Australian Bloodstock bid for another Group 1 with bargain northern hemisphere buy

Accidental Bid (Credit: Racing Photos)

Accidental Bid (Phoenix Of Spain) is a northern hemisphere three-year-old seeking to win Saturday’s South Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) with eerily similar plotlines to the first horse to achieve that remarkable feat, Russian Camelot (Camelot).

Born in Ireland, the Danny O’Brien-trained Russian Camelot came to Australia and won his fourth start at Pakenham by seven lengths. The colt was then ridden by expat Irishman John Allen to his stunning 1.9 length Derby win at Morphettville, after drawing an inside gate.

What's On

Australian Bloodstock’s British-bred Accidental Bid also had his most recent run at Pakenham, and won by 7.8 lengths. Allen was in the saddle and has also been booked for the Derby, where his colt has barrier two.

Russian Camelot started a $2.90 favourite in his 2020 Derby triumph, when he travelled wide but was still far too good, despite being six months younger than his Australian rival stayers.

Accidental Bid is also favourite, at $3.

Only problem is, he still needs to gain a run.

The trouble with having only raced four times - the first two in England - and winning $50,247, is that despite all his exciting potential, Accidental Bid has only qualified as first emergency, outside the maximum 16-horse field for the $1 million Classic.

Though favourite after winning both his Australian starts at Pakenham in a 1600-metre maiden and that Benchmark 62 romp over 2000 metres, the Ciaron Maher-trained colt fell just $8,526 short of the last horse who scraped into the 16, Phillip Stokes’ Wigmore (Sweynesse), who’s a $17 chance.

Maher told ANZ News Accidental Bid would still make the trip from his Cranbourne base to Adelaide - an obvious choice given only one of the 16 horses needs to be scratched up until 7.30am on race day for Accidental Bid to gain a run.

And the master trainer is confident that like present day Widden Stud sire Russian Camelot in 2020, Accidental Bid can again prove the superiority of European over Australian staying blood, though a place in the starting field would be handy.

“I think he’d give it a real shake,” Maher said. “From gate two you’d think he’d be up in the first half-dozen in the field.

“Both of his wins here have been quite dominant and his work’s been very good and improving all the time. The step up in trip is only going to be a benefit to him.

“It’d be ideal if they got a shower of rain, but even on top of the ground I’d still be reasonably confident.”

Forecasters give Morphettville a 60 per cent chance of rain on Saturday between noon and 6pm.

Accidental Bid went into his Australian debut off the back of an eighth and a sixth in his two jump outs. But the stable’s confidence in him was reflected by the fact he jumped as $3.20 favourite, and he won by 0.75 lengths on a Soft 5 track in a field of ten.

Second-up, he was $3.20 favourite again on a Heavy 8, trailed the leader in an eight-horse field, and came away with ridiculous ease under hands-and-heels riding from Allen for a 7.8-length blitz Maher said his data battalion “rated very highly”.

In England, the grey bay was bought at Tattersalls’ October Yearling Sale in 2024 for just 12,000 guineas (around AU$34,000), thanks to - as the story goes - an accidental bid. He debuted late in August with a 0.8-length second over 1609 metres on a good surface at Thirsk, in a two-year-old novice.

That was enough to lead Australian Bloodstock to make a very deliberate bid. As you’d expect, they acquired him without too much trouble, with his original owners perhaps flattered by the interest.

“It wasn’t hard to buy him, put it that way,” Australian Bloodstock director Jamie Lovett told ANZ.

“I’m not sure if I’d say they [his connections] were surprised, but it wasn’t hard to convince them to sell. They didn’t think as much of him as we did.”

So why the interest in a colt who’d run second at lowly Thirsk?

Australian Bloodstock, with Maher, have been involved in several expensive purchases of European stayers. Gold Trip (Outstrip) is the obvious granddaddy of them all, bought for $2.3 million from France before winning the 2022 Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m).

But there is another European field ploughed by Australian Bloodstock, which is where Accidental Bid and a few other bargain buys come in.

“We’ve been trying to do it for a while, just trying to find those northern hemisphere two-year-olds who have a staying pedigree,” Lovett said.

“He certainly presented as the right type of horse to have a throw at the stumps and try to run him in a Derby, whether it be Adelaide or Queensland.

