Inspections are in full swing for the Magic Millions National weanling sale and prospective buyers coming into the complex from the car park cannot miss the Baramul Stud consignment in the Chester stable.
Baramul has 20 weanlings catalogued for Sunday’s sale and racing manager Luke McDonald is hoping buyers will be patient picking their penultimate colt to go through the sale-ring as one of the standouts of the draft. Catalogued as Lot 326, he’s a son of Widden Stud’s Champion Australian Sire Zoustar from I Am Invincible mare Grandstraand.
“He’s by the right sire and you can also see the ‘Vinnie’ in him,” McDonald said. “He’s well-shaped, precocious and has so much commercial appeal. Buyers will gravitate to him and make money whether they’re end-users or pinhookers for the Yearling Sales or Ready To Run Sales next year.”
There are only two entries by Zoustar at the Gold Coast and his weanlings are at a premium this year with the three-quarter brother to Zousain being the only one to change hands at the Inglis Weanling Sale earlier this month.
Baramul Stud’s Zoustar colt is the first foal from Grandstraand who is an unraced daughter of MRC Oakleigh Plate (Gr 1, 1100m) winner Mrs Onassis (General Nediym). Trained by Gerald Ryan, Mrs Onassis was also successful at Listed level in the ATC Starlight Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill and MRC Alinghi Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield.
Mrs Onassis is a homebred for Magic Millions owner Gerry Harvey and is one of eight black-type winners under third-dam Miss Jakeo (Unbridled’s Song). Her latest foal is a Hawaii Five Oh colt on the ground at Baramul.
Baramul has a stake in Vinery Stud sire Hawaii Five Oh (I Am Invincible) and has entered six of his first-crop foals for the Magic Millions Weanling Sale. “His colt out of our NZ-bred mare One Pose (Lot 72) is a lovely mover and light on his feet,” McDonald said. “His dam is a young mare by Swiss Ace who is building a very good strike-rate as a broodmare sire.
“The Hawaii Five Oh foals are cookie cutters. He really stamps them and the feedback has been exciting. We’ve had broodmare owners asking if we have any of his shares available on the back of these first foals,” he said.
Another highlight from Baramul is the Pierro filly out of speedy I Am Invincible mare Selburose (Lot 126). “Pierro needs no introduction and the filly’s dam was a multiple city winner in Sydney and Melbourne for Chris Waller.
“Selburose was a high-cruising mare who could cut out some extra-fast sectionals and her filly is 9 out of 10 looks with the scope to grow into that frame. She will make a racehorse,” McDonald enthused.
Timing is everything and Vinery Stud has foals by its resident sires All Too Hard (Casino Prince)
and Exceedance (Exceed and Excel) for sale on Sunday as well as a Shinzo colt from Hot Little Thing
(Army Mule) in their draft as
Lot 338.
All Too Hard has been a mainstay on the Vinery roster and he added another juvenile
stakes-winner to his impressive resume when Music Time claimed the Black Opal Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m)
in March. Music Time signalled a bright future for Canberra trainer Gratz Vella when following
up with an on-pace third to Guest House and Streisand in Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m).
The latest All Too Hard black-type winner, his 34th, arrived when Losesomewinmore landed a
last-to-first victory in the VRC Straight Six Handicap (Listed, 1200m) at Flemington just last
Saturday.
The All Too Hard chestnut filly from Vinery is out of Headwater mare Water Dove
(Lot 202) who was a 2YO winner for Brett Cavanough. “I can see her being an early winner, too,”
General Manager of Vinery, Adam White said. “She’s a compact, neat filly and already looks to
be a forward filly.”
Shinzo (Snitzel) topped the Inglis Weanling Sale with a $600,000 filly (ex Special Lover) and his colt from Vinery is the second foal out of a USA-bred mare, Hot Little Thing, a lightly raced juvenile sprinter who won the Back Home Again Stakes (Listed, 1000m) at Indianapolis.
“Shinzo did extra well with his first foals in Sydney,” White said. “Our foal is an attractive type and looks like she will be a forward filly.”
The Exceedance – Meow colt, lot 46, fits the same category. He is a half-brother to Ballarat 2YO winner Honor Galore (Spirit Of Boom) and their dam is by Vinery legend More Than Ready (USA) who sired Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) winners Sebring and Phelan Ready amongst his 236 international Stakes winners.
Coolmore Stud freshman Home Affairs (I Am Invincible) had 11 foals which averaged $205,000 at the Inglis Weanling Sale with another 11 catalogued for the Magic Millions National Sale.
Home Affairs has four colts and two fillies from Coolmore and one of the highlights is Lot 251, the half-sister to MRC Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Madame Pommery (No Nay Never).
They are from Exceed And Excel mare Cancel who is a full-sister to MRC Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Earthquake. “She’s in the same mould as Madame Pommery,” Coolmore’s Marketing & Nominations manager Tom Moore said. “She’s a quality, high-end filly with a top-class pedigree. She had plenty going for her and wouldn’t be out of place in any sale anywhere.”
Madame Pommery was foaled and raised at Coolmore and sold for $150,000 to Chris Waller as a yearling in 2021. She returned to Coolmore after being purchased by Tom Magnier for $2.7 million at the 2024 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale.
The Magic Millions weanling sale will start from 10am on Sunday the 24th of May.
