While Newgate Farm super sire Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt) dominated the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale earlier this week, Newgate owner Henry Field was building new relationships with breeders like WA-based Yarradale Stud.

Yarradale owner Lyn Sayers joined Field on the Newgate table at Riverside Stables alongside stud manager Davy Hanratty and his wife Susan, and their $2 million spend included Newgate fillies by I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) and Capitalist (Written Tycoon).

What's On

“We bought yearlings here for the first time twelve months ago and went home with five fillies,” Hanratty recalled to ANZ News.

“We couldn’t be happier with how that’s working out and it’s gone to another level this week with Henry. Newgate is an exceptional stud. Lyn and I only heard good things about how well it’s run and how they keep clients well-informed. That’s down to Henry.

“We’ve developed a positive working relationship and spent some time in the Hunter Valley in December getting a feel for the venture. Being involved in the Newgate colts syndicate is exciting and it’s a no-brainer ensuring Yarradale remains a force in the industry.”

Yarradale weighed in with $800,000 for Newgate’s I Am Invincible filly from Peace Time (War Front) (Lot 14) on Sunday morning. The dam’s four foals to race are all black-type sprinters with Xtremetime (Extreme Choice) heading the quartet having landed the Woodlands Stakes (Listed, 1100m) at Rosehill.

“The Vinnie filly is a supermodel,” Hanratty declared. “She’s big, strong and beautiful with a pedigree to match. Chris Waller was the underbidder and he came over and offered his congratulations. Knowing Chris was keen on her vindicated our decision and that was good enough for us to send the filly to him.”

Yarradale also paid $350,000 for the Capitalist filly out of Zoustar (Northern Meteor) mare Menagerie (Lot 425) on Monday. She was the final filly from the Newgate consignment and is a full-sister to Black Opal Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) winner Holmes A Court.

“Peter Snowden was the underbidder so that was a good sign, too,” Hanratty said. “The dam is a half-sister to the Champion NZ 2YO Il Quello Veloce and there’s residual value with Australian Group 1 winners right down the page.”

The Newgate – WA connection goes back to 2013 when Field sold Emirates Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) winner Awesome Rock (Fastnet Rock) for $575,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Gold Front Thoroughbreds owners Alan and Sue Olive kept a share and he’s currently top five on the WA Sires’ premiership with chief-earner Watch Me Rock nailing the Railway Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) during the Ascot summer carnival.

Field also has fond memories of Lyn’s husband Ron Sayers, who died in 2022. A legendary figure in the mining industry, Ron founded Ausdrill and bought Yarradale in 1997. The stud has had top-class stallions such as Breeders’ Cup Mile (Gr 1, 8f) winner War Chant (Danzig) – who died in 2024 at the age of 27.

He also owned a share in Northerly (Serheed) who remains the greatest galloper to ever emerge from the west.

“I had the greatest respect for Ron,” Field said. “He was an extraordinary man and it’s an honour to continue that relationship with Lyn and the Yarradale team.

“They bought two very well-bred fillies from us. I rate the I Am Invincible filly very highly. She’s a phenomenal physical. And the Capitalist was well bought at the price.”

Yarradale also purchased a Justify (Scat Daddy) filly (Lot 8) out of the Group 3-placed mare Pantonario (Not A Single Doubt) from Silverdale Farm for $600,000, and a Maurice (Screen Hero) filly (Lot 108) out of the stakes-placed mare Smirnova (Snitzel) from Arrowfield Stud for $300,000. The former will be trained by Luke Fernie, while the Maurice filly will be prepared by Trevor Andrews.

They will follow Yarradale’s 2025 Inglis Easter Yearlings who are already making an impact in Perth. Leading the way is unbeaten Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) filly Aurum Belle, who was a $725,000 buy last year in partnership with Ridgeport Farm owner Santo Guagliardo.

She’s the second foal out of Dame Giselle (I Am Invincible) who was a multiple Group 2 winner in Sydney, while second dam Ballet Society (Stravinsky) was a multiple Group 2 winner in Melbourne.

Aurum Belle won the Supremacy Stakes (Listed, 1000m) at Ascot last month and will be gunning for more black type in the Gimcrack Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) this weekend. Her Easter Saturday showdown with Magic Millions WA 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) winner Maria Lucia (Rommel) will determine final favouritism for the Karrakatta Plate (Gr 2, 1200m) on April 18.

Bookmakers have installed Aurum Belle as the ruling $3.20 favourite for Perth’s premier juvenile event at the $5 million The Quokka (1200m) meeting and trainer Neville Parnham is confident there will be more improvement to come out of this weekend’s Gimcrack Stakes.

“She was pretty raw on debut and obviously took benefit from that outing into the Supremacy,” Parnham explained. “We’ve planned to just keep her ticking along and she will front up in the Gimcrack before going on to the Karrakatta.

“We paid plenty of money for her and that won’t be her last black-type win. She looks pretty exciting and I think we will probably be looking at better races for her at the end of the year.”

In-form jockey Brad Parnham reported Aurum Belle could have increased the two-length margin when breaking 58 seconds for 1000 metres in the Supremacy.

“She took the next step from the first-up win when she was a bit full of herself,” he said. “She sprung the gates and was comfortable in the lead today.

“She relaxed and cruised in front and then kicked off the corner. I had them covered and we kept something in reserve.”

Another Yarradale 2025 Inglis Easter Sale graduate ready to debut is the I Am Invincible filly Cos I Am. She is owned in partnership with trainers Dan and Ben Pearce and is coming off two barrier trial wins at Lark Hill.

Cos I Am was a $500,000 buy last year and has been entered for Race 1 at Belmont on Thursday, the Quayclean Maiden (1000m).

“She was a stunning filly parading at Riverside,” Hanratty said. “She looked a very sharp type and we were prepared to go higher.”

I Am Invincible sired her from Randwick winner L’Cosmo (Lonhro) and second-dam Cosmic Endeavour (Northern Meteor) was a Group 1 winner of the Canterbury Stakes (1300m) and Queensland’s Tatt’s Tiara (1400m). Further down the page there’s more Group 1 success through blue-hen Twiglet (Twig Moss) and her iconic Hong Kong hero Fairy King Prawn (Danehill) and Group 1 racehorse and sire Easy Rocking (Barathea).

If nothing else, Cos I Am will be the best-bred youngster going around at Belmont today.

Amnesty for ineligible foals

Thoroughbred Breeders’ Australia (TBA) has welcomed a Racing Australia amnesty for ineligible foals born in 2024 and 2025.

The directive comes after long-term lobbying across several industry organisations to have those foals reinstated.

“It’s a sensible decision and a positive step from Racing Australia to resolve these issues,” TBA CEO Andrew Hore-Lacy said.

