Guest House banishes Slipper curse at Rosehill

Exciting colt Guest House (Home Affairs) emphatically showed he was suffering no Golden Slipper hangover as he validated Coolmore’s investment in him with a stunning victory in Saturday’s San Domenico Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) at Rosehill.

In a breathtaking return at the scene of his autumn triumph, Guest House became the first winner of the Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) to take out the three-year-olds’ San Domenico since Tierce (Victory Prince) in 1991.

What's On

Not only that, he set a new track record of 1:02.41 – shaving a tenth of a second off the old mark held by Westicaro (Westbridge) since February, 2007 – in a display co-trainer Mick Price called “amazing”.

The hulking bay indicated he had come back as perhaps an even more formidable unit than in his stellar two-year-old season, as he appeared to well and truly lay to rest any fears of the Slipper winners’ “curse”. The past five colts to claim Australia’s greatest stallion-maker have failed to win again, with the last to score a subsequent victory being 2012 hero Pierro (Lonhro).

Bookmakers certainly responded with a firm vote of confidence in the son of Home Affairs (I Am Invincible), who also ran third last campaign in Caulfield’s Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m).

He shortened to $3 favouritism for his next stallion-maker, the Golden Rose (Gr 1, 1400m) on September 26, and to $4 favouritism for another one, the Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Flemington on October 31.

In between those two, Guest House was also wound in to become a $13 equal third favourite for The Everest (Gr 1, 1200m) on October 17, behind Ka Ying Rising (Shamexpress) at $1.50 and Tempted (Street Boss) at $9.

Coolmore, who stumped up a reported $30 million to make Guest House one of their future stallions following his Slipper success, hold a slot for The Everest, and the colt looks likely bound for that race, where he’d carry a light three-year-old’s impost of just 53 kilos under the weight-for-age scale.

Certainly on Saturday’s evidence – with a topweight of 58.5 kilos under set weights and penalties – it would be madness not to take a shot at the $20 million prize-money on offer for the Randwick feature.

Well ridden by his Slipper partner Zac Lloyd, Guest House jumped strongly from an awkward gate seven of eight and, while he over-raced early, Lloyd was able to restrain him and slide to the fence as the field quickly split into two packs.

Guest House pushed up to sit behind odds-on favourite Blue Door (Stay Inside) who set a heady pace under Tommy Berry, and for a time in the straight the colt looked in danger of not gaining a rails run.

But once Blue Door drifted only slightly off the fence, Guest House again showed what a racehorse he is by powering through the gap and coming away to score imperiously by 1.3 lengths, defying the betting drift which led to him starting $7 third favourite.

Blue Door held second at $1.95, 0.9 lengths ahead of Slipper third placegetter Music Time (All Too Hard) at $12. The highly rated Warwoven (Sword Of State) made only a little ground from the rear to finish fifth on his resumption at $7.50.

“Amazing, wasn't it?” said Price, who trains Guest House in partnership with Michael Kent Jr.

“As I said in an interview, the people make up their own mind, the horse will write his own story and it was just an amazing win.

“He's a very good horse. You might even think he's improved from his Slipper to come out here over 1100 metres and do what he did, and he had to race so genuinely; Blue Door was holding the fence."

“He [Lloyd] was on the right horse and if you've got the right motor and the right horse, it's a lot easier than if you're not on the bridle.

“But geez, he's a good colt.”

He's a very good horse. You might even think he's improved from his Slipper to come out here over 1100 metres and do what he did

Mick Price

Price confirmed an Everest tilt, saying he wanted Guest House “in the zone for the three races that make his colt career” – the Golden Rose, The Everest and the Coolmore.

“They're the three races where, once I can get him in that zone, just leave him alone a little bit,” the Cranbourne trainer said.

“I thought 1100 metres was a little bit short for him, first off, but that's just how good he is.”

Price has no doubts Guest House could cope with the 1400 metres of the Golden Rose, and possibly a 1600-metre Guineas trip as well.

“You know what, if someone said to me, can you win the Caulfield Guineas with this, it could happen, but you can't do everything,” Price said. “He's just a gun colt, and I'm very happy that Coolmore have backed him. He's just fantastic.”

Lloyd said Guest House had returned a better horse.

“His trials have been really good. I must say, I think everyone's a little surprised how good that really was because we all thought he was [still] progressing,” the young jockey said.

“He's a big, robust colt. He's only going to get better with every run he has. And for him to do that at 1100 metres, it's very exciting. But yeah, good to have him back.

“I knew at the 400, the way he was coping with that speed, he was just ready to go. And I needed a run, but I knew I had a very good horse underneath me, so I wasn't rushing. Tommy [Berry] gave him enough room, and those horses, you give them a message, they're straight in there.

“So, fantastic, and he's actually done that quite comfortably. A perfect first-time run for him.”

Bred by Love Racing PL, Henderson Racing and Breeding and G1g Racing and Breeding, Guest House was bought from Newgate’s draft at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale for $270,000 by Price, Tim Rogers Bloodstock and the Roll The Dice Racing group, whose familiar colours he still bears, despite Coolmore's buy-in.

