Ocean Park back in the frame as miracle filly Ohope Wins completes Oaks double

Ocean Park (Credit: Waikato Stud)

Waikato Stud believe their ultra consistent stallion Ocean Park (Thorn Park) has again emphatically proved himself a sire under the radar after the trans-Tasman Oaks double of a filly who’s incredibly lucky to merely be alive, Ohope Wins.

Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) winner Ocean Park is a rising 18-year-old whose books of mares have gradually diminished in recent years in the wait for another top-liner after his second-crop stars Tofane and Kolding, who won four and three top-tier events respectively.

What's On

But his other numbers are holding up extremely well.

Ocean Park, who covered just 50 mares at $15,000 (plus GST) last spring, sits third on New Zealand’s general sires’ table in his tenth season of runners, behind only past champion sire Proisir (Choisir) and the all-time great Savabeel (Zabeel). That’s a hefty improvement on his career-best finish of 14th in just his fourth campaign.

His four stakes winners in New Zealand also constitute a personal best – one more than his high recorded in 2020-21 – a season which remains his finest in Australia by stakes-winners (seven), when Tofane and Kolding were peaking.

And with Ohope Wins putting his name back in the spotlight by becoming just the fourth filly to complete the New Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) - Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) double, Waikato is justifiably hopeful of a boost to Ocean Park’s covering numbers this spring, if not perhaps back to his all-time high of 189 in Covid-tainted 2020.

“I really think he’s a bit under the radar, perhaps more so than being underrated,” Waikato’s general manager Mike Rennie told ANZ News.

“His stats have never been below four per cent stakes winners to runners, or 60 per cent winners to runners, since I’ve been at Waikato, and that’s almost eight years.

“And he’s always had the capacity to breed a top horse, which we’ve seen with Tofane and Kolding, and a few others.

“He’s still got some decent books coming through now. His progeny are probably mostly post-Christmas three-year-olds and onwards, which was when he hit his straps as a racehorse.

“So, he’s always been there or thereabouts, his stats have been rock solid, even when he hasn’t had a big, big year. And he’s always had a good one out there, and from a range of distances too.

“It’s comforting this season that he’s doing exactly what we know he can. He’s very consistent. You know what you’re going to get when you breed to Ocean Park. Like anything, you’ve got to probably breed him right a little bit – send the right mare and the right nick, and you’re never going to be far away, especially at $15,000.

“I think Pins and the Danehill line are two notable nicks. Makfi has stepped up there as well, and Sadler’s Wells.

“He’s a medium-sized horse and a good mover. If you can put a bit of scope and oomph in, that's probably the ideal type of mare.

“But in saying that, his smaller ones are stakes winners too. His biggest trait is he leaves very tough horses.”

Ohope Wins (Credit: Bradley Photos)

Pins (Snippets) is Ocean Park’s most common nick and his most successful for stakes winners of more than eight runners, with 37 winners from 57 starters, and six stakes victors at 10.5 per cent.

Danasinga, Fastnet Rock and Redoute’s Choice – all sons of Danehill (Danzig) – also rank highly, as does Sadler’s Wells’s son High Chaparral. And Makfi (Dubawi) has provided one runner for one Group 1 winner in Kovalica, who like Kolding and Ohope Wins, was trained by another major fan of Ocean Park in expat New Zealander Chris Waller.

Ocean Park’s five elite-level winners have scored at the top level from 1400 metres – for all four of Tofane’s and one of Kolding’s – to the 3200 metres of Auckland Cup hero Ocean Billy, when that race was still a Group 1 in 2021.

Of his 26 career stakes winners – from 615 runners at 4.2 per cent – eight have come in the 1001 to 1200-metre range.

Ocean Park’s four stakes winners this term have come in a neat progression.

They started when six-year-old gelding Mystic Park took Riccarton’s TAB Mile (Gr 3, 1600m) in November, before three-year-old filly Tellum won Ellerslie’s Eight Carat Classic (Gr 2, 1600m) on Boxing Day.

