Sunlight seeker Akaysha hunts gold on the coast

A simple text message from trainer Peter Snowden told Macquarie Stud supremo David Baxter everything he needed to know as his flashy three-year-old filly Akaysha (Capitalist) bids to land a major windfall in this Saturday’s Magic Millions Sunlight Plate (1100m) at the Gold Coast.

“She’s ready to go” was the short but sweet missive Baxter received from a man he has known and trusted for the best part of five decades working together in the industry.

What's On

It was no doubt music to the ears of Baxter, who together with his sons will make the journey north to the Gold Coast on Friday ahead of the $3 million showpiece which headlines the opening day of the revamped Magic Millions Carnival.

From the moment a deal had been struck with slot holders Archer Park Racing, Snowden and Baxter set about plotting a ‘hit and run’ Queensland mission for Akaysha, which they hope culminates in them lifting a cheque for $1.2 million on the Glitter Strip.

With yearling preparations in full swing back home on the Wellington (NSW) farm he has called his office for just shy of 50 years, duty calls and so Baxter won’t be partying in Surfers Paradise should his filly do the business.

A long-time breeder, racehorse owner and bookmaker, he is also well aware of racing’s volatility and knows you can be a prince one day and a pauper the next.

That is not to say, however, that Baxter isn’t relishing the prospect of seeing Akaysha carry Macquarie Stud’s orange and black silks under the lights on Saturday evening.

Despite having narrowly failed to add to her debut victory, five of Akaysha’s six subsequent starts have been in stakes company and she has placed in three of them, including nailbiting runner-up finishes behind My Gladiola (I Am Invincible) and Marhoona (Snitzel) in the Cap d’Antibes Stakes (Listed, 1100m) and the Heritage Stakes (Listed, 1100m) respectively.

Sire: Capitalist

Dam: Zingaling

Dam's Sire: Redoute's Choice

Breeder: Macquarie Stud

After spending a fortnight in the paddock to recuperate from her spring exertions, she was brought back into work and will travel up to Queensland overnight on Wednesday ahead of the second edition of the Sunlight 3YO Plate.

“It would obviously be a dream come true to win a race worth $3 million,” Baxter told ANZ News.

“I’ve learned not to get your feet too far off the ground, because if you do you just end up hitting the ground even harder. The funerals outnumber the weddings, especially when you get to my age, but you’ve still got to have your dreams in this game.

“If she didn’t come up or either party wasn’t happy with her for whatever reason, then we would have pulled her out. But from all reports she’s been in great order, and her last bit of fast work on Saturday was excellent.

“Peter’s very busy training his horses and I’m flat out on the farm, so we don’t bother with too much small talk. He just sent me a text the other day to say she’s ready to go, so that’s good enough for me. I think she’s got a very good chance, the race should set up nicely for her and the faster they go, the better for her.”

As the final foal produced by his homebred mare Zingaling (Redoute’s Choice), who claimed both the 2010 P J Bell Stakes (Listed, 1200m) and the following year’s Birthday Card Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) for trainer Kris Lees, Akaysha was always going to hold a special place in Baxter’s heart.

Despite having produced the 2024 Ramornie Handicap (Listed, 1200m) winner Ka Bling (Capitalist) and Knit ‘n’ Purl (More Than Ready), whose progeny include stakes winner Brudenell (Russian Revolution), the precocity Akaysha has shown in her nascent career may mean the recently retired Zingaling saved her best for last.

“It’s a big thrill for us to have bred this filly, her mother and grandmother [Done That],” said Baxter, who rates Group 1 heroines Flitter (Bluebird) and Shindig (Straight Strike) amongst the finest graduates from Macquarie’s fertile pastures.

“We’ve already had plenty of returns on our investment in the family, even before the filly runs in a $3 million race. It makes all the hard work worthwhile and there’s always plenty of hard work in this game, not always with much reward.

“Unfortunately we won’t have any more siblings because we had to retire Zingaling last year. She had an ovarian cyst which we had to remove and then she missed the following season, so we decided to call it a day. She was a good race filly for us and she was a good producer as a broodmare, we have sold some of her foals for decent money so she owes us nothing and she can live out her days in one of our paddocks.

