While she may have set an incredibly high benchmark with her inaugural draft at the 2025 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale, Hannah Penfold is determined to match, if not succeed, that success at Oaklands Junction this year.

Penfold Thoroughbreds hit the sales jackpot 12 months ago when Lot 428, a colt by one of Europe’s most exciting stallions in Mehmas (Acclamation), was knocked down for $420,000 to Flemington-based trainer Dom Sutton and his trusted bloodstock agent Johnny McKeever.

What's On

It was far from beginner’s luck or an overnight success story – Penfold has fully immersed herself in Australia’s breeding industry since arriving from her native England 12 years ago – but the scale of that sale still took her by considerable surprise, especially since the colt’s reserve price had been set at $50,000 (the initial bid was lodged at twice that figure).

Second album syndrome has afflicted many bands that burst onto the scene but subsequently fail to build on their heady success, and Penfold is aware that last year’s breakout hit has inevitably increased the weight of expectation on her shoulders 12 months on.

But with 11 lots by established stars such as Toronado (High Chaparral) alongside offerings by exciting freshman sire Artorius (Flying Artie) and Darley’s emerging powerhouse Ghaiyyath (Dubawi), Penfold is confident that her boutique operation can build on those firm foundations and justify the heavy workload she and her small team have collectively endured in the build-up.

“We may have set the bar a little too high last year,” she told ANZ News on a busy day of inspections at Oaklands Junction, where the action will get underway from 10am on Sunday morning.

“But we’ve been really busy so far, so that’s always a good sign. It’s very full-on because we’ve only got a small team, but I’m certainly not complaining. We’ve got a lovely draft but you can never predict what’s going to happen at the sales, and last year taught me to expect the unexpected. Our main goal as always is just to do everything we possibly can to get the best possible results for our clients.

“I never thought we’d get anywhere close to that price for the Mehmas colt here last year, but then we probably thought we would get a bit more for another colt by Palace Pier [bought by Ciaron Maher for $70,000]. The beauty of sales is that everyone has a different opinion, which is why they work so well because there’s something for everyone.

“Of course, it would be lovely to have another big result this year but we probably can’t expect it. You always get nervous, but I wouldn’t say there’s pressure to repeat that again this year. It probably helps that we’ve got a completely different set of clients than last year, so it’s almost like we’re starting afresh.”

Hannah Penfold

Like most breeders whose affection for the babies under their constant care precludes them from showing any favouritism, Penfold is hesitant to nominate a standout lot but when pushed she concedes that their Ghaiyyath filly (Lot 116) has been particularly well inspected so far.

Given that her half-brother Rabtat (Adelaide) registered four city wins in succession for Michael Hickmott last year, and her old man sired arguably Australia’s next superstar in Observer, there is likely to be plenty of interest in a filly who made a striking first impression on Penfold.

“She was sent over to us by [South Australian hobby breeders] Greg and Wendy Barber, and I couldn’t believe my eyes when she first got off the truck,” said Penfold.

“I accepted her into our draft unseen, and I’m very glad I did because she is just an absolute standout. The moment she turned up, my jaw just hit the floor because she’s just an absolute cracker, so we’re very lucky to have her.”

Another prized lot amongst the draft is their colt (Lot 560) by Wooded (Wootton Bassett), one of Penfold’s favourite sires. Penfold runs the yearling preparation business herself but still spends the breeding season at Swettenham Stud, where Wooded stands for $16.500 (inc. GST).

While Toronado remains the farm’s flagbearer, Penfold readily concedes she has a sentimental attachment to Wooded who sired his first elite-level winner when his colt Woodshauna claimed last year’s Prix Jean Prat (Gr 1, 1400m) at Deauville.

“He’s just a lovely, forward colt,” said Penfold, who despite not coming from an equine background got her first experience of a stud farm in England at the age of 12.

“He’s got a great attitude and work ethic, and he’s handling everything really well so far. He’s from a great family and I’m probably a little bit biased because I just love Wooded’s progeny. We sold a Wooded colt for $160,000 last year, so it would be lovely if we could get a similar result this time.”

That colt, who was acquired by New Zealand-based Kendall Bloodstock, is yet to trial but the Mehmas colt (now named Rakan) was sighted in a jump-out just before Christmas, finishing third in the 800-metre hit-out on his home track.

Sutton sent him for a spell with a view to getting him ready for the early part of spring, with the initial reports suggesting that he may live up to his lofty price tag.

“I spoke to Dom earlier in the week, and he told me they’re really happy with the colt,” said Penfold.

“He’s a big, strong boy which we already knew, so I’m really excited to see what he can do when he gets to the races.

“It was also great to see another yearling we sold last year, Isle Of Mona [Royal Meeting], get to the Blue Diamond Prelude in her first prep. She was a really cheap buy [$12,000] for Nick Ryan, so he’s done a great job with her. She was a lovely filly, and I knew she was quick because she ran away from me a fair few times in the paddock.

“But out of all our yearlings, she would probably have been one of the last ones I would have expected to be up and going as a two-year-old. So again, it just goes to show that you really can’t predict how things are going to play out.”

Hannah Penfold

Indeed, the only sure bet is that, having set the alarm for 4.30am over the past few months, Penfold is desperately in need of some rest and relaxation.

Once the dust has settled on the three-day sale, she has vowed to treat herself to a well-earned holiday cruising around New Zealand in a campervan.

“I think I’m on day 75 without taking a day off, so I definitely need a break,” she said.

“My brain isn’t working that well, so I need a mental refresh and the plan is to get away for a couple of weeks. It’s hard work and a lot to think about when you go out on your own, but I spent a long time busting my backside working for other people, so I thought I may as well do that for myself.

