Waikato Stud’s Chittick family have been breeding, rearing and developing elite racehorses at its Matamata property since the 1990s with a cavalcade of outstanding stallions going back to champion sire Centaine (Century).

Multiple champion NZ sires O’Reilly (Last Tycoon) and Pins (Snippets) followed and Waikato Stud’s current roster loses nothing on that score with ten-time champion sire Savabeel (Zabeel) continuing the world-renowned Sir Tristram (Sir Ivor) – Zabeel sireline in 2026.

What's On

General manager Mike Rennie released this year’s roster and service fees on Wednesday offering breeders proven performance, emerging momentum and genuine depth across the board through Savabeel, his sire son Noverre, Ardrossan (Redoute’s Choice), Ocean Park (Thorn Park), Banquo (Written Tycoon) and the exciting Group 1-winning recruit Return To Conquer (Snitzel).

“We are incredibly proud of the line-up and one we are proud to show clients,” Rennie said.   “It also reflects the long-term thinking and tradition that has played such a big part in our success. We know how hard it is to make a stallion and, even more so these days, to acquire one.

“This year has been a big one for Waikato Stud and our partners with Coolmore purchasing Super Seth and three generations of the Chittick family investing in Return To Conquer. At the end of the day though, we can’t do it without the support of our fellow breeders and current shareholders.”

Savabeel was inducted into the New Zealand Racing Hall of Fame in 2025. He has made an extraordinary contribution to the Australasian industry and this year, his book will be private, with Waikato Stud and his loyal shareholders the only breeders with access to the breed-shaping influence.

“What more can you say about a stallion who has achieved so much?” Rennie continued.  “Sav still enjoys his work and he looks great. While he’s set at private, on the track he’s certainly not done yet.

“Belle Cheval was incredibly impressive in the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes and his 158th stakes winner arrived on Saturday when Essentric Nature was successful in the Old Comrade Stakes in Perth.

“He’s closing in on Zabeel’s record of 166 stakes winners and we’re confident he will get there. And that will be another major milestone to tick off for Sav.”

Mike Rennie

Rennie has been based at Waikato Stud since 2018 and he played an integral role in the successful career of Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Super Seth (Dundeel) alongside the Chittick family and the WS team. Now they will help lay the foundations for the career of another exciting addition to Waikato Stud’s stallion roster in Return To Conquer.

In an unbeaten four-race career, the son of Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) scored at stakes level only, landing the Counties Challenge Stakes (Listed, 1100m), Colin Jillings 2YO Classic (Gr 3, 1200m), Matamata Slipper (Gr 3, 1200m), and Sistema Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) – recouping over $530,000 of his $1.3 million purchase price in the process.

“Return To Conquer is an incredible horse to look at and many will remember him from the Magic Millions being a AU$1.3 million yearling. He’s an unbeaten Group 1-winning son of Snitzel who we know is working well with NZ broodmares,” Rennie said.

“All four of his starts were at stakes level and he will get a lot of mares from the Waikato broodmare band as well as shareholders. He’s phenomenal value when you consider his breeding, looks and what he did on the racetrack.”

Return To Conquer will stand for $15,000 (plus GST).

Ardrossan, the Group-winning son of Redoute’s Choice (Danehill), looks poised to soar after his biggest yearling crop to date sold to $450,000 at the majors in 2026. He had 17 yearlings make six figures while 60 per cent of his NZB Karaka draft was secured by international buyers.

Among those to invest in Ardrossan yearlings were Bjorn Baker, Ciaron Maher, Cliff Brown, Matt Laurie, Sheamus Mills and Shailer Racing while loyal local supporters included Wexford Stables and Ready To Run vendor Ohukia Lodge.

“Ardrossan is going to kick some serious goals in the coming seasons. What he’s been able to achieve so far has been from mainly lower profile mares,” Rennie said.

“The last three seasons that quality has increased a significant amount and we saw that in the sales ring this year.

“They’re tough and Hong Kong loves them with eight winners from 12 runners. The Ready To Run consigners honed in on them at the yearling sales this year. It was trainers versus trade buyers bidding against each other most of the time.”

Ardrossan has already produced two stakes performers from his current juvenile crop in De Armas and Butler Cabin and he will stand this season for $20,000 (plus GST).

Ocean Park has had a watershed season producing 78 individual winners for ten stakes performers including two Group 1 horses. A five-time Group 1 winner in Australia and New Zealand, his racing career was underpinned by consistency and his stud career has produced 379 winners of 1038 races across distances from 1200 metres to 3200 metres. He has sired five individual Group 1 winners with 26 black-type winners overall.

