The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice) has taken the next step in his exhilarating evolution as a sire, with his coronation as Arrowfield Stud’s flagbearing stallion in the farm’s service fees for 2026.

Boasting probably the best horse in the country in Autumn Glow and crack three-year-old Autumn Boy amongst his five Group 1 winners, The Autumn Sun will stand for a carefully chosen $137,500 (all fees inc GST).

What's On

That’s more than double his mark from his past five standing seasons of $66,000, after his debut spring at $77,000.

As the famed stud’s No.1, the rising 11-year-old follows in the footsteps of previous greats of Arrowfield and of Australian breeding including Snitzel and his sire Redoute’s Choice, and the legendary Danehill (Danzig).

Snitzel would have been the Hunter Valley farm’s top-priced stallion last spring at $247,500 but for his death in June, which hasn’t stopped him charging towards a fifth champion sire title this season. His demise left the $88,000 Dundeel (High Chaparral) as Arrowfield’s most expensive sire of 2025, with The Autumn Sun second.

But now, after a slightly nervous start when it was eventually proven his stock would be better at three than two, The Autumn Sun gains a service fee ranking to underline his standing as one of the most exciting stallions in the land. He’s also more than double the price of Arrowfield’s No.2 Dundeel, who drops to $66,000.

Arrowfield chairman John Messara said The Autumn Sun’s fee increase was a reflection of “a special type of stallion”, and one the stud assessed as “as a very significant sire for this part of the world”.

“This horse has left a very, very outstanding colt, probably the three-year-old colt of the season, in Autumn Boy, and a champion filly and mare in Autumn Glow,” Messara told ANZ News. “And then there’s all the other things he’s done before that.

“He’s given us an insight into what he’s capable of doing. He’s likely to finish top three or four on the general sires table, with half the runners of those around him.”

With only four crops racing, The Autumn Sun sits third on that table, less than $24,000 behind reigning champion Zoustar (Northern Meteor). And this comes from only 164 runners compared with the 328 of Zoustar, the 252 of Snitzel, and the 286 of the fourth-placed I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit).

In a telling statistic, among The Autumn Sun’s 11 stakes winners worldwide at 4.68 per cent of runners, five have scored at the top level, with three-timer Autumn Glow and dual Guineas hero Autumn Boy sitting alongside Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Autumn Angel, South Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) victor Coco Sun, and Australasian Oaks (Gr 1, 2000m) winner Vibrant Sun.

“When he gets a good one he gets a proper one. He’s a special type of stallion,” Messara said. “If we look after him and mate him carefully, things can only head one way.

“We’re not sure where he’ll finish on the sires’ list this season, because he’s got far less runners than the other stallions up the top. He may finish third or fourth, but it’ll be an outstanding result given the number of runners he’s got. And he hasn’t finished yet.”

There’s a fair bit of work in progress for him, and this new figure is not going to be ultimately his fee in due course, so I think he represents pretty decent value at the moment

John Messara

The Autumn Sun’s yearlings this year have sold for an average of $254,000, up from $185,000 in 2025.

Given his progress and the current stallion market, The Autumn Sun probably could have been put as high as $175,000 this spring and few would have argued.

However, Messara said his hike to $137,500 was in keeping with Arrowfield’s usual policy.

“I think we’ve priced him quite fairly,” he said. “The expectation was his fee might be higher than that, but we like to go up in a more gradual manner. We’re conservative on that until the horse actually does perform over time.

“I had an old friend on the board at Arrowfield who’d say, ‘Never cut the string’. When you increase the price of a stallion, you don’t want to lose those who’ve supported you earlier. You want them to come along for the ride and you want the new ones to jump on board as well.

“By not rising too steeply, you try to keep faith with the breeders who’ve supported you previously. That’s the philosophy we’ve generally followed.

“There’s a fair bit of work in progress for him, and this new figure is not going to be ultimately his fee in due course, so I think he represents pretty decent value at the moment.”

The Autumn Sun was forced out of the 2024 breeding season due to a fracture in his pelvis, but bounced back powerfully last spring, covering a career-high 178 mares.

Messara said this included “a lot of very good, high-quality mares”, giving the stud “a lot to look forward to” from the stallion. He’s also expecting a strong finish to the current season.

“I know there are a few decent ones brewing around the place at the moment who’ll be rearing their heads at the Queensland carnival,” he said. “We’re very bullish about him.”

Dundeel represented “really good value” at a reduced $66,000, Messara said, following a racing season in which he’s added a tenth elite winner in ATC Queen Of The Turf Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) victor Idle Flyer.

Dundeel (Credit: Arrowfield)

Matt Smith’s mare has continued a recent surge from Dundeel’s daughters. While his early bidding was carried out mostly by sons including current boom sires Castelvecchio - his Arrowfield barnmate - and Super Seth, his daughters, though previously maligned mostly on temperament charges, have accounted for 12 of Dundeel’s past 14 stakes victories.

