‘He seems to be in good order’ – Berzelius bidding to back up Sires’ Produce win in J.J. Atkins

Michael Freedman is optimistic two-year-old colt Berzelius (Extreme Choice) can prove his last-start win was no fluke while enhancing the strong records of his trainer and his sire - including in tandem - in Saturday’s J.J. Atkins (Gr 1, 1600m).

Berzelius, the eighth foal of dual Melbourne Listed winner Secret Liaison (Artie Schiller), was a $340,000 purchase at Magic Millions Gold Coast, and has come to hand perhaps more quickly than connections had expected.

What's On

Sporting the dual-blue silks of co-buyer Kia Ora stud, he was sent north by Freedman to his Gold Coast satellite stable under the watch of the trainer’s foreman and brother, Lee, for his debut at Doomben in an 1110-metre juvenile handicap, on April 22. Little fancied at $11, he came from worse than midfield to score by 1.44 lengths.

That was enough to send him into the Gold Coast’s Ken Russell Memorial Classic (Gr 3, 1200m) as a $3.70 second favourite, but he ostensibly looked slightly disappointing in running fourth, beaten five lengths.

Freedman wasn’t greatly deterred, although punters were, allowing Berzelius to drift to $31 for his next start in Eagle Farm’s Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m).

But with the addition of visors the colt produced a powerhouse run, coming from ninth on the turn to wear down leader Vantorix (Captivant) and score by 0.32 lengths.

He became the fourth stakes winner by Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt) that Freedman has trained, among the Newgate Farm super sires’ 19 black type victors overall, making him the most successful trainer of the stallion’s stock.

In partnership with brother Richard, Freedman trained the sub-fertile sensation’s first elite winner in Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) hero Stay Inside, as well as Tiger Of Malay, a forerunner to Berzelius in winning the Queensland Sires’ Produce of 2021.

Since going solo, Freedman has also enjoyed strong success with Apocalyptic, the MyRacehorse filly who won the last three legs of Randwick’s Princess Series last spring, capped by the Flight Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m).

Randwick-based Freedman, who split from Richard in early 2022, has enjoyed resounding success this season, shooting into the top eight of trainers nationwide for metro wins, after finishing outside the top 20 in 2024-25. His 64 such victors come at a strike-rate of 17.6 per cent - the best of any stable in the top 10.

The 58-year-old also ranks 11th in the country for winners overall, with 99 at a hefty rate of 18.1 per cent, and has claimed two elite titles in 2025-26, with Apocalyptic’s success preceding The Galaxy (Gr 1, 1100m) triumph of last season’s Golden Slipper winner Marhoona (Snitzel).

Freedman is now hopeful Berzelius can bring him his sixth solo Group 1, and his tenth overall, as he strives to provide Extreme Choice with his seventh - a stunning number considering the stallion has just 19 black type victors.

“He seems to be in good order,” Freedman said of Berzelius, an $8 equal-third favourite for the Atkins.

“I had a look at him early last week when I was up at the Gold Coast for the weanling and broodmare sales, and he’s come through the Sires’ run in great order.

“He’s a horse I’ve always had a bit of time for. He ran very well first-up to win, then got to that tighter track at the Gold Coast, and just struggled to get around it nearly as well and was a bit wayward. It was only in the last 150 metres he got himself organised and hit the line strongly.

2 wins at 2, A$630,750, in 2025-26, BRC Sires' Produce S., Gr.2, Gallopers Sports Club 2YO H., 4th GCTC Ken Russell Memorial Classic, Gr.3.

“Back on a bigger track with a bit of headgear on in the Sires’, I thought he could run well - I certainly didn’t think he was a $31 chance - and he did, and he looked strong late.

“Obviously he’s now taking a big step up in both distance and class. Chris Waller’s got a couple of handy ones going into the race, and there’s some others that were good runs in the Sires’ as well, but I’m optimistic Berzelius can run well.”

Like most in the field, Berzelius is rising to 1600 metres for the first time, but Freedman is inclined to believe that shouldn’t pose a problem.

His dam Secret Liaison won at up to 1800 metres at Caulfield for the Ellerton-Zahra stable and ran third in Randwick’s Adrian Knox Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m). And Extreme Choice has shown a knack for leaving pretty much anything, from 1200-metre juvenile top-flight winners to Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) hero Knight’s Choice.