Ocean Park (Credit: Waikato Stud)

“He always gets a good, tough horse and a great example this season is Ohope Wins,” Rennie said. “So is Autumn Glory who was placed in the Group 1 NZ Derby and Group 1 NZ Oaks. They’re good trainers’ horses because they enjoy their work, they’re tough and they train on.

“Look at Kovalica. He’s rising seven and is still contesting black-type races. He’s amassed AU$4.4 million for Chris Waller who bought two of his five yearlings at Karaka along with John O’Shea and Ballymore Racing.”

Ocean Park was renowned for his remarkable toughness and enduring soundness; qualities which have been passed to his progeny. He will stand for $15,000 (plus GST).

Noverre is the sire of first-crop autumn two-year-olds but Waikato Stud believes we will start to see his progeny make a mark as three-year-olds. At the 2026 yearling sales, trainers continued to have confidence in him with Peter Moody going to $200,000 while other trainers included Lindsay Park, Grahame Begg and Wexford.

“Trainers are reporting they’re straightforward and will benefit from a bit of time so it was good to see them securing the Noverre yearlings again at Karaka earlier this year,” Rennie added.

Noverre will stand for $10,000 (plus GST) this season.

Banquo is a stallion who is having to prove himself the hard way. From seven runners he has produced three winners, including the Group 3-winning two-year-old Justin Case who, from four starts, has won twice and ran fourth in the Sistema Stakes.

Banquo (Credit: Waikato Stud)

Banquo hails from a strong Australian sprinting family being a full-brother to Oakleigh Plate (Gr 1, 1100m) winner Booker. A good-looking son of Written Tycoon (Iglesia), he was an AU$600,000 Magic Millions yearling who sires good-looking stock.

“Banquo’s progeny are showing us real promise, headlined by Justin Case who has risen through the grades quickly and will make an exciting three-year-old,” said Rennie.

“Current three-year-olds Portland and Mr Bombasa, who won on Monday, look to be workmen-like, too. The feedback from people like Jamie Beatson of Ohukia and Kris Shailer is that they love them.”

Banquo will stand for an increased fee of $5,000 (plus GST).

Te Akau add trio of classy mares to Magic Millions Broodmare Sale

Quintessa (Credit: Magic Millions)

Three elite racemares from the powerhouse Te Akau Racing operation are set to be among the headline offerings at next month’s Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale on the Gold Coast, with a high-quality draft to be presented through Newgate Farm.

Group 1 winners Captured By Love (Written Tycoon) and Quintessa (Shamus Award) will be joined by stakes winner My Lips Are Sealed (Ace High), offering buyers a trio of proven performers with strong commercial appeal as broodmare prospects.

Te Akau principal David Ellis said the draft reflected the stable’s long-standing approach of developing fillies and mares with both racetrack performance and residual breeding value.

“They are mares with proven performance, quality pedigrees and the physical attributes we believe are so important when selecting broodmares,” Ellis said.

Ellis also pointed to the operation’s strong history at the Magic Millions National Sale, both as a buyer and vendor, citing past success stories that have underpinned confidence in the marketplace.

“Barry Bowditch and his team run one of the very best sales operations you will find anywhere in the world, and it is a sale where we have had tremendous success over many years - both buying and selling," Ellis said.

“It’s a sale we have had great success at, over many years. We’ve been fortunate to source and sell high-quality horses here, and it’s a platform we believe in.”

Quintessa heads the offering as a dual Group 1 winner with form on both sides of the Tasman. The daughter of Shamus Award (Snitzel) captured the Levin Classic (Gr 1, 1600m) at three before adding further elite success in the Proisir Plate (Gr 1, 1400m) this season, while also proving highly competitive in Australia, including a stakes victory during a Melbourne campaign.

Captured By Love (Credit: Race Images)

“Quintessa is a mare with a tremendous turn of foot and a real will to win,” Ellis said. “She consistently performed at the top level and showed her quality in elite company.”

Captured By Love brings a similarly strong profile, having been one of the standout fillies of her generation. The daughter of Written Tycoon (Iglesia) recorded seven wins, including the New Zealand 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m), and was a stakes performer from two through to four.

She also demonstrated durability and consistency, competing against the best of her age group throughout her career and continuing to perform at stakes level in her four-year-old season.

