earlier, I’d say we would have run second so it was a very pleasing return and sets us up nicely for Saturday. After the Doomben 10,000 we’ll take a look at the Kingsford-Smith Cup then see if we can stretch him out to 1400 metres in the Stradbroke, but it’s a run by run proposition at the minute so his performances will dictate what path we’ll take.”

Schweida took a $70,000 punt on the colt from Graff’s first crop at the 2024 Inglis Classic Sale, and with more than $2.1 million already banked he has been richly rewarded – much to the delight of Grafterburner’s co-breeders John Barnes and Joy Mackay, who ran Canning Downs Stud in the Queensland town of Warwick before stepping away from active service last year.

Mackay admits it was a wrench to wind down the family business after Canning Downs had been in operation for more than a century, but with no succession plans in place and her 75th birthday on the horizon, the timing felt right.

She and Barnes still retain an ownership interest in a handful of horses, but Mackay readily concedes that “none of them are going to change my life”. Grafterburners, on the other hand, may well have done but any sense of regret the pair may have harboured at not retaining a share in the colt is tempered by Mackay’s admiration for the job Schweida has done with the farm’s gallant graduate.

“I really admire Kelly, he’s backed his judgement with this colt right the way through and now he’s got a live chance in a Group 1 on Saturday,” Mackay told ANZ News.

“He deserves every accolade and every bit of luck that comes his way, especially after what happened that day in The Galaxy. Grafterburners was from Graff’s first crop so Kelly didn’t have anything to compare him to, but he was prepared to stick his neck out and pay a pretty decent price for the colt.

“We always really liked the colt, but you would have been hard pushed to say that he would go on to become the racehorse he is. Had we known, we would have kept half but as a breeder you often tend to stay in the slow ones and sell the fast ones.

I really admire Kelly, he’s backed his judgement with this colt right the way through and now he’s got a live chance in a Group 1 on Saturday

Joy Mackay

“In fairness, Kelly probably saw more potential in him than we did, so credit to him for his judgement. After he bought him, Kelly joked that we could both have saved on the travel expenses to Sydney and just floated him straight from our farm to his stables.

“We’ve obviously followed his progress closely ever since, and he’s definitely the best horse we bred towards the end of our time at Canning Downs.

“It would be lovely for Kelly and the owners if he could win a Group 1 on Saturday, sadly we can’t be there in person but we’ll certainly be shouting loudly at the TV in our living room. It would be a proud moment for Queensland if a horse bred and trained here could win one of our biggest races.”

Jimmysstar bidding to bounce back in Doomben 10,000

Jimmysstar (Credit: Sportpix)

Cairon Maher’s assistant trainer Jack Turnbull believes luck in running will be key for star sprinter Jimmysstar (Per Incanto) when he lines up in Saturday’s Doomben 10,000 (Gr 1, 1200m), with the gelding’s racing pattern continuing to leave him vulnerable despite his talent. The New Zealand-bred has won 11 of his 26 starts, including three times at the highest level, banking over $8.5 million in prize-money. Last seen placing third in the All Aged Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) behind Beiwacht (Bivouac) at Randwick on April 18, he is yet to win this preparation, though Turnbull remains optimistic about his chances. “The only run that was sub-par was at Caulfield [when seventh in the William Reid Stakes] and you could really argue the track that day,” Turnbull said. “His runs have been good and improving and he will continue to improve, especially poking up to Queensland at this time of year.” Jimmysstar will jump from barrier 11 in the Doomben 10,000 after being based at Bong Bong since his Randwick run. He is set to be partnered by Ethan Brown, who has ridden him to his past four victories and will fly in from Hong Kong after being given a release to ride. Stablemate Another Wil (Street Boss) faces a tougher assignment in the hands of Ryan Maloney after drawing gate 19 for his first start since the spring, while Warnie (Highland Reel) will jump from barrier nine with Mark Zahra booked to ride.