“The vast majority of cases were not deliberate breaches but administrative errors or miscommunications about who would lodge the Foal Ownership Declaration. These horses represent years of planning, investment and care for breeders.

“It’s reassuring to know those impacted horses can now move forward and have a future on the track. The amnesty removes uncertainty and allows these horses to progress as intended.”

All horses born in 2024 or 2025 who have yet to do a mare return or Foal Ownership Declaration (FOD) will also be eligible to race, provided the paperwork and associated fees are completed by 14 April, 2026.

“The lodgement of the Foal Ownership Declaration is an important part of our overall horse traceability and it is important that Owners and Breeders adhere to the specific Australian Rules of Racing that cover those responsibilities,” Racing Australia chair Rob Rorrison said.

“Our message has been very clear as to how serious an issue this is for the industry and I am pleased to say that the behavioural changes we are now seeing have resulted in a reduction in the Late Foal Ownership Declarations of 90 per cent.

“We thank the participants for working with us to achieve this much improved result as we move toward 100 per cent compliance.”

TBWA President Troy van Heemst with Basil and Diane Nolan at the Inglis Easter Sale (Credit: Inglis)

TBA president Basil Nolan declared the amnesty is a good example of the industry working the way it should.

“There has been strong engagement between breeders and the principal racing authorities, and a genuine willingness to listen to how these settings are playing out in practice,” Nolan said.

“Compliance has improved significantly, which is a positive outcome. But what has become clear is that for a small number of cases, the consequences have been out of proportion to what are, in many instances, administrative errors or misunderstandings.

“The important point is the collaborative approach. We won’t always agree on every issue, but when there is open dialogue and a shared focus on practical outcomes, the industry is in a much better position.

“The new team at TBA and Aushorse, led by Andrew Hore-Lacy, were brought in with a clear focus on strengthening collaboration across the industry, building constructive relationships and ensuring breeders have a credible voice in these discussions.

“As part of that, the team made a point of sitting down in person with the key decision makers at Racing NSW and Racing Victoria on a number of occasions to talk through how these settings were actually playing out and to work through the issues.

“The external environment is only getting more challenging, so it is in everyone’s interests that we are working together where we can and finding practical solutions to issues as they arise.”

The amnesty gives breeders some breathing space and TBA will be continuing the lobby for a resolution for foals born before 2024 and a sustainable long term solution.

Two yearlings affected by the previous rule were the Spirit Of Boom (Sequalo) and Savabeel (Zabeel) fillies that changed hands at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale in January.

The Spirit Of Boom graduate (Lot 25) from Telemon Stud was purchased by John Foote Bloodstock for $150,000 for trainer Tony Gollan and Strong Bloodstock, while the Savabeel filly (Lot 357) was sold by Vinery Stud to PR Thoroughbreds for $190,000.

Both were going through the appeal process during the sale, and Lot 25 was later cleared to race through the appeal. However, Lot 357 was rejected under appeal and labelled ineligible to race. This week’s amnesty now clears the Savabeel filly to be eligible to race, and the Stud Book website showing the ineligibility will be removed before the amnesty deadline.

Four for Brutal

Newgate Farm’s Brutal (O’Reilly) registered his fourth individual stakes winner when promising three-year-old Sentimental Legend (3 g ex Sentimental Star by More Than Ready) landed Wednesday’s Melvista Stakes (Listed, 2200m) at Ascot. Trained and bred by Grant and Alana Williams, the gelding is a half-brother to stakes winner Sentimental Hero (Al Maher) – who completed last year’s Goldfields double in the Boulder (Listed, 2100m) and Kalgoorlie Cups (Listed, 2300m) – and to the stakes-placed pair Sentimental Friend (Al Maher) and Sentimental Flame (Kermadec). He is the final of seven winners from eight to race out of the late Peters Investments-bred mare Sentimental Star (More Than Ready), who died in 2023. The dam is herself a half-sister to the Group 1-placed stakes winner Star Encounter (Jeune) and from the family of Group 1 winner Galaxy Star (Redoute’s Choice). Sentimental Legend is from the second crop of Newgate Farm’s Doncaster Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Brutal, who covered 126 mares last spring at an unchanged fee of $16,500 (inc GST).

Legend lands Melvista Stakes

Sentimental Legend stepped up his Classic campaign for the WA Derby (Gr 2, 2400m) with a determined victory in the Melvista Stakes at Ascot on Wednesday. The Grant and Alana Williams-prepared gelding had won a Bunbury maiden at the first time of asking in November over 1400 metres and added a Belmont Class 1 (1650m) last month before a half-length second to Aberdeen Flyer (Astern) in the J C Roberts Stakes (LR, 1800m) last time out. He turned the tables in Wednesday's final dress-rehearsal for the WA Derby, beating the Astern (Medaglia D'Oro) gelding by 1.3 lengths over the extended trip, while stablemate Wynn Las Vegas (Yes Yes Yes) was the same margin further adrift in third. It will be a ten-day turnaround to the Classic after Saturday’s Ascot meeting was washed out due the after-effects of Cyclone Narelle. “We’re not kidding when we say Alana can breed a goodie and patience has proven the key for Sentimental Legend,” Williams Racing posted on Facebook following the win. “We’ve always had high hopes for the 3YO and our expectations are being matched.”

Wonderfully Made lands WA Oaks

Playing God (Blackfriars) filly Wonderfully Made is on track to emulate Machine Gun Gracie (Maschino) after winning the WA Oaks (Gr 3, 2400m) in a cakewalk at Ascot on Wednesday. Sporting the China Horse Club colours, she cruised home with 4.2 lengths to spare from runner-up Poppy's Roses (Maschino) with a further 0.4 lengths back to Admire Astra (Admire Mars) in third. Machine Gun Gracie completed the WA Oaks – WA Derby last year and trainer Dan Morton believes his filly can also test the colts on Saturday week. Wonderfully Made won the Ascot 1,000 Guineas (Listed, 1800m) in February before an unlucky third in the Natasha Stakes (Listed, 2200m) last time out. “That was a gun ride by Lucy [Fiore] and we were confident she would get it right today while respecting the opposition,” Morton said. “I also have to thank China Horse Club manager Michael Smith for sending such a quality filly to our yard.” Waroona-based J Farms owner Janey Napoli sold Wonderfully Made for $250,000 at the 2024 Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale (as agent) for Playing God’s owner-breeder Colin Loxton. Her dam Precious Cargo (Trade Fair) is a full-sister to Scenic Blast Stakes (Listed, 1000m) winner Cool Trade.