“The long-term goal is to get my own property one day, but I’m not made of money and everything is coming out of my own pocket. We’re going along quite well at the minute, but some nice results at the sales would certainly help.”

Blue Gum Farm: the Melbourne Premier Draft That Keeps Delivering

Year after year, the Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale rewards farms that can do two things at once: present horses buyers want to race and back it up with graduates that prove themselves on the track. Blue Gum Farm has become a standout example of this formula working - again and again.

Even prior to its current ownership, Blue Gum was a dominant force at Premier, topping the vendor tables four times in the seven years leading into 2022. Under the stewardship of Jason & Melanie Stenning alongside Sean & Cathy Dingwall, the term “renaissance” isn’t hype - it reflects ongoing commercial strength, a carefully curated draft, and a reputation for producing horses that perform beyond expectations.

Those results were on full display at the 2024 Melbourne Premier Sale, where Blue Gum Farm sold 24 yearlings for $4.4 million, highlighted by the $925,000 Snitzel filly from Jestajingle that topped the sale. “The Premier Sale suits our philosophy,” said Sean Dingwall. “Buyers know they’re not just buying type here - they’re buying opportunity.”

Yet the real proof is always what happens after Oaklands Junction: the graduates that go on to success on the track. In recent seasons, Blue Gum’s Premier graduates have produced more than 100 individual winners, with a winners-to-runners strike rate exceeding 70 per cent. More telling still, over 16 per cent have gone on to become stakes performers - a figure that firmly places the farm among the elite producers of black-type talent.

Sejardan - Heartbreak and Legacy

Alongside these achievements, the past season also brought profound loss with the sudden passing of young stallion Sejardan in November 2025. “Sejardan had presence - all quality and charisma,” Dingwall reflected. “Losing him so suddenly was devastating for everyone who cared for him.”

Sejardan

Jason and Melanie Stenning echoed that sentiment. “He was a horse we believed in enormously and one who meant a great deal to our team. His loss was felt deeply by staff and breeders alike. He was athletic, full of character, and unforgettable. While his passing was heartbreaking, seeing his progeny carry his legacy forward brings real comfort.”

Confidence Confirmed in the Sale Ring

For breeders and shareholders, the most important reassurance is that Sejardan’s progeny are already validating the market’s confidence. At the 2026 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, he ranked third by average among first-season sires, while his progeny at Magic Millions and Karaka sold for up to ten times his service fee.

“It’s incredibly encouraging,” Jason Stenning said. “The market is confirming what we felt all along - that Sejardan was doing a very good job. His legacy is now in motion, and it’s exciting to see it unfold.”

Through consistent sales success, proven on-track performance, and resilience in the face of loss, Blue Gum Farm continues to define what a Melbourne Premier draft should deliver: not just type, but opportunity - and the evidence to back it up.

Morning Briefing

Australia

29 for Capitalist

Asva (6 g ex First Bloom by Dylan Thomas) became the 29th individual stakes winner for Newgate sire Capitalist (Written Tycoon) when causing a shock in Wednesday’s Launceston Cup (Gr 3, 2400m). Ridden by Jett Stanley, the Glenn Stevenson-trained gelding was sent off a $26 hope and kicked clear rounding the home turn before keeping on to defeat the fast-finishing $201 chance Zulu Angel (Zululand) by a length. Distrustful Award (Shamus Award) finished a further 0.1 lengths back in third. "I knew I had a fair horse, I put a line through the last run," Stevenson said. "He's always shown the ability, it's just been a matter of actually getting mature. It's a maturity thing that's been with him, and he's finally grown into the horse he is." A $100,000 Karaka Book 1 purchase from Mapperley Stud for Snowden Racing, Asva had 13 starts for one win with the Snowdens before being re-offered through Inglis Digital in January of 2024 where he was bought by Earl Sakareassen for $50,000. Bred by Rosemont Stud, he is a half-brother to Group 3 winner Exoboom (Exosphere) and to stakes winner Fierce Flight (Flying Artie) being out of the stakes-placed Dylan Thomas (Danehill) mare First Bloom. Capitalist stood the 2025 breeding season at a fee of $44,000 (inc GST).

Sanniya continues winning run in Vamos Stakes

The Barry Campbell-trained Sanniya (3 f Stratosphere - Lady Writer by Written Tycoon) took her career record to seven wins from just eight starts when scoring in Wednesday’s Vamos Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) at Launceston. A third stakes success for the three-year-old daughter of Stratosphere (Snitzel), Sanniya made most of the running under Craig Newitt and never looked like being caught down the home straight as she defeated Grid Girl (Time Test) by 1.8 lengths. There was a further half-length back to the third-placed Stone Cold Stunner (Palentino). Wednesday’s success made it back-to-back Group 3 wins for Sanniya after her victory in the Mystic Journey Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) on February 8.

Back-to-back Tasmanian stakes races for Steparty

Having registered his first victory since September 2023 when landing the Thomas Lyons Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at Hobart on February 8, the Paul Preusker-trained Steparty (5 g Artie Schiller - Watch Your Step by Sepoy) made it back-to-back wins in Tasmanian stakes races when taking out Wednesday’s Hellova Street Stakes (Listed, 1600m) at Launceston. Ridden by John Allen, the five-year-old gelding scored by 0.8 lengths over Cartoon Graveyard (Turffontein) with a further half-length back to Durazzo (Needs Further) in third place.

Manolo Bling tops Inglis February (Late) Online Sale at $275,000

Lot 135: Manolo Bling (Credit: Inglis)

Manolo Bling (Grunt) topped the Inglis Digital February (Late) Online Sale, which closed on Wednesday, when selling to Highgrove Stud’s Ron Gilbert for $275,000.

