Joliestar stole the Zoustar (Northern Meteor) headlines when winning the T J Smith Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) on Saturday but racegoers left Randwick with another ringing Zoustar endorsement courtesy of his unbeaten filly Plaintiff.

Plaintiff signed off Day 1 of The Championships with a last-to-first victory in the P J Bell Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m), defeating Nepo Baby (Lucky Vega) and Tomato Toastie (Too Darn Hot). She jumped from an outside gate and went via the cape on the corner for Jordan Childs to score by a half-length.

What's On

“That’s four-from-four and now she’s a black-type winner,” trainer Peter Snowden said. “It didn’t surprise me, she’s always shown a fair bit of ability and her work has been great. The good ones always run well, no matter the conditions or what barrier they draw, they always run well and she did that today.

“She’s only lightly raced and is still untapped with plenty of potential. And I’m so glad for Jordan, he gave up a full book of rides to come up here and ride her.”

On Tuesday morning, assistant trainer Aaron Lau reported she had pulled up extra well ahead of her next assignment in the James H B Carr Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) at Randwick on Saturday week, April 18.

“The race worked out well and she really delivered,” Childs said. “I wanted to be closer in the run but she just stepped a little bit slow with the blinkers on for the first time. I had to go to Plan B and she travelled up nicely in the running line and, once I let her go, she showed a great turn of foot.

“She was first-up today and just peaked on her run the last little bit. She will take plenty of improvement from the outing and it’s great to get a winner for Peter Snowden and John Camilleri who has been a great supporter of mine.”

Fairway Thoroughbreds’ John Camilleri is overseas and missed Saturday’s celebrations but is no stranger to creating headlines having bred superstar mare Winx (Street Cry). He paid $2.2 million for Plaintiff on the opening day of the 2024 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale, which made her the most expensive yearling sold that year in the southern hemisphere.

That mark only lasted 24 hours however, with the Winx filly by Pierro (Lonhro) selling to Debbie Kepitis for a world-record $10 million on day two.

Widden Stud stands Zoustar and sold Plaintiff to agent James Harron acting on behalf of Camilleri and his wife Deb.

Zoustar is absolutely flying and his fillies are doing an outstanding job as well. She is a great type, obviously a beautiful filly, lovely quality, fantastic depth to her and a really lovely action, just a very special filly

James Harron

“She’s very, very special and was a standout for us,” Harron declared. “It was obvious we would have to push very hard for her so we did.

“Zoustar is absolutely flying and his fillies are doing an outstanding job as well. She is a great type, obviously a beautiful filly, lovely quality, fantastic depth to her and a really lovely action, just a very special filly.

“The family has been bred up really nicely and it’s one of those pages that you might look back on in ten years and see it’s thickened right out from what is a really tough, high-end race mare.”

Widden owner Antony Thompson bred Plaintiff in partnership and recalled there were numerous good judges on her at Riverside Stables.

“She’s a gorgeous filly and one you would really stretch for,” he said. “We always had really high expectations and you never really know but to see her sell the way she has is unbelievable.

“She presented so well all week and everybody who saw her loved her, and you saw that around the ring with four or five serious teams playing well above the $1 million mark.

Plaintiff is the final foal from Prompt Response (Beneteau), who won at Group 1 level in the 2018 Tatts Tiara (1400m) at Doomben for Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott. That came on the back of earlier black-type victories in the Twilight Glow Stakes (Listed, 1400m) in Melbourne, Dane Ripper Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) in Brisbane and ATC Breeders’ Classic (Gr 2, 1200m) and Emancipation Stakes (Gr 2, 1500m) in Sydney.

Her older full-brother Prompt Return won a VRC Maribyrnong Plate (Gr 3, 1000m) and there’s black-type right down the page to NZ-bred third-dam Amnesia (Desert Sun) who was Group 2 placed.

Zoustar (Credit: Widden Stud)

Plaintiff is the 78th black-type winner by Zoustar and minutes later Zoupurring notched No.79 in the Railway Stakes (LR, 1100m) at Oakbank. The latter sold for $100,000 at the 2021 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale to Bennett Racing out of the consignment from Rosemont Stud.

Zoustaris Australia’s reigning champion sire and Saturday’s treble has him second to Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) on the premiership table for 2025-26. He retired to Widden Stud following Group 1 triumphs in the Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) and Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) and was an immediate stud success generating year-on-year fee increases from $44,000 to $275,000 (inc GST) in 2025.