Two more Group 2s came on the one afternoon at Te Rapa on February 7 when Autumn Glory won the Waikato Guineas (Gr 2, 2000m) three races before Ohope Wins claimed the Sir Tristram Fillies Classic (Gr 2, 2100m).

That pair illustrate big-spending Yulong’s faith in Ocean Park. Ohope Wins was having her first start in Zhang Yuesheng’s colours, while Autumn Glory would days later join the green and white army, which also purchased Tofane for $3.1 million after her penultimate start, at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale of 2022.

And Ohope Wins, trained by Lance O’Sullivan and Andrew Scott, would step up to provide Yulong with Group 1 gratification in her next start after the Fillies Classic, taking the New Zealand Oaks by 2.2 lengths.

After a transfer to Sydney and Chris Waller and a fourth in the Vinery Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m), on Saturday she joined the select NZ-Australian Oaks double club, alongside Pennyweka (Satono Aladdin) in 2023, Bonneval (Makfi) in 2017, and Domino (Grosvenor) in 1990.

Showing her high rating, Ohope Wins also started a $2.60 favourite, despite that blemish in the Vinery.

Bred by long-term Waikato clients Bill and Jim Gartshore, Ohope Wins is the standout among four named foals for her placed Australian dam Choux Mania (Redoute’s Choice). The 12-year-old mare was perhaps due to leave a quality performer – her first three named foals being unplaced – given that she’s a three-quarter sister to top-flight winner Miss Wilson (Stratum) and a half-sister to five-time Group 1 victor Jimmy Choux (Thorn Park).

And it’s a chilling thought that the best of the bunch, by rights, shouldn’t be here at all.

All had seemed normal with Ohope Wins’ birth on September 1, 2022, until a couple of days later, Rennie recalls, when Waikato staff noticed she was listless. This grew worse when the newborn filly suddenly collapsed.

She was rushed from Waikato to the Matamata Veterinary Services (MVS) hospital, where it was found she was suffering a slightly delayed case of neonatal isoerythrolysis, better known as NI.

The condition means the antibodies a foal needs from her dam’s colostrum in the first 24-72 hours of life – which are usually crucial in protecting a foal – are in fact destroying the newborn’s red blood cells.

“It’s not very common,” Rennie said, “and it means the mare’s antibodies are attacking the foal’s immunity, rather than helping it.”

At the MVS hospital, the situation looked grim. The markers the foal Ohope Wins returned through blood tests were desperately low. In fact, the hospital had never seen a foal with such low readings survive the condition.

But survive she did, perhaps showing signs of the toughness she now displays on the racetrack – and which could well have been passed on by her sire.

“One thing about Ocean Park’s horses is they’re very tough, really gutsy,” Rennie said. “Lots of them win by small margins because they guts it out from a long way out, like he did himself. They do a lot with what they’ve got.

“They’ve got great cardiovascular capacity, and mental toughness.

“What’s happening with Ohope Wins is amazing, because she really shouldn’t be in this world. It’s a credit to the team at Waikato and the vets at MVS that she survived.

“The staff saw the foal collapse and she just about drowned in a puddle. They scooped her up, got her onto a trailer and onto a float and got her to MVS, who were very proficient and fast, and managed to stabilise her.

One thing about Ocean Park’s horses is they’re very tough, really gutsy… What’s happening with Ohope Wins is amazing, because she really shouldn’t be in this world

Mike Rennie

“She had some of the lowest stats for any foal to survive the condition the clinic had seen. But thankfully, she came good, came back to the farm and grew out. We always thought a lot of her, so it’s great to see her doing what she’s doing now.

“Everyone knows about the trainers and the owners of horses, but they don’t necessarily know the backstory. The group at the farm and the MVS clinic saved Ohope Wins’ life. It’s a real credit to the team at Waikato and to MVS.”

From those desperate beginnings, Ohope Wins has now amassed $1.5 million in prize money, with four wins from eight starts, and with plenty more likely to come.