“Captured By Love is a standout physically and has all the attributes you want in a broodmare prospect,” Ellis said. “She showed great toughness and was competitive at the highest level throughout her career.”

Completing the trio is My Lips Are Sealed, a daughter of Ace High (High Chaparral), who adds further depth to the draft through both performance and pedigree. A winner at Group 3 level, she added a Listed success earlier this year and hails from a family that has produced multiple stakes performers.

My Lips Are Sealed (Credit: Race Images)

“My Lips Are Sealed is a mare with great strength and presence,” Ellis said. “She has a very good attitude and all the makings of a quality broodmare.”

Newgate Farm’s managing director Henry Field said the consignment would be among the highlights of this year’s sale.

“We are honoured to offer these mares on behalf of Te Akau,” Field said. “There will be very few better groups of racemares offered anywhere in the Southern Hemisphere.”

The Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale continues to attract strong international interest, with buyers drawn to proven racemares capable of making an immediate impact in the breeding barn.

Entries for the sale are set to close this week, with demand expected to be high for quality, race-proven mares such as those offered by Te Akau.

Morning Briefing

Australia

Sir Delius primed to peak in Queen Elizabeth

Sir Delius (Credit: Racing Photos)

Sir Delius (Frankel) is set to produce his best performance of the campaign in Saturday’s Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at Randwick, according to co-trainer Adrian Bott. The weight-for-age feature has been the primary target for the five-year-old entire this preparation, with Bott confident he has now reached peak fitness. "He has been building well. He's right on track now and hopefully we'll see him run a personal best this preparation," Bott, who trains in partnership with Gai Waterhouse, said. Sir Delius has been working into form after returning from a break, following a spring campaign that featured wins in the Underwood Stakes (Gr 1, 1800m) and Turnbull Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) before his Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) plans were halted. “He’s taken a bit of racing to get there this time, but we’re happy with where he’s at now,” Bott said. Sir Delius is expected to settle closer from a favourable draw after getting back in the field in the Ranvet Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) last start. Bott acknowledged the strength of Saturday’s field, headed by unbeaten mare Autumn Glow (The Autumn Sun), along with Aeliana (Castelvecchio) and international raider Dubai Honour (Pride Of Dubai). “It’s a proper weight-for-age race and very competitive,” he said. "It's new ground for her [Autumn Glow], if we're trying to find anything to grasp onto. I have respect for her, not just her. Aeliana was very good last start. Lindermann even prior to that. It's a proper weight-for-age 2000-metre race."

Ohope Wins primed for Oaks rebound

Ohope Wins (Ocean Park) is expected to improve sharply stepping back up in trip for Saturday’s Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) at Randwick. The Chris Waller-trained filly disappointed as favourite when fourth in the Vinery Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at her Australian debut, but the stable is confident she can bounce back over a more suitable distance. Assistant trainer Charlie Duckworth said positive feedback from James McDonald following a recent gallop had lifted confidence. "James galloped her [on Tuesday] morning and said she feels more switched on, like a better horse today than when he rode her in the race," Duckworth said. "I don't know whether it's a case of the way we train, or things change, but up to the distance [2400 metres] I think she will justify the hype she had prior to her run in the Vinery, because they all thought she was just about unbeatable." Ohope Wins, already a Group 1 winner in New Zealand, remains well supported in early markets as she looks to add an Australian classic to her record. Stablemate Soverato (Vadamos) will also line up after finishing runner-up in the Adrian Knox Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m) last start and is expected to take her place despite the quick turnaround. "James rode her on Saturday, and he said, 'you've got to back her up. She is ready to peak'," Duckworth said. "The distance is obviously a question mark, because she hasn't been over it yet, but there is nothing to say she won't handle it." Kerrin McEvoy retains the ride on Soverato, while McDonald sticks with Ohope Wins.