Thompson is a seventh-generation member of a family that has stood champion sires like Vain (Wilkes), Bletchingly (Biscay) and Marscay (Biscay) at the historic Hunter Valley stud.

“It’s incredibly hard thing to have a champion stallion,” Thompson said after Zoustar won it last year.

“We obviously have a great history with standing some of the greatest Australian sires but it was 35 years between Marscay and Zoustar. It was a huge achievement and we’re obviously proud of everything Zoustar has achieved.

“We took a big position with him and have always had enormous belief so it’s very satisfying to see him doing what he’s doing. It’s phenomenal.”

Dubai Honour to wear first-time blinkers for Randwick tilt

Dubai Honour (Credit: Sportpix)

Dubai Honour (Pride Of Dubai) will sport blinkers for the first time as trainer William Haggas looks to enhance the globetrotter’s chances in Saturday’s Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at Randwick. The eight-year-old, a four-time Group 1 winner, will wear the gear change at start 37, with travelling foreman Issy Paul hopeful it can sharpen the seasoned campaigner. “Hopefully they’ll sharpen him up,” Paul told Racing NSW. “We did it with Addeybb in his second Queen Elizabeth and that worked well. He’s bounced out of his last run and we’re happy with him, so we’ll give it a good crack.” Dubai Honour, who won the race in 2023 and was runner-up last year, again follows the Tancred Stakes (Gr 1, 2400m) lead-in, having finished second after a bold on-pace display. He faces a strong field headed by unbeaten mare Autumn Glow (The Autumn Sun), with Paul acknowledging the challenge but confident in the gelding’s consistency. “He rarely runs a bad race and we’ve got him in a really good place,” she said. Stablemate Caviar Heights (Sea The Stars) is also engaged, with the pair expected to ensure a genuine tempo. Dubai Honour is rated an $11 chance, with Tom Marquand to ride.

Campaldino faces fitness test ahead of Sydney Cup

Campaldino (Ghibellines) will need to satisfy veterinary requirements before taking his place in the Sydney Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) at Randwick on Saturday after an irregularity was detected in routine testing. The Tulloch Lodge stayer, trained by Adrian Bott and Gai Waterhouse, returned a finding of cardiac arrhythmia during veterinary inspections conducted on Tuesday. Bott said the issue came as a surprise, with the gelding showing no signs of concern following his runner-up performance in the Chairman’s Handicap (Gr 2, 2600m) last weekend. “He presented with cardiac arrhythmia in testing this morning,” Bott said. “He was examined after the race and everything was normal, so it’s a bit unusual. He’s had no history of it and hasn’t done anything strenuous since.” Campaldino has undergone further testing, including blood analysis, and will be required to complete a monitored gallop before stewards later this week to be cleared to race. Connections say the horse’s welfare remains the priority, with a start in the Sydney Cup dependent on him being fully sound. “If he’s right, we know he’ll be competitive,” Bott said. “He’s proven at the trip and has followed a preparation that has worked well for us previously.” Campaldino has drawn barrier 14 with Tim Clark booked to ride.

Pride Of Jenni set for mares’ target at Randwick

Pride Of Jenni (Credit: Racing Photos)

Pride Of Jenni (Pride Of Dubai) will be kept to mares’ company at Randwick on Saturday, with connections electing to run in the Queen Of The Turf Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) rather than the open-age Queen Elizabeth Stakes. The decision follows dual nominations for both features, with the mare paid up for the 1600-metre contest on Tuesday morning, where she is set to clash with fellow elite-level winners including Lady Shenandoah (Snitzel) and Treasurethe Moment (Alabama Express). Pride Of Jenni has been competitive in top company this preparation, finishing third in the All-Star Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) first-up before a narrow defeat when runner-up in the Australian Cup (Gr 1, 2000m). Connections have opted against attempting a second tilt at the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, which she famously won last year after establishing a commanding mid-race margin, instead favouring a slightly easier assignment restricted to mares.