The four-year-old mare was offered by Anthony Freedman Racing on behalf of Rob Cummings and the mare’s ownership group.

Gilbert confirmed Manolo Bling would be transferred to Kelly Schweida’s Queensland stable and continue racing until the end of the season before joining the farm’s broodmare band.

“We’ll mix things up with her, new trainer, new surroundings, sometimes that helps these mares switch on a bit more again so we’ll try that but either way, she will go to stud later this year,’’ Gilbert said.

“I haven’t sat down and given a stallion much thought yet to be honest but being stakes placed and out of a family as good as this, she could be going to one of the top-end stallions.

“I don’t normally buy race mares like her to breed with, I normally buy mares in foal because it’s closer to a result but I just really liked the look of this mare, I liked the family, I liked her pedigree, she’s won over $400,000 and she’s already stakes placed and just really fitted the mould so I’m really happy to have her.

“She was at the top end of the budget, I thought she was a $250,000 mare and if someone had gone another bid to $280,000 I probably would have been out of play but I got the win so it’s great."

The second-top lot in the sale was the Newgate Farm-offered three-year-old colt North England (Farnan), who sold to Lofty Thoroughbreds for $200,000.

A further three lots realised six figures in the sale – the broodmares Absolute Flirt (Stratum), with an Anamoe (Street Boss) filly at foot, made $160,000 to Jorshan Investments, Sense Of Honour (Pride Of Dubai) in foal to Home Affairs (I Am Invincible) sold for $150,000 to Ivan Danzo and Reeh (Sebring), in foal to Switzerland (Snitzel) and with a Unite And Conquer (Hinchinbrook) filly at foot, realised $120,000 to Blue Oak Equine.

In total the sale grossed $4,783,100. Entries are now open for the March (Early) Sale, and will remain so until midnight on March 4. The sale will run from March 6-11. To enter click here.

McDonald looking forward to Autumn Glow task

Autumn Glow (Credit: Sportpix)

Champion jockey James McDonald is looking forward to getting back aboard Autumn Glow (The Autumn Sun) on Saturday when the four-year-old mare bids to make history in the Verry Elleegant Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at Randwick. The Chris Waller-trained daughter of The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice) has won her opening nine starts, and will emulate Black Caviar (Bel Esprit) if she can win her tenth this weekend. “You can’t do much better. She’s unbeaten, first and foremost, she’s winning by margins and beating the best in the country,’’ McDonald told Racing NSW. “I was blown away with the reception she got after the Apollo and I can only imagine that’s going to grow. If we can promote her properly there will be plenty of people there.” Winner of the Epsom Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) and Golden Eagle (1500m), Autumn Glow returned first-up in the Apollo Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) with a dominant 2.7 lengths success over stablemate Aeliana (Castelvecchio). “One thing about Glow is she hasn’t put a foot wrong, she loves her racing,’’ McDonald added. “I think [race caller] Darren Flindell sums it up well, she’s born a winner. Winners win, losers lose. She just wins. It doesn’t matter, wet or dry, 1100 metres or a mile, it doesn’t matter. It’s exciting for everyone involved. Her fans. Trainer Chris [Waller]. Chris Harwood who rides her every morning. Myself. Her strapper Tshepiso Moagi. I’ve probably left a few out.”

Surround tactics for Savvy Hallie fluid

Savvy Hallie (Credit: Sportpix)

Last-start Light Fingers Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) winner Savvy Hallie (Hellbent) is reportedly in good form ahead of her task in Saturday's Surround Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Randwick. The Brad Widdup-trained filly will take on Tempted (Street Boss) this weekend and, although usually a front runner, connections are not making a decision on what tactics to use just yet. "I'll leave it up to Nash [Rawiller, jockey]. You never know, someone might want to go a bit hard this time around," Widdup said. "We can only worry about ourselves, and we're very happy with her. She's had a trouble-free preparation, so fingers crossed she can keep going." Savvy Hallie has drawn barrier six in the field of eight and, with the Bureau of Meteorology predicting anywhere between 3 millimetres and 60 millimetres of rain in the lead-up, the filly's ability to handle most conditions could play into her favour. Widdup was at Crown Lodge during the period when Portillo (Red Ransom) (2009) and Parables (Lonhro) (2011) were successful in the Surround and feels Savvy Hallie has proven herself to be in a similar class. "Portillo was a good two-year-old and trained on, Parables came later. But I think Savvy Hallie is definitely in their mould," he said. "You never get too carried away with this sort of race, but it's great to have a really good chance. She hasn't gone backwards and you'd like to think she should be competitive."

Gollan filly bids for Slipper place

Queensland-based trainer Tony Gollan will send Pembrey (Prague) to Saturday's Sweet Embrace Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Randwick as the filly bids to throw her hat into the ring for next month's Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m). The daughter of Prague (Redoute’s Choice) was passed in when she didn’t make $20,000 as a yearling, but has landed a pair of Doomben trials and made an impressive winning debut over 1000 metres at Eagle Farm on February 14. “She’s nothing flash to look at, that’s why she didn’t make 20 grand, she’s not a big filly,’’ Gollan told Racing NSW. “She’s small to medium size but has a bit of length about her. She was quite backward when she came in as a yearling and she’s just progressed and progressed. She’s just a real racehorse, she’s a real two-year-old, she licks the bin out and just does what you want. She handles everything really well and goes about her business like a much older horse. That’s what the good two-year-olds do, they act more like three and four-year-olds.” Gollan has secured James McDonald to ride the filly, who was $2.40 with TAB on Wednesday. “She’ll definitely handle wet ground and 1200 metres shouldn’t be an issue at all. It’s whether she’s good enough now," Gollan said. “It’s great to have [James] on board, he’s a good bloke and a very good rider, but we’ll wait and see what she does now and whether she measures up to the Sydney standard. It’s a big jump from the horses she’s racing [at home] but she couldn’t have been any more impressive and she’s certainly trained on, there’s been no dramas with her over the last fortnight. She’s the real deal as far as a two-year-old goes.”

