Winnasedge gives Cliff’s Edge breakthrough stakes winner

It’s been a little while coming, and his opportunities haven’t been vast, but the stakes winner has arrived that Bombora Downs stud hopes will spark the interest to back their belief in their stallion Cliff’s Edge (Canford Cliffs).

Winnasedge, a first-cropper for his rising 12-year-old sire, claimed Saturday’s Sir John Monash Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) at Caulfield to end a tantalising wait for Bombora and the four-year-old’s connections, after his two previous Group placings amid 16 starts.

Cliff’s Edge, who won two Group 2s and two Group 3s from 30 outings, has only had 22 runners from three seasons of starters.

This comes amid a neat 50 per cent winners to runners after essentially only two seasons of runners, since only two starters came in his debut season of two-year-olds, and with most of his stock hitting the track at three.

Cliff’s Edge’s first crop is tracking at 55.55 per cent, with 10 winners from 18 starters, while his second has provided just four runners so far, for one win.

And as a Danehill-free stallion - who’s also the only son of Canford Cliffs (Tagula) standing in Australia - Cliff’s Edge makes strong outcross appeal at his 2026 service fee of $6,600, says Bombora Downs owner Christoph Bruechert.

“It’s early days still and he’s not had that many runners, but I do think he’s a good stallion,” Bruechert told ANZ News.

“He did enough with his first few runners for me to think he’s a good horse. Whether or not we get to find that out is probably out of my hands at this point, but the only thing holding Cliff’s Edge back is opportunities.

“At one stage he was running at 66 per cent winners to runners for his first crop, which is good going. Now it’s at 55 per cent, which is still good going.

“There’s lots of stallions who get good opportunities and in large part the mares make the stallion. Cliff’s Edge probably hasn’t had enough runners to make me really think this, but in my guts I think he’s one of those horses who upgrades mares. He’s had very limited opportunities, but he’s done a good job.”

Cliff’s Edge joined Bombora Downs in the third of his six stud seasons so far, after two years at the now defunct Cornwall Park. After covering just 15 mares in his first two springs at the Mornington Peninsula farm, he served 23 in 2024 at $3,300 - and at a fertility rate of 90 per cent. The success of his earliest runners led to a fee doubling last spring, when he covered 17 mares.

While he’s still only had three two-year-old runners in total, first-croppers including Winnasedge, Escarpa and Verona Rupes - all now city winners - were quick to hit their straps on debuting as spring three-year-olds.

“They’ve taken a little bit of time to mature, obviously, and the market’s hard on that. But he’s getting them over the right distance. His winners have pretty much all been between 1000m and 1600m, mostly around the 1200m mark, so that’s the distance our market seems to like.

“The market does like them precocious. We can’t say his stock have been terribly precocious, but they’re worth the effort.

“I’m a big believer in winners to runners, and with what he had early on, he’s been ticking that box. At one stage he had nine winners from about 13 starters. Most stallions in their first crop struggle to get 50 per cent.”

Cliff’s Edge debuted as a May two-year-old, and scored three of his stakes wins at three, ranging in distance from Caulfield’s Manfred Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) to Moonee Valley’s Alister Clark Stakes (Gr 2, 2040m). Verona Rupes has hinted at the stallion’s versatility as his only winner beyond 1600m, also scoring over 2040m at Moonee Valley.

Bruechert’s farm operates at the lower end of the budgetary scale, with six sires whose “primary function” is to service the mares of those stallions’ owners.

But he expects that first stakes victor Winnasedge will spark an increase in interest from commercial breeders in his sire for the coming spring.

That will bump up further if the gelding - who’s now won six of 16 starts including four in Melbourne city class - can score another black type win in the race identified by his trainer Nick Ryan for his next start, the Bletchingly Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Caulfield on July 25.

“There’s two markets - the commercial market and then not much else after that,” Bruechert said. “The breed-to-race market has been diminishing over the last 20 years, to the point where there’s not a lot of it left, and the commercial market is extremely rigid. You don’t have to be far off the radar to be off the radar.

“But having a stakes winner should help Cliff’s Edge’s commercial appeal. I’m expecting a few bookings this week because of that.