Tempted primed for Arrowfield return

Tempted (Credit: Sportpix)

Tempted (Street Boss) will return to her own age group in Saturday’s Arrowfield Sprint (Gr 2, 1200m) at Randwick, with jockey Chad Schofield confident the filly can continue her winning run. The Ciaron Maher-trained three-year-old secured her Group 1 breakthrough in the Surround Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) earlier this preparation and has since been freshened following a recent trial. “She’s had a nice little break and feels like she’s come back really well,” Schofield told Racing NSW. “It’s a perfect race for her back to 1200 metres against her own age.” Tempted has shown a sharp turn of foot at the distance, highlighted by victories in the Run To The Rose (Gr 2, 1200m), Reisling Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m), and Percy Sykes Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) and Schofield believes her adaptability is a key asset. “She’s bombproof to ride, she puts herself wherever you want and then finds lengths when you need her,” he said. “That’s what good horses do.” The filly, a dominant market elect, is expected to be closely watched but Schofield remains confident. “They’ll be trying to beat us, but I’ve got full confidence in her,” he said. Schofield will also partner Screen Icon (Nicconi) in the Percy Sykes Stakes, with the filly set to benefit from an improved draw. “She’s underrated and hasn’t had much luck with barriers,” he said. “If she gets the right run, she’ll be right in it.” Among his other rides is Regal Award (Ole Kirk) in the South Pacific Classic (Listed, 1400m), a horse Schofield believes has the ability if he can put it all together.

Salann set for Randwick test

Trainer Ben Brisbourne will look to build on his recent Group success when promising filly Salann (Shamus Award) heads to Fernhill Mile (Listed, 1600m) at Randwick on Saturday. The Wangaratta-based horseman has flagged a potential start in the Champagne Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) should the daughter of Shamus Award (Snitzel) perform to expectations. Salann made an encouraging debut when finishing second in the Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m), closing strongly behind Satono Glow (Satono Aladdin), and Brisbourne believes the step up to a mile will suit. “She got home super on debut and has trained on well,” Brisbourne said. “We felt 1200 metres was on the sharp side and she’d appreciate getting over more ground.” A recent piece of work has further boosted confidence, with the filly finishing off strongly over 1000 metres and showing sustained strength through the line. Initially considered a sharper juvenile, Salann has continued to suggest she will be better suited over longer trips as her preparation has progressed. "We always thought she was a jump-and-run two-year-old and she was sort of our sharper type," Brisbourne said. "But the more we've been getting through the jump outs and the trials, the more the feedback was she'd be a lovely 1,400-metre horse and beyond." Brisbourne could have multiple runners in the Champagne Stakes, with stablemate Grinzinger Heart (Toronado) also on that path following her victory in the VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m). Salann is an $8 chance in early markets for the Fernhill Mile, with Tyler Schiller booked to ride.

Merrigold aiming for Listed honours at Caulfield

Merrigold (Credit: Racing Photos)

Trainer John Sadler is set to chase valuable black type with Merrigold (Gold Standard) in Saturday’s Anniversary Vase (L, 1600m) at Caulfield. The mare heads to the race off the back of a strong Benchmark 84 victory over 1400 metres at the same venue last weekend, with Sadler confident she can handle the quick turnaround. “She backs up very well,” Sadler said. “She came through the run in great order and I’ve got no issue running her again.” Connections have identified the race as a key opportunity to secure black type this preparation, with Merrigold having been a consistent performer in recent months, recording two wins and three placings from five starts this year. Her only previous attempt at stakes level resulted in an unplaced finish in the How Now Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) last spring, but Sadler believes she has continued to improve. “The aim this prep has been to try and get that black type,” he said. “It won’t be an easy race, but she’s earned her chance.” Sadler added the mare’s recovery between runs has been a key factor in backing her up. “She thrives on her racing and bounces through it,” he said. Merrigold has been allotted 54 kilograms for the Anniversary Vass.

Charm Stone on trial for Royal Ascot

I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) mare Charm Stone will board a flight to Royal Ascot for the Queen Elizabeth Jubilee Stakes (Gr 1, 6f) in June if all goes to plan in Adelaide later this month. Co-trainer Mick Price told Racing.com the overseas raid depends on the outcome of the Robert Sangster Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Morphettville on April 26. “At this stage, she will be going,” Price, who trains in partnership with Michael Kent Jnr, said. “I had a meeting with the owners and we’ve got the feasibility pretty much down pat. We’ve got time for the vaccinations and she will stay with Charlie Fellowes at Newmarket.” Price said if Charm Stone does take her place in the field, star jockey Damian Lane will head across from Japan to ride the mare. He has ridden the two-time Group 1 winner to victories in Ottawa Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m) at Flemington and Quezette Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) at Caulfield. Price understands the enormity of the task ahead, not only to get there in one piece, but to then also perform. “Joliestar’s there and she’s won five Group 1 races and we’ve won two. But it is a horse race and you never know, do you?” he said. A large Australasian contingent will descend on Royal Ascot led by Asfoora (Flying Artie) who is already in the UK ahead of a tilt at a third-straight campaign. Lady Of Camelot (Written Tycoon) and Overpass (Vancouver) are also in the mix to race at the famed meeting.