Group 1 placegetter Tutta La Vita to be offered via Inglis Digital

Tutta La Vita (Credit: Inglis)

Group 1-placed mare Tutta La Vita (The Autumn Sun) will be a headline act when she is offered at the upcoming Inglis Digital April (Early) Online Sale. The five-year-old daughter of The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice) is currently based in Kentucky and will be offered as a key breeding prospect having already established herself among the leading fillies of her generation in Australia during the 2023-24 season.

A three-time placegetter at the highest level, Tutta La Vita was runner up in the Vinery Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) to Orchestral (Savabeel) and finished third in both the Flight Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) and Surround Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) behind fellow elite mares Tropical Squall (Prized Icon), Kimochi (Brave Smash) and Stefi Magnetica (All Too Hard).

Initially purchased by Kevin Kelly for $300,000 at the 2022 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, Tutta La Vita made $3.2 million when hammered down to John Stewart’s Resolute Racing at the 2024 Inglis Chairman’s Sale.

The mare hails from a deep and active family, with close relations producing Group winners Hidden Motive (Capitalist), Enthaar (Written Tycoon) and Jasmin Rouge (Dundeel). Her siblings were covered by the likes of Zoustar (Northern Meteor) and Home Affairs (I Am Invincible) in 2025, while she also has an unraced two-year-old half-brother by Too Darn Hot (Dubawi) in training with Annabel and Rob Archibald, which realised $480,000 at the 2025 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale.

Inglis managing director Mark Webster was thrilled with Tutta La Vita’s addition to the sale.

“There’s no doubt Tutta La Vita is one of the highest profile and most gorgeous looking mares to ever be offered on the Inglis Digital platform and she will no doubt garner attention from breeders all around the world,’’ Webster said.

“There will be few better credentialed mares offered anywhere in the world in 2026 and the timing of this sale is perfect should a southern hemisphere breeder acquire her, there’s still five or six months to get her back to Australia, give her time to reacclimatise and be ready for her maiden cover come spring.’’

Entries for the Inglis Digital April (Early) Online Sale will remain open until Wednesday, April 8. The sale will run from April 10-15. To enter, click here.

Sassy Boom's dam tops Magic Millions Digital Sale

Sassy Boom (Credit: Magic Millions)

Harbour Fun (Harbour Watch), the dam of Group 2 winner Sassy Boom (Spirit Of Boom), topped the latest Magic Millions Digital Sale which concluded on Wednesday. Offered by Eureka Stud, she was secured by Hong Kong based buyer Shì shì lái ma for $95,000, the proven producer looking well bought given her 100 per cent record from three runners to date and the fact she is carrying a full-sibling to 2024 Angus Armanasco Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) winner Sassy Boom.

Alongside that success, the Danny O’Brien-trained Sassy Boom also landed the Magic Millions Tasmanian 2YO Classic (1200m) and was stakes-placed in the Adelaide Guineas (Listed, 1600m). Sassy Boom will go under the hammer at May’s Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale on the Gold Coast.

“We’re delighted to have sold Harbour Fun on the Magic Millions April Digital Sale,” vendor David Johnson said.

“The team at Magics were very helpful in assisting us with the listing and keeping us up to date with any phone calls they received regarding the mare. We felt the mare would stand out on the platform and she sold accordingly.”

Among other highlights, Group-placed Tasmanian mare Jaguar Stone (Spieth) realised $27,500 to the bid of Philip Bingley who will keep the mare in the region.

A dispersal of shares from the estate of the late Tony Halloran also attracted strong interest, headlined by a 12.5 per cent share in three-time winner Larado (Toronado), who sold for $15,000 after 32 bids.

Entries are now open for the next Magic Millions Digital Sale (April 17–22), with nominations closing on April 15. Group-winning and Group 1-placed mare Admiration Express (My Admiration) has already been confirmed as a key entry. To lodge an entry, click here.

Green Spaces ready for Derby mission

Godolphin colt Green Spaces (Street Boss) will bid to turn a long-held ambition into reality when he lines up in Saturday’s ATC Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) at Randwick. Trainer Bjorn Baker revealed the plan was hatched after the three-year-old’s dominant Spring Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) victory at Newcastle last November, with his autumn campaign building steadily towards the Classic. The son of Street Boss (Street Cry) shapes as though the trip will suit, finishing strongly when sixth in the Randwick Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) before another eye-catching effort last start in the Rosehill Guineas (Gr 1, 2000m) when finishing second, just 1.9 lengths behind Autumn Boy (The Autumn Sun). Baker is confident the colt’s racing style will help him see out 2400 metres. “His pedigree may not suggest he'll get the trip, but everything we see in terms of his type and how he can relax so well, that's going to hold him in good stead,” the Warwick Farm-based trainer said. “His run [in the Rosehill Guineas] was really good considering they didn't go as quick up front as I thought. He lost a bit of momentum on the corner, so to get out and run second was fantastic. He's starting to come into his own and hopefully that trend continues up to 2400 metres.” Baker, who previously claimed the Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) with Lion Tamer (Storming Home) when in partnership with his father Murray, is chasing a maiden win in the Sydney equivalent – won five times by his old man. “It’s been a very special race for my father and the family so it will be very special to have a live chance,” he said. “You dream about winning it.”

In-form Lloyd to ride Linebacker in Doncaster

Zac Lloyd’s hot form has only strengthened the confidence of the Linebacker (Super Seth) camp ahead of his second crack at the Doncaster Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) at Randwick on Saturday. Lloyd has ridden seven winners across the past two Saturdays, highlighted by his Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) success aboard Guest House (Home Affairs), and has partnered Linebacker over the past 12 months. The pair combined in last year’s Doncaster, when the son of Super Seth (Dundeel) was slowly away before charging home into an unlucky eighth, beaten just 1.2 lengths by Stefi Magnetica (All Too Hard). Trainer Tom Charlton said Lloyd’s understanding of the horse would be a key asset as he looks to make amends. “He knows him well, and he got him to jump out of the gates well the other day, which is something that’s let him down a bit,” Charlton said. “When he missed the break in the Doncaster last year, I daresay it cost him the race. If we can execute well, he’ll run well. It's just whether the 49 kilo filly [Sheza Alibi] might have a bit more, but we can't worry about that.” Linebacker enters the race third-up following two weight-for-age midfield efforts behind Joliestar (Zoustar) in the Canterbury Stakes (Gr 1, 1300m) and Autumn Glow (The Autumn Sun) in the George Ryder Stakes (Gr 1, 1500m). He drops six kilos for Saturday’s handicap and Charlton expects improvement stepping out to a mile. “He just felt the pinch the other day in a tough-run 1500-metre contest,” he said. “He had a good blow, and he can do that second-up. He will run well third-up, and he gets a significant, six-kilo drop in weight. I don't think he’ll be far away.”