“You’re always a bit unsure going to the mile with a two-year-old, but the way he ran out the 1400 [metres], you’d think if he can get a nice economical run he should hopefully be able to run well again,” Freedman said of Berzelius, who’ll be ridden by Tommy Berry, his partner in his past two starts.

“You can never be too sure about what trip they’re going to get in time, but I think a mile’s within his grasp. Whether it’s this prep or next prep, we’re about to find out.”

Bred by Newgate managing director Henry Field and associates SF Bloodstock and Hollymount Stud, Berzelius was bought at the Gold Coast by Freedman and his late friend and bloodstock agent Mick Wallace along with Kia Ora Stud.

That came after a nudge from Field and Newgate’s stud manager Jim Carey.

I always like it when these young horses get a trip away - they usually come back a bit more seasoned - so it’ll be very interesting to see what he’s like in the spring

Michael Freedman

“He wasn’t an obvious type,” Freedman said. “Whilst he was certainly on my list, he wasn’t one I was going to pin the ears back on.

“But full credit to Henry Field and Jim Carey. They encouraged me to buy him, and said they’d stay in him and put some of their clients in him. That sealed the deal.

“At $340,000 and being by Extreme Choice, I thought it was good buying. It certainly looks that way now, seeing what Extreme Choice’s yearlings have done this year.”

The stallion’s yearlings have boomed in 2026, coming from a book of high-class mares after his service fee hit the stratosphere, with 32 sold at an average of $796,000, up from $478,000 in 2025. The rising 13-year-old, with an SWTR ratio of 12.02 per cent, will stand at Newgate this spring for an Australian record equalling $385,000 (inc GST).

Freedman said Berzelius was “a very sensible colt” but was still physically and mentally immature.

“Even looking at him the other day, there’s still another six months until he’s fully matured, and he’s still quite green in his racing manners,” he said.

“So it will be interesting to see his progression from this prep into his next. I always like it when these young horses get a trip away - they usually come back a bit more seasoned - so it’ll be very interesting to see what he’s like in the spring.”

Berzelius’s immaturity was part of the reason for the addition of visors for the Sires’, without risking overdoing things by trying blinkers.

“We just felt that at the Gold Coast he got lost and was a bit wayward, so we thought a bit of headgear would give him a bit more confidence and focus,” Freedman said.

“We tossed up about visors or blinkers, but decided to go with the visors. He probably over-travelled a touch early in the race, but once he got into a nice rhythm and found a spot with some cover, he was quite tractable. Plus he enjoyed getting onto a bigger track at Eagle Farm.”

Waller and owners Hermitage have the two at the top of the market for the Atkins.

Tron Bolt (Toronado) is at $2.25 as he attempts to follow two-year-old handicap wins over 1400 metres at Kensington and 1300 metres on a Rosehill Saturday by becoming his sire’s seventh elite winner, and the first since Bois D’Argent’s Doomben Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) two years ago.

And Stormy Marco (Wootton Bassett) is at $5 as he seeks to improve on an eighth in the Sires’ Produce and return the late Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj) to the top of the second season stallions’ table. He lost top spot to Bivouac (Exceed And Excel) on the weekend when that sire’s daughter Fireball Miss took the Queensland Oaks (Gr 1, 2200m).

Success for Stormy Marco would also give Wootton Bassett his second Australian-bred top-level victor - and in the space of two weeks - following the win of the Waller-trained Providence in the Queensland Derby (Gr 1, 2400m).

Freedman said following the Atkins, Berzelius would spell in the Queensland sunshine for some four weeks before returning to work for a spring campaign likely aimed at Rosehill’s Golden Rose (Gr 1, 1400m).