Magic Time set for likely farewell in All Aged Stakes

Magic Time (Credit: Racing Photos)

Magic Time (Hellbent) could be set for a final racetrack appearance in the All Aged Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Randwick later this month before heading to the breeding barn. The Yulong-owned mare finished seventh in Saturday’s T J Smith Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) after suffering interference at the start, with connections now leaning towards one final run. “She’s going to the All Aged for what might be her last start,” racing manager Rohan Hughes told Racing.com. “She’s been an incredible mare for us over a long period of time. She’s already won the race and if we get suitable ground, she’s going as well as ever. Hopefully she can finish on a high.” Prepared by Grahame Begg, Magic Time claimed the All Aged Stakes in 2024 and has built an outstanding record, with the majority of her eight career wins coming at black type level. Bred by John Muir, the six-year-old was retained after being passed in as a yearling and was later acquired by Yulong via private sale in 2024. A multiple Group 1 performer, Magic Time has earned more than $4.5 million across her career and is set to commence broodmare duties following her racetrack retirement.

Littlefield confirmed for 2026 Magnolia Cup

Australian trainer Charlotte Littlefield has been announced as the first rider for the 2026 Magnolia Cup (5.5f), to be held during the Qatar Goodwood Festival at Goodwood Racecourse on July 30. Littlefield, who trains out of Cranbourne, has already commenced preparations for the all-female charity race, which has become a feature of the festival’s Ladies Day. Originally from Midhurst, near Goodwood, Littlefield began her equestrian career in eventing before relocating to Australia in 2005, where she transitioned into racing and later secured her trainer’s licence. She established Hayfields Racing in 2015 alongside Julian Hay, with the stable progressing to achieve stakes success and continued growth in recent seasons. “It’s a pinch-me moment to return and compete at such a prestigious event,” Littlefield said. “Goodwood was my local track growing up, so it feels incredibly special to come back in this capacity.” Alongside her training role, Littlefield is also a familiar face in racing media through her work with Channel 7 and Racing.com. The Magnolia Cup sees 12 female riders from a range of industries compete after undergoing extensive preparation, with the race raising more than £3.5 million for charitable causes since its inception.

Racing NSW and ATC announce short-term funding agreement

The boards of Racing NSW and the Australian Turf Club (ATC) have reached agreements on the following points. That Racing NSW will make discretionary payments to the ATC to top up the TAB distribution until such time that the Court of Appeal decision regarding Racing NSW’s powers to appoint an administrator is handed down. That the ATC will appoint Morgan Kelly of Ernst and Young to undertake a review and provide advice to the ATC with respect to its hospitality operations, and that this agreement between the parties assists the ATC’s cash flow and financial position by ensuring that the previous discretionary funding from Racing NSW is continued. The appointment of Morgan Kelly from Ernst and Young provides valuable expertise to support the ATC in its hospitality operations going forward.

Equine Pathways Australia launches inaugural Canberra race day

Equine Pathways Australia (EPA) has announced plans for its inaugural race day, to be held at Thoroughbred Park on April 17, as the organisation looks to expand awareness and support for para-equestrian sport ahead of the Brisbane 2032 Paralympic Games. The event will feature keynote speaker Rachel Griffiths, whose career spans film and television, including an Academy Award nomination for Hilary and Jackie and a Golden Globe for Six Feet Under. Griffiths also directed Ride Like A Girl, chronicling Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m)-winning jockey Michelle Payne. Founded in 2019, Equine Pathways Australia has supported more than 400 participants with disability through its national clinic program, ranging from entry-level riders to aspiring international para-equestrians. The Canberra race day is intended as the first in a series of annual events across Australia, delivered in partnership with Paralympics Australia. The initiative aims to grow participation, enhance high-performance pathways and reduce barriers to para sport through improved access to resources, training and classification systems. Funds raised will support athlete development, equipment access and competition opportunities, while also promoting broader community engagement and inclusion. Equine Pathways Australia said the event presents an opportunity for the racing industry to play a meaningful role in supporting para athletes and strengthening pathways towards Brisbane 2032. Anyone wanting to support EPA by attending the lunch, tickets are available through the Thoroughbred Park website.

