Angels Fury steps out on the path to redemption

One-time Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) favourite Angels Fury (Harry Angel) is out for redemption at Caulfield this Saturday when the filly looks to launch into the early part of the spring with a second successive victory.

Having cruised to an effortless win under hands and heels as the odds-on favourite in a 1000 metre Bendigo Maiden last month, the promising juvenile rises in both distance and grade at the weekend – but the bookmakers aren’t taking any chances after putting up an opening quote of $2.40.

The man responsible for sourcing the $270,000 filly at the 2025 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Louis Le Metayer of Astute Bloodstock, is convinced of her ability but is understandably wary of making any brash predictions, having been here before.

What's On

Off the back of two precocious jumpout performances, Angels Fury was backed into $1.70 on debut in the Blue Diamond Preview (Gr 3, 1000m) at Caulfield in January, only to finish last in a field of nine runners which included Clinton McDonald’s subsequent Diamond heroine Streisand (Magnus).

There were mitigating circumstances for the perplexing performance – Angels Fury knuckled shortly after leaving the gates and pulled up with mild shin soreness – but Le Metayer concedes she may not have been physically or mentally ready for such an early examination of her credentials.

Having been given an extended layoff by trainer Ciaron Maher, however, Angels Fury has returned a much more seasoned campaigner this preparation and she ably demonstrated the benefits of her break with a dominant display at Bendigo under Teo Nugent.

In-form apprentice Jabez Johnstone, who piloted the filly to an arrogant jumpout win at Cranbourne at the end of June, takes over in the saddle with the pair set to start from barrier 11 in Saturday’s $150,000 contest.

Should Angels Fury again justify favouritism, a race like the Quezette Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) at Caulfield in mid-August would inevitably occupy the thoughts of her connections but while firm in his belief that the filly has boundless potential, Le Metayer is hesitant to put the cart before the (admittedly talented) horse.

“I’ve had a few favourites finish last this year, so I’m certainly not getting carried away but it was a big relief for this filly to show what she could do last time, because we’ve always believed in her ability,” the French native told ANZ News.

“She has won all of her trials and jumpouts in impressive fashion, and it was great to see her take that form to the races at Bendigo. She’s grown up physically quite a lot since she made her debut at Caulfield, and it was pleasing to see her put that experience behind her with a very nice win last month.

“We don’t like to push our fillies too early, we prefer to take our time and make sure they’re educated properly before taking them to the races. But she was the exception to the rule, because she showed so much early talent that we really had no choice but to chase some two-year-old glory. In the end it was probably a mistake, but we’re really happy with her condition after the big break we gave her.

“Her last trial was phenomenal, so everything is suggesting she’s a very nice filly and we would expect her to be very competitive on Saturday. She’s got a phenomenal temperament and is a dream to train, so it’s exciting times. If she could win again, we’ll have a think about what we do with her in the spring but after what happened on debut, we’re obviously keen to take it nice and slowly with her.”

Aside from Angels Fury, Le Metayer nominates impressive recent triallist Eliyass (Le Havre) and fellow stakes winner Mr Monaco (Territories) as his two horses most likely to make an impact this spring.

All three are trained by Maher, with whom Le Metayer has formed a formidable association, and their prosperous partnership was strengthened this year with all seven of the purchases made under his Astute Bloodstock banner joining the ever-expanding operation.

Of the septet, Le Metayer is most excited about the Kermadec (Teofilo) filly he and Maher jointly acquired for $625,000 at this year’s Inglis Premier Yearling Sale.

The filly’s dam Turaath (Oasis Dream) is a dual stakes-winning mare who claimed the Let’s Elope Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) – in the process beating home Mystic Journey (Needs Further) – before being acquired by Rick Jamieson’s Gilgai Farm for a sizeable sum.

The second and third dams are also stakes winners, so the depth of the pedigree alone dictated that Turaath’s first foal would command a significant fee but more than anything else, Le Metayer was captivated by the filly’s appearance.