Title Fighter chases second Straight Six success

Trainer Clayton Douglas is hoping Title Fighter (Lean Mean Machine) can successfully defend his crown in Saturday’s Straight Six (Listed, 1200m) at Flemington after following a near-identical path to last year’s preparation. The five-year-old claimed the Listed contest 12 months ago after finishing sixth in the Wangoom Handicap (Listed, 1200m) at Warrnambool and again heads to HQ off the back of a respectable Wangoom performance, finishing fourth behind Oliveanotherday (Nicconi). The gelding will carry 60 kilograms, up from 54 last year, but will have in-form rider Jamie Mott – Victoria's leading jockey for the season with 102 wins – in his favour. Title Fighter resumed with a fifth closing fifth in the Hareeba Stakes (Listed, 1200m) behind Recon (Cosmic Force) before his Wangoom effort on heavy ground. Douglas said the campaign had been mapped with Saturday’s race in mind. “He obviously won the race last year and it’s been a bit of a plan to keep him on a similar program this time,” Douglas said. “His three runs have all been planned since the start of his campaign. He was good first-up, was good again last week behind a nice horse and hopefully he can get the job done third-up.” Title Fighter shares topweight honours with Corniche (Fastnet Rock), with a 21-horse nomination list also including Pop Award (Shamus Award), De Bergerac (Zoustar), Immortal Star (I Am Immortal) and Stoli Bolli (Deep Field).

Beer hoping Mafia can get back to winning ways

Trainer Mitch Beer believes front-runner Mafia (Written Tycoon) is ready to peak third-up when he drops back in grade for Wednesday’s Kia Northern Region Dealer Of The Year Handicap (1250m) at Kensington. The five-year-old has finished fourth in both runs this preparation in Benchmark 78 (1250m) company, including a last-start effort at Canterbury Park, where he led before weakening late. Beer said the gelding historically improves with racing and expected him to be nearing peak fitness now. “He’s a big burly horse, he took two or three runs for him to hit his best for us last preparation,” Beer told Racing NSW. “I thought in his last run he just felt the pinch 50m-100m from home so he’ll be spot on. He gets back to that 72 grade, if he takes a length improvement fitness wise and a length improvement from going back in grade that’s probably enough to have him winning.” Beer, who trains in partnership with George Carpenter, said the stable is keen to stretch Mafia out to 1400 metres later this campaign, with a Midway Handicap (1400m) already under consideration. Meanwhile, stablemate Sunrise (Charm Spirit) will remain in Benchmark company when she heads to Scone on Saturday after resuming in the Hawkesbury Gold Rush (Listed, 1100m). The mare placed in The Warra (1000m) during the spring and Beer expects her to improve sharply second-up. “She probably needed that run first-up, she drew one and was stuck on the fence which wasn’t the ideal position on the day,” he said.

Pollard dual handed at Ipswich

Trainer Todd Pollard will saddle multiple runners in the same race for the first time when in-form pair Subterrain (Territories) and All Kinds Of Folk (D'Argento) clash in Wednesday’s TAB Class 4 Handicap (1680m) at Ipswich. The young Brisbane horseman has made a flying start to his training career, preparing six winners from just 17 starters since branching out on his own earlier this year after working as assistant trainer to Annabel and Rob Archibald. “I couldn’t be happier with how it’s all panned out,” Pollard said. “You can’t win them all and you lose more than you win in this game, but it’s a healthy strike-rate and a good way to kick things off.” Pollard admitted he would have preferred to separate the pair but said limited programming options for midweek metropolitan-grade horses had forced them to meet. All Kinds Of Folk heads into the race off a first-up Sunshine Coast victory after transferring from Wangaratta trainers John and Chris Ledger, while Subterrain has won three of his five starts and has been successful at both Eagle Farm and the Gold Coast from two starts this preparation. The Group 3-placed All Kinds Of Folk has drawn barrier two with Ryan Maloney to ride, while Subterrain will jump from gate seven with Ben Thompson back aboard after being freshened since his latest win. Pollard said Subterrain would likely head for a break after Wednesday before returning for targets later in the year.

No Ascot trip for Lady Of Camelot after stingray attack

Group 1-winning mare Lady Of Camelot (Written Tycoon) could have run her final race after her Brisbane Winter Carnival and Royal Ascot campaigns were abandoned following a stingray attack. Owner Go Bloodstock confirmed on Instagram on Tuesday that the four-year-old had been transferred to a specialist veterinary hospital and would remain under close observation as connections prioritise her recovery. “While the immediate focus is on her recovery and well-being, the decision has been made to end her Brisbane Winter Carnival and international campaigns effective immediately,” the statement read. “A decision regarding her future will be made in due course. Given her elite pedigree and Group 1 success, she remains a highly valuable prospect.” Queensland stewards were advised by co-trainer Adrian Bott on Tuesday morning that the mare had encountered a stingray at a Brisbane beach. Lady Of Camelot had been set to contest Saturday’s Doomben 10,000 at Doomben before a planned trip to Royal Ascot next month.