Prohibited substance detected in Harmonett sample

Racing Victoria stewards have confirmed a prohibited substance has been detected in a sample taken from Harmonett, trained by Vincent Hall. The finding relates to a post-race urine sample collected after the mare’s victory in a Benchmark 52 (1000m) at Sandown on January 21. Testing conducted by Racing Analytical Services Limited identified the presence of fexofenadine, a substance prohibited under the Australian Rules of Racing. The result was subsequently confirmed by the Australian Racing Forensic Laboratory through analysis of the reserve sample. Fexofenadine is an antihistamine commonly used in humans to treat allergic conditions including hay fever and hives, and is not registered for use in horses. Stewards notified Hall of the initial irregularity in late February and have since advised him of the confirmatory result. Investigations into the matter remain ongoing.

Tyler eyes further northern targets after Riverton haul

Freddie Time (Credit: Race Images)

Trainer Kelvin Tyler is set to head north again following a standout five-win return across Riverton’s Easter meeting. The Southland horseman enjoyed a dominant few days, highlighted by stakes success with Better Shared (Overshare) in the Gore Guineas (Listed, 1200m), with the filly also adding a second victory later in the week. Tyler also struck with stable stalwarts Prince Alby (Sacred Falls) and Go Lotte (Telperion), both continuing their consistent form with further wins. “They’re both such honest horses,” Tyler said. “It’s not easy to win that many races and we’ve had a lot of fun with them.” Attention now turns to northern targets, with Freddie Time (Time Test) set to contest the Hawke’s Bay Cup (Listed, 2200m). “He’s had a fantastic season and is working as well as ever,” Tyler said. Tyler indicated additional northern opportunities could be explored for members of the team as the stable looks to build on its recent momentum.

Road To Paris spelled after Derby effort

Road To Paris (Circus Maximus) has returned to New Zealand in good order following his seventh placing in the Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) at Randwick and will now head for a well-earned break. Prepared by Roger James and Robert Wellwood, the colt was unable to reproduce his best in testing conditions, with heavy rain impacting the Randwick surface. “He has come through the run extremely well,” James said. “The weather on raceday was a lot worse than it appeared on television. They had significant rain after scratching time and again during the meeting. Zac said he was all at sea in the ground, which was a shame.” Despite the result, the colt has performed consistently through the season, highlighted by his victory in the New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m), and connections remain confident he will continue to develop with time. Road To Paris returned home on Tuesday and will now be spelled ahead of his next preparation.

Australian targets for She’s A Dealer and Sweynesday

She’s A Dealer (Credit: Race Images)

Roger James and Robert Wellwood are set to return to Australia later this month with She’s A Dealer (Ace High), who is being aimed at the Japan Racing Association Plate (Gr 3, 2000m). The mare is coming off a win in the New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) and connections are keen to capitalise on her form by targeting Australian black type. “She is looking for 2000 metres now and the opportunity to gain Australian Black Type is important for her,” James said. Stablemate Sweynesday (Sweynesse) is also being prepared for a Queensland campaign, with the Takeover Target Stakes (Listed, 1200m) likely to serve as a lead-up to the Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m). “I think the Stradbroke is an ideal race for him,” James said. “He looks set to get in with a light weight and the 1400 metres should suit.” Meanwhile, promising filly Solid Gold (Savabeel) will attempt to add black type in the Championship Stakes (Gr 3, 2100m), with a Queensland campaign to be considered if she measures up. James also reported two-year-old Spellbound (Per Incanto) had impressed in a recent trial, with the lightly raced colt shaping as a potential Guineas-type prospect for the spring.

HK: Moreira reunites with Fownes for Happy Valley return

Caspar Fownes will renew his association with Joao Moreira at Happy Valley on Wednesday night, with the star jockey set to take all nine rides for the stable. The four-time Hong Kong champion jockey returns to the yard as Fownes looks to bolster his position in this season’s trainers’ premiership, where he currently sits second. “It’s good to have him back,” Fownes said. “He’s got a big following here and it’s great to have him riding for us. Hopefully we can pick up a winner.” Moreira, who has ridden more than 1,200 winners in Hong Kong, enjoyed a dominant stint in the jurisdiction after arriving in 2013, securing three consecutive premierships and developing a high-profile rivalry with Zac Purton. He will partner a full book including Perfect General (Zoustar) and Mighty Commander (Artie Schiller), both of whom Fownes expects to perform well after recent trials. “I think they’ll be competitive,” he said. “They’ve had a nice lead-in and are ready to go.” Fownes said consistency would be key in the closing stages of the season. “There’s a long way to go, I’ve been there before and I know what it takes,” he said. “It’ll come down to a bit of luck, good rides and handicaps.”