“We still own three of Akaysha’s sisters and we sold another [Knit ‘n’ Purl] in foal to Anamoe for $300,000 [to Alma Vale] at the Inglis Chairman’s Sale last year, so the family has been good to us. Before we sold Knit ‘n’ Purl she had a beautiful Anamoe filly which we’ll be taking to the Easter Sale this year and her half-sister Ringdembells, who was a pretty sharp race filly before she went amiss, is also in foal to Anamoe. I’m already getting pretty excited about that, because I’ve seen about 20 of his foals and I’m yet to come across one that I didn’t really like.”

Peter’s very busy training his horses and I’m flat out on the farm, so we don’t bother with too much small talk. He just sent me a text the other day to say she’s ready to go, so that’s good enough for me. I think she’s got a very good chance

David Baxter

The Inglis Easter Yearling Sale has been a particularly profitable auction for Macquarie Stud down the years, and it had been the intention to sell Zingaling’s final foal at the Riverside Stables complex in 2023.

However, when Lot 5 fell short of her $200,000 reserved price Baxter loaded the filly onto the truck and took her back to her birthplace, before sending her to Snowden’s Randwick stables.

The positive early reports were fully vindicated when Akaysha won on debut at Kembla Grange in a slick time, in the process beating home her high-profile stablemate and subsequent stakes winner Beadman (Snitzel).

After her highly creditable efforts in the Alinghi Stakes (Listed, 1100m) and the Red Roses (Gr 3, 1100m) during the Victorian Spring Racing Carnival, the team at Archer Park had seen enough promise in the filly and so an offer to secure her services was made on their behalf by leading bloodstock agent Jim Clarke.

The Queensland-based syndicators, one of 12 slot holders who have paid $175,000 each, had previously teamed up with Snowden to run Zealously (Harry Angel) in the inaugural edition of the Sunlight Plate 12 months ago.

A similar arrangement was swiftly reached 12 months on and having come through a pre-Christmas trial in fine fettle, Akaysha has been building very nicely towards her moment in the sun.

Since winning over 1000 metres on debut, Akaysha has raced exclusively over the Sunlight distance of 1100 metres and with a fierce tempo likely to play into the backmarker’s hands, it is easy to see why the filly currently holds third favouritism behind smart colt Grafterburners (Graff), who will be partnered by James McDonald.

While respectful of Kelly Schweida’s winning machine, the bookmaker in Baxter believes his current quote of $2.80 offers limited value and, given the potential upside, he is perhaps more wary of another interstate raider in Ice Kool (Zoustar) who remains unbeaten in his two starts for Warwick Farm trainer David Pfieffer.

Given Akaysha’s tendency to sit back before unleashing late, Tom Sherry may need the luck of the Irish if the Dublin-born jockey is to plot a path to victory from barrier one. But despite the apparent setback, Baxter is adamant he wouldn’t swap his girl for anything.

“It looks a really nice race for her first-up,” he said.

“We gave her three spaced-out runs in Melbourne in the spring, and even though she didn’t win she went really well in all three. When she got back to Sydney after Oaks Day, the plan was to give her a break.

“But she was jumping out of her skin, and the guys from Archer Park happened to give me a call to ask us about running her in the Sunlight. I left it up to Peter and he said she’s well enough, so she only had a fortnight in the paddock before returning to the stables and getting ready for this.

“She goes particularly well fresh, and if you look at her first-up run in the Cap d’Antibes at Flemington, it was a terrific effort. If she can replicate that on Saturday, she’ll have a great chance.”

Regardless of the result on Saturday, Akaysha is likely to head for a brief spell with a view to picking off a stakes race at the end of the autumn carnival which would rubber stamp her future as a broodmare.

Whether that future lies at Macquarie or elsewhere is entirely dependent on the size of any offers which may be received. In an ideal world, once her racing days are done the filly would return to the farm where she took her first steps to continue the family legacy, but, like most boutique breeders, Baxter is realistic enough to concede that sentiment doesn’t put food on the table.

“The plan at this stage is for her to join our broodmare band on the farm, but if the right offer came along then we’d obviously have to consider it,” he said.

“We’ve had a bit of interest in her in the past, but so far it hasn’t come to anything. I always tell people that I can’t stop them making an offer and I dare say there may be a bit more interest in her if she managed to win on Saturday or picked up a stakes race along the journey, but we’ll worry about that if and when it happens. It’s a pretty good position for us to be in, so we’ll just enjoy ourselves on Saturday and then see what the future holds.”

Twilight Tale tops Magic Millions Digital Sale

Lot 42: Twilight Tale (Credit: Magic Millions)

Stakes-performed Savabeel (Zabeel) mare Twilight Tale topped the Magic Millions Digital Sale on Wednesday when selling to New Zealand interests Go Racing and Blandford Bloodstock for $115,000.

