‘He's a horse that could suit The Everest’ – O’Brien lands King Charles III Stakes with Mission Central as Overpass runs a brave third

Ballydoyle maestro Aidan O’Brien could have his sights set on landing a whopping payday in October’s The Everest (Gr 1, 1200m) with Mission Central (No Nay Never) after the three-year-old touched down with victory in Tuesday’s King Charles III Stakes (Gr 1, 5f) at Royal Ascot.

Bjorn Baker’s admirable seven-year-old Overpass (Vancouver) produced another consistent effort for his connections Darby Racing as he finished third, having been up with the pace throughout.

In winning Tuesday’s Group 1 sprint for the first time in his illustrious career, O’Brien was adding to a solid day all round as he sent out two winners on the opening day’s seven-race card.

What's On

Ridden by Ryan Moore, who was also winning the race for the first time, Mission Central was held up towards the rear of the near-capacity 26-strong field.

Still with plenty to do approaching the final furlong, the gelding produced a smart turn of foot inside the closing stages to join French raider Rayevka (Blue Point) on the line, forcing a photo-finish in which he was called the winner by a head.

Francis Graffard’s Rayevka was only narrowly denied having led inside the final furlong, while there was a further three-quarters of a length back to Overpass in the third-place position.

“Incredible ride. All the team around him, such a big team of people, I'm so grateful for them,” O’Brien said.

“What can I say? He's a very fast horse, he's unbeaten this year, progressed with every run.

“They went hard, which suited him. In all his races he's very forward because they don't go very fast, and he's an awful lot of speed.

“Ryan gave him a great ride, he obviously knew they were going really hard, but really motivated him inside the final furlong. I'm delighted for everyone."

O’Brien mentioned a potential crack at Randwick’s The Everest with Mission Central, whose two starts prior to Tuesday’s victory have seen him land back-to-back Listed contests.

“He's a horse that could suit The Everest at the end of the year, so a very exciting horse really,” the trainer added.

Attention turned to Coolmore Australia principal Tom Magnier, who said: "Very impressive what he did today. We have a slot in The Everest, it's a great race and it's a race we'd love to win.

“It would be great to think about it but obviously it's up to Aidan, see how the horse pulls up but it would definitely be a race that you could put on the radar for him."

Moore admitted he wasn’t 100 per cent sure on whether he had won crossing the line, but was delighted when the verdict came through on the tannoy.

"I thought I'd won but it's always hard when you're so wide and so far apart,” the rider said.

“Aidan can do anything can't he? He's a progressive horse. They went hard, he got into a nice rhythm and he just landed there, it worked out beautifully.

“I'm lucky to ride for Ballydoyle and Coolmore and everything they run this week is going to have a chance."

As for Overpass, it was another considerably solid effort from the gelded son of Vancouver (Medaglia D’Oro). With over $12.5 million in prize-money accumulated before Tuesday’s third placing, he added a ninth placing to his career record alongside ten wins – from 37 starts.

"You've got to be so proud of him, he's run absolutely amazing," Baker told ANZ. "It is so hard to win these races when you look at the competition you're up against.

"I couldn't really see him! I've got glasses but I needed binoculars! This whole experience is fantastic.

"I just said he's not quite a champion in terms of Australia, but he's our champion, and he delivered for us again. It's absolutely special to be here, and I personally want to get back competing, but he did us very proud.

"When you're from Woodville in New Zealand like me and you're training in Sydney and living the dream, we always look at the positive. We beat 23 others!”

Baker revealed he would love to come back over to Royal Ascot for another crack at his fellow training competitors in the future.

"He's a war horse to travel over,” he added. “We were always a little bit worried about the rise [at the finish], and maybe that was the difference between winning and losing.

“He didn't quite nail the gate like we thought he would today, I'm pretty confident often we get that right back home, but look, I've been beaten by two of the best trainers in the world.

“Tell you what, I want to beat them next time! In Australia we love an underdog and we'll have a try. Trust me, I haven't bought this hat for nothing!"

Overpass’ regular rider Josh Parr also reiterated Baker’s comments on the slightly slower than usual start from his mount, but was proud of his effort.

“He showed a really good spirit here today to go through those two leaders and he looked the winner there at one point,” Parr told ANZ.

“He didn't get the best break to be honest, he usually flies the barriers. Then we were just dictated to by the leader and that could very well have been the difference, but I'm very happy with his performance.

“I cannot speak highly enough of this experience. I'm so honoured to be here as a jockey and competing at Royal Ascot. We didn't get the victory that I was so desperately after, but it's been a great performance and thanks for having me.”

Francis Graffard also cut a happy man post-race and received a warm congratulatory handshake from Baker following the contest, with Baker also making a B-Line to offer congratulations to O’Brien in an excellent show of sportsmanship from the Kiwi native.

“She has an amazing turn of foot over that distance, when she came, she really came strongly – I thought it was in the bag for us. But on the post, I knew we were beaten unfortunately. She finished very strongly,” Graffard said.

