Swettenham Stud has announced Frankel’s (Galileo) Group 1 Prix Jacques le Marois (1600m) winner Diego Velazquez will stand for an introductory service fee of $27,500 (inc GST) this year.

Owner Adam Sangster will stand him at the Nagambie nursery alongside champion Irish-bred Victorian sire Toronado (High Chaparral), Lofty Strike (Snitzel), Wooded (Wootten Basset) and I Am Immortal (I Am Invincible).

What's On

Diego Velazquez is a physical masterpiece and brings the incomparable Frankel bloodline to Nagambie. A 2.4 million guineas yearling, he was a precocious Group 2 winner at two and an exceptional Group 2 winner at three before progressing to Group 1 glory at four in the Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville.

Joining the honour-roll of champions like Dubawi (Dubai Millennium) and Kingman (Invincible Spirit), he defeated Group 1 winners such as Notable Speech (Dubawi) (US Breeders' Cup Mile) and Docklands (Massaat) (Queen Anne Stakes).

Diego Velazquez is the total package: elite pedigree, precocious speed, and Group 1 miler toughness.

“Frankel boasts an impressive 18 per cent stakes winners to runners record in Australia, so it’s a great privilege to provide the Australian industry with the most significant injection of Frankel blood to date,” Sangster said.

“To get a gauge of how nice of a horse Diego is, he was one of the most expensive Frankel yearlings ever sold, selling for the equivalent of AU$5 million. Only the Winx filly has sold for more than that in Australia this decade.”

Champion trainer Aidan O’Brien is a keen student of turf history and needed little prompting to recognise the significance of Diego Velazquez winning the Prix Jacques le Marois in the Swettenham silks.

“It’s incredible and I’m so delighted for the Sangster family,” the Ballydoyle maestro said. “Diego Velazquez has done everything. He’s a great model and he’s determined. He loves fast ground and is fast himself.”

Toronado remains the benchmark for consistency as the undisputed king of Victoria and his reign will continue after finishing as a top-three sire in the world for winners in 2025.

Toronado is currently the number one active sire in Hong Kong, fuelled by the HK 4YO Series success of Little Paradise and Stormy Grove.

Adam Sangster

Domestically, he leads the Victorian sires table for winners (134) and wins (211) leading into Easter and those stats have been bolstered by the immediate impact of his first crop from the $80,000 fee headlined by recent VRC Sires’ Produce (Gr 2, 1400m) winner Grinzinger Heart.

In 2026, the market continued to show an insatiable appetite for the Toronado progeny. He led all stallions at the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale by aggregate. And at the recent Inglis Easter Yearling Sale, he managed to produce an exceptionally strong median price of $400,000 (5x service fee).

Toronado will stand for an unchanged service fee of $88,000 (inc GST).

Lofty Strike is the blue-blooded speedster of the roster. A precocious colt, he burst on the scene as an undefeated two-year-old in the Blue Diamond Prelude (Gr 3, 1100m) and then trained on at three with another eye-catching finish to win the Rubiton Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) at Sandown.

Toronado (Credit: Swettenham Stud)

He was also a multiple Group 1 placegetter that season against all ages in the Oakleigh Plate (1100m) and Newmarket Handicap (1200m).

Lofty Strike is by champion sire Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) out of Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Overreach (Exceed And Excel). His first foals have surpassed the lofty expectations of breeders as they head to the 2026 weanling and 2027 yearling sales.

Buyers will have the opportunity to capitalise on what we predict will be a precocious and speedy first crop. Lofty Strike will remain unchanged at a $22,000 (inc GST) fee this year.

Wooded validated his future in both hemispheres when his first northern crop produced the Group 1 French performers Woodshauna and Jawwal.

Woodshauna won the Prix Jean Prat (Gr 1, 1400m) at Deauville and Jawwal was beaten a short-neck when runner-up in the Prix de l'Abbaye (Gr 1, 1000m) at Longchamp.

With Australian trainers reporting his first southern crop are developing into quality three-year-old types, Wooded offers world-class Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj) blood at an accessible price point with plenty of upside. He will return to Swettenham for a $16,500 (inc GST) fee.

I Am Immortal is the ultimate value upgrader and continues to punch well above his service fee. That was highlighted when he was the most represented stallion in this year’s $1 million VOBIS Platinum Showdown (1200m).

With Saturday stars like McGaw, Athanatos and Immortal Star keeping him in the headlines, and having covered over 100 mares last season, he remains the go-to for breeders looking for consistency from a modest investment.

I Am Immortal will continue to represent excellent value at an $8,800 (inc GST) fee.

With the Victorian breeding industry continuing to lead the way through the lucrative VOBIS scheme, Swettenham’s 2026 roster is strategically positioned to offer breeders "Quality at every price point."

Morning Briefing

Australia

Campione D’Italia on target for Sires’

Chris Waller believes emerging colt Campione D’Italia (Snitzel) has come through the Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) in excellent order as he prepares to step up to 1400 metres in Saturday’s ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Randwick. The Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) colt produced one of the standout performances in the Slipper when charging from last to finish fourth, just two lengths behind winner Guest House (Home Affairs), and Waller said the run had taken little out of the youngster. “You wouldn’t know he’s had a run,” Waller said. “The Golden Slipper was only his third start in a race and he’s getting more tractable each time he runs. He’s learning all the time and he’s coping really well with his racing.” Campione D’Italia has drawn barrier three in the 14-horse field, while stablemate Fireball (Snitzel) faces a wider task after drawing gate 12. Waller said Fireball’s midfield finish in the Slipper suggested he too would appreciate the rise in distance. “He wasn’t beaten far and I thought he raced like a 1400-metre horse too,” Waller said. Five runners from the Golden Slipper will contest the Sires’ Produce Stakes, the second leg of the juvenile triple crown, which concludes with the Champagne Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) later this month.