The four-year-old, who was one of a handful of quality lots offered by Western Australia's Peters Investments, is a two-time winner, including a metropolitan success, and has already placed twice at stakes level.

"The quality of the horses on offer demanded that we had to take the sale seriously," Go Racing's Albert Bosma said. "We found the platform very easy to use. We actually had two of us watching the bidding on separate devices as it was closing and were amazed how responsive it was, even though we were bidding from rural New Zealand.”

Peters Investments presented six lots at the sale and their other top sellers included blue-blooded Regal Statue (Nicconi) – a sister to Group 1 winner Graceful Girl out of Group 2 winner Avenida Madero (Metal Storm) – who went to Davison Racing for $90,000.

"Recently we've been doing our best to reduce numbers with so many young horses coming through, so sometimes these well-bred and performed mares are the ones that put their hands up to be moved on," Liam Peters noted.

"It was great to see them get good results in the sale and we wish all their connections the best."

Some 55 lots sold across the afternoon with a gross of $739,100 and clearance rate of over 73 per cent which will continue to rise as more private deals are finalised in the coming days.

Other good prices achieved for racehorses on the day included the Newgate pair of Quietly Arrogant (Capitalist) ($65,000) and Lyon (Zoustar) ($60,000), Arrowfield's Rematch (Real Impact) ($32,500) and Star Thoroughbreds' Mannerheim (Dundeel) ($22,500).

"As soon as entries closed the team worked hard canvassing buyers for this sale and this was reflected with who participated," Magic Millions head of digital Bryce Bevan said. "From this point forward we are running auctions on a fortnightly basis and the whole team is determined to carry this momentum forward for the rest of the year.”

The focus of the Magic Millions team is now firmly on the 2026 Gold Coast Yearling Sale, with official inspections underway and selling to commence on Tuesday.

Inhabit chasing millions berth via Gold Pearl

South Australian trainer Michael Hickmott remains hopeful that talented juvenile Inhabit (Stay Inside) can force her way into this year’s Magic Millions 2YO Classic, (RL, 1100m) with Saturday’s Gold Pearl (1100m) at the Gold Coast set to decide her fate. The filly is currently 22nd in order of entry with $41,300 in prize-money, outside the $3 million feature’s 16-horse field limit plus five emergencies, but will have the opportunity to climb the rankings in the $150,000 Gold Pearl. “I couldn’t be happier with her,” Hickmott told Racing.com. “I’ve travelled a lot of horses to various parts of Australia in my time and rarely have I had one travel as straightforward. She’s well-hydrated, hasn’t left an ounce of feed, hasn’t taken a step sideways in her work.” Inhabit was an impressive debut winner at Murray Bridge in October before finishing third at Morphettville on December 6 after experiencing atrial fibrillation. “Unfortunately, when she went around last start at $1.20 and had atrial fibrillation, that extra prize-money would have been really handy,” Hickmott said. Hickmott expects the filly will need to finish in the top three or four on Saturday to secure a Classic start, with a strong field assembled for the Gold Pearl. “At the nominations stage, the race profiles significantly stronger than in previous years and, apart from Tony Gollan’s colt [Itchintogo], it looks stronger than the colts’ division [the Gold Nugget],” he said. “Realistically, I think she’d need to finish in top-three, maybe top-four to make the field.” Bred by Chris Barham and Binalong Bloodstock and purchased by Hickmott for $200,000 from Segenhoe Stud at last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Inhabit is owned by an all-female syndicate and would be eligible for the Magic Millions women’s bonus should she qualify.

Zahra back as Tentyris tunes up

Tentyris (Credit: Sportpix)