Randwick runs to launch Brisbane bids for Begg pair

Trainer Grahame Begg will use Saturday’s Randwick meeting as a springboard to Queensland targets for stablemates Splash Back (Le Havre) and She’s A Hustler (Ace High). Splash Back resumes in the Sapphire Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) following a break since the spring, with Begg opting against a first-up run in Adelaide in favour of a softer reintroduction. "I was thinking about possibly going to the Sangster, because she does race well fresh, but I thought that might be too much to ask her first-up," Begg said. "So, I thought we'll take her to Sydney and run her in this race – [it's at] Randwick, a big track and she can be ridden where she's comfortable and be getting home at the finish." The mare has trialled strongly in the lead-up and is expected to improve into her preparation, which is aimed towards Group 1 assignments during the Brisbane winter carnival. Stablemate She’s A Hustler will also resume this weekend in the Queen Of The Turf Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m), her first start since claiming the Zipping Classic (Gr 2, 2400m) in November. Begg said the mare would take benefit from the run before heading north. "We're under no illusions, it's not going to be easy for her first-up, but she's going very well," Begg said. The pair are being set for races including the Hollindale Stakes (Gr 2, 1800m), Doomben Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) and Q22 (Gr 2, 2200m), with Jordan Childs to ride both runners at Randwick.

Inside draw boosts Screen Icon’s Percy Sykes claims

Screen Icon (Nicconi) shapes as a leading chance to break through at stakes level when she lines up in Saturday’s Percy Sykes Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Randwick. Trainer John Thompson believes the filly is well placed after drawing favourably, having endured wide barriers in each of her three starts to date. Screen Icon was narrowly denied a start in the Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m), with connections electing not to chase qualification in the lead-up, a decision Thompson hopes will prove beneficial. "I didn't run her again before the Slipper, because if I'd run her again, I wouldn't have backed up in the Slipper. It would have been too much," Thompson said. "So I took a punt to see if she got a run, but the three late entries buggered me, and she was an emergency. Hopefully it's a blessing, and she is right for the Percy Sykes." The filly has been competitive in strong company, placing in the Gimcrack Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m) and the Sweet Embrace Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m), and is expected to appreciate firmer conditions after a recent trial on heavy ground. "She didn't like the really heavy track that she trialled on, but back on top of the ground, she'll be right," he said. "She has got her foot on the till and the form around her is good, especially because she has been running well from bad draws." Thompson will also saddle La Morra (Toronado) in the Australian Oaks and Flying Embers (Shalaa) in the Provincial-Midway Championships Final (1400m). Chad Schofield rides Screen Icon and Flying Embers, while Regan Bayliss partners La Morra.

Satono Glow faces biggest test in Percy Sykes

Satono Glow (Credit: Racing Photos)

Satono Glow (Santono Aladdin) will look to continue her rapid rise when she steps out in Saturday’s Percy Sykes Stakes at Randwick. Trained by Tom Charlton, the filly has made significant progress in a short space of time, winning on debut before stepping up to Group 3 level at Flemington just over two weeks later. Satono Glow has returned to Sydney in good order following her Melbourne trip, with Charlton pleased with her condition heading into another rise in grade. “She’s got to where she has very naturally and it’s all happened quickly for her, you can see in her greenness when she does race she’s inclined to do a few things wrong,’’ Charlton told Racing NSW. “When she hits the front she has a good look around so hopefully she can keep improving. It looks a decent enough race, some similar promising types coming into it, as you’d expect for a feature two-year-old fillies race. She has a fantastic demeanour, took her trip incredibly well and has only thrived since. We’ll give it a go and hopefully she can run well.” The filly has raced exclusively on soft ground to date, although Charlton is confident she will be effective on firmer surfaces. “From our perspective there’s no reason why she’d be a wet tracker,’’ he said. “She has a beautiful low action and it’s just been the way it’s fallen that she’s run on soft tracks and obviously handled it.” Stablemate Stitzer (Maurice) will contest the Fernhill Stakes (Listed, 1600m), with a possible back-up into the Champagne Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) under consideration. “He’s a big, scopey horse and one for the future, but we’ve been happy with what he’s shown so far,” Charlton said.

Derby path on the line for Amazake at Caulfield

Amazake (Maurice) will press his claims for a start in the South Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) when he lines up in Saturday’s Galilee Series Final (Listed, 2400m) at Caulfield. The staying prospect, prepared by Ciaron Maher, will be joined in the race by stablemates Dad And Dave (Time Test) and Awesome Artist (Trapeze Artist). Assistant trainer Jack Turnbull said Amazake had developed well since his spring campaign and was now better equipped to tackle staying assignments. Amazake, still a maiden, has been competitive in stronger company, including a placing in the Norman Robinson Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m) before contesting the Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) last spring. He resumes off a fourth-place finish in the Alister Clark Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m), a race also contested by Dad And Dave, who claimed the Tasmanian Derby (Listed, 2200m) earlier this year. "We gave him a crack because he ran a place in the Norman Robinson, but he was up against Observer at that stage who was a cut above," Turnbull said of Amazake. "Time has been his friend and he's a fuller horse now and more mature. I think he'll be fine now, so we'll give him his chance, so he'll run on Saturday and then onto the Derby in South Australia. He's still a maiden, which you wouldn't believe, but he's won good prize money and has been running in good form races and only getting beaten a couple of lengths, with excuses. He's in good shape." Turnbull said Saturday’s result would determine whether Dad And Dave continues towards further Derby targets, while Awesome Artist could instead head to the VRC St Leger (Listed, 2800m).