Planet Red to do battle with Observer again

The Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained Planet Red (Admire Mars) will take on old rival Observer (Ghaiyyath) for the fourth time in his career in Saturday's Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) at Flemington. The son of Admire Mars (Daiwa Major) leads the head-to-head two-one but the latest meeting between the pair saw Planet Red finish second behind the Godolphin horse in the Autumn Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) first-up on February 7. "He's a nice, uncomplicated gelding and he'll show up, but everything will have to go right for us to turn it around on Observer," Price said. "My opinion is no I can't [beat Observer] but that is not how we're training him. My opinion is Observer is the clear good horse, and we are there to do our best." Planet Red scored a debut win from Observer in a maiden at Pakenham last May, with Planet Red again ahead of Observer (third) when runner-up in the Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m). However, the gelding received two kilograms from Observer last-start whereas they will race off level weights this weekend. "I'm not sure how we beat Observer," Price said. "We rode our horse cold first-up and I thought it was a very good run, a long-sustained run. He's going well and hopefully he can take up a more forward position in the race. He's had a good prep for the race, he's sound, he's got good condition on him, and I've got enough horse to go to Sydney for something afterwards, but I haven't worked that out yet."

Blamey beginning for Onesmoothoperator

Last year's Moonee Valley Gold Cup (Gr 2, 2500m) winner Onesmoothoperator (Dialed In) will tackle a mile for the first time in his career when he lines up in the Blamey Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) at Flemington on Saturday. The eight-year-old gelding will be making his first start for Tim Fitzsimmons having stayed in Australia after his down-the-field effort in November's Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) for Brian Ellison. "It's going to be interesting," Fitzsimmons said. "The mile will probably be too short for him, but you never know. Hopefully there is a little bit of speed on, but it's a starting point for him. We'll see how he goes on Saturday. The owners would love to run him in the Australian Cup, but whether he is sharp enough, we'll have to wait and see. This weekend will give us a good guide as to where we go." The Australian Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) on March 28 could be used as a lead up to a potential start in the Sydney Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) at Randwick on April 11 in which Onesmoothoperator has 55 kilograms. "He's nominated for the Sydney Cup, but the problem would be the rain as he doesn't go a yard on a wet track," Fitzsimmons said. "I think last year was a Good 4, but it's often very wet, so the immediate aims will be the Blamey and the Australian Cup. He's an interesting horse but they've found the key to him, riding him cold and let him finish off. Talking to Brian [Ellison], they tried everything. Riding him closer just doesn't work, so one thing for sure is whatever race he's in, he's going to be ridden quietly to finish off."

World Pool Trophy second-up for Befuddle

Pakenham-based trainer John Sadler is hoping that Befuddle (Hanseatic) can get back into the winner's circle on Saturday when the filly tackles the HKJC World Pool Trophy (1100m) at Flemington. The daughter of Hanseatic (Street Boss) made her first appearance for 11 months when fourth in a Benchmark 66 (1000m) at Caulfield Heath on February 9, beaten just over two lengths. "For a horse that had been off the scene for a long time, she ran very well at Caulfield Heath," Sadler said. "She got very tired late, but they did run along, and she led them up and there were some quick horses in that race. We got her to the trial stage in the spring, but she just didn't come up, so I tipped her out. There were no lameness issues or anything like that, she just didn't look right. I'm happy with how she's going but I still think she might be one race away, however I'm expecting her to run really well."

Well-bred Fireball Miss scores at second attempt

Fireball Miss (Bivouac), a half-sister to Group 1 winner Femminile (Dundeel), scored at the second time of asking at Rosehill on Wednesday. Ridden by Zac Lloyd for Ciraon Maher in the $100,000 1500-metre maiden, the three-year-old daughter of Bivouac (Exceed And Excel) kept on gamely inside the closing stages to deny the persistent challenge of Almaaz (Zoustar) to record a 0.2 lengths victory. There was a further 1.8 lengths back to Indigo Star (Zoustar) in third as the winner improved upon her debut fifth placing in the Inglis Xtra Bonus Maiden Plate (1200m) at Warwick Farm on February 4. “She’s still learning and is very promising,” stable representative Johann Gerard-Dubord said. “She’s a well bred filly as a half-sister to the SA Derby winner last year, so it’s good to get the maiden win today and especially for such good prize-money. It’s great for Bennett Racing, they have been such good supporters of ours and they keep finding good horses and they will have a lot of fun with her.” Fireball Miss was a $140,000 Inglis Easter purchase from Vinery Stud for Bennett Racing and is the second foal and second winner out of the stakes-placed Pierro (Lonhro) mare Femme Fireball, herself a sister to Group 3 winner Rock. Femme Fireball was sold at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale last year for $900,000 to Boomer Bloodstock (FBAA) and Paul Willetts Bloodstock and is now with Three Bridges Thoroughbreds and produced a filly for them last spring by Anamoe (Street Boss).

