Chilly Girl pictured as a weanling with her dam I Got Chills (Credit: Supplied)

Chilly Girl (Trapeze Artist) may have been one of the youngest horses at Rosehill on Saturday, but as we touched on yesterday, the most interesting number on her pedigree page belonged to her mother.

The Rosebud Stakes (Listed, 1100m) winner is by Trapeze Artist (Snitzel) and out of I Got Chills, the former speedy General Nediym (Nediym) mare who won two Listed races before chipping a knee and training off. I Got Chills was foaled in 2003 and was around 20 when Chilly Girl arrived in October, 2023.

What's On

More strikingly, Chilly Girl was the last foal of a mare who had already enjoyed a long and productive career at stud. Racing and breeding records show I Got Chills had produced nine winners from nine runners before Chilly Girl came along; when the filly won the Group 3 Widden Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) on debut in January, she became winner number ten and her dam’s first stakes winner.

There is something satisfying about the best arriving last.

It is also a useful catalyst for a question which confronts breeders at the start of every season and yearling buyers at every sale: how much should we care about the age of the dam?

The first thing to acknowledge is that age matters.

A 2020 Australian study of reproductive records from three major thoroughbred farms analysed more than 27,000 coverings involving 12,922 mares between 2000 and 2017. Although the study was principally examining inbreeding and reproductive outcomes, mare age was one of the variables considered and increasing age was associated with a significant decline in foaling success.

That won't surprise any stud manager or reproductive veterinarian.

For the breeder deciding whether to cover a 14, 16 or 18-year-old mare, reproductive risk has to be overcome before market risk even enters the conversation. An older mare may take more cycles to get in foal, require greater veterinary management or be more likely not to produce a live foal at all.

Those are genuine costs and genuine risks for the breeder.

But the yearling buyer considering the dam’s age is standing at a very different point in the process.

By the time the produce of an older mare walks out of the box at Magic Millions, Karaka or Inglis, the mare has already got in foal, carried the pregnancy, delivered the foal and raised an individual that has survived and developed well enough to be catalogued for a commercial yearling sale.

Much of the reproductive risk associated with maternal age has already been carried by the breeder and overcome.

The buyer is not purchasing the prospect of getting an older mare pregnant, he or she is purchasing the horse standing in front of them, that may or may not, look like an old mares foal.

That raises another question: what actually constitutes an “old” mare in a modern Australian yearling catalogue?

A snapshot of some east coast 2026 catalogues is instructive, if not definitive.

A spot-check of exactly 100 yearlings, with 25 lots systematically spaced through each of the major east coast sales; Magic Millions Gold Coast Book 1, Inglis Classic, Inglis Premier and Inglis Australian Easter catalogues, produced a median maternal age of ten years at the time the yearling was foaled. The mean was almost identical at 9.95 years.

The individual sale medians were nine at the Gold Coast and ten at Classic, Premier and Easter. Nineteen of the 100 sampled yearlings, 19 per cent, were out of mares aged 13 or older.

The sample was deliberately spread through each catalogue rather than taken from a contiguous run of lots, and each sale contributed the same 25 horses. It should therefore be read as a four sale catalogue snapshot rather than a census, or as a catalogue size weighted estimate of the national yearling population. The four catalogues themselves ranged from 472 lots at Easter to 980 in Gold Coast Book 1.

Even with that qualification, the composition is instructive. A 13-year-old mare is older than the dam of the typical yearling in this sample, but 13-plus produce are hardly rare: roughly one yearling in five came from the older mare cohort.

That matters because anything outside the norm gives a potential buyer another reason to hesitate.

Weanling and yearling purchasing is often described in terms of selection and shortlists despite it often being more of a cull. An elimination rather than a selection process. The buyer is not selecting 20 horses from 980 for their shortlist, they are culling 960.

A yearling's value can shift dramatically according to how many people happen to want it when it walks into the ring. A factor that causes one or two prospective purchasers to put a line through a horse before inspecting it seriously is not merely academic. It can be measured in bids.