“Plus, he’s never been expensive. We’re not giving him away, but I’d rather have the mares than the dollars.

“He’s got a bit more to do to attract more commercial interest. But from a breed-to-race point of view, he looks like one of the best horses on offer around the place, from a value for money perspective.

“And I would’ve thought that for commercial breeders, if they’ve got a mare and they haven’t decided which stallion to send him to, and they don’t want to spend much money, I think he’s worth a punt.”

Bruechert said the “exceptionally well-mannered” Cliff’s Edge stamped his stock, physically and mentally.

“He’s a bit deceptive in size,” he said. “He’s a bit over 16 hands, but he’s neatly put together and quite well balanced, and doesn’t look so big.

“His progeny are in same mould - neat horses - which is what I personally like.

“He’s got a great temperament, he’s great in the shed and good in the paddock - he’s just a cool dude to work with. Anyone on the farm can go up and catch him.

“And his progeny, from the dealings we have with them up until yearling stage, they’re in the same sort of mould.

“He’s a good looking horse and his babies can run. There’s nothing to not like about him as far as I’m concerned.”

Bruechert said Saturday’s stakes victory for Winnasedge had brought a satisfying piece of validation for the faith he’d had in his farm’s leading stallion.

“It’s a good start, so I’m very pleased with that. To do what he’s done off the numbers he’s had has been pretty damn good,” he said.

“Right from his first runners, I have felt pretty confident about the horse, though I was starting to think, ‘When’s it going to happen?’

“I do believe in him, but I’m only one man, so I’ve got to get other people to agree with me. But results like Saturday’s should help.”

Inglis opens 2027 entries off the back of a 2026 series defined by buyer depth, international spend and graduate performance

Entries have opened for the 2027 Inglis Yearling Sales Series, with breeders having until August 14 to nominate yearlings for next year’s four-sale schedule.

Inglis will again stage Classic at Riverside Stables from February 7 to 9, Premier at Oaklands from February 28 to March 2, Easter at Riverside on April 4 and 5, and the HTBA Yearling Sale at Riverside on April 22.

The call for entries follows a strong 2026 yearling sales season for Inglis, whose live yearling auctions generated turnover of $279,790,500 with a yearling average of $166,443 and an average clearance rate of 82.7 per cent across their series.

The 2026 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale was headed by the $3 million Extreme Choice colt out of Pretty Brazen, offered by Lime Country Thoroughbreds, while Easter recorded its highest-ever average at $456,748. Inglis said the sale again underlined its position at the top end of the Australasian yearling market, with 26 yearlings selling for $1 million or more and 48 making at least $500,000.

Classic produced turnover of $57,906,000, its sixth consecutive year above $50 million, with 601 yearlings sold at an 85 per cent clearance rate. Premier grossed $69,373,000, making it the second-best Premier sale on record, while HTBA produced turnover of $3,611,500 and an 86 per cent clearance rate.

Buyer depth was a defining feature of the 2026 series. Classic and Premier each recorded 57 buyers per 100 horses sold, Easter recorded 62, and HTBA reached 71. Across the series, 55 vendors grossed $1 million or more, 81 vendors grossed $500,000 or more, 26 individually listed buyers spent at least $2 million and 58 buyers spent $1 million or more.

International activity was also a major part of the result, with overseas buyers investing $50,129,500 across Inglis yearling sales and 136 individually listed international buyers represented.

Inglis Bloodstock chief executive Sebastian Hutch said the company’s team would work with breeders and vendors over the coming months to place yearlings in the most suitable sale.

“It’s been fantastic seeing so many vendors enjoy incredible results in 2026 but now it’s all about working with breeders on the 2027 sales and ensuring we do everything in our capacity to see more clients enjoy even better results in 2027,” Hutch said.

“We have been afforded fantastic opportunities by breeders, over the past few seasons in particular and while we are always looking to do better, the recent results have been hugely satisfying for our team.”