Heys eyeing up Championship for Banjora

Warwick Farm-based trainer Bryce Heys is eyeing up a potential crack at the Provincial-Midway Championship Final (1400m) with Banjora (I Am Invincible) after the four-year-old gelding took his career unbeaten run to three at Rosehill on Wednesday. Ridden by Zac Lloyd, the son of I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) proved a length too strong for Beau Bandit (Brazen Beau) in a Benchmark 72 (1100m) contest, with a further 0.4 lengths back to Astronomix (Calxy) in third place. "He is more than brave," Heys said. "Two starts in a row I can't say he was looking pretty, and that I had any confidence we'd get the result, despite the horse's ability, but to overcome that twice in a row now, not many can do it." Banjora's next goal is likely to be the 1200-metre Provincial-Midway Championships qualifier at Gosford on March 14 with a view to getting into the final at Randwick in April. "I was going to go to the Gosford qualifier for the Provincial-Midway," Heys said. "The 1400 [metres] might be a query, but I thought against that class of horse, he might be alright. Hopefully he ends up in the Provincial-Midway Championship."

Highview Unreserved Deplenishing Sale catalogue online

Wrote (Credit: Highview)

The catalogue for Highview’s Unreserved Deplenishing Sale, set to take place on March 15, is now available to view online. Consisting of 43 lots, New Zealand Bloodstock (NZB) will conduct the auction on-farm which will offer yearlings, two-year-olds, unraced stock, broodmares, and mares with a foal at foot. Set to take the reins from his father Brent’s establishment, Kurtis Gillovic is looking forward to the afternoon at their Hamilton-based farm. “This is a genuine sale, numbers have accumulated quite quickly over the last couple of years, and we are just tidying up the operation to make it a little more boutique," he said. “Nothing is going to change here in the future, it’s business as usual. There are 17 yearlings by commercial sires, colts and fillies, some nice trade horses. There’s money to be made. We’ve got eight mares with foals at foot and all broodmares in foal will be tested a week out from selling to confirm the pregnancy. With something for everyone, the interest in the sale so far has been fantastic so we are hoping for a good result, and that these horses will find some nice homes.” View the full catalogue here. Printed catalogues will be available at Highview on sale day. Selling will be conducted from 1pm on March 15 at Highview, 1544 Kakaramea Road, Hamilton, with gates open at 10am. While online bidding is unavailable, all prospective buyers are welcome to attend. Alternatively NZB and Bloodstock Agents Federation New Zealand (BAFNZ) agents will be able to inspect and bid on your behalf should you be unable to attend.

Noble set to take two more shots at Group 1 glory

Having claimed a first Group 1 victory for Cambridge Stud owners Sir Brendan and Lady Jo Lindsay with Jaarffi (Iffraaj) at Ellerslie last Saturday, Lance Noble is hoping to add to that tally back at headquarters on Champions Day. Noble is looking forward to the Group 1 debut of talented two-year-old Liguria (Snitzel) in the Sistema Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m). The daughter of Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) and the Noble-trained Matamata Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) winner Vernazza (More Than Ready), displayed her share of family talent when winning the Colin Jillings 2YO Classic (Gr 3, 1200m) at Ellerslie on January 31. That confirmed a tilt at the Matamata Breeders’ Stakes, but a heavy track denied Liguria the chance to emulate her dam in the biggest race on Noble’s former home track. “I was looking forward to heading back down to Matamata with what I considered a strong prospect for another Breeders’ Stakes, but it wasn’t to be,” Noble said. “The track was already heavy when we decided to leave her in, but later in the morning as we were heading out the gate, I got word that the track had a further downgrade. I said to myself ‘this is crazy’, so I rang the stewards and pulled her out. It was the right decision, she went to the trials at Avondale last week and won really well. She’s all set, so here’s hoping for another big day.”

Glance impresses on debut

Stephen Marsh unveiled a smart debut winner when Glance (Savabeel) came from last in the hands of George Rooke to land the Pearl Series 3YO fillies (1400m) at Pukekohe on Wednesday. Sporting the colours of breeder Christopher Grace, the well-related daughter of Savabeel (Zabeel) chased down stablemate and warm favourite Mazino (Hello Youmzain) by 0.2 lengths with Virgo Viva (Ribchester) a further 1.3 lengths back in third. “She's exciting,” Marsh said. “It’s great to have our first horse in these colours, with Mr and Mrs Grace. They've put a few people into the horse as well, which is great. I just said to George, ‘I don't mind if she gets back, just relax and ride her with a hell of a lot of confidence, and she'll get to the line for us.’ I'm just pleased that we've been allowed to be very patient with her. We've been in and out of the stables a fair bit, but she's a very exciting, and I think she's got a very bright future, and better so when she turns four.” Marsh said Mazino had probably given the race away when drifting out to the middle of the track late in the piece but praised the ability of Glance. “You could just see Glance plotting the path, I thought if she runs into second, I'd be very happy,” the trainer said. “The way she really put her head down and hit the line was superb. They don't often do that first up in a maiden and there’s a lot of winners in that race, so she’s got a big future.” By Savabeel out of the winning Rip Van Winkle (Galileo) mare Glimpse, herself a half-sister to Wellington Cup (Gr 3, 2400m) winner Graphic (Volksraad), Glance is from the same family as Group 2 scorer Hinekaha (Savabeel).