Morning Briefing

Australia

12 for Home Affairs

Champion Australian first-season sire elect Home Affairs (I Am Invincible) added a 12th individual winner to his tally on Monday when the Chris Waller-trained Miss Scandal (2 f ex Kylie's Fame by More Than Ready) broke through at Canterbury. Having shown ability in two previous starts, the filly made full use of a positive ride from Tyler Schiller to lead throughout and defeat stablemate Satin Serenade (Frankel) by 0.1 lengths in the 1250-metre maiden. “The second filly got a bit lost on the corner and the other filly skipped away,” Waller stable representative Darren Beadman said. “What I was taken with by the winner was the way that she was able to control the race in front and not overdo it. The 1250 metres was probably going to be the question mark and when Tyler let slip a little bit early, I thought she might be a little bit vulnerable, which she was, so it was a deserving win because she did take up the running and made them all work for it.” A $320,000 purchase from Westbury Stud's draft at Karaka Book 1, Miss Scandal races for the Ritchie family, whose colours were carried to Group 1 success this season by Autumn Boy (The Autumn Sun). Bred by Gerry Harvey, she is the third winner from four runners out of the metropolitan-winning More Than Ready (Southern Halo) mare Kylie’s Fame, herself a half-sister to stakes winner Madeenaty (Exceed And Excel) out of Group 2 winner Set For Fame (Reset). Coolmore’s Home Affairs will stand the upcoming breeding season at an increased fee of $176,000 (inc GST).

Eight for Stay Inside

Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m)-winning sire Stay Inside (Extreme Choice) brought up his eighth individual winner when The Machine Gun (2 c ex Don’ttelltheboss by Street Boss) made a successful debut at Canterbury on Monday. Prepared by Peter Snowden, The Machine Gun had shown ability at the trials and arrived at his first raceday appearance off a winning Gosford barrier trial last month. Settled in fourth by Tim Clark, the colt travelled strongly before sweeping into contention around the home turn and finding enough in the closing stages to defeat race favourite Klocke (Zoustar) by 0.2 lengths in the 1250-metre maiden. “He's pretty casual. I just wanted to build his revs up before they quickened, so he was up and traveling forward into the race, especially around here, and he did that,” Clark said. “He picked up nicely, but then thought the job was done at about 100 metres. When he felt the second horse coming, he really surged again late, so he's a nice horse. He's still obviously raw but he's got a nice future. It's taken a while to get him there, but the best is well and truly ahead of him.” Bred by Trilogy Racing, The Machine Gun was purchased for $300,000 from Blue Gum Farm's Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale draft by Jason Warren Racing, Trilogy Syndications and Suman Hedge Bloodstock. The colt is the first winner out of the Group 3-placed Street Boss (Street Cry) mare Don’ttelltheboss, who produced a colt by Ozzmosis (Zoustar) last spring. Stay Inside will stand the upcoming breeding season at Newgate Farm for a fee of $66,000 (inc GST).

Begg eyes Stradbroke breakthrough with Splash Back

Splash Back (Credit: Sportpix)

Grahame Begg will be hoping Splash Back (Le Havre) can become his first Group 1 winner in Queensland since Eye Of The Sky (Long Row) captured the Doomben Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) in 1990 when the mare lines up in Saturday's Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m) at Eagle Farm. The six-year-old earned her place in the state's premier sprint with success in the Victory Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) in May before finishing ninth in the Kingsford-Smith Cup (Gr 1, 1300m) at her most recent start. Despite the unplaced result, Begg was satisfied with the performance. "We were very happy with her run," he said. "Down on the inside last week wasn't any good. You couldn't be too wide, and you couldn't close in, you had to be on the crest of the track where there was a little sweet spot." Splash Back is scheduled to complete her final piece of work at Eagle Farm ahead of Tuesday's barrier draw. The mare is set to carry five kilograms less than she did in the Kingsford-Smith Cup and 4.5 kilograms less than when defeating fellow Stradbroke contenders Payline (Shooting To Win) and Warnie (Highland Reel) in the Victory Stakes. "She's got a nice weight drop and Willo is booked," Begg added, with Craig Williams chasing a third success in the race after victories aboard Sniper's Bullet (Bite The Bullet) (2007) and Tofane (Ocean Park) (2021). Kingsford-Smith Cup winner Headley Grange (Exosphere) heads betting for the Stradbroke at $5.

