The first yearlings by Anamoe (Street Boss) and Jacquinot (Rubick) plus full siblings to In Secret (I Am Invincible), Sunlight (Zoustar), Super Seth (Dundeel) and Stefi Magnetica (All Too Hard) are among highlights in the catalogue for January’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

The five-day sale will kick off on January 13, a week later than normal, with inspections beginning on the Gold Coast. The $7.3m Magic Millions Gold Twilight meeting will take place on the Gold Coast on January 10 and the $13.25m Magic Millions Raceday will take place at the same track a week later on January 17.

What's On

Well-related offspring of proven sires Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt), Zoustar (Northern Meteor), I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) and Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) also feature, along with the progeny of rising stars such as Ole Kirk (Written Tycoon), Home Affairs (I Am Invincible) and Farnan (Not A Single Doubt).

A slightly streamlined catalogue has been assembled with 1,221 yearlings, down from 1,401 last January. That includes 980 lots in Book 1 - down from 1021 - with 241 in Book 2, compared to 380 in 2025.

Magic Millions managing director Barry Bowditch said the 2026 sale could be expected to achieve “great results”, not just for the pedigrees represented but for an exceptional physical crop of yearlings.

“It’s a catalogue that will be extremely well received not only once people open it, but more so when they get on the farms and see the actual yearlings,” Bowditch told ANZ News. “Physically speaking, it’s an outstanding crop.

“All the major players are heavily supporting the sale. All the right sires have big, big numbers. It’s very exciting.

“Compared to recent years, physically speaking, it’s in very good shape. And when you look at the sire strength and mare strength and put it all in a melting pot, I think we’re in a very strong position.”

Last January’s Book 1 sale moved 769 yearlings grossing $207 million with an average of $269,000, down from 2024’s figures of $225m and $276,000 off 819 yearlings sold.

Bowditch said Magic Millions was confident the 2026 edition would present yearlings for the full spectrum of buyers.

“Our team have worked incredibly hard with the vendors to ensure we’ve got a catalogue that’s for everyone,” he said.

“It’s got the high end horses, the middle end, the lower end, and they’re very well-selected horses physically.

“So I’ve got a lot of confidence that whatever budget the buyer comes to us with, they’re going to find plenty of horses for the budget they have.”

No yearlings will be more keenly anticipated than the 33 catalogued by Darley’s first season sire, former track superstar Anamoe (Street Boss).

Among his progeny certain to attract concerted bidding are a pair from Segenhoe Stud in Lot 407, a half-sister to the outstanding Joliestar (Zoustar), and Lot 52, a son of quadruple Group winner Anaheed (Fastnet Rock), along with Lot 893, Lime Country Thoroughbreds’ half-sister to triple Group winner Tuscan Queen (Fastnet Rock).

Darley’s head of stallions Alastair Pulford said hopes were high that Anamoe’s first draft would be extremely well received.

“He’s the best local prospect to have gone to stud in generations - a nine-time Group 1 winner, one of the most expensive horses to go to stud, and certainly the most expensive horse we’ve had for a first season,” Pulford said of Anamoe, who covered his first two books at a service fee of $121,000 (inc GST).

“He got a really good quality book of mares in his first crop. And the word from the moment they started being born was how good these foals were.

“They’ve been probably more precocious than most people expected them to be, and the feedback from sales companies when they did the inspections was very strong.

“He’s got big expectations to fill, but he was an absolutely elite horse - by a Group 1 winner out of a fellow elite-level scorer Anamato (Redoute’s Choice).

Jacquinot (Credit: Widden Stud)

“He’s got that strength in his pedigree so many of these good stallions have, as well as the race performance. We are obviously very very hopeful, almost confident, that he’ll be a top class stallion. I think the market will really like him. He is a real standout.”

Widden Stud’s dual Group 1 winner Jacquinot has 25 yearlings catalogued, including Lot 508, Middlebrook Valley Lodge’s half-brother to Group 1 winner Chain Of Lightning (Fighting Sun) and Lot 484, Attunga Stud’s three-quarter sister to Group 2 victor Erno’s Cube (Rubick).

Newgate Stud’s dual elite victor Artorius (Flying Artie) is represented by 18 yearlings from his first crop, while other debutant sires include Arrowfield’s dual Derby winner Hitotsu (Maurice), Twin Hills Stud’s Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) hero Daumier (Epaulette), and Newgate’s Golden Rose (Gr 1, 1400m) victor In The Congo (Snitzel).