“She was the most outstanding physical in the sale, and the most impressive athlete we have seen all year,” he told ANZ News.

“Gilgai keeps producing beautiful horses so we had to pay a bit of money to get her, but I think she’s worth it. Although she looks precocious, she’s probably more of an Oaks type of filly to my eye.

“We liked her when we bought her and we like her even more now, because she has a phenomenal action. We won’t run her until she’s a three-year-old, but I definitely think she’ll be a filly to keep an eye on in the future.”

The purchase was an illustration of Le Metayer’s modus operandi of only buying well-bred fillies at the yearling sales with the scope to become valuable broodmares once their racing days are over.

It is for this reason that he opted against bidding on Angels Fury’s half-brother by the late Spirit Of Boom (Sequalo), and also explains why despite attending every major sale and scouring the catalogues for fillies that fit into his strict criteria, Le Metayer had to settle for just seven new signings (plus three more he purchased shares in).

Buying premium quality rather than purely playing the numbers game has served his boutique business exceedingly well, however, so Le Metayer is unlikely to adapt his model any time soon.

“We go to every sale with a very specific brief, so it was hard for us to buy a lot of horses this year,” Le Metayer told ANZ News.

“We only want the very best horses, but we don’t want to overpay for them. Ninety per cent of the horses we inspect probably aren’t good enough, and the remaining ten per cent are usually very expensive. So your window of opportunity to buy a good horse for a reasonable price is actually very small, but we don’t want to drop our standards.

“If you are looking for a horse from a good farm with a deep pedigree and outstanding conformation, there aren’t actually many of them up for sale each year. Talent is rare, and our agency isn’t at the sales just to clip a ticket. We’re there to find and manage talent, and only time will tell if we’ve managed to buy some talented horses this year.”

Morning Briefing

Shinn edges closer to return

Blake Shinn is set to take the next step in his comeback from injury when he rides in Friday's Flemington jump-outs, with the multiple Group 1-winning jockey booked for five mounts, including the Lindsay Park-trained War Machine (Harry Angel). Shinn has not ridden competitively since suffering a broken leg in a fall at Flemington on Melbourne Cup Day last year. Following an extended rehabilitation, he has gradually returned to trackwork and believes jump-outs are the next important milestone ahead of a race return. "Each stage has been ticked off and now we're at the next stage, jump-outs and trials," Shinn said. "I'll do Friday, then maybe one day next week. "There are trials on July 16 at Caulfield and that will determine where I kick off, whether it's the 25th or wait a week for August 1." Shinn also has a ride for the Leon and Troy Corstens and Will Larkin stable at Friday's session. The jockey was on course at Sandown on Wednesday to celebrate partner Lucy Yeomans' training success with Parvati Party (Complacent), whose victory was the young trainer's ninth since launching her stable last September. "We've only got ten in work but only three or four up and racing," Yeomans said. "That's our ninth winner, and Blake and I set a little target of trying to get double figures by the end of the season, so hopefully we can get one more winner by then and we'll be rapt." Shinn said he could return to race riding before his planned comeback date if the opportunity arose. "When I broke my neck, my first day back was at Randwick and I rode two winners and my first ride back, I won on Tom Melbourne," he said. "If it pans out, I'll have a meeting before, but I'm in a good spot and I'm getting excited as all the hard work is done. "We're at the pointy end."