On Display weighing options ahead of Adelaide target

On Display (Credit: Sportpix)

On Display (Fastnet Rock) has multiple pathways this weekend as connections plot a return to Adelaide for a tilt at the Queen Of The South Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) later this month. The Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained mare has accepted for both the Anniversary Vase (Listed, 1600m) and the City Of Adelaide Handicap (Listed, 1529m), with the Caulfield option shaping as the preferred lead-in. On Display finished fourth in last year’s Queen Of The South Stakes before returning a week later to win the Morphettville Guineas (Listed, 1600m), and the stable is keen to improve on that result. “She’s the high-quality one of ours in the race,” Kent Jnr said. The mare is third-up after finishing third in the Shaftesbury Avenue (Gr 3, 1400m) and fifth in the Sunline Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m), where she closed off strongly despite a slowly run race. "She is going well. She found the leader biased track at Flemington difficult to overcome and last time behind Treasurethe Moment, I haven't seen a race where they have gone that slowly for a long time,” Kent Jnr added. “The sectionals meant she had no chance, but she zipped home as good as anything in the race and she'll run well." Stablemates Taken (Ardrossan) and Golden Path (Belardo) are also engaged at Caulfield, with Taken coming off a strong second placing and Golden Path building towards a Queensland campaign. Thomas Stockdale is booked to ride On Display from barrier three.

Ten Warriors targets rich maiden final at Caulfield

Ten Warriors (Saxon Warrior) may have just one win to his name, but trainer Trevor Rogers has no complaints ahead of Saturday’s Up & Coming Stars Series Final (1200m) at Caulfield. The five-year-old has been a model of consistency, finishing outside the placings only a handful of times while already recouping his purchase price through prize-money. Rogers has targeted Victoria’s lucrative maiden series with the gelding, progressing through heats of the Emerging Stars (1400m), Future Stars (1200m - 1400m) and Up & Coming Stars (1200m - 1400m) programs to reach Saturday’s $300,000 final. “He’s been in all three series and has picked up good money along the way,” Rogers told Racing.com. “If he can win the final on Saturday, that will be nearly $300,000, throughout the series. I hope it happens.” Ten Warriors secured his place in the decider with a breakthrough victory at Caulfield Heath last month, having previously placed consistently without winning. “Absolutely [it was a relief] and it was the right heat to win, it was worth the most amount of money,” Rogers said. “Hopefully, he can win one more and then it’s been a great run through the series.” Jamie Mott will again partner Ten Warriors, who has drawn favourably in barrier five and has been kept up to the mark with a recent jumpout.

Record-breaking Winx filly Quinceanera retired unraced

The first foal of champion mare Winx (Street Cry), Quinceanera (Pierro), has been retired without making it to the racetrack. Owned by Woppitt Bloodstock, the daughter of Pierro (Lonhro) was purchased for $10 million at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale in 2024. Connections confirmed the decision on Wednesday, with the filly to commence her broodmare career following veterinary advice in consultation with trainer Chris Waller. “Although disappointing, it’s in her best interest to now begin her career as a broodmare,” a statement from Woppitt Bloodstock read. Quinceanera was the headline lot of her sale, where Debbie Kepitis secured the filly, retaining her within the ownership group of Winx, who won 25 Group 1 races during a career that saw her capture global attention. She is one of only a small number of progeny from Winx, whose most recent foal, a colt by Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice), was withdrawn from sale earlier this year, while the mare has since visited Too Darn Hot (Dubawi).

Ballarat, Mildura meetings transferred

Racing Victoria (RV) has confirmed changes to upcoming race meetings at Ballarat and Mildura, with both fixtures relocated. The Ballarat meeting scheduled for April 14 will now be conducted at Donald Racecourse, with the move designed to allow the Ballarat surface additional recovery time ahead of its next programmed meeting later in the month. The revised Donald program will feature six distance amendments. RV has also confirmed the Mildura meeting on April 21 will be transferred to Swan Hill Racecourse. The decision follows a review of the short-term racing calendar, with consideration given to participant travel, costs and likely field sizes amid rising fuel expenses. Six distance changes will also apply to the updated Swan Hill program.