One of the most in-demand yearlings at the sale is sure to be Lot 250, Segenhoe Stud’s brother to In Secret (I Am Invincible), the dual elite winner of the Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) and VRC Newmarket Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m).

The colt’s sister fetched $2.3m as the third-highest lot last January, while In Secret herself was a $900,000 yearling, also at Magic Millions Gold Coast.

Much is expected also of Lot 835, Widden’s full brother to triple Group 1 queen Sunlight (Zoustar), who’s now a stakes-winning producer herself, and whose daughter of Home Affairs topped last January’s auction at a sale record of $3.2 million.

Magic Millions Yearling Sale, Day 5 (Book 2) from 12pm (Lots 981-1221)

Group 1 winner and top-flight-producing sire Super Seth’s brother comes up as Lot 764 from Arrowfield’s draft, while dual elite winner Stefi Magnetica’s brother is Lot 537 from Cressfield’s draft.

Also tipped to turn heads are Coolmore Stud’s sister to dual stakes winning mare Mumbai Muse (I Am Invincible) as Lot 593 and Arrowfield’s brother to smart three-year-old colt Beadman (Snitzel) as Lot 372.

Queensland sensation Cool Archie (Cool Aza Beel) has both a three-quarter sister and a three-quarter brother at the sale, both from the draft of his sire’s farm Newhaven Park, as Lots 77 and 539.

Other Group 1 winners with siblings entered include Imperatriz (Lot 100), Benedetta (972), Devil Night (544), Incentivise (225), Kimochi (873), Manaal (724), Overpass (962), Sepals (970), Stay Inside (624) and Velocious (661).

Elite winning mares with offspring entered include Avantage (Lot 75), Hungry Heart (360), More Joyous (581), Snapdancer (826) and Loving Gaby (493).

Home Affairs (Credit: Coolmore)

Coolmore stallion Home Affairs, fresh off topping both this sale and Inglis Easter earlier this year as a first-season sire, has 46 lots.

They include a half-brother to Group 2 winner and current Newgate sire Cosmic Force (Deep Field) as Lot 478, a half-sister to Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) winner Shaquero (Shalaa) as Lot 277, a filly out of New Zealand Group 1 winner La Luna Rossa (Written Tycoon) as Lot 432, and a colt from dual Argentinian Grade 1 winner Kononkop (Pure Prize) as Lot 427.

Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt) has 12 offerings, highlighted by his farm Newgate’s Lot 362, a filly out of nine-time stakes winner I Am A Star (I Am Invincible).

Triple champion sire I Am Invincible has 40 yearlings involved, including offspring of four Group 1-winning mares in a filly from Avantage in Lot 75, a son of Instant Celebrity (Not A Single Doubt) in Lot 385, a colt from Odeum (Written Tycoon) as Lot 632, and a daughter of Qafila (Not A Single Doubt), as Lot 708.

Reigning champion sire Zoustar (Northern Meteor) is represented by 34 yearlings including daughters of top-level victors Graceful Girl (Nicconi) as Lot 330, and Secret Agenda (Not A Single Doubt) as Lot 779.

Among the 41 offerings from the late Snitzel’s penultimate crop are close relatives to a trio of Group 1 winners: a three-quarter sister to Qafila as Lot 11, a half-sister to Prince Fawaz (Fastnet Rock) as Lot 446, and a brother in blood to Yearning in Lot 730.

I Am Invincible (Credit: Yarraman Park)

Snitzel also has yearlings out of six elite winning mares including a filly from Carry On Alice (Captain Al) as Lot 148, a daughter of Hiyaam (High Chaparral) as Lot 351, and a son of Loving Gaby (I Am Invincible) as Lot 493.

International sires represented include Frankel (Galileo) with 12 lots, Kingman (Invincible Spirit) with three, Baaeed (Sea The Stars) and Blame (Arch) with two each, and Night Of Thunder (Galileo) with one.

Bowditch said the slightly smaller catalogue size - due mainly to having 139 fewer lots in Book 2 than last January - would allow a longer time for inspections of secondary book. The Book 2 sale will also take place on only one day, as opposed to two days in previous years.

“The smaller catalogue is basically a Book 2 change,” he said.

“Our feedback was that it was very hard logistically to get horses into Book 2 and have them all parading at the one time.

“This year the Book 2 horses will arrive when they arrive, not staggered, so they’ll get a good amount of time for inspections.