Berry confident Storm Leopard has Derby blend

Storm Leopard (Credit: Racing Photos)

Tommy Berry is confident Storm Leopard (Ghaiyyath) has the right mix of stamina and class to make an impact in Saturday's ATC Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) at Randwick. The jockey, chasing a second win in the race, said: "They need to stay, but you talk about any stayer, whether in a Derby or a Melbourne Cup, they've got that bit of brilliance as well. Hopefully, my bloke does, which we feel he does. If he can show his turn of foot at the end of 2400 metres, it's going to take him a long way." Storm Leopard is trained by Ben, Will & JD Hayes and enhanced his claims with a dominant victory in last Saturday's Tulloch Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m) where he was forced to make an early move before proving strong through the line. “I thought I might be vulnerable late, but he was strong through the line and I eased him down,” Berry said. “If he can show that turn of foot at the end of 2400 [metres], it will take him a long way.” Storm Leopard ($5) is one of eight rides for Berry at Randwick, six of them at single-figure odds including the emerging Profoundly (Farnan) ($5) in the Adrian Knox Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m).

Jones hoping Vivy Air can deliver Doncaster success

Reece Jones is hoping to repay the loyalty of Vivy Air’s (Hellbent) connections with a Group 1 victory when the mare lines up in Saturday’s Doncaster Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) at Randwick. Jones partnered the Ciaron Maher-trained mare when she resumed with a strong third placing behind Lazzura (Snitzel) in the Coolmore Classic (Gr 1, 1500m) and has retained the ride for the $4 million feature. “I’m rapt to be able to ride her,” Jones said. “I’m really grateful to the owners and connections for sticking with me. It was great to see that faith and hopefully I can reward them with a Group 1.” Jones has already enjoyed major success for the ownership group, winning the Five Diamonds (1800m) aboard Vivy Air, and he believes the mare has returned in strong form this preparation. “I’d like to think she has come back a bit stronger,” he said. “She travelled really well the other day and she has settled down a lot from previous preparations.”

Schiller-Briasa bond key to T J Smith defence

Smart Missile (Fastnet Rock) gelding Briasa will bid to join an elite group of sprinters when he lines up in Saturday’s T J Smith Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Randwick, with the grey chasing successive victories in the feature. The Team Hawkes-trained gelding will again be partnered by hoop Tyler Schiller, who has built a strong association with the sprinter. Schiller has partnered Briasa in 12 of his 15 starts. “He mopes around the stable like a stayer, but he's one of the fastest horses I've sat on,” Schiller Said. The pair combined to win last years T J Smith, with Briasa entering the race off a fourth placing in The Galaxy (Gr 1, 1100m), a scenario mirrored this season after another fast-finishing effort in the Rosehill sprint last start. Schiller believes he is going as well, if not better than he was 12 months ago. "Weight differential in the Galaxy this year to last year had a big bearing," Schiller said. "If he'd had the same weight as last year, he probably sits three-wide with cover and wins, but having the extra kilos was the big difference. He's definitely going as well. Maybe better. There were no A graders there (in the Galaxy), so he will need to lift again second-up, which he usually does. His form shows his second-up run is usually his best, so fingers crossed." A field of nine is set to contest the race, including Tentyris (Street Boss), Everest (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Giga Kick (Scissor Kick) and Joliestar (Zoustar). A second victory in the race would see him join dual winners Nature Strip (Nicconi), Chautauqua (Encosta De Lago) and Black Caviar (Bel Esprit).

Archibalds left waiting on Nepo Baby gaining P J Bell start

Annabel and Rob Archibald will rely on scratchings in the hope to secure Nepo Baby (Lucky Vega), who is currently second emergency, a start in Saturday’s P J Bell Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Randwick. Despite her position outside the field, Annabel rates Nepo Baby as the stable's leading chance. “I was surprised she was an emergency, You'd think a filly that placed in the Light Fingers [Stakes] would get in,” Archibald said. “She is going great guns, and she is drawn quite well. She is probably the best [chance] of them." If she gains a start she will join stablemates Kujenga (King’s Legacy), Wootton Lass (Wootton Bassett) and Tupakara (Trapeze Artist). The three-year-old filly has been a consistent contender in her four starts to date, winning her first two and running third in the next two, most recently in the Light Finger stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) where she was less than a length behind the winner and subsequent Group 1-placed Savvy Hallie (Hellbent). Kujenga resumes having finished fourth in last spring’s Furious Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) first-up, while Wootton Lass has been honest in easier company at her prior two starts. The stable will be represented across the Randwick card by a number of quality runners including Pappa Blue (Almanzor) in the Carbine Club Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) and Cristal Clear (Exceedance) in the Doncaster Mile, the latter coming off a fighting win in the Group 2 Ajax Stakes over 1500 metres.

Snowden hoping Plaintiff can take step up in grade

Plaintiff (Credit: Sportpix)

Trainer Peter Snowden will test the quality of unbeaten three-year-old filly Plaintiff (Zoustar) when she resumes in Saturday’s P J Bell Stakes. The $2.2 million Inglis Easter Purchase, the highest-priced Zoustar (Northern Meteor) sold in 2024, faces an early challenge from a wide barrier in a competitive field, but Snowden is keen to press on with the assignment as a springboard to further black-type targets. Speaking to Racing NSW, Snowden said he is looking for the filly to show her class under pressure. “The good ones still run well, they find a way, She's going to face adversity, but the good ones do find a bit more. I’m really happy with her, both her trials have been good and she’s come back in good order,” said Snowden. Plaintiff has impressed with each of her wins and has shown versatility when winning a 1000-metre Rosehill trial on a Heavy 8. The Randwick trainer indicated Saturday’s run could determine whether she progresses to the James Carr Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) later in the carnival.