“We’ve had three or four throws like that, and we haven’t got there. Zaphod comes to mind.”

That now five-year-old gelding was bought after a win and a placing in Ireland, has won five of 17 for Kris Lees, and is a dual city winner at Eagle Farm, but hasn’t risen to black type.

“Those three or four have ended up being nice horses but we didn’t get them into a Derby,” Lovett said.

“But Accidental Bid just has a nice profile. He’s got a lovely staying pedigree. His sire can get a nice staying horse, plus the colt has got a bit of depth in the bottom half of his pedigree to suggest he’d stay.”

The ten-year-old sire Phoenix Of Spain (Lope De Vega), who won the Irish 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m), beating Too Darn Hot (Dubawi), stands at the Irish National Stud for €12,500 (AU$20,400). He has seven stakes winners from 159 runners at 4.4 per cent, with four black type victors from 1800 metres and up.

In Australia, Phoenix Of Spain has had exposure lately through Chris Waller’s four-year-old gelding Soul Of Spain, winner of the Newcastle Cup (Gr 3, 2300m) plus three other races, and a last-start runner-up in this month’s Sydney Cup (Gr 1, 3200m).

Accidental Bid’s 18-year-old dam Comnena (Tiger Hill) has had six runners for six winners, with two scoring over 3300 metres, one of them over jumps.

The pedigree also has a dash of attractive inbreeding in the repetition in powerful places of a most useful broodmare in Helen Street (Troy) - dam of the outstanding racehorse and highly influential sire and broodmare sire Street Cry (Machiavellian).

Helen Street sits at 5f x 3f. Her daughter Helsinki (Machiavellian) - Street Cry’s full-sister - is the dam of Shamardal (Giant’s Causeway), Phoenix Of Spain’s grandsire. And down below, Helen Street is Accidental Bid’s third dam.

“We bought Accidental Bid for a bit of both his pedigree and what he’d shown on the track,” Lovett said. “The pedigree’s not relevant if they’re slow, although we did buy him off one run, so it was a bit of a throw at the stumps.

And if you can buy a northern hemisphere horse, regardless of their age, if they can stay, they’re just better than our stayers, and that’s been proven time and time again

Jamie Lovett

“We actually bought him with a view to leaving him in Britain, trying to make him look good and trading him. But it turned out he wasn’t the right one for that job.

“The more we looked into his pedigree, the more we could make a case that he might stay.

“And if you can buy a northern hemisphere horse, regardless of their age, if they can stay, they’re just better than our stayers, and that’s been proven time and time again.

“We’ve always thought it’s worth having a try, if you can get the right one. They can go through their grades early and then you can throw them in at the deep end.

“And Accidental Bid was a relatively inexpensive horse, as he should’ve been. It’s a commercially viable way to have a throw at the stumps, as opposed to trying to breed a stayer.”

Accidental Bid had one start in Britain for Australian Bloodstock, running 14th of 26 in a rich Newmarket two-year-old event over 1408 metres, which now seems unsuitably short.

“That was an ok run. The jockey sat up on him once he wasn’t going to run a place, as they do over there, plus his old connections told us he was still probably very immature,” Lovett said.

“Then in Australia, we watched his first start with our eyes shut because he hadn’t shown a lot in his jump-outs, but he’d come into his own in his work and he won well. He certainly bounced off that well into his second run.”

Two weeks later, Lovett and Accidental Bid’s owners will be keenly hitting their “refresh” buttons between now and Saturday morning.

“I’d love to get him into the Derby, just to see where he fits in,” Lovett said.

“But equally, with that big, deep, staying pedigree of his, regardless of what he does now, he might be a staying horse of the future.”

Novara Park announce well-bred Group 2 winner The Foxes for 2026

The Foxes (Credit: HKJC)

Novara Park Stud has announced that Group 2 scorer The Foxes (Churchill) will join their stallion roster this season at an opening fee of NZ$10,000 (plus GST).

Sired by dual 2,000 Guineas winner Churchill (Galileo), The Foxes displayed precocity as a two-year-old, winning twice over 1400 metres and 1600 metres, including a dominant success in the Royal Lodge Stakes (Gr 2, 7f), where he defeated subsequent Group 1 winner Dubai Mile (Roaring Lion).