HK: Little Paradise aims to continue run in Hong Kong Classic Cup

Little Paradise (Credit: HKJC)

Vincent Ho worked Little Paradise (Toronado) under the cover of darkness on Tuesday morning at Sha Tin and the leg-stretch was much to the local ace’s delight in preparation for Sunday’s Hong Kong Classic Cup (Listed, 1800m). Forming part of a big-race double-header at Sha Tin alongside the Hong Kong Gold Cup (Gr 1, 2000m), the Hong Kong Classic Cup is the middle leg of the three-race Four-Year-Old Classic Series, which culminates with the Hong Kong Derby (Listed, 2000m) on March 22. Ho, who has won the Hong Kong Classic Cup twice with Golden Sixty (Medaglia D’Oro) and Super Sunny Sing (Nicconi), said: “I’m happy with him [Little Paradise] – he felt good. He’s ready and I am ready – we’re looking forward to it.” Little Paradise blitzed the Hong Kong Classic Mile (Listed, 1600m) – the first leg of the Four-Year-Old Classic Series – on February 1 by two lengths after overcoming trouble in the home straight to secure Jimmy Ting’s biggest win as a trainer. Discussing the continued rises in distance across the remaining legs, Ho said: “Even 2000 metres is no problem. He’s so gentle in the mornings – he’s not a problem at all.” Little Paradise has won six times from nine outings, and clocked 52.7s (28.3, 24.4) alongside stablemate Perfecto Moments (Sweynesse) at Sha Tin on Tuesday morning.

HK: Fownes delighted by Moreira’s return

Caspar Fownes was beaming at Sha Tin on Tuesday morning following the announcement that Joao Moreira will return to Hong Kong as his stable rider. Moreira, a four-time Hong Kong Champion Jockey (2014/15, 2015/16, 2016/17 & 2020/21) with 1,235 winners in Hong Kong, linked with Fownes to scoop the 2021 Hong Kong Derby aboard Sky Darci (Darci Brahma). “It’s [Moreira’s return] something I’m very happy that’s going to happen. He starts up in the first week of April, and it’s going to be great for Hong Kong racing to have him back in action here. I’m very happy that I’ve got him as my stable jockey,” Fownes said. “Hopefully, we can have some fun together – that’s most important – and win lots of races. I’m sure the fans will be happy to have him back here.”

UAE: Sing Dragon gears up for Meydan's Mahab Al Shimaal

Chris So is leaving no stone unturned as Sing Dragon (Written Tycoon) prepares for Saturday night’s Mahab Al Shimaal (Gr 3, 1200m) in Dubai. So, the trainer of more than 400 winners in Hong Kong, is tinkering with gear changes, anticlockwise trackwork and gate schooling as he aims to give five-time winner Sing Dragon the best possible chance of claiming overseas success at Meydan. “He’s training well. He will have a jump-out from the gates and then run for around 400 metres on Thursday morning ahead of Super Saturday,” So said. “This way he gets a feel for them [starting stalls] – his gate speed is important. Sometimes, if a horse jumps slowly, they face kickback and then stop. He’ll wear pacifiers, too, this weekend. He’s never raced with them, but he trialled well wearing them.”

US: Stakes winner Neom Beach tops Fasig-Tipton February Digital Sale

Neom Beach

Neom Beach (Omaha Beach), a multiple stakes winning daughter of Omaha Beach (War Front), was the headline act of the Fasig-Tipton February Digital Sale when she sold to Amy Moore for a sale-topping US$300,000 (approx. AU$423,120). The five-year-old mare was consigned as a racing/broodmare prospect by Jeffrey Bloom, agent. A winner at two, three, and four, Neom Beach won last year’s Ouija Board Distaff (Listed, 8f) on dirt and the Wasted Tears (Listed, 9f) on turf and she came under the hammer off the back of a three-length win in allowance company on her last start. “Fasig-Tipton has mastered the art of blending their legacy bloodstock sales expertise with their proven innovative digital platform,” said Jeffrey Bloom, who consigned the mare. "Bringing buyers and sellers across the world together with such amazing efficiency opens up endless opportunities. I am a huge fan.” Other good results included Miss Tapirado, a winning daughter of Tapit (Pulpit) and Grade 2 winner and multiple Grade 1-placed My Conquestadory (Artie Schiller), who sold to Four Quarters Corp for US$260,000 (approx. AU$366,700), while Gun Party (Curlin) was picked up by KDE Equine for US$200,000 (approx. AU$282,080). The February sale closed with gross sales of US$5,881,500 (approx. AU$8.29 million) for 189 horses sold.

Ellis Wong graduates as Hong Kong’s homegrown talent shines

Apprentice Ellis Wong graduated into Hong Kong’s senior jockey ranks at Happy Valley on Wednesday night as fellow homegrown riders Angus Chung and Jerry Chau showcased their talent at the city circuit.

Caspar Fownes predicted a bright future for 25-year-old Wong after Lucky Generations (Russian Revolution) claimed a short-head victory over Oriental Surprise (Mikki Isle) in the Class 5 Bowen Handicap (1200m) to hand the apprentice his 70th Hong Kong victory – a milestone which triggered his graduation.

“He’s [Wong] so deserving of that and I’m very proud of him,” Fownes said. “He’s come a long way and worked very hard. I’ve always believed in him, and we’ve always given him opportunities.

“I honestly think that he’s going to make it in the jockey ranks in the years going forward. He can only improve and it’s also great that we’re going to have Joao (Moreira) in our stable in the last three months [of the season] to help him and teach him a few things. He’s a great kid.”

Trained by Fownes, Lucky Generations maintained a solid sprint under Wong to deny eight-champion jockey Zac Purton on Oriental Surprise, formally sealing Wong’s promotion to senior ranks with his allowance to drop from five pounds to three this Sunday.

Wong rode 88 winners in South Australia before returning to Hong Kong during the 2022/23 season, opening his Hong Kong account aboard Fownes-trained Storm Legend (Night Of Thunder) in May, 2023 and has since made solid headway, predominantly with Fownes’ backing.