Cold brew chasing fifth win in six starts

Cold Brew (Credit: Sportpix)

Cold Brew (Pierro) will chase his fifth win from his past six starts when he lines up in Saturday's Robrick Lodge Eremein Handicap (1600m) at Randwick, with trainer Will Freedman confident the gelding can overcome his racing quirks. The four-year-old has accepted for two races but will instead contest the Benchmark event after drawing barrier seven with 60kg, rather than carrying 63kg from gate 13 in the Midway. Chad Schofield has been booked to ride. Freedman admitted Cold Brew remains a work in progress despite his consistent results. "I don't know if the penny will ever drop with him, it certainly hasn't dropped yet," Freedman said. "But he obviously has good ability and he should be hard to beat again on Saturday." The gelding rounded out his previous preparation with three consecutive wins before being purchased by the Mustr Racing micro-syndication group on Freedman's recommendation. After a setback delayed his return and a series of uninspiring barrier trials, the trainer feared he had led the new owners astray. "I convinced them to buy Cold Brew but before he trialled last time in work, he was a bit sore and we had to turn him out again," Freedman said. "Then we finally got him back into work, he was trialling miserably. I was worried about how the horse was going but it is amazing how they know the difference between trials and races. "Cold Brew came out and ran really well first-up then he won last start. There are not many horses that can win four from five." The stable will also saddle up Horizons (The Autumn Sun) in the Asahi Super Dry Handicap (1800m), with the mare aiming to improve on her last-start third behind Alice Mae (Kermadec) over the same course and distance. "I think we have struck the right race for Horizons," Freedman said. "With the rail out (9m), this mare is a natural on-pace runner so if she can find the lead and get her own way in front, she will be hard to run down. "She got taken on last start and it just told the last 50m but with that run under her belt and staying at 1800m, she should prove hard to beat."

Miraval Rose resumes in Monash Stakes

Group 2 winner Miraval Rose (Grunt) will launch her spring campaign in Saturday's Monash Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) at Caulfield, with trainer Grahame Begg using the weight-for-age sprint as a stepping stone towards bigger targets. The rising six-year-old has not raced since finishing fourth in the Hot Danish Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Rosehill in November after a minor setback ruled her out of an autumn campaign. The daughter of Yulong Stud based sire Grunt (O’Reilly) has been prepared with three lead-up trials and jump-outs, including a 1000m jump-out win at Pakenham late last month. Begg acknowledged Saturday's 1100m is short of her optimum distance but said it fits into a broader spring plan. "She had a little bit of a setback, nothing major, and that's why she didn't race in the autumn," Begg said. "We've brought her up nice and steady, but she's not really well suited on the ground. "She's trialled good, she's prepped up good, but there was nothing for her, so that's why we've spaced her trials. "She's OK on the soft, but hopefully we get a fairly good rest of the week, while the 1100 metres is probably a bit short of her best distance. "It's probably not ideal, but it's a matter of getting a run under her belt and then she can push on to the Bletchingly after that. "We're trying to get a bit of fitness on the other ones late in the season and then she might be able to go on to the P B Lawrence, or something like that, or there's those mares' races in the early spring." Miraval Rose enjoyed a successful spring campaign last year, winning at Moonee Valley before adding the Rose Of Kingston Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Flemington. Harry Coffey will partner the mare for the first time on Saturday.

Racing’s Night Of Champions Expanded For 2026

State and national awards will be presented on the same night when Racing’s Night of Champions 2026 is held at Royal Randwick on Thursday, August 27. Presented by the NSW Racehorse Owners Association, the black-tie gala will recognise leading equine, training and riding performances in New South Wales and across Australia for the 2025-26 season. NSWROA president Tony Mitevski said the expanded format would bring together the best of Australian racing. “Racing’s Night of Champions will showcase the highest achievers in our sport on one stage, making it a truly unique occasion for the Australian racing industry,” Mitevski said. “What makes our sport special is its accessibility. Racing’s Night of Champions is one of the few elite sporting awards events where everyday fans can attend and celebrate alongside champion trainers, jockeys, owners and industry participants.” Racing Australia chief executive Paul Eriksson said the national awards would add further depth to the evening. “On behalf of Racing Australia, we are delighted to be sharing the stage with Racing’s Night of Champions,” Eriksson said. “All 11 national award categories, including the Australian Racehorse of the Year, are shaping up to be very hotly contested with voting well underway.” The event will be held in the Winx Stand from 6.30pm and broadcast nationally on SKY Thoroughbred Central. TAB has been announced as Gold Sponsor for the 13th consecutive year, with Racing NSW, SKY Thoroughbred Central, Australian Turf Club, Inglis, Wild Oaks and Baumgartners returning as sponsors. Tickets are available at nswroa.com.au.