Purchasing is often described in terms of selection and shortlists despite it often being more of a cull

Research into Australian yearling pricing is interesting. A study published in Applied Economics used data from ten auctions conducted by Australia's two major auction houses, Inglis and Magic Millions, to examine the factors influencing yearling prices. It found that the racing records of parents and siblings were obviously important to valuation, alongside other factors such as maturity and sale level.

More interestingly for the older mare question, the population itself illustrates a problem with treating age in isolation.

The mares which remain in commercial breeding populations into their teens are not necessarily representative of the mares that began breeding years earlier.

A poor producer can disappear from a broodmare band at eight or nine. A mare who is stakes performed, beautifully bred, fertile, already a good producer or carrying an increasingly valuable family may be afforded opportunity after opportunity.

The older population has therefore been selected.

And that creates something of a paradox.

Biologically, the mare is ageing. Commercially and genetically, however, the mares allowed to grow old in good broodmare bands may be among the better members of the original population.

So when somebody asks whether an old mare is less likely to produce a good horse, there are really two questions. Does the ageing process reduce her reproductive efficiency? The Australian evidence says yes. And does reaching 13-years-old suddenly make the resultant foal standing in front of you at a yearling sale a lesser racing prospect? That assumption is much harder to support.

Chilly Girl is the latest to illustrate why.

Chilly Girl (Credit: Bradley Photos)

I Got Chills did not reach her final foal with a production record littered with failures. She had been doing something breeders spend an enormous amount of money trying to achieve: producing racehorses.

Her first nine runners were all winners. Chilly Girl made it ten from ten and, finally, supplied the black type.

Whatever effect age was having on I Got Chills biologically, and excluding high expectations that follow high service fees paid, her own record was supplying another piece of evidence for anyone assessing her produce.

She could still produce a runner.

Perhaps, then, the most useful question to ask about an older mare is not simply; How old is she? Rather, what has she produced lately?

Have her last three foals raced? Have they won? Were they sound? Were they good sized horses? Has there been an obvious deterioration in her produce? Has she continued to get in foal regularly? Are there long barren periods? Are her foals still getting into catalogues?

Those questions tell us more about the particular mare than her age alone.

Australasian pedigrees provide plenty of reminders.

Triassic (Tights) was foaled in 1990 and produced So You Think (High Chaparral) in 2006, making her approximately 16 when one of the finest horses of the modern Australasian era arrived. So You Think became a ten-time Group 1 winner across Australia and Europe.

Whilst the probability of a good horse may decline. It does not disappear

Eight Carat (Pieces Of Eight) offers an even better lesson. Foaled in 1975, she produced Octagonal (Zabeel) in 1992 at around 17. He became Australian Horse of the Year and another ten-time Group 1 winner. The following year, at around 18, she produced another Group 1 winner in Mouawad (Zabeel).

Those horses do not prove that mare age is irrelevant.

Pointing to Octagonal and concluding that mares do not age would be rather like pointing to a 60-year-old marathon runner and concluding that humans do not age.

What they demonstrate is something more useful.

Whilst the probability of a good horse may decline. It does not disappear.

And that distinction matters in bloodstock because buyers are not attempting to purchase the average horse. They are trying to identify the exception within their budget..

There is, incidentally, a reason we have used 12 as a rough dividing line for old and young in this discussion.

Australian tax rules (TR 93/26) include special valuation provisions for horses held as breeding stock and, under those rules and depending on the circumstances and method applied, an older breeding mare can ultimately be carried at a nominal value.

It is an accounting treatment rather than a judgment on the mare's genetic or commercial worth, and there are different circumstances in which the rules apply, but it offers an interesting contrast.

On paper, the old girl may eventually be written down to almost nothing. The question for the breeder, and eventually the yearling buyer, is whether her ability to produce a racehorse has declined to anything like the same degree.

That is why, for the purposes of this discussion, mares aged 12 and younger may be usefully compared with those aged 13 and older.