He’s the sixth foal of Flamboyant Lass – a daughter of another Slipper winner in Stratum (Redoute’s Choice) – who was trained by Gai Waterhouse for two wins and two stakes placings, and has also borne a Melbourne two-year-old stakes placegetter in Nitrous (Deep Field).

Flamboyant Lass – bought by Coolmore at this year’s Inglis Chairman’s Sale for $800,000 in foal to the stud’s stallion Storm Boy (Justify) – now has a two-year-old filly by Slipper winner Stay Inside (Extreme Choice) who didn’t go to public auction, and she missed to the same stallion in 2025.

She’s now overdue to throw her Justify foal.

Coolmore’s Champion first-season sire Home Affairs has five stakes winners from 61 runners at 8.2 per cent, with his service fee leaping this year from $82,500 to $176,000 (inc GST).

World stage beckons for brilliant Beiwacht

Outstanding Godolphin stallion Beiwacht (Bivouac) may be steered towards international targets after making a sensational return to score his third elite triumph in Saturday’s Memsie Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Caulfield.

Previously winning last spring’s Golden Rose (Gr 1, 1400m) and the autumn’s All Aged Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at three, the Chris Waller-trained galloper made it a top-tier treble over the trip with a dominant display in Melbourne’s weight-for-age first Group 1 of the season.

Ridden by Nash Rawiller, the slightly easy $6 third favourite crossed to the front from barrier seven of 12, and travelled powerfully throughout. On straightening he powered away from the field under hands-and-heels riding to put the race to bed by the 200-metre mark, and he eventually scored by three lengths.

Beiwacht (Credit: Racing Photos)

The seemingly ageless Mr Brightside (Bullbars) resumed as a nine-year-old at $21 and sat second all the way, while $3.30 favourite Cosmic Crusader (Maurice) made ground from the rear to finish 0.4 lengths away in third while chasing a winning hat-trick.

Treasurethe Moment (Alabama Express) was a close-up fourth in a decent return as a five-year-old mare, at $10, whereas $3.80 second elect Jimmysstar (Per Incanto) looked disappointing first-up in ninth.

With Beiwacht’s stallion credentials well and truly sealed for his breeders Darley, Waller indicated a campaign abroad could be in his future.

There may be doubt, however, that such plans would include Royal Ascot, with the trainer conceding Beiwacht might not be at his best over a straight course. While he ran a fair fourth up the Flemington straight in last spring’s Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m), he was last of eight on the same straight track in the autumn’s Lightning Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m).

“We said last year we were keen to take him internationally, but he’s not a real straight horse,” Waller said. “He was out of his comfort zone in the Lightning and it dented our confidence a little bit. He’s a specialist 1400-metre type horse, so there are some international thoughts there.

“He’s done a great job. He beat the older horses in the All-Aged and it was a great ride by Nash today and to see him come back, it was a terrific win.”

He added: “We’ll find something. I’ll talk to the Godolphin team and I’m sure there will be some good races in store for him.”

Beiwacht was scratched from last Saturday’s Winx Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Randwick after a temperature spike, but Waller said he’d quickly recovered – as evidenced by the strength of his Memsie win.

“We didn’t panic. It came up enough to say he didn’t need to leave the stable [on Saturday] and remarkably his blood on Monday was perfect,” said Waller, celebrating his 204th Group 1 success.

“We galloped him at Rosehill on Tuesday. He was fine on Wednesday and everything has been good since. So whatever it was, it didn’t last long.”

The master trainer added Beiwacht had “really fitted well into our system” since arriving in mid 2025 as Godolphin switched to a public training model.

“Saddling him up before the race, he was a delight to work with. He was really focused. It sounds like I’m talking about a person, but he was really in the zone and just concentrating on his racing,” said Waller, who’s won the first two elite events of the season, with Autumn Glow (The Autumn Sun) taking the Winx.

He's always been a lovely colt but he just went to a new level today. There's no doubt about that

Nash Rawiller

Rawiller has stuck to Beiwacht like glue since first partnering him in a Canterbury barrier trial win on April 10, scoring on him in the All Aged eight days later, then riding him in the two trials which opened this campaign.

“What a thrill,” he said after his 73rd Group 1 success.

“I just prayed all week that he'd come out and do something like that, but it's like a dream come true when he has.

“He's always been a lovely colt but he just went to a new level today. There's no doubt about that.

“He's always had a good attitude. He's always just had that raw, high cruising speed. He's just matured and God that was a special feeling the whole way up the straight. He just had them cold. It was exciting.”

Beiwacht is the seventh foal of Metastasio (Street Cry), who’s thrown another stakes winner in Gravina (Sebring), winner of the MRC Village Stakes (Listed, 1200m).

Metastasio now has a two-year-old filly by Microphone (Exceed And Excel), and after missing to Benbatl (Dubawi) in 2024, was covered again by Bivouac (Exceed And Excel) last October.