Mark Zahra will return to race-day action at Flemington on Saturday after a midweek jump-out aboard potential 2026 star Tentyris (Street Boss) at Mornington. The Melbourne premiership-leading jockey partnered the Anthony and Sam Freedman-trained three-year-old in an 800-metre heat on Wednesday, where the Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner finished fourth, about 2.5 lengths behind stablemate Tropicus (Too Darn Hot). The session focused on the colt’s behaviour following his late scratching at the gates on the final day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival. “It was more important this morning about his barrier [manners] – obviously his last run he got scratched out of Champions Sprint when he reared up and went into the stall next door – but his barrier manners were perfect,” Zahra told SENTrack. “[With] no blinkers on, he was there just having a nice time and trialled really good. To the line he was smoking up right behind, so I couldn't have been happier.” Tentyris is expected to resume in the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) at Flemington on February 14. Zahra, who has not ridden since the Zipping Classic meeting at Sandown on November 29, still leads the Melbourne Jockeys’ Premiership on 36 wins. He has four rides at Flemington on Saturday, headed by Aviatress (Smart Missile) in the $200,000 Standish Handicap (Gr 3, 1200m), and confirmed he will remain in Melbourne rather than travel north for Magic Millions Raceday. “I spoke to my management crew and there's nothing really I could pick up [at the Gold Coast],” he said. “I used to go and pick up a few rides just so I can go up there and enjoy myself around the Gold Coast for a weekend, but after five weeks up that area I've probably seen enough. I reckon I'll stay in Melbourne and focus on getting the eye in and weight down and having a crack down here for the next couple of weeks.”

Knobelas targets revenge on Roadcone at Flemington

Knobelas (Belardo) will get another shot at Roadcone (Almanzor) this Saturday in the $130,000 Henry Byron Moore BM84 Handicap at Flemington, with co-trainer Michael Kent Jnr confident the setting suits his charge. The 1600-metre clash comes three weeks after their 1500-metre battle at Caulfield Heath, which Roadcone narrowly won. "She's obviously very progressive; six starts for three wins and three seconds and one more stride and she gobbles up Roadcone last time," Kent, who trains Knobelas with Mick Price, said. "Naturally we're looking forward to the big spacious track of Flemington versus Caulfield Heath, which probably undid her a bit. She looks to be a really nice horse for the future and third-up on Saturday, we should be close to our peak fitness." Knobelas’ Caulfield Heath run followed a first-up win over 1400 metres at Pakenham, her first start since finishing second in the Silver Bowl Series Final (1600m) at Flemington in July. The filly, ridden by Beau Mertens, meets Roadcone 1.5 kilograms better for the last-start defeat and will jump from barrier two, with Roadcone drawn nine. "She's a no-frills horse and gives you no feel at home – I've often said she's probably one of the worst trackworkers – but you don't judge how she's going off a trackwork form," Kent said. "I don't think she's ever won a trial, but she just goes to raceday and when you ask her to quicken, she just goes ‘vroom.’ She's very progressive. We've got to be optimistic that we can get some black type with her at some point, because she has got a lot of traits that make a black type mare. She's got tactical speed, travels well, relaxes, and then she's got a big turn of foot at the end."

Gallant Star earns Lakes Mile shot

Gallant Star (Credit: Sportpix)

Gallant Star (Zoustar) is winless this campaign but trainer Brett Robb believes his consistency warrants a tilt at Saturday’s $500,000 Lakes Mile (1600m) at Wyong. The Dubbo-trained gelding will make his fifth start of the preparation and step up to a mile for the first time following a strong run of form, highlighted by a first-up second in the $2 million The Kosciuszko (1200m) and a narrow third to Lakes Mile favourite Know Thyself (The Autumn Sun) at Randwick on December 20. “The last couple of starts we've been happy with him and have been aiming for this one since,” Robb said. “We've been looking to step him up to the mile and I think we've found the right race to do it.” Braith Knock will ride Gallant Star, who carries 54 kilograms and jumps from barrier ten in the field of 14 plus one emergency. While untried at 1600 metres, the son of Zoustar (Northern Meteor) has been beaten outside the top four only twice in 22 starts, a record that continues to fuel Robb’s confidence. “Every time I think he's just about found his level he steps up,” Robb said. “Every time he goes out and comes back, he just keeps getting better and better with age. You look at his record and he's never gone out there and run a bad race.” Purchased for $200,000 at Inglis Classic and later sold unraced for $32,500 via Inglis Digital in 2022, Gallant Star has since earned more than $1.2 million. Part-owner, former Australian cricketer, Kerry O’Keeffe is set to be on course for the race.