But chronological age is still only one number. Foal number also deserves consideration.

A 15-year-old mare producing her fifth foal after entering stud late is not necessarily the same proposition as a 15-year-old producing her twelfth.

Nor are all matings equal.

A mare may begin her breeding career highly commercial and visit expensive proven stallions, then slide down the stallion ranks as her commercial appeal declines. If her later progeny prove inferior, some of what looks like an age effect may actually be a sire quality effect.

The reverse often occurs too. A mare establishes herself as a serious producer and earns access to better stallions as she gets older.

Previous progeny, foal order, fertility history, stallion quality, physical type and the mare’s own performance all interact with age.

That is why, in an ideal analysis would eventually compare thousands of Australian mares against themselves: their progeny produced at 12 and younger against their progeny produced at 13 and older, while adjusting for the stallions visited and the order of those foals.

It would be equally questionable to treat 13 years old as a "best before" date

The 24 hours since Chilly Girls victory hasn't allowed for such research and data may not be detailed enough to put a clean percentage on that question which should make us cautious of arguments for and against age alone.

It would be wrong to say mare age does not matter simply because a Chilly Girl, a So You Think, a New Approach (Galileo) or an Octagonal existed.

It would be equally questionable to treat 13 years old as a "best before" date.

For a breeder, the thirteenth birthday might sensibly signal that the hurdle is getting higher. The mare's reproductive history, recent foals and the economics of the mating deserve greater scrutiny.

For a buyer, however, much of that hurdle has already been jumped.

The foal exists. It has grown. It has been catalogued. And now it is standing in front of you.

At that point maternal age should sit alongside conformation, movement, sire, foal order, sibling performance and every other piece of information on the page — not necessarily above them.

Every market likes simple rules because simple rules are efficient.

First foal.

Young mare.

Proven mare.

Old mare.

But whenever a market turns a useful piece of information into an inflexible rule, there is the possibility that value is being left behind.

Chilly Girl arrived at the end of I Got Chills' breeding career, not the beginning.

The old mare had already given breeders every reason to believe she could produce a racehorse. What she had not produced was one as good as herself, a curse many a good racemare will face.

Then came her last chance.

The numbers tell us there is reason to become more cautious as a mare grows older but they do not tell us to stop looking or stop breeding.

There may be less life in the old girl than there once was. But, as Chilly Girl has just reminded us, there can still be plenty.

Morning Briefing

Australia

Debut winner for Stay Inside

Harry Lime (Credit: Bradley Photos)

Well-bred colt Harry Lime (Stay Inside) produced a promising debut performance to win the 1200-metre maiden, prevailing by a head under Regan Bayliss. The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained three-year-old had shown ability in two recent trials and finished strongly to score narrowly. “He’s only going to get better over further this horse,” stable representative Neil Paine said. “He probably didn’t handle the track, but still won, which tells you he is a nice horse.” Harry Lime was purchased for $320,000 by Waterhouse / Bott and Kestrel Thoroughbreds from the Newgate Farm draft at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale. He is the second winner from three foals to race out of stakes-winning Whispered Secret (High Chaparral) and a granddaughter of Group 3-winning Matras (Zabeel).

Waller to decide on Winx team

Champion trainer Chris Waller will wait until later in the week to decide how many stablemates will be joining his top mare Autumn Glow (The Autumn Sun) in the Winx Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m). The five-year-old three-time Group 1 scorer jumped out at Rosehill on Saturday alongside five others, four of which are likely to be nominated for next weekend's contest. "Whatever is ready to run, will run, so there will be a lot. It's just such an important starting point," Waller said. "Not many of them could probably beat a horse like Autumn Glow, but when you've got horses like Beiwacht, anything is possible. They're all well prepared. They've been trialling for a number of weeks now. Today was an important stepping stone for me and the horses just to see exactly where they are seven days out from a very big race day." James McDonald partnered Autumn Glow, while Beiwacht (Bivouac), Lady Shenandoah (Snitzel), Buckaroo (Fastnet Rock), Barnavara (Calyx) and Autumn Boy (The Autumn Sun) worked together also. "She is ready to go," McDonald said. "She seems to be working really well. Every bit of work she has done, she has come on, worked a bit sharper and sharper."