Bivouac, who won two 1200-metre Group 1s up the Flemington straight, has eight stakes winners worldwide from 138 runners at 5.8 per cent. The ten-year-old stands at Darley Kelvinside this year for $33,000 (inc. GST), down from $55,000.

Jockey Craig Williams said Mr Brightside – who won the Memsie in 2023 and has now finished second in its past three editions – appeared set for a highly competitive spring despite his age.

“He’s an amazing horse,” he said. “He’s now run second in this race again, and what I really liked about his performance today, I thought the last part of the straight was better than the first part of the straight, so I think he’s only going to improve off today’s run.”

American Eagle soars into Group 1 calculations

The Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) or the Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) lie in prospect for American Eagle (Too Darn Hot) after the colt became his surging sire’s latest Australian black type winner on Saturday.

American Eagle (Credit: Racing Photos)

The Anthony and Sam Freedman-trained colt went into Saturday’s McNeil Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) for three-year-olds at Caulfield six weeks after making a winning debut for the MyRacehorse syndicate.

While that 0.8-length victory came in a modest midweek Sandown two-year-old handicap on a heavy 9, punters saw enough to make him a heavily backed $3.20 favourite for his rise to Group company at start two in the McNeil.

And the near black colt didn’t disappoint.

Jumping from gate one of ten for Mark Zahra, American Eagle settled behind the leader under an even tempo. Once a gap appeared on straightening, the colt drove through it to take what became a decisive lead.

While he was tiring late on a soft 6 track, he held on by 0.2 lengths from the fast-finishing Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) winner Unit Five (Supido), the $5.50 second favourite.

Another Ciaron Maher-trained colt, Seraphox (Harry Angel) took third at $17 for his second straight stakes placing at start number four.

American Eagle is now on the fifth line of betting at $11 for the Coolmore at Flemington on October 31, but is an $8 second favourite for the Caulfield Guineas on October 10, behind $4.50 chance Tron Bolt (Toronado).

Sam Freedman said the colt’s spring targets were still to be decided, adding another possibility was Rosehill’s Golden Rose (Gr 1, 1400m) on September 26, for which he’s at $26.

“Our plan was always to go to the Guineas Prelude, but he's pretty brilliant,” he said.

“He's got a nice turn of foot, he can take up a spot. You're aiming for either a Coolmore or a Guineas, but we'll let the dust settle and see how he pulls up.

“One thing I'd say as well, he's won on soft ground in the winter and it’s probably got a bit of give today. So we still want to tick a box on firm ground, but he's progressive.

“He took up a spot, he settled well. He's got a great brain on him.

“He'll give himself a chance to run a mile if we want to go that way. I thought he was knocking up probably the last 50 metres today. He was probably just ready for the six [furlongs].

“So whether we push on, a Prelude, and then whether you pivot and go to the Guineas or whether you freshen and go to the Coolmore.”

Asked whether a Sydney mission was an option, Freedman said: “For sure. You've got a Golden Rose there. There's probably more seasoned horses at that point in time going to that sort of race but the fact he can take up a spot is going to hold him in good stead once he gets out in trip, if he does get to a mile in time, and the 1400 metres is a nice stepping stone.

“So we've got some decisions to make.”

Freedman said American Eagle had always impressed in the stable.

“It's the time of year that you're hoping to have horses like these, particularly colts going to these sorts of races,” he said.

“Anthony had a good opinion of this horse very early days up in Sydney. That’s been vindicated; the horse has come down here and shown class at home.

“He looks the real deal so hopefully he’ll keep getting better.”

Zahra was hugely impressed after partnering American Eagle for the first time.

“He’s a very nice horse,” he said. “He jumped really quick and then nearly fell over after that, but he picked himself up and I got to the front a fair way out.

“Good job to battle on. He went again when the other horse [Unit Five] came to me. There’s a heap of improvement to come. He’s got a very bright spring ahead of him.”

Asked if American Eagle would see out the 1600 metres of the Guineas, Zahra said: “I think so. He’s pretty sharp but he’s on the right path first-up. You head that way and he’ll be on the right path.

“He’s still very green, he’s got a lot to learn, but he’s very tractable. Every race he’ll get better. When the grand final comes hopefully he’s at his best.”

Bred by Yulong, American Eagle is the third foal of Awake The Stars (Redoute’s Choice), a six-time winning daughter of New Zealand Group 2 victor My Chicharita (Towkay).

Awake The Stars now has a two-year-old colt by Yulong’s Grunt (O’Reilly) who hasn’t gone to public auction, and was covered last spring by Widden Victoria’s King Colorado (Kingman).

American Eagle became the 17th Australian black type winner for Darley’s shuttling sensation Too Darn Hot (Dubawi) from 177 runners, at 9.6 per cent – easily bettering his global mark of 6.7 per cent.

The ten-year-old stands at Darley Kelvinside this spring for Australia’s equal second-highest service fee of $275,000 (inc GST), unchanged from last year.

Oliveanotherday takes another step towards the top

Warrnambool-trained four-year-old Oliveanotherday (Nicconi) confirmed himself a potential sprinting star of the spring when claiming his fifth straight victory in The Heath (Gr 3, 1100m) at Caulfield on Saturday.