Dale gives Canadian Ruler thumbs up for Country Championships Final

Goulburn-based trainer Matt Dale is more than satisfied his Country Championship Final (1400m) contender Canadian Ruler (Vancouver) is primed and ready for Saturday's event at Randwick following his final piece of work earlier this week. Speaking to Racing NSW, Dale said: “He had a good gallop on the Goulburn course proper on Tuesday… it was exactly what we wanted to see from him. He showed good intent there, his fitness levels are great and he looks well.” The gelding, who has been in great form this preparation with two wins and a placing from three starts, has drawn barrier two and has proven versatile in all conditions. “He’s drawn nicely in gate two and he’ll be up on the speed, we’re hoping he’ll be up in the first four early," Dale said. “It looks a very typical open and even race but we’re ready to go and roll the dice. Luck will play a big part in it but he’s a genuine top three hope for us.” The gelding is expected to have strong on course support from the in-form Darby Racing syndication team, who have enjoyed plenty of success at the highest level in recent weeks, and his large group of owners. “A lot of owners will be trackside for naturally one of the biggest days of the year with the Darby Syndication crew there in force,” Dale added.

Brown hoping Von Hauke turns a corner at Caulfield

Trainer Cliff Brown is optimistic that Von Hauke (Savabeel) may deliver on his potential after three years of patience and persistence. He lines up in the Victoria Handicap (Gr 3, 1400m) on Saturday for his first run of the campaign. The six-year-old has long shown ability, highlighted by his Crystal Mile (Gr 2, 1600m) win at Moonee Valley last October when beating Golden Path (Belardo). But the gelding has been his own worst enemy according to Brown who describes his mishaps as “kids stuff”, doing things wrong in his races and a paddock accident that required surgery but he feels the penny has finally dropped. Von Hauke has typically been kept to shorter trips when fresh, settling back before finishing off, but Brown has opted to start him over 1400 metres in the belief his racing manners have improved allowing him to settle closer. "The reason has been he's been such a hard going horse, but he seems to have grown up a lot lately," Brown said. "It may not work, but he seems a lot better in himself and not wanting to overdo things as badly as he has in the past. Hopefully, at this trip he can be handier and when he does get to the races, he is a lot more grown up. He's come up very good but first-up at the 1400 [metres], he will improve. He had a great prep last time with the only failure he had was on that bottomless track on Champions Day, but bar that, he's really well." A decision will be made on his campaign path after Saturday, with an option to head to Hong Kong for the Champions Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) at Sha Tin in April or stay closer to home and head to Brisbane for the Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m) at Eagle Farm in June.

Lindsay Park target Easter Cup breakthrough

Bankers Choice (Credit: Racing Photos)

Lindsay Park will look to break through for a first Easter Cup (Gr 3, 2000m) success in over a decade when they saddle Bankers Choice (Mongolian Khan) and Plymouth (The Autumn Sun) for Saturday’s Group 3 contest at Caulfield. Trainers Ben, Will and JD Hayes have dominated the Victoria Handicap in recent years, and will bid for a third straight win on Saturday with Here To Shock (Shocking) and Cafe Millennium (Not A Single Doubt). However, the Easter Cup has proved more elusive to the brothers, and has been won just once this century by the stable when Jet Away (Cape Cross) scored in 2013 for David Hayes and Tom Dabernig. JD Hayes said Bankers Choice had returned in strong order, following a third placing in the Peter Young Stakes (Gr 2, 1800m) at Caulfield. “It was as good a first-up run that he has had in his career,” Hayes said. “He's right on track for the 2000 metres and it looks right in his sweet spot.” The stayer will carry 60 kilograms and again be partnered by Daniel Stackhouse. Meanwhile, Plymouth heads into the race off a runner-up finish in the Albury Gold Cup (Listed, 2000m) and is rated among the better chances in an open market. “He was very good in the Albury Cup,” Hayes said. “He was genuine and did everything right, but I think he will appreciate getting back on his Melbourne leg.” Plymouth will carry 57.5 kilograms and will be ridden for the third-straight time by Luke Currie.

Torsheen thriving back at sprint trips

Torsheen (Toronado) will look to continue her strong campaign when she lines up in Saturday’s Jack Elliott Handicap (1200m) at Caulfield for trainers Shane Nichols and Hayden Black. The filly has been in excellent form this preparation, highlighted by a track-record-breaking win over 1200 metres at Sale followed by placings at Sandown and Caulfield Heath, before another victory at the latter track. Her latest effort, a placing in the Don Casboult Classic (Gr 3, 1200m) behind Point Barrow (Blue Point), particularly pleased connections. “It took Point Barrow to run her down at Caulfield last time,” Nichols said. “It would have been lovely for a black-type win, but at least it gives her a Group 3 placing. The tempo of the 1200 [metres] really suits her… it probably just took her a bit of time to mature into herself.”Torsheen is set to be offered as a racing prospect at next month’s Inglis Chairman’s Sale and is expected to attract strong interest. “She’s a magnificent looking filly… I think she could bring quite a significant amount of money,” Nichols said.