He has since forged a career as a multiple Group 2 winner, landing the time-honoured Dante Stakes (Gr 2, 1m 2.5f), the Huxley Stakes (Gr 2, 1m 2.5f), and a commanding victory in the Churchill Stakes (Listed, 1m 2f), where he defeated Dubai Honour (Pride Of Dubai), a multiple Group 1 winner in Australia, by an impressive three lengths.

The Foxes produced a superb effort on his second-to-last start when finishing a close second to the nine-time Group 1 winner Rebel’s Romance (Dubawi) in the HH The Amir Trophy (Gr 3, 2300m) in Qatar, before signing off in style by winning the Huxley Stakes.

He also produced elite Group 1 performances, finishing second in the Belmont Derby (Gr 1, 10f) and fifth in the Epsom Derby (Gr 1, 1m 4f).

With total earnings exceeding £1.2 million (approx. AU$2.25 million), The Foxes combined blistering speed, tenacity, and genuine Classic stamina throughout his distinguished international campaign.

“The Foxes is living proof that legendary blood still breeds true at the very highest level,” Muollo said.

“He retires to stud with an outstanding race record that marks him as one of the most consistent and high-class middle-distance performers of his generation, having competed successfully in England, Ireland, North America, Hong Kong, Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

“The Foxes was exceptionally consistent and won at Group or stakes level in every year of his racing career — delivering black-type success as a two-year-old, three-year-old, four-year-old, and five-year-old. If you can breed horses that can race over multiple seasons, that’s really going to keep the breeders interested as well as the buyers.”

The Foxes is out of Tanaghum (Darshaan), a Listed-placed winner that has produced 12 winners from 13 runners to date, including six Group/Graded stakes winners, headed by Matterhorn (Raven’s Pass).

True to her genetic dominance, she has also produced the stakes-performed Zahoo (Nayef), who is the dam of multiple Group winners Marbaan (Oasis Dream) and Convergence (Cape Cross), while another daughter is the dam of six-time Group 1 winner Ribchester (Iffraaj).

His second dam is Mehthaaf (Nureyev), a Champion 3YO Filly and Irish 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) winner, who is in turn the dam of Champion 3YO Najah (Nashwan) while his third dam Elle Seule (Exclusive Native) is a Group 2 winner and dam of July Cup (Gr 1, 6f) hero Elnadim (Danzig).

“The Foxes is bred on the exact same Sadler’s Wells sire line over a Darshaan mare that produced the outstanding sire and sire-of-sires High Chaparral,” Muollo said.

“Breeders will also love the depth of this pedigree — he carries a second dam by the legendary Nureyev, the same influential broodmare sire that powered Zabeel to greatness.”

“This exceptional depth of black-type quality from one of the most productive and influential families in breeding dramatically strengthens The Foxes’ credentials as a stallion prospect,” added Muollo.

“He brings not only his own proven Group race ability and international class, but also the proven sire family running through a remarkable broodmare line whose progeny continue to deliver elite performers across multiple generations.

“Breeders will particularly respect that The Foxes has only one dam on his packed pedigree page — a testament to the extraordinary consistency and success of this family at the highest level. The Foxes confirms that exceptional bloodlines still breed true at the absolute elite level.”

Supplementaries finalised for Chairman's Sale

Chayan (Credit: Inglis)

A total of 11 supplementary entries have been confirmed for next week’s Inglis Chairman’s Sale, taking the final catalogue to 115 lots.

The supplementaries are headed by this season’s Reisling Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) winner Chayan (I Am Invincible), the dual Group-placed mare Vestas (Toronado) and two mares (Hazlebrook and Sizzlefly) in foal to Newgate's Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt).

Other supplementaries include mares in foal to I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit), Harry Angel (Dark Angel) and Stay Inside (Extreme Choice), the Group-performed mare Brigidine Gal (Al Maher) and the three-year-old Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) filly Southern Heiress.

They join what is a strong Chairman’s catalogue that also features The Goodwood (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Benedetta (Hellbent), triple Group 1 winner Provence (Savabeel), and millionaire mare Arabian Summer (Too Darn Hot) to name a few.

Inglis Bloodstock sales manager Harry Bailey was excited about offering such an elite group of race fillies and mares to buyers.