Administrator Begins ATC Role

Racing NSW has announced the commencement of Morgan Kelly’s role as administrator of the Australian Turf Club following the NSW Court of Appeal’s decision on June 19 to uphold Racing NSW’s appointment. Racing NSW has also established an advisory committee to support Kelly in the role. The committee comprises three current member-elected ATC directors, Tim Hale SC, Caroline Searcy and Bernie Brookes AM, alongside Racing NSW board members Michael Crismale and Simon Tuxen. Kelly will undertake a comprehensive review of the ATC’s operations, financial position and governance arrangements, with the review to identify opportunities to improve efficiency, strengthen performance and implement best-practice governance and operational standards. Racing NSW said the advisory committee had been established to provide management continuity and industry experience, while the inclusion of three current member-elected directors would ensure members’ perspectives remained represented as decisions are made regarding the future direction of the club. Racing NSW will also provide funding and cash-flow support to ensure the ATC continues to meet its financial obligations, including the continuation of Racing NSW’s guarantee of the ATC’s existing loan facilities. Funding will also be provided for urgent maintenance and capital projects, including repairs to the Royal Randwick escalators, which Racing NSW said had not been operational for more than five years. Racing NSW said the new structure would not affect the club’s day-to-day operations, with scheduled race meetings, events and member services to continue as normal. The ATC’s chief executive and staff will remain responsible for daily operations under the administrator’s oversight.

Sixth for St Mark's Basilica

St Mark's Basilica (Credit: Coolmore)

St Mark's Basilica (Siyouni) recorded his sixth Southern Hemisphere-bred winner when two-year-old filly Gentle Touch (2 f ex Soft Kiss by Bernardini) opened her account over 1200m at Belmont on Wednesday. Trained by Simon Miller, the $80,000 Magic Millions National Weanling Sale purchase settled off the speed under Willie Pike before finishing strongly to score by a long head at her second start, following a close fourth on debut over the same course and distance. Bred by John Muir's Milburn Creek, Gentle Touch is the third winner from as many runners out of the Bernardini (A.P Indy) mare Soft Kiss, an imported half-sister to Grade 3 winner Den's Legacy (Medaglia d'Oro). The victory continues a promising start for the first Southern Hemisphere crop of European Horse of the Year St Mark's Basilica, whose Australian-bred winners include unbeaten stakes winner Aristopolos and stakes performer West Coast. St Mark's Basilica will stand the 2026 breeding season at Coolmore Australia for a fee of $38,500.

39 for King’s Legacy

King's Legacy (Redoute's Choice) recorded his 39th Australian winner of the season when promising colt Hostwin King (2 c ex Prada Miss by Northern Meteor) made it two wins from two starts with victory over 1200m at Canterbury on Wednesday. Prepared by Tommy Wong and ridden by Louis Beuzelin, the colt settled outside the leader before proving too strong late to defeat the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Elio (Ole Kirk) by half a length. Hostwin King had impressed on debut over 1000m at Kembla last month and has now earned almost $50,000 from his unbeaten start to racing. A $210,000 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale purchase from Eureka Stud, Hostwin King is out of the stakes-placed Northern Meteor (Encosta de Lago) mare Prada Miss, who has now produced three winners from her first three runners.