The rising 17-year-old Dundeel - who has 40 stakes winners at a healthy 5.43 per cent of runners - covered 103 mares last spring in his second year at $88,000, down from 141 in 2024. His yearlings have averaged $210,000 in 2026, up from $186,000 last year, with a top price of $1.3 million at Inglis Easter for a filly out of Fiesta (I Am Invincible) bought by Coolmore.

“We’ve wound him down a touch, to make him really great value,” Messara said. “He’s very good value now amongst proven stallions. He’s got ten individual Group 1 winners, plus two very successful sons at stud in Castelvecchio and Super Seth.

Castelvecchio (Credit: Arrowfield)

“So he offers you the chance of a good colt or a good filly, and they will stay a bit, so they have the chance of training on.

“People have said in the past that he gets good colts but not fillies, but that’s changed now. People are learning more about how to train them [his fillies]. If you get trainers who are adaptable to changing their training techniques to suit the particular pedigrees, types and characters of some of these horses, you get a different result.

“By the time he’s finished breeding, I guarantee his colts and fillies will finish level.”

The aforementioned Catelvecchio was “a sire on the make”, Messara said, with runners such as star triple Group 1-winning mare Aeliana among his six stakes winners from three crops racing at 5.08 per cent of runners.

After serving a career-high 155 mares last year at a fee bumped from $22,000 to $49,500, he rises again this spring to $60,500.

“He’s one of our most popular horses at the moment in the sale ring and in bookings,” Messara said of the rising ten-year-old, whose yearlings have averaged $159,000 this year - with a career-best of $600,000 for one colt - up from $84,000 in 2025.

“He’s capable of getting an outstanding animal, such as Aeliana, and I’ve got a lot of hope in him.

“He’s had a slightly uneven start to life, with a couple of minor setbacks which meant he missed a bit of service time, but he’s in full swing now, getting good service, and last year was the best book he’s ever had.”

Messara speaks with great excitement about the near future for Arrowfield’s Japanese shuttler Maurice (Screen Hero). After covering 123 mares last year at $55,000 - down from 138 at the same figure in 2024 after peaking at $82,500 in 2022 and ‘23 - Maurice will this year stand for $44,000.

The rising 15-year-old began with a bang in Australia, particularly through the five stakes winners in 2022-23 which helped him to his best-yet finish of 15th on the general sires’ table. After a quieter subsequent two seasons, he’s recovered to currently sit 23rd, with sprinter Mazu last Saturday showing his stock’s durability with his third successive Hall Mark Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) victory, aged seven.

Maurice, whose 4.26 per cent stakes winners to runners ratio in Australia betters his global mark of 3.66 per cent, has averaged $140,000 at the yearling sales this year, off a 2025 figure of $197,000.

But Messara is confident he’s about to make some impressive waves on the track.

“His progeny that are about to turn three, and those who’ll turn three next year, come from the best two books he’s had in his career,” Messara said.

“While he doesn’t do a lot with his two-year-olds, he does a lot with his three-year-olds and up, and he’s going to have a flurry of stakes winners in the next 12 months, given the size and quality of the books of mares involved.

“Breeders will have very good follow-up if they breed to him this year. His fee is very commercial, and there are a lot of stakes winners coming.”

Arrowfield’s seven stallions include two European shuttlers in Vandeek (Havana Grey) - at an unchanged $22,000 after serving a maximum 151 mares in his first Australian season - and newcomer Lead Artist (Dubawi), at $27,500.

Messara expects the “high class” outcross speed stallion Vandeek to prove popular again.

But the impeccably bred Lead Artist - winner of an exceptionally rich edition of Newbury’s Lockinge Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) - is causing Messara particular excitement, as he seeks to ride the clamour for Dubawi (Dubai Millennium) blood in Australia stirred by his boom shuttling sons Too Darn Hot and Ghaiyyath.

I haven’t been this excited about a stallion since Danehill

John Messara

“He’s by Dubawi out of a Frankel mare - the two most expensive sires in Europe,” Messara said.

“It’s just a pedigree that’s got terrific pre-potency on both sides, plus he’s a great looking horse. Subsequent to us getting him, a lot of European breeders have told me we’re on the right one.

“I haven’t been this excited about a stallion since Danehill.”

Rounding out Arrowfield’s septet is Hitotsu (Maurice), hero of the VRC and Australian derbies and a Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) besides. After covering 97 mares at $22,000 last spring, and with his first crop of yearlings averaging $87,000, the rising eight-year-old will stand this year for $16,500.

“His yearlings have been really well received this year,” Messara said. “We’re backing our product there. He’s a cheapie, but one with a very good chance.”