Waldron targets Southern Alps prize with Cluedo Lane

Trainer Joe Waldron will look to build on a breakthrough stakes success when Cluedo Lane (Ghibellines) lines up in Saturday’s TAB Southern Alps Challenge (1600m) at Riccarton Park. The gelding produced a standout performance last start to win the White Robe Lodge (Gr 3, 1600m), defying his rating and carrying top weight to defeat higher-rated rivals. Waldron said the performance confirmed the horse’s ability, even if it exceeded expectations externally. “It was a surprise to a degree but not a shock for me,” he said. Cluedo Lane has been kept fresh since that victory, with connections mindful of preserving his handicap position ahead of Saturday’s $350,000 feature. “We didn’t want to risk picking up more weight,” Waldron said. “He’s done well since and we’re confident he’ll be competitive again.” The win continued a strong start to training for Waldron, who established his Wingatui stable earlier this season and has quickly built momentum with a small team. He will also be represented at Riccarton by Awesome Lineup (Awesome Rock) and American Liaison (American Pharoah), both of whom are progressing through the grades after successful stints in Australia. “I’m expecting them to run well,” Waldron said.

Ritchie, Murray turn focus to emerging talent

Tuxedo (Credit: Race Images)

The retirement of durable stayers Mahrajaan (Kitten’s Joy) and Nereus (Savabeel) will see trainers Shaune Ritchie and Colm Murray turn their attention to a new generation of talent. Mahrajaan, winner of both the New Zealand Cup (Gr 3, 3200m) and Auckland Cup (Gr 2, 3200m), has been retired following his latest campaign, while Nereus bows out as a multiple stakes winner, highlighted by victory in the Awapuni Gold Cup (Gr 2, 2100m). “They are both fantastic horses and have been great for the stable,” Ritchie said. Focus now shifts to emerging stable flagbearer Tuxedo (Tivaci), who impressed with a fast-finishing third in the Bonecrusher New Zealand Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) and is being aimed towards weight-for-age targets in the spring. Three-year-old filly Tajana (Darci Brahma) is set to be kept to shorter trips next preparation after failing to run out the distance in the New Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m), with connections identifying a mile as her preferred range. Meanwhile, juvenile Summer Schemer (Dirty Work) will be aimed at sprint distances as a three-year-old after her unplaced run in the Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m).

48 for Mehmas

Tally-Ho Stud stallion Mehmas (Acclamation) got to within two of his half-century of individual stakes winner when Afandy (3 g ex Jalwa by Shalaa) became his 48th in the Prix Djebel (Gr 3, 1400m) at Deauville on Tuesday. Ridden by Cristian Demuro for trainer Jean-Claude Rouget, the gelding made all and ran on well inside the closing stages to beat Samangan (Blue Point) by a length and three-quarters. There was a further two lengths back to Cielo Di Roma (Romanised) in third place. Bred and raced by Al Shaqab Racing, Afandy is out of the winning Shalaa (Invincible Spirit) mare Jalwa, who is from the family of 2012 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf (Gr 1, 10f) winner Zagora (Green Tune). Mehmas is standing for a fee of €70,000 (approx. AU$115,950).

46 for Kendargent

Showna (3 f ex Show Gorb by Caradak) became the 46th individual stakes winner for Haras de Colleville stallion Kendargent (Kendor) when causing a shock in Tuesday’s Prix Imprudence (Gr 3, 1400m) at Deauville. Sent off as a 64-1 chance under Marvin Grandin, the Satoshi Kobayashi-trained filly led late in the contest and kept on well to beat My Highness (Ghaiyyath) by two and a half lengths with a further length and three-quarters back to Isle Of Fernandez (Lope Y Fernandez) in third. Bred by Guy Pariente Holding, Showna is raced by Guy Pariente and her trainer and is a half-sister to the stakes-placed winner Showay (Galiway) being out of the Group-placed mare Show Gorb (Caradak). Kendargent is standing for a fee of €12,000 (approx. AU$19,880).