“Chairman’s has a higher percentage of the commercially appealing mares that will go to market in 2026 than ever before,’’ Bailey said.

“The addition of Chayan to the catalogue is particularly significant because you just never see the best two-year-olds being sold at this stage of their career, and having two more mares in foal to Extreme Choice is also a huge opportunity for buyers to be able to access a stallion such as him.

“Next Thursday night is going to be a lot of fun, there will be plenty of action both in and out of the sales ring and we can’t wait for what is hands down the most enjoyable sale anywhere in the world.’’

The Chairman’s Sale will be held at Riverside Stables next Thursday evening, May 7, from 4pm. To view the Chairman’s Sale catalogue click here.

Hoskin on thrilling Derby adventure with Kiwi Geneva

Last-start Group 3 winner Geneva (Time Test) has earned his place in Saturday’s South Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2500m), marking trainer Kylie Hoskin’s first trans-Tasman campaign. Winner of the Manawatu Classic (Gr 3, 2100m) following a third-placing in the New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m), Geneva’s preparation on the track has been smooth sailing, but his journey across the Tasman has been anything but. Despite some travel hiccups, there is no dampening Hoskin’s enthusiasm for the challenge. “It's really exciting to be contesting a Group One in Australia,” Hoskin said. “You always hope you're going to have one good enough to get over here, so it's very exciting. The travel has been a bit of a nightmare as the plane we were originally scheduled to fly to Melbourne on had an engine issue and was delayed. The plan was to fly over here and then head up to Aaron Bain’s at the old Lindsay Park at Angaston. He was going to have us for the week, but we missed our interstate truck. So we're currently at Ballarat at Henry Dwyer's and everyone's been super helpful. He is heading to Adelaide on Thursday night because that is the last interstate truck, so we've had to pivot a bit.” The winner of three of his 12 starts, Geneva has raced every month between August and March and enters Saturday’s contest with five weeks between runs. “We've spaced a lot of his races, so he's often had a month in between runs,” Hoskin said. “He's a naturally fit horse. I don't have to pile a heap of work into him. He eats well, and he's a pretty calm and cool character. I'm not worried about the fact he's been up a while.”

Royal Ascot question to be answered for Lady Of Camelot

Lady Of Camelot (Credit: Sportpix)

The run of Lady Of Camelot (Written Tycoon) in Saturday's Victory Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Eagle Farm will go a long way to deciding whether the Group 1-winning mare travels over to the UK for June's Royal Ascot meeting or not. The four-year-old daughter of Written Tycoon (Iglesia), who won the Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) back in 2024, has not raced since March, 2025 where she was third in the Coolmore Classic (Gr 1, 1500m), and co-trainer Adrian Bott feels this weekend's Group 2 will provide a lot of clues. “I think we’ll get a very good gauge on Saturday,” Bott, who trains in partnership with Gai Waterhouse, told Racing.com. “She’ll answer a lot of questions for us. It will be really interesting to see what sort of benefit that long spell will give her. We know she’ll improve off the run, but she needs to show us she’s up and ready. We don’t want to go over half-hearted. We want to see her at her very best and even, to an extent, somewhat improved from what we’ve seen from her. If that is the case, we’ve got the right timing, we’ve got the right races and the right horse. She hasn’t won since the Slipper, I don’t think, but she’s run some incredible races around the right horses in the biggest events since then - against her own age and at weight-for-age, over trips from 1100m to 1500m - so she’s very versatile. She travelled up there [Brisbane] the other day and arrived in really good order. She’s done all her main work here [Sydney]. She’s had a couple of trials and an exhibition gallop at the races on Saturday to top her off nicely. If she doesn’t end up going over there [Royal Ascot], Queensland has some lovely races that will suit her and then that will allow her to bounce straight into the spring.”