The filly was wound in on Saturday night by bookmakers for the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups, becoming a $26 chance in both. Her new trainer will likely be looking forward to both.

“Speaking with Lance O’Sullivan, the confidence he had in her – he said she’s one of the best horses that he’s ever had to deal with,” Waller said after Saturday’s Oaks triumph.

“So it’s a pretty big comment coming from him.”

Morning Briefing

Australia

Unbeaten Southend steps up to Group 1 test

Southend (Palace Pier) will put his perfect record on the line when he rises to the Champagne Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at Randwick on Saturday. Trained by Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou, the colt has made a strong impression in two starts, following a debut win at Newcastle with victory in the Baillieu Handicap (Gr 3, 1400m) at Rosehill last month. That performance also saw him become the first Australian stakes winner for his sire Palace Pier (Kingman), a dual champion miler in Europe. Ryan has previously gone close in the Champagne Stakes, with Flying Snitzel (Snitzel) and Williamsburg (Snitzel) both placing, and believes Southend profiles similarly off his Baillieu success. “I’ve been excited about him since the sales,” Ryan said. “He’s very straightforward and has done everything right so far.” The colt has been set specifically for the race, bypassing the Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) in favour of a lighter lead-in. “He’s come through his last win really well and continues to improve,” Ryan said. Southend will again be ridden by Dylan Gibbons as he tackles the mile for the first time in one of two Group 1 features on the card.

Bankers Choice targets rare Mornington Cup repeat

Bankers Choice (Mongolian Khan) will attempt to join a select group when he lines up in Saturday’s Mornington Cup (Listed, 2400m), bidding to become just the second multiple winner of the race. The veteran stayer claimed last year’s edition in a narrow finish when trained by the late Mike Moroney, with Glen Thompson overseeing the stable at the time. He now races under the Lindsay Park banner of Will, JD and Ben Hayes. The eight-year-old son of Mongolian Khan (Holy Roman Emperor) has returned in solid form this preparation, placing in the Peter Young Stakes (Gr 2, 1800m) before a competitive effort in the Easter Cup (Gr 3, 2000m) last time. He is expected to meet several of those rivals again, including the winner Ambassadorial (Fiorente), but the step up to 2400 metres is anticipated to play to his strengths. Despite likely carrying a significant impost, connections are confident his toughness and staying profile will again be well suited to the Mornington feature.

Victorian trio target Quokka riches at Ascot

Jigsaw (Credit: Sportpix)

Three Victorian-trained runners will headline an interstate assault on Saturday’s $5 million The Quokka (1200m) at Ascot. Cindy Alderson will saddle in-form Group 1 winner Jigsaw (Manhattan Rain), while Robbie Griffiths returns with Rey Magnerio (Magnus) and Ciaron Maher is represented by Spywire (Trapeze Artist). Jigsaw enters the slot race in peak form, chasing a seventh consecutive win after victories in the Railway Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) and William Reid Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m), and will again be partnered by Logan Bates. Rey Magnerio, winner of the The Gold Rush (1400m) in December, resumes his Perth campaign second-up after a close sixth behind Jigsaw in the William Reid and will be ridden by William Pike. Spywire earned his place following a front-running victory in the Ballarat Discovery (1000m), with John Allen to take the ride. They form part of a 12-horse field chasing the $2 million winner’s cheque, with previous winners including Overpass (Vancouver) and Jokers Grin (Maschino).

Singleton taking patient path with promising Lord Remlap

Lord Remlap (Star Turn) will look to maintain his unbeaten record when he lines up in the Scone Equine Handicap (1100m) at Scone today, but trainer Scott Singleton is in no rush with the progressive three-year-old. A dominant debut winner at the track last month, Lord Remlap has been brought along patiently, with Singleton mindful of the gelding’s size and development. “He’s a big horse and we’ve given him the time and grounding he needed,” Singleton told Racing NSW. “He’s still learning what it’s all about and he’s better when he has something to chase.” The gelding has trialled since his debut and is expected to strip fitter second-up. “He was out on his feet late first-up, but he’s improved from that run and again from the trial,” he said. A half-brother to handy galloper Sir Remlap (Rubick), Lord Remlap has already shown similar ability, with Singleton confident he can measure up to stronger grades in time. “I think he’s at least Highway grade and if he gets over a bit further he might be better than that, but we’ll take it one step at a time,” he said. Singleton also saddles Truce (Epaulette) in the race, but conceded she may find her stablemate hard to hold out despite an encouraging first-up effort.