Having risen to black type grade in his home town’s Wangoom Stakes (Listed, 1200m) to round off his last campaign, the Tom Dabernig-trained Oliveanotherday progressed to Group company for his resumption and took it in his impressive stride.

Oliveanotherday (Credit: Racing Photos)

Ridden by Harry Coffey and backed into $2.30 favouritism, the gelding tracked the leader – the $3.70 second elect Bridal Waltz (Snitzel) – throughout from gate one of eight.

Bridal Waltz attempted to steal a winning break by the 200 metres, but once a gap appeared for Oliveanotherday behind her, the favourite jumped into the lead with disarming ease in a couple of bounds, powering away to score by 1.5 lengths.

Bridal Waltz finished 1.3 lengths ahead of the third-placed War Machine (Harry Angel) at $6 in a market-order trifecta.

Dabernig, enjoying a strong run of success of late with other stakes-winning sprinters in Cavalry Girl (Bivouac) and Shadhavar (Pride Of Dubai), said Oliveanotherday – who’s won six from eight overall – appeared an exceptional speedster who could be in for a glorious spring, with Group 1 targets on his horizon.

"You don't get your hands on these horses very often,” said Dabernig, who has gradually built up his stable since ending his days as a co-trainer at Lindsay Park in 2021, with 85 named horses now on his books.

“We were a bit concerned about barrier one and I was mindful, talking to Harry Coffey during the week, of not wanting to chase the speed and hold a position and give him too hard a run.

“Turning for home when he was held up, we were all a bit tense. He's a horse that can quicken and get himself out of trouble in two or three strides and when he hit the front, I saw that Harry didn't have to use the whip all that much and was hands-and-heels, and he won nicely.

"It's a great way to kick the preparation off and hopefully he can continue into the spring and take those next steps.”

Dabernig said he hoped Oliveanotherday could progress to the top tier this spring, with the Manikato Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) on September 27 at Caulfield a possible destination.

Bookmakers wound him in to clear favouritism for that $2 million Saturday night feature at $3.50, ahead of $6 equal second favourites Giga Kick (Scissor Kick) and Jigsaw (Manhattan Rain).

“He does everything so easy. When he was going through the grades he was winning his races by good margins and in good times,” the trainer said.

“I understand as we get deeper into the spring, it gets tougher, but now he's a lovely sound horse and the sky's the limit.

“The ultimate goal is to try and get him to a Group 1 in best possible shape and we might look at the Bobbie Lewis [on September 12] to give him a look at the straight at Flemington, which might open up an option for Cup week.

"The goal at the moment would probably be the Manikato. He's a very good Caulfield horse.”

Harry Coffey (Credit: Racing Photos)

Coffey, who’s partnered the son of Nicconi (Bianconi) in his past three starts, was hugely impressed with his victory in a race in which the past three winners include subsequent Group 1 victors Asfoora (Flying Artie) and Tropicus (Too Darn Hot).

“Credit to Tom,” Coffey said. “He wanted me to ride him in a relaxed manner and not panic. He said, ‘If the gaps come, he’ll get you out of trouble’ and he was certainly right because the horse was superb today.

“We found ourselves in a bit of trouble but I was following the right horse. When you’re riding a good horse and you’ve drawn barrier one, they know where you are, so I had to bide my time.
One of his biggest assets is that at the 600, he grabs the bridle and wants to break them up of his own accord. He tried to do that but you can’t when you’re following them, so he got awkwardly placed on heels a couple of times.

“It was an unusual feeling swinging off a horse’s head trying to stop them at that part of the race, but when the gap came he quickened into it well.

“I’m really pleased with him. Geez he’s a lovely horse. He used to be a little bit fiery but this time around he’s matured. You’ve got to do that when you go to better races and so far he’s aiming up like he’ll be able to.”

A homebred for co-owner Andrew Harrison, Oliveanotherday is the first foal of Olive (All Too Hard), a city-placed half-sister to Group 3 winner Stirling Grove (Mossman) out of the Listed-winning mare Kalamata (Desert Prince).

Olive now has a two-year-old filly by Foxwedge (Fastnet Rock) and was covered by Nicconi again last spring.

Nicconi – famed as the sire of super sprinter Nature Strip among his two elite victors – has 31 stakes winners from 967 runners worldwide at 3.21 per cent.

The 21-year-old covered 51 mares at Widden Victoria last spring and stands there again this year for an unchanged $13,200 (inc. GST).