Per Incanto continues his rise for Little Avondale

Per Incanto (Credit: Little Avondale Stud)

Per Incanto (Street Cry) will stand for an elevated service fee of $75,000 (plus GST) at Little Avondale Stud in 2026, with the $15,000 increase on last year’s figure reflective of his remarkable record both on the racetrack and in the sales ring.

Given Per Incanto’s advancing age and his importance to Little Avondale, proprietor Sam Williams is keen to ensure the longevity of the farm’s flagbearer and so this year he will only serve a limited book of mares at the Masterton property alongside his son and fellow resident Little Brose, whose opening fee of $15,000 (plus GST) remains unchanged for his second season.

After starting from humble beginnings with an introductory service fee of $4,000, Per Incanto has steadily risen through New Zealand’s stallion ranks and is now firmly established in the upper echelons, having produced nine individual Group 1 winners on both sides of the Tasman Sea.

Jimmysstar became his sire’s most successful elite-level performer when he claimed his third Group 1 as the odds-on favourite in the C.F. Orr Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield last spring, in the process taking his prize-money tally past the $8 million mark.

Jimmysstar’s feats, allied to the remarkable consistency of his stakes-winning stablemate Gringotts, have helped Per Incanto climb into the top five of the Australian Sires’ Premiership, with Williams quick to point out that the rising 23-year-old boasts an unrivalled strike-rate among his peers.

“Per Incanto is currently fifth on the Australian Sires’ Premiership and the only sire in the top 20 with a runner-to-winner percentage over 50 per cent,” said Williams, who operates the famed farm in partnership with his wife, Dame Catriona Williams.

“Three-time Group 1 winner Jimmysstar has been his flagship performer, and he’s had five stakes winners this season and another five stakes placed.

“He’s also had three individual black-type two-year-olds, Eurocanto won the first juvenile stakes race in Victoria when he claimed the Listed Maribyrnong Trial Stakes. In addition, Oak Lightning ran second in the Listed Redoute’s Choice Stakes and Spellbound was third in the Listed Challenge Stakes.”

Per Incanto’s sales returns in 2026 also make for impressive reading, with his five yearlings having averaged $371,000 at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale – highlighted by the $675,000 sale of his colt out of Bridgewater (Written Tycoon).

Across the entire sales season, Per Incanto’s 32 yearlings averaged in excess of $165,000, giving breeders ample opportunity to make a significant profit on his service fee.

Williams was rightly proud of those figures, and he also lauded the highly promising start Little Brose has made to his stud career.

“Little Brose covered 140 mares last year and is super fertile with 129 of them in foal,” Williams said.

“He was supported by the vast majority of all the leading breeders in New Zealand, so we couldn’t have been happier with the welcome he received and the quality of mares he attracted.

“His Street Cry bloodline is dominant in Australia at the moment through Street Boss and Per Incanto. Their popularity and commercial success were further highlighted recently when Street Boss’ Group 1-winning son Tentyris was retired and will stand at an introductory fee of AU$88,000.”

Morning Briefing

Brownes Kick up for their maiden filly in the Oaks

A timely pedigree update could be just the ticket for connections of Just Kick (Staphanos) as the filly aims to break her maiden in style in Saturday’s Australasian Oaks (Gr 1, 2000m). Just Kick remains winless after eight starts but has four minor placings to her name, including a third behind Highvol (Microphone) in last year’s Anzac Day Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at Flemington. Co-trainer Emma-Lee Browne expressed frustration that the three-year-old is yet to shed her maiden status, but the stable were happy to take their chances in Group 1 company given the filly’s form of late. This preparation, Just Kick has finished fourth to the Oaks favourite Getta Good Feeling (So You Think) in the Alexandra Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) at Caulfield, before running third over 1700 metres at the same venue behind smart filly Savitri (So You Think) – who also lines up at Morphettville on Saturday. “She’s been a very unlucky maiden,” Emma-Lee, who trains in partnership with her husband David, said. “I thought her run last time was super, she hit the line really well and that gave us the confidence to go up in distance.” Browne revealed June’s Queensland Oaks (Gr 1, 2200m) at Eagle Farm remains a possibility, but if she could add another black type placing to her page, connections may be tempted to cash in at the Inglis Chairman’s Sale on May 7. “She’s already got some black type, but it would be lovely if she could get a big one on her record,” said Browne. “If she could win on Saturday, I think that could make the trip to the Chairman’s Sale worth it.” Harry Coffey will ride Just Kick for the first time on Saturday, with the pair set to jump from barrier 12.