Nock looking ahead to second Group 1 ride

Jockey Braith Nock has been backed to make a seamless transition beyond his claim, with Annabel Archibald confident the in-form apprentice is ready to step up in Saturday’s Doncaster Mile at Randwick. Just 15 wins shy of losing his claim, Nock will take his second Group 1 ride aboard Cristal Clear (Exceedance) for the Archibald stable. “I think he’s very talented… he’s at that important stage where if he wants to stay in town he’s got to keep that momentum going,” Annabel Archibald, who trains in partnership with her husband Rob, told Racing NSW. “To me it looks like he will. We’re happy to put him on without a claim, he’s a very hard worker and deserves the opportunity.” Nock has partnered Cristal Clear as far back as a Benchmark 72 (1550m) contest last August and has remained his regular rider through a rise up the grades. The gelding gained a berth into the Doncaster via a tough first-up win in the Ajax Stakes (Gr 2, 1500m) at Rosehill on March 14, providing Nock with a first stakes success. “Every time we’ve raised the bar he’s performed,” Archibald said. “He’s come back better and he’s got such a will to win.” Cristal Clear will carry 50 kilograms in Saturday’s race, as will stablemate Hellsing (Dandy Man), a last-start runner-up in the Muswellbrook Gold Cup (1500m).

Joliestar to take in T J Smith before UK trip

Joliestar will pursue a third consecutive victory when she lines up in Saturday’s T J Smith (Gr 1, 1200m) at Randwick – a feat the mare has not yet achieved in a single campaign. Now five, the daughter of Zoustar has performed at the elite level throughout her career but trainer Chris Waller says her newfound maturity is seeing her put it together across a full preparation. “I can't fault her. She is two from two this prep, and she is a confident lady who is taking the next step with consistency,” Waller said. “You just see that with more mature horses… the five-year-olds, they know what they're doing.” Joliestar resumed with a determined win over subsequent Newmarket Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Caballus (I Am Invincible) in the Expressway Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) before backing it up in the Canterbury Stakes last time out. She heads into Saturday’s Group 1 a month between runs, a pattern that has suited her previously, while Waller has one eye on a northern hemisphere campaign later this year. The mare is set to travel to the UK for a tilt at Royal Ascot glory following the Sydney Autumn Carnival. She will have a week's hiatus after Saturday's assignment before heading to Waller’s Melbourne base, where she can work and trial at Flemington to replicate the straight course conditions at Ascot.

Tentyris out to make Everest statement

Tentyris (Credit: Sportpix)

Tentyris (Street Boss) will be out to stamp his Everest (Gr 1, 1200m) credentials in Saturday’s T J Smith Stakes, with co-trainer Sam Freedman confident the colt can bounce back from his last-start defeat in the Newmarket Handicap. Winner of both the Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) and the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m), the Godolphin colt was beaten 1.5 lengths by Caballus at Flemington on March 7. Freedman, who trains in partnership with his father Anthony, attributes Tentyris’ first defeat since last October to track pattern, rather than the cardiac arrhythmia reported post-race. “I think the horse ran very well… the track, unfortunately that day there were real lanes and the rail was one of them,” he told Racing NSW. Freedman believes Tentyris profiles similarly to past T J Smith winners who have excelled off a strong finishing burst. “His ability to absorb speed and tempo then find the line quicker than anything in the race is his asset,” Freedman said. “He’ll be watching it unfold and hopefully be the late horse on the scene.” The colt has since trialled in Sydney and heads into Saturday in good order, with Mark Zahra retaining the mount. Freedman said a tilt at The Everest remains a key spring target should Tentyris run to expectations.

Freedman praying for rain for Skybird

Skybird (Exosphere) could prove a value runner in Saturday’s TJ Smith Stakes at Randwick should the rain arrive for the Mitch Freedman-trained mare. The 2025 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes winner was unsuited by the race tempo when resuming in the Challenge Stakes (Gr 2, 1000m) at Randwick on March 7 and her Ballarat-based trainer is confident conditions and second-up improvement should bring her into contention at the weekend, particularly if the rain comes. “We’re obviously taking on stiff opposition – we’re hoping a little bit of rain can fall up there,” he told Racing.com. “She only had one trial going into her first-up run and I thought she ran really well. It looks like it’s going to map nicely for her, drawn a middle gate and the speed is drawn outside. There should be a bit of pressure early, she should be able to get a soft run, and a little bit of rainfall probably brings her into contention.” Skybird was rated a $51 chance on Wednesday, with Freedman opting for the Group 1 target over the Country Discovery (1100m) at her home track. Regardless, he encouraged everyone to support Ballarat’s Good Friday Appeal, which raises funds for the Melbourne Royal Children’s Hospital. “My young fella has some difficulties with his hearing, and they [the Royal Children’s] have set up pathways to get him the right help,” Freedman said. “It’s been super. I’ve always said, you never know when your young ones are going to need it, so dig deep and donate. It’s a great cause, and I’m glad the racing industry can do something like this raceday to help it out.”

Lindsay Park bidding for Victoria Handicap hat-trick

Lindsay Park will bid to continue their recent dominance of the Victoria Handicap (Gr 3, 1400m) at Caulfield on Saturday, with a two-pronged attack led by Here To Shock (Shocking) and Cafe Millenium (Not A Single Doubt). The stable broke a long drought in the race when Here To Shock scored in 2024, with Nicolini Vito (Nicconi) backing up 12 months later, and will now look to make it three straight editions. Here To Shock returns as topweight with 60 kilograms, a rise from the minimum he carried to victory last year. Assistant trainer JD Hayes said the stable stalwart remained in strong form. “He trialled up super and he'll run an honest race as he's so consistent,” Hayes, who trains in partnership with his brothers Ben and Will, said. A multiple stakes winner across Australia and New Zealand, Here To Shock resumed with a runner-up finish to Scheelite (Real Steel) in the Shaftesbury Avenue (Gr 3, 1400m) at Flemington on March 7 and has since pleased in a Werribee jump-out. Cafe Millenium, a Listed winner at Flemington in February, was fifth behind Scheelite in the same Group 3 contest and shapes as a capable but less predictable contender. He has been allotted 58 kilograms but faces a wide draw in barrier 15. “He's a good 1400-metre horse, but we would probably prefer him at Flemington,” Hayes said. Lindsay Park also accepted with Give Me Space (Cosmic Force), however the gelding missed a start in the capacity field and will instead contest the Noel Rundle Handicap (1400m)

Maher aiming for first Easter Cup via Kings Valley

Kings Valley (Credit: Racing Photos)

Ciaron Maher will look to secure a first Easter Cup (Gr 3, 2000m) success when Kings Valley (Territories) lines up in the Group 3 contest at Caulfield on Saturday. The five-year-old gelding heads into the race third-up and in winning form, having defeated Group winner Pounding (Exceed And Excel) when scoring in the Bairnsdale Cup (1600m) at his latest start – a result Maher hopes can serve as a springboard despite the modest profile of the race. Formerly trained in the UK, Kings Valley arrived in Australia as a maiden and broke through at his eighth start, sparking a consistent run that included victories at Caulfield Heath, Sandown and Randwick, where he defeated Birdman (Free Eagle). While last preparation proved frustrating, Maher believes a more measured build-up this time has been key to his return to form. “First-up was terrible, but then we gave him a trial and after that we took him to Caulfield for a gallop and that really brought him on,” Maher said. “And it was a brilliant ride at Bairnsdale by Tom. He had to get it right and he did and that's why he won. Last prep he never really hit the mark, but I think this prep will be a lot better. He's on the right path this time and he'll be much better at the 2000 metres.” Declan Bates takes over in the saddle on Saturday as Kings Valley looks to continue his upward trajectory.