Eagle Farm test awaits Half Yours

Half Yours (Credit: Sportpix)

Half Yours (St Jean) will head into Saturday's $1.2 million Q22 (Gr 2, 2200m) with no excuses according to co-trainer Calvin McEvoy, who believes Eagle Farm and the step up in distance will play to the reigning Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) and Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) winner's strengths. The five-year-old is yet to make an impact in two Queensland starts this campaign, placing fourth in the Hollindale Stakes (Gr 2, 1800m) and Doomben Cup. Finishing ahead of him on both of those occasions was star mare Pride Of Jenni (Pride Of Dubai) – winner of the Hollindale who came an admirable second to Birdman (Free Eagle) in the Doomben feature last start. Her presence again looms large, but McEvoy believes conditions will be far more favourable for Half Yours this time. “He’s very, very well,” McEvoy, who trains in partnership with his father Tony, told Racing.com. “He looks great. He’s shining and I think he’s probably as good as he’s been all preparation. He’s going to need to be. The team up there are super happy. He’ll do one more piece of work on Tuesday. The 2200 metres is going to be really good and Eagle Farm is going to suit. It’s been the one race out of all the races so far that should be suitable to him. I don’t want to sound like we’re making any excuses after the fact, but we thought Gold Coast wouldn’t suit and he’d be a little bit vulnerable and Doomben, a little bit similar, and now we are at Eagle Farm, he’s got no excuse.”

Weather to decide Portland's target

Matthew Smith will allow the weather to determine whether Portland (Dubawi) heads to Eagle Farm or Rosehill on Saturday, with the Lord Mayor's Cup (Listed, 2000m) winner entered for both the Q22 and Queen Elizabeth II Cup (Listed, 2400m). The five-year-old is rated a $26 chance for the Q22, while he sits on the second line of betting at $4.50 for the Sydney staying feature. “That's on the cards still, either that or the Q22,” Smith said. “We’ve put him in both and we’ll see what the tracks are like. He’s a bit dependent on getting some give in the ground. The weather will make the decision for us. He doesn't want a firm track.” Rain is forecast in Brisbane throughout the week leading into Stradbroke Day, while Rosehill is also expected to receive some rainfall before Saturday. Regardless of where Portland lines up, Smith is eager to test the gelding over a longer distance following his latest victory. “I needed to see him do everything right [last time],” he said. “He hadn't been settling that well in his races, but he settled beautifully with Winona [Costin] the other day so I think now we can go to 2400 metres. I don't know about beyond that, but 2400 shouldn't be a problem now he’s doing things right.” Smith has enjoyed success when travelling runners to Eagle Farm, operating at a strike-rate of 10.8 per cent winners and nearly 37 per cent placings from 65 starters at the track.

Gilded Water on track for Sandown return

King Charles III-owned stayer Gilded Water (Fastnet Rock) is set to resume his campaign at Sandown on Saturday, with Ciaron Maher's stable confident the gelding has recovered well from the exercise-induced pulmonary haemorrhage (EIPH) episode that marred his first-up performance last month. The promising stayer will tackle 1800 metres on the Hillside track with blinkers applied for his second run of the preparation. “He’ll go second-up, blinkers on,” Maher’s Melbourne assistant trainer Jack Turnbull told Racing.com. “I know he had an internal bleed and things didn’t go to plan [last start] but that is something we can manage and change. We alter their training. There are definitely things you can do. We do a lot of treadmill, which we find very effective. With him, it’s a bit of a balance as he’s a hard-going horse so you have to find that happy medium, but we deal with this often and not just your better horses. Your lower, mid-tier animals have the same issue and it’s just something you have to deal with. He’s as good as gold. We won’t change our program for him. He’s had that run now and hopefully we get back on a track that’s better for him.” Turnbull also provided an update on the stable's Stradbroke Handicap contenders Another Wil (Street Boss) and Warnie. “We just need to draw some barriers. Another Wil has got to go two weeks and two weeks but he seems to be in a pretty good spot,” he said. “Warnie was good first-up and disappointing second-up but back to handicap conditions, providing he draws a gate, he’ll get involved.”