Half Yours on track for All-Aged return

Half Yours (St Jean) is nearing his racetrack return in strong order, with co-trainer Calvin McEvoy confident the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) and Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) hero is primed for his first-up assignment in the All-Aged Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Randwick on April 18. The gelding impressed in a Flemington jump-out on Thursday under Jamie Melham, his second trial of the preparation, cruising to an easy victory over Denmark (Camelot) in over 1000 metres. “We think he’s going really well,” McEvoy told Racing.com. “This morning over we just asked a little bit more of him…to the eye, it looked very, very good and the horse pulled up bouncing off the track. I think he’s in a perfect spot.” Half Yours will tackle the All-Aged first-up against race-fit opposition, including horses coming through the T J Smith Stakes, with McEvoy noting the importance of having the gelding sharp for the 1400-metre test. “He needs to be sharp. It’s going to be a big test for him over that sort of trip,” he said. “On this morning, he’ll run well and if he gets a soft track, who knows.” Following his Sydney return, Half Yours is set for a Queensland campaign, including the Hollindale Stakes (Gr 2, 1800m), Doomben Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) and The Q22 (Gr 2, 2200m), before a spring tilt at the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) at Flemington. “All roads lead to the Cox Plate here at HQ,” McEvoy said.

Blueblood filly Fiaba lands first trial win at Rosehill

Nations League pictured as a yearling (Credit: Magic Millions)

A number of well-bred juveniles caught the eye at the Rosehill trials on Thursday, including several closely related to high-priced yearlings sold at Inglis Easter this week.

Fiaba – an I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) half-sister to Everest winner Classique Legend (Not A Single Doubt) – was a standout, recording her first trial win at her fourth attempt for trainer Chris Waller, edging out fellow I Am Invincible juvenile Air Of Solace, the first foal of Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Odeum (Written Tycoon), by 0.2 lengths under James McDonald.

Fiaba’s dam Pinocchio (Encosta De Lago) sold for $1.15 million at the 2024 Inglis Chairman’s Sale, and her latest I Am Invincible yearling filly realised $650,000 when selling to the Ridgmont Fillies Partnership and Clarke Bloodstock at Easter earlier this week. Meanwhile, Air Of Solace’s brother sold for $450,000 to Archibald Racing and William Johnson Bloodstock.

Another to catch the eye was Wild Atlantic, an Exceedance (Exceed And Excel) colt from the Team Hawkes stable who made it two-from-two at the trials when defeating the $2.7 million Snitzel colt St Gotthard by 0.3 lengths.

A $320,000 purchase for his stable at Magic Millions Gold Coast last year, Wild Atlantic is a half-brother to stakes winners Aspect (Pluck) and Brown Ben (Big Brown), all out of Lonhro (Octagonal) mare Innishbeg.

St Gotthard, a full-brother to Group 1 winner and Coolmore sire Switzerland, is also trained by Waller and is out of Ms Bad Behavior (Blame), whose latest Snitzel colt sold for $2 million at Inglis Easter to James Harron’s Colt Partnership, Tony Fung Colts and Tom Magnier.

Also from the Waller stable, Katoto, a Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj) half-sister to dual Group 2 scorer Savvy Hallie (Hellbent), impressed with a narrow win over stablemate Rocket Girl (I Am Invincible), with Super Seth’s (Dundeel) full-sibling Titan Punch producing a strong late effort in third.

Meanwhile, Waller’s $1.7 million Snitzel colt Nations League was asked for more in his second trial of the preparation following an unplaced debut in December. He came away to score by 2.3 lengths over Maurice (Screen Hero) filly Your Colour.

Ceolwulf’s half-sister breaks through at Gosford

Lupa Capitalina (Almanzor), a half-sister to four-time Group 1 winner Ceolwulf (Tavistock), opened her account with a strong maiden victory over 1600 metres at Gosford on Thursday. Prepared by Joe Pride, who also trains her decorated sibling, the three-year-old settled off the speed before surging home to score by 0.4 lengths over Master Of War (Merchant Navy) as favourite. The daughter of Almanzor (Wootton Bassett) was having her fifth start and second run back from a spell, and shapes as a filly still on the rise. A $260,000 Inglis Premier purchase from Cambridge Stud for John Foote Bloodstock, Lupa Capitalina races for So Bloodstock and is the second winner from Las Brisas, an unraced Shamardal (Giant’s Causeway) mare from a deep European family. The pedigree continues to generate commercial appeal, with Las Brisas’ latest foal – a colt by Sword Of State (Snitzel) – topping this year’s Karaka Book 1 Sale when selling for NZ$1.1 million to Mr Sanxiong Gao and Ciaron Maher.

Xtravagant filly Shalash scores on debut

Shalash provided Newhaven Park sire Xtravagant (Pentire) with a new juvenile winner when the Adam Duggan-trained filly made a winning debut at Gosford on Thursday. Purchased for $70,000 by Salvador Bloodstock from Newhaven Park at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, the two-year-old prevailed by 1.6 lengths over Bold Bucks (Capitalist), with another 1.4 lengths going back to placegetter Beyond The Reef (Flying Artie). Shalash becomes the third winner from six to race out of Windrunner, a winning Commands (Danehill) mare who is a half-sister to Group 3 winner and sire Unencumbered (Testa Rossa) and stakes-winning mare Maharba (Pride Of Dubai).

VRC raises record funds for Good Friday Appeal

The Victoria Racing Club (VRC) has raised a record $123,540 for the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal, continuing the racing industry’s support of the long-running Victorian charity. Funds were raised through a range of initiatives across the Melbourne Cup Carnival and Flemington Autumn Carnival, with support from racegoers, members, partners and the broader racing community. As part of this year’s activities, Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winner Twilight Payment (Teofilo) and the Lexus Melbourne Cup trophy visited the Royal Children’s Hospital, giving patients and families the opportunity to engage with one of racing’s popular champions. VRC chief executive officer Kylie Rogers said the club was proud to support the appeal and contribute to the important work of the Royal Children’s Hospital. “We are incredibly proud to support the Good Friday Appeal and contribute to the important work of the Royal Children’s Hospital, which provides world-class care to children and families across Victoria,” Rogers said. The VRC has now raised more than $300,000 for the appeal since partnering with the charity in 2023.