Tenenbaum set to headline Widdup’s Hawkesbury hopes

Brad Widdup will look to promising colt Tenenbaum (Snitzel) to lift stable morale when he lines up in the Clarendon Stakes (1400m) at Hawkesbury on Saturday. The Hawkesbury trainer has endured a setback with stable star Jedibeel (Savabeel) sidelined following his Perth trip, but Tenenbaum has emerged as a leading contender to press claims for a Queensland winter campaign. A $750,000 Inglis Easter purchase, the son of Snitzel has raced twice, resuming with an impressive maiden win at Wyong before backing up with a dominant trial performance at Hawkesbury. “He won well the other day at Wyong,” Widdup told Racing NSW. “I didn’t want to chase the big races after a setback, so this has always been the race to have a crack at.” The Clarendon Stakes has produced high-class performers including Zoustar (Northern Meteor), and Widdup is hopeful Tenenbaum can add his name to that list. “Brisbane is definitely on the radar, but let’s get through Saturday first,” he said. A strong performance could see the colt progress towards the J J Atkins (Gr 1, 1600m) at Eagle Farm. Widdup also has runners engaged across the card, including Hyperbolic (Proisir) in the Hawkesbury Gold Cup (Gr 3, 1600m) and Audrey’s Lane (Pierro), who is likely to contest a Midway Handicap (1500m). Meanwhile, Jedibeel is expected to undergo throat surgery after his disappointing run in The Quokka (1200m), with Widdup hopeful the gelding can return following a spell.

Jigsaw sent for spell after seven-win streak

Jigsaw (Manhattan Rain) will not extend his winning sequence this season, with trainer Cindy Alderson electing to send the sprinter for a winter spell. The rising eight-year-old has won seven races in succession, including tThe Quokka (1200m) and the William Reid Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m), but will now be given time to freshen up ahead of a spring return. “I took him to the farm this morning and he’s gone out for a holiday,’’ Alderson told Racing.com. “He was looking so fine, so resplendent as he was cantering around this morning, but I just thought ‘he’s done his job’ and really, he’s more than done his job. He’s just been awesome. There’s only really Queensland, which is another trip after being to New Zealand and then to Perth and I just thought his last run [win in the Quokka], I know there were reasons for it, but I just thought he was a little bit below what he had been as he was out on his feet on the line. I would say he would be out for May and June and he’ll come back August/September and we’ll be looking for a run sometime in October.” Jigsaw’s winning run began in the Apache Cat Classic (1200m) at Cranbourne last October and also included a victory in the Railway Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m). “I am absolutely thrilled beyond words with the preparation he’s had and the journey that we’ve been on and the fun that he’s given us all and the satisfaction and all those things,’’ Alderson said. “But I am probably under no illusion. He’s a damn good horse, but I don’t know if he’s top, top draw.” A return for the spring could bring races such as The Everest (Gr 1, 1200m) into consideration.

Wide draw puts Smart As Smart start in doubt

Smart As Smart (Smart Missile) faces an uncertain start in the Voodoo Ranger Handicap (1710m) at Ipswich on Wednesday after drawing the outside barrier. Trainer Renita Beaton said the race shapes as an ideal third-up option for the son of Smart Missile (Fastnet Rock), but the wide gate has left connections weighing up whether to run. "We've had to run him from terrible draws in the past and he's just been one of the most unlucky horses and I just don't want to do that to his owners again," Beaton said. "Look, we might draw bad again next time and you have to go around, but if I can protect him for one more run I will. We'll wait until tomorrow [Wednesday] to see if there are any scratchings and if there is, we may run him." A decision will depend on possible scratchings, with Jace McMurray booked to ride and reduce the gelding’s impost to 59 kilograms. Smart As Smart has been in consistent form this preparation, winning first-up at Doomben over 1350 metres before finishing a narrow second over 1640 metres at his latest outing. "He's in really good order, he's always been such a consistent horse for me," Beaton said. "Every time I take him to the races he seems to show up and he's very honest. "He's in very good order, he's racing very well and consistently and there's no reason why he won't go and do that again."

Lloyd swaps saddle for pre-training

Madison Lloyd (Credit: Sportpix)

Listed-winning jockey Madison Lloyd has all but called time on her riding career, having not ridden since May last year as she focuses on her growing pre-training operation. The 25-year-old, who partnered 213 winners in six years in the saddle, opened Madison J Lloyd Pre-Training at Michelle Payne’s former Miners Rest property last August and says she is thriving in her new role. “I have no regrets,” Lloyd told Racing.com. “I kept my jockey licence just in case it didn’t work out, but I’d be surprised if I did come back. At this stage, I’m loving this too much.” Lloyd said the shift has delivered a better quality of life after the mental toll of race riding, which included early mornings, strict weight management and long hours travelling to meetings. “I find this job a lot easier, mentally, than riding trackwork and driving to the races every day,” she said. Her business typically has around 12 horses in work, with Lloyd particularly enjoying the challenge of educating young horses and working through issues with problem gallopers. Her career highlight came aboard Frankie Pinot (Your Song) in the Wangoom Handicap (Listed, 1200m) in 2022. Now retired, the gelding resides at Lloyd’s property. “He’s here with me in my paddock,” she said. “He’s happy and fat.”