Northam hoping mare can turn form around

Nova Centauri (Credit: Sportpix)

Scone-based trainer Rod Northam is hoping that Nova Centauri (Rubick) can get back to winning ways on Monday when she tackles the Coolmore Handicap (1000m) at his local track. The five-year-old mare has two wins at Scone already alongside a Highway success at Rosehill, but hasn't fired in her last three outings. “She looked the best she’s ever looked and didn’t run up to what she’s been showing,’’ Northam told Racing NSW. “So I changed things around a bit, I was training her from a paddock last time and she looked awesome. She wasn’t walking the box and looked great so I’ve got her back in the barn walking the box and hoping she runs well.”

Changingoftheguard set for Premier’s Cup return

Sydney Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winner Changingoftheguard (Galileo) will begin his spring campaign in Saturday’s Premier’s Cup (Gr 3, 2000m) at Randwick, with Tim Clark booked to ride. The Kris Lees-trained eight-year-old tuned up for his return with an exhibition gallop at Newcastle last week. Changingoftheguard capped his autumn campaign with victory in the Sydney Cup under Jason Collett and is being prepared for another tilt at the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) at Flemington on November 3.

Wine Dark Sea secures Melbourne Cup qualification

Australian-owned stayer Wine Dark Sea (Ulysses) strengthened his Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) credentials with victory in Saturday’s Geoffrey Freer Stakes (Gr 3, 1m 5.5f) at Newbury. Trained by Harry Charlton, the lightly raced four-year-old defeated Tabletalk (Camelot) and multiple Group 1 winner Dubai Honour (Pride Of Dubai), with the victory satisfying the ballot conditions required for the Melbourne Cup. Australian Bloodstock bought into Wine Dark Sea with the Melbourne spring in mind following two handicap victories in Britain, with Saturday marking his first attempt in stakes company. The gelding is scheduled to enter quarantine on September 9 before travelling to Melbourne. His qualification provides Australian Bloodstock with another Melbourne Cup prospect after last year’s seventh-place finisher Al Riffa (Wootton Bassett) was recently ruled out of a return trip to Australia. Wine Dark Sea is by Ulysses (Galileo), winner of the Eclipse Stakes (Gr 1, 1m 2f) and Juddmonte International Stakes (Gr 1, 1m 2.5f) and is the first foal out of unraced Sea The Stars (Cape Cross) mare Ajwibah.

12 for Hellbent

Hawea (Credit: Race Images)

Hawea (3 f ex Idlewild by Lonhro) became the 12th individual stakes winner for Hellbent (I Am Invincible) when taking out Sunday’s Chittick Family Fillies Classic (Listed, 1100m) at Taupo. Ridden by Wiremu Pinn, the Graham Richardson and Rogan Norvall-trained filly defeated Phillyjean (Hello Youmzain) by a length with a further 1.6 lengths back to the third-placed Latoya (Proisir). Having run third behind Lara Antipova (Russian Revolution) in the Matamata Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m), the win came as a thrill for Richardson. “It was amazing to watch, she came from last and has beaten a good field, it’s a big thrill,” he said. “She is a very good filly that has had a few problems. Mark Brooks fixed her in the gates, she was stood down and we couldn’t get her in at one stage. I think she got a fright in the Breeders’ Stakes, so she’s been with Mark and I thank him very much for that. He’s got her right and we’ve always had a lot of time for her.” Out of the Lonhro (Octagonal) mare Idlewild, Hawea is half sister to five-time winner Idyllic (No Nay Never) and stakes runner Romilly (So You Think) – with the latter also being trained by Richardson and Norvall. The stable went to $300,000 to purchase Hawea out of Wentwood Grange’s draft at Karaka in 2025. Hellbent is standing at Yarraman Park for a fee of $55,000 (inc GST).