Yes Yes Yes gelding makes it three straight

Matt Hoysted’s progressive gelding Yoyo Yeeyz (Yes Yes Yes) added a third consecutive victory with a strong win over 1000 metres at Eagle Farm on Wednesday. The four-year-old has not looked back since breaking his maiden in July, winning each start since, all at Eagle Farm over the same distance and with Damian Thornton in the saddle. His latest success came in a slick 56.79 seconds, the fastest of his three victories. Jumping from the outside gate in a field of five, Yoyo Yeeyz was slow away before Thornton urged him forward to settle outside the Tony Gollan-trained favourite Spiethtacular (Spieth). Held together for much of the race, the gelding took time to fully lengthen when asked but once balanced proved too strong late, edging clear to score by 0.6 lengths. “He likes to go fast and once he stepped slow, it took away that asset that we know he does have and he had to adapt," Hoysted said. “Thankfully, he was still good enough. When he gets things his own way – he’s a bit of a control freak – he can be much more effective. He’s still learning and far from the finished product.” A half-brother to Oakleigh Plate (Gr 1, 1100m) winner Uncommon James (Cable Bay), Yoyo Yeeyz is bred and raced by Lavin Park Racing and Breeding. Yes Yes Yes, who stood the most recent season at Gooree Park Stud for $16,500 (inc GST), will be represented by three lots at the upcoming Magic Millions Yearling Sale, including the Coolmore-consigned Lot 577, a brother to last season’s ATC Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) runner-up Firm Agreement.

Catkins filly wins on debut for Waller

Chris Waller will win bigger races than Wednesday’s second event at Warwick Farm in 2026, but his satisfaction following Nandina’s (So You Think) debut success went well beyond a midweek maiden. The So You Think (High Chaparral) filly is out of Catkins (Dubawi), one of Waller’s early stars and a mare who helped shape the trainer’s rise to the top of the sport. While Catkins never claimed a Group 1, she won 16 races, including five at Group 2 level and five Group 3 victories, and placed five times at the elite-level. Only Winx (Street Cry) won more races for Waller, and Nandina’s victory carried added significance as the first debut winner from Catkins’ five foals to race. The filly had six trials across three preparations before stepping out and showed the benefit of that education when finishing strongly to run down $1.85 favourite Manukau (Lonhro) and score by 0.3 lengths under Kerrin McEvoy. "Obviously she's well-bred, we've just taken our time with her, her mum was the same," Waller said. "Big shoes to fill, but she's on her way. Well done to the Ingham family who raced Catkins and subsequently bred this lovely filly." Waller capped the day with another winner courtesy of Man Of Worth (Sea The Stars), ridden by James McDonald at his first Sydney meeting since Golden Eagle Day. The imported Sea The Stars (Cape Cross) gelding cruised home by two lengths in the Benchmark 72 (1600m), making it back-to-back wins following a Randwick maiden on Boxing Day. "He's lovely and progressive, he gives you a great feel, he's got a great turn of foot and he'll probably stay a bit further too, so he's in for a bright future," McDonald said.

Blue-blooded Erin Jo gets off the mark

Another three-year-old filly with celebrated pedigree to make their presence felt at Warwick Farm on Wednesday was Erin Jo (I Am Invincible), a daughter of champion mare Lucia Valentina (Savabeel), who broke her maiden at her third start. A $700,000 Inglis Easter purchase from the Elsdon Park draft for John Singleton, Erin Jo justified favouritism in the $100,000 Super Maiden (1400m), finishing strongly along the rail under Chad Schofield to score a narrow victory over Our Huntress (Ardrossan). Trained by Kris Lees, like her dam, the I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) filly is the second winner from four foals to race out of Savabeel’s (Zabeel) triple Group 1 heroine Lucia Valentina, who died in 2024, and is a half-sister to Group 1-placed Luella Cristina (Snitzel). Lucia Valentina’s final foal, a colt by Per Incanto (Street Cry), sold for $550,000 at Inglis Easter last year to Parnham Racing and Ridgeport and has since been named Lucanto.

Frosty Night breakthrough delivers emotional first for Barry

Frosty Night’s (Frosted) long-awaited maiden victory at Terang on Friday carried added significance for her trainer Jamie Barry. Held together under Jason Maskiell, the mare proved too strong at start 26, giving Barry, who has just four horses in work, his first winner in his own name at his local track. “I was ultra happy,” Barry told Racing.com. “My post-race interview wasn’t great, because I get emotional when family is around. It just means a lot. We celebrate winners wherever we get them. It was a bit more special that it was my first winner in my own name at my home track. It’s been coming. She’s been running very well without quite getting the top dong, so it was great to see.” Frosty Night had been a model of consistency leading into the race, placing in seven of her previous 12 starts and finishing a narrow second over 1400 metres at her prior outing, the form out of that race having been franked since. Despite drawing barrier 18, Barry felt the mare would be competitive if she could reproduce that effort over 1200 metres. “When you’re within half-a-length of one of Lindsey Smith’s [Move The Torana] that’s run in very good races down in Tasmania, I thought she’d go close if she could repeat that at 1200,” he said. But then I got the horror draw and wasn’t even sure if I was doing the right thing running her. Jason’s a pretty strong rider, and he summed it up really well to get across. I was more confident with us having the inside… thankfully she kept going.” With the maiden out of the way, Barry is hopeful the Frosted (Tapit) mare can add to her tally in suitable country races. “She’s got that ability to make her own luck,” he said. “She should be able to pick up another one somewhere.”