91 for Street Boss

Darley’s Street Boss (Street Cry) notched his 91st individual stakes winner when the progressive Custom (4 m ex Wedding Veil, by Dubawi) landed Saturday’s Courtza Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Caulfield, providing Ciaron Maher with another promising spring mare. Stepping back into black-type company for the first time since her three-year-old season, the four-year-old produced a sharp turn of foot under Ethan Brown to defeat fellow Godolphin homebred Photograph (Blue Point) by 1.8 lengths, with Salty Pearl (Tagaloa) finishing third. Maher felt the three-week gap between runs had allowed Custom to return to her peak after a below-par effort second-up. “She ran a peak the start before in that really good win here, and then we just ran it back two weeks, and I think it just took the shine off her a little bit,” Maher said. “But we were confident… just with that three-week break, she's gone back to her best.” The trainer believes there is further improvement to come from the mare, who has now won three of her 13 starts. “She’s progressive. She's been a bit quirky. She's had little issues and stuff in the past, and she's still coming in the coat as well,” Maher said. “We'll just keep raising the bar.” Custom is one of four winners and the first stakes winner out of the imported Dubawi (Dubai Millennium) mare Wedding Veil, an unraced half-sister to Group 1 winner Ibn Khaldun (Dubai Destination) from the family of Group 1 winners Gossamer (Sadler’s Wells), Zardozi (Kingman) and Program Trading (Lope De Vega). Wedding Veil has an unraced two-year-old filly, Armadale (Anamoe), while she is currently in foal to Street Boss again after losing a Cylinder (Exceed And Excel) filly following foaling. Street Boss is standing the 2026 season at Kelvinside in Victoria for $66,000 (inc GST).

36 for Too Darn Hot

American Eagle (3 c ex Awake The Stars, by Redoute's Choice) became the 36th individual stakes winner and 17th in Australia for Darley’s Too Darn Hot (Dubawi) when landing Saturday’s McNeil Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Caulfield. Bred by Yulong, American Eagle is the third foal out of Awake The Stars (Redoute’s Choice), a six-time winning daughter of New Zealand Group 2 victor My Chicharita (Towkay). Awake The Stars now has a two-year-old colt by Yulong’s Grunt (O’Reilly) who hasn’t gone to public auction, and was covered last spring by King Colorado (Kingman). Too Darn Hot now boasts a 9.6 per cent stakes winners to runners ratio in Australia – easily bettering his global mark of 6.7 per cent. The ten-year-old stands at Darley Kelvinside this spring for Australia’s equal second-highest service fee of $275,000 (inc GST), unchanged from last year.

Seven for Written By

Plagiarism (3 g ex Profiterole, by Snitzel) gave Widden Stud sire Written By (Written Tycoon) a seventh individual stakes winner when breaking his maiden in Saturday’s Up And Coming Stakes (Gr 3, 1300m) at Rosehill. Bred by Widden Stud, Double R Thoroughbreds and Ben Walsh, Plagiarism is the second foal out of Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) mare Profiterole, herself a sister to Listed scorer Nomothaj. He sold out of Widden’s draft at the 2025 Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale for $120,000 to Redfox Racing. Champion 2YO Colt Written By is standing at Widden for a fee of $22,000 (inc GST).

Gelding unlocks Plagiarism as Golden Rose beckons

Plagiarism (Credit: Bradley Photos)

The Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) dream may have eluded Plagiarism as a juvenile, but Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott could yet have a major three-year-old prize within reach after the gelding announced himself as a genuine spring contender with victory in Saturday’s Up And Coming Stakes at Rosehill.

Winless despite being tested exclusively in strong company during his two-year-old campaign, Plagiarism rewarded the Tulloch Lodge team’s decision to geld him when producing a dominant front-running display under Regan Bayliss.

Sent forward from the outset, the $8 chance controlled proceedings before kicking strongly in the straight to defeat the fast-finishing Genesis Runner (Gun Runner) by 0.8 lengths, with Hostwin King (King’s Legacy) another half-length away in third.

The victory may have represented a breakthrough on paper, but it came as little surprise to Bott, who has long held the three-year-old in high regard.

“We have had in all the biggest races so far, we haven't run him in maidens, and that was his first win today,'' Bott said.

“Last preparation we chased the Golden Slipper dream but it just wasn't happening for him. I feel having the horse gelded has helped him, definitely. He was impressive today.''

Plagiarism had signalled he was ready to deliver when finishing third under 60 kilograms on his seasonal return at Rosehill, and he relished a drop in weight on Saturday to record his first victory.

Bayliss was confident a long way from home that his mount would prove difficult to overhaul.

“He is a horse that can roll along at a nice speed and quicken off that which is a really good attribute to have,'' Bayliss said.

“When he got there so easily and got into a great rhythm I thought it was going to take a good one to run him down. He was just too good.

“He keeps improving and that was a really good confidence boosting win. He is on the way up.''

The performance could now prompt a rethink of Plagiarism’s spring programme.

While races including the Tapp-Craig (Listed, 1400m) and Callander-Presnell (Gr 2, 1600m) had been under consideration, Bott said the Golden Rose (Gr 1, 1400m) was now firmly on the table.

“We will look at the Golden Rose,'' Bott said. “There is probably a sweet spot getting out to 1400 metres for this horse.

“I thought he might have been a step below the top three-year-olds but he was very impressive today. He has always shown natural speed and brilliance. We wanted to see him utilise that and he executed that perfectly.”