Dance parts with Australian Thoroughbred Bloodstock

Australian Thoroughbred Bloodstock (ATB) has been sold, with Stephen Everett and Tash Blakley’s SCT Syndications taking ownership of the long-established operation. Co-founder Darren Dance said the decision to sell, alongside wife Liz, was made with a focus on ensuring continuity for clients and the future success of the business. “It came out of the blue, to be honest,” Dance told Racing.com. “We had a few approaches, but this one happened quickly and felt like the right fit. You want the business to carry on with people who share the same values, and Stephen and Tash will do a good job.” The Dances, who established ATB in 1997, have gradually stepped back from operations following the sale of their breeding farms, with plans to travel influencing the timing of the decision. “Given we want to spend the next couple of years travelling, it didn’t seem fair to owners and trainers to keep operating while absent,” Dance said. Horses purchased by ATB will continue to race under existing ownership structures and retain the familiar stable colours. ATB has enjoyed sustained success over nearly three decades, highlighted by dual Group 1 winner Platelet (Strategic), international performer Dandino (Dansili), and globetrotter Jakkalberry (Storming Home), as well as Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) placegetter Heartbreak City (Lando). “There’s a lot of great memories,” Dance said. “From buying Platelet out of a paddock to competing internationally, it’s been an incredible journey.”

Stewards charge Vincent Hall over prohibited substance

Racing Victoria (RV) stewards have issued a charge against trainer Vincent Hall following an investigation into a post-race sample taken from his runner Harmonett (Epaulette). The charge has been laid under Australian Rule of Racing AR 240(2), relating to the presence of a prohibited substance in a sample taken from a horse at a race meeting. Harmonett was brought to Sandown-Hillside on January 21, 2026 to contest the Brad Masters Plumbing Handicap (1000m), winning the race. A post-race urine sample was subsequently taken and later analysis detected the presence of Fexofenadine. Fexofenadine is classified as a prohibited substance under Prohibited List B of the Australian Rules of Racing. The substance was identified by both Racing Analytical Services Limited and the Australian Racing Forensics Laboratory. Fexofenadine is an antihistamine commonly used in humans to treat allergic conditions such as hay fever and hives, and is not registered for use in horses. Under AR 240(2), a trainer and any person in charge of a horse at the relevant time are deemed to have breached the rules if a prohibited substance is detected in a sample taken before or after a race. The matter has been referred to a stewards’ panel, with a hearing date yet to be set.

National Thoroughbred Week expands to ten-day program in 2026

National Thoroughbred Week will return in 2026 with an expanded ten-day program across Australia and New Zealand, running from November 20 to November 30. Following a successful inaugural edition, the event has been extended from five days to provide greater flexibility for hosts and allow the public to attend across two full weekends. The initiative offers behind-the-scenes access to the thoroughbred industry, with training stables, breeding farms, retrainers, race clubs, veterinary hospitals and equine organisations opening their doors. The 2025 pilot attracted more than 5,000 attendees across 84 events delivered by over 100 hosts and partners. “2025 proved there is a real appetite for this kind of transparent industry access that shows the magic happening behind the scenes,” said National Thoroughbred Week project manager, Tai Ryan. “We had families, students, racing fans and people completely new to the industry walking through farms, stables and equine facilities, meeting the horses and seeing their level of care. The next step is to build on that momentum and create a structure that allows National Thoroughbred Week to grow in a sustainable way, while keeping the same grassroots spirit that made the pilot so special.” A national committee and local hub structure will be introduced in 2026 to support growth, alongside calls for volunteers across key areas including education, media, sponsorship and grants, with further information here.