Fast Track deadline extended

Thoroughbred Breeders Australia (TBA) has extended the application deadline for its Fast Track program to April 6, giving prospective applicants additional time to apply for the industry training initiative. The Fast Track program is designed to create a pathway for talented horse people to enter the thoroughbred breeding industry, combining full-time paid employment on a leading Australian stud farm with formal study through a Certificate III in Horse Breeding. The 12-month program offers an accelerated introduction to the breeding industry, with participants gaining hands-on experience, mentoring from industry professionals and exposure to career opportunities across the global thoroughbred sector. The initiative is aimed at people passionate about horses, regardless of their previous equine experience, and provides a structured pathway into a long-term career in the industry.

J-Mac documentary to air on various channels

Racing NSW has announced a global distribution agreement for its upcoming documentary on James McDonald, partnering with DAZN alongside domestic broadcasters Foxtel, Kayo Sports and BINGE. The documentary will premiere on Fox Sports (Foxtel channel 502) on April 14 at 7.30pm, with simultaneous streaming on Kayo and BINGE, before being rolled out internationally via DAZN’s global platform. Offering behind-the-scenes access, the production charts McDonald’s rise to the top of the sport and provides insight into the physical and mental demands faced by elite jockeys. Racing NSW chief executive Peter V’landys said the documentary would help broaden racing’s appeal. “This documentary showcases the extraordinary skill, discipline and resilience required to be a top-level jockey, while also giving audiences a deeper understanding of James McDonald as a person,” he said. Foxtel Group CEO Patrick Delany said the partnership would ensure wide reach. “As part of the DAZN family, the Foxtel Group now has the scale to take world-class storytelling like J-Mac to audiences around the world.”

Furlong holds strong hand at Riverton

Queen Of Sheba (Credit: Race Images South)

Anna Furlong will head to Riverton on Saturday with a powerful team, including a trio of runners prominent in betting across the card. Her leading chances come in the Gore Guineas (Listed, 1200m), where last-start winners Queen Of Sheba (Impending) and Champagne Diblu (Russian Revolution) will line up following the race’s transfer from its original February date. Queen Of Sheba has been consistent in four starts, breaking through at Ashburton last time, while Champagne Diblu impressed when winning a stronger 1200-metre contest at the same track in February. “In all fairness, she has only won a maiden… where he has put away a much smarter field,” Furlong said. “She’s certainly going to benefit from the good draw. We have kept Champagne Diblu fresh…hopefully the weather stays fine.” Furlong will also saddle two runners in the Francolin Stakes (1400m), headed by last-start winner Canasta (Ace High), with stablemate The Entertainer (Staphanos) dropping back in grade after recent Group assignments. “It’s a good race for Canasta and 1400 metres should suit,” she said. “I think she’s well placed… hopefully she can figure in the finish.” Promising juvenile Miss Thunderdonk (Satono Aladdin) will kick off the meeting in the Excellency Stakes (1100m) after an encouraging trial. “I think she has got a bit of a motor and if she is running in the top three I will be really happy,” Furlong said.

Tyler on the hunt this Easter

Riverton’s Easter meeting continues to grow in stature and local trainer Kelvin Tyler is aiming to keep the spoils at home with a strong team across Saturday’s feature races. The Riverton Cup (2147m), the final leg of the Southern Cups Bonus Series, headlines the card alongside the transferred Gore Guineas, attracting strong out-of-region interest. Tyler is set to saddle Vamos (Vadamos) and Prince Alby (Sacred Falls) in the Cup, while last-start winner Sight To See (Time Test) is on the ballot. “It has been a good race to us…but this field is probably the strongest it has ever been,” Tyler said. “Sight To See is flying… hopefully we can get a start.” Vamos resumes second-up but faces a wide draw, while Prince Alby has undergone gear changes in a bid to return to form. In the Gore Guineas, Tyler will rely on Better Shared (Overshare), who has improved following throat surgery. “She can breathe properly now… I’ll be disappointed if she’s not in the top three or four,” he said. Tyler will also be represented by Martell (El Roca), a three-time winner from four starts, in the Aparima Handicap (1200m), while promising juvenile Swift Thinker (Armory) opens the day in the Excellency Stakes. The stable will round out the meeting with last-start winner Ripa Time (Time Test) in the Waipango Handicap (1600m).

Shoebill’s stamina to be put to the test

Shoebill (Per Incanto) will have the chance to prove her credentials as a middle-distance prospect when she steps up in trip in Saturday’s Cambridge Stud Handicap (2200m) at Ellerslie. Trainer Andrew Forsman said the in-form daughter of Per Incanto (Street Cry) had impressed up to a mile, but the latest assignment would determine whether she could progress to stakes company. “We’re not convinced yet that she’s a staying filly, so it’s a chance for her to prove she can run a middle distance,” Forsman said. “If she runs really well, the most likely scenario would be to return to Ellerslie for the Championship Stakes.” Shoebill broke through over a mile at Tauherenikau two starts ago and backed it up with a strong second at Pukekohe last time. “She’s just getting better and better… I think the penny has now dropped,” Forsman said. Michael McNab retains the ride and will also partner stablemate Yaldi (Ardrossan), who resumes in the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Handicap (1300m). “He’s got plenty of ability, but his racing pattern means he needs luck at times,” Forsman said. Juvenile Vitalize (U S Navy Flag) will make her debut in the Pearl Series (1200m), while Autumn Queen (The Autumn Sun) backs up over the mile after a disappointing sixth last start following her maiden win. “We’ll try and ride her a bit quieter… and hopefully she hits the line better,” Forsman said of The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice) filly.