Benedetta back to her happy hunting ground

Benedetta (Credit: Sportpix)

The Ciaron Maher stable will see Benedetta (Hellbent) line up in Saturday’s Robert Sangster Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m). The mare, who will be up for auction at the Inglis Chairman’s sale next month, made her elite-level breakthrough in The Goodwood (Gr 1, 1200m) the last time she visited Adelaide’s premier course. Benedetta has not visited the winner’s circle since that victory in 2024 for her former trainer Jason Warren, but she has been stakes-placed on three occasions. The most recent of those placings came behind the recently retired colt Tentyris (Street Boss) in the Black Caviar Lightning (Gr 1, 1000m) at Flemington, and if she can replicate that performance Maher’s assistant trainer Jack Turnbull believes the mare’s pre-post odds of $11 might represent excellent each-way value. “She’s been beaten around that two-length margin in Group 1s by some very good horses, and one of them was under handicap conditions,” said Turnbull. “We feel she’s going super, she just needs to get in the right spot at the right time and as we know, she’s good enough. There are no faults with her from our end, she just needs a bit of luck. There is some frustration as she hasn’t won for a little while, but you look at her form and she’s giving everyone a thrill in some big races. You would love to see her add another Group 1 to her page to show she has got longevity as a racing prospect for breeders. She has been solid for us, and hopefully she can get another victory.” Jamie Melham, who was onboard in the Lightning, is reunited with Benedetta with the pair set to jump from barrier four.

Rosberg racing for his future as a colt

Rosberg (Deep Field) will be given one last chance to prove that he can fulfil his potential as a colt in this Saturday’s Tobin Bronze Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Morphettville. The enigmatic three-year-old burst onto the scene with a pulsating win in the McKenzie Stakes (Listed, 1200m) last spring, but two subsequent efforts have suggested that his mind may not be entirely on the job. However, before resorting to the ultimate gear change, trainer Clinton McDonald wanted to give the untapped colt a final opportunity to showcase his undoubted talent on raceday. “He’s still a colt, but this is his last chance,” McDonald told Racing.com. ‘’He’s an enigma, that’s for sure. He’s a horse that’s just got that much talent, it’s sickening. But there’s no point being good here at Cranbourne and not good on raceday. So we’ve changed a few things around with him and done a bit of gear change. His work’s been terrific, but I am not going to say anything more – I am just going to let the horse do the talking on Saturday.” Jamie Melham takes the ride on Rosberg, who will press onto The Goodwood if he can turn his form around on Saturday.

Howley feels St Leger test perfect for Valiant Sun

Kyneton-based trainer Liam Howley feels that Saturday's VRC St Leger (Listed, 2800m) is the ideal test for his three-year-old Valiant Sun (The Autumn Sun). The 2800-metre Listed contest takes place at Flemington and lines up off the back of a fourth placing in the Galilee Series Final (Listed, 2400m) at Caulfield – his first run at stakes level. "I've always looked at him like he was going to stay a long way," Howley said. "He's lacked that turn of foot but he's slowly developing a little bit of speed about him. He can run time, but he's got to build through the gears and the whole way through, the Leger has been the main goal. If he had shown a bit more speed along the way, maybe he could have been a Derby horse, but I think in his past two runs at a mile-and-a-half, every bit of the trip is important. Caulfield last time, he drew well, but the track played against us, but I still thought he ran very well and the bigger track at Flemington should suit him. I thought we'd step up quickly rather than go a mile, mile, 2000 metres. There weren't enough options and he's a natural stayer, so I thought let's get him out to his comfort zone, and every time we've raised the bar, he's stepped up."

Derby winner looking for positive return

Last season's Queensland Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Maison Louis (Super Seth) will head to Randwick on Saturday as he bids to get back to winning form in the First Australian Imperial Force Handicap (1500m). The John O'Shea and Tom Charlton-trained gelding has managed a best-placed third in the Hill Stakes (Gr 2, 1900m) in four starts since his Derby win last June, and drops back to handicap grade with 60.5 kilograms from barrier 12. "His form just tailed off a bit after starting really well," Charlton said of Maison Louis' spring preparation. "We gave him a bit of time, so he will resume on Saturday, and he can work towards races over a bit further in Sydney and maybe Queensland. He has a bit of weight so we're just looking for a positive first-up run and he may go to a Gosford Cup or something like that second-up."

Impressive Marsept a maiden no more

Team Hawkes’ stakes-placed filly Marsept (Written Tycoon) cruised to a dominant win as the $1.30 favourite at Geelong’s mid-week metropolitan meeting on Wednesday. The $300,000 yearling purchase had finished second behind exciting filly Extragalactic (Deep Field) first-up at Caulfield at the start of the month, and she duly went one better in the hands of Jye McNeil on Wednesday afternoon. Punters who had taken the prohibitive odds were given few causes for concern, as Marsept swept into the lead under hands and heels before prevailing by 3.3 lengths over Varadero (Star Witness). After placing at Listed level behind Lindsay Park’s Shining Smile (Spirit Of Boom) on debut as a juvenile at Flemington last year, the filly failed to score during her second campaign in the spring but she has seemingly thrived since returning from her summer spell. “She’s a Saturday class filly, not a maidener, but you know what, it’s always good to get the maiden out of the way,” co-trainer Wayne Hawkes told Racing.com. “Nothing really went wrong [last prep], she just didn’t seem to come up. This time she’s just been going gangbusters. Caulfield the other day, you’ve got a maiden trying to take on the more experienced horses, and it took a smart one to actually beat her. That’s how you want $1.30 pops to win – it was trackwork, to be honest.”