“Given the fact it’s all just on the Sunday, it allows for plenty more buyers after the big Book 1 and the raceday to stick around to support Book 2.”

Jimmysstar all set for C F Orr Stakes

Ciaron Maher is looking forward to running Jimmysstar (Per Incanto) in Saturday's C F Orr Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Caulfield and has declared the six-year-old gelding to be in 'career-best form'. The dual Group 1-winning son of Per Incanto (Street Cry) was last seen landing the Russell Balding Stakes (1300m) at Randwick on November 1, beating fellow elite-level winner Lady Shenandoah (Snitzel) by a dominant 2.7 lengths, and Maher feels that stepping back up to 1400 metres this weekend will be a huge positive. "He's super. He's in career best form," Maher said. "He's just a good horse, right in that rich vein of form. If the Everest wasn't there, he probably has his first run at 1200 [metres] and then goes to 1400 [metres] and into his sweet spot. But you can see what he did when he went to 1300 [metres] last start and he'll be better again at 1400. He did lead here one day at Flemington, but at 1300 he can travel a bit closer and at 1400 he'll travel even easier."

Group 1 goals for Archibald duo

Group 1 targets are on the cards for the Annabel and Rob Archibald-trained pair Bosustow (Blue Point) and Libertad (Russian Revolution), with the former set to tackle this weekend's C F Orr Stakes and his stablemate being considered for a trip to Perth after an excellent showing in the VRC Champions Sprint (Gr 1, 1200m) at Flemington last Saturday. Libertad was sent off an $81 chance under UK-based jockey Tom Marquand and ran fourth, beaten two lengths by winner Giga Kick (Scissor Kick). “It was massive, he has run fourth in a Champions Sprint going around at a big price,” Annabel Archibald told Racing.com. “When the rain came, I was quietly confident that he could outrun his odds. Look, he’s virtually gone over the line with Joliestar, so it was a super run.” The five-year-old entire holds a nomination for the Winterbottom Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Ascot in Perth on November 29. “He might go to Perth,” Archibald said. “We’ll see how he pulls up; we’ll certainly have a look at the Winterbottom with him. He’s probably an obvious one. Maybe Depth Of Character for the Railway, but you’ve obviously got The Gong [at Kembla Grange] on the same day, so we’ll just have to make a bit of a decision. The flight is on Monday week, so we’ll make a call at some stage soon.” Meanwhile, Bosustow is set to be nominated for the C F Orr after carrying 58.5 kilograms to third in the Rising Fast Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Flemington on Derby Day. “He’s going super,” Archibald said of Bosustow. “He obviously carried a big weight the other day, but he beat Libertad home and that’s good form now. It’s going to be a really strong race next weekend, as it should be, but he’s probably better back to the 1400 metres.”

Waller happy with Orr hope Angel Capital

Chris Waller is pleased he has decided to wait until this Saturday's $1 million C F Orr Stakes with Angel Capital (Harry Angel), instead of running the four-year-old entire in last weekend's Golden Eagle (1500m) on a soft track. Waller’s disappointment at missing the Golden Eagle with Angel Capital was significantly eased when Autumn Glow (The Autumn Sun) maintained her unbeaten run with a victory in the $10 million contest. “He doesn’t like the wet too much,” Waller said. “Obviously, I was reluctant to miss the Golden Eagle, but I’m pleased I did because he likes a good track," Waller told Racing.com of Angel Capital. “So, he’s back down here and we gave him a nice quiet trial last week and he’s ready to go. It’s an important race for him.” The son of Harry Angel (Dark Angel) was last seen running sixth in The Everest (Gr 1, 1200m) and had an easy trial at Rosehill on November 5. “His run in The Everest was nothing short of brilliant,” Waller said. “They just didn’t go quick enough for him, but he ran the fastest final 400 metres.” Bookmakers have Angel Capital marked a $2.50 Orr favourite ahead of Jimmysstar. “I’d prefer if he wasn’t there,” Waller said of Jimmysstar. “He’s got the points on the board, and we are trying to get some points. It should be a great race."