“Dropping back in distance was key for me. In Dubai, she showed that six furlongs was too long for her, so five furlongs on fast ground, that was a race for her. She was in top form, she proved it today on the track – you can’t be frustrated. It’s a fantastic run and hopefully we will be able to win a Group 1 this year.”

Ding-dong battle sees 2,000 Guineas form upheld as Bow Echo narrowly denies Gstaad in St James’s Palace classic

Bow Echo (Credit: Bronwen Healy Photography)

Billed as a rematch between the English 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) quinella Bow Echo (Night Of Thunder) and Gstaad (Starspangledbanner), Tuesday’s feature Group 1 lived up to the hype as the George Boughey-trained runner narrowly held out the challenge of Aidan O’Brien’s resolute runner-up in a St James’s Palace Stakes for the ages.

Bow Echo had proven dominant at Newmarket in the 2,000 Guineas, stamping home a two and three-quarter lengths success over Gstaad to take his career record to four wins from as many starts.

However, since that contest, Gstaad had returned to his native Ireland and proved just as dominant in the Irish 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) – defeating Distant Storm (Night Of Thunder) by three lengths.

Lining up as the slight odds-on favourite for Tuesday’s Group 1, Bow Echo had a little trouble upon leaving the stalls, being hampered and finding himself towards the rear of the six-runner field.

Rider Billy Loughnane soon got his mount back in amongst rivals though and, approaching the final two furlongs, sat cruising aboard Bow Echo, seemingly waiting to pounce and clear away from the then leader and eventual third Talk Of New York (Wootton Bassett).

Sent on by his jockey, the George Boughey-trained colt soon hit the front but was made to work hard in the closing stages by the rallying Gstaad on his inside, eventually prevailing by a short-head after a photo-finish.

There was a further length and three-quarters back to Talk Of New York in third.

"I think that was the first time he's got into a proper battle," Boughey, who was landing his fourth win at Royal Ascot and first outside handicap company at the meeting, said.

"I’ve only watched it once but it was quite a scrap early doors, he was almost keen at one point, William's horse [Talk Of New York] came past and I think we'll see a better horse now that he's been in a scrap like that.

"He's done everything we've hoped; it's fine margins in this game and luckily he was on the right side of it.

George Boughey and Billy Loughnane (Credit: Bronwen Healy Photography)

"I think Billy said that the Amo [Racing] horse [Power Blue] was starting to come in his lap and he didn't want to break his stride and, I think, at Billy's own admission, he might have committed a bit sooner than he'd hoped.

"This is very much as far as this horse wants to go, I've thought that for a while and I think being able to ride him a little bit colder in a straightforward, evenly run race, hopefully we can see him continue to progress.

"It's a dream to be training horses like this, to be trusted with them and to do it with Billy makes it even more special; he's like a younger brother, he's like a friend, we chat the whole time, and to be able to have that affinity with a jockey is amazing.

"I've been lucky to have a lot of good riders ride for me but he's an exceptional talent, both on the horse, off the horse, he's meticulous in his planning and I think it's showing on the track. To be able to provide him with an unbeaten Guineas winner to come and win at Royal Ascot is as good as it gets.

"Plan A was to hopefully win the Guineas and come here and to go to Goodwood for the Sussex [Stakes]. He's taking his racing very well, he was ready to go a couple of weeks ago. He'll have had a race today, he'll know that but it's very much all systems go for Goodwood."

Loughnane was registering his third success at the royal meeting, having had a double in 2024.

"The first furlong was crucial, and I got squeezed out early," Loughnane said. "There were five of us in a line and I slightly lost my position and he got lit up. It was then trying to manage. The Amo Racing horse came back in our lap and it meant I had to move probably sooner than ideal, but his guts got him through. He's very determined to win this horse, with a great turn of foot and fantastic ability.

"You kind of have to adapt, and it was a case of getting him back relaxed and breathing again and in his rhythm, and once he found that, he was powerful. I felt a little bit of pressure coming here today on an unbeaten Guineas winner, but thankfully we managed to get the job done.

"He travelled very powerfully and has a great turn of foot. Gstaad and Ryan probably had a more economical route than we did, so we wasted a lot of ground, but he's a very talented horse and was tough towards the business end.

"Obviously there's pressure riding a horse like him, but it's pressure you want and I'm very privileged to be in a position to partner him, and I can't wait for the next couple of races to come up. It's a pinch yourself moment, and I can't thank George and the owners enough for having faith in me."

O'Brien was delighted with the effort from runner-up Gstaad, who managed to claw back nearly all of the two and three-quarter lengths deficit from the 2,000 Guineas.

"Delighted. Ryan gave him a great ride," O'Brien said. "It was a bit rough early for him but great ride. Obviously he gets it [the trip] very well and we're delighted.

"He's come forward and we're looking forward to him. We knew he was coming forward all the time and he is, it was just a little bit rough early for him and Ryan was back a little bit further than he wanted to be but as you saw, going to the line he was closing and closing but we were over the moon with him.