Supported by his family at Happy Valley tonight, Wong thanked Fownes and Amy Chan, the headmistress of The Hong Kong Jockey Club’s Apprentice Jockeys’ School where Wong first learned the ropes.

“I’m so happy I can ride this winner for my boss,” Wong said. “This is a special feeling, and he [Fownes] is a very good teacher, and I want to thank Amy and the Apprentice Jockeys’ School and, of course, my family for all their support.”

Chung, 29, scored a double as the winner of the 2023/24 Tony Cruz Award for the leading homegrown rider prevailed on Danny Shum’s Legend Star (Deep Field), who recorded his second course and distance victory of the season with a powerful finishing surge to claim the second section of the Class 4 Kennedy Handicap (1200m).

Chung then teamed with Cruz’s Outgate (Outstrip) to take the second section of the Class 3 Wan Chai Gap Handicap (1200m).

Preparing to saddle Romantic Warrior (Acclamation) in the Citi Hong Kong Gold Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) at Sha Tin on Sunday, Shum also fired in a double when My Day My Way (Overshare) won the first section of the Class 3 Wan Chai Gap Handicap (1200m) for Lyle Hewitson.

In the midst of a strong season, Chau edged closer to breaking into the top three in the Hong Kong jockeys’ championship when Cody Mo’s Stormi (Cappella Sansevero) completed a hat-trick of victories with success in the Class 4 Robinson Handicap (1650m).

Chau, 25, has already eclipsed last season’s haul of 23 wins and Stormi’s defiant all-the-way triumph gave Chau his 25th spoil of the campaign to leave him trailing only Zac Purton (79), Hugh Bowman (35) and Andrea Atzeni (29) after 49 of 88 meetings.

“It was a tough effort [from Stormi], we got a smooth lead and now that he’s getting more mature and settling down during the race, when he was challenged, he fought back really well,” Chau said. “He’s improved with every race and he gets himself into a good rhythm.”

David Hayes moved into second place in the trainers’ championship behind Fownes (37 wins) with 36 victories when Soleil Fighter (Sea The Moon) led all the way to snare the Class 2 Magazine Gap Handicap (1800m) under Hugh Bowman.

“He’s such a good Happy Valley horse. I just thought he pulled a bit at Sha Tin the other day. In England, he did win over 1800 metres, so I thought with the small field, if he got an easy run, he would be hard to catch,” Hayes said.

Dennis Yip and Derek Leung combined with Northern Fire Ball (Sooboog) to land the first section of the Class 4 Kennedy Handicap (1200m), before Rainbow Seven (Per Incanto) rebounded from a recent bout of poor luck to effortlessly land the Class 4 The Volunteers’ Challenge Cup Handicap (1200m) for Francis Lui and Maxime Guyon.

Hong Kong racing continues at Sha Tin on Sunday with the running of the Citi Hong Kong Gold Cup and the Hong Kong Classic Cup (Listed, 1800m).

Surging Kia Ora Stud has its latest stallion-in-waiting after four-year-old Tropicus (Too Darn Hot) resumed with an affirming elite-level victory in Saturday’s Oakleigh Plate (Gr 1, 1100m) - and he has the farm’s fingerprints all over him.

The Hunter Valley stud, flying high with their young stallion Farnan (Not A Single Doubt) currently topping Australia’s second season sires’ table, not only bred Tropicus - in tandem with long-term Queensland-based associates Don and Judy Kelly - but his dam Extensible (Exceed And Excel) as well.

And thanks in part to Tropicus, amongst Too Darn Hot’s (Dubawi) dizzying successes, Extensible’s retired sire Exceed And Excel (Danehill) is the number one nick for his fellow Darley stallion.

Too Darn Hot over Exceed And Excel has had 11 winners from 15 starters, including three at black type level, for a 20 per cent stakes winners to runners ratio, the best of any cross for Too Darn Hot with more than seven runners.

Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott’s Gimcrack Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m) winner Shiki is the other Australian black type winner from the cross, while the third comes in Britain thanks to Exceed And Excel’s shuttle years in Fitzella, winner of the Princess Margaret Stakes (Gr 3, 6f) at Ascot last July.

Extensible made the top 17 at the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale in 2013 when she sold for $220,000, with the Kellys later taking up the majority shareholding and Kia Ora keeping a slice.

She became a more than handy racehorse for Peter and Paul Snowden, not missing a place in her first nine runs, with her four wins including three Sydney city victories.

The chestnut graduated to black type for start number ten in the spring of 2016, and after a fourth in Randwick’s Angst Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) she went to Melbourne for the first time and earned a pedigree upgrade with a third in Sandown’s Summoned Stakes (Gr 3, 1500m).

Extensible was, however, possibly a length short of the top echelon, never winning again after those first nine starts and not adding to her one black type placing.

But she’s now earned breeding star status with her Group 1-winning son - which is only fitting for a mare from an esteemed Aga Khan-bred line.

Kia Ora’s bloodstock and breeding manager Shane Wright says the Anthony and Sam Freedman-trained Tropicus will continue to the William Reid Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Caulfield on March 21, with a decision to be made later as to whether he goes to stud this spring or continues racing.

“He’s still got a racing program ahead of him and there’ll be lots of chats to be had, but we see him as a stallion in the future,” he says.

“We’ll be talking to the Freedman camp. He looks likely to go to the William Reid next, and a decision will be made after then what we do.

“But whenever it happens, we’re very proud to have a stallion bred on the farm, out of a Kia Ora-bred mare, going to our stud in the future.”

Tropicus’s pedigree has a heavy foreign flavour, with Extensible and Exceed And Excel its only members with the AUS suffix.