Shinn back in the saddle

Blake Shinn has moved a step closer to a return to race-riding after receiving medical clearance to resume trackwork following the serious leg injuries he suffered at Flemington on Melbourne Cup Day last year. The jockey was back aboard horses at Cranbourne this week, riding in light work for partner and trainer Lucy Yeomans as he continues his rehabilitation. “It’s been a long road to get back and get on top of the horse,” Shinn told Racing.com. “It’s what I love to do, and it was a pretty special feeling to get back and be on board and get back to hopefully returning to riding.” Shinn has not ridden since sustaining a severe compound fracture to his left tibia and fibula in a race fall at Flemington in November, an injury that left his leg shattered in four places. The multiple Group 1-winning rider reported no major issues after his first sessions back in the saddle. “I feel great,” he said. “The body’s naturally going to be a bit sore but the leg’s holding up well. Muscles, they’re going to take a little bit of time to get back to their normal strength and fitness but overall, I’m really in good shape.” Shinn will continue riding in light work before progressing to gallops and jumpouts, with a race return targeted later in the winter. “All being well, I would love to think that I’d be at the jumpouts early July with a view to racing at the back end of winter to start the season off strong,” he said.

Living Legends co-founder and chief executive Dr Andrew Clarke has been recognised for his contribution to equine welfare after being awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the King's Birthday Honours. Clarke, an equine veterinarian, has led the renowned thoroughbred retirement facility for the entirety of its 20-year history and was praised by Racing Victoria (RV) chief executive Aaron Morrison following the announcement. “On behalf of Racing Victoria, I would like to offer my sincere congratulations to Dr Andrew Clarke, OAM for receiving the Medal of the Order of Australia for his exceptional service to equine welfare as part of the King’s Birthday Honours,” Morrison said. “Andrew has devoted most of his working life to the care of horses, and this honour is richly deserved. In his longstanding role at Living Legends, Andrew and his team have cared for some of the country’s greatest racehorses in their retirement, and so we thank and applaud him for his ongoing commitment to equine welfare.” Clarke said the recognition came as a surprise. “I was caught right off guard by it to be honest,” he said. “In reflection, I have been so lucky to work with so many different really good people and teams. I’ve just got to thank everyone that has been involved. It’s a great team and without them Living Legends just wouldn’t be.” Founded in 2006, Living Legends has become one of Australia's most recognised retirement homes for former racehorses, while also operating as a tourism destination and educational facility. Clarke said discussions were already underway with RV as the organisation looks ahead to its next 20 years.

Stakes assignments in the offing for promising juvenile

Promising juvenile filly Shamelia Kirk (Shamexpress) will have the opportunity to press her claims for upcoming black-type assignments when she contests Wednesday's rescheduled 2YO Sprint (1000m) at Trentham. The filly was runner-up on debut at Woodville in April and trainer Robbie Patterson is keen to see how she handles the Heavy 10 conditions before committing to next month's Castletown Stakes (Listed, 1200m) and Ryder Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Otaki. “I couldn’t be any happier with her,” Patterson said. “She jumped out at Stratford and went super. It will take a pretty good horse to beat her on Wednesday. At the moment she is thriving and happy, so if she can cop the Heavy track she will go to the Castletown and the Ryder.” Shamelia Kirk will be joined at Trentham by Sinbin (Derryn), who resumes her campaign in the 1200-metre contest after finishing fourth first-up at Otaki. “She had a good fresh-up run,” Patterson said. “She has improved immensely with that, she was carrying a lot of beef, she had a long time off. With natural improvement she will have to be going close.” Meanwhile, Patterson has elected to bypass Trentham with Group 3-placed filly Capaci (Tivaci) in favour of a start at Wanganui on Saturday. “We will go to Wanganui with her, it is not as much travel for her to go to Wanganui,” he said.

War Eternal adds to Cambridge Stud's Queensland success

War Eternal (Credit: Grant Peters)

Cambridge Stud's productive Queensland winter continued on Saturday when homebred gelding War Eternal (Pierro) secured a second black-type victory of the campaign in the Spear Chief Handicap (Listed, 1500m) at Eagle Farm. Prepared by Bjorn Baker, the seven-year-old was backing up from success in the Bernborough Handicap (Listed, 1600m) at Doomben and has now won seven races while earning more than $1 million. War Eternal is the first foal out of the Fastnet Rock (Danehill) mare Aleria, who was purchased for AU$200,000 at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale on behalf of Cambridge Stud principals Brendan and Jo Lindsay. “She’s a classic example of what Brendan and Jo have been doing for the last ten plus years, buying well-bred fillies to later come into the broodmare band,” Cambridge Stud sales and nominations manager Scott Calder said. War Eternal was sold through Karaka for $160,000 and Calder praised both Baker and bloodstock agent Jim Clarke for their roles in the horse's success. “It’s a credit to Bjorn Baker and his team,” he said. “His longevity is quite exceptional, and a lot of credit also has to go to Jim Clarke, who purchased the horse from us at Karaka for $160,000 and he’s gone on to earn $1 million, so it’s been a great investment.”