Navy Ensign seeking to go back-to-back

Navy Ensign (U S Navy Flag) will aim to make it back-to-back victories when he lines up in Saturday’s MyRacehorse 1600 (1600m) at Ellerslie for trainer Murray Thompson. The son of U S Navy Flag (War Front) broke through at his sixth start at Pukekohe last month after a string of consistent performances, having finished runner-up in his first four outings. “It was about time…it was well deserved,” Thompson said. “He has got a lot of ability, and he is only going to get better with time.” Navy Ensign has continued to please in his work since that victory and will jump from barrier one with Opie Bosson aboard. “Three would have been ideal… but he should get a nice run behind whoever leads,” Thompson said. The addition of blinkers in his past two starts has sharpened the gelding’s early speed and racing pattern. “He was a bit ho-hum before…the blinkers have certainly worked,” Thompson said. Part-owned by David Archer, whose colours were carried to Group 1 success by Belle Cheval (Savabeel) last weekend, Navy Ensign shapes as a progressive type still on the rise. Thompson said the gelding is likely to head for a spell following Saturday’s run, with a spring campaign in mind.

HK: Ka Ying Rising goes for 19th consecutive win in Sprint Cup

Ka Ying Rising (Credit: HKJC)

Zac Purton is confident champion sprinter Ka Ying Rising (Shamexpress) can continue his remarkable winning run when he lines up in Monday’s Sprint Cup (Gr 2, 1200m) at Sha Tin. The David Hayes-trained gelding heads into the race chasing a 19th-consecutive victory, having recently broken Silent Witness’ (El Moxie) long-standing record with his second win in the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Cup (Gr 1, 1400m). “I can’t see why he can’t continue to keep doing what he is doing,” Purton said. “Hopefully he handles himself on race day… if those things happen, then he does the rest.” Ka Ying Rising has won eight Group 1 races, including back-to-back Hong Kong Sprints (Gr 1, 1200m) and last year’s Everest (Gr 1, 1200m), and has remained unbeaten since February 2024. “He’s a very straightforward horse…everything is ticking over with him,” Purton said. He will jump from barrier five in a field of seven, with stablemates Storm Rider (Dracarys) and Rubylot (Rubick) also featuring on the card in the Chairman’s Trophy (Gr 2, 1600m). Purton will partner Fast Network (Wrote) in that event, stepping up to a mile for the first time this campaign. Looking ahead, Purton is set for a busy weekend, with engagements at Randwick including rides aboard Giga Kick (Scissor Kick) in the T J Smith Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) and Evaporate (Per Incanto) in the Doncaster Mile (Gr 1, 1600m).

US: Yaupon filly sets record at Texas 2YO Sale

A filly from the second crop of Spendthrift Farm stallion Yaupon (Uncle Mo) set a new benchmark at the Texas Thoroughbred Association Two-Year-Olds in Training Sale on Wednesday, selling for US$350,000 (approx AU$508,440) at Lone Star Park. Offered as Hip 59 by Danny and Sabina Pish's Texas-based 1880 Bloodstock, the filly, named Gee Money, was purchased by Gee Family Racing after working :10 2/5s at the under-tack show, the second-fastest time recorded. Out of Bodemeister (Empire Maker) mare Lilacs and Lilies, she hails from the family of Grade 1 winner Lilacs And Lace (Flower Alley), the dam of Japanese champion Lucky Lilac (Orfevre). Trade at the sale was solid, with 43 of 66 horses sold for a gross of US$1,604,500 (approx. AU$2.33 million). The average rose 30 per cent year-on-year to US$37,314 (approx. AU$54,210), while the median increased 16.7 per cent to US$21,000 (approx. AU$30,510). The RNA rate sat at 35 per cent.

Yulong double-handed in ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes

Streisand (Credit: Racing Photos)

It’s all systems go for Yulong Investments with new acquisitions Streisand (Magnus) and Paradoxium (Extreme Choice) leading the charge on Day 1 of The Championships at Randwick on Easter Saturday.

Streisand is a firming $3.30 favourite for the Inglis Sires' (Gr 1, 1400m) and Paradoxium is on the third-line of markets at $9.50 following contrasting results in the Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m).

Yulong owner Mr Yuesheng Zhang purchased Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Streisand outright earlier this week and he will race Paradoxium in partnership with Ridgmont’s Mitch Cunningham – who kept a share in the untapped colt.

Yulong chief operating officer Sam Fairgray made a case for both youngsters when previewing the star-studded meeting yesterday.

“Streisand will stay with Clinton McDonald at Cranbourne and you can’t fault her form,” Fairgray said. “She won the Blue Diamond and then finished second to Guest House in the Golden Slipper.

“Clinton is happy with the way she’s trained on and another Group 1 will only increase her residual value. Owners and trainers love yearlings from fast two year-olds and she will be a great addition to Yulong’s broodmare band down the track.”

Streisand was a $100,000 buy for McDonald and Shane McGrath at the 2025 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale and is the first Group 1 winner for Zoustar (Northern Meteor) as a broodmare sire. Her dam Zouper Star has been catalogued as Lot 25 for the Inglis Chairman’s Sale on May 7 and she is a winning half-sister to black-type gallopers Best Yet To Come (Econsul) and Simply Put (Charge Forward).

McDonald was over the moon at the Blue Diamond presentation at Caulfield.

"What a filly,” McDonald said post-race. “She did it the tough way and I thought she was really strong all the way to the line. She was the most seasoned horse in the race and the way she walked around the mounting yard it was like she's done it her whole life."

Fairgray is confident Paradoxium can make amends for a best-forgotten loss in the Golden Slipper. The Bjorn Baker-trained colt went into the race on the back of outstanding victories in the Magic Millions Wyong 2YO Classic (RL, 1100m) and Todman Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Randwick.