Private Harry warms up for comeback race

Private Harry (Credit: Sportpix)

A race day gallop at Canterbury has Private Harry (Harry Angel) in good order ahead of the Victory Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Eagle Farm next month. The Group 1-winning four-year-old was ridden by Ash Morgan in the workout and covered the 1000 metres in 1:06.53, clocking 36.29 seconds for his final 600 metres. Yulong's entire will be making his first start for Chris Waller in the Victory Stakes, which comes on Saturday week, and Morgan was happy with the piece of work. "I was happy with him. It has been a long time since I've sat on him, but he did it all well," Morgan said. "He was in a nice, relaxed manner. He pulled up through his gears well and I thought he moved well and did everything right. He's in good order and his action was good. He had a little bit of a blow pulling up, but he'd recovered by the time we got back to the yard. He is spot-on for first-up. It was a nice call to get. Special horse to me. It's good to be back on him and it was good to get a sit on him again. Hopefully he's back to his best."

Melbourne Cup regular Precedence dies

Champion rider Craig Williams has paid tribute to Precedence (Zabeel) following the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) regular’s death at the age of 20. Trained by the legendary Bart Cummings, Precedence ran in the Melbourne Cup on four occasions, finishing in the first 11 home in all four of those attempts - his best being a sixth placing in his final attempt in 2014. Precedence earned over $2 million in prize-money across his career after, scoring ten wins from 69 starts, including wins in the 2010 and 2013 Moonee Valley Cup (Gr 2, 2500m), the latter in which he was ridden by Williams. A social media post by the jockey read: "I'm saddened by the news of the passing of Precedence. He was courageous and competitive on the racetrack and in the show arena. He was a horse that excelled in everything he performed in. Thinking of all whose lives he touched, especially his post race carers."

White Robe release fees for Alflaila and Ancient Spirit

Alflaila (Credit: White Robe Lodge)

White Robe Lodge stallions Alflaila (Dark Angel) and Ancient Spirit (Invincible Spirit) have both been announced to be standing at $7,000 (plus GST) this breeding season.

Alflaila heads into his second season at White Robe Lodge after a strong debut year, where the multiple Group 2 winner proved popular with breeders, covering 110 mares.

He represents the first influence of the outstanding Dark Angel (Acclamation) sire-line to stand in New Zealand, offering breeders access to one of Europe’s most in-demand bloodlines.

“We were overwhelmed by the first-year support of Alflaila. It’s the biggest book we've had for a stallion in 15 years,” White Robe Lodge’s Jack Stewart said.

“Breeders from all around the country have sent mares and a lot of those mares have been booked in again this year.

“We encourage anyone who's in the area to come out and have a look at him as he’s a stunning type and if the foals look anything like he does, then breeders won’t be disappointed.”

While the first foals of Alflaila are keenly anticipated this spring, associate sire Ancient Spirit has made a promising start to his stud career, with his eldest progeny three-year-olds.

Stakes winner Bobby McGee headlines his early runners, while Golden Spirit has also gained black-type, and the young stallion was represented by impressive debut winner Arwen.

The well-bred son of Invincible Spirit (Green Desert) was also represented by emerging staying filly Fly Zenno, who has shown her quality in strong company, including a solid fourth in the David & Karyn Ellis Fillies Classic (Gr 2, 2100m) at Te Rapa behind subsequent dual Group 1 winner Ohope Wins (Ocean Park).

“We always thought they'd be horses that would get better with time, and they’re certainly showing a bit now,” Stewart said.

“The word from the trainers is positive that they will continue to progress into strong staying types.

“We've got plenty of them here ourselves, both on the farm and in the racing stable [Brian and Shane Anderton]. He’s on the right trajectory and there is plenty of interest in them as trade horses to Australia, given their ability to get out over a bit of ground.”