Tennessee Bound remains unbeaten with fifth straight victory

Written Tycoon (Iglesia) mare Tennessee Bound stretched her perfect record to five wins from as many starts with a dominant performance in the Benchmark 74 over 1200m at Sandown on Wednesday. The Ciaron Maher-trained four-year-old, ridden by apprentice Jabez Johnstone, controlled the race from the front before sprinting clear to score by two-and-a-half lengths, following her first-up victory at Caulfield last month. Assistant trainer Jack Turnbull said the stable would continue to progress the mare gradually despite her impressive rise through the grades. "Now that we've won this today, we can probably poke up to a BM84, there's one in two weeks. Or we can wait a month, there's a standalone meeting at the Caulfield Heath, I believe," Turnbull said when speaking to Breednet. "We'll have a chat to Gerry and go from there. "For now, I don't think we need to expose her, but I'll have a chat to Ciaron. It's one step at a time… obviously, she's got the trajectory to be a stakes horse. "For the next race or two, we would remain in Benchmark Handicap grade."

Shamelia Kirk targets Castletown Stakes finale

Promising filly Shamelia Kirk (Shamexpress) will attempt to finish her juvenile season on a high in Friday's Listed Castletown Stakes (1200m) at Otaki before heading for a spell. Trainer Robbie Patterson said the speedy daughter of Shamexpress (High Chaparral) had thrived since her dominant maiden win at Trentham and expected conditions to suit. "She's done very well since she last raced, I've just had to keep her happy," Patterson said. "She's super fit and a heavy track won't worry her, she's got that action that allows her to skip over it and the ground will hinder others more than her. "She's a lovely horse to deal with, she's dedicated to her job, but she always grabs the bit and wants to run along. She's hard to gallop in company because she's so fast and does a lot of work on her own." Patterson said the filly would head to the paddock after Friday regardless of the result, ruling out a quick backup in the Ryder Stakes (Listed, 1200m) later this month. "It's only two weeks apart so she will go out for three weeks in the paddock and then come back for the spring and see where she's at and how far she will get," he said. "She is a very fast filly and whether she'll get a mile, on breeding she should but you never know, and there's still some nice targets for three-year-old sprinters all through the season." Shamelia Kirk is raced by breeder Wayne Darling's EVB Ltd operation, which also raced Patterson's dual Group 1 winner Coventina Bay (Shamexpress). Craig Grylls replaces apprentice Jim Chung aboard the filly, while Patterson also expects Yaldy Time (Time Test) to be hard to beat in the Jennian Homes Maiden (1200m) at Otaki after an unlucky second at Woodville. At Hawera on Saturday, Patterson will saddle Capaci (Tivaci) and Belles Boom (U S Navy Flag) in the three-year-old 1600 metre event. "I can't split them, they're both nice horses and going very well," he said.

Bourbon Proof relishing fresh start with Bradley

Bourbon Proof (Credit: Kenton Wright (Race Images))

Bourbon Proof (Justify) will make his first start for Michelle Bradley when he lines up in Saturday's Waipu Cup (1600m) at Ruakaka after transferring from the stable of Stephen Marsh in search of a change of scenery. The dual winner has spent several weeks settling into Bradley's beachside operation, with regular trips to the beach forming part of his preparation. "He has come up here for a change of environment to try and get him back on his game," Bradley said. "I am happy enough with him, he has been working really well. He has been down to the beach a bit and is settling in well." While pleased with his progress, Bradley admitted the gelding may improve with the outing after not racing since May. "It's been a while between runs so hopefully I haven't been too soft on him," she said. Saturday marks Ruakaka's first meeting in six months, something Bradley has been eagerly anticipating. "It has been a while," she said. "There is no travel, which is fantastic, and I am just hoping they all perform well and it ends up being a nice, sunny day." Bradley also expects last-start Ellerslie winner Iridescent (Wyndspelle) to be competitive again in the 1200m sprint after bypassing another race to remain fresh. "I am really happy with her," she said. "I thought I would keep her fresh and run her here on her home track. She is bouncing, she is really well. I would like to think she will be right up there again." Watermelon Sugar (Satono Aladdin) will be looking to improve on three consecutive fifth placings after drawing barrier five, while Arabella (Belardo) and Dubai Rockin (Pride Of Dubai) resume in another 1200m contest. Bradley believes both runners will benefit from the outing, while Bosch (Pentire) contests the Whangarei Gold Cup (2100m). "Bosch has got a nice weight but he hasn't drawn a good barrier for a number of starts now, which is quite frustrating," Bradley said. "He loves his home track and we have just got to make a plan and see how we run." Bradley also confirmed talented juvenile She's No Saint (Prague) is progressing well toward next month's Group 3 Northland Breeders' Stakes (1200m), with the filly set to have one lead-up run before her first black-type assignment.