Behind him, Genesis Runner, a son of elite US stallion Gun Runner (Candy Ride) whose Newcastle breakthrough made him his sire’s first Australian winner, lost little in defeat as the Richard and Will Freedman-trained colt charged home into second at his first appearance in stakes company.

Tulloch Lodge’s heavily backed $2.30 favourite Savagram (Savabeel), meanwhile, was doing his best work late in fourth at just his second career start.

Bott felt the inexperienced colt’s performance only strengthened the view that his future will lie over further.

“I thought he was excellent,'' Bott said. “It was his second start and that was probably what showed. When the speed increased from the 600 he just wanted to lay out slightly under pressure. But I thought he knuckled down really well and was excellent through the line.”

Stablemate Savvy Diamond (Savabeel) endured a more difficult passage, striking trouble early and dropping to the rear before finishing eighth.

Oaks beckons for unbeaten Proxima Dea

Proxima Dea (Credit: Bradley Photos)

David Payne has identified the VRC Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m) as the spring destination for unbeaten filly Proxima Dea (Tarzino) after she maintained her perfect record with a thrilling victory at Rosehill on Saturday. The three-year-old was forced to dig deep to make it three wins from as many starts in the 1800-metre contest, reeling in a runaway Doradus (Adelaide) in the final strides after the leader had opened up a six-length advantage approaching the straight. Prefer Diamonds (Preferment), a $51 outsider, was another 0.2 lengths away in third. The victory completed a faultless first preparation for the promising filly and convinced Payne she possesses the stamina required to target the Oaks at Flemington on November 5. “She has a lot of upside and will stay all day,'' Payne said. “She's very promising and I want to get her to the Oaks in the spring. I'll give her ten days in the paddock now to freshen her up as she's very fit. I might look at a race like the Gloaming Stakes [on October 10] for her and then decide whether we stay in Sydney or send her straight to Melbourne for the Oaks.'' Proxima Dea was ridden patiently by apprentice Braith Nock, who refused to panic as Doradus established what appeared a potentially race-winning break. “I was happy enough with the run we had,'' Nock said. “It was a fast tempo and she was a little out of her comfort zone to stay in touch so I didn't want to go for her too soon. But when the pressure went on, she was tough to the end.'' Proxima Dea was subsequently shortened to $8 equal favouritism alongside Miss Chanel (Tagaloa) for the VRC Oaks.

Aethelwulf romps at Rosehill

Rapidly improving stayer Aethelwulf (Saxon Warrior) continued his relentless rise through the grades at Rosehill on Saturday, cruising to another emphatic victory and prompting trainer Matthew Smith to raise the possibility of a tilt at The Metropolitan (Gr 2, 2400m). Having started his campaign with a Newcastle maiden victory, Aethelwulf has now won four of his five starts this preparation, with his latest success in the Merrylands RSL Handicap (2000m) arguably his most effortless yet. Sent out the $1.35 favourite under Zac Lloyd, Aethelwulf always appeared to have his rivals covered and was barely extended as he swept clear to defeat Anthracite (Mongolian Khan) ($7.50), with Kenmare Bay (New Bay) ($15) back in third. The performance saw Aethelwulf shorten to $6 equal favouritism alongside King Of The Sea (Sea The Moon) for The Metropolitan at Randwick on October 3, with Smith considering using the Newcastle Cup (Gr 3, 2300m) as his stepping stone into the $750,000 contest. “We might go to the Newcastle Cup first,'' Smith said. “If he gets through that then why not?'' Aethelwulf’s progression has surprised even Smith, with the stayer proving a vastly different proposition on race day to the laid-back galloper he sees at home. “He's a pretty unassuming horse at home; a lazy trackworker but he's switched on come raceday,” Smith said. “It was good to see him step up in grade today and once he learns his craft he could be very good. I feel 2000 and beyond will be his trip as he has a massive stride – the biggest stride in my stable – but it's a big, easy, loping stride, very economical.''

Mr Miller puts Epsom credentials on show

Mr Miller (Credit: Bradley Photos)

Progressive four-year-old Mr Miller (Almanzor) could be given the opportunity to earn a place in the Epsom Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) after producing an impressive victory at Rosehill on Saturday. The Chris Waller-trained gelding justified $1.90 favouritism when streaking clear under Tommy Berry to defeat stablemate Invader Zim (Invader) by 2.9 lengths in the Bankstown Sports Handicap (1500m), taking his record to three wins and two seconds from five starts. “Mr Miller should be five from five,” Waller’s stable representative Darren Beadman said. “He's a very push-button type of horse and puts himself into the right spots in his races. He has the turn of foot to put them away quickly.” Berry, who was battling influenza, was similarly impressed with the lightly raced gelding. “He's a real natural, this bloke. He's very fast out of the machines then as soon as you put him in a spot, he switches off. I loved how he picked up around the bend and he feels like has so many gears.” Mr Miller was subsequently shortened to $11 for the Epsom, but Beadman said the gelding would need to improve his rating to make the field, with qualifying contests including the Cameron Handicap (Gr 3, 1500m), Bill Ritchie Handicap (Gr 3, 1400m) and Shannon Stakes (Gr 2, 1500m) potential options. “Chris has given him plenty of time and everything this horse has done has been very impressive. He’s certainly getting everyone to take notice.”