"I'll see what the lads want to do [re the Sussex] but we always thought he was a horse that was going to get further and I'd say he will if we ever need to step up, but he does get a mile well."

Meanwhile, Charlie Appleby, trainer of the third-placed Talk Of New York, was also excited for the future with his colt, who was taking on Group 1 company for the first time in his five-start career.

“I feel we’ve got a nice horse that is going to progress with his career," the Godolphin head trainer said. "He still showed signs of inexperience there, in the paddock he just got a bit warm – that didn’t really concern me, it’s a warm day with a hood on, sometimes that can do that to those horses.

"It was a bit rough for the first furlong or two and he just ran as though he got a bit frightened in amongst it, just latched on a bit keen there. We’re not too far off them.”

Bow Echo’s win also marked a notable double on the day for Darley’s former shuttler Night Of Thunder (Dubawi), with Ten Bob Tony having landed the card-opening Queen Anne Stakes (Gr 1, 1m).

Royal Ascot Briefing

12 for Night Of Thunder

Darley’s one-time shuttler Night Of Thunder (Dubawi) sired his 12th individual elite-level winner on Tuesday when the Ed Walker-trained Ten Bob Tony (5 g ex Hug by Dark Angel) landed a 50-1 shock win in the Queen Anne Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) at Royal Ascot. Raced by TBT Racing, the five-year-old gelding is a half-brother to five-time winner Allegedly (Wootton Bassett) being out of the winning Dark Angel (Acclamation) mare Hug, herself a half-sister to 2006 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Tie Black (Machiavellian) and Listed winner Besotted (Dutch Art). Night Of Thunder, who shuttled to Darley Australia for one season in 2016, stood the 2026 northern hemisphere breeding season at Kildangan Stud for a fee of €200,000 (approx. AU$327,770).

The Ed Walker-trained Ten Bob Tony shocked plenty of onlookers at Royal Ascot on Tuesday when running out a 50-1 winner of the week-opening Queen Anne Stakes.

Providing his trainer with a sixth success at the royal meeting, and his jockey with a fourth, the five-year-old gelding was held up at the rear of the nine-runner field for most of the contest.

Asked to improve entering the final two furlongs, Ten Bob Tony produced a sustained run under Shoemark and led inside the closing stages to beat More Thunder (Night Of Thunder) by a half-length.

There was a further head back to the front-running Opera Ballo (Ghaiyyath) in third place, while OTI Racing’s Docklands (Massaat), who won the race last year, could not manage to fire this time around and finished seventh.

“It’s just an amazing story. He was Simon Sadler’s first ever horse; he’s now got more than 50 in training worldwide, and he just won a Group 3 ten days ago. For him to turn up here and do that… Kieran gave him an absolute peach of a ride and was very, very patient. The miracle happened.

“We agreed we’d sit last and pass as many as we could in the final furlong. It's beautiful ground out there – I always think at Ascot you can get away with horses that need a bit of dig on the straight course. I was confident when I walked it that the horse would like it.

'This horse is just a legend. What's been the key? He's just a really solid horse, we rode him cold and, like it can do here at Ascot, it just fell apart in the last furlong. Kieran didn't commit him too early and saved him for a finish. He's a super kind horse - just a legend."

Meanwhile, winning rider Shoemark added: "I'm riding for a great stable, Ed Walker and his team do a superb job and they prepare these horses amazingly and there's a lot of good ones there. We thought he wanted easy ground but it's genuine good-to-firm.

"He just travelled into it so easy, I didn't think we were going over quick either so it didn't feel like there was a pace collapse, but he really did cruise into it; he's a pretty smart horse.

"It's massive, I appreciate the magnitude of Royal Ascot and to win a Group 1 in the first race on the first day certainly takes the pressure off but ultimately it's extremely special and I feel very fortunate to be a part of that team."

Record-extending 12th Coventry Stakes win for O’Brien

Great Barrier Reef (2 c No Nay Never - Gems by Haafhd) maintained his unbeaten record when giving Aidan O’Brien and Wayne Lordan victory in the Coventry Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) at Royal Ascot on Tuesday. The colt, sent off at 6-1, raced away from much of the field on the far side of centre before working into contention as the groups converged. He edged left under pressure but led inside the final 110 yards to beat Adaay Of Scarlet (Memhas) by half-a-length, with Royal Heritage (Blue Point) a neck further away in third. Great Barrier Reef was recording his third win from as many starts, having previously won a Curragh maiden by six lengths before landing the Marble Hill Stakes (Gr 3, 6f) at the same track. O’Brien said Great Barrier Reef had long been regarded as a smart colt, despite giving little away at home. “He’s a lovely horse, he won his maiden very impressive first time,” O’Brien said. “Second day, before we ran him in a Group race his work was a bit disappointing so we didn’t know what to make of it but he still came out and he won and won well so obviously he’s a horse that hides a bit at home. We worked him last week and Ryan’s horse came out the better of the two so we thought he was the horse. We always thought he was a six-furlong horse that would get seven and could get a mile next year. Wayne gave him a lovely ride, delighted really.” Lordan said Great Barrier Reef benefitted from tracking the pace on his side of the track before finishing strongly. “When he started to roll forward with me he was probably drifting a little bit left looking for a bit of company because I was out there on my own but I always knew he was running forward so I had every chance,” Lordan said. “You never know if you pass the line in front but I hit the line well. Because I was over where I was, I thought David Egan [on Bull Shark] was probably the only pace that I had to follow and I wanted to follow him and keep it simple and from halfway I started coming forward and he kept picking up all the way to the line. He feels like he hit the line well enough to think he can step up in trip.”