Debutant impresses in smart company at Taupo

First starter Fortunato (Per Incanto) showed he could have what it takes to be a spring star in the three-year-old ranks with a stunning performance to take out the Poverty Bay Turf Club (1100m) at Taupo on Sunday. The Guy Lowry and Leah Zydenbos-trained son of Per Incanto (Street Cry) looked to have quite a task on his hands on debut against a handy field of his own age and sex, despite bringing an unbeaten record in two trials to race day. Fortunato shoved his way into clear air at the 200 metres and put in several huge bounds to hit the front in the shadows of the winning post to defeat Honorable (Proisir) by 0.2 lengths. “It was a great start to his racing career and he is a really nice horse going forward,” Lowry said. “He was just starting to have a think after his last trial, so we have had to take him along slowly, but he is going to make a beautiful four-year-old, so we just have to give him a bit of time. He has shown plenty at home and there have been raps on the horse. There is always the Hawke’s Bay Guineas and the 2,000 Guineas, but is it too soon, we will just have to see.”

International

Four for Churchill

Coolmore’s former shuttler Churchill (Galileo) secured his fourth individual elite-level winner on Saturday when the George Boughey-trained Survie (5 m ex Sotteville by Le Havre) took out the Christophe Clement Turf Stakes (Gr 1, 12f) at Saratoga. Ridden by Manuel Franco, the UK raider produced a good turn of foot to lead late on for a comfortable three-quarter lengths success over Minaret Station (Instilled Regard). Program Trading (Lope De Vega) finished a further half-length away in third place. Bred by Franklin Finance Sa, Survie was purchased by Coolmore's M V Magnier for 1.9 million guineas at last year's Tattersalls December Mares Sale and races in the colours of Michael Tabor. A half-sister to winner Barfleur (Rajsaman), she is the third foal out of the Listed-winning Le Havre (Noverre) mare Sotteville, herself a sister to Group-placed winner Crisolles. Churchill, who shuttled to Coolmore Australia between 2018-2024, stood the 2026 northern hemisphere breeding season at Coolmore Stud for a fee of €15,000 (approx. AU$24,510).

FR: Godolphin land Justify colt for €1.25 million

Godolphin secured the top lot on the opening night of Arqana's August Yearling Sale after going to €1.25 million (approx. AU$2.04 million) to land a well-related Justify (Scat Daddy) colt. Bred by Eddie Irwin’s Rockhart Trading at Marlhill House Stud in County Tipperary, Ireland, the colt went through the ring as part of Charles Briere’s Fairway Consignment and is the first foal out of Coolmore's homebred Listed-winning mare Joie De Soir (Fastnet Rock). “He’s an extremely nice horse with beautiful conformation,” Anthony Stroud told the Racing Post. “He moved very well and he’s from an excellent farm in Marlhill Stud, who’ve produced many good winners. Of course, Justify is doing so well and he’s a wonderful stallion. We’re very glad to have acquired him.”

FR: Arqana August Sale opens with 20 per cent turnover rise

The opening session of Arqana’s August Yearling Sale generated turnover of €13.966 million, up 20 per cent on the corresponding session last year. A total of 71 yearlings were sold at an average of €249,393, with almost 79 per cent of lots offered changing hands. Away from the session-topper, two yearlings sold for €800,000. Peter and Ross Doyle secured Lot 43, a Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj) colt offered by Baroda Stud, for €800,000 on behalf of Magne Jordanger’s Stall Perlen. The colt is out of Group winner and Classic-placed Just Pretending (Giant’s Causeway), who has also produced black-type performers Visage (Galileo) and Persia (Galileo). A Frankel (Galileo) filly offered by Écurie des Monceaux also realised €800,000, with Paddy Twomey bidding online on behalf of Bond Thoroughbred. Lot 63 is out of Cheveley Park Stakes (Gr 1, 6f) winner Lightening Pearl (Marju) and hails from the family of Japanese dual Group 1 winner Satono Crown (Marju). Écurie des Monceaux also offered Lot 56, a Siyouni (Pivotal) filly purchased by Ghislain Bozo’s Meridian International for €550,000. She is out of Group winner and Group 1-placed Lady Frankel (Frankel) and comes from the family of Group 1 winners Lope De Vega (Shamardal) and Barnavara (Calyx).