Renaissance Lady Tops Tattersalls Opener

Renaissance Lady (Credit: Tattersalls)

Godolphin’s Renaissance Lady (Pinatubo) topped the opening session of the Tattersalls July Sale when bought online by Ace Stud for 500,000 gns (approx. AU$1,012,000). The unraced three-year-old filly was bred by the late Sheikh Mohammed Obaid and is out of Reem Three (Mark Of Esteem), making her a half-sister to Group 1 winners Triple Time (Frankel) and Ajman Princess (Teofilo), the latter the dam of Commonwealth Cup (Gr 1, 6f) winner Inisherin (Shamardal). She is also a half-sister to Rosaline (New Approach), dam of European Champion Three-Year-Old Miler Rosallion (Blue Point). Tally-Ho Stud was underbidder on the session-topping filly, whose immediate family also includes Ostilio (New Approach), Cape Byron (Shamardal), Third Realm (Sea The Stars) and Captain Winters (Lope De Vega). Ace Stud also secured Wild Angel (Too Darn Hot), a winning four-year-old mare offered in foal to Pinatubo, for 400,000 gns (approx. AU$810,000). She is a three-quarter sister to three-time Group 1 winner Space Blues (Dubawi) and a half-sister to Shuruq (Elusive Quality), dam of Grade 3 winner and Grade 1-placed Antoinette (Hard Spun). Ace Stud’s Paul Curran told Tattersalls that Renaissance Lady was “something of a collector’s item”, adding that pedigrees of her calibre were “just so hard to buy”. Godolphin also sold Enchanted Queen (Ghaiyyath) to Clacton Thoroughbreds for 180,000 gns (approx. AU$364,000), while Pier House Stud’s Ger Morrin, signing as Kelly Equine, bought Verse Of Love (Siyouni) for 180,000 gns.Turnover rose 12 per cent on the corresponding session last year, while the average increased 34 per cent. The sale continues on Wednesday.

It's In The Blood

Cellarmaster (NZ)

ANZ News

From one of New Zealand breeding’s most storied families - the famed “Belle Line” - comes Cellarmaster (Bivouac), the brood’s latest stakes winner after taking Saturday’s Winx Guineas (Gr 3, 1600m).

His tail female line’s history reads like a weighty chapter of New Zealand breeding itself; at times told in sepia, with a dash of heartache, but always with touches of gold and some tales of astonishing glory.

Cellarmaster was bred by Marie Leicester, who’s 88, and still conducts her breeding affairs from her retirement village near Cambridge, which she says is a well-laid out place.

“I was watching Cellarmaster in my villa, and I was yelling at him all down the straight,” she tells It’s In The Blood of his thrilling late dive for victory. “It’s good here - we’re a bit spread out - so I can yell and scream at the TV as hard as I want to.”

Leicester, not to sound patronising, remains as sharp as a whip and full of zest for the caper. Breeding is the mental - sometimes infuriatingly mental - puzzle that helps keep her mind buzzing.

She spends a lot of time organising her seven broodmares - six of whom are of the Belle line - who are kept at Haunui Farm. As with Cellarmaster and his a younger half-brother by another Darley stallion in Anamoe (Street Boss), this often involves sending mares across the Tasman.

“It’s something that keeps the mind active, and I love every minute of it,” she says. “In fact, I sent a half-sister to Moet Belle (Cellarmaster’s dam) across to Anamoe on the plane on Monday night - My Annie Belle.”