Wooded strikes with first Australian runner

Crank (Credit: Racing Photos)

Crank (Wooded) made an immediate impact on debut at Terang on Sunday, becoming the first Australian runner and winner for Swettenham Stud shuttle sire Wooded (Wootton Basset) with an impressive victory in testing conditions. The two-year-old, trained by Sam and Anthony Freedman and raced by MyRacehorse, handled the heavy track well to score by 1.5 lengths on debut. Bred by Adam Sangster, Crank is out of Energy Within (Toronado) and was initially purchased for $60,000 at the Inglis Great Southern Weanling Sale before being resold for $200,000 at Karaka Book 1. His performance suggested further upside, particularly given the manner in which he handled the conditions, and connections will now look to build on the encouraging first-up display. It also provided an early boost for the southern hemisphere prospects of Wooded, a Group 1-winning son of the late Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj) who was one of Europe’s leading sprinters and is now shuttling to Australia from Haras de Bouquetot. He is due back at Swettenham Stud this spring, with his fee set at $16,500 (inc GST).

Hellenic Belle claims Wellington Boot success

Hellenic Belle (2 f Hellbent - Beside You, by Ready's Image) stamped herself as a filly of promise with victory in the Wellington Boot (1100m) worth $200,000 at Wellington on Sunday. The daughter of Yarraman sire Hellbent (I Am Invincible) was bred by NSW’s Lincoln Farm and consigned by Attunga Stud at the Gold Coast National Yearling Sale, where she was knocked down for $145,000 to Triple Crown Syndications. She is a sister to Group 2-placed Marokopa Falls and the fourth winner from four foals to race from winning Ready’s Image (More Than Ready) mare Beside You. Trained by Archibald Racing, Hellenic Belle defeated Darby Racing’s Better Off Alone (Better Than Ready) by 1.3 lengths, repeating the result from The Starmaker Handicap (1000m) at Muswellbrook a fortnight ago. Beside You was covered again last spring by Hellbent, who was announced last week at $55,000 (inc GST) for the upcoming season. Hellenic Belle is his fourth juvenile winner this season, those headlined by Group 3 winner Zip Lock. The son of I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) has three colts catalogued at the upcoming Inglis HTBA Sale.

Waller reflects on Autumn Glow defeat

Chris Waller has reflected on the defeat of Autumn Glow (The Autumn Sun) in Saturday’s Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at Randwick, suggesting the step up in distance may not have suited the mare. Sent out a short-priced favourite, Autumn Glow was beaten into third behind Sir Delius (Frankel) and Lindermann (Lonhro), suffering the first defeat of her 12-start career in her initial attempt at 2000 metres. Waller reported the mare had come through the run well but acknowledged the decision to stretch her to the trip had not delivered the desired result. “I’m disappointed for the horse as she gave everything, but I simply got her distance range wrong,” he told Racing.com. Autumn Glow will now head to a spell ahead of a spring campaign, with connections confident she can return to her best over more suitable distances. Pre-race, questions had been raised whether or not her pedigree suited a trip of 2000 metres, with her dam Via Africa (Bump ‘n’ Grind) a noted sprinter.

Dracarys’ Swift Dragon lands Capricornia Classic as Goody doubles up

Lot 94: Dracarys ex Grey Mink colt (Credit: Magic Millions)

Swift Dragon (Dracarys) added further juvenile success for trainer Liam Birchley when taking out the Magic Millions Capricornia 2YO Classic (1200m) at Rockhampton on Sunday, before owner Liam Goody capped the day by reinvesting in the sire at the corresponding yearling sale.