Nine for Stay Inside

Quick Release (2 g ex Zing by Zoustar) became the ninth winner for Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Stay Inside (Extreme Choice) when breaking his maiden over 1200m at the Sunshine Coast on Sunday. Trained by Matthew Hoysted and ridden by Jag Guthmann-Chester, the gelding settled near the tail of the field after jumping from a wide barrier before unleashing a strong finishing burst to score by a head over Metal Boss (Pierata), with Raging Raider (Under The Louvre) another neck away in third. A $300,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast Horses In Training Sale purchase from the draft of Kenmore Lodge, Quick Release is the first foal out of the stakes-placed Zoustar (Northern Meteor) mare Zing, a half-sister to Group 3 winner Crafty Irna (Starcraft) from the family of Group 1 winner Zirna (Deputy Governor). Stay Inside has now sired nine individual winners from his first crop. The Golden Slipper-winning son of Extreme Choice will stand the 2026 breeding season at Newgate Farm for a fee of $66,000 (inc. GST).

Waller Stars Set For Randwick Trials

Autumn Glow (The Autumn Sun) and Aeliana (Castelvecchio) headline a strong team of Chris Waller-trained spring contenders scheduled to trial at Randwick on Friday. Waller said he prefers to have his carnival horses forward early rather than risk over-training them later in the campaign. “I like to be well ahead, it suits me to get them up early rather than over-training them later,” he said. Autumn Glow and Aeliana are expected to have two trials and likely an exhibition gallop before resuming in August. “They are both great,” Waller said. “They both had a gallop on Saturday morning and James [McDonald] has been coming in to ride them.” Autumn Glow, the favourite to be named Horse of the Year, is being prepared to resume in the Winx Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Randwick on August 22. Waller will then decide whether she heads towards The Everest (Gr 1, 1200m) or the King Charles III Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m), both at Randwick on October 17. Aeliana is being aimed at the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2000m) at Flemington on October 31, with Waller suggesting she could resume in the Memsie Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Caulfield on August 29 in a bid to keep his mares apart. Lady Shenandoah (Snitzel), Autumn Boy (The Autumn Sun), Ohope Wins (Ocean Park), Barnavara (Calyx), Wootton Verni (Wootton Bassett) and comeback stayer Soulcombe are also set to trial. Waller said Lady Shenandoah had matured during her spell, while Ohope Wins could be suited by the Turnbull Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at Flemington. Lazzura (Snitzel), Campione D’Italia (Snitzel) and Fireball will be given more time before trialling.

Brown Pair Back From Break

Cliff Brown’s Group 1 performers Sepals (Calyx) and Von Hauke (Savabeel) have returned to Melbourne to begin preparations for spring campaigns. The pair have been spelling in Queensland since finishing second and third respectively in the Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m) at Eagle Farm last month. They arrived back in Melbourne during the week and are set to resume work on Monday. “They spelled well,” Brown said. “I went and saw them a couple of weeks ago, at Newington Farm and they were great. It was a long campaign, a heavy track last start, but they’ll kick back into on Monday and we’ll go from there.” Brown said plans remained fluid for Group 1 winner Sepals, with a possible Sydney trip for the King Charles III Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) under consideration, while the Champions Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) at Flemington during Melbourne Cup week is a longer-term option. “The Champions Mile in Cup week if he gets the mile, but we’ll just have to see how he comes up,” Brown said. “Maybe the King Charles, but there’s a lot of nice horses going there and I thought a lot of the four-year-olds might go to The Golden Eagle.” Brown said Von Hauke could also be suited in Sydney. “I reckon Von Hauke could be a good Epsom horse under the handicap conditions, over the mile, it would be good,” he said. Brown said Sepals, who has had only 13 starts, remained open to further improvement, while rising seven-year-old Von Hauke was still in strong order.