Two for Chachnak

Stolen Kiss (4 c ex Satiriste by Shamardal) provided his sire Chachnak (Kingman) with his second individual stakes winner on Tuesday when narrowly landing the Prix Cor de Chasse (Listed, 1100m) at Deauville. Ridden by Alexis Pouchin for trainer Patrice Cottier, the four-year-old entire led inside the final 110 yards and defeated Group 1 winner Sajir (Make Believe) by a head. There was a further length and three-quarters back to Vicious Harry (Harry Angel) in third. Bred by Louis Baudron, who also races the colt in partnership with Gousserie Racing, Stolen Kiss is out of the Shamardal (Giant’s Causeway) mare Satiriste. Chachnak is standing at Haras de la Gastine.

A large dose of intricate breeding appears to have worked wonders with Blue Door (Stay Inside), Bjorn Baker’s exciting two-year-old filly who followed a 7.63-length barrier trial romp with a debut victory in Saturday’s Kindergarten Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m).

What immediately catches the eye is that she’s inbred to one of Australia’s great blue hens in Shantha’s Choice (Canny Lad) and to the all-time king Danehill (Danzig), who’s there in triplicate.

Better still, Shantha’s Choice isn’t repeated through that fairly common doubling of her most famous son, the breed-shaping Redoute’s Choice (Danehill), but by him and one of her daughters, making for a 5m x 3f duplication.

Redoute’s is Blue Door’s fourth sire, via Not A Single Doubt, Extreme Choice and Stay Inside.

And Shantha’s Choice also comes in powerfully at the bottom as Blue Door’s third dam, via her daughter Monsoon Wedding (Danehill) and dam Notting Hill (Pierro).

Throw in a 6m, 4m, 6m x 4m of Danzig (Northern Dancer) - who’s Danehill’s sire but is also represented in the second of those spots by Stay Inside’s damsire Anabaa - and the recipe grows stronger.

And the reinforcements keep coming with a 5m x 6m of the influential Mr Prospector (Raise A Native) and a 6f x 6m, in slightly stronger locations, of Sir Tristram (Sir Ivor). He’s there as the damsire of Nothin’ Leica Dane (Danehill), who’s Stay Inside’s second damsire, and as the imported head of the sireline leading to Notting Hill, through Zabeel, Octagonal, Lonhro and Pierro.

Blue Door is the most exciting product so far from the relatively new southern operation of American Craig Bernick's Armitage Australia. His enterprise here is entwined with Yarraman Park and is handled by bloodstock agent Will Johnson, who previously worked amongst Bernick's European endeavours, handled by Ireland's Hubie De Burgh.

And Blue Door has some regal, not to say expensive, female lines.

Notting Hill was the top-priced filly at the 2016 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, knocked down from Coolmore’s draft to De Burgh Equine and James Harron for $1.4 million.

She managed only four starts for Kris Lees, winning at Kempsey and Muswellbrook and placing at Taree and Newcastle, before her ownership decided her racetrack deeds would probably not outshine her pedigree, and retired her.

A week later, her sparse racing CV didn’t stop Newgate paying a hefty $950,000 for her as a late three-year-old at the MM National Broodmare Sale of 2018. She later found her way into Bernick’s ownership, after being shipped to America and being put in-foal to War Front (Danzig), a mating that produced a winning filly named Maroon Bells.

Blue Door’s second dam Monsoon Wedding trumped her daughter Notting Hill, money wise. Coolmore paid $2.3 million for her in the Teeley Dispersal at the MM broodmare sale of 2014.

Monsoon Wedding ran third at Group 2 and Listed level, but the greater appeal was her full sisterhood to Redoute’s Choice and his fellow elite winner Platinum Scissors.

She was also a half-sister to another Group 1 victor in Manhattan Rain (Encosta De Lago) and his Listed-winning brother Echoes Of Heaven, and dual stakes winner Sliding Cube (Rock Of Gibraltar) - who’s now best known as the sire of Group 1-producing sire Rubick (Encosta De Lago).

And then you have Shantha’s Choice as third dam. For the record, her racing career consisted of only two starts, for a win at Seymour and a second at Sandown in July, 1995. But that hardly matters, considering her subsequent breeding record - part of the reason Bernick was so keen to put her to Stay Inside.

“Craig loves inbreeding to dominant females, so we came up with Stay Inside,” Johnson told It’s In The Blood. “He’s big on that Rasmussen factor of repeating dominant females.

“You can’t have too much of a good thing, but also, even if the foal isn’t much good on the racetrack, they can often produce something good.

“Plus the physical mating looked good, and the resultant filly was a very good filly. She walked extremely well and now it appears she can gallop extremely well.

