Well-bred filly Beside The Ocean (Zoustar) looked an exciting prospect in the making when shedding her maiden status in a 1300-metre event at Warwick Farm on Wednesday.
Trained by Chris Waller, the three-year-old was having just her second start having finished runner-up on debut at Randwick last month and she surged clear in the closing stages to beat Koibito (Satono Aladdin) by an impressive 3.6 lengths.
However, the filly could be kept on ice until the autumn with Waller revealing she would likely be sent for a spell to prepare for bigger assignments next year.
“I wanted to get today out of the way. She is obviously very well bred and she won’t need to do a lot more this prep,” Waller said. “If you spelled her now, in the autumn she could be one of those P J Bell [Stakes], James Carr [Stakes] fillies.”
By Widden’s newly minted champion sire Zoustar (Northern Meteor), Beside The Ocean is out of the Group 3 winner Tallow (Street Cry), making her a half-sister to 2020 Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) winner and Kia Ora’s exciting second-season stallion Farnan (Not A Single Doubt), She is also a half-sibling to Kooringal Stud’s Listed-winning sire Sandbar (Snitzel).
The filly was a $250,000 purchase for Ridgmont and Clarke Bloodstock from Vinery Stud at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale in 2024.
Tallow produced another filly by Zoustar last year and is in foal to Coolmore’s Golden Slipper-winning stallion, Shinzo (Snitzel).