Te Akau targeting feature race riches

Te Akau Racing will hunt a black type bonanza at a trio of venues over the coming days with Zantabulous (Almanzor) set to kick off their challenge on Friday in her first taste of stakes company. The Mark Walker and Sam Bergerson-trained mare bids to build on some excellent efforts in lower grade when she lines up in the Anzac Handicap (Listed, 1600m). At Te Rapa on Saturday, Qali Al Farrasha (Almanzor) goes for Group 2 glory in the Travis Stakes (2000m), while stablemates Drops Of God (Hello Youmzain), King’s English (Snitzel) and Avantaggia (Wootton Bassett) are all set to contest the Windsor Park Stud Cambridge Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m). On the South Island, What You Wish For (Embellish) leads the charge in the Canterbury Gold Cup (Gr 3, 2000m) at Riccarton Park, Aishiteru (Satono Aladdin) and Perlino (Super Seth) are scheduled to compete in the New Zealand Bloodstock Warstep Stakes (Listed, 2000m) and Trobriand (Kermadec) tackles the Great Easter Stakes (1400m). Zantabulous has been in fine fettle this campaign with victory in the Waikato Gold Cup (1600m) complemented by a trio of minor placings, including a most recent runner-up finish behind the subsequent Easter Handicap (Gr 3, 1600m) winner Lupo Solitario (Satono Aladdin). “She’s always been talented, but has unfortunately had a few setbacks along the way,” Bergerson said. “The Lupo Solitario form looks very good now, and she gets through rain-affected going. It would be a great reward for the owners’ patience, she’s certainly tested that at times and it would be a fantastic result if she can get some black type.”

End of an era for Haunui and Frantic as mares offered online

Three proven broodmares will be offered next month on Gavelhouse Plus, marking the end of a highly successful breeding and racing partnership that has spanned 20 years. Following the dissolution of the partnership between Haunui Farm and Frantic Bloodstock, Rondinella (Ocean Park) and Sudbina (Almanzor) – who are both in foal to Coolmore’s big-money recruit Super Seth (Dundeel) – will be put up for auction alongside Tinnelly (O’Reilly). With Frantic Bloodstock proprietor Cathy Franich deciding to focus exclusively on her racing portfolio, the decision was taken to test the mares’ value on the open market. “It’s the end of an era,” Haunui Farm’s managing director Mark Chitty said. “We’ve had a really successful racing and breeding partnership that started all the way back in 2006. There’s obviously mixed feelings with it being the end of an era, but it gives buyers an exciting opportunity to secure these three lovely mares. Rondinella and Sudbina are both in foal to Super Seth, and with everything that’s happened with him this year, we thought the best way to handle things is to take these mares to the marketplace. The mares all have 2025 foals that will head through to the Karaka yearling sales in January of 2027.” Rondinella has made an exceptional start to her career in the breeding barn, with her first foal He Who Dares (Snitzel) selling to Te Akau’s David Ellis for $825,000 in Book 1 at Karaka in 2024. The colt has already earned his purchase fee back from a nine-start career that has yielded multiple stakes placings – including in the NZB Kiwi (Listed, 1500m). The auction of the three mares will be held from May 13 to 20 on Gavelhouse Plus.

HK: Masquerade Ball ready for QEII Cup clash with Romantic Warrior

Masquerade Ball (Credit: HKJC)

Christophe Lemaire believes Masquerade Ball (Duramente), his mount in Sunday’s QEII Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) at Sha Tin, has the potential to rank among the greats. Lemaire, who has partnered legends like Almond Eye (Lord Kanaloa) and Equinox (Kitasan Black) in his time riding in Japan, retains the utmost faith in the Tenno Sho Autumn (Gr 1, 2000m) winner as he makes his first run since finishing an agonising runner-up in the Japan Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) in November. The jockey said: “He’s still a young horse. Last year, in the first Classics, he ran well, but maybe was not mature enough to win. From the autumn, he showed that he improved and he was tougher. I think he still has some improvement to come this year. When you consider his performances last year and that he can improve as a four-year-old, we can say he has the potential to be one of the greats in Japanese racing.” It is a bold statement from the rider, who has ridden Masquerade Ball in only his last two races. The colt, who is trained by leading handler Takahisa Tezuka, has clearly made an outstanding impression and has a range of top attributes. “I got a very good feeling in the Tenno Sho, especially in the last two furlongs where he used a powerful stride to win the race,” Lemaire said. “The pace was slow and I had to put him under a little pressure, so that’s why I was very confident in the Japan Cup over a mile and a half, which I think is his best trip. In the Tenno Sho, he showed a lot of class and nice acceleration. It will be a tough task to beat a horse like Romantic Warrior running on his home ground. Racing is all about pace and it will depend on what happens. My horse has the stamina, as we saw in the Japan Cup, so if the pace is strong I think it will help.”