Baker confident with Overpass at Royal Ascot

Overpass (Credit: Sportpix)

Trainer Bjorn Baker believes seasoned sprinter Overpass (Vancouver) is well placed to make his mark at Royal Ascot next month, with the gelding’s racing and travel experience expected to prove invaluable in the King Charles III Stakes (Gr 1, 5f). The seven-year-old, a winner of ten races and more than $12.5 million in prize-money, is set to head to the UK after a final trial at Randwick on Friday before flying out from Melbourne. He will be based with Charlie Hills at Lambourn during the campaign. “At his best he’s very good and he’s been up against so many good sprinters,” Baker told Racing.com. “You talk about Ka Ying Rising, Joliestar in the T.J. Smith recently, and he’s had a fair few battles with Nature Strip. It’s sort of always been in the back of our minds and it’s now or never. I think as a seven-year-old, his experience – he’s got a lot of frequent-flyer points around Australia – so hopefully he travels well there.” Overpass is currently the second favourite for the King Charles III Stakes behind Chris Waller’s Joliestar (Zoustar).

Keeley straight to work in Queensland

English jockey Aidan Keeley is hoping to make his mark in Queensland racing after relocating from the UK, with the 24-year-old wasting little time getting acquainted with his new surroundings. Keeley arrived in Australia on Friday morning before riding at both Ipswich and Clifford Park within 48 hours of landing, taking six rides across the two meetings. “I’ve always kept an interest in Australian racing, I think it’s so well run,” Keeley told Racing Queensland. “It’s a great life for a jockey over here. It’s quite rewarding, if you put the work in, you can get rewarded quite nicely. I spent a little holiday here two years ago visiting some friends in Melbourne who work in racing that I knew from the UK. Since then it’s always been in the back of my mind to come out here, make the move and give it a good go.” Keeley, who will be based on the Gold Coast, has ridden more than 100 winners in Britain since debuting in 2020 and enjoyed a career-best season recently with 43 victories. His biggest success came in the Cambridgeshire Handicap (1m 1f) as a five-pound claimer. “I’ve ridden for some big trainers in the UK and was fortunate enough to ride in some decent races at some decent tracks,” he said. “There are things I’ve got to pick up on and alter slightly just to adapt to the way of racing over here. I’m watching racing as much as I can, trying to learn every bit of difference that there is from racing over here to back home.”

New-look Belmont promised on Saturday

Perth Racing says punters will notice a dramatically revamped Belmont Park Racecourse when racing returns to the venue on Saturday following an $8 million redevelopment project. The upgraded facility will reopen with the running of the Belmont Sprint (Gr 3, 1400m), with Perth Racing chief executive James Oldring saying the venue had been transformed into a more modern metropolitan racing and entertainment destination. Among the key additions is a new 200-square-metre “superscreen” positioned on the main straight before the finishing post, while extensive renovations have also been completed across hospitality and member areas. “The experience now at Belmont will better reflect what everyone should expect from a metropolitan race club,” Oldring said. “I’m hoping these renovations completely redefine Belmont’s reputation as a venue, not only for racing, but also for entertainment.” The redevelopment includes a refurbished Old Mate’s Sports Bar, a new Vantage platform for owners and members overlooking the mounting yard, upgrades to the Riverview and members’ floors and renovated fourth-floor corporate suites. New roofing, air-conditioning and improved accessibility have also been installed. The announcement follows a strong season for Perth Racing at Ascot Racecourse, where more than 77,000 patrons attended the annual carnival, while 57 per cent of ticket buyers were under 30 years old.

RV axes new vet just day after appointment

Racing Victoria (RV) have axed their new chief veterinary officer Glenn Robertson-Smith, with the announcement coming just one day after his appointment. The removal comes following a report on betsy.com.au that Robertson-Smith made threats to kill former Melbourne Racing Club executive Jake Norton via anonymous messages left on Norton’s phone. Robertson-Smith was sentenced to a diversion order but avoided a criminal conviction, which allowed him to keep his vet licence. RV confirmed his termination to betsy.com.au on Tuesday afternoon.

Pier set to return following wind operation, brother to make debut

Pier (Credit: Race Images)