“He drew [barrier] 18 and was brave after travelling wide,” Baker said. “He also had a setback earlier in the season before the Magic Million Classic on the Gold Coast. He was the early favourite but had to be scratched due to travel sickness.”

Paradoxium (Credit: Sportpix)

Baker has plenty of time for Paradoxium. “For him to get back here is pretty special,” he added. “We breed for speed in Australia and he’s fast and tough.”

And a Group 1 will confirm Paradoxium joins a future Yulong stallion roster which is currently headed by champion sire Written Tycoon (Iglesia).

“He’s a precocious Extreme Choice and his sons at stud like Stay Inside are proving it’s already a successful sireline,” Fairgray said. “And we saw how popular his sons were at the Easter Yearling Sale.”

The top-priced Extreme Choice colt at Riverside Stables was the son of Melbourne Group 2 winner Pretty Brazen (Brazen Beau) that was knocked down for $3 million. Overall, they averaged an incredible $1.56 million.

Mr Zhang went back to the source when buying his Zoustar half-brother at last week’s Inglis Easter Yearling Sale. Their stakes-placed dam Paredo (Better Than Ready) is a half-sister to the dam of Group 1 colt Don Corleone – who is also by Extreme Choice.

Another close relation Private Harry (Harry Angel) added an elite-level victory to the page winning last year’s The Galaxy (Gr 1, 1100m) for a Yulong partnership and Chris Waller has him winding up for a late-season campaign after placing in a Warwick Farm barrier trial on Monday.

It's In The Blood: Paradoxium

Of the many reasons to send a mare to Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt), one in particular received another huge boost on the weekend when Paradoxium (Extreme Choice) won the Todman Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m).

Apart from Paradoxium’s half-brother, Yulong also bought into another high-priced Zoustar at Riverside Stables when targeting the colt from Let’s Elope Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) winner Sword Of Light (New Approach). He’s a half-brother to Darby Munro Stakes (Listed, 1200m) winner Beskar (Snitzel) and will be trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott.

Yulong goes into The Championships with its green and white checked colours capable of starting the day on a positive note with Under Focus (Too Darn Hot) in the Kindergarten Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m).

Trained by Kris Lees, he tracked the speed to win a Randwick nursery last time out and there’s further upside leading into his first crack at black-type.

“He looks a progressive colt and Kris reckons he’s improved again,” Fairgray said. “He’s honest and went forward last time and he can run through the line on Saturday.”

Meanwhile, Yulong has announced Group 1 winner Vinrock (I Am Invincible) will join its quality roster in 2026 headed by Written Tycoon alongside Group 1 sires Alabama Express (Redoute’s Choice) and Grunt (O’Reilly).

Vinrock (Credit: Sportpix)

This time last year he became the first Australian two-year-old Group 1 winner by I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) in the ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes at Randwick.

“Vinrock possessed all the ingredients breeders seek in a young stallion,” Fairgray said. “He’s an exceptional colt. Elite performances at two, an outstanding page, and a real physical presence.

“To win both the VRC and ATC Sires’ Produce races in the same season is so rare and speaks volumes about his class, toughness, and natural ability. He’s a son of I Am Invincible from a high-quality Redoute’s Choice mare like Zoustar, Anamoe and Super Seth.

“That gives him a pedigree that will really resonate with breeders, and we’re excited to welcome him to the farm.”

Vinrock will stand for an introductory fee of $22,000 (inc GST).

Tony Cruz reaches 1,600 Hong Kong wins as trainer; Nichola Yuen scores at debut meeting

Leo Schlink

HKJC

x iconfacebook iconlink icon

Tony Cruz (Credit: HKJC)

In a meeting of historic generational achievement, Tony Cruz became only the third trainer to saddle 1,600 wins in Hong Kong and apprentice Nichola Yuen completed a dream introduction into the jurisdiction with her first victory at Sha Tin’s all-dirt meeting on Wednesday night.

Cruz, 69, joined John Moore (1,735 wins) and John Size (1,645) as the only trainers to prepare 1,600 wins or more after teaming with Britney Wong to win the third section of the Class 4 Ma Tau Wai Handicap (1200m) with Igor Stravinsky (No Nay Never), marking the first time two homegrown female apprentices have ridden winners on the same card in Hong Kong since the turn of the century.

Already one of the most decorated figures in Hong Kong racing with six jockey championships and 946 wins in the saddle, Cruz is also a dual Hong Kong Champion Trainer (1999/00 & 2004/05) and was elated to reach the 1,600-victory milestone.

“The Jockey Club has given me the opportunity to be a trainer for such a long time and eventually I've reached this mark - I have to thank the Jockey Club for that. I just wish I can keep on going and win more races - that's what the game is about: winning races, and that's my job,” Cruz said.

“I'm the longest-standing jockey and trainer in Hong Kong, I'm talking about 55-56 years. The Jockey Club has given me the opportunity, and I've gone and broken some records.

“I knew the horse could handle the dirt but with the drop in class, I needed a claimer to ride him because he can't win with 135 pounds. With seven pounds off, Britney is the one who could make it happen.

“I believe she's like Hollie Doyle, she's got strength and power. She's very forceful in a finish and she can ride hard - the horse needs this kind of jockey.”

Among The Hong Kong Jockey Club’s first intake into the Apprentice Jockeys’ School in 1972, Cruz started the meeting on 1,598 winners as a trainer and first struck when Viva Chaleur (Wootton Bassett) broke through at his 36th Hong Kong start to win the Class 5 Shek Kip Mei Handicap (1200m) under Andrea Atzeni.

Nichola Yuen (Credit: HKJC)

Formerly known as Trident when trained by Andre Fabre in France, the Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj) gelding was runner-up in the 2021 Prix Morny (Gr 1, 1200m) as a two-year-old. Dogged by throat and ligament issues since arriving in Hong Kong on a rating of 82, the seven-year-old scored tonight on a mark of 22.