Werribee rescheduled

Racing Victoria (RV) has deferred Friday’s scheduled meeting at Werribee to Monday, January 12, due to forecast extreme heat. Temperatures are expected to reach 41 degrees in Werribee on Friday afternoon. The change was made in the interests of horse and participant welfare. Acceptances have been deferred by 48 hours and will now close at 9am on Friday, January 9, with all race distances remaining unchanged. RV explored alternative options before selecting Monday as the most suitable date, as no other Victorian meeting is scheduled for that day. The organisation’s Procedure for Racing in Hot Weather Policy will continue to apply to ensure the health and wellbeing of horses and participants.

Vale Loving Gaby

Loving Gaby, the superfast daughter of I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit), has died. Crowned Australia’s Champion 3YO Filly in 2019-20, Loving Gaby’s four wins were spearheaded by her victories in the Manikato Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) and William Reid Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m), while her record also included five placings at the highest level. Since her retirement, Loving Gaby produced four foals, her first was Just Like Gaby (Pierata), purchased for $800,000 at the Gold Coast, has won three times, while her second, now named Glory Of Love (Snitzel), was bought for $400,000 at the same sale in 2024. Her third will be offered by Vinery Stud as Lot 493 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale which begins on Tuesday. She delivered a colt by Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj) in 2025. According to the stud book, Loving Gaby died in November last year.

Te Akau three-year-olds ready for Ellerslie tests

Mark Walker and Sam Bergerson have four runners set for Ellerslie this weekend as three-year-olds continue to be assessed ahead of the New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m). Day One (Wootton Bassett) is one of 13 Derby nominations for the stable, impressing over 1600 metres at just his second start last month, and is expected to handle Sunday’s Gingernuts Salver (Listed, 2100m) with ease. “He’s bred to get the distance and we’re certainly looking forward to seeing him step up in trip, but it’s probably a stronger field than we’ve seen in past runnings and he’s one of a number of strong prospects,” Bergerson said. “He’s a really nice progressive horse, a big raw type who’s going the right way, so with a view to his chances of making it to the Derby, we’re keen to see how he performs on Sunday.” Day One is an Elsdon Park homebred under the JML Bloodstock banner, out of Eleonora (Makfi), a grand-daughter of Hall of Fame stayer Ethereal (Rhythm) and herself a middle-distance Group 3 winner on both sides of the Tasman. In the juvenile race, Zaharias (Super Seth) resumes after finishing second in two late spring starts. “We don’t know how well that form from her first two starts stacks up,” Bergerson said, “but we’re very happy with her, she’s well drilled and has a handy draw.” Blueblood colt King’s English (Snitzel) tackles city class for the first time after clearing maiden grade at Te Aroha in late November. “This looks a sharp enough field too, but he’s a decent sort of colt, he’s drawn to get the right trip, and what he does will give us a line on whether he can go to a race like the Almanzor Trophy back at Ellerslie later in the month,” Bergerson said.

Six of the best at Magics

Here, in lot order, is a guide to six yearlings likely to be among the top picks at next week’s Magic Millions Gold Coast sale.

Breeding: B c (rig) Written Tycoon - Away Game by Snitzel
Consignor: Yulong
DOB: 21-08-24

Yulong is making a huge splash at the Coast this year, with 69 lots catalogued (ten have been withdrawn) - a drastic increase from the 23 they sold there last year.

Reflecting Zhang’s massive investment in broodmares in the past five to ten years, the draft is quality-packed, but none of their yearlings come better credentialed than this colt.

He’s the second foal of Away Game, Australia’s Champion 2YO Filly of 2019-20 after winning four stakes races that season including the rich Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m). She later added seconds in two Group 1 sprints.

Away Game’s trainer Ciaron Maher teamed with US mega buyer John Stewart in paying $1.8 million at the Gold Coast last year for the sister to this colt. The mating exploits the highly successful cross of Written Tycoon over Snitzel (48 runners, four stakes winners, three at Group 1 level in Private Life, Velocious and Captured By Love).