Lovelycut back for Caulfield task

Lovelycut (Ilovethiscity) could earn a trip to South Australia this winter if she resumes in winning fashion at Pakenham on Saturday, with trainer Reece Goodwin hopeful the mare can put together a consistent campaign. The four-year-old returns in the Geoff Murphy Handicap (1200m) having shown ability in limited racing, including a Sandown win as a juvenile and stakes form during her three-year-old season. Lovelycut placed at Listed level first-up at three before finishing fourth in the Vanity Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) and then midfield, beaten less than three lengths, in the Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m). She returned last spring to post a 1400-metre win at Seymour following a light preparation. Goodwin said the mare had come back well and is ready to begin her campaign. “Off the back of last prep where she won over 1400 metres, Saturday is a good kick-off for her,” he said. “She could have run in one of the 1100-metre races at Flemington last week, but I just thought 1200 metres would be a better kick off for her. She’s there to run really well.” Lovelycut is expected to be placed carefully through the winter, with the Adelaide Carnival a potential target. “Adelaide could be on the radar depending on how she goes Saturday,” Goodwin said. “If she was to win, or run really strongly, we would have to give strong consideration to that. She’s a highly-strung mare, so travelling her would take a bit out of her, so we want to make sure if we were to go there, it was worthwhile.”

Drop back in grade suits Seraphox

Seraphox (Harry Angel) showed the benefit of race experience at Warwick Farm on Wednesday, shedding his maiden tag under James McDonald for trainer Ciaron Maher. The son of Harry Angel (Dark Angel) was far from disgraced on debut in the Todman Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m), finishing 4.1 lengths from the winner Paradoxium (Extreme Choice) after covering ground throughout, and franked that effort with a professional display back in maiden grade. Settling just off the speed, Seraphox was briefly held up on straightening before sprinting through to hold off the late challenge of The Roaring Sun (The Autumn Sun) and score by 0.4 lengths, with Rolling Home (Bivouac) finishing third, another 2.2 lengths adrift. Stable representative Amy Burke said the colt had taken natural improvement from his first outing. “He's a lovely horse and they’ve had a bit of an opinion of him from the beginning,” Burke said. “His run in the Todman was far from disgraced… he got caught wide and still stuck on well. He has really come on from that run, even in his demeanour… he’s the ultimate professional and a very nice horse going forward.” McDonald echoed that sentiment, suggesting the colt would improve further with time. “He's a nice progressive horse who will only excel as he gets further,” he said. A $220,000 Inglis Ready2Race graduate, Seraphox has been through the sales ring multiple times, having first sold as a weanling for $65,000 before making $90,000 as a yearling. Bred by Miss M Jeffcoat, he is the first foal out of Foxwedge (Fastnet Rock) mare Foxy Touch and hails from the family of Group 2 winner and Golden Slipper fourth Campione D’Italia (Snitzel), who is set to contest Saturday’s Inglis Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Randwick.

Adelaide on the radar for maiden winner Farakta

Farnan (Not A Single Doubt) filly Farakta may have earned a shot at stakes level after producing an impressive maiden victory at Geelong on Wednesday for Robbie Griffiths and Kia Ora Stud. Having finished third on debut at Pakenham on March 19, the three-year-old took natural improvement into her second start, settling on speed alongside favourite Bonus Season (Written Tycoon) before the pair staged a prolonged duel in the straight. Farakta proved the stronger late, gradually wearing down her rival to score by 0.8 lengths under Damian Lane. The filly becomes just the second runner raced jointly by Griffiths and Kia Ora, following the talented Serasana (Snitzel), who went on to claim the Sandown Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m) after a winning debut. Purchased for $360,000, Farakta shapes as a filly with upside and could now be tested at stakes level, with the Nitschke Stakes (Listed, 1400m) in Adelaide under consideration. “She’s a beautiful, big strong girl,” stable representative Sandy McKenzie told Racing.com. “She’s just going to go better and better. There’s so much upside. Robbie was going to try and get her out over a little more distance, and hopefully we head towards the Adelaide Carnival.”

Grant Burrill returns to Widden

Grant Burrill (Credit: Supplied)

Widden Stud has announced the appointment of Grant Burrill as stud manager of its Victorian farm at Riddells Creek, with Burrill to commence in the role on April 28. Burrill returns to Widden with more than two decades of experience across the thoroughbred industry in both Australia and the United States. He began his career in 2001 at Spendthrift Farm in Kentucky, where he worked as farm manager, gaining experience at one of the world’s leading breeding operations. He returned to Australia in 2005 to join Widden Stud in the Hunter Valley as assistant stud manager, a role he held for more than a decade, where he was closely involved in the day-to-day management of the farm and its breeding operations. Burrill later spent seven years as stud manager at Spendthrift Australia, overseeing the development of the Victorian farm, and most recently served as Victorian Territory manager for Horsepower Feeds. Speaking about his return to Widden, Burrill said he was looking forward to the opportunity to lead the Victorian farm. “Widden has always held a special place for me, so I’m really pleased to be coming back to take on this position in Victoria,” Burrill said. “The farm presents a fantastic opportunity, and I’m looking forward to working with the team to further develop the operation while maintaining the highest standard of care and service for our clients.” Meanwhile, Widden principal Antony Thompson said: “Grant’s extensive experience, leadership and long-standing association with Widden make him an outstanding appointment. His industry knowledge, both locally and internationally, combined with his understanding of the Widden philosophy, makes him ideally placed to lead our Victorian operation as it continues to grow.”