Defarzio Dazzles On Debut

Defarzio (Zousain) made an impressive start to his career when scoring by more than five lengths in the LAB Plumbing Maiden Plate (1000m) on the Ballarat synthetic track on Sunday. The Lindsay Park-trained juvenile was sent out a short-priced favourite against older rivals and gave his supporters little cause for concern. Ridden by Jye McNeil, Defarzio travelled strongly before bursting clear inside the final 200 metres to defeat Points For Effort (Blue Point), with Vain Beauty (Acrobat) third. Bred and sold by Rheinwood Pastoral, Defarzio was bought by Lindsay Park Racing and Dean Hawthorne Bloodstock for $150,000 from the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale. He is a half-brother to stakes winner Upper Limits (Exosphere) and is the second winner out of Defar (Wanted), a placed half-sister to Group 2 winner Nurse Kitchen (Savabeel). The family also includes New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Hades (Zabeel). Rheinwood Pastoral also sold a Written By (Written Tycoon) colt out of Defar at this year’s Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, with John Foote Bloodstock securing him for $120,000. Defarzio became the sixth juvenile winner this season for Widden Stud’s Zousain (Zoustar), who has sired 100 winners in four countries this season. His progeny are headed by Group winners Catch The Glory and Verzain. Zousain is the leading third-crop sire by winners and stands at Widden Stud in New South Wales for a fee of $22,000.

Cowboy Breaks Drought For Cambridge Pair

Cambridge trainers Josh King and Maija Vance recorded their first win in partnership when Cowboy (Reliable Man) took out the Northland Business Systems Handicap (1200m) at Ruakaka on Saturday. The victory ended a 65-start New Zealand drought for King, a former Queensland jockey and trainer who moved across the Tasman last season. “It’s the longest streak I have ever been without a winner,” King said. “It is one of those things where it takes a fairly long time to build a stable and start from scratch again.” King initially trained in his own right before Vance joined him in partnership, and she said the breakthrough was especially satisfying given the work required to get Cowboy back to the races. “It was very cool that we got our first win together with that horse as well because we got him when he was retired and Josh has done a lot of work on his feet to get him sound,” Vance said. “He had been retired without having a gallop when he was four, he just couldn’t stay sound, and he had been through a couple of people.” Vance said King’s experience with similar issues in Australia had helped the stable manage Cowboy, with their farrier Bruce also playing a key role. “To get him to the races was a massive win and to get a win with him is even better,” she said. The win was part of a successful day for the family, with Vance’s parents, Bob and Jenny, winning the following race with Nicconi County (Nicconi). King and Vance have recently bought a 15-acre property near Cambridge Racecourse, with 32 boxes and 22 paddocks, and have about 20 horses in work. They also added a Reliable Man (Dalakhani) filly and a Mr Mozart (Snitzel) colt at last month’s New Zealand Bloodstock National Weanling Sale.

Allpress Makes Winning Return

Champion jockey Lisa Allpress made a winning return to race riding at Hawera on Saturday, guiding the Kevin Myers-trained He’s Lucid to victory in the CLAAS Harvest Centre Taranaki (1400m). Allpress had been sidelined for 18 months after a pre-race incident at Trentham in January last year, when her mount reared and fell on her leg, breaking it in three places. The injury followed a broken vertebra suffered in a fall at Riccarton two years ago, with Allpress requiring multiple surgeries during a difficult recovery. “The first surgery went well, they put a rod in my leg and some screws, but about eight weeks later they knew it wasn’t really healing properly,” Allpress said. The senior rider said a later procedure by a leg trauma specialist in Wellington had finally allowed the healing process to progress. “Since I have had that plate I have felt the healing start to happen, and that wasn’t until the end of February this year,” she said. Allpress had initially planned to return on August 1 at Riccarton, but brought that date forward after being offered the ride on Spencer in Saturday’s Opunake Cup (Listed, 1400m) at New Plymouth. On advice that she should have a raceday ride before returning at stakes level, she booked two mounts at Hawera. “By the time I got to the races I was pretty shaky, I was nervous, but once I started getting my gear ready and had the usual comradery in the jockeys’ room and had a few laughs, I settled down,” Allpress said. The comeback could hardly have gone better, with He’s Lucid winning at her first ride back. “I can head to the races next week and feel a whole lot more settled,” Allpress said. Allpress said the support of family, friends and the wider racing community had been crucial throughout her recovery. “I really appreciate all the support from people both in and out of the industry, it has been phenomenal,” she said.