Yuen took only two rides to open her winning account in Hong Kong with a brilliant tactical ride on Dennis Yip’s PI Legend (I Am Invincible) in the second section of Class 4 Ma Tau Wai Handicap (1200m).

Adding to the 77 wins she accrued overseas - 61 in Australia, ten in New Zealand and seven in South Africa – as part of her training for riding in Hong Kong, Yuen allowed PI Legend to balance from barrier 12 before taking a lead he would never relinquish, clocking 1m 08.68s.

“It’s very unbelievable. I’m really grateful to have the opportunity from Mr Yip and being able to ride comfortably and confidently,” Yuen, 25, said of the victory. “I'm very excited. I can't believe that at my first meeting here in Hong Kong, I’ve got a win straight away.

“I’m very happy to have the opportunities - and for Mr Yip, of course. Thank you so much to The Hong Kong Jockey Club Apprentice School, Miss Amy Chan and Mr Felix Coetzee - they’ve really taught me a lot and I’m very grateful.

“I did a lot of homework, and I have lots of experience overseas, so I think I learned a lot there. It's really helpful for me to step on this bigger stage, it's good for me as well.”

Having finished fourth on Double Bingo (Charm Spirit) behind Viva Chaleur in her debut ride in the opening race on the card, the Class 5 Shek Kip Mei Handicap (1200m), Yuen was undeterred by PI Legend’s wide draw three races later.

PI Legend (Credit: HKJC)

“It was a tricky gate today and my horse [PI Legend] is an on-pace horse, but I could see that there were two on-pace horses on my inside, so I actually had to watch them as well,” she said.

“But the horse gave me a very good feeling after the jump. He gave me a very good momentum to kind of just slide in front and just keep on pushing. So, the horse helped me and helped himself as well. We both saved our energy by getting to the front and getting a nice tempo and he got his breather so he could give a very nice kick in the end.”

Triumphant by a length and a quarter over Speedy Smartie (Satono Aladdin) and Flowing Riches (Denman), Yuen glanced at the infield screen for confirmation of the win as PI Legend surged clear.

“I looked at the screen, and I was pretty sure I had won the race. I've been waiting for this for quite a while, so it's been very emotional,” she said.

Yip said: “Last time he [PI Legend] ran well in a Class 3, but it was a very strong race and probably Class 2 standard, so dropping in grade with Nichola's ten-pound claim, I hoped it would be easy. She followed all my instructions perfectly - she'll be a good jockey in time.”

Wong, who was injured in a barrier mishap in November, said: “Obviously, I came back from injury and it’s good to get the ball rolling after a big break. I’m very grateful to have my first ride for Tony and I’m very happy to get my first winner for him.

“It’s a very memorable day for me and hopefully we can get back to a strong run again.”

Yip sealed a double when Natural High (Power) powered home late to clinch the first section of the Class 4 Ma Tau Wai Handicap (1200m) to extend Jerry Chau’s lead over Vincent Ho to seven wins – 34 to 27 - in the battle for the Tony Cruz Award as leading homegrown jockey.

Hailtothevictors (Almanzor) finished powerfully under Luke Ferraris to land the Class 5 Yue Wan Handicap (1650m) for David Eustace, before Michael Chang’s Leslie (Shooting To Win) stormed from the rear of the field under Richard Kingscote to win the Class 4 Nam Shan Handicap (1650m).

Zac Purton combined with Ricky Yiu’s Victory Sky (U S Navy Flag) to win the Class 3 Choi Hung Handicap (1200m) before Eustace and Kingscote notched doubles with Loch Tay’s (Bated Breath) narrow success in the Class 3 Choi Wan Handicap (1650m).

Hong Kong racing continues on Easter Monday with the Sprint Cup (Gr 2, 1200m) and the Chairman’s Trophy (Gr 2, 1600m).

Won: Hyland Race Colours Maiden Handicap, 1300m, April 1, Warwick Farm

Seraphox (Harry Angel) showed the benefit of race experience at Warwick Farm on Wednesday, shedding his maiden tag in good style under James McDonald for trainer Ciaron Maher.

The son of Darley’s underrated sire Harry Angel (Dark Angel) was far from disgraced on debut in the Todman Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) when seventh, beaten only 4.1 lengths by the more experienced winner Paradoxium (Extreme Choice) after covering ground throughout.

The flashy chestnut duly franked that effort with a professional display back in maiden grade.

Settling just off the speed, Seraphox was briefly held up on straightening before sprinting through to hold off the late challenge of The Roaring Sun (The Autumn Sun) and score by 0.4 lengths, with Rolling Home (Bivouac) finishing third, another 2.2 lengths adrift.

Stable representative Amy Burke said the colt had taken natural improvement from his first outing.

“He's a lovely horse and they’ve had a bit of an opinion of him from the beginning,” Burke said.

“His run in the Todman was far from disgraced… he got caught wide and still stuck on well. He has really come on from that run, even in his demeanour… he’s the ultimate professional and a very nice horse going forward.”

McDonald echoed that sentiment, suggesting the colt would improve further with time. “He's a nice progressive horse who will only excel as he gets further,” he said.

A $220,000 Inglis Ready2Race purchase for Ciaron Maher and Starblue Consultancy out of Baystone Farm, Seraphox has been through the sales ring multiple times, having first sold as a weanling for $65,000 before making $90,000 as a yearling.

Bred by Miss M Jeffcoat, he is the first foal out of Foxwedge (Fastnet Rock) mare Foxy Touch and hails from the family of Group 2 winner and Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) fourth Campione D’Italia (Snitzel), who is set to contest Saturday’s Inglis Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Randwick.