HK: In-form Newnham on a Champions Mile mission

Trainer Mark Newnham bids to build on his breakout season in Hong Kong by landing another Group 1 win with either My Wish (Flying Artie) or Invincible Ibis (Hellbent) in the Champions Mile (Gr 1, 1600m). Having already saddled up the winner of the region’s premier race when Invincible Ibis swept to Hong Kong Derby (Listed, 2000m) glory under fellow Australian Hugh Bowman, Newnham has his sights set on claiming another prestigious prize at Sha Tin this Sunday. Invincible Ibis, who built fitness with a barrier trial outing last week, will be partnered by James McDonald after Bowman opted to take the ride on My Wish, a last-start runner-up behind Lucky Sweynesse (Sweynesse) in the Chairman’s Trophy (Gr 2, 1600m). Newnham, who is firmly in contention to win the Hong Kong trainers’ premiership this season, is struggling to split the pair ahead of Champions Day. “My Wish was good last start, he only just got beaten, and Invincible Ibis has been good all season,” Newnham said. “He saved his best for the Derby and ran a record time. We have two great jockeys and both horses should run well. This will probably be My Wish’s last run for the season, although there is one more race that could suit him. Invincible Ibis’ form is very similar to My Wish last year. My Wish was beaten a head in the Derby then ran fourth in the Champions Mile before he went for a spell. He came back later in the year and ran in the International Mile, and I’m hoping we can get both horses back for the International meeting in December.”

UK: Dwyer goes to €205,000 to secure St Mark’s Basilica filly

Ballarat-based trainer Henry Dwyer could have another runner added to his Royal Ascot team after purchasing a St Mark’s Basilica (Siyouni) filly for €205,000 (approx. AU$335,570) during Wednesday’s second and final session of the Goffs Doncaster Breeze-Up Sale. Dwyer, who will have stable star Asfoora (Flying Artie) go for a second King Charles III Stakes (Gr 1, 5f) victory during June’s royal meeting, teamed up with Hamish Macauley Bloodstock to purchase the filly out of Innishannon Valley Stud. The filly is out of the unraced Camelot (Montjeu) mare Zasha, who herself is out of the Listed-winning mare Zero Gravity (Dansili) – the dam of 2024 Champion 3YO Filly and last year’s Champion Older Mare Kalpana (Study Of Man).

ANZ News

One of the great blue hens of modern breeding has come to the fore again with a first-time black type winner in Snitzel Dancer (Snitzel), who took out Saturday’s James H B Carr Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) at Randwick.

It was a stellar last day of the Randwick carnival for the late, great, general sires’ table leader Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) and his former trainer Gerald Ryan.

The four-time - and likely soon to be five-time - champion sire had three stakes winners and Ryan trained two of them, back-to-back, with Snitzel Dancer’s victory followed by Matias’s in the Frank Packer Plate (Gr 3, 2000m). Fireball finished Snitzel’s hat-trick by becoming his 28th elite winner in the Champagne Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m).

Ryan, who these days trains with Sterling Alexiou, has prospered from many trips back to his old sprinter’s well. He’s had 17 stakes winners by Snitzel - whom he trained to six stakes successes from 2004-06 including Caulfield’s Oakleigh Plate (Gr 1, 1100m) - and he and his co-trainer have been rewarded for paying $425,000 for Snitzel Dancer at Inglis Easter in 2024.

The Hunter Valley’s progressive Sledmere Stud bred the filly, having bought her dam Novel Dancer (Written Tycoon) off the track, in a private deal helped along by bloodstock agent Sheamus Mills.

Trained by Shea Eden, who’d bought her as a yearling for $50,000, Novel Dancer made an explosive start, winning at Echuca by six lengths on debut, claiming a Mornington two-year-old fillies’ handicap by 3.75 lengths, and earning black type when third in Caulfield’s Quezette Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) at start three.

After that her form tapered off as she finished no better than sixth in six more tries before connections opted to sell.

However, that didn’t deter Sledmere’s Catriona and Royston Murphy, who swiftly secured the mare.

“I love a Written Tycoon mare,” Catriona tells It’s In The Blood of Yulong’s evergreen stallion, who’s had 13 stakes winners as a broodmare sire at 3.69 per cent of runners.

“Written Tycoon mares are just beautifully balanced mares, they throw good types, and being an outcross mare that was what we were looking for. It’s so hard to find them. There’s a lot of Danehill in our industry, and a lot of Redoute’s Choice mares, Fastnet Rock mares, Exceed And Excel mares, all by Danehill.

“So to find an outcross mare was a big tick for Novel Dancer.

“The fact her form had dropped off a bit didn’t put us off. She’d done what she could do and that was good enough for what we were looking for. Any black type is a positive.”

There was one other major drawcard. Well, two in fact. Novel Dancer came with a double-up of the great, highly influential American 1960s mare Best In Show (Traffic Judge).

The dam of nine winners from 12 runners, including four stakes victors, her blood runs strongly into Written Tycoon’s (Iglesia) sireline, as the second dam of his third sire Try My Best (Northern Dancer), through her also very useful daughter Sex Appeal (Buckpasser).

And Best In Show is in another handy spot as the third dam of New Zealand stallion Umatilla (Miswaki), Novel Dancer’s second damsire.