J-Mac swoops aboard French raider Map Of Stars

Having been narrowly denied a winner on the day in the King Charles III Stakes (Gr 1, 5f) with Rayevka (Blue Point), trainer Francis Graffard landed a victory on Tuesday’s opening day of Royal Ascot as the James McDonald-steered Map Of Stars (5 g Sea The Stars - Bateel by Dubawi) scored in the Wolferton Stakes (Listed, 1m 2f). The five-year-old gelding came from the rear of the field inside the final two furlongs and swept down the centre of the track, going on to score by half-a-length from Wimbledon Hawkeye (Kameko) and land himself a ballot-free exemption into October’s Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m). There was a further length and three-quarters back to Dividend (Kodiac) in third place. The win marked a sixth Royal Ascot success for ‘J-Mac’. "He's an absolutely beautiful horse," McDonald said. "Very grateful to James [Doyle] who gave me a good rundown on the horse and to Mr Graffard, he's obviously the Chris Waller of France! It's an amazing opportunity to ride for Wathnan. He gave me a fantastic feel, he's obviously a very good horse and James said that before the race, he said he had a hard choice to make and he said if he turns it on, he will turn it on. I'm a racing purist, I love this carnival. Two races I really love are the Queen Anne and St James's Palace, unfortunately I didn't get a ride in them but to ride here at Ascot, have a look at this place, it's magnificent. It's so elegant, so much prestige and an absolute huge honour to be here."

Kizlyar edges out Australian Bloodstock’s Defiantly in Ascot Stakes

Kizlyar (Make Believe) led home a one-two for Joseph O’Brien when winning the Ascot Stakes (2m 4f) at Royal Ascot on Tuesday. The four-year-old gelding, ridden by Joey Sheridan, was sent off at 25-1 and raced prominently and in touch with the leaders early before improving over two furlongs out. He struck the front over a furlong from home and fought on gamely to defeat stablemate and Australian Bloodstock-owned Defiantly (Kameko) by a head, with Tim Toe (Joshua Tree) two and a half lengths away in third. Kizlyar races for the H O S Syndicate and and was bred by His Highness The Aga Khan’s Studs out of the Redoute’s Choice (Danehill) mare Kisanga. He was backing up from a last-start win and gave O’Brien a notable result from a strong hand in the staying handicap. Margaret Heffernan said the result was particularly emotional, given the syndicate had been her late husband’s idea. “Today is special because I lost my husband [Andrew] 12 weeks ago and this was his week and the idea of the syndicate with the grandchildren was really his and he believed in it and he believed in Joseph so much,” Heffernan said. O’Brien said the Ascot Stakes had become the target after Kizlyar missed out on a run during March’s Cheltenham Festival. “He’s off the back of a good win last time,” O’Brien said. “We didn’t get into the Fred Winter, unfortunately! This was obviously the next target for him, and I’m delighted to win such a good race with him. I’m so delighted for Margaret and her family - they lost Dr Andrew Heffernan, Margaret’s husband, a few months ago, and I feel like Kizlyar had a little extra push in the last 100 yards. It looked like Defiantly maybe had outbattled him at one stage, but he battled back hard in the final furlong. He might be one to go abroad with - we’ll see what the handicapper does and go from there.”

Back-to-back wins for Daiquiri Bay as he lands Copper Horse

The Alan King-trained Daiquiri Bay (New Bay) made it two wins from as many starts since being gelded as he again defeated old rival Gamrai (Lope De Vega) in Tuesday’s card-closing Copper Horse Stakes (1m 6f) at Royal Ascot. Ridden by Rossa Ryan, the four-year-old gelding swooped down the outside of his rivals and battled bravely to fend off the John and Thady Gosden-trained runner-up by a head. There was a further length and three-quarters back to the third-placed Paddy The Squire (Golden Horn).

Inglis Bull Ring opens for business

Inglis’ new online sales initiative, the Bull Ring, opens for bidding at 9am on Wednesday for those registered to bid, Goodwood Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Reserve Bank (Capitalist) is the inaugural offering. Designed for the high-end bloodstock market, the Bull Ring facilitates private-style transactions within an auction environment, allowing vendors of premium stock to access competitive bidding without publicly disclosing bids or sale prices. “The Bull Ring is a product that allows high-end stock to be traded online in a similar way to how they would be sold privately," Inglis Digital Business Manager Nick Melmeth told ANZ. Melmeth said the platform had been designed to address the sensitivities often associated with trading stallion prospects and other high-value bloodstock.Four year old Reserve Bank, a three-time stakes winner and this season’s Goodwood Handicap hero, will be the first horse offered through the platform. Those registered will be able to bid from 9am on Wednesday with the final countdown starting from 4pm the following day, Thursday June 18. As the platform is private, it will be up to the discretion of the vendor and/or the potential buyer to announce results.