“Physically, he’s an A-plus yearling, one we’d be excited to take to any sale in the world, and he’ll be one that’s well found. There’ll be plenty of people flying in to see him,” said Yulong’s sales and nominations manager Harry King.

“He’s got great muscle definition, a very balanced body, and an exceptionally strong hip with a good strong forearm. I guess he’s the quintessential in what everyone would look for in a nice colt like this.

“In terms of pedigree, it’s a very active family with no passengers. He’s Written Tycoon over a champion two-year-old mare. He’s certainly a yearling you could aim high with. Take your pick at the feature two-year-old races. We’d be very confident he’d be competitive in those at this time next year.

“He’s from a sireline that’s a proven Golden Slipper/Blue Diamond sireline, and obviously Ole Kirk [by Written Tycoon] was a champion three-year-old and Guineas winner.

“And he’s out of a champion two-year-old by Snitzel. If you’re chasing a Group 1 colt, start with this cross.”

Breeding: Ch c Snitzel - Iffranesia by Iffraaj
Consignor: Arrowfield Stud
DOB: 02-09-24

At the Gold Coast last May, racegoers watching the Ken Russell Classic (Gr 3, 1200m) had their breath taken away when Beadman (Snitzel) won far more impressively than even his odds-on quote suggested, spearing away by 8.3 lengths.

Now, here’s the next member of the family, a full-brother who co-breeders Arrowfield believe is every bit as impressive as Beadman, who himself fetched a hefty $900,000 at this sale two years ago when bought by the China Horse Club/Newgate axis, and who added two Sydney spring stakes placings after that Ken Russell blitz.

By the late, great Snitzel, this colt has a page laced with black type, starting with his dam Iffranesia, who’s a bit of rarity in these parts as a French mare known for speed, with nine wins up to 1100 metres including a Chantilly Listed, to go with three stakes placings.

The colt’s breeders went back to the well in Snitzel after the dam had a year off after bearing Beadman, and the result appears an ideal replica of that runner.

“He’s a beautiful horse, a magnificent individual, and an outstanding mover,” said Arrowfield’s bloodstock manager Jon Freyer. “In fact I’d say he’s as good a colt as we’ve seen in a good while.

“He’s out of a speedy French mare who had a lot of talent, and I think she’s obviously making it as a broodmare.

“He’s a horse that fills the eye because he’s just got so much presence about him. He always has from when he was a foal and a weanling.

“When you went into a paddock of weanlings, he was the star, and he’s been a star all his life. He’s the star of our draft and he might be the star of the sale.”

Snitzel over Iffraaj has four winners from five runners including one stakes victor.

Breeding: B c Snitzel - Loving Gaby by I Am Invincible
Consignor: Vinery Stud
DOB: 19-09-24

Vinery presents this strapping individual who’s recently been made more valuable through unfortunate circumstances.

He’s the third foal of elite speedster Loving Gaby, winner of two 1200-metre Moonee Valley Group 1s in the Manikato and William Reid Stakes, plus two other Group races.

Not only are they not making Snitzels any longer, following his death last June, sadly Loving Gaby also died in November.

Her first foal and only runner Just Like Gaby has somewhat emulated her mother by winning twice at Moonee Valley, as well as another victory at Sandown, amid 11 stars.

This colt presents as a particularly striking, beautifully coloured type, who Vinery expect to turn heads and sell well.

“He’s a nice colt - a very typical Snitzel,” said the stud’s general manager Adam White.

“He’s a great mover with a really good athletic walk on him, and when you consider everything - with pedigree and physique - he’d be the stand-out in our draft.

“He’s a very strong, forward looking colt and he’s got a great brain on him, so I’d expect him to get up and go early, as most Snitzels do.

“The main thing is his strength, plus he’s got a good amount of bone underneath him as well, which is what Snitzels are renowned for and why they run as two-year-olds.

“He’s good natured, and just a really nice horse - pretty much what you’d like to see by that stallion out of a mare who raced to the highest level.”

Breeding: B c All Too Hard - Mid Summer Music by Oamaru Force
Consignor: Cressfield
DOB: 01-09-24

We all know the spiel about what stunning individuals most yearlings are at sales.

Well, you won’t hear it about this boy.

But what breeder Cressfield does promise is 100 per cent racehorse toughness.