New Zealand

15 for Hello Youmzain

Cambridge Stud shuttler Hello Youmzain (Kodiac) added a 15th individual stakes winner to his burgeoning record when Perfect Chaos (3 f ex Kali, by Darci Brahma) became his latest black-type scorer with an emphatic victory in Saturday’s Wanganui Guineas (Listed, 1200m). Trained by Stephen Marsh, Perfect Chaos chose the ideal stage to shed her maiden tag, having finished in the placings in each of her four starts during her juvenile campaign. Sent out the $3.60 favourite under George Rooke, the three-year-old showed natural speed to settle outside leader Startles (U S Navy Flag) before travelling strongly into the home straight. Rooke asked the filly for her effort passing the 300 metres and she quickly took control, holding off the late challenges of O’Baby (Ardrossan) and Singletary (Satono Aladdin) to secure valuable early-season black type. Stable representative Dylan Johnson believes there is considerably more to come from the filly, who is nominated for the New Zealand 1000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) at Riccarton. “Her form at two was impeccable and she is a filly we didn’t pay a hell of a lot of money for,” Johnson said. “She is by Hello Youmzain and he’s starting to kick a few goals, while she is well bred on her dam side. To get black-type in the spring of your three-year-old season is outstanding. She is nominated for the Guineas so we would like to get her out to 1400 metres in time, but we have the runs on the board now and can plot our way through to Christchurch.” A $50,000 purchase by Marsh and Johnson from The Oaks Stud’s Book 1 draft at Karaka in 2025, Perfect Chaos is the second foal out of Barneswood Farm Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) winner Kali (Darci Brahma). Her extended family includes Western Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Markus Maximus (Pentire). Hello Youmzain is standing at Cambridge Stud for $20,000 (plus GST).

Group 1 ambitions grow for Belles Beau

Robbie Patterson has Group 1 ambitions for Belles Beau (Iffraaj) after the progressive six-year-old produced an impressive weight-carrying performance to make a winning return at Wanganui on Saturday. The son of Iffraaj (Zafonic), twice Group 2-placed during his summer campaign, defied a track favouring on-speed runners when storming home under 60.5 kilograms to land the Take It Easy Tours (1200m). Settled towards the rear by Craig Grylls, Belles Beau was still five lengths from the leaders rounding the home bend before sweeping around the field and powering clear to defeat Amazing Son (Belardo) by 1.8 lengths. “He is right there and is a Group 1 contender,” Patterson said. “He’s furnished into a lovely horse. He is up in the weights now so we will have to go to weight-for-age, but he won’t run in the Proisir Plate as it is next week but maybe the one after that [Group 1 Howden Insurance Mile].” Bred and raced by Eddie and Nicola Bourke and Allan Piercy, Belles Beau has now won six of his 18 starts and earned more than $218,000. Patterson completed a double when Bokushi (Swiss Ace) narrowly scored in the Wanganui Chronicle 1340 (1340m). “He is going to get a lovely mile as he relaxes well,” Patterson said.

Outback Girl earns Canterbury Belle shot

Outback Girl (Bivouac) will be given an opportunity to earn black type after the Stephanie Faulkner-trained filly broke her maiden in impressive fashion at Riccarton on Saturday. Outback Girl booked a return to the Christchurch track for the Canterbury Belle Stakes (Listed, 1200m) in a fortnight after cruising to a 3.3-length victory in the Cup Week Tickets On Sale – 1 September Three-Year-Old (1100m). Ridden by apprentice Kendra Bakker, Outback Girl showed good early speed to take up the running before kicking clear inside the final 200 metres to defeat Glamour Extreme (Extreme Warrior). “I knew she had a big heart and a lot of early speed, she is a tough wee thing,” Faulkner said. Outback Girl had shown promise during her juvenile campaign, placing twice from five starts and finishing fourth in both the Welcome Stakes (Listed, 1000m) and Champagne Stakes (Listed, 1200m). Faulkner will now give the Colin Wightman-raced filly the chance to add black type to a family already rich in stakes success. “I thought I would put her in today to see if she would shape up to go to the Canterbury Belle Stakes, so Canterbury Belle Stakes here we come,” Faulkner said.