Caulfield Cup boost for international hopefuls

The Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) will be run for a record $6 million in 2026 as the Melbourne Racing Club unveils a series of enhancements ahead of the race's historic 150th running on October 17. The winner's share will rise to $3.3 million, while all 18 starters will now receive prize money, with horses finishing outside the top 10 earning $60,000. The move aligns the Caulfield Cup more closely with the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m), which already pays prizemoney beyond the top placings. In a further boost to the race's international appeal, the MRC has refreshed its ballot-exempt pathway for overseas contenders, adding four new qualifying races across Europe. The newly added ballot-free races are the Wolferton Stakes (Listed, 1m2f) at Royal Ascot, the Glorious Stakes (Gr 3, 1m4f) at Goodwood, the Prix de Reux (Gr 3, 2500m) at Deauville and the Ballyroan Stakes (Gr 3, 1m4f) at Leopardstown. MRC Chief Executive Tanya Fullarton said the milestone running provided the ideal opportunity to further strengthen the race's standing. "The Caulfield Cup will remain the world's richest 2400-metre handicap race supported by the increased prize money pool, which in distributing money to every starter, recognises the considerable commitment required to prepare a horse for a race of this scale," Fullarton said. "These races staged at premium European venues have been selected to provide a more current and practical pathway for British, Irish and French-trained horses with a genuine Caulfield Cup profile." Leopardstown CEO Mark Clayton welcomed the inclusion of the Ballyroan Stakes as a direct pathway into the Cup. "A 'win and you're in' initiative for the Caulfield Cup is a significant endorsement of the Group 3 Ballyroan Stakes and further enhances its international profile," Clayton said. "We hope it will encourage even greater international ambition from Irish connections, and it would be fantastic to see more Irish-trained horses travelling to Australia and being competitive on the biggest stage."

Poison Chalice heads to the Civic Stakes for Pride

Few trainers have built a reputation for rejuvenating tried horses quite like Joseph Pride, and the Warwick Farm horseman is hoping new stable addition Poison Chalice (Savabeel) can be his latest success story. Previously trained by Paul Preusker in Victoria, the six-year-old gelding will make his first appearance for Pride in Saturday's Civic Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at Randwick after two preparatory trials. While yet to win beyond benchmark grade, Poison Chalice has consistently measured up in stronger company, highlighted by a runner-up finish in the Eclipse Stakes (Gr 3, 1800m) during the spring of 2024. "Poison Chalice raced down in Melbourne, he's a nice Savabeel horse," Pride said. "He's going well, he trialled up, there's improvement to come but he should run well. He's raced up over a mile to 2000 metres, we'll kick him off at seven furlongs and see how he goes." Pride said the gelding had settled in well since arriving in Sydney, dismissing concerns about horses adapting to racing the opposite way around. "Getting them on the Sydney leg can be a bit overstated. When they come to you at the start of the preparation, he's been in work for the last ten to twelve weeks and he's done it all on the Sydney leg, and he seems to have adjusted well." Poison Chalice will be joined in the Civic Stakes by stablemate Cool Jakey (Pierro), who earned another shot at black type company after an impressive Benchmark 94 victory at his latest start.

Western Front set for more staying tests

The Lindsay Park training partnership of Ben, Will and J D Hayes is set to press on with in-form stayer The Western Front (War Decree) as the New Zealand-bred gelding chases a fifth win of his current preparation in Saturday's 2500m handicap at Flemington. Last-start winner of the Sandown Cup (Listed, 3200m) on May 31, The Western Front has enjoyed a productive campaign that began in January with fourth placings at Flemington and Pakenham before breaking through over 2025m at Cranbourne. He subsequently added victories over 2400m at Caulfield and 2500m at Flemington during April before finishing sixth in the Andrew Ramsden Stakes (Listed, 2800m). While that result appeared disappointing on paper, co-trainer J D Hayes said the stable took plenty of confidence from the performance, a view reinforced when The Western Front returned to win the Sandown Cup. The form has continued to stack up, with Sandown Cup runner-up Zibulon (Dschingis Secret) subsequently finishing second in the Brisbane Cup (Gr 2, 3200m), while Pounding (Exceed and Excel), runner-up in the Andrew Ramsden, later filled second placing in the Q22 (2100m) at Eagle Farm. "He was quite good in the Andrew Ramsden at set-weights as he was giving a lot of weight away," Hayes said. "He's rock hard fit, he stays well. Ideally, we would love to stay at 3200 (metres), but this was the next option in Victoria, and he's shown that he has trained on beautifully." Hayes said there are no immediate plans to spell the gelding while his form remains strong. "The remaining staying races through the winter are possibilities and then be the fit horse in the early part of the spring," he said. "We'll go run by run, but the plan is not to stop and hopefully he can be a bit of an ATM. They win more money in work than out of work."