88 for Night Of Thunder

Britain and Ireland’s reigning champion sire Night Of Thunder (Dubawi) recorded his 88th individual stakes winner on Sunday when Fortuna Diamond (3 f ex Pure Diamond by Street Cry) landed the Prix Volterra (Listed, 1600m) at Longchamp. Trained by Henri-Alex Pantall and ridden by Tony Piccone, the three-year-old filly scored by a length over Cap Santa Lucia (Persian King), with Radiant (City Light) another two lengths back in third. A homebred for Godolphin, Fortuna Diamond is the second stakes winner out of the Listed-winning Street Cry (Machiavellian) mare Pure Diamond, following the exploits of Group 2-placed Listed scorer Sapphire Seas (Frankel). Pure Diamond is also the dam of the Group 3-placed winner Arabian Light (Kingman) and five-time winner Symbol Of Light (Shamardal). Night Of Thunder, who shuttled to Darley Australia for one season in 2016, stands at Kildangan Stud at a fee of €200,000 (approx. AU$327,000).

36 for Churchill

Former Coolmore shuttler Churchill (Galileo) sired his 36th individual stakes winner when Duckadilly (5 m ex Alutiq by Kodiac) landed Sunday’s Kooyonga Stakes (Listed, 1m) at Navan. The Daniel McLoughlin-trained mare hit the front inside the furlong marker and kept on to deny late challenger and stablemate Syzygy (Cable Bay) by a half-length, with the same margin further back to Sindria (Kodiac) in third. Bred by Murcot Investments, Duckadilly was a €12,000 purchase for DAC Bloodstock at the 2023 Goffs Autumn Horses-in-Training Sale. She is the first stakes winner out of Kodiac (Danehill) mare Alitiq, herself a half-sister to Group 2 winner and Group 1 placegetter Magical Memory (Zebedee). Churchill, who last shuttled to Australia in 2024, stands at Coolmore Stud in Ireland for a fee of €15,000 (approx. AU$24,542).

183 for Frankel

Tenability (4 g ex Tirania by Pivotal) became the 183rd individual stakes winner for Juddmonte Farms’ breed-shaping sire Frankel (Galileo) when he took out Sunday’s Tapster Stakes (Listed, 1m 4f) at Goodwood. Ridden by Cieren Fallon for trainer William Haggas, the four-year-old gelding made his run between horses, hitting the lead inside the furlong marker before keeping on to score by a neck over stablemate Hamish (Motivator). Glen Buck (Lope De Vega) finished another two lengths back in third. Bred by Miss Yvonne Jacques’ Carisbrooke Stud, Tenability is out of Pivotal (Polar Falcon) mare Tirania, herself a sister to Group 3 winner Penkenna Princess, the dam of Japanese Graded placegetters Danon Gelato (Deep Impact), World Impact (Deep Impact), and Tricolore Bleu (Stay Gold). Tirania was a €370,000 purchase for Brian Grassick Bloodstock at the 2015 Goffs Orby Yearling Sale. Frankel is standing at Banstead Manor Stud for £350,000 (approx. AU$662,445).

24 for Collected

Airdrie Stud stallion Collected (City Zip) chalked up his 24th individual stakes winner on Sunday when Pass The Hat (5 h ex Veronique by Mizzen Mast) took out the Poker Stakes (Gr 3, 8f) at Saratoga. Ridden by John Velazquez for trainer Bill Mott, the five-year-old entire narrowly denied his stablemate Capitol Hill (Into Mischief) by a nose with a further length and three-quarters back to the third-placed odds-on favourite Zulu Kingdom (Ten Sovereigns). Out of the unraced Mizzen Mast (Cozzene) mare Veronique, Pass The Hat is a half-brother to fellow stakes winner Nashville (Speightstown) and the stakes-placed winner Strategic Reserve (Munnings). Collected is standing for a fee of US$7,500 (approx. AU$10,600).