Leicester, daughter of famed New Zealand breeders and Belle line founders James and Annie Sarten, still attends the races regularly and enjoys the odd small bet on one she’s bred - “three dollars the win and two dollars the place” - aside from that never-ending punt of putting mares to stallions.

Remembering the lengthy “Belle” chain that leads us to Cellarmaster is another favourite mental pastime. The story’s as old as she is, but she barely misses a beat.

Its beginning came with Belle Star, a daughter of an imported German stallion who was already a sixth generation New Zealand mare.

That trail had begun with the importation of an 1844 Australian called Emma, who’s simple name was outstripped by her deeds at stud in her new country, where she threw three stakes winners including two who claimed the CJC Derby Stakes, the modern New Zealand 2000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m).

Skip ahead almost a century and six Kiwi-bred mares, and we see Leicester’s father come into contact with the line via that 1926 throw Belle Star.

“Dad used to look after her on his farm for a butcher in New Plymouth,” Leicester says. “One day he said to Dad, ‘You’ve been looking after her for years - do you want to use her for a year?’”

James Sarten put her to the British-bred stallion Foxbridge (Foxlaw) in 1937, and … nothing happened. But after that miss he tried again the following year and the result was Belle Fox - Cellarmaster’s seventh dam.

“Belle Fox won five races, I think. It was during the War years, so things were pretty scarce,” Leicester says.

The mare indeed won five, from 18 starts, but achieved greater fame in the breeding barn. She only had five foals but one was the outstanding Supreme Court (Fair’s Fair), who won 16 races including the 1956 edition of what’s now the Group 1 Railway Stakes (1200m).

Belle Fox also threw Belle Rosa (Instinct), a stakes-placed city victor who threw the great 1960s mare Star Belle (Summertime), who won 12 stakes races. This included four modern Group 1s across both sides of the Tasman, and in the summer and autumn of 1966-67 she became the only filly to claim the “Great Northern” Triple Crown of the Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m), Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) and St Leger (Gr 2, 2800m).

“Mum and Dad spent the spring of 1967 in Melbourne, where Star Belle won the Liston, the Craiglee and the Turnbull,” said Leicester, who was busy at home with three small children at the time, but recalls the superb mare also placing in the Underwood (Gr 1, 1800m) and Memsie stakes (Gr 1, 1400m).

Belle Fox also left the city-winning Belle Time (Summertime), Cellarmaster’s sixth dam and one of the greatest progenitors among many in this line.

Belle Time threw four Group winners including two at the top level. One of those was 1970 drop Asgard (Hermes), who won six Australian principal races headed by what’s now the ATC Spring Champion Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m).

The other was Honey Belle (Better Honey), Cellarmaster’s fifth dam, a remarkable animal who won seven New Zealand black type events including what’s now the Thorndon Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) in 1970.

Honey Belle only threw two Listed placegetters among 11 foals, but was one of Leicester’s favourites. James Sarten left her to his daughter in his will when he died in 1981, and she lived out her days on the family farm, where Leicester’s husband Nelson conducted his Romney sheep-breeding and grazing business.

“Nelson bred the sheep and I bred the horses,” Leicester says of her husband, who died 12 years ago.

“Honey Belle lived on our farm, and she ruled the roost. All the farm dogs were scared to go into her paddock. If they did, she’d just kick them out.

“She was a real character. She lived until she was 32, and the night she died, I went out and I was sitting with her. She didn’t want me to touch her, but I had to be sitting beside her. If I went to go, she’d whinny, so I had to stay. She was an amazing horse.

“Then when we were digging her grave, all of the farm dogs sat around in the shape of a horse shoe - sat on their haunches and watched us bury her. It was amazing to see the respect they all had for her.”

Honey Belle’s contribution to Cellarmaster came through one of her Listed placegetters Imperial Belle (Sovereign Edition), who won three times in Melbourne. She threw only one Listed placegetter, but also 1987 filly Empress Belle (Sir Tristram), Cellarmaster’s third dam - and second dam of another Leicester-bred elite winner, Romanoff (Belardo).