Already a winner of the Aquis QTIS Jewel (1200m), Swift Dragon was sent out a dominant favourite and delivered accordingly, cruising clear under Ryan Wiggins to score by 3.2 lengths. The victory was his third from six starts and lifted his earnings to just shy of $430,000.

The second top lot from last year’s Magic Millions Capricornia Yearling Sale when realising $60,000 from the draft of Ellay Bloodstock, Swift Dragon is the first winner out of the Rothesay (Fastnet Rock) mare Tay Swift, herself a daughter of stakes winner Perfect Feeling (Spinning World).

Goody returned to the ring later in the day to secure this year’s sale-topping colt by Dracarys, paying $105,000 for Lot 94, offered by Telemon Stud, to set a new record for the sale and surpass the previous high of $80,000.

The colt is out of the Lonhro (Octagonal) mare Grey Mink, whose first runner Lonhy’s Fabre, also by Dracarys, is a winner for Goody.

“He’s a beautiful big horse… it was a privilege to have him under our care at the sale,” said Telemon Stud’s Dan Fletcher.

“Great result. Liam Goody is also a client of our farm, and he had the winner of the big race by the same stallion this morning and bought a nice colt this afternoon.”

The result capped a strong showing for Dracarys (Snitzel), who led the sires’ table at the sale by gross with $139,000 for three lots at an average of $46,333, while continuing to build momentum on the track with Swift Dragon among his headline performers alongside Hong Kong stakes winner Storm Rider.

Local trainer Clinton Taylor was the most active buyer at the sale, securing six lots for $128,000 at an average of $21,333.

“There was some jubilation around the ring as he broke the record for the sale,” Dracarys part-owner Justin Stivano said of Lot 94. “Dracarys is really stamping himself in the sales ring… he had the second top price last year and this year having the sale topper.”

The son of Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) covered 65 mares in 2025 at a fee of $9,900 (inc GST), and has sired two stakes winners and 41 winners from 70 runners.

Chautauqua progressing well after melanoma treatment

Champion sprinter Chautauqua (Encosta De Lago) is responding positively to treatment for melanomas, with the multiple Group 1 winner continuing to thrive in retirement. Affectionately known as “Sharky”, the grey gelding has undergone a combination of surgery and targeted chemotherapy as part of his treatment program, with veterinary teams pleased with his progress. Care has been overseen by the team at University of Melbourne Werribee Equine Centre, where several larger melanomas have been removed, while others have been treated with injections. He has also commenced a course of a new vaccine, reflecting advances in melanoma management in horses. Chautauqua’s recovery has been supported by close post-operative care, with his calm temperament aiding the process. A three-time winner of the TJ Smith Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) and one of the most recognisable sprinters of his generation, Chautauqua remains a popular figure at Living Legends in Victoria.

Bona Sforza set for Australian tilt after Riccarton success

Bona Sforza (Written By) could be bound for Australia following her victory in the New Zealand Bloodstock Insurance Stakes (Listed, 1600m) at Riccarton on Saturday. Trained by Samantha Finnegan, the daughter of Written By (Written Tycoon) recorded her second stakes win, 12 months on from claiming the Welcome Stakes (Listed, 1000m) at the same meeting. Finnegan has enjoyed notable success with the filly at Riccarton, including a placing in the Canterbury Belle Stakes (Listed, 1200m) and a fourth in the New Zealand 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m), with firm footing a key factor in her performances. “She just needs a firm track,” Finnegan said. “She loves a good surface and Riccarton presents a beautiful track.” Originally set to race at Te Rapa, connections altered plans due to Cyclone Vaianu, instead heading south where the filly again delivered. “The original plan was to go north, but when the weather looked bad we had to change plans and come down here,” she said. Having now proven herself at a mile, attention is turning to further black-type options, with the Australasian Oaks (Gr 1, 2000m) emerging as a potential target. Purchased for $150,000 from the NZB Book 1 Yearling Sale, Bona Sforza has now won twice from six starts and continues to build a promising record for her small but ambitious stable.