Aethera (Credit: Racing Photos)

ANZ News

Flemington’s Saturday opener was something to behold when two-year-old Aethera (Shamus Award) put up a magnificent performance in the TAB We’re On Handicap (1100m). Find your black book, add her name and circle it. Maybe add a couple of stars and an asterix or two!!

Although a smallish field, Aethera was locked up on the rail until the 200m. Jockey Damien Thornton ran out of patience waiting for a rails run and was forced to tug on the right rein, moving out four lanes and brushing another runner in the process. In clear air the filly flashed into overdrive and inside the 100m swept past her opponents and was extending her lead with every stride at the line. Performances like that are rare. Aethera is a filly that is going places.

Two facts are worth noting. First, Saturday’s big win was her first visit to the races, on the back of a February trial win and a tidy fourth (at Flemington) in her lead up trial. Second, Thornton rode her hands and heels all the way. She is a natural.

If you’re waiting for a New Zealand connection, of course there is as Aethera represents perhaps the hottest New Zealand family over the last few years, a family heavily influenced by the deadly combo of Waikato Stud stallions Savabeel (Zabeel) and O’Reilly (Last Tycoon).

Aethera’s story begins with the mid 1990s importation of Head Of The River (Shirley Heights) whose final foal was Chorus, a daughter of Waikato Stud’s Danasinga (Danehill). Although Chorus never raced, her O’Reilly daughters Symphonic and Glee have made serious waves within the industry. A third O’Reilly daughter, Tralee Chorus, might join them.

Rising 21, Chorus has produced six winners and in 2024 and 2025 foaled colts by Noverre (Savabeel). Current owner JML Bloodstock are no doubt hoping that the Savabeel factor continues and are praying for a filly. Symphonic heads the six as the winner of four races including at Ellerslie and was Group 3 placed in Trentham’s Cuddle Stakes (1600m).

Symphonic has foaled dual Group 1 winner (on both sides of the Tasman) Orchestral, a seven-times winner who beat the boys in the New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m). Symphonic also holds the record for having produced the record priced yearling filly at the NZB National Yearling Sale, of $2.4 million, for Orchestral’s sister at the 2025 sale.

Symphonic’s two years younger sister Glee never raced but her 2021 foal Savaglee (Savabeel) was the Champion New Zealand 3YO, taking out the New Zealand 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m), was a brave second in the Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) and a similarly brave third at weight-for-age (as a three-year-old) in Te Rapa’s CBD Sprint (Gr 1, 1400m).

Orchestral and Savaglee rank as brother and sister-in-blood as they are by Savabeel from sisters. They have since been retired, with Savaglee finding a home at Mapperley Stud in readiness for his first season this coming spring. Kiwi Chronicles spoke with Orchestral’s co-owner Colin Litt at Trentham recently hoping for a scoop regarding Orchestral’s mating plans but Litt had not decided. No doubt she will be highly sought after by all the leading studs.

Chorus’ first successful mating with O’Reilly produced Tralee Chorus in 2011. Catalogued but withdrawn from the 2013 NZB Karaka Yearling Sale, Tralee Chorus managed three wins, two in Victoria and her third and last win at Caloundra. A visit to Tasmania as a three-year-old saw her run third in the Tasmanian Oaks (Listed, 2100m). When right, Tralee Chorus possessed a strong finish, something Aethera appears to have inherited.

Aethera is Tralee Chorus’s fourth foal. Her fifth is a rising two-year-old sister by Shamus Award (Snitzel) which was foaled in New Zealand. When researching this article Kiwi Chronicles wondered if Tralee Chorus’s owners might consider sending her to Savabeel before it’s too late. Her owners were way ahead and in no surprise whatsoever, Tralee Chorus was returned to Waikato Stud in 2024 with the express purpose of visiting Savabeel and her owners will be delighted that she produced a filly last spring. That filly is rather valuable, being a further sister-in-blood to Orchestral and Savaglee.

Arion Pedigrees’ Maternal Descendants report reveals a number of interesting facts regarding Head Of The River who is responsible for 25 individual stakes winners since the mid 90s. Seven have scored at Group 1 level and three of those seven are by Savabeel. Already mentioned are Orchestral and Savaglee but to those you can add the outstanding mare Atishu (Savabeel) whose 11 wins included three at the elite Group 1 level, earning close to $6 million.