JPN: Forever Young given Prince of Wales’s Stakes entry

Forever Young (Credit: Jockey Club of Saudi Arabia)

Japanese dirt star Forever Young (Real Steel) was a surprise entry for the Prince of Wales's Stakes (Gr 1, 1m 2f) when entries came out on Tuesday. The five-year-old is a four-time winner at the elite level however all four of those, and indeed all of his starts to date, have come on dirt tracks, with the Prince of Wales's taking place during Royal Ascot on the turf. Trainer Yoshito Yahagi told the Racing Post: “I've been thinking – and saying in public – that I should send Forever Young to a turf race in the future. His owner Susumu Fujita shares this feeling and the Prince of Wales’s Stakes is one of the turf-race options I should consider. It's very prestigious for a trainer to have a runner at Royal Ascot, while I think it's a very attractive idea to send Forever Young for the Prince of Wales’s Stakes, although he has had an easy time since he returned from the Middle East."

20 for Saxon Warrior

Coolmore’s former shuttler Saxon Warrior (Deep Impact) chalked up his 20th individual stakes winner won Tuesday when the John and Thady Gosden-trained Saxon Street (3 c ex Sea Is Gold by Sea The Stars) scored in the Blue Riband Trial Stakes (Listed, 1m 2f) at Epsom. Ridden by William Buick, the three-year-old colt hit the front with over a furlong left to race and stayed on well to beat Rebel Rocker (Cityscape) by two and a half lengths. There was a further length and a quarter back to Balzac (Japan) in third place. Bred by Sunderland Holdings Inc, Saxon Street was purchased by Jamie McCalmont for €170,000 at Book 1 of the Goffs Orby Yearling Sale in 2024 and races in the colours of Marc Chan's Marcstown Ltd. He is the first foal out of the Sea The Stars (Cape Cross) mare Sea Is Gold, herself an unraced sister to Australian Bloodstock's 2019 Sydney Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winner Shraaoh and 2020 Chairman's Quality (Gr 2, 2600m) winner and Sydney Cup placegetter Raheen House - who also raced for Australian Bloodstock. Saxon Warrior, who shuttled to Coolmore Australia between 2019-2022, is standing at Coolmoore Stud for a fee of €10,000 (approx. AU$16,310).

36 for Zarak

Dolmalan (3 c ex Dolianova by Rock Of Gibraltar) became the 36th individual stakes winner for Haras de Bonneval stallion Zarak (Dubawi) when landing Tuesday’s Prix de Suresnes (Listed, 2000m) at Chantilly. Ridden by Mickael Barzalona for trainer Mikel Delzangles, the colt came from last in the five-runner field to collar the Aidan O’Brien-trained Montreal (Sea The Stars), who had made all of the running to that point, by a head at the line. There was a further two and a half lengths back to Wiki (Make Believe) in third place. Bred and raced by Aga Khan Studs, Dolmalan is out of the Listed-winning Rock Of Gibraltar (Danehill) mare Dolianova, herself a half-sister to Group 1 scorer Dolniya (Azamour). Zarak is standing at a fee of €80,000 (approx. AU$130,470).

UK: Asfoora set to improve off Newmarket return

Last year’s Royal Ascot winner Asfoora (Flying Artie) is expected to improve on whatever she produces when she resumes in the Palace House Stakes (Gr 3, 5f) at Newmarket on Saturday, with both trainer Henry Dwyer and jockey Oisin Murphy tempering expectations first-up. Murphy, who has partnered the mare in her northern hemisphere Group 1 successes, rode her in a recent piece of work and said she had returned in good order, but would benefit from the outing. “She’s moving great and it’s wonderful that she’s back,” he told Racing.com. “She’s going to need her first start this year. I think Henry is targeting the King Charles III Stakes at Royal Ascot that she won in 2024, and she’ll have a couple of runs into that. I’d be really surprised if she won on her first start this time around, but I hope she’ll be more than good enough through the season.” Dwyer echoed that sentiment, noting the demanding nature of Newmarket’s straight five furlongs could test her fitness. “That last furlong on the Rowley Mile is very steep, probably more like a six-furlong race,” he said. “She’s never really coped with that at the best of times.” Asfoora will press on to the Temple Stakes (Gr 2, 5f) at Haydock on May 23 before a return to Royal Ascot in June.