Hayes team to make Mr Brightside campaign decision

Team Hayes's stable star Mr Brightside (Bullbars) has come out of his VRC Champions Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) run with no issues, but co-trainer Ben Hayes has revealed that the eight-year-old is likely to head for a spell. The gelded son of Bullbars (Elusive Quality), who won last year's renewal of the Champions Mile, finished fifth beaten over ten lengths by winner Ceolwulf (Tavistock) last Saturday. “He’s all fine,” Hayes, who trains in partnership with his brothers JD and Will, told Racing.com. “He’s pulled up with no problem. I just think the very, very heavy track and the strong tempo was a bit too much for him on Saturday. He’s eaten up and he actually trotted up really well. He probably hadn’t seen a heavy track like that since he won his second Doncaster, and he was a young horse then. Pride Of Jenni, her racing style doesn’t really suit our horse, but that’s racing. We’ll just see how he is, but it [a spell] is probably likely. No decision made as he has a Perth option and we were thinking of a backing-up [in the Orr], but on that run you wouldn’t.”

Autumn to decide if Ceolwulf takes on 2026 Cox Plate

Joe Pride will wait to see what the autumn brings for Ceolwulf before deciding on whether his stable flagbearer will be targeted at the 2026 Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m). The five-year-old son of Tavistock (Montjeu) landed last weekend's VRC Champions Mile, following up his win in the King Charles III Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) – a success that made it back-to-back wins in that contest. Pride has admitted he is not sure on whether Ceolwulf can run out a 2000-metre trip in an elite-level race. “And I’m open to the fact that that may not be the case,” Pride told SEN. “I’m not blinded by the fact that he’s a good horse and he’ll just be able to do that. He has run some great races at 2000 metres – he’s run second in a Rosehill Guineas – but I think it’s fair to say his best performances so far have been in fast-run miles. And I guess what I’d be banking on there, to help us do this, as he gets a bit older and now that he’s wearing the blinkers that he’s able to adapt to some muddling tempos that he may get in those 2000-metre races. Look, it’s going to be difficult because we’ve got the King Charles and unless those dates are going to change next year, the King Charles being the week before is the fly in the ointment there for me. But the autumn is going to basically decide whether we should be targeting the Cox Plate. Now if he’s good at 2000 metres but not great, I think I’d have to have rocks in my head not aiming him at the King Charles again. But that’s something that will be determined by his autumn campaign.”

Linebacker’s carnival over

Having had another spring campaign that has not gone to plan for Linebacker (Super Seth), trainers John O'Shea and Tom Charlton have decided to call time on the four-year-old's spring campaign and look to the autumn. The Randwick Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner was being prepared for a tilt at the Epsom Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) - Golden Eagle (1500m) double but when a minor injury setback ruled him out of the former, while he could only manage seventh in the latter after having won the Silver Eagle (1300m) impressively one start prior. "It ended up being a testing 1500 [metres] and the preparation we were dealt as a result of the setback didn't set him up well for that. We had wanted to come into it off the mile," Charlton said of the Golden Eagle. "It was a messy race, tricky circumstances in the sense of the ground being quite choppy on the day. He got further back than we would have liked to see and everything that could go wrong did and then he got shut out of a gap up the straight. He will go for a break now and come back in the autumn. I'm confident he can be a pretty good horse for us. Maybe a Canterbury Stakes, a George Ryder [Stakes], Doncaster and then we will learn what his best distance might be."

Duke De Sessa set for return

Last year's Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Duke De Sessa (Lope De Vega) is nearing his return to the racetrack after having run second in a 1200-metre barrier trial at Randwick last Friday. “I thought the trial was very good,” Maher’s assistant trainer Johann Gerard-Dubord told Racing.com. “He just had a little setback earlier in the spring, so we had to back off him for a bit. He had one jumpout at home at Bong Bong so that’s why he trialled over 1200 metres, but I thought it was very good. He was a bit fresh early, but I thought he was very strong through the line and past the line he took a while to pull up. He looks great, he’s feeling well. It’s the time of the year where it’s a bit tricky for him but he’ll probably have one run or two and then push on towards the autumn after that. He’s possibly going to The Gong.” The seven-year-old son of Lope De Vega (Shamardal) was being prepared for another crack at the Caulfield Cup before suffering a setback. “He cut his back leg, so just a wound that took a bit of time to heal, so he had to miss a few weeks of work,” Gerard-Dubord said. “He was on track [for the spring] but after that obviously he had to miss most of the spring. We didn’t want to give him a break again and that’s why we just got him ready, give him a run or two then give him a little freshen and then push on after that. He’s a good horse. Obviously, he went from winning a Caulfield Cup, which is a handicap and then he had to go at weight-for-age in the Tancred, but he’s that kind of horse. I think he’s good enough to compete and be very competitive in those weight-for-age races.”