Atishu’s dam Posy is not only a sister to Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Daffodil (No Excuse Needed), her granddam, Spring (O’Reilly) is a three-quarter sister to Symphonic, Tralee Chorus and Glee.

In terms of recent production, five of the family’s Group 1 winners were foaled since 2017. Aegon (Sacred Falls), whose great granddam is Head Of The River, secured the New Zealand 2,000 Guineas and Sepals (Calyx), winner of the 2025 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m), also traces to Head Of The River. His fourth dam is Head Of The River’s Group 1 juvenile stakes winner Good Faith (Straight Strike).

Similarly, eight of the 25 stakes winners descending from Head Of The River were foaled since 2017. The others are: Marble Arch (Per Incanto), Mazzolino (Savabeel) and the family’s most recent stakes winner Regeneration (King’s Legacy), winner of Morphettville’s Redelva Stakes (Listed, 1100m) in April.

StrathAyr to the rescue

Winter! When cold and rain take over. A strong weather system postponed Trentham’s Saturday meeting until Wednesday but thanks to the great foresight of ATR (Auckland Thoroughbred Racing) Ellerslie’s StrathAyr surface provided what it was designed to provide and their meeting went ahead as planned.

Although the track degraded throughout the day, times held up remarkably well. Two early 1200-metre races were run in less than 1:12s. Later in the program the Elsdon Park 1400 (1400m), which attracted a useful field of three-year-olds, was run in 1:27.41s which is so much better than it might have been a few years back. So congratulations to the club. Their decision has paid off.

The first two home in the Set Weights and Penalties 3YO look well above average. Wine Rocs (El Roca) sat parked outside the leader until the 300m before taking over. He was strong to the line for win two at start four. He began his career with a Te Aroha win in late March and won well. Start two was a disaster as he was the subject of a lengthy stewards’ report having struck all sorts of bother in a run that was best forgotten. Start three saw him finish strongly, beaten 0.3 lengths at Ellerslie in mid May. This latest win should come as no surprise because he has some ability.

Wine Rocs (Credit: Race Images)

Wine Rocs is a homebred and was not offered at any auction sale. None of his close relatives have been offered either, the family closely retained by its breeders. He is the only foal of his dam, Our Fine Wine (Burgundy) who was successful twice including at Te Rapa. Our Fine Wine is one of three winners from Madam Kirk (Falkirk), a three-times winner. The next dam, unraced Gilfilani (Blues Traveller) is an interesting case as she was admitted to the Stud Book in 2014 as a “vehicle mare” due to the back family not being eligible for the stud book.

One possible reason for Gilfilani’s admittance might have been due to her dam, Railway Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Ardee One (Sharivari). Also, Gilfilani’s half-sister was Hairini (Zabeel) who produced Melbourne Listed juvenile winner Flying Firebird (Stravinsky) who in turn foaled the high-class Group 2 filly Smoulder (Traditionally). The most recent stakes winner in the family is Smoulder’s colt Burn To Shine (So You Think), winner of the 2023 War Decree Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) at Riccarton.

Second to Wine Rocs was Curved Glory (Ghaiyyath) who tracked Wine Rocs into the straight but took longer to wind up. However, she was taking ground off the winner near the line and is clearly above average. That was just her second start after scoring impressively on debut at the same track a month back.

Kool dude

Another three-year-old with a close connection to New Zealand is Saturday Randwick winner Ice Kool (Zoustar) who took his record to three wins in four starts, all three wins in Sydney and all this season. He has a bright future. A co-leader early, he sat parked one out to the top of the straight but when rider Jay Ford gave him a shake at the 200m he ran clear to win as he liked. Another for the black book and black-type for sure.

Ice Kool failed to reach his reserve at the 2024 Gold Coast Magic Millions Yearling Sale and is one of two winners from So Far Sokool (Showcasing) who began her race career in New Zealand after being purchased as weanling for a meagre $3000. A winner at two at Avondale, So Far Sokool ventured to Victoria where she landed a Listed win in the Bendigo Guineas (1400m) as well as at Moonee Valley.

So Far Sokool’s dam Sokool (Bin Ajwaad) landed Te Rapa’s Gasmate Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) and three Ellerslie wins among seven wins in total. Ice Kool has clearly inherited his talent from his dam and his granddam.