Oceana Dream makes winning Australian debut at Caulfield

Oceana Dream (Ocean Park) made a successful start to his Australian career, returning from a lengthy absence to claim the Ern Jensen Funerals - Pinder Family Mile (1600m) at Caulfield on Saturday. The Ocean Park (Thorn Park) gelding, bred and raced by Ron and Judi Wanless, had not been seen since his fourth start in the New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) in March 2025. During that initial campaign, when trained by Roger James and Robert Wellwood, he won his first two starts and placed in the Avondale Guineas (Gr 2, 2100m), highlighting his staying potential. Now in the care of Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman, Oceana Dream was given time to acclimatise in Australia before resuming over a mile. Settling off the pace, he built momentum from the home turn and finished strongly to prevail in a tight finish. “He felt really happy the whole way and I knew I had a lot of horse under me,” jockey Linda Meech said. Coleman said the patient approach had been key to the result. “It’s great to get a win for the Wanless family, who have been so patient,” she said. “He came over with good New Zealand form but needed time to settle, so we gave him a long break. It wasn’t an ideal kick-off over a mile, especially on that track, but it was great to see him so strong late.” Out of Clevedon Bay (Redoute’s Choice), Oceana Dream shapes as a progressive middle-distance prospect, with further improvement expected as he builds fitness this preparation.

Avantaggia earns black-type shot after Otaki win

Avantaggia (Wooton Bassett) took another step towards her pedigree expectations when scoring at Otaki on Saturday to earn a crack at stakes company. The daughter of Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj) and champion mare Avantage (Fastnet Rock) landed the Porirua Club Punters Handicap (1200m) under Samantha Collett, registering her second win from five starts. Trained by Mark Walker and Sam Bergerson for Te Akau Racing, the filly has been closely followed since being purchased for A$2.1 million at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. “She was strong through the line and it was a good effort,” Walker said. Avantaggia had shown promise in her earlier runs, breaking her maiden at Te Aroha before placing at Matamata, and connections believe she is still developing physically. “She’s taken time to furnish, but she’s only going to get better,” Walker said. The filly is now set to step up to black-type level in the Cambridge Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) on ANZAC Day. The stable also enjoyed a successful weekend, highlighted by a quinella in the Welcome Stakes (Listed, 1000m) with Enchantment (Hello Youmzain) and Never Too Much (Rubick), while Insatiable (All Too Hard) and Cognoscenti (Castelvecchio) added further wins on the card.

JPN: Champion filly Star Anise returns to land Oka Sho

Star Anise (Credit: Japan Racing Association)

Japan’s leading two-year-old filly Star Anise (3 f Drefong – Epice Arome, by Daiwa Major) added a Classic to her résumé on seasonal debut with a decisive victory in Sunday’s Oka Sho (Gr 1, 1600m) at Hanshin. The Northern Farm homebred had already become the second top-level winner for her sire Drefong (Gio Ponti) when landing the Hanshin Juvenile Fillies (Gr 1, 1600m) late last year. Ridden by Kohei Matsuyama on Sunday, the Tomokazu Takano-trained filly was sent off the hot favourite and settled in midfield before sweeping into contention six-wide on the home turn and powering clear. She scored by two and a half lengths from Garavogue (Lord Kanaloa), runner-up in the same juvenile feature. Out of Daiwa Major’s (Sunday Silence) dual Graded stakes-winning daughter Epice Arome, Star Anise now boasts three wins from five starts, while Northern Farm recorded a fourth consecutive Oka Sho winner. “I’m incredibly happy,” Matsuyama said. “I trusted her and believed that if I went with her rhythm, she wouldn’t lose. She seemed to be in excellent form and once she took the lead, she ran on with incredible power. It was a truly impressive victory.”