Third for Stay Inside

Lassified (Credit: Race Images)

Newgate Farm’s first-season sire Stay Inside (Extreme Choice) sired his third individual winner on Sunday when Lassified (2 f ex Exclusive Lass by Nicconi) landed the LA Stud 2YO (1000m) at Tauherenikau. Ridden by Craig Grylls for trainer Andrew Forsman, one of three winners for the pair, the juvenile filly defeated Vahvay (Tagaloa) by 0.4 lengths with a further 2.8 lengths back to Tifosi (Super Seth) in third. “She’s a game little filly, we really like her,” Forsman’s racing manager Joe Walker said. “She’s a real professional. She jumped, used the rail and looked the winner then just wanted to do things wrong. I think she’s tough, she’s got a good attitude for it and plenty of upside. We’ll get her home and reassess things now, but we’re very happy to kick off with that.” Out of the Listed-winning Nicconi (Bianconi) mare Exclusive Lass, Lassified was bought by Glenbeigh Farm for $70,000 at the Inglis Great Southern Weanling Sale, before selling to her trainer and Andrew Williams for $110,000 at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale. The filly is a half-sister to the Group 2-placed winner Boyfriend (Snitzel) and to fellow winners Cape Breton (Vancouver) and Midwest Princess (King’s Legacy). Stay Inside is standing for a fee of $66,000 (inc GST), up from $55,000 in 2024.

Forsman and Grylls on fire in Central Districts

Jockey Craig Grylls and trainer Andrew Forsman's winning roll continued into the Lamb Peters Print Maiden (1000m) with Nedelin (Spirit Of Boom), a Cambridge Stud homebred having his second start after finishing fifth in a strong maiden at Te Aroha won by Avantaggia (Wootton Bassett). The gelding came over the top late to pip a fast-closing Alcaraz (Per Incanto) by 0.3 lengths, with Falcrests Belle (Darci Brahma) holding on for third. “It’s a big thrill [to win for Cambridge Stud],” Forsman’s racing manager Joe Walker said. “He did a lot wrong, but he tracked a decent speed, seemed to relax well and when Craig needed him most in that last furlong he put in. He does little in his work by himself to be honest, but he saves his best for trials and races. He’s competitive, he wants to be there and wants to do it.” Forsman and Grylls prevailed in another tight finish to the Wrights Cabins and Construction R75 (1600m), with Privy Garden (So You Think) holding on by the barest of margins as she defeated Manzor Blue (Almanzor) by 0.1 lengths. The daughter of So You Think (High Chaparral) was earning a fifth win in 21 attempts and bringing her career earnings over $102,000 for the China Horse Club. “That was an interesting last 100, she’d shaken them off and I thought she’d stolen a winning margin, but then just wanted to knock off the job,” Walker said. “She’s better with a bit of sting out of the ground, she’s an autumn horse and we thought coming here today and dropping back to a mile, she’d be a very nice chance.”

Driftin sprints to impressive upset at Tauherenikau

Driftin (Merchant Navy) picked up her first win in more than two years when causing an upset in the Challenge Carterton R75 (1000m) at Tauherenikau on Sunday. The five-year-old by Merchant Navy (U S Navy Flag) had been a winner on the Cambridge Synthetic in September 2023 but was unplaced in her following six starts, after which she was purchased for $5,000 through gavelhouse.com by part-owner Andre Wallace. It was more than a year later that she stepped out at the Foxton trials in late October and put the writing on the wall with a smart win, albeit on a far different surface to the Good 4 on offer at Tauherenikau. Racing out of her grade, Driftin closed the $22 outsider in a small field and jockey Bruno Queiroz ensured she utilised the inside gate early booting up inside of the favourite Debbi Harri (Vespa). After travelling well in front, Driftin kicked clear at the 200 metres and gained a comfortable length win over the closing Debbi Harri. “We gave her a trial and we thought we would come here today being a small field,” winning trainer Buddy Lammas said. “I know she was out of her grade but 1000 metres on a good track was all she needed so we thought we’d give her a crack and see what happened. I thought she would go well but I said to the boys that we would use it as a trial being out of her grade, but you never know, we like to win trials too. They bought her off Gavelhouse and she had a year off out in the paddock, she came in and out with a few little issues but we’ve got her right now and she’s happy to be here.”