Caspar Fownes sealed his fifth Hong Kong trainers’ championship at Sha Tin on Sunday, while Jerry Chau claimed the Tony Cruz Award for leading homegrown jockey. With one meeting remaining in the 2025-26 season, Fownes holds an unassailable lead on 69 wins, ahead of Danny Shum on 64 and Mark Newnham on 60. The 58-year-old previously won the trainers’ title in 2006-07, 2008-09, 2013-14 and 2020-21, and has now trained 1,235 winners in Hong Kong. “It’s massive, very relieved, happy - lots of love to my family for pushing me with this one,” Fownes told HKJC. “It’s special. Newnham Reaches Hong Kong Century

Invincible Ibis (Hellbent) delivered Mark Newnham his 100th Hong Kong winner when scoring a commanding victory in the Poinsettia Handicap (Class 3, 1600m) at Sha Tin on Saturday. Ridden by Zac Purton, the four-year-old gelding was well supported after recording two wins and three placings from his first five starts in Hong Kong. He justified that confidence with a strong win, powering clear to defeat Lovero (Lord Kanaloa) by one and three-quarter lengths in 1:34.97. Fortune Boy (Contributer) finished third. The victory strengthened Invincible Ibis’s claims for the Hong Kong Classic Mile (Listed, 1600m), the opening leg of the Four-Year-Old Classic Series on February 1. “He showed today that he’s capable of coming through the field, which he needs to do, because he can’t keep coming around them as he has done on his previous two starts,” Mark Newnham said. The gelding’s rating should rise enough to secure a place in the Classic Mile, although he expects him to have another run before then. Invincible Ibis was bought by Mark Newnham Bloodstock for NZ$425,000 from Kilgravin Lodge’s draft at the 2023 NZB Ready To Run Sale. He had earlier been pinhooked by Kilgravin Lodge and Waikato Bloodstock from the Widden Stud draft at Inglis Classic for AU$80,000.

Northern Hemisphere winner for Extreme Choice

Australian-bred favourite Primetime Emmy (2 f ex Princess Emmy by King’s Chapel) made an impressive winning debut in the Prix de Lisieux (6f), a newcomers' contest for two-year-old fillies at Deauville on Sunday.

The second-last runner to enter the barriers, Primetime Emmy jumped cleanly but was caught wide before taking up a prominent position. Ridden by Mickael Barzalona for Francis-Henri Graffard, she travelled strongly before asserting in the closing stages and raced clear to defeat Amnesia (Showcasing) by two and a half lengths, with Divina Fe (Calyx) a short head away in third.

Graffard revealed the venture was driven by owner-breeder Matthew Sandblom, a shareholder in Extreme Choice, who wanted to demonstrate the stallion's ability on the international stage.

"The owner-breeder Matthew Sandblom, who loves Extreme Choice, wanted to prove that his stallion is a champion. He is already in Australia, so he gave me the challenge of receiving two Northern Hemisphere-bred fillies.

“They arrived from Australia in early spring, but they took a while to digest the journey over. But this one recently, she was really picking up. She looks really well and her work was really pleasing me at home, so it's good.

"Over the distance of 6f, I think she will be very interesting and I think I have a lot of improvement to come with her, so…"

Bred by Kingstar Farm and raced by Hollymount Stud France, Primetime Emmy is only the second Northern Hemisphere runner for Newgate Farm stallion Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt). She is the eighth winner from nine runners out of the stakes-winning King's Chapel (King Of Kings) mare Princess Emmy, whose progeny include Chairman's Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m) winner Thurlow (Sebring) and Anzac Day Stakes (Listed, 1400m) winner Three Kings (Sebring).

It remains relatively uncommon for a Northern Hemisphere-bred horse foaled and raised in Australia to be sent to Europe to race. The venture reflects Sandblom's confidence in Extreme Choice and his belief that the stallion's progeny can compete at the highest level internationally. Extreme Choice, whose progeny boast the highest stakes winners-to-runners ratio of any sire in the Southern Hemisphere, will stand the 2026 breeding season at Newgate Farm for a fee of $385,000 (inc. GST).

Two for St Mark’s Basilica

Thesecretadversary (3 c ex Too Soon To Panic by Gleneagles) became the second individual Group 1 winner for Coolmore stallion St Mark's Basilica (Siyouni) with a determined all-the-way victory in Sunday's Prix Jean Prat (Gr 1, 1400m) at Deauville on Sunday.