Queensland campaign beckons for Regal Zeus

Mornington trainer John McArdle is using a winter campaign in Queensland to launch an early assault on Melbourne's spring carnival with talented gelding Regal Zeus. The son of Zoustar (Northern Meteor) is set to resume in Saturday's Eye Liner Stakes (Listed, 1350m) at Ipswich before a likely second-up run in the Glasshouse Handicap (Listed, 1400m) at the Sunshine Coast on July 4. McArdle's long-range target is the Memsie Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Caulfield in late August. "I'm 99 per cent sure we'll run in the Eye Liner and then the Glasshouse and if everything went according to plan then we would be the fit horse leading into the Memsie," McArdle said. The trainer said Queensland's handicap conditions made the northern campaign an attractive option. "That was the plan and the reason for heading up there was because it is a 61-kilo maximum topweight off a 54 kilo minimum, so he wouldn't be getting as badly weighted up there as he would be in Victoria." Regal Zeus will carry 60.5kg in Saturday's Eye Liner and heads into the race off a lone trial, where he finished second over 1200m at Sandown in May. "He was probably ready for a half-mile trial, but he had the 1200-metre trial, and him being him, he doesn't do anything softly," McArdle said. "The travel has tightened him up again and he hasn't left an oat since he's been up there. He's his bright usual self." The Eye Liner forms part of a strong Ipswich feature programme that also includes the Ipswich Cup (Listed, 2150m) and the Gai Waterhouse Classic (Listed, 1200m).

O’Rourke keen to uncover Predations potential

Hawkesbury trainer Edward O'Rourke is hoping patience pays off with promising two-year-old Predation (Capitalist), who resumes in Wednesday's Irresistible Pools & Spas Handicap (1250m) at Canterbury. A $110,000 Inglis Classic purchase, Predation showed ability early, winning a Rosehill trial before finishing sixth in the Kirkham Plate at Randwick last spring. O'Rourke admits the juvenile may have been rushed at that stage and has taken a more measured approach this preparation. Predation has returned as a gelding and heads to the races off two impressive Rosehill trial wins over 1030m. "Sometimes you can get away with one trial but the race didn't go to plan, he jumped a bit slow and they steadied up in front and got on heels and everything went to bits after that," O'Rourke told Racing NSW. "He's had a lot better grounding this time, everything has been straightforward and we've got to the trials and he's done everything right. We've given him plenty of time and he's continued to improve for us." The son of Capitalist (Written Tycoon) and Listed-winning mare Ygritte (Snitzel) will be partnered by Kerrin McEvoy, with regular trial riders Zac Lloyd and Rachel King both overseas. O'Rourke believes barrier one gives the youngster every chance to be competitive first-up. "It's a huge advantage, he jumps well and he has good gate speed," he said. "I'll just tell him to jump well and he'll ride him as he finds them, I don't think Kerrin McEvoy needs instructions." While expecting further improvement as the preparation unfolds, O'Rourke is confident Predation can make his presence felt. "He'll run a big race with improvement to come. He's still quite green when he gets to the front," he said. "He's an exciting horse with plenty of upside to come for the future and I'd be disappointed if he's not there fighting out the finish."

Litt eyes more success with former Godolphin recruits

Trainer Richard Litt is set to unveil another blue-blooded recruit this weekend when Aleppo Pine (Blue Point) makes his stable debut in a Benchmark 78 over 1000m at Randwick. Before that, fellow ex-Godolphin galloper Balkans (Lonhro) will attempt to add to his impressive Canterbury record in Wednesday's TAB Handicap (1200m). All three of Balkans' victories for the Warwick Farm horseman have come at Canterbury and Litt believes the five-year-old is capable of another strong performance if conditions suit. "He's pretty on the mark to do something so I don't want to waste a run if everything doesn't align," Litt told Racing NSW. "I'm a little bit on the fence, it's a big field and the track's a bit soft. The horse needs good ground, he's in at the wrong time of year, and has a big weight so I've got to put all those things together." Balkans finished a close third at Canterbury two weeks ago and will again be partnered by apprentice Siena Grima. "He's very, very well, Siena rode him beautiful last start, the race mapped out nicely and he found the line good. He's at peak fitness now and he's ready to rock and roll," Litt said. Purchased for just $30,000, Balkans has already proven a worthwhile investment. "He was only a cheapie ($30,000), he's a lovely horse and he will win a Saturday race when everything aligns for him and I hope that's this preparation," Litt said. "At the end of the day he's no world beater, there's no point protecting them. These horses have to run because they can't earn money in the box, I just really need that track to improve a bit." Meanwhile, Aleppo Pine, a $100,000 purchase for Monarch Racing, is shaping as another promising addition to the stable. The three-year-old won on debut for James Cummings, competed in Blue Diamond and Golden Slipper lead-ups and was stakes placed before later joining Lindsay Park. "We're just kicking him off over the 1000m and he's going to be a really good addition," Litt said. "I was really happy with his trial the other day. He's slotted in to our system really well, a lot better than others do. He had a bit of time in the paddock after leaving the Hayes' and he's come here and has done very well." Tom Sherry has been booked for Aleppo Pine's Randwick return, while Grima will also partner Romeo's Choice (Choistar) in Saturday's Benchmark 94 over 1200m.