Smart an understatement for Wexford mare

Untapped four-year-old Smart Love (Savabeel) continued her stunning rise through the grades with a dominant display in the opener at Pukekohe Park on Saturday. The Lance O’Sullivan and Andrew Scott-trained daughter of Savabeel (Zabeel) had been unbeaten in her last three starts, one of those coming at the end of a brief three-year-old campaign and the latter pair this preparation. Smart Love earned red-hot $1.40 favouritism in the Majestic Horse Floats 1300 (1300m) and justified that price, aided by a perfect steer from regular rider Masa Hashizume. “She’s top class this mare,” Scott said. “Lance told me to have no plan, just jump and decide. She jumped well, I thought Marshy’s horse [Miss Rockette] would go forward more but she was coming back a bit and there was a strong pace. I could pop off and she’s a strong mare, I can make any gap. She was just travelling too well. It was unfortunate last season, we thought she could get to the Oaks and those good three-year-old races, but I think the break has done her well. At three, we thought she was going to be a 2000-metre-plus horse, but now she’s big and strong, she can run a good race at 1300-1400 metres.”

Asia

43 for Kizuna

Shadai Stallion Station’s Kizuna (Deep Impact) chalked up his 43rd individual stakes winner on Sunday when the Ryuji Okubo-trained W Heart Bond (4 f ex Persistently by Smoke Glacken) scored in the Miyako Stakes (Gr 3, 1800m) at Kyoto. Ridden by Ryusei Sakai, the four-year-old filly ran out a neck winner over Saimon Xanadu (Asia Express) with a further three lengths back to the third-placed Lord Couronne (Leontes). A half-sister to four winners, W Heart Bond is out of the Grade 1-winning mare Persistently (Smoke Glacken). Kizuna stood the 2025 northern hemisphere breeding season for a fee of ¥20,000,000 (approx. AU$200,670).

17 for Just A Way

Mystery Way (7 g ex Gypsy Highway by High Chaparral) became the 17th individual stakes winner for Just A Way when landing the Copa Republica Argentina (Gr 2, 2500m) at Tokyo on Sunday. Ridden by Hiroki Matsumoto for trainer Shinya Kobayashi, the seven-year-old gelding defeated Stinger Glass (Kizuna) by a half-length with a further head back to Dee My The Kid (Dee Majesty) in third. Racing in the silks of Shadai Race Horse Co Ltd, Mystery Way is a half-brother to the Group 2-placed winner Amalfi Coast (Daiwa Major) and four other winners being out of the Group 3-placed High Chaparral (Sadler’s Wells) mare Gypsy Highway.

International

Five for Pinatubo

Quiescent (2 f ex Stay Silent by Cape Cross) became the fifth individual stakes winner for Darley shuttler Pinatubo (Shamardal) when running out an easy scorer in Sunday’s Prix Herod (Listed, 1400m) at Saint-Cloud. Ridden by Maxime Guyon for trainer Hamad Al Jehani, the juvenile filly made it three wins on the bounce as she cleared away for a four and a half lengths success over Siciliano (Time Test) with a further three-quarters of a length back to Alarming (A’Ali) in third. Bred by Promenade Bloodstock Limited and racing in the silks of Wathnan Racing, Quiescent is the third foal out of the winning Cape Cross (Green Desert) mare Stay Silent, herself a half-sister to Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (Gr 1, 5.5f) winner Mischief Magic (Exceed And Excel) and Group 3 scorer Sound And Silence (Exceed And Excel) and a granddaughter of Fillies' Mile (Gr 1, 1m) and Irish 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) winner Gossamer (Sadler’s Wells). Pinatubo is standing at Darley’s Kelvinside base for a fee of $38,500 (inc GST).

29 for Intello

Trust On (3 c ex Xcape To Victory by Cape Cross) became the 29th individual stakes winner for Haras de Beaumont stallion Intello (Galileo) when scoring in Sunday’s Prix Tantieme (Listed, 1600m) at Saint-Cloud. The Josephine Soudan-trained colt was ridden by Marvin Grandin and defeated Silius (Dubawi) by a head, with a further four lengths back to Narkez (Siyouni) in third place. Out of the Cape Cross mare Xcape To Victory, Trust On is a half-brother to fellow Listed scorer Ice Love (Three Valleys) and the stakes-placed winner Nights On Broadway (Night Of Thunder). Intello stood the 2025 northern hemisphere breeding season at a fee of €8,000 (approx. AU$14,260).