Darryn and Briar Weatherley’s Group 1 winner Pier (Proisir) is set to make a welcome return to their Matamata stable at the start of next month following a wind operation. The six-year-old son of Proisir (Choisir) had made a pleasing return over summer, finishing runner-up in the Otaki Maori WFA Classic (Gr 1, 1600m) at Ellerslie in February before finishing a distant last in the Bonecrusher New Zealand Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at the Auckland track on Champions Day. A vet exam revealed a slight abnormality on the left side of his larynx and he subsequently underwent a tie-back operation to resolve the issue. “He had tie-back surgery after his last run at Ellerslie. He’s in rehab now and recovering well,” Briar Weatherley said. “We are really happy with him and he’s looking to get back into the stable on June 1, so we are looking forward to getting him back.” While the Weatherleys are looking forward to Pier’s imminent return, they are excited to kick-off the career of his full-brother Aventus in the Entain/NZB Insurance Pearl Series (1200m) at Matamata on Wednesday. The two-year-old colt impressed the father-daughter partnership when winning his trial over 850 metres at Te Awamutu last month, and Weatherley said he is showing signs he has inherited the family talent, with the youngster also being a half-brother to Group 3 winner Maria Farina (Contributer). “He has been a nice colt right from the start and has promised a lot,” Weatherley said. “I think he reeks of natural family ability. I’m looking forward to kicking him off on Wednesday and I’m sure whatever he does he’s only going to improve going into next prep.”

Cooper brings up century of wins

It may have taken him longer than he would have liked, but apprentice jockey Donovan Cooper was rapt to record his 100th win in the saddle at Ascot Park on Sunday. The expat South African brought up the milestone in the opening race of the card aboard the Michael and Matthew Pitman-trained Ferdie's Secret (Ferrando), and he was relieved to get the win after believing he was a certainty on Express Coup (Shamexpress) at Riverton two days prior but being denied 0.1 lengths by Sir Sterling (Iffraaj). “It was a tough one to get to, I was a bit stagnant on 99, I have had a lot of placings lately,” Cooper said. “I thought I’d already have it on the Friday on Express Coup, but it just didn’t work out.” It was the second consecutive win for Ferdie’s Secret, who broke through for his maiden win at Riverton last Friday with fellow apprentice Ohara Najib in the saddle, while Cooper didn’t have to wait long to add to his tally on Sunday, winning aboard the Kelvin Tyler-trained Flash Roca (El Roca) before the meeting was abandoned due to poor visibility. Cooper has come a long way in four seasons of riding and said he felt 100 wins was an impossible goal when starting off in Cambridge. “It means the world to me because I didn’t think I would actually get there as an apprentice at the start, but once I established myself down south it looked pretty doable. I did enjoy Cambridge, but it was a bit difficult with the lack of opportunities and I would stress out trying to find the rides. Since I have moved down here [Canterbury] I have got a lot more opportunities, which has been great, and I have come to call the South Island home.”

HK: Joao Moreira targets missing Group 1 crown

Deep Monster (Credit: HKJC)

Joao Moreira is looking to complete a full sweep of Hong Kong’s top-level races when the Brazilian rider links with overseas contender Deep Monster (Deep Impact) in the Standard Chartered Champions & Chater Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) on May 24 at Sha Tin. Hong Kong stages 12 Group 1 races every season and Moreira has won them all except for the Triple Crown’s finale. This year, he’s up against the might of Romantic Warrior (Acclamation), who is bidding to become the third conqueror of the three-race challenge after River Verdon (Be My Native) (1993/94) and Voyage Bubble (Deep Field) last season. “It’s a shame that I haven’t won this race, but I’m glad that I am still giving myself a chance to maybe tick that box,” Moreira said. “I’ve only seen [Deep Monster’s] replays. He’s a last-start winner in the Middle East. The race is very strong; however, I’m hoping he runs well.” Moreira is a four-time Hong Kong Champion Jockey (2014/15, 2015/16, 2016/17 & 2020/21) with 1,250 wins in the city. The 42-year-old, who is currently on a short-term contract attached to Caspar Fownes’ stable, partners dual Group 2 winner Deep Monster for the first time against eight possible rivals in Sunday week’s stamina test.

HK: Zac Purton nears phenomenal milestone

Zac Purton (Credit: HKJC)

Following his 1,990th Hong Kong victory last Saturday, Zac Purton is closing in on becoming the first to ride 2,000 career wins in the city. The Australian Racing Hall of Famer has seven chances on Wednesday, including Aurio (Capitalist) in the Class 3 Deauville Handicap (1200m) for trainer Manfred Man. “He just needs speed to suit. He can be a little bit tricky in the gates, but he’s been good recently. I thought he probably could have hit the line a little better than he did last time. Maybe the big weight in this class is anchoring him down a bit,” Purton said. Purton is atop last-start second Romantic Gladiator (Ten Sovereigns) in the Class 3 French May Trophy Handicap (1650m) for trainer Danny Shum, who saddles seven runners as he trails championship-leading Mark Newnham by one win. Purton said: “He seems to have come to hand quick enough and last time he showed that he’s getting the hang of things. He’s a horse that is showing he’s ready to do something properly now.”