Williams bows out with fairytale Riccarton victory

Kylie Williams brought the curtain down on her riding career in fairytale fashion at Riccarton on Saturday, partnering What She Wants (Almanzor) to victory in the aptly named Celebrating Kylie Williams (1800m) with her final raceday ride. Nearly 30 years after having her first ride at Riccarton as a 16-year-old on New Zealand Cup Day in 1996, Williams returned to the winner’s enclosure for the 1,020th and final time aboard the Shankar Muniandy-trained six-year-old. Williams settled What She Wants in sixth before creeping into contention approaching the home turn, where she and Speed Dial (Time Test) drew clear to fight out the finish. Calling on all of her experience, Williams lifted What She Wants in the final strides to score by 0.1 lengths in front of a large gathering of family and friends. “It’s turned out a bloody good day,” Williams said. “Nine times out of ten bad things can happen in this game, so when it does go right, you take the positives and run with them. It’s been a pretty special day. To do it for Shank [Muniandy], as we rode together, is pretty fitting.” Williams retires with 1,020 victories, including 32 at Group or Listed level, having celebrated her 1,000th aboard Riviera Rebel (Pure Champion) in last year’s North Canterbury Cup (2000m). She will begin the next chapter of her career on Monday as New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing’s South Island Riding Mentor. Williams’ son Logan Bates is continuing the family tradition in Australia and registered his first Group 1 success aboard Jigsaw (Manhattan Rain) in the Railway (Gr 1, 1200m) at Ellerslie earlier this year.

JPN: Fast Network set for Japanese Group 1 raid

Hong Kong sprinter Fast Network (Wrote) is set to embark on a two-race Japanese campaign next month, with trainer Dennis Yip targeting the Sprinters Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Nakayama. Fast Network is slated to make his Japanese debut in the Centaur Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Hanshin on September 6 before remaining in the country ahead of the Sprinters Stakes three weeks later. While an official invitation from the Japan Racing Association is still to arrive, Hong Kong Jockey Club Head of Racing Product Greg Carpenter confirmed the proposed itinerary. “Dennis has nominated for the Centaur Stakes on September 6 and the Sprinters Stakes on September 27,” Carpenter told Idol Horse. “What I asked on behalf of Dennis was whether the horse can stay in Japan for the three weeks in between or whether he has to return, and the answer is that he can stay.” Fast Network's rider remains undecided, with Jerry Chau firmly in contention to retain the mount for both races. Owner interest in securing James McDonald has also been floated, although Yip considers that prospect unlikely. “The owner asked me, James McDonald? But I don't think he will,” Yip said. “If Jerry rides, he will ride in both races.” Victory at Nakayama would make Fast Network the third Hong Kong-trained winner of the Sprinters Stakes, joining Silent Witness (El Moxie), who triumphed in 2005, and Ultra Fantasy (Encosta De Lago), successful five years later. Hong Kong was represented last year by Lucky Sweynesse (Sweynesse), who finished 11th behind Win Carnelian (Screen Hero).

First for Naval Crown

Sea Of Rain (2 f ex Neophilia, by Teofilo) became the first stakes winner for Darley’s first-season sire Naval Crown (Dubawi) when landing Saturday’s Newtownanner Stud Irish EBF Stakes (Gr 3, 1m) at the Curragh. Trained by Jim Bolger, the filly was always holding her rivals, crossing the line three quarters of a length in front of runner-up Ballyskeagh (Gleneagles) with Damsel In Distress (Minzaal) another neck away in third. Bred by her trainer, Sea Of Rain is the first stakes winner out of dual winner Neophilia. Platinum Jubilee Stakes (Gr 1, 6f) winner Naval Crown stood the 2026 season at Kildangan Stud at a fee of €9,000 (approx. AU$14,552).

94 for Night Of Thunder

Reigning Champion Sire Night Of Thunder was another Kildangan resident and another son of Dubawi (Dubai Millennium) on the stakes scoresheet at the Curragh on Saturday, as the John and Thady Gosden-trained Miss Scott (3 f ex Queen Guenevere, by Camelot) easily claimed the Snow Fairy Fillies’ Stakes (Gr 3, 1m 1f). Ridden by Christophe Soumillon, the three-year-old went clear late to comfortably defeat Faiyum (Frankel) by three and three quarter lengths, with Sindria (Kodiac) third. The 94th individual stakes winner of her sire, Miss Scott becomes the third stakes winner out of Queen Guenevere, following the Listed-winning feats of Catalina Delcarpio (Lope De Vega) and Grand Stars (Sea The Stars). She was a 650,000gns purchase for The Thoroughbred Racing Corporation out of Ballylinch Stud at Book 1 of the 2024 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale. Night Of Thunder stood at a fee of €200,000 (approx. AU$323,380) in 2026.

326 for Dubawi

Not to be upstaged by his sons, the breed-shaping Dubawi sired his 326th individual stakes winner on Saturday when Love Dynasty (5 m ex Geisha Girl, by Galileo) landed the Atalanta Stakes (Gr 3, 1m) at Sandown. Ridden by Neil Callan for trainer Kevin Ryan, the mare was tough late, holding off Noche Clasica (Night Of Thunder) by a neck, with the same margin back to Moon Target (Cracksman) in third. Bred by Rabbah Bloodstock Limited, Love Dynasty was a 190,000gns buy for Joe Foley at Book 1 of the 2022 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale and she races in the colours of Clipper Logistics. The first stakes winner out of unraced Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) mare Geisha Girl, the five-year-old is from the family of 2009 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Elusive Wave (Elusive City). Dubawi stood his latest season at Dalham Hall Stud for £350,000 (approx. AU$661,150).