FR: Golden Tickets go off at August Sale

Arqana has marked its 20th anniversary with a Golden Ticket initiative at its August Yearling Sale. Ten of the 80 yearlings offered during the opening session will be randomly selected to carry a €30,000 Golden Ticket, with the purchaser receiving the credit provided the lot is sold in the ring. The €30,000 voucher can then be applied towards a second purchase made during the August Sale. The draw to decide which lots carried the Golden Tickets took place under the supervision of a judicial officer on August 15, with the identity of each Golden Ticket lot remaining confidential until it entered the ring. 71 of the 80 lots catalogued were offered with eight of the 10 Golden Tickets on offer this evening, each worth €30,000, awarded. Among the winners was Bond Thoroughbred, the buyer of lot 57, that made use of its ticket immediately, purchasing lot 63, knocked down for €800,000 through Paddy Twomey.

189 for Frankel

Baroud (3 c ex Tisa River by Equiano) provided Juddmonte sire Frankel (Galileo) with his 189th individual stakes winner when landing the Prix Guillaume d’Ornano (Gr 2, 2000m) at Deauville on Saturday. Ridden by Pierre-Charles Boudot, the colt defeated Daryzan (Zarak) by two lengths with a further length back to the third-placed Proof (Dubawi). Bred by Blue Diamond Stud Farm, Baroud was purchased by Oliver St Lawrence Bloodstock for €780,000 during Book 1 of the Goffs Orby Yearling Sale and is raced by Imad Alsagar. A half-brother to winners Enchanting (Blue Point) and Bolt Action (Kessaar), he is the third foal out of the Equiano (Acclamation) mare Tisa River, herself a half-sister to Breeders' Cup Mile (Gr 1, 8f) winner Order Of Australia (Australia). Frankel stood the 2026 northern hemisphere breeding season at Banstead Manor for a fee of £350,000 (approx. AU$669,130).

US: Imagination to stand at Mountain View Farm

Multiple Grade 2 winner and Grade 1 performer Imagination (Into Mischief) will enter stud at Mountain View Farm in New York after the Santa Anita Sprint Championship Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) on September 27 and Breeders’ Cup Sprint (Gr 1, 6f) on October 31. Bred in Kentucky by Peter E. Blum Thoroughbreds, five year old Imagination is by perennial leading sire Into Mischief (Harlan’s Holiday) out of Grade 3 winner Magical Feeling (Empire Maker). He was purchased for US$1.05 million by Donato Lanni, acting for SF Bloodstock, Starlight Racing and Madaket Stables at the 2022 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. Magical Feeling has also produced Monmouth Oaks (Gr 3, 8.5f) winner Occult (Into Mischief) and stakes winners Exulting (Tapit) and Magical (Tapit).

Churchill mare Survie lands Grade 1

European import Survie (Churchill) secured her first Group One success when landing the Christophe Clement Stakes (Gr 1, 12f) at Saratoga, just 13 days after winning the Glens Falls Stakes (Gr 2, 12f) on her US debut. Trained by George Boughey for Michael Tabor, the five-year-old was held up at the rear under Manny Franco before producing a powerful late run to defeat Minaret Station (Instilled Regard) by three-quarters of a length, with Program Trading (Lope De Vega) finishing third. The victory earned Survie an automatic berth in the Breeders’ Cup Turf (Gr 1, 12f) at Keeneland on October 31. The daughter of former Coolmore shuttler Churchill (Galileo) was purchased by M V Magnier for 2.2 million guineas at the 2025 Tattersalls December Mares Sale.