Maiden juvenile winner for Brave Smash

The Tony and Calvin McEvoy-trained Pulp Friction (2 f Brave Smash - Lemon Sweet by Bradbury’s Luck) provided Yarraman Park Stud’s Brave Smash (Tosen Phantom) with another debut juvenile winner when scoring in a 1200-metre maiden on the Ballarat synthetic track on Tuesday. Ridden by Fred Kersley, the filly was easy in betting but finished strongly between runners to defeat Oman (Capitalist) by half a length, with Famous Rosy (I Am Immortal) in third. Pulp Friction was a $42,500 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale purchase by McEvoy Mitchell Racing and Belmont Bloodstock from the Lucas Bloodstock draft and races for a large group of stable clients. She is the second winner from three foals to race out of Lemon Sweet, a winning Bradbury’s Luck (Redoute's Choice) half-sister to the dam of dual Group 1 winner Historian (Choisir). The result gave Brave Smash his 40th winner for the season, a tally headed by Queensland Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m) winner Brave Monarch and stakes-placed Brave Danza, while his five stakes winners to date are headed by Group 1 winner Kimochi. Brave Smash stands at Yarraman Park Stud for $22,000 including GST..

Foundation mare Our Egyptian Raine dies aged 27

Cressfield has announced the passing of foundation broodmare Our Egyptian Raine (NZ) (Desert Sun) at the age of 27. A Group 1-winning racemare, Our Egyptian Raine etched her place among the toughest performers of her generation, highlighted by victory in the Railway Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) and a remarkable record of nine Group 1 second placings during a career spanning 48 starts. She won 10 races and was placed on another 20 occasions, adding four Group 2 victories and a Group 3 success to her outstanding résumé. Purchased by Cressfield for $900,000 as a broodmare prospect, Our Egyptian Raine became a cornerstone of the operation’s breeding program. She produced 13 foals, headed by dual Group 3 winner Egyptian Symbol (Stratum), who earned more than $1.4 million and ensured her influence would continue through future generations. Retired from stud duties in 2020, Our Egyptian Raine spent her final years enjoying retirement at Cressfield, often grazing alongside fellow racetrack star Regimental Gal (General Nediym). “Cressfield acknowledges the profound impact Our Egyptian Raine has had on the farm’s early years,” the farm said in a release. “Her toughness, consistency and contribution to the breed will be long remembered.” Our Egyptian Raine leaves a lasting legacy as both an elite racemare and influential broodmare, with her descendants continuing to make their mark on the Australian thoroughbred industry.

Tuhikaramea stable well armed for Cambridge meeting

The Tuhikaramea stable of Graeme and Debbie Rogerson and Clinton Isdale will be strongly represented at Waikato Thoroughbred Racing’s annual RDA Raceday at Cambridge on Wednesday, with the trio set to saddle 12 runners at the midweek meeting. They hold a strong hand in the Manning Investments (2000m), where Tarzador (Tarzino), Novak (El Roca) and Solidify (Redwood) are among the nominations, although the latter could be saved for Ellerslie on Saturday. Tarzador heads into the race in winning form, having scored over 1700 metres on the Awapuni synthetic late last month after placing at Cambridge, and Isdale is hopeful she can produce a similar effort. “She won really well,” Isdale said. “It was a tough run, she got taken on for the majority of the race but toughed it out nicely. She will be thereabouts.” Novak has placed at his past two starts, including when runner-up to stablemate Skymax at Cambridge a fortnight ago, and Isdale is expecting another honest performance. “He always runs a nice race,” said Isdale, who also owns the gelding. “He took off way too early last start and battled on well. He wasn’t going to go with Skymax, she is probably a bit too classy for synthetic racing.” The stable is weighing up whether to start Group 2 performer Solidify on Wednesday, but if he runs he will benefit from apprentice Tom Wigram’s four-kilogram claim, reducing his impost to 56.5 kilograms. “He seemed to handle the surface alright [in his only polytrack start earlier this month], he was just impeded by the big weight,” Isdale said. “We are 50-50 about going there with him, we may nominate him for Auckland and go there “He is not an overly big horse, so if he does run, the claim will assist.” Isdale is also looking forward to lining up Group 1 performer Domain Ace (Swiss Ace) in the Cambridge Equine Hospital (1550m), and expects improvement from his first run on the surface earlier this month, with the stable having varied his work and added blinkers. “You will see a different horse with blinkers on,” Isdale said. “He has been to the beach and he has been doing a bit of jumping as well.” Isdale also nominated Impressive Belle (Press Statement) in the Manning Investments (970m), Brutal Reality (Brutal) in the Group One Turf Bar (2000m), and Melkor (Telperion) in the TCL Earthworks (2000m) as leading chances for the stable. “Brutal Reality’s previous run on the poly was good, but she got impeded at Palmy and nearly fell. If she can run up to her previous start on the poly, she will be extremely hard to beat. “Melkor is also a nice chance. He went well the other day and got held up for a little bit.”