With the super mare also running powerfully into Snitzel as his sire Redoute’s Choice’s fourth dam, this gives Snitzel Dancer a triple presence of Best In Show at 6f x 7f, 7f, through two different daughters.

Her presence also affects the only piece of inbreeding Snitzel Dancer has - a 4f x 5m of Best In Show’s highly influential granddaughter Dancing Show (Nijinksy), who is Redoute’s Choice’s granddam and the mother of Umatilla.

“Those blue hens or elite stallions doubling up can only be a positive,” Murphy says. “Novel Dancer having Best In Show twice - there wouldn't be too many pedigrees around that have that elite duplication, and having Dancing Show twice in the first five generations has to help.

“We’ve had a lot of faith in this mare and it’s nice when your hard work pays off.”

Closer to home, Snitzel Dancer is underlaid with strong colonial notes thanks to one of Australia’s greatest sires, Star Kingdom (Stardust), the Irish-bred phenom who makes six appearances in the pedigree from generations seven to nine.

Only one comes in Snitzel’s half, as the fourth sire of Redoute’s Choice’s own blue hen dam Shantha’s Choice, through Biscay-Bletchingly-Canny Lad.

But that’s blended with a well varied five spots feeding into Novel Dancer. Star Kingdom is tripled in the dam of Written Tycoon’s sire Iglesia (Last Tycoon), with Biscay completing a duplication, this time via his son Marscay, alongside Noholme and the only Star Kingdom daughter in the pedigree, Fairy Dream, Iglesia’s fifth dam.

And lower down, Star Kingdom is doubled in Novel Dancer’s Aussie speed-oriented damsire Strategic (Zeditave), via Kaoru Star and Todman.

While we don’t see that coveted blend of Biscay with one or more of his full-brothers Star Of Heaven and Tattenham, the inclusion of two other Star Kingdom full-brothers Todman and Noholme should only be a good thing, especially with Star Kingdom also in the top half.

“I love a lot of those old families, going back to those sorts of stallions,” Murphy says. “They’re getting a bit further away, and the new fancy stuff is coming in, but I don’t think you can beat the old fashioned families.”

Snitzel Dancer is also helped by a successful female line. Melbourne city-winning second dam Strata Title (Strategic) was twice Listed placed, while fourth dam Rockettes (Lord Seymour) won on that tier at Flemington and was a half-sister to the superb Rom’s Stiletto (Sharp Edge).

Incidentally, Rom’s Stiletto claimed the 1982 Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m)-VRC Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m) double, yet that was enough to only rank her third on the Australasian 3YO Classification.

She was unlucky enough to have been born in the same spring as another grey filly - Emancipation (Bletchingly) - while New Zealand’s Our Flight (Imperial Guard) polled second after taking the NZ Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) and NZ 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m).

In fact, it was a vintage season for three-year-olds all up, which is worth reminiscing about. The boys were represented by Strawberry Road (Whiskey Road) and his fellow eventual six-time Group 1 winner Mr McGinty (or McGinty in NZ) (One Pound Sterling), and three-timers Grosvenor (Sir Tristram) and Veloso (Zamazaan).

But nostalgia ain’t what it used to be.

Jump to 2015, and once the Murphys secured Novel Dancer, they looked around for a stallion for her first mating. They hit on a first-season sire, and it is to their - and Novel Dancer’s - enduring credit that they managed to draw a stakes winner out of great racehorse and dud sire Dissident (Sebring). That horse was Pancho, who won two Listeds including the Kilmore Cup (1600m).

In fact, among Dissident’s five stakes winners Sledmere has bred two, the other being close to his best performer in dual Group 2-winning filly Yes Baby Yes.

The road since hasn’t always been easy with Novel Dancer, with her 11 Australian matings yielding just five named foals.

But all of them have been winners. The first and the latest - Pancho and Snitzel Dancer - are stakes winners, and two in between have won in city class, in Troika (Russian Revolution) and Art’s Alive (Snitzel).

BK Racing paid $350,000 for Art’s Alive at Easter 2023, before Ryan and Alexiou went to $425,000 for Snitzel Dancer a year later, a filly who came off a Snitzel service fee of just $165,000, Covid-affected.

“Novel Dancer has never disappointed us with types or sales results,” says Murphy, arguing Snitzel was close to a perfect mating.

“She’s a big strapping mare, with a lot of quality and a lot of room, at about 16.2 hands. That was the other positive about Snitzel, just to refine her and sharpen her up a little bit. He was not overly big but was strong and compact.”

After no live foals in three attempts after Snitzel Dancer’s birth in 2022, the Murphys changed tack last spring by sending Novel Dancer to New Zealand’s Little Avondale Stud for a mating with the young stallion born and reared at Sledmere, and in whom they have a share, Little Brose (Per Incanto).

She’s now in-foal and back home, with the Murphys keeping their fingers crossed for their dual stakes producer.