“If the physical matches up with a bit of pedigree analysis, one, you’re rewarded on the sales ground, and two, you’ll be rewarded on the track.

“First and foremost Craig is trying to breed racehorses and hence looked into the duplication of Shantha’s choice, which was more important than the three lines of Danehill.”

Johnson said it was likely he and Bernick would stick with sires with Redoute’s Choice in their pedigree to again duplicate Shantha’s Choice in Notting Hill’s next cover. Stay Inside is an obvious - and now proven - choice, but there’s also a booming sire in The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice) to consider. Another son, Alabama Express, could qualify as an option.

Blue Door became Stay Inside’s third stakes winner, after colt Incognito in Randwick’s Breeders’ Plate (Gr 3, 1000m) and filly Lassified in Trentham’s Wellesley Stakes (Listed, 1100m).

After a slightly quiet start, Stay Inside has risen to second on the Australian first season sires’ table behind only Home Affairs (I Am Invincible), who’s assured of the title due to his son Guest House’s Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) win.

However, Stay Inside is first on the table by winners (four) and equal-first by black type victors (two).

The seven-year-old - who could be in for a fifth season fee bump from his 2025 mark of $66,000 (inc GST) - carries double Danehill at 4m x 4m in his pedigree. The GOAT is his fourth sire and the second sire of his second dam, via his son Nothin’ Leica Dane.

But despite many historical aversions to double Danehill, especially of the double male variety, and the great number of Australian mares with Danehill in their bloodlines (such as Notting Hill), Newgate’s Henry Field is unconcerned.

“Double Danehill isn’t an issue if you’ve got a good horse,” Field said.

Blue Door is a case in point. Since Danehill is her second damsire, she has him in triplicate at 5m, 5m x 3f. It didn’t look to have slowed her down on her debut.

Raced by John Singleton, Blue Door shapes as the earliest star performer among three to race in Australia out of Notting Hill.

All were bred by Armitage and sold at Easter sales by Yarraman Park, but it’s only Blue Door who has that doubling of Shantha’s Choice, and the tripling of Danehill, since the first two are by I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit), who carries neither Shantha’s Choice nor Danehill.

Blue Door fetched $400,000, knocked down to Waterhouse-Bott and Kestrel Thoroughbreds, before finding her way to Baker’s stable in Singleton’s colours.

Her year-older half-sister was the fifth-top lot at Inglis Easter 2024, bought by Victoria’s Hilldene Farm for $1.8 million. Now known as Thalestris, the three-year-old has a Geelong placing among two starts for Anthony and Sam Freedman.

Incidentally, two spots above her on that Easter 2024 pecking order (still way behind Winx’s retired unraced $10 million filly Quinceanera) was the $2.2 million buy Plaintiff (Zoustar). While Blue Door won Randwick’s first race on Saturday, Plaintiff won the last, in the P J Bell Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m).

Notting Hill’s first Australian foal, Bella Corazon, fetched $400,000 when bought by Annabel Neasham (now Annabel Archibald). She’s won thrice from 17 starts, including once at Rosehill.

Blue Door’s pedigree has considerable quality deeper in as well.

The main female influence is the ubiquitous Natalma (Native Dancer), with 12 mentions from the sixth to the ninth removes, while another key blue hen in Lalun (Djeddah) is repeated five times, four of those in the dam’s half.

Nearco (Pharos) is the dominant stallion, with 18 appearances.

Aside from Stay Inside’s success itself, what’s also delighting Field is the consideration of who he is by - Newgate’s flagbearing sub-fertile star Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt).

Stay Inside is one of two sons of Extreme Choice with first crop stakes winners, with Rosemont’s Extreme Warrior having sired Eternal Warrior, who Lloyd Kennewell has trained to a debut victory in Caulfield’s Merson Cooper Stakes (Listed, 1000m), plus a third in the Blue Diamond Prelude (Gr 3, 1100m) and a 2.05-length sixth in the Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m).

Extreme Choice - the headlining sire from last month’s Inglis Easter Yearling Sale with seven seven-figure lots - in fact has three sons in the top eight on the Australian first season sires’ table, with Newgate’s Tiger Of Malay currently third, with the dual Listed-placed filly Momentlikethese his main performer.

“Extreme Choice is looking like a sire of sires now, and that’s so important,” Field said. “He’s already had two sons produce stakes winners, and Stay Inside just couldn’t be going any better.

“So we’re just thrilled with the whole picture, the whole lineage.”