Extensible - who has a Justify (Scat Daddy) filly going to Inglis Easter in Tyreel Stud’s draft - hails from a deep European female line, with her first six dams bred by the Aga Khan, back to 1947 drop But Beautiful (Tehran), a three-time stakes winner.

Tropicus’s sixth and fifth dams But Lovely (Sayajirao) and Embellie (Venture) were stakes winners in France. Third dam Kerita (Formidable) won a Group 3 and a Listed in England and threw the Group 3 winner Keraka (Storm Bird), who in turn left an Irish Listed winner.

Second dam Kerimba (Sinndar) is the taproot of the family, an unraced Irish-bred who also threw Extensible’s sister Cathay Lady, who won Gosford’s Belle of the Turf Stakes (1600m) in 2013 for John Sargent.

We’re very proud to have a stallion bred on the farm, out of a Kia Ora-bred mare, going to our stud in the future

Shane Wright

“Extensible is from a very good European family, but she was also your typical Exceed And Excel - a normal sized, strong and forward sort of mare,” Wright says.

“We thought Too Darn Hot would be a good mating for her. He hadn’t had any runners yet, but we thought he was a good bet. Dubawi blood has been proven over the years, and we thought he was definitely worth sending a nice mare to, which we’ve done just about every year since.

“When you bring those international stallions here, you’ve got to give them the best of the Australian mares to make them suit the Australian way.

“You’re trying to race in Australia, so you want to produce an Australian product with the best influences from Europe or America as you can I suppose.”

Kia Ora have been rewarded for that ‘bet’ in spades, like so many who patronised Too Darn Hot early in his shuttle career. The winner of three European Group 1s from 1400 metres to 1600 metres, Too Darn Hot was Australia’s champion first and second season sire, and he’s now tracking at a 9.9 per cent stakes winners to runners ratio in Australia, with 14 from 141.

Blending his mostly European pedigree with Extensible’s, which is slightly more American than European, brought a couple of tasty repetitions.

Irish-bred stallion Top Ville (High Top) is present at 4f x 6f, with two daughters being a handy way to go since he’s renowned as a broodmare sire. He’s the sire of one of the very best of those in Darara, who’s Too Darn Hot’s second dam.

Also bred by the Aga Khan, she left no fewer than four Group 1 winners on the flat, and another one over the jumps.

One of her flat brigade was Darazari (Sadler’s Wells), who was a relatively early import from France to Australia, and won Rosehill’s Ranvet Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) in 1999 for Bruce Wallace and Glen Boss, beating Tie The Knot (Nassipour).

Too Darn Hot (Credit: Darley)

Another was Dar Re Mi (Singspiel), winner of a Group 1 in each of Ireland, England and Dubai, and who became the dam of Too Darn Hot.

And so Top Ville is Too Darn Hot’s second damsire, while he appears in Tropicus’s bottom half as the second damsire of Sinndar, Tropicus’s second damsire.

Another interesting one, still with Aga Khan stock, is Venture (Relic), a 1957 drop. The winner of four modern day Group 1s, and a sire in France in the 1960s and Japan in the 1970s, Venture kicks off both female lines of Tropicus’s pedigree, at 6f x 6f.

The great Mill Reef (Never Bend) comes in at 6m x 6m, although a bit buried, as the third sire of Dubawi’s dam, and the second sire of Sinndar’s.

Tropicus would also appear to benefit from repetitions of key mares deep in his pedigree.

Natalma (Native Dancer) appears seven times from generations six through eight - three in the top half and four in the bottom. Selene (Chaucer) comes in nine times back in columns eight and nine, six on the dam’s side. American super mare Lalun (Djeddah) is three times in Too Darn Hot and once in Extensible, and French great La Troienne (Teddy) appears three times in the ninth remove, twice in the top half.

Nearco (Pharos) is the dominant stallion, with 15 mentions, ahead of the 13 for Hyperion (Gainsborough).

Kia Ora sold Extensible’s first throw, a colt by Written Tycoon (Iglesia) who raced as Penciled and didn’t get to the pointy end, winning a Donald maiden in 16 starts.

They were set to sell third foal Tropicus as well but fate intervened - just as well for Kia Ora, since he’s turned out to be the standout of the brood so far.

“He was a beautiful yearling,” Wright says. “He was destined to go to Easter but he had a setback before the sale, so Kia Ora was happy to retain and race him.”

When you bring those international stallions here, you’ve got to give them the best of the Australian mares to make them suit the Australian way

Shane Wright

Tropicus only debuted in May of his two-year-old season, with a half-length victory over 1100 metres at Caulfield, before being immediately spelled.

A push out to longer trips that spring resulted in a seventh in the Golden Rose (Gr 1, 1400m) and an eighth in the Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m). Being returned to shorter trips led to two more Caulfield victories last year - in the Zeditave Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) and The Heath (Gr 3, 1100m) - before the crowning jewel in his rich affinity with the track last Saturday.

“He was good from the moment he left the farm,” Wright says of Tropicus, Too Darn Hot’s second Australia elite-level winner after current Darley sire Broadsiding, amid five worldwide.

“Brett Cavanough did a very good job of breaking him in, and told us he had ability.

“He had one run as a two-year-old and showed he had good speed. Given his pedigree and the Too Darn Hot influence, we thought he’d get up over a trip, at 1400 or 1600 metres.

“He ran to his merit in every race, but a decision was made to bring him back to sprint trips and that’s when he showed what he really had.

“He’s shown all along that he had the potential, especially when we got him back over the sprint trips. He had form around the very best of them.

“Getting that Group 1 has just highlighted his ability. He is up there with the very best of them, and he deserved his Group 1. It’ll be great to have him stand at the farm.”