76 for Wootton Bassett

The Francis Graffard-trained Moon Cloud (3 f ex Sharavana by Fastnet Rock) proved too strong for her rivals in the Prix Isola Bella (Listed, 1600m) at Saint-Cloud on Sunday. The filly provided late Coolmore shuttler Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj) with his 76th individual stakes winner when she defeated Celestial Orbit (No Nay Never) by two and a half lengths. Love Dynasty (Dubawi) finished a further length and a half back in third. Bred by Ecurie Des Monceaux and Lordship Stud, Moon Cloud was bought by David Redvers for €220,000 at the Arqana August Sale in 2023 and the filly now races for Qatar Racing. The filly is out of the unraced mare Sharavana (Fastnet Rock), making her a half-sister to Grade 3 winner Faith In Humanity (Lope De Vega). Out of Mydarshaan (Darshaan), Sharavana is a half-sister to Group 1 winner Indonesienne (Muhtathir). Wootton Bassett died while on shuttle duty at Coolmore Australia this year.

199 for Fastnet Rock

Late Coolmore stallion Fastnet Rock (Danehill) moved one closer to a double century of individual stakes winners when his daughter Alluring Angel (5 m ex All Of Me by Teofilo) took out the Long Island Stakes (Gr 3, 11f) at Aqueduct on Saturday. Trained by Bill Mott, the mare defeated the Graham Motion-trained No Show Sammy Jo (Lope De Vega) by a length and a quarter with the runner-up’s stablemate, Beach Bomb (Lancaster Bomber), another half-length away in third. British-Bred Alluring Angel was purchased by her owner Lawrence Goichman for 48,000gns at the Tattersalls December Mares Sale in 2020. Alluring Angel is out of the winning Teofilo (Galileo) mare All Of Me, herself a sister to Group 2 scorer I Can Fly and she in turn produced Listed winner and Group 1-placed January (Kingman). Fastnet Rock died at Coolmore Australia last September.

Double for Tiz The Law

Tiz The Law (Constitution), a resident at Coolmore’s Ashford Stud, scored a stakes double at Aqueduct on Saturday, moving his tally of individual black-type winners to nine. The double was kicked off by Tiz Dashing’s (3 c ex Breaking Beauty by Into Mischief) victory in the Hill Prince Stakes (Gr 3, 9f), before Fully Subscribed (3 f ex Sweetbaby by Candy Ride) dominated proceedings in the Mother Goose Stakes (Gr 2, 9f). Trained by Barclay Tagg, Tiz Dashing stayed on all the way to the line to beat Noble Confessor (Quality Road) by a neck, while Fully Subscribed pulled four and a half lengths clear of runner-up Drexel Hill (Bolt D’Oro). Tiz The Law will stand the 2026 breeding season for a fee of US$30,000 (approx. AU$46,200).

Six for Always Dreaming

Sultana (4 f ex Private Offering by Pulpit) became the sixth individual stakes winner for late WinStar Farm stallion Always Dreaming (Bodemeister) when scoring in the Maple Leaf Stakes (Gr 3, 10f) at Woodbine on Saturday. Ridden by Rafael Manuel Hernandez for trainer Kevin Attard, the four-year-old filly defeated Queens Command (War Command) by a head with a further length back to Dancing N Dixie (Neolithic) in third. Out of the winning Pulpit (A.P. Indy) mare Private Offering, Sultana is a half-sister to three winners. Always Dreaming died in 2023.

Crawford, Teetan combine for emotional G3 Sa Sa Ladies’ Purse triumph

Brett Crawford celebrated the most significant triumph of a burgeoning Hong Kong career when the South African combined with familiar ally Karis Teetan to land the HK$4.2 million (approx. AU$831,650) Sa Sa Ladies’ Purse Handicap (Gr 3, 1800m) with Encountered (Churchill) at Sha Tin on Sunday.

Saddling only his 31st starter this season since arriving at Sha Tin after a decorated South African career, Crawford exulted in a stirring victory after Teetan drove Encountered – the 2023 Sa Sa Ladies’ Purse victor – to a short-head margin over Happy Together (Dragon Pulse) and Moments In Time (Lookin At Lucky) in 1m 47.35s in front of a 34,784 crowd.

“It’s stuff that you probably couldn’t script. I’m super excited – he’s actually very similar to a Group 1 horse Karis rode at home called Jackson, he’s very similar in stature and it brought back a lot of memories,” Crawford said of Encountered.

“The guys at home have worked really hard on this horse and I can’t thank them enough. It’s a fairytale start for me – to win a Group 3 in Hong Kong within your first season is really amazing.