Bingley appointed Ballarat Turf Club CEO

Sam Bingley (Credit: CRV)

The Ballarat Turf Club has confirmed the appointment of Sam Bingley as its new chief executive officer, with the experienced sports and media executive set to commence in the role in April. Bingley brings more than 25 years’ experience across sport, media and racing, having previously held senior roles including CEO (NSW & NZ) at Sports Entertainment Network and chief commercial officer positions with North Melbourne Football Club and Crocmedia. Earlier in his career, he also worked within the racing industry at both the Melbourne Racing Club and Victoria Racing Club. Ballarat Turf Club chairman Bill Gribble said Bingley’s background across multiple sporting and commercial organisations made him a strong fit for the role and the club’s future direction. Bingley said he was looking forward to joining the club and working with the committee and team to continue building the club’s role as both a racing and community venue. He will begin in a part-time capacity from April 8 before moving into the full-time role from May 1.

Applications open for Les Young Scholarship

Applications are now open for the 2026 Les Young Scholarship, which will again provide a young thoroughbred industry participant with the opportunity to travel to the United Kingdom to study at The National Stud. The scholarship offers a tailored learning program combining practical and theoretical training across foaling, breeding, bloodstock husbandry and stable management, aimed at helping develop the skills of emerging industry professionals. Travel and accommodation expenses are included as part of the award. The scholarship honours the legacy of the late Les Young, who was widely respected as a bloodstock agent, journalist and owner-breeder, and was known for his commitment to supporting young people entering the industry. In 2026, eligibility has been expanded, with applicants now able to apply up to the age of 30, provided they have at least two years’ experience in breeding, bloodstock, spelling or racing. Applications close on May 1 at 5pm (AEST) and you can apply here.

RV introduces fuel relief payments

Racing Victoria (RV) has introduced a fuel relief initiative to help trainers, jockeys and Off The Track re-trainers to manage rising transport and travel costs across the state. Under the measures, which began on April 1, trainers will receive a $100 payment per runner in Victorian races, while jockeys will be paid $50 for each meeting they attend in addition to normal riding fees. Subsidies for Off The Track re-trainers involved in retraining and rehoming retired racehorses will also increase by 10 per cent. The initiative comes as increasing fuel prices continue to add pressure to the cost of moving horses and travelling to race meetings, particularly for regional participants who cover significant distances each week. RV said the payments are intended to help maintain participation levels across the industry while operating costs remain high. The payments will be made through the RV’s existing payment processes and will operate as a temporary measure.

Racing SA also to introduce fuel package

Racing SA has also introduced a temporary fuel relief package to assist trainers, riders and clubs, with the measures to run throughout April. The initiative, effective from April 1 to April 30, follows consultation with stakeholder groups amid ongoing concern around rising fuel costs and supply pressures. The package will be reviewed at the end of the month. Support includes travel-based payments for trainers, rider assistance at meetings with limited opportunities, and additional funding for clubs managing venue and track preparation costs. South Australian trainers will receive payments based on round-trip travel distance, ranging from $25 per starter for trips up to 50 kilometres to $75 per starter for distances beyond 150km, with caps at each tier. Interstate trainers will also be eligible at Saturday metropolitan meetings. Riders who earn three riding fees or fewer at a meeting will receive $50, while clubs will be allocated an additional $1,000 per meeting. Racing SA’s equine welfare partners will also each receive a one-off $5,000 payment. Damien Wilton said the initiative would provide timely support. “Rising fuel prices affect every part of a trainer’s operation, from raceday travel through to feed, freight and general business costs,” Wilton said. SAJA president Eran Boyd said the package acknowledged the pressures facing riders, particularly those with limited mounts. Racing SA chief executive Nick Bawden said the measures were designed to support participation while broader conditions continue to be assessed.

Industry workforce survey open until late April

Thoroughbred Breeders Australia reminds industry participants that the national workforce survey for the thoroughbred breeding sector remains open until late April. The survey is being conducted in partnership with AgriFutures Australia and Brand Rebellion as part of a broader project to develop a workforce strategy for the Australian thoroughbred breeding industry. Open to both employers and employees, the survey aims to gather insights into workforce experiences, attraction and retention challenges, career pathways and how the industry is perceived both within the sector and more broadly. The findings will help inform a long-term workforce strategy designed to support the sustainability, capability and growth of the breeding industry, while also providing important data to support advocacy to government and key decision-makers on workforce issues affecting the sector. All responses will remain confidential and anonymous. Industry participants are encouraged to complete the survey before it closes in late April and to share it with colleagues across their networks to help ensure broad industry input. You can complete the survey here.

Port Macquarie transferred to Tuncurry

Saturday’s Port Macquarie meeting has been transferred to Tuncurry-Forster Racecourse, with several race distance amendments. The rail will be positioned out two metres from the 1000-metre to the 350-metre mark before a cutaway applies, with the remainder of the track in the true position. King hoping to continue sparkling form at Ellerslie

Burnerphone (Credit: Race Images)

Matamata trainer Benji King will look to continue his purple patch of form when he heads to Ellerslie on Saturday with a small but progressive team of runners. Promising three-year-old Burnerphone (Microphone) lines up in the Myracehorse 1600 (1600m), while last-start winner What Next (Savile Row) steps up to Rating 65 grade in the Elsdon Park 1500 (1500m). Now in his third season of training, King has prepared nine winners from 59 starters, but his recent strike-rate has been particularly strong. Since early December, his team has produced six winners from 21 runners. Operating a boutique operation of around ten horses alongside partner Lena Jones, he has enjoyed recent success with the likes of Predominance (Preferment), Mid Ocean (Ocean Park) and Up With Ace (Ace High). “I’m definitely happy with how things are going, but I’m not getting carried away,” King said. “We’ve been very fortunate and just working hard to get the best results for the people who have supported us.” Burnerphone brings strong form into Saturday’s contest, having finished second in a blanket finish behind Confesara (Toronado) at Ellerslie on Champions’ Day, with subsequent Wellington Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m) winner Origin Of Love (Snitzel) back in third. “It’s rock solid form and fair to say we’re pretty excited by what she’s done,” King said. “If she runs well again, I’d like to look at the Championship Stakes later in the month.” Meanwhile, What Next impressed winning a mile maiden at Hawera last start, but a wide draw leaves connections weighing up whether he takes his place. “He looks very promising… but I would have preferred a kinder draw,” King said.