He’s a brother to dual elite winner Stefi Magnetica, with the pair being by Vinery’s thoroughly proven stallion All Too Hard and out of another top-tier victor in Mid Summer Music. That mare - who died soon after this colt was born, leaving him to be foster-raised - also has the Group 3-winning Hellfest (Fastnet Rock) among her brood.

“You wouldn’t say he’s a stunning looking individual,” Cressfield’s general manager Wayne Bedggood said, as a thousand past studmasters turned in their graves.

“But he’s a nice horse. Stefi’s probably still no movie star either, but she’s grown out and looks alright now.

“He’s very much like his mum to look at, in body shape. He’s average sized, very muscular and strong, and he’s got his dad’s head. Mum’s body; Dad’s head.

“The All Too Hards mostly aren’t the prettiest-headed horses. But this guy is just a real tough individual. I’ve worked with him all the way through, and I love working with him. You can’t knock him up. I’m not too sure how far he’ll run, but he’ll run all day.

“The All Too Hard people know they’re not the best looking individuals,” he continued, hopefully referring to the stock not the people, “but when I say he’s not so good looking, he does have a good body and is quite a presentable animal.

“He’s got the Roman nose of the All To Hards, which I happen to like because I’m an All Too Hard fan. I think it adds to his character.

“He’s got a good mentality. He will just gobble up whatever trainers throw at him. He loves it. The more he’s doing the happier he is. He’ll work all day.”

Aside from Mid Summer Music’s elite deeds, the colt’s fourth dam was Black Satin (Linacre), winner of the Irish 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m).

Breeding: B/br c Zoustar - Solar Charged by Charge Forward
Consignor: Widden Stud
DOB: 24-08-24

By Australia’s reigning champion sire Zoustar, this colt’s page speaks for itself in that not only does it show he’s a brother to the outstanding Sunlight, but there is only room for one dam on it.

That extremely rare distinction is all down to the mighty Solar Charged (Charge Forward), who’s making a strong case for blue hen status.

A dual Group 3 winner herself, Solar Charged has had 11 foals up to this one, which also helps fill the page by herself.

They’re topped of course by Sunlight, the triple top-tier winning sprinter - including of the Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m), which helped her become Australia’s Champion 3YO Filly in 2018-19.

Solar Charged has had two other stakes winners in Sisstar (Zoustar) and Clean Energy (Zoustar), both of whom boast a Group 3 and Listed victory. There’s also Sheikha (Sebring) and Dio (Zoustar), who are both stakes-placed.

And this stand-out page is complemented by the fact the colt is an imposing physical specimen, according to Widden’s Antony Thompson.

“He’s a very impressive type,” Thompson said. “The thing that stands out is just his strength and his power. He’s just a very well-muscled horse, he’s very strong, he’s got the size and scope and has a good bone to carry it. He’s the male version of Sunlight, but with a lot more strength and bulk.

“He’s got a super pedigree, and he’s a good sound, strong horse; a very forward going type who’s a very good example of a Zoustar.”

Zoustar over Charge Forward has yielded ten winners from 11 runners including three at stakes level (27 per cent).

Breeding: B f I Am Invincible - Stellar Pauline by Not A Single Doubt
Consignor: Yarraman Park
DOB: 06-08-24

Yarraman is delighted with its 33-lot draft at this year’s sale, and one of their finest is this well-pedigreed filly by their all-conquering triple champion sire I Am Invincible.

She’s the second foal of Stellar Pauline (Not A Single Doubt), a city winner who was thrice stakes placed, including when second in the Gold Coast’s Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) behind Away Game.

Stellar Pauline is also a sister to Secret Agenda, who won the SAJC Robert Sangster Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) plus four other stakes races, and has shown her broodmare prowess by leaving Group 2 winner Hidden Motive (Capitalist).

Second dam Negotiate (Red Ransom) has had 12 winners from as many runners and has thrown three others stakes-placed runners, and the dams of two Group victors. On a page deep with black type, third dam Euphoria (Marauding) won Randwick’s Champagne Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m).

“We’ve got a lot of good I Am Invincibles this year and this is certainly one of the better ones,” said Yarraman’s Arthur Mitchell.

“She’s a good second foal - a lovely medium-sized filly with a nice big backside and a good head. She’s a typical, strong Vinnie, and she was an early foal and looks like being one of the earlier Vinnies.

“She’s got a great walk and a good temperament, and was very well received at our yearling parades. She really ticks all the boxes.”