“She was a bigger mare thanks to Sir Tristram,” Leicester says, “and she’s left that extra size in her progeny, and as a result put the size into Cellarmaster.”

Imperial Belle emulated her mother’s longevity, throwing four stakes horses from 16 foals. She bore Cellarmaster’s second dam Meleka Belle (Iffraaj) as her last foal at the grand old age of 22, which helps explain why an impressive 50 years is spanned by Cellarmaster’s first four dams.

The chain hit top gear again with Meleka Belle, who might have only won one of six starts but threw as her first foal the great Melody Belle (Commands). The 14-time elite winner and dual New Zealand Horse of the Year (among seven Champion or similar titles) was Leicester’s greatest product, and helped her to the Breeder of the Year award in her home country.

Meleka Belle - who won Broodmare of the Year - also threw Tutakaka (Tavistock), who won two Australian Listed races and ran sixth in the 2021 VRC Derby (Gr 1, 2500m).

And his year-older full sister was Moet Belle, Cellarmaster’s dam.

“I like the Tavistock breed, and they were doing very well at the time,” Leicester says. “Some friends of mine had a share in Tavistock, so I used their share for the mating, and then the horse (Moet Belle) had to go to the sales and I bought her back.”

Thanks to her star half-sister, Moet Belle cost a hefty $NZ300,000 at Karaka. Then came one of few regrets for Leicester.

“She got badly hurt in a stable accident when she slid over and got badly cut. She got better, but I should never had let her go to the races, because she wouldn’t go through the pain barrier again,” the veteran breeder says.

Moet Belle had only two, unplaced, starts before she was sent to the breeding barn, and she’s made a far better first of things there so far, with a stakes winner from her first foal in Cellarmaster.

Leicester is stumped for the first time in recalling this journey, on why she chose Darley freshman Bivouac for Moet Belle’s first mating. But she had enough confidence in him to shelve one of her old rules.

“I’d normally put old mares to new stallions and vice-versa. But I liked Bivouac’s performances, and I thought he could get the mare started nice and early, because of his two-year-old form,” says Leicester.

“And Cellarmaster was a lovely foal. I remember seeing him at a couple of days old, and he was a curious foal,” she says. “He’d come up to you, and he loved having his backside scratched. He’s just taken a bit of time, but he’s looking pretty good now, and hopefully he’ll have a big spring.”

There’s just a little dab of inbreeding in the gelding. Both his sirelines start with Northern Dancer (Nearctic), who’s at 5m, 5m x 5m. He accounts for 15.2 per cent of the blood while Danehill (Danzig), who’s doubled in Bivouac, has 15.6 per cent.

And American stallion Gone West (Mr. Prospector) is at 5m x 5m, as sire of Bivouac’s second damsire Elusive Quality, and as the grandsire of Maleka Belle’s father Ifraaj.

The mares underpinning things are Natalma (Native Dancer), who has 11 spots from generations six to nine, and Selene (Chaucer), who has nine in the eighth and ninth removes.

And the influential American mare Somethingroyal (Princequillo) is at 8m, 9m x 8m, 7m, doubled in Elusive Quality and Meleka Belle, via her two most famous sons Secretariat and Sir Gaylord each time.

Nearco (Pharos) takes the stallion honours with 16 spots, one more than his son Nasrullah and Native Dancer (Polynesian).

Overall, Leicester still pinches herself over the success of the Belle family, which can also count Anamoe as a member, since his fifth dam is Cellarmaster’s sixth one, Belle Time.

“My father said to me when I first kept asking him for a horse, ‘Look here my girl, you’ll have two things before anything - bills and disappointments’,” she says with a laugh.

“You do get disappointments, but I’ve had a lot of fun and I’ve enjoyed every moment.

“The Belle family has been one of the better ones in New Zealand, and I’m very proud of them all. It’s been a very good family for a very long time.”