Legarto’s sister impresses at trials

The search for the next stable star is underway for Ken and Bev Kelso, with promising two-year-old Latoya (Proisir) catching the eye when winning an 800m trial at Avondale on Tuesday. The filly is a younger sister to five-time Group 1 winner Legarto (Proisir), who was recently sold to Yulong for A$2.8 million at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale, and Kelso has liked what he has seen from the homebred juvenile. “She’s a good doer,” Kelso said. “She's got a little bit of sass about her and I suppose in some way she's similar to Legarto, but she's a smaller version. “We were pleased with her trial today and she improved a lot from her first hit-out at Waipa.” Kelso admitted the stable was surprised by Latoya’s first trial effort but was encouraged by the improvement shown this week. “We were expecting an improvement today and she certainly did that,” he said. A raceday debut is likely in the coming weeks, although Kelso expressed frustration at the lack of opportunities for juveniles at this time of year. “Finding a two-year-old race is very difficult,” he said. “I think it’s totally ridiculous. The two-year-olds are our future, we need to have two-year-old races for these horses.” While Latoya shapes as an exciting prospect, the Kelsos are also looking ahead to spring with a strong team headed by Alabama Lass (Alabama Express), who has returned in excellent order following her summer break.“She looks fantastic. She put on about 60 kilos during her spell. Henley Park did a marvellous job with her,” Kelso said. “We haven’t ruled out going back to Australia and having another crack at the Moir Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) where she ran second and was probably a little bit unlucky last year.”

UK: Green Sense tops London Sale at £700,000 as Waterhouse and Bott strike

Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott were among the buyers at Monday night's Goffs London Sale, securing Santa Bravado (Iffraaj) for £260,000 (approx. AU$494,040) ahead of Royal Ascot.

Offered by Adrian Oliver's Stragrane House Stables, the three-year-old colt was a last-start handicap winner and has an official rating of 86 from four starts to date.

He was purchased through Waterhouse’s trusted bloodstock agent Johnny McKeever, who has enjoyed notable success sourcing European stayers and middle-distance performers for the stable.

“He's a young horse with not many runs who we felt wouldn't cost too much money,” McKeever told ANZ.

“He won very well last start and looked like a baby just starting his career. He has an entry in the Golden Gates this week but I don't think he will get in with his handicap mark. He could run in a different race or just go straight Down Under.”

Waterhouse was also on hand to provide a few words on her new acquisition, having won out in a bidding war for the colt.

“He's lightly raced and won well last time out, and the third in that race has won since,” Waterhouse told ANZ.

“He looks like a horse that will put on great condition Down Under, they often do well moving and I think he'll do well. It was the right price, but maybe his trainer was [bidding] in the front row!”

The boutique sale, staged in Kensington Palace Gardens on the eve of Royal Ascot, was topped by Group 2-winning filly Green Sense (Starman), who realised £700,000 (approx. AU$1.33 million) after a private deal was struck with American owner Randy Boyd's Boyd Racing following an initial RNA at £675,000.

Other notable transactions included Kentucky Rain (Lucky Vega), purchased by Amo Racing for £380,000 (approx. AU$722,060), and Your Song (Coulsty), who was secured for £300,000 (approx. AU$570,050) by Narvick International and Shawn Duggan.

The sale concluded with 11 of the 19 horses offered selling for gross receipts of £2.97 million (approx. AU$5.64 million), producing an average price of £270,000 (approx. AU$513,040) and a median of £250,000 (approx. AU$475,040).

UK: Trawlerman one of 11 confirmed for Gold Cup as he defends crown

Last year's Ascot Gold Cup (Gr 1, 2m 4f) hero Trawlerman (Golden Horn) will take on ten rivals as he bids to land Thursday's Group 1 contest for the second year running. The John and Thady Gosden-trained gelding was relentless from the front in a seven-length demolition of his rivals in 2025, but has not been seen since winning the British Champions Long Distance Cup (Gr 1, 2m) in October and was not certain to make the race due to a recent injury. However, the son of Golden Horn (Cape Cross) will take on the 2025 English St Leger Stakes (Gr 1, 1m 6.5f) victor Scandinavia (Justify). The Aidan O'Brien-trained colt has won both of his races so far this campaign and could provide his trainer with a record-extending tenth victory in the race. He will once again take on Rahiebb (Frankel), who was just a neck away in second place in the St Leger and who landed the Yorkshire Cup (Gr 2, 1m 6f) last month. Godolphin will also run Dubai Future (Dubawi), who landed the Henry II Stakes (Gr 3, 2m) at Sandown last month, while Australian Bloodstock send out their globetrotting stayer Al Riffa (Wootton Bassett) in what will be the six-year-old’s first foray over further than two miles.