“I could see him making up the ground and I knew he had a good chance, but there was a horse [Happy Together] who got just ahead of us and I wasn’t sure if we were going to get him in time.

“It really came down to the wire – it was a great race. I’ve really got to give credit to Karis, he rode a really good race and put a lot of hard work into the preparation.”

Pitted against 11 Hong Kong International Races nominees, Encountered reprised his best form to charge from eighth on the home turn, clocking 23.36s, to win his first race since the 2023 Sa Sa Ladies’ Purse, while favourite Cap Ferrat (Snitzel) was eased out of the race.

Crawford said possible plans to contest the Hong Kong Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) on December 14 would hinge on the six-year-old’s recovery.

John Size (Credit: HKJC)

“We’ll go one race at a time,” Crawford said. “I’m pretty sure he will feel this race tomorrow. He’s a horse who takes his racing quite hard. We’ll enjoy the moment and reassess everything tomorrow.”

Teetan said: “Myself and Brett, we go a long way back. He gave me a chance when I was still young and he taught me a lot – not just about being a jockey, but about being a human being and how to deal with life after you come out of your apprenticeship.

“He’s been a great part of my life and I’m glad that he’s here [in Hong Kong], and he’s continuously giving me support and winning this race for him just means a lot.

“I worked him [Encountered] through the week and I thought it was the best I had felt him in a long time. The horse was happy, felt good – today, the last 50 [metres], I needed him and the horse responded well.”

Teetan rode several elite winners for Crawford in South Africa and today’s Sa Sa Ladies’ Purse success marked Teetan’s third victory in the race after wins on Horse Of Fortune (Stronghold) (2016) and Ensued (Lemon Drop Kid) (2024).

Without a winner in 87 runners since September 21, 13-time champion trainer John Size launched a familiar November charge with a treble through Sight Hermoso (Headwater), Ka Ying Power (Brazen Beau) and Szeryng (Almanzor) to move to five winners for the campaign.

Following his usual pattern of making a measured start to the season before his runners hit top form in November, the Australian struck with Sight Hermoso in the Class 4 Grace One Handicap (1000m) under Brenton Avdulla, Ka Ying Power for Keith Yeung in the Class 5 Kate Tokyo Handicap (1400m) and Szeryng under Zac Purton in the Class 4 Suisse Programme Handicap (1200m).

Circuit Grand Slam (Credit: HKJC)

“Normally, as you've probably read 1,000 times, we have slow starts to seasons but as long as we get going eventually, that's the main thing,” Size said.

Circuit Grand Slam (No Nay Never) made a stunning Hong Kong debut for Manfred Man and Britney Wong by sweeping from the rear of the field to easily win the Class 3 Canmake Tokyo Handicap (1200m), clocking 45.26s for the final 800 metres to earn a PP Bonus of HK$1.5 million (approx. AU$297,020) plus the winners’ purse of HK$1.04 million (approx. AU$205,930).

A full-brother to dual Group 1 winner Blackbeard and Royal Ascot Group 2 victor Charles Darwin, the No Nay Never (Scat Daddy) gelding won over 1200 metres at the Curragh in June, 2024 when he raced as Tunbridge Wells for Aidan O’Brien.

“Before I got on, I didn’t think there was much chance of winning because he was having his first start as a European but everything went to our favour, because the race really didn’t favour the lead, it didn’t favour the fence,” Wong said.

“It was good that we could just jump neutral and we didn’t have to be up the front, we didn’t have to urge him during the race and I just had to keep him balanced and help him travel and he was still very green and I think he will improve from that.

“Certainly, he showed his ability today and so hopefully he can forward and upwards.”

Dennis Yip slotted a double with Super Love (U S Navy Flag) under Hugh Bowman in the Class 4 Elizabeth Arden Handicap (1400m) and Thriving Brothers (U S Navy Flag) for Matthew Chadwick in the Class 3 Neogence Handicap (1400m), before David Eustace’s Light Years Charm (Rubick) provided Purton with a double with a brave display in the Class 2 Santa Monica Handicap (1400m).

Matthew Poon celebrated his 32nd birthday in style when David Hall’s Mr Good Vibes (El Roca) held on tenaciously to land the Class 5 L’Oreal Paris Handicap (1600m), before James Orman drove Me Tsui’s The Auspicious (Almanzor) to a head victory over Audacious Spirit (Ardrossan) in the Class 4 La Estephe Handicap (1600m).

Hong Kong racing continues at Happy Valley on Wednesday.