Telperion mare ready to turn fortunes around

Ross Beckett is anticipating a sharper showing from Gemma Flitz (Teleperion) when the mare lines up in Thursday’s Greg Jones Memorial Handicap (1300m) at Ashburton. The daughter of Telperion (Street Cry) has had two runs this preparation, finishing unplaced at Riccarton before again missing the placings at Ashburton after covering ground throughout. “She didn’t have much luck, and she should get a better trip this time and hopefully the track dries out a bit more,” Beckett said. “I’ll be disappointed if she wasn’t in the first four and she’ll take further benefit from another run.” Formerly trained in Matamata, Gemma Flitz broke her maiden for Karen Fursdon before joining Beckett’s Yaldhurst stable, where she has thrived on the Riccarton synthetic, winning five races including a hat-trick last winter. “She likes a good track and we haven’t had a summer in Canterbury this year,” Beckett said. Leading South Island apprentice Donovan Cooper retains the ride. Beckett will also be represented by Canterbury Flight (Verdi), who is chasing a deserved maiden win over a mile after four seconds from her past five starts. “She’s been a bit stiff not to have won a race,” Beckett said. Grouse (Darci Brahma) completes the team in the 1400-metre maiden contest having produced a solid effort at the track last start despite limited running room.

HK: Atzeni hopes Red Lion can roar in Chairman’s Trophy

Red Lion (left) (Credit: HKJC)

Andrea Atzeni will look to maintain his strong run of form when he partners a leading duo at Sha Tin’s Group 2 meeting on Easter Monday, ahead of Champions Day later this month. The Italian led all jockeys in March with 14 winners, lifting his seasonal tally to 43 and placing him third in the Hong Kong championship behind Zac Purton and Hugh Bowman. Atzeni is set to combine with trainer John Size’s pair Red Lion (Belardo) and Stellar Express (Zoustar) in the Chairman’s Trophy (Gr 2, 1600m) and Sprint Cup (Gr 2, 1200m) respectively. Group 1 winner Red Lion is seeking a return to form after two unplaced efforts, with Atzeni hopeful rain will aid his chances. “It seems like he’s the type of horse who comes good at this time of the year, and also like he enjoys a bit of juice in the ground,” he said. The gelding famously upset Voyage Bubble (Deep Field) in last year’s Champions Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) and has trialled encouragingly ahead of his return. Stablemate Stellar Express has been a sharp improver this season, highlighted by his victory in the Bauhinia Sprint Trophy (Gr 3, 1000m), but faces a stern test against champion sprinter Ka Ying Rising (Shamexpress), who is chasing a 19th straight win. “He’s flying… hopefully, he can run well,” Atzeni said.

Sales News

'I have no doubt that in months and years to come, we’ll be talking about the 2026 Chairman’s Sale'

Bella Nipotina topped last year's Chairman's Sale (Credit: Inglis)

A top-drawer line-up of the finest breeding stock – as well as a share in Newgate stalwart Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt) – headline the catalogue for the tenth edition of the Inglis Chairman’s Sale, which is now available online.

A total of 104 lots have been catalogued for the sale, including 67 stakes horses or stakes producers, 27 pregnant mares on their first or second cover, 95 fillies/mares aged ten or younger, and 24 mares that are free of Danehill (Danzig) blood.

There are a number of high-class fillies and mares included in the sale, such as Goodwood Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Benedetta (Hellbent), three-time Group 1 scorer Provence (Savabeel), millionaire earners Arabian Summer (Too Darn Hot) and Generosity (Divine Prophet), and multiple stakes winners such as In Flight (Flying Artie), Eternal Flame (Sacred Falls), Jennilala (Shalaa), Spicy Martini (Justify), and Just Feelin' Lucky (Justify).

Also included is Aeliana’s (Castelvecchio) half-sister Summer In Capri (Proisir), Classique Legend’s (Not A Single Doubt) half-sister I Am Famous (I Am Invincible), as well as the dams of the Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) quinella in Guest House (Home Affairs) and Streisand (Magnus) and the dam of Group 1-winning juvenile Captured By Love (Written Tycoon).

Mares in foal to stallions such as Extreme Choice - whose yearlings averaged more than $1.5 million at this week’s Easter Yearling Sale - I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit), Zoustar (Northern Meteor), Anamoe (Street Boss), Harry Angel (Dark Angel), Home Affairs (I Am Invincible), Not This Time (Giant’s Causeway), Ole Kirk (Written Tycoon), Shinzo (Snitzel), Street Boss (Street Cry), Super Seth (Dundeel), The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice), and Too Darn Hot (Dubawi) will go through the ring.

The auction will be held at Riverside Stables on the evening of Thursday, May 7 from 4pm and will again be held with a ‘where elegance meets excellence’ theme.

Inglis Bloodstock CEO Sebastian Hutch was “delighted” with the catalogue.

“The Inglis Chairman’s Sale is the most fun sale of the year, anywhere in the world and it provides an unparalleled experience for both vendors and buyers,’’ Hutch said.

“From what we understand is likely to be on the market in 2026, the Chairman’s Sale will contain a higher proportion of quality breeding stock available to the Australasian market than ever before.

“This is the tenth year of the Chairman’s Sale and the style of the evening has created an unrivalled atmosphere deserving of an annual celebration of some of the most desirable race fillies and mares in the world each year.

“In the first year, amongst the 61 fillies and mares offered, acting on behalf of Torryburn Stud, Belmont Bloodstock purchased Miss Interiors for $625,000 and she would go on to become the dam of Coolmore Stud Stakes winner Home Affairs, now a Golden Slipper-winning sire with his first crop.

“The sale has been generating results of major significance, in terms of both the local and international bloodstock market, ever since.

“Golden Slipper-winning colts, Stay Inside and Shinzo, were sold in utero at the sale while other mares offered at Chairman’s include the dams of subsequent Group 1 winners Autumn Glow, Imperatriz, Home Affairs, Apocalyptic, Caballus, She’s Extreme and international star In Italian amongst others.

“I have no doubt that in months and years to come, we’ll be talking about the 2026 Chairman’s Sale and the unbelievable results that breeders were able to achieve from being active participants in the auction.’’

Supplementary entries for the Chairman’s Sale will remain open until 5pm on Friday, April 24. To submit a supplementary entry, contact a member of the Inglis bloodstock team or click here. To view the catalogue click here.

ANZ News

There are always some things - axioms, beliefs, shards of received wisdom - in racing and breeding that are held by many as gospel but don’t stand up to close examination.

Dundeel (High Chaparral) fillies have long laboured under a not-so-flattering reputation, dealing not only with temperament but their performance compared to his sons. The girls have been building away from it in recent years, but the mud takes some removing.

Yet the Arrowfield Stud stallion had ten stakes winners last season, and seven of them were female. And of his past 13 stakes victories, fillies and mares have accounted for 11 of them.

Two came along within an hour on Saturday - two of his three stakes winners this season - when Matt Smith’s four-year-old mare Idle Flyer took Rosehill’s Emancipation Stakes (Gr 2, 1500m), and Team Hayes’s three-year-old filly Stung won Morphettville’s Clare Lindop Stakes (Listed, 1600m).