83 for Night Of Thunder

Britain and Ireland’s reigning Champion Sire Night Of Thunder (Dubawi) registered his 83rd individual stakes winner on Sunday when the Karl Burke-trained Evolutionist (3 f ex Model Guest, by Showcasing) ran out an impressive winner of the Prix de la Grotte (Gr 3, 1600m) at Longchamp. The filly showed her Classic credentials, producing a taking turn of foot to draw clear and score by two and a half lengths over Narissa (Siyouni) with Pierchic (Palace Pier) a short neck away in third. Bred by Gigginstown House, Evolutionist was purchased for €600,000 at the Goffs Orby Sale in 2024. She is now a two-time winner in five starts and will be pointed towards runs in Classic company, with the English, Irish and French 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) all on the table before a likely tilt at the Prix de Diane (Gr 1, 2100m) at Chantilly in June. Darley’s Night Of Thunder is standing at Kildangan Stud for €200,000 (approx. AU$331,800).

Seven for Pinatubo

Darley shuttler Pinatubo (Shamardal) recorded his seventh individual stakes winner when Komorebi (3 c ex Lyric Of Light, by Street Cry) scored a tough win in Sunday’s Prix de Fontainebleau (Gr 3, 1600m) at Longchamp. The Andre Fabre-trained colt was headed in the final stages by Nighttime (Wootton Bassett) but fought back gamely under Alexis Pouchin to claim the Group 3 contest by a short neck. Elastic (Lope De Vega) was third, another two and a half lengths away. A homebred for Godolphin out of Group 1-winning juvenile Lyric Of Light (Street Cry), Komorebi became a three-time winner from five starts on Sunday and will now be aimed at Classic glory in the French 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) next month. Pinatubo, who covered 90 mares at Kelvinside last spring, is currently standing at Dalham Hall Stud for £17,500 (approx AU$33,341).

Seven for Protectionist

Late Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) hero Protectionist (Monsun) also sired his seventh individual stakes winner when New Emerald (5 g ex Nouvelle Gorl, by Soldier Hollow) landed Sunday’s Kalkmann-Fruhjahrs-Meile (Gr 3, 1600m) at Dusseldorf. Trained by Marcel Weiss, the five-year-old was resolute in the heavy conditions under Sibylle Vogt, scorching home to score by a half-length over Best Lightning (Sidestep) with Next Mine (Dabirsim) another length back in third. Bred and raced by Stall Emerald, New Emerald is out of Nouvelle Gorl (Soldier Hollow), herself a half-sister to last year’s German Oaks (Gr 1, 2200m) winner Nicoreni (Brametot).

26 for Lope De Vega

Ballylinch Stud sire Lope De Vega (Shamardal) was handed his 26th individual Group/Grade 1 winner when his daughter Expensive Queen (5 m ex Witches Brew, by Duke Of Marmalade) took out the Jenny Wiley Stakes (Gr 1, 8.5f) in a dead heat finish at Keeneland on Saturday. The Brendan Walsh-trained mare could not be separated from last-start Matriarch Stakes (Gr 1, 8f) winner Segesta (Ghostzapper) after a thrilling stretch duel, while Medoro (Honour Code) finished another three quarters of a length behind in third. Bred in Ireland by Fermoir and owned by Farfellow Farms, Expensive Queen is a sister to both Group 3 winner Antonia De Vega and the stakes-placed Luckin Brew out of Witches Brew (Duke Of Marmalade) – herself a half-sister to Group 1 winner Al Wukair (Dream Ahead). Lope De Vega is standing for a fee of €200,000 (approx. AU$331,800).

12 for Not This Time

Claret Beret (5 m ex Bessie M, by Medallist) gave her Taylor Made Stallions sire Not This Time his 12th individual top-flight winner when she landed Saturday’s Apple Blossom Handicap (Gr 1, 8.5f) at Oaklawn Park. Trained by Saffie A Joseph Jr, the mare put on an impressive display, scoring by four and a half lengths over favourite Nitrogen (Medaglia d'Oro) with Majestic Oops (Majestic Harbor) another three and three-quarter lengths adrift in third. Bred by Mitch Haynes, Claret Beret sold for $375,000 at the 2022 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. Not This Time is standing for a fee of US$250,000 (approx. AU$353,900).