It’s true, Dundeel’s boys have supplied him with more stakes winners overall - with 26 to 14, and with eight of his nine Group 1 victors - the female exception being last season’s South Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) queen Femminile. That top-tier picture could change by the end of the autumn, with Idle Flyer and Stung aiming for elite targets in the Queen Of The Turf Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) and Australasian Oaks (Gr 1, 2000m) respectively.

But given Dundeel’s spate of female black type victors since the start of last season, the balance is shifting dramatically. The story was similar with Dundeel’s sire High Chaparral (Sadler’s Wells) in Australia, with his females catching up to his males over time, and many believe that with both sires, this was down to breeders better learning how to breed to them.

One breeder has built a proud record in this area with Dundeel. Of his 14 female stakes winners, Torryburn Stud has bred - or had a hand in breeding - three. And that’s from only five Dundeel fillies they’ve produced.

The Hunter Valley Farm bred Idle Flyer - who now has a Group 2 to go with her other black type victory in last spring’s Angst Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m).

Torryburn also advised associate Alex Illes on the breeding of triple Group winner Hope In Your Heart, recommending Dundeel as the right choice especially at his then fourth-season fee of $27,500 - far short of the $88,000 (inc GST) he commands now.

And Torryburn are the breeders of Mare Of Mt Buller, who claimed Randwick’s Epona Stakes (Gr 3, 1900m) last autumn.

“It’s a shame Dundeel fillies have this reputation, because they’re brilliant racehorses. Some of them can be a bit quirky, but once you get on the right side of them, they’re fine,” Torryburn’s Mel Copelin told It’s In The Blood.

Copelin has her thoughts on the ideal type of mare for Dundeel physically, saying: “You want a good, big strong mare, and Dundeel puts the athleticism into them.”

That’s the type of mare Torryburn acquired when they bought Idle Flyer’s dam Progressive (Street Cry) for $325,000 at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale of 2016.

She’d won four times, twice in Sydney, and was from an esteemed family stemming back to her fourth dam, American blue hen Best In Show (Traffic Judge). Second dam Twyla (Danehill) was a half-sister to Australian great Shantha’s Choice (Canny Lad), and thus Twyla is a three-quarter sister to the great Redoute’s Choice and his fellow Group 1 winners Al Maher and Platinum Scissors - all by Danehill (Danzig).

And Progressive’s dam Movin’ Out (Encosta De Lago) was a three-quarter sister to another of Shantha’s Choice’s Group 1 winners in Manhattan Rain, plus his fellow black type victors Niagara and Echoes Of Heaven, all three also by Encosta De Lago (Fairy King).

“Progressive was a lovely Street Cry mare and I loved her physically,” Copelin says. “You could see that it was - pardon the pun - a progressive family.

“She had a beautiful pedigree with Dancing Show and Special there, and all those stallions like Redoute’s Choice, Platinum Scissors and Manhattan Rain. It was a beautiful branch of that Twyla family.”

Looking at the mating that produced Idle Flyer, having Encosta De Lago as her second damsire effected an enticing nick, bringing together those famed full-brothers Sadler’s Wells (Northern Dancer) - Dundeel’s grandsire - and Fairy King, in the third and fourth removes.

“We always look for full relations like that,” Copelin says. “A lot of people will tell you a lot of champions have got them duplicated in their pedigree.”

There was similar going on with Hope In Your Heart - a doubling up of Sadler’s Wells, at 3m x 3m, since his son Montjeu is Hope In Your Heart’s damsire.

Femminile also takes advantage of Dundeel having Sadler’s Wells, with that sire doubled in her pedigree at 3m x 5f, the bottom mention coming as Sadler’s Wells is the second damsire of Femminile’s damsire, Pierro (Lonhro).

Dundeel (Credit: Arrowfield)

As Copelin mentioned, Idle Flyer draws considerable influence from the key American mare Special (Forli), the second dam of those brothers Sadler’s Wells and Fairy King through her daughter Fairy Bridge (Bold Reason).

With Dundeel inbred to Special, she’s in Idle Flyer’s pedigree at 5f, 6m x 6f, with the middle one being Nureyev (Northern Dancer), Zabeel’s damsire.

At play the other way in the first six columns is that other powerful, and more common, American blue hen Natalma (Native Dancer), at 5m x 6f, 6m. Her fabled son Northern Dancer (Nearctic) is the sire of Sadler’s Wells and Fairy King, while the daughter in that blend is Raise The Standard (Hoist The Flag), second dam of Street Cry’s sire Machievallian (Mr Prospector).

Street Cry’s surging CV as a broodmare sire in Australia received a double boost on Saturday. Not only is he the maternal grandfather of Idle Flyer but also Storm Leopard (Ghaiyyath), who took the Tulloch Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m).

As a result, Street Cry sits fifth on the Australian broodmare sires’ table, with his top representative being Tom Kitten (Harry Angel), winner of the All Star Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) in March. That’s off a personal best finish of third in 2024, but his top earning grandson then came from non-Australian stock in the form of Hong Kong raider Romantic Warrior (Acclamation) and his Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) triumph.

Coincidentally, Storm Leopard also has a doubling of Sadler’s Wells, at 4m x 5m, though that’s of course nothing to do with Street Cry. It comes via Ghaiyyath’s (Dubawi) damsire Galileo, and In The Wings, the grandsire of Storm Legend’s granddam.

Back to Idle Flyer’s dam Progressive, Torryburn have done reasonably well out for their $325,000 outlay on her. At Magic Millions 2022, her colt fourth foal by The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice) was bought by Chris Waller and Guy Mulcaster for $400,000. Racing as Influential, the now five-year-old has won twice and run fourth at Listed level and fifth in a Group 3.

At the Gold Coast this year, Torryburn netted $200,000 for Progressive’s filly by Harry Angel (Dark Angel).

In between those two, however, came Idle Flyer. Possibly with the Dundeel filly reputation at play, she’s been the cheapest of all of Progressive’s six sold yearlings, knocked down to Smith and Randwick Bloodstock Agency for just $70,000, at Inglis Classic in 2023.

She’s now reaped almost $600,000 in just 14 starts.

Meanwhile, another Dundeel female brought a windfall at this week’s Inglis Easter sale in Victoria Quay - who was the stallion’s first female stakes winner in fact, taking the 2020 Wakeful Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m).

Her highly promising career was sadly restricted by injury to just six starts, but she’s rewarded her owners Iskander Racing with her colt second foal by Home Affairs (I Am Invincible) who fetched $1.3 million on Sunday, sold from Milburn Creek’s draft to Ted Huglin and Clarke Bloodstock.

Dundeel also had a $1.3 million seller himself, in Widden Stud’s colt out of quadruple Group winner Fiesta (I Am Invincible), bought by Jamie McCalmont for Tom Magnier.
